The advantages of an aluminum catamaran …

Construction

The Sailing Yacht Havana 72 is extremely stable, strong and seaworthy. The hull, deck and structural bulkheads are purpose-built in aluminum for its superior strength and unrivalled longevity.

Accommodation

The aluminum construction also has the advantage of allowing a greater flexibility for customization. The interior layout can be personalized to the customer’s needs and requirements. The sailing catamaran Havana 72 yacht is available in 3 versions. Each owner will find the configuration best adapted for his navigation schedule.

Designed for coastal and blue water cruising, the sailing catamaran Havana 72 features a shallow draft to reach the most inaccessible places and moor in remote and peaceful anchorages. It is also a “long distance runner” with a range suited to ocean crossing, perfect to sail around the world. With the excellent quality of construction and a very solid hull, the Havana 72 catamaran gives total confidence and peace of mind while cruising on the high seas.

Outdoor advantages…

Performance

The fine hull lines of the sailing catamaran yacht Havana 72 reduce the wetted surface and provide a smooth glide through the water. With an upwind sail area close to 300 m2, this catamaran guarantees a good performance and a great feeling. The flybridge seats, the large steering wheel and the location of the navigation instruments ensure the helmsman’s comfort. Visibility from the helm station is excellent. The centralized controls lines are brought back to 4 winches and particularly easy to use.

Comfort and conviviality

The hull and deck lines are modern, clean and in keeping with the interior design. The quality of the furniture and exterior lighting provide a warm and elegant ambience. The living space is vast with two seating areas, in the cockpit and on the flybridge. The wide side decks and flush hatches make it easy and safe to move around the deck. Spacious, the flybridge is also a friendly and comfortable living space with large sunbeds and a coffee table – the perfect place to relax with family and friends. A raising platform can be fitted aft between the transoms for bathing and for stowing the tender.

Comfortable accommodation…

Light and modularity of spaces

The saloon of the Havana 72 Catamaran , which can be adapted to the owner’s choice, is very light and opens widely onto the outside. The telescopic tables allow this spacious and friendly dining area to be converted into a comfortable lounge with a warm and relaxed atmosphere. The size of the portholes has been optimized to offer excellent natural light and fantastic views over the ocean wherever you are in the boat. The galley is extremely functional and well located in the port side hull with easy access from the saloon. The cabins are spacious and impressive with luxurious and versatile accommodation. In the aft portside cabin, the double bed is easily convertible into twin beds.

Created by Berret Racoupeau Yacht Design interior designers, the interior has been carefully designed with elegant lines and refined materials. The rich woodwork, indirect lighting and comfortable sofas create a serene and calm atmosphere, perfect for a blissful relaxation.

With over two decades of experience producing aluminum yachts, France’s Alu Marine has proudly introduced the Havana 72 , the very first of a new series in the Havana range of sailing catamarans.

Sturdily built for superior performance and designed for cruising on the open waters, the Havana 72 is extraordinarily seaworthy thanks to her aluminum deck, hull, and structural bulkheads. The aluminum construction will add to the catamaran’s longevity and superior stability making her ideal for long distance cruising in terms of not only speed and performance, but also great luxury as well.

Comfort abounds aboard the Havana 72 with an interior intricately designed with the utmost care given to detail by Berret Racoupeau Yacht Design , a renowned company with more than 30 years of experience designing the most innovative and luxurious vessels.

Catamaran HAVANA 72

Elegant lines and the highest quality materials are used throughout this first Havana catamaran including rich woodwork, comfortable seating in two separate areas, in the cockpit and also on the flybridge, and also indirect lighting that creates a calming atmosphere for guests to enjoy. Even specially designed portholes that offer the maximum light have been included to enhance the ocean experience offering spectacular views of the vistas ahead regardless of where you are on the boat.

Yachting in Cuba’s Sapphire Sea

Current Offers - Yachting in Cuba’s Sapphire Sea

Please send me more info and current offers for your Yachting in Cuba’s Sapphire Sea.

Travel Cuba in Style - Yachting!

Discover a Caribbean paradise on this Cuba yacht tour on the islands of southern Cuba, far from any crowds but rich in learning and discovery!  Sail with us aboard an exclusive Cuban catamaran to the Canarreos Archipelago to kayak, snorkel and explore this island wonderland.  Crystal clear waters where the healthiest reef systems of the entire Caribbean beckon us below to observe multiple species of tropical fish and coral and even sunken ships!  On the surface we choose different routes each day based on your interests.  We also bring a couple of stand up paddle boards on this yacht trip for those wishing to explore.  As we paddle, the rich island bird-life captures our attention.  Egrets, herons, gulls and osprey to name a few. We also see land iguanas and, on the island of Cayo Antiles, the only monkeys in Cuba!

You will not miss Havana!  Our Cuba yacht tour ends on the sea but begins in Havana where mix in some walking tours of the city, enjoy a classic car ride, visit famous museums and spend some time highly-respected marine biologists that share their knowledge of the reefs and islands we’ll be visiting.

From Havana we head southeast to the “Pearl of the South,” Cienfuegos, and board our private catamaran limited to just six-eight passengers per departure. This is a fantastic adventure filled with meaningful interactions with local Cuban people!

We set sail at night and in the morning awake to start our week of island paddling, learning, snorkeling and more.  In the words of guide book author Christopher Baker, the islands here are “Sprinkled like diamonds across a sapphire sea” and are “a yachting and diving paradise.”  Most of the islands we explore are only accessible by boat, and few make it to this remote corner of Cuba.  We visit a biological research station, a remote beach restaurant, mangrove lagoons and white-sand beaches with silk-soft sand.  At the end of our Cuba catamaran tour, we return to Cienfuegos where direct flights return you to the USA.

*Transfers back to Havana (3 hours) can also be arranged.

Yachting in Cuba's Sapphire Sea

Commercial flights from the United States to Cuba are the standard mode of travel between the two countries. We ask that our guests book their own travel between the U.S. and Cuba.  This tour will begin in Havana at approximately 11:00 AM on Day 1. Our meeting point on Day 1 will be Havana's Jose Marti International Airport where your Tour Leader and local guides will meet you to begin your tour.

If you are unable to fly all the way to Havana on Day 1 with an arrival before 11:00 AM, we recommend that you consider a "Day 0" for your tour and choose either of the following:

Travel to Havana on Day 0.   With this option, we recommend that you overnight in a casa particular (a private home with rooms for rent) of your choosing and make your way back to the Havana Airport to meet your Tour Leader, guides, and fellow travelers the next morning.

Travel to Miami on Day 0.   With this option, we recommend that you overnight in Miami and take a flight to Havana on the morning of Day 1.

We are happy to offer guidance with scheduling your travel to and from Cuba, and our office staff is ready to answer any questions you may have.

Note: Travel in Cuba requires a flexible attitude. Our days are full, and as required by U.S. law, we have a full-time agenda of Support for the Cuban People activities.  Cuba has it’s own beat and things don’t always run on time. The activities and visits listed are not guaranteed but we endeavor to do our best to provide the content intent of this SUpport for the Cuban People program.  Visiting developing countries can be eye-opening and life-changing, and hopefully visiting Cuba is both. Accommodations may not be up to the standards you are used to.  Sometimes the hot water or air conditioning doesn’t work.  We ask all our guests to appreciate the authenticity of your cultural encounters as well as the people, food, culture, and adventures that are exceptional in their difference.  Our local guide, along with your Cuba Unbound Tour Leader promise to do their best to make this a fascinating and enlightening experience.

Environmental Research Center and Havana

Our first stop on the Cuba yacht tour is at Cuba’s most renowned environmental education and research center where we meet our first guest-lecturer.  We are introduced to the area where we will be traveling by yacht, and learn about Cuba’s national preservation system of natural areas and particularly, marine conservation areas.  In addition, we learn about joint Cuba-US marine research projects that have been going on many years.

After lunch we have an information and intriguing walking tour of old Havana.  Mostly a pedestrian area due to the narrow streets, dozens of colonial buildings tell tales of swashbuckling invaders and eager colonists seeking to both sow and reap the island’s many rewards.  We visit the classic Plaza de la Catedral, charming and oozing-with-history Plaza de Armas, serenely beautiful Plaza de San Francisco and the carefully-restored Plaza Vieja. Our local guide spins yarns and intriguing facts to bring to life these historic, yet relevant places that anchor the city.

Later in the afternoon we check into our hotel and then head for dinner at one of the city’s finer paladars (private restaurants) where you enjoy a Cuban feast.  After dinner, those with energy may wish to enjoy some of Havana’s lively music scene, perhaps with a visit to the ultra-hip Fabrique de Artes Cubana, or a jazz or salsa club.

ACCOMMODATION : Havana Casa

MEALS INCLUDED : Dinner

Research Center, Art Project, Museum of the Revolution

We return in the morning to learn more from our friends and mentors at the research center to prepare us better for life on a Cuba catamaran.  Today we drill down into more specifics regarding some of the marine species we are likely to encounter, notably including various fish and corals.  Because of the lack of development along Cuba’s coastline, the waters surrounding the islands are the healthiest in the entire Caribbean.  Fidel Castro was an avid scuba diver and led an effort to conserve some of the most remarkable reef areas.

After our morning educational sessions, we head a bit further west to visit the art project of Fusterlandia, created by Jose Fuster.  An entire neighborhood is adorned with his colorful mosaics and creations inspired by Gaudy and Picasso.  We enjoy lunch at a nearby paladar.  Then it’s time to learn about Cuba’s history with an excellent guided tour of the Museum of the Revolution.  The story of Cuba’s political scene prior to 1959, and the ultimate victory of the Revolution is told through a series of rooms with photographs and memorabilia.

We return to the hotel, and a bit later meet for dinner at another fabulous paladar to talk about the upcoming Cuba yachting adventure.  After dinner there’s time to stroll along the malecon, Havana’s social center with beautiful views of the sea and city skyline.

MEALS INCLUDED : Lunch, Dinner

Finca Vigia, Transfer to Cienfuegos, Catamaran Orientaiton and Embarkment

After breakfast we step back in time with a visit to Ernest Hemingway’s house, Finca Vigia, where the author lived for almost 20 years and wrote some of his most famous works.  It seems the author walked away just last week, as his books, papers and furnishings rest as if waiting for his return.  From here we leave Havana, driving on the main road southeast towards Cienfuegos.  On the way we stop at the Criadero de Cocodrillos, a project run by Cuba’s Flora y Fauna (similar to the US National Park Service) that breeds the rare and endemic Cuban crocodile.

On arrival in Cienfuegos, we have a guided walking tour of this UNESCO World Heritage designated city.  In 1819, under the blessing of the Spanish crown, 137 French settlers arrived, coming from Louisiana and the Bordeaux region of France, to settle the city.  The deep-water port became the economic engine of this charismatic city that is the port for our comfortable Cuba catamaran.  In the late afternoon we board our home for the next six days, have an orientation briefing and dinner, and later in the night (weather permitting) set out under the Caribbean sky, heading southwest on our Cuban yacht to the beautiful archipelago.

Joining us is our Cuban captain and sailor.  Over the next six days there will be plenty of time to learn about their lives and thoughts about Cuba, its history, culture and politics.  This is the ultimate in meaningful interaction with Cuban people as our small group has these special days to converse and learn.  As we travel, we experience pristine reefs, beautiful optics, disconnection from the distractions of daily life and paddles that can be easily tailored to your interests and skill levels.

ACCOMMODATION : Private Catamaran

MEALS INCLUDED : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

First Day at Sea, Kayking in Islands

We awaken at anchor, set among a tranquil bay for our first glimpse at this spectacular marine ecosystem.  After breakfast we cruise a bit further, then lower kayaks into the water for our first paddle in the islands.  We continue a bit further west before finding a suitable anchorage for the night.  The day ends with what will now be our end-of-day routine.  A celebratory beverage while watching the sunset, followed by dinner on board and then a deep slumber in the Cuba catamaran.

Meals on board are fresh, delicious and bountiful.  Our captain and sailor double as cook and server, providing typical Cuban meals of fresh seafood such as fish and lobster, rice, salads and more.  There’s a full-bar on board and they also mix-up thirst-quenching mojitos, Cuba libres and other favorites.

Yachting, Kayaking, Snorkeling, Cayo Largo

For four more days, we yacht among the islands of the Cuban archipelago.  Weather and winds determine our exact stopping points and itinerary.  We stop on sugar-white beaches.  We paddle among mangroves to the rhythm of bird song and on waters the color of turquoise and jade.  We stop at Cayo Largo to visit a biological research station and meet the local scientists to learn about their work and discoveries. This is where Henry Morgon, the legendary English privateer, brought his ship for repairs and in the area are several sunken galleons.

From Cayo Largo we head further west to explore and anchor at Cayo Rico, Cayo Iguana, Cayo del Rosario and Cayo Cantiles.  Our days are mixed with paddling, snorkeling, beachcombing and relaxing on board.  By Thursday we turn the Cuba catamaran back to the east, stopping as we journey when a remote cove beckons.

Return to Port at Cienfuegos

We have started our return to the east towards Cienfuegos.  By late afternoon we’ve started our 8-10 hour crossing across the Caribbean, arriving in Cienfuegos in the wee dawn of Saturday morning to end this incredible Cuba yacht tour.

Adios Cuba!

It’s time to pack up and move off the boat by 11:00 am.  We will provide one ground transfer up to Santa Clara for return flights to the US. Santa Clara is served once-a-day for both JetBlue and American Airlines. For those returning to Havana we will arrange transportation (three hours, not included) and if desired, overnight accommodations.

Or, even better, join one of our weekly land-based tours!  We offer a sea kayaking tour, or a multisport tour starting on Sundays, a walking tour featuring Cuba’s National Parks on Saturdays, or two different bicycle tours that also start on Saturdays.  If you combine two tours we offer a 10% discount!

MEALS INCLUDED : Breakfast

Faq & more, do i need any experience to join the kayaking adventure.

Whether you are an avid sea kayaker or stepping into a sea kayak for your first time, you’ll enjoy these incredible trips. For those new to the sport, kayaking is easy to learn in the sheltered waters that we visit, and we provide all of the kayaking equipment and guidance needed. In addition, we keep our groups small so that you not only travel intimately among nature, but receive the necessary attention from our guides as well. Your guides will give you an introduction to paddling and you’ll have plenty of chances to practice. We take plenty of paddle breaks to observe the biodiversity and learn about the area from our knowledgeable guides. We do recommend that you get some paddling in before your trip as kayaking uses muscles you may not know you have. Getting a little experience and building some strength will help your enjoyment of the trip.

Will single kayaks be available?

We have both double and single kayaks in Cuba. At this time we are not offering the choice for a single kayak rental. Rather, we plan to bring between one and three singles on each tour to be shared among participants, depending on expressed interest.

What kind of equipment or gear should I bring?

All of the kayaking equipment is provided as well as personal flotation devices and dry bags. Just bring your clothing and personal gear. Do bring snorkeling gear and gloves. A complete packing list will be sent to you upon reservation. We highly suggest traveling “light” for this adventure.

Do I need to bring my own snorkel and fins?

While snorkel gear is sometimes available for rent in Cuba, we advise that you bring your own snorkel and mask (fins and wet-suits not required). Your own equipment also ensures a better fit and better hygiene, as well as prescriptions if needed.

What is the food like on board?

Meals on board are fresh, delicious and bountiful.  Our captain and sailor double as cook and server, providing typical Cuban meals of fresh seafood such as fish and lobster, rice, simple salads and more.  There’s a full-bar on board and they also mix-up thirst-quenching mojitos, Cuba libres and other favorites.

Can US citizens legally travel to Cuba?

Yes, you can travel to Cuba as a US citizen! Although, the United States is the only country that restricts its citizens from traveling to Cuba for touristic reasons, however, the U.S. does allow travel to Cuba under one of 12 permitted travel categories. Of these categories, most of our travelers are traveling under either "Support for the Cuban People" or "Educational People-to-People" travel.

For more information on Cuba travel entry requirements,  please see here .

Can I drink the Water in Cuba?

Generally it's best to drink filtered tap water or bottled water.  In an effort to reduce the use of single-use plastic, we encourage you to pack a wide-mouth water bottle with a filter built in.  There are many brands available.

Is ice safe to have in my drinks?

If you are getting a drink at a hotel bar, or other bar establishment, the ice is most likely made with filtered or bottled water, so should not cause any issues.

Can I eat salads in Cuba?

Cubans pride themselves on proper hygiene and food handling.  The restaurants we use on our tours are very good and eating any salads or raw vegetables that are served is fine.

Cuba isn’t just another Caribbean island – it’s a completely different world where money can't buy everything, says Rachael Sprot

Hummingbird at anchor off Cienfuegos, where classic Chevy is still an everyday form of transport

“If someone has to go to prison, I volunteer,” said new first mate, Neal, with a grin as we sat on Hummingbird in Cancun discussing our upcoming Cuba expedition. “Really?” I asked incredulously.

“It’s a life experience, isn’t it? I’ve never been to prison,” he replied. Neal is not short on life experience: from being headmaster of a school in Tanzania to summiting unclimbed mountains in east Greenland , he is quite the adventurer. A little brush with the Cuban authorities wasn’t going to cause him too much anxiety. I, on the other hand, was having last minute misgivings.

We’d been planning the Cuba trip for months: I’d joined every forum and Facebook group and dug up every contact I could find to research the current situation, but there was little information available. “Just don’t fall foul of any local rules or regulations,” was the scant advice we got.

I tried for the umpteenth time to get through to the Cuban authorities to triple check the arrival procedures, but to no avail. There appeared to be no requirement for pre-registration and everyone had their tourist cards already, so that was all we could do.

Hummingbird set sail for Cuba from Cancun

It’s an upwind slog from the lovely marina on Isla Mujeres, Cancun, to Cuba with the easterly trades blowing consistently. After filling the boat with food we watched the weather for some northing in the wind and set off. On port tack with the Gulf Stream on the leeward bow shunting us northwards, we made due east for 120 miles across the Yucatán Channel.

We abandoned our original plan of making landfall at Los Morros, the Customs point on the western tip of Cuba, as the open roadstead needs settled weather, which meant sailing on to the next port of entry at Cayo Largo, 200 miles further east.

It was a shame to have to bypass much of the south coast, but I wasn’t going to make landfall somewhere other than a port of entry, even for a rest in an anchorage. I’m sure Neal is a man of his word, but I didn’t fancy testing his gaol offer. Cayo Largo turned out to be a good place to check in. An easy approach through a large gap in the reef and well-marked channel led to a decent marina.

Never smile at a crocodile

The azure water and white sandy beaches were a welcome sight after the upwind passage and I had a struggle keeping the crew from jumping into the bay. The deputy marina manager Embellio met us on the pontoon. “Don’t go swimming”, he said with a smile. “There are crocodiles in the marina.” We weren’t sure if he was joking.

Soon the authorities arrived. The Guarda Frontera (Border control) checked our despacho from Mexico, issued us with an internal despacho for Cuba and stamped our tourist cards. You need permission to move from one port to another in Cuba, so over the next few weeks we’d become very familiar with their green uniforms.

The customs officer had a less conventional outfit: short skirt, fishnet tights and heels. She had a spaniel by her side, which jumped aboard. After various questions including how many mobile phones we carried and what type, our satellite phone was sealed in a bin bag with Cuban Customs tape around it. The spaniel took a good look around, decided we were smelly but innocent and departed. Finally the health officer took our temperatures while the agriculture officer inspected our provisions, sifting through our rice for weevils. We were given a clean bill of health and welcomed into the country. Phew!

Lines to Hawaii: a dream cruise chasing the Pacific surf from Tahiti to Honolulu

That night we ate at the marina bar, which served grilled fish, chicken and lobster while a local band serenaded us. The band was superb and it was very much the taste of things to come. As budding revolutionaries, we sang along and soon knew the lyrics off by heart.

Afterwards the waitress scraped the plates over the decking, straight into the open jaws of enormous tarpon fish below. They swallowed the chicken carcasses whole. We all stood transfixed when suddenly a scream went up: a crocodile had appeared on the scene. Embellio hadn’t been joking.

‘What’s the crocodile policy?’ Michelle, veteran of many Rubicon 3 expeditions, asked. I had to confess that although we have a procedure for everything from polar bear attack to man overboard, we didn’t have a crocodile policy. All I could offer was some advice from a friend who grew up in Zimbabwe: “You’ve got to stick your arm all the way into its throat. If you get your fist far enough down you’ll lock its jaws open and it won’t be able to swallow.”

In my professional opinion, things have probably gone a little too far by that stage. However I did discover that crocodiles are endangered and unlikely to be found in the places where you might swim, so I didn’t begrudge it the remains of my lobster.

Freedom to roam

Once checked in we had a little more freedom to roam. We were given permission to cruise the Jardines de la Reine, an extensive coral reef system further east. There are no permanent settlements, just coral, mangroves and perfect white beaches. The nearest town is 80 miles away so self-sufficiency is essential and we became heavily reliant on our watermaker. In four days’ cruising we saw only three yachts and a fleet of identical, grey fishing boats, which looked straight out of the USSR. We were all sheltering from a strong north easterly in Cayo Cuervo, a huge circular island with excellent shelter inside.

As soon as the wind dropped we set off for Cayo Algodon Grande. It was poorly charted so the dinghy went ahead and found a deep water channel into a mangrove-fringed lagoon. Once inside we had perfect solitude and set about exploring. The pilot guide mentioned a mile long dinghy channel to an abandoned holiday camp. Neal returned after an hour. “It’s more of a ditch than a channel,” he reported. It had clearly silted up since Nigel Calder was writing 20 years ago. There wasn’t much left of the resort, just a few lumps of concrete, but there was a beautiful windswept coral beach.

We made it ashore for sundowners and started ferrying everyone back to Hummingbird a little before sunset. It was a weird and wonderful spot, magical because there aren’t many places in the Caribbean that are getting wilder. The mosquitos were glad to see us according to Matt, Rod and Nick, who were in the last dinghy ride home.

From wilderness to civilisation

After five days cruising this desert island paradise we made for civilisation. The UNESCO world heritage site of Trinidad is just inshore of an approved yacht port, Casilda. The small marina couldn’t be raised on the VHF so we made straight for the commercial port. I employed my usual berthing tactic – seek forgiveness not permission – and tied alongside an official looking wharf.

It didn’t go down very well: “You’re in a military zone!” Barked an irate security guard, “Leave, now!” Juan, our Spanish speaker, tactfully apologised and with incredible charm asked how to proceed. We had to anchor in the bay and take the dinghy in to the shallow marina two miles away, where the Guarda would meet us.

cruising-cuba-provisioning-trinidad-street-seller

Three hours later we were checked in and two taxis arrived to take us into town: an immaculate pink Chevy and a red Cadillac. Trinidad is a much-loved time warp with a well preserved old town, ochre-coloured buildings and cobbled streets.

We were hoping to pick up some supplies but our first taste of Cuban supermarkets lacked promise. Long shelves were stacked one row deep with a single brand of tinned tuna.

The next aisle was devoted entirely to bags of rice and beans. “Cornflakes?” I enquired, “No.” “Fruit?”. “No.” “Eggs?” “No”. I asked where to buy vegetables. “I just saw the guy with the tomatoes go past the window,” the shop assistant replied.

I hurried out after him, and so began a long day hunting barrow loads of vegetables in a warren of streets, not helped by the fact that Cuban streets all have two names: pre- and post-revolution.

Cienfuegos, our next stop, was a short sail further west, where we’d make a crew change. It is another colonial town with grand pastel-coloured buildings arranged around neat central squares. By sea it is accessed through a narrow entrance but the harbour opens up into a vast inland waterway, although much of it is off limits.

We were allowed alongside briefly at the marina to re-fuel and check in before anchoring off with the rest of the ‘transients’. The nightlife was fantastic – there were rooftop bars and an open dance school where salsa students (who ranged from 18 to 80) were dancing the night away.

cruising-cuba-Cienfuegos-bar-Hummingbird-yacht

Disaster struck the next day when the rubber flexi-coupling between our Perkins Perama M30 generator and the PTO shaft for the watermaker pump failed. I couldn’t find the spare on board. Cursing myself for being so stupid we ran through the options. “Life without the watermaker will be miserable,” pointed out Neal.

“Yeah,” I agreed, “there’s only one marina with a hosepipe between here and Havana.” In any other country you could probably ship a part from the UK but the embargoes would have made that very difficult. Our only hope was that there might be one here – but it was a long shot.

Engineering ingenuity

We explained the situation to a friendly engineer on one of the tourist boats. He took one look at the coupling and shook his head. “The last time I saw one of these was on an old Soviet water pump in a 1960s apartment block. It failed and we couldn’t get another one.” My heart sank.

“But I did fix it with some rubber strips, and it’s still working. I’ll try to get some of that special rubber for you.”

“We’re planning to leave tomorrow morning…” I said. “Oh, I don’t think I can get it in time, not by tomorrow,” he said apologetically.

Reluctantly we decided to move on – the new crew were keen to escape the city heat and explore the islands. Besides, there was no guarantee we’d fix the coupling if we stayed. So we limited fresh water use to drinking and set off on the second leg of our trip: westwards to Havana.

cruising-cuba-trinidad-artwork-che-guevara

In Cuba, you’re never far from the image of Che Guevara

Knowing the scarcity of supplies in Cuba, Neal offered the marina manager some of our old alternator belts and asked if they’d like them for their boats. “For the boats?” she exclaimed. “No, no, no, I’ll take them home, my husband might finally be able to fix our washing machine!”

After checking in to Cayo Largo again we continued to Cayo Rosario, an uninhabited island with fine white sand and a sheltered anchorage through a gap in the reef. It was quite windy and although the echosounder gave some indication of the isolated coral heads below we couldn’t see them clearly due to the disturbed water.

We dropped the anchor in what looked like a clear patch, but when the chain abruptly pulled tight we knew we’d hooked one. Yorkshireman Ian jumped in with a snorkel: “You’ve got to unwind the chain by circling around it clockwise,” he said pointing to its position. To our relief it worked first time and he scouted out a clear patch of sand for take two.

While the crew explored ashore I thought about our predicament. We had a perfectly functioning watermaker and a perfectly functioning generator. Cubans wouldn’t wait for a supply ship; there probably wouldn’t be one.

They’d find a way around the problem with what they had to hand. I ransacked the repair box, eventually bolting some webbing to the flanges, realising that the webbing needed to be taut in the direction the shaft turns in order to minimise the shock-load as it started spinning. On the third attempt it worked! The webbing withstood an hour of running and looked like it would take more. With any luck we’d have enough webbing left to replace it every few days and make it to Havana without water rationing.

Out-of-the-way places

We continued westwards, exploring some of the coastline we’d bypassed on the way from Mexico. We had some fantastic downwind sailing in flat water in the lee of the islands underway to the Isla de la Juventud. Despite being Cuba’s biggest island it is also one of the least explored. The ‘marina’ is really just a shallow harbour that acts as a base for a dive centre.

It is 40 miles from the main town of Nuevo Gerona, but well worth the trip. We arrived on a Sunday when the town was in full party mode, with every variety of rum you could think of, a hog roast on every corner and families socialising in the streets. It was a very happy affair.

On leaving Juventud we’d hoped to visit the Cayos to the west before rounding Cabo de San Antonio and heading up to Havana. Unfortunately it was too windy and with no all-weather anchorages we pulled in to Maria La Gorda instead. The bottom was irregular and we were relieved to pick out one of the moorings in the moonlight. Ashore we discovered a small resort, a sandy beach (with pizzeria), dive school and great snorkelling.

For the final beat to Havana we had a choice: stay inshore for flat water but battle a one knot counter current, or head offshore to make use of the Gulf Stream but contend with the short seas of wind against tide conditions. There were a few longing glances at the Club Med cruise ship which floated past serenely, but there were also squeals of exhilaration as the boat rocketed on into the night.

At Hemingway Marina we were reintroduced to luxuries such as shore power, a walk ashore pontoon and showers with hot and cold running water (although you have to use a bucket to flush the loo). It is a vast, largely empty marina complex ten miles from the city.

Havana itself was a fitting place to end a remarkable month: it is a majestic, crumbling edifice to the rejection of capitalism. Cuba isn’t just another Caribbean island; it’s a completely different world where money can’t buy everything. In fact, it can’t buy very much but, as the Cubans are so quick to point out, everyone’s essential needs are cared for: despite the terrible condition of some of the housing, no-one is homeless, and although food supplies are basic, everyone is fed.

It left us wondering if we’d give up our material world for a simpler life, but in a way that’s why we go sailing. We have many things in common: self-sufficiency and an ability to live simply, taking care of what you’ve got and working with the environment rather than against it. And an appreciation of good rum. Perhaps the spirit of the revolution runs in sailors more strongly than most.

About Havana

Why is Havana a good sailing destination?

Havana, the charismatic capital of Cuba, has long seduced travelers with its rich tapestry of history, culture, and rhythmic allure. But it’s not just the cobblestoned streets and colonial architecture that beckon; the maritime treasures of Havana position it as a sailing destination par excellence. Yachting.Rent dives deep into why Havana’s waters are a siren call for sailors worldwide.

Havana’s coastal geography is a sailor’s dream. With the vast Caribbean Sea as its backdrop, the city boasts a harmonious blend of tranquil bays and open waters, offering varying degrees of sailing experiences. Beginners can find solace in the sheltered inlets, while seasoned sailors can challenge themselves in the broader Caribbean expanse. The steady trade winds, combined with the tropical climate, ensure that sailing conditions are favorable year-round, making Havana a perennial maritime haven.

Beyond the physical attributes, Havana’s waters are steeped in tales and mysteries. Sailing here is like navigating through a living museum. Historic forts stand sentinel along the coastline, while remnants of shipwrecks whisper stories of pirate encounters and colonial clashes. For sailors, every nautical mile in Havana’s waters is an opportunity to connect with tales of bygone eras, making the voyage as enriching as it is exhilarating.

But perhaps the most captivating aspect of sailing in Havana is the unique cultural immersion it offers. Anchoring off its shores, sailors are just a stone’s throw away from the heartbeats of Cuban culture. The sounds of salsa, the aroma of authentic Cuban cuisine, and the warm smiles of locals form an intrinsic part of the Havana sailing experience. It’s a place where maritime adventures seamlessly merge with cultural escapades.

Lastly, Havana’s eco-diversity is a treasure trove for marine enthusiasts. The vibrant coral reefs, teeming with an array of marine life, beckon divers and snorkelers. Secluded beaches, accessible best by yachts, offer pristine spots for relaxation or even a spontaneous salsa session under the Caribbean sun!

With Yachting.Rent as your trusted partner, the essence of Havana is magnified. Our expertise ensures that sailors don’t just skim the surface but delve deep into what makes Havana a remarkable sailing destination. From luxurious yachts to curated routes and local insights, we transform your Havana voyage into a symphony of memories.

In essence, Havana isn’t just a sailing destination; it’s a nautical narrative where history, culture, and the rhythms of the sea converge. And with Yachting.Rent, this narrative comes alive, one wave, one dance, one story at a time.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Havana

Sailing the charismatic waters of Havana is a dream for many. But, an essential decision awaits every sailor: to sail aboard a traditional sailing boat or glide through the Caribbean waves on a catamaran? Both vessels have their unique allure, and Yachting.Rent is here to help you decipher which might best complement your Havana maritime experience.

A traditional sailing boat embodies the very essence of classic maritime romance. With their sleek lines and rhythmic dance with the wind, they offer an intimate communion with the sea. As you navigate Havana’s coastal wonders, the responsive nature of sailing boats provides a hands-on experience. Their narrower builds allow them to explore secluded coves, anchoring closer to Havana’s historic landmarks. Ideal for purists, these boats also provide a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of old-world voyages.

On the other hand, catamarans are the epitome of modern luxury and stability on water. With their dual hulls, they promise a smoother sail, especially appreciated when the Caribbean waves decide to put on a show. Their broader deck spaces are perfect for sunbathing, salsa dancing under the stars, or enjoying alfresco Cuban meals. Catamarans are also known for their shallow drafts, granting access to spots even some sailing boats can’t reach. Their spacious interiors, often with luxurious amenities, make them ideal for larger groups or those seeking a blend of adventure and comfort.

So, what’s the verdict for Havana? If you’re looking to immerse yourself in the rhythms of the sea and feel every wave, leaning towards a more authentic sailing experience, the traditional sailing boat might be your vessel of choice. However, if your vision of a Havana voyage is paired with luxury, stability, and ample space for both revelry and relaxation, the catamaran stands out.

Yachting.Rent recognizes the unique desires of every sailor. Our diverse fleet, consisting of both world-class sailing boats and luxurious catamarans, ensures that every maritime dream is catered to. Moreover, our experienced crew can offer insights into Havana’s best spots, ensuring that regardless of your vessel choice, the magic of Havana remains undiminished.

In conclusion, whether you’re drawn to the charm of a sailing boat or the allure of a catamaran, Havana’s waters promise unmatched beauty and adventure. With Yachting.Rent, every nautical journey in Havana becomes a tale worth recounting. Choose your vessel, set your course, and let the enchantment of Havana unfold before you.

Cubans stage rare protests amid blackouts, persisting economic crisis

President points finger at US after hundreds of people demonstrate against food shortages and blackouts.

Police detain protesters in Cuba

Rare protests have taken place in Cuba as the island nation’s economic crisis persists.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel called for calm on Monday after hundreds of people gathered in Santiago, Cuba’s second largest city, to demonstrate against power blackouts and food shortages a day prior.

Aging cuban infrastructure means water shortages for havana, thousands of cuban migrants face uncertainty in uruguay, as cuba’s private sector roars back, choices and inequality rise, cuban embassy in washington, dc attacked with molotov cocktails.

Social media videos showed crowds in the communist-governed country chanting, “Power and food.”

Diaz-Canel blamed the United States for provoking the unrest, and his government summoned the US’s top diplomat to Cuba for meeting on Monday.

A wave of blackouts in Cuba has recently seen power supplies cut for up to 18 hours or more in a day. That, in turn, has jeopardised food supplies and economic activity in the cash-strapped country.

Cuba is battling its worst economic crisis in decades, caused in part by the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw the flow of much-needed tourism dollars plunge. Its economy has also long been stymied by US trade embargoes and recent sanctions imposed during Donald Trump’s presidency.

Diaz-Canel called for dialogue and “peace”.

“Several people have expressed their dissatisfaction with the situation of electrical service and food distribution,” he wrote on X.

“The disposition of the authorities of the party, the state and the government is to attend to the complaints of our people, listen, dialogue, explain the numerous efforts that are being carried out to improve the situation, always in an atmosphere of tranquility and peace,” he added.

The president blamed government “enemies” and “mediocre politicians and terrorists” in the US for trying to hijack the protests. Vedant Patel, a US State Department spokesperson, vigorously denied those allegations in a press conference on Monday.

“The United States is not behind these protests in Cuba and the accusation of that is absurd,” Patel said.

Meanwhile, the US embassy in Havana said in a post on X that it had received reports of protests in Bayamo, Granma and other locations. It urged the government “to respect the human rights of the protesters and address the legitimate needs of the Cuban people”.

The protests in Santiago were peaceful as demonstrators shouted, “Down with communism. Down with Diaz-Canal.” Videos on social media showed no signs of scuffles or arrests. A large number of state security forces were also in attendance.

However, internet services were down late on Sunday until early Monday, according to some reports.

We're seeing a five-hour dip in traffic to #Cuba coinciding with reports of a disruption in mobile service following protests in Santiago de Cuba earlier today. Havana cracked down heavily on large protests in July 2021, the widest demonstrations seen in Cuba since Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution. The response was criticised by the international community.

Since 1960, the US has maintained an economic embargo on Cuba, which restricts trade between the countries.

For the first time, Cuba turned to the UN’s World Food Programme in February, requesting help in supplying milk to children, the organisation said.

Walk the cobblestone streets of the Red Square or the banks of the Moskva River early in the morning, and it's hard to tell what century you're in.

Tsarist architecture, must-see churches, and glamorous shopping opportunities blend together for a visual experience you won't forget. For ideas on what to see and do while visiting Russia, here's our list of top tourist attractions in Moscow.

1. Marvel at the Size of the Kremlin

2. catch a performance at the bolshoi theatre, 3. shop at the luxurious gum, 4. make your way into lenin's mausoleum, 5. spend an hour (or three) at red square, 6. discover history at the museum of cosmonautics, 7. ride the stunning moscow metro, 8. explore the moscow state integrated museum-reserve, 9. spend a rainy day at the tretyakov gallery, 10. walk up and down arbat street, 11. stop by the vdnkh all-russian exhibition centre, 12. wander around gorky park, where to stay in moscow for sightseeing, map of tourist attractions & things to do in moscow.

Kremlin

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

GUM

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Komsomolskaya Station on the Moscow metro

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

Kolomenskoye Estate

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

Tretyakov Gallery

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Night view of Arbat Street decorated for the holidays

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

VDNKh All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Friendship of the Peoples Fountain

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Main entrance gate to Gorky Park

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. There's free Wi-Fi and sockets for charging your phone, as well as many food stands and plenty of wild animals, including deer, rabbits, and pheasants.

Visitors can rent paddle boats and bicycles to explore the park-and from May to October, there is also an open-air movie theater, as well as scheduled presentations by street performers, musicians, and artists. Gorky Park attracts the young and old, so don't be surprised to see a mix of people exercising, playing chess, and sunbathing.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

What was their favourite thing about Russia?

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Perfect itinerary for spending a week in Moscow! So many places to visit and it looks like you had a wonderful time. I would love to climb that tower. The views I am sure must have been amazing!

I was lucky enough to see the skyline of Moscow from this TV Tower and it is definitely mind-blowing.

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…
