Rolex’s Most Important Release of 2023 Was a Long Time Coming

The use of titanium makes the Yacht-Master 42 feel sportier than ever.

rolex yacht master titanium 42

By Zen Love

Rolex finally did it: it made a full-titanium watch that’s actually practical for everyday wear. Meet the all-new Yacht-Master 42, a de facto successor to the titanium Deepsea Challenge announced last year, albeit slightly less gargantuan. Here are the most important takeaways.

Titanium Matters. Here’s Why

A titanium Yacht-Master has been rumored since Olympic sailing champion Ben Ainslie was spotted wearing a prototype in 2021 . That watch was on a strap but the new Yacht-Master comes on a full titanium bracelet. Like with its other metals, such as Oystersteel, Rolex gives its titanium a special name, RLX titanium, which it describes as a “grade 5 titanium alloy specially selected by Rolex.”

Titanium is currently a hot material in watchmaking and loved by watch fans for myriad desirable qualities. Being lightweight makes titanium watches highly comfortable to wear, but being harder than steel had long made it a difficult material to work with. As production methods have improved it’s become more common and popular, but the stamp of approval from Rolex will give titanium another level of legitimacy, hype and weight (so to speak) among watchmakers and collectors — it might also (eventually) signal more titanium watches from the brand in the future.

From Prestige to Purpose

The new watch also seems to take the Yacht-Master collection in a new direction. The sailing-oriented watch was long something like a fancy, more lifestyle-focused version of the relatively sporty and serious tool-watch vibes of the Submariner. It was only available in precious metals.

With a titanium case and bracelet paired to a monochromatic black dial and bezel, however, the Yacht-Master is a lot more like a genuine tool watch — which feels a bit like the brand returning to its roots. The way it tested the watch on an Olympic athlete also feels like the old-school Rolex many of its ardent fans admire most. It’s always felt a lot like a Submariner, but producing it in a special metal (as well as its bezel’s relief markers) helps differentiate it.

It Won’t Be Cheap or Easy to Get

Titanium might not be a precious metal but it’s certainly a premium material, meaning it easily fits in with the Yacht-Master’s higher price tier. Like other Rolex sport watches, you might not be able to walk into a boutique and buy one right away (though this is hopefully changing soon ). Its nominal retail price is 13,400 Swiss francs or about $14,600.

Ryan Hadley -- a tattoo artist who appeared on season 6 of the hit competition show "Ink Master" -- has died after a battle with cancer ... this according to his own social pages.

Hadley's Instagram account shared the sad news Friday -- saying he'd passed away the night prior while surrounded by loved ones. The caption continued, "While his life was cut short, in that time he left a legacy behind in both the art and tattoo world."

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

It went on ... "He loved his many fans, his friends and clients, and most of all his children. He’ll be missed and always remembered. A legend forever." A photo of Ryan doing some tattoo work was added to the post, and it showed him beaming.

Hadley rose to fame on the sixth season of "Ink Master" ... though he was eliminated pretty early on in just the second week of the competition. Still, he left an impression with fans.

Hadley continued to tattoo over the next decade, right up until his death it seems ... which his family saw coming -- asking for end-of-life donations just a few days ago.

He first posted about his diagnosis in December of last year ... letting folks know he'd been diagnosed with seminoma -- a germ cell tumor. Ryan wrote he hated asking for donations at the time, but admitted he needed a helping hand.

He was only 46.

New York Federal Court Disqualifies Lawyer John Moscow and BakerHostetler in Magnitsky Money Laundering Case

December 21, 2015

21 December 2015 – The federal court in New York has disqualified lawyer John Moscow and his firm, BakerHostetler, who represented the alleged Russian recipients of money laundering proceeds from the US$230 million Russian fraud that Sergei Magnitsky uncovered, in a civil forfeiture case brought by the US Department of Justice. The case alleges money laundering of proceeds of Russian fraud into multi-million dollar Manhattan real estate by Prevezon, a company owned by a son of former Vice-premier of the Moscow Region and the current Vice-president of Russian Railways Pyotr Katsyv.

John Moscow and BakerHostetler had originally worked for Hermitage in 2008 to defend Hermitage against unfounded accusations relating to the fraud, including (among other projects) by tracking the stolen US$230 million and its recipients, and bringing the evidence of this complex Russian fraud which victimised Hermitage, to the US Department of Justice. On Hermitage’s behalf, John Moscow personally presented the findings from the Hermitage’s and Sergei Magnitsky’s investigations of the $230 million fraud to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

On 25 November 2008, one day after Sergei Magnitsky’s arrest by corrupt Russian officials on false charges, John Moscow also became involved in Hermitage’s legal actions to free Sergei Magnitsky from Russian detention. Prior to his arrest, Sergei Magnitsky gave testimony to Russian authorities implicating Russian officials in the theft of Hermitage’s Russian companies and of US$230 million the Hermitage’s companies had paid to the Russian government.

One year later, on 16 November 2009, Sergei Magnitsky was killed in Russian police custody before he could testify in an open trial.

In 2013, John Moscow and BakerHostetler switched sides, and went from representing Hermitage to representing Russian-owned Prevezon, an alleged beneficiary of the US$230 million fraud, that Sergei Magnitsky’s investigation had led to after his death. The US Department of Justice has traced to Prevezon nearly US$2 million of the US$230 million fraud proceeds and more funds in false and questionable transactions.  The US court has frozen about US$14 million in Prevezon’s assets, including bank accounts and several Manhattan properties.

In November 2015, John Moscow and BakerHostetler made filings on Prevezon’s behalf in which they explicitly accused Hermitage of committing the US$230 million fraud that they originally have been hired to defend against.

On 15 December 2015, Hermitage filed a motion to disqualify BakerHostetler and John Moscow.

In Judge Griesa’s opinion, issued on 18 December 2015, the U.S. Court for Southern District of New York ordered:

“The court is now convinced that it would be improper for BakerHostetler and Moscow to continue as counsel to defendants. …Hermitage’s motion to disqualify BakerHostetler and Moscow as counsel to defendants is granted.”

Hermitage Capital’s representative said of the disqualification of John Moscow and BakerHostetler :

“This disqualification is a stark reminder that lawyers can’t switch sides just because there is money being offered to them.”

Under Rule 1.9 of the New York Rule of Professional Conduct, lawyers are not allowed to betray their former clients. In particular, the rule says:

“A lawyer who has formerly represented a client in a matter shall not thereafter represent another person in the same or a substantially related matter in which that person’s interests are materially adverse to the interests of the former client unless the former client gives informed consent, confirmed in writing.”

Hermitage became the victim of the US$230 million fraud in 2007 when a Russian criminal organisation, comprising FSB, Interior Ministry and tax officials and headed by a convicted fraudster Dmitry Klyuev, raided offices of Hermitage and its law firm in Moscow, unlawfully seized statutory and financial documents for its corporate Russian subsidiaries. Using those documents, the Russian crime group forged contracts and powers of attorney, fraudulently re-registered the stolen Hermitage companies to felons previously convicted for violent crimes, and through sham court proceedings obtained about US$1 billion judgments against the stolen Hermitage companies, in order to claim US$230 million in purportedly “overpaid” taxes.

The fraudulent US$230 million tax refund was granted by Russian tax officials, who were members of the crime group, in one day, and paid out two days later to two small Russian banks, where fraudsters had opened bank accounts, and then laundered through Russian banks and around the world.

Through efforts of Hermitage and law enforcement authorities around the world, about US$40 million connected to the US$230 million fraud uncovered by Sergei Magnitsky have been identified and frozen.

BakerHostetler is an “Am Law 100 law firm” with more than 900 attorneys and 14 offices. John Moscow is a former New York prosecutor and a partner at Baker Hostetler.

Introducing Two New Wild Rolex Yacht-Master 42mm Models – One In Yellow Gold And Another With A Falcon's Eye Dial

Rolex is really flexing with these two oysterflex-equipped models..

yachtmaster new

Rolex is having a big day, with a lot of green. We've already seen the new Air-King and a left-handed GMT-Master II – both featuring green accents. But enough of the green already. We now have two new 42mm Yacht-Masters. One is white gold with a killer Falcon's Eye dial. And the other is a Rolex Yacht-Master 42 in yellow gold, baby!

Much like the existing white gold, these new variation takes things into new territory in terms of case and dial material. They keep things simple and straightforward with completely white text on the dial (The Everose Yacht-Master 40 displays the word Yacht-Master in red).

yachtmaster new

Fans will be pleased to see there are now options within the 42mm Yacht-Master range. Previously, this size was only available in white gold with a standard black dial. Both variations utilize the same Rolex in-house caliber 3235 released in 2015, and fitted inside the 42 yacht-leisure watch since 2019.

yachtmaster new

Of course, the Crown didn't stop there. In addition to this new 42mm model, Rolex has also unveiled a new Yachtmaster 40 in white gold (a first for that collection) and a rotatable – yes you read that right – multi-colored sapphire bezel and iced-out lugs. It's certainly a watch that deserves a certain level of yacht.

If any material is tailor-made for leisurely drinks on the fantail in Capri, it's yellow gold. Of course, that wouldn't be the case for true sport yachting, but let's be real – the target audience for the Yacht-Master doesn't really get down with that kind of boating. So what does that make the Falcon's Eye dial? It's something you want just because you want it. And that's okay.

The Yacht-Master line is something of an oddball in the Rolex lineup. It looks similar to a Submariner, but has certain differences like the use of a matte ceramic bezel as opposed to polished. Of course, the biggest difference between a Yacht-Master and other Rolex sports watches is that has come exclusively in precious metals. And that trend continues today with the introduction of yellow gold.

Yacht-Master

I'm sure many fans are disappointed to learn that Rolex did not release a titanium Yacht-Master – which was made as a prototype for British sailor Ben Ainslie. Oh well. The new one keeps consistency within the range. It was gold, and remains gold.

I'm torn between which variation I like more. On one hand, I love the yellow gold model because – well – I love yellow gold. It looks like a watch that has existed, or at least should always existed and that's a good thing. On the other hand, just look at the Falcon's Eye dial! It is undeniably cool, and one of those things that makes you look closer and closer. Did Rolex need to create a dial like this? Of course not, but it's Rolex we're talking about.

Yacht-Master

Both watches come fitted to the Rolex Oysterflex bracelet which gives these precious models a certain sportiness that belies the price of gold. Yachting season is nearly upon us (I think). And these arrived just in time.

Outrage As Bali’s Canggu Listed As ‘New Moscow’ On GoogleMaps

Bali lovers have had mixed responses to a new listing on Google Maps.

The booming tourism resort of Canggu has been given a new listing as “New Moscow” on the app, sparking outrage from locals and tourists alike.

Google Maps Hand Phone.jpg

Although the new listing is unofficial and has not replaced or removed any of the official listings or area demarkations on the app, the listing of ‘New Moscow’ or in Russia’s Cyrillic alphabet ‘New Mokba’ has got the internet in a fluster with netizens citing colonialism and insensitive jokes as the reasons for their outrage.

The response from the online community has been so intense that top officials have issued statements on the matter.

The Head of Public Relations of the Bali Police, Commissioner Pol Jansen Avitus Panjaitan, has come out to say that the police are going to investigate whether there are any legal ramifications for the listing.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Canggu Bali News (CBN) (@canggubalinews)

Commissioner Pol Panjaitan told reporters,  “There has been no change in what applies in Indonesia. The map is still called Canggu.” He confirmed that police are approaching the situation as an ill-judged prank. He said, “We don’t know yet [why this happened]. We will coordinate; who did it, or was it just for fun.”

Speaking separately, the head of the Bali Provincial Tourism Office, Tjok Bagus Pemayun, said that he was not concerned about the change on GoogleMaps. He compared the tag to place names like ‘Chinatown’, ‘Little India,’ and ‘Paris Van Java.’

@giorga.com The best hotspot in Canggu, Bali 🌴 #bali #balitravel #balitips #backpacking #indonesia #canggu #hotspotscanggu #tipscanggu #hotspots #tips #beachclubs #restaurant #breakfastspots #lunchspotsbali #balitips #balihotspots ♬ Love You So – The King Khan & BBQ Show

Pemayun told reporters, “If in Bali there is New Moscow [used] as a term, it doesn’t matter as long as the residents in that place still obey all the rules and regulations that apply in Indonesia, and don’t cause problems with the local communities around them.”

However innocuous it may first seem for Canggu to have a new GoogleMaps listing as “New Moscow,” the reason for outrage by local communities is rooted in genuine concerns.

Since the start of the Russian-Ukraine war, the number of Russian citizens visiting and staying long-term in Bali, specifically in the Canggu area, has risen dramatically.

The number of Russian-backed property development projects in Canggu and across the province has skyrocketed, too.

With more and more community and agricultural land being sold off to Russian investors (and plenty of other investors, too), more tensions between locals and foreigners in Canggu have arisen over the last year or so.

Many local people feel that a new wave of colonization has hit Bali with Russian investment leading the way, since the pandemic.

Many feel that the New Moscow listing is a representation of a much larger issue at play which is seeing the needs and wants of Russian (and other foreign) investment put before the needs and wants of local people, local communities and Bali’s cultural heritage.

Ariel View Of Canggu Bali

It is unlikely that the police will find any legal violations with the new listing, despite Indonesia’s strict online censorship rules.

Despite much animosity towards Russian and Ukrainian visitors and investors in Bali, it remains the case that the most frequent international arrivals to the island hail from Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, and China.

Birdseye-View-Of-Canggu-Area-in-Bali

That said, most Russian visitors to Bali are residing on the island on long-stay socio-cultural visas or pre-investment visas.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economies Sandiaga Uno recently confirmed that before the war broke out, most Russian and Ukrainian citizens were staying on the island for just 1-2 weeks; since January 2023, data shows that stays are now over 90 days.

Berawa-Beach-in-Bali-Canggu

Last year with incidences of badly behaved tourists and foreigners on the island rising Bali created the Tourism Task Force who were given the mission to crack down on foreigners breaking the conditions of their visas by working, conducting business activities or even engaging in illegal activities such as drug use.

Regardless of the feelings toward Russians and Ukrainians, the Indonesian government and local authorities allowed these things to happen. Corruption is the name of the game. Money is more powerful than laws.

Lighten up, it's someone having a bit of fun. A bit like calling the Kuta/Legian area Ozbalia or Sanur Snore.

Monday 20th of May 2024

Expat you miss the point. 'Snore' was and still is for some people the nickname for Sanur. I just used it (and Ozbalia) as a joke and tongue in cheek comment to show how easy it is to amend Google maps. It had nothing to do with reality.

I considered adding graphics, but decided not to, just like the Moscow map. A pissed Australian on deck chair with a smoke and a can of beer for Kuta, and an arial shot with zzzzz as a caption for Sanur.

@Shorty, Sanur is "Snore"? Not really.

Gullible tourists believe they choose Sanur because it is "family friendly" while areas of Sanur is actually a filthy hotbed of x-rated business including likely human trafficking. Some of this business is well integrated into the tourist zone.

Only a few months ago it was in the news about a raid in one area detaining 30+ of these "workers" resulting in violence and attack on the civil police station.

The local leaders of course blame all this x-rated business on tourists while actually these hot spots are frequented by the locals!

Had some more fun...Sanur has been pinned Snore

Your edit has been accepted Your edit to Ozbali has been accepted. Note that some changes might take up to 24 hours before appearing on Google.

It doesn't take any particular skill. Just follow the Maps prompts. Subject to Google approval, I've just pinned Ozbalia on Kuta Beach.

Andrew Higgins Named Moscow Bureau Chief

Andrew Higgins will succeed Neil MacFarquhar, to become the latest in a storied succession of leaders. Read more in this note from Michael Slackman and Jim Yardley.

Our Moscow bureau is legendary.

Just consider some of the correspondents who have plied their trade there: Bill Keller, Serge Schmemann, Hedrick Smith, Cliff Levy, Ellen Barry, Chris Chivers. And consider the Pulitzer Prizes: 1989 , 2011, 2017.

So with Neil MacFarquhar (a recipient of that 2017 Pulitzer) heading on to a new assignment at the end of the summer, we needed someone who could assume a place in that intimidating pantheon of bureau chiefs with grace and ease.

We didn’t have to look very far: Andrew Higgins will be our next Moscow bureau chief.

For those of you who don’t know Andy, he is among the most accomplished correspondents of our time. Fluent in Russian, Mandarin and French, he was part of the team that won the Pulitzer in international reporting for coverage of Vladimir Putin’s covert efforts to spread Russian influence. That was his second Pulitzer for Russia coverage. In 1999 he led a team at The Wall Street Journal that won for its coverage of the chaotic world of Boris Yeltsin.

Andy is a model correspondent: Drop him almost anywhere in the world and he knows the history and the key players, and can put together an authoritative article fast.

“If you set out to build the perfect foreign correspondent, you could hardly do better than to start with Andy Higgins,” said Kyle Crichton, Andy’s editor for many years and one of the finest story editors at The Times. “Elegant writer? Check. Deep and perceptive reporter? Proficiency in several languages? A wry wit to leaven even the deadliest daily? Check all of the above.”

Andy is at once compassionate and skeptical, serious and funny. He took us to Wigan, England , his ancestral home, to better understand “working class of the mind.” He took us to Lviv, Ukraine, to explore identity by introducing us to a bar named after a 19th-century writer, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, whose name and ideas inspired the word “masochism.”

Before joining The Times, Andy was China bureau chief at The Washington Post, from 2010 to 2012, but was based out of Hong Kong because the Chinese government refused to grant him a visa.

He began his career at Reuters, where he worked as a correspondent in East Africa, Central Africa and France. From 1987 to 1991, he was the Beijing bureau chief for The Independent, and then became the publication’s Moscow bureau chief, from 1992 to 1995. From 1995 to 1998, he was the Far East correspondent for The Guardian, based in Hong Kong. He went on to work for The Wall Street Journal, as Moscow bureau chief, from 1998 to 2004, and as a senior correspondent based in Paris, from 2004 to 2009. He co-authored the book “Tiananmen: The Rape of Peking.”

Andy was born in Britain and raised in Chicago. He graduated from Cambridge University with a master’s degree in Oriental studies and also attended Middlebury College, where he studied Russian and Arabic. He completed an advanced studies certificate in classical Chinese literature at Shandong University in Jinan, China. He and his wife, Martha Huang, live in Moscow.

In Moscow, Andy will work closely with our newest correspondent there, Anton Troianovski , who joins us in August; Andrew Kramer (who was also part of the 2017 Pulitzer team); and Ivan Nechepurenko.

Please join us in congratulating him.

Michael and Jim
