Go Inside Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s Stunning $4 Million Former Yacht, “Sunday Money”

does dale earnhardt jr own a yacht

Now this is a yacht fit for a legend.

Dale Earnhardt Sr.   very tragically passed away right before the completion of his massive yacht he named “Sunday Money,” which is a 2001 model, 100-ft. Hatteras with five staterooms and a Detroit Diesel engine.

It was formerly located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and was named for the song country duo Brooks & Dunn actually wrote with Dale Sr. , and was later recorded for the album  The Dale Earnhardt Winston Cup Collection .

That specific record was done in conjunction with his 1993 NASCAR Cup Series Championship (his sixth title out of seven overall) and played at the awards banquet to honor him that year.

Anywho, according the Charlotte Observer , the yacht was built to replace a 1989 Hatteras 74 CPMY that Sr. used for deep-sea fishing, and it is such a shame he never got to take it out into the open waters, as he sadly passed away on February 18th, 2001 during a final-lap collision in the Daytona 500.

Hatteras Yachts Customer Service Manager Baird Paschal told the outlet that back in the day, it was a massive deal when Dale Earnhardt paid a visit to their shop on the coast in New Bern, North Carolina:

“NASCAR in those days was a big deal here, and it didn’t make a difference if you were a man or a woman.

Miss America came one time and didn’t get nearly the attention Dale Earnhardt did.”

Ya gotta love it…

And though “Sunday Money” was top-of-the-line with all the premium features and bells and whistles when it was completed in 2001, it has since been updated with all new electronics, new bottom paint and prop speed, in addition to the interior has also been remodeled.

Denison Yachting listed the vessel for 4.2 million in 2018, and the incredible ship also features a full-service custom “sunken” bar, alfresco dining & a lounge area.

They shared a very high-quality walkthrough video of the entire yacht at the time, and it’s downright gorgeous.

I know Dale Sr. would’ve absolutely lived his best life taking fishing adventures on “Sunday Money,” and it’s sweet to see they kept that “3” flag flying at the front to honor his memory.

You can watch the whole video here:

The song “Sunday Money” is nearly impossible to find anywhere in its entirety these days unfortunately, but is a whole song about the life of Dale Sr. and what a badass driver he was.

NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2019.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s ‘Oddest’ Car That He Owns Is a Boat

NASCAR  legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. has spent most of his life racing cars, from his trademark No. 88 Chevrolet to the vehicles he rode growing up in North Carolina.

The two-time Daytona 500 champion loves cars, and he inherited that from his father, Dale Earnhardt Sr. But of all the cars he’s collected over the years, there is one the iconic driver called his “oddest.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. calls his 1977 Cutlass a ‘boat’

NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2019.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s classic car collection naturally includes vehicles from either before he was born in 1974 or that were popular when he was a child.

The 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass is one of those cars. In a 2014 interview with Men’s Journal , the racing legend showed off a black Cutlass and referred to it as a “boat.” However, he also acknowledged its impact on NASCAR’s history.

“Back in ’78, ’79, and 1980, that was the car to have if you wanted to be competitive in the Daytona 500.” Dale Earnhardt Jr.

According to Men’s Journal, eight of the top ten starters at the 1980 Daytona 500 drove Cutlasses. Earnhardt admitted he didn’t love the car and how it operated.

What was the Oldsmobile Cutlass?

General Motors introduced the Oldsmobile Cutlass in 1961, over a decade before Earnhardt Jr. entered the world.

A popular muscle car-turned-personal luxury car, the Cutlass remained in for nearly three decades. The Oldsmobile division later introduced several spinoffs, including the Cutlass Calais compact and the Cutlass Cruiser station wagon.

Oldsmobile replaced the Cutlass with the Achieva in 1992. However, the Cutlass name returned in 1997. Two years later, the Cutlass ceased production for good.

Earnhardt has used his sizable net worth on his car collection

Forbes  valued Earnhardt Jr.’s career earnings at $410 million, which is more than enough for him to collect as many cars as he wants.

The 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass is only one of those vintage vehicles, which at least hit the open market when Earnhardt was alive. Older cars in Earnhardt’s collection include a 1967 Camaro and a 1976 Laguna.

The racing legend also owns a 1948 TK pickup truck, one with interesting design choices. The truck’s exterior is teal with signs of rust and what he referred to as “imperfections.” However, a quick glance at the interior shows a vehicle with a rebuilt drivetrain and a new chassis.

If Earnhardt is smart, he’ll make sure the cars are safe and protected from any harm. He won’t want to end up like baseball legend Reggie Jackson , who once lost over 30 classic cars in a warehouse fire.

Yacht owner keeps NASCAR driver’s spirit alive

Typically, when a yacht changes hands, the yacht gets renamed. Not so with M/Y Sunday Money , a custom 2001 100-foot Hatteras on display in the show this week. The current owner kept the name to “maintain the spirit of the yacht,” said Sean Johnston, mate/engineer.

Spirit may be an appropriate word as the yacht was built by Dale Earnhardt, the seasoned NASCAR race car driver who passed away in 2001.

And contrary to local lore, it is not — and never was — owned by his son, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt’s wife, Teresa Earnhardt, owned it after his death.

With some experience in smaller scale race cars and yachts himself, the current owner approached M/Y Sunday Money as a piece of history and has opted to retain it as best he could. Original Fiddleback Makore woodwork adorns the interior, as does Earnhardt’s custom compass rose design found in the flooring and several window etches.

The feel of the track is even evident with the semi-oval granite dinette, a nod to some of the famous NASCAR short tracks.

Several upgrades were incorporated in 2012 including wing control stations, stabilizers and enclosing the flybridge deck with canvas for all-season cruising.

“It’s an awesome sea boat, like a tank,” Johnston said. M/Y Sunday Money recently cruised throughout the Bahamas all the way to the out islands, as well as through the northeast U.S.

This is not the only yacht owned or once owned by a NASCAR driver or team owner. Driver Jeff Gordon owns the 106-foot Lazzara M/Y 24 Karat ; team owner Rick Hendricks has had several yachts and sportfishers, including the 164-foot Trinity M/Y Wheels ; and Trinity Yachts chairman Felix Sabates also is a NASCAR team owner.

Johnston did add that the owner keeps NASCAR trinkets onboard M/Y Sunday Money as well as a few mats with the famous No. 3 car (Earnhardt’s car) as a token to the history.

Named for the day when NASCAR drivers win their prizes, M/Y Sunday Money is docked this Sunday at the show. Walk by her; you just may feel the spirit.

Do It for Dale and Buy Earnhardt Sr.’s ‘Sunday Money’ Yacht for $4.2 Million

By Amanda Vincent

Updated on Jan 29, 2019 3:00 PM EST

Dale Earnhardt Sr. fans with a lot of money to spend have an opportunity to own a piece of Intimidator history by buying his yacht called Sunday Money. The boat Earnhardt ordered before his death in the 2001 Daytona 500 is now on the market for $4.2 million .

Sunday Money

Sunday Money

The yacht is a 2001 model, 100-ft. Hatteras with five staterooms and a Detroit Diesel engine. It’s located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and takes its name from a song Earnhardt co-wrote, also called   Sunday Money , with country-music duo Brooks and Dunn. A video set to the song was played in Earnhardt ’s honor at the 1993 NASCAR Winston Cup Series awards banquet at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York to commemorate Earnhardt’s sixth of his seven Cup Series titles.

Earnhardt also appeared in the music video for the Brooks and Dunn song, Honkey Tonk Truth.

Earnhardt never sailed the boat as it wasn’t completed until after his death, but through two additional owners, the yacht retains several Earnhardt-esque touches. They include the compass rose design, which was a part of the Dale Earnhardt Inc. logo, in flooring and window etchings of the boat; silver plates with a cursive “D;” and a Snap-On toolbox in the engine room. Updates have been made, though, including electronics and new bottom paint and prop speed. The interior has also been remodeled.

Inside Sunday Money

Sunday Money has been on the market for more than 400 days.

According to a Charlotte Observer article , the sea vessel was built to replace a 1989 Hatteras 74 CPMY that also is on the market for $390,000 . The late NASCAR legend used that yacht for deep-sea fishing.

“NASCAR in those days was a big deal here, and it didn’t make a difference if you were a man or a woman. Miss America came one time and didn’t get nearly the attention Dale Earnhardt did,” Hatteras Yachts Customer Service Manager Baird Paschal told the Charlotte Observer , recalling Earnhardt’s visits.

Another sport-fishing yacht, called “Intimidator,” is still owned by Earnhardt’s widow, Teresa Earnhardt.

Dale Earnhardt's Yacht is For Sale and it Has an Incredible Country Music Connection

Over 18 years ago, NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt  commissioned a 100-foot yacht.  Earnhardt personally designed the luxury watercraft, deemed Sunday Money, but sadly never got to enjoy it. The racing icon died on February 18, 2001 in a final-lap collision in the Daytona 500.

Today the yacht is up for sale for $4.2 million and features five bedrooms , a full-service bar and more.

As if the yacht wasn't already impressive enough, the watercraft was actually named for a song Earnhardt penned with country duo  Brooks and Dunn.   "Sunday Money" was originally recorded for the Dale Earnhardt Winston Cup Collection , a 1995 compilation album that also included Alan Jackson , Diamond Rio , Radney Roster and more.

A rare version of the song includes an extra verse that gives an inside look at Earnhardt's life off the race track.

Dale Earnhardt Sr. Hatteras Yacht For Sale With Denison

Dale Earnhardt Sr. Hatteras Yacht For Sale With Denison

January 25, 2019 2:17 pm

Nascar legend’s former 100′ motoryacht could be yours.

SUNDAY MONEY , the 100-foot Hatteras yacht that NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Sr. had custom-built but never got to enjoy, can be yours for $4.2 million.

That’s what Earnhardt’s dream boat lists for on national yacht broker sites.

Earnhardt selected the layout, interior and other features for the yacht, which took more than a year to build, Avery Brooks, associate brand manager for Hatteras Yachts of New Bern, told The Charlotte Observer in a phone interview Wednesday.

Earnhardt died in a last-lap crash at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 18, 2001.

The yacht “was close to completion” when Earnhardt died, former Hatteras Yachts Captain Gary McKeel told the Observer in a phone interview Thursday.

About a month after the Daytona 500, McKeel said, he joined Earnhardt’s boat captain, Terry Jones, in piloting the yacht from New Bern to Dale and Teresa Earnhardt’s marina slip in Palm Beach, Fla. “Two or three guys from the (Hatteras Yachts) factory” were also aboard, according to McKeel.

Hatteras Yacht Sunday Money For Sale

McKeel said he and the other Hatteras Yachts employees were then flown back to North Carolina on Dale Earnhardt’s private jet.

The yacht was hand-built to replace an older, 70-foot Hatteras motor yacht that Dale Earnhardt bought used and had refitted, according to Brooks. That yacht also was named SUNDAY MONEY, she said.

Earnhardt also had a 50-foot sport fishing yacht named The Intimidator, Brooks said. That was Earnhardt’s most famous racing nickname. Teresa Earnhardt still owns the sport fishing yacht, berthed at Cable Marine in Fort Lauderdale, Brooks said.

‘Down-To-Earth’ Despite Star Status Baird Paschal, Hatteras Yachts customer service manager, recalled in an interview Thursday how Earnhardt was such a “down-to-earth person” despite his celebrity status.

“NASCAR in those days was a big deal here, and it didn’t make a difference if you were a man or a woman,” Paschal said. “Miss America came one time and didn’t get nearly the attention Dale Earnhardt did” from the Hatteras Yachts workforce, which then numbered 700 to a thousand, he said.

On one of his visits to Hatteras Yachts, Paschal recalled, the seven-time Cup champion gave a Dale Earnhardt racing T-shirt to every worker. He then took the time to sign each shirt when the workers lined up for his autograph, Paschal said.

Hatteras Yacht Sunday Money For Sale Salon

Earnhardt ‘Touches’ Remain Many of the custom features Dale and Teresa Earnhardt incorporated into the yacht remain, despite two subsequent owners, Mike Fine of Denison Yachting , a longtime yacht broker founded in Florida, told the Observer on Thursday.

Fine is the broker for the third and latest owner of the yacht, who he said wishes to remain anonymous. Fine is based in Montauk, Long Island, N.Y. , where he said the owner lives. Sunday Money summers there and winters in Fort Lauderdale, Fine said.

SUNDAY MONEY is among only three such 100-foot Hatteras yachts for sale on the U.S. market, according to Denison Yachting and other longtime U.S. yacht brokers, such as Galati Yacht Sales and Atlantic Yacht & Ship Inc.

The other two yachts are Vesper of Hillsboro Beach, Fla., which is a 2002 version selling for $3 million, and Supernova of Fort Lauderdale, built in 2003 on the market for $3.4 million, according to their listings on those and other yacht broker sites.

Hatteras Yacht Sunday Money For Sale Galley

Teresa Earnhardt eventually sold SUNDAY MONEY, according to a 2015 article in The Trident, a nautical news publication.

A subsequent owner, whom The Trident did not name, kept features specifically to recognize Earnhardt’s role in the history of the yacht. Those include its original Makore fiddleback woodwork “and Earnhardt’s custom compass rose design found in the flooring and several window etches,” according to the publication.

Fine said all of the Earnhardts’ “subtle nuances on the boat have not been touched,” from the peninsula shape of the galley to the interior African walnut and marble countertops.

The original silver remains, including plates with a cursive “D” for Earnhardt’s first name, Fine said, and a custom Snap-on tool box in the engine room.

SuHatteras Yacht Sunday Money For Sale Staterooms

Flag On The Bow Honors Earnhardt’s Role According to its listing and a Denison Yachting video of Sunday Money, the yacht also features:

▪ Two 1,850-horsepower Detroit Diesel Corp. engines.

▪ The galley’s crystal and china displays, two Sub-Zero refrigerators-freezers and other amenities.

▪ A “wide-open” aft deck on the bridge that is “built for lounging,” according to Denison Yachting’s video.

▪ Five state rooms.

▪ Formal dining area with burl wood table that seats eight.

▪ Step-down, full-service bar in the salon.

The yacht underwent a 2012 refit with everything from a new transom and digital stabilizer to new wireless networking and carpets, according to the yacht’s listing.

Denison Yachting’s SUNDAY MONEY YouTube video makes no mention of Earnhardt’s past ownership. Yet a No. 3 Dale Earnhardt flag flaps in the breeze on the bow of the yacht at the end of the 9-minute, 31-second video.

Blog | Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s Yacht Just Hit the Market

Dale Earnhardt Sr. had a NASCAR career like few others. His most thrilling victory came in 1998, when, at the age of 47, Earnhardt won the Daytona 500. Tragically, just three years later, that legendary race would also be the cause of his untimely death. Rounding the final lap of the now-infamous 2001 Daytona 500, Earnhardt was in 3rd place – when, at 180 mph, he grazed one car and then fully collided with another, causing him to careen head-on into the outside retaining wall. He was killed on impact. Dale Earnhardt Jr., unaware of the crash that had just taken his father’s life, finished in 2nd place.

At that moment in time, Dale Earnhardt Sr. was in the midst of building the yacht of his dreams – but, like Steve Jobs, he would not live to see her to completion. That dream yacht, a 2001 100′ Hatteras, has just hit the market at an asking price of $4.2 million. She appears to be in excellent shape, having undergone a full interior, exterior and mechanical refit in 2012. Her electronics, teak and other areas have been updated far more recently.

Hints of the man who commissioned her are still there too – from the letter “D”, written in cursive, found throughout the yacht, to the black #3 Earnhardt flag flying on the bow. Yet it’s the name of this Hatteras that is perhaps the truest indication of the man who built her – SUNDAY MONEY. After all, as the winner of 76 Winston Cup races, Dale Earnhardt Sr. was a man who knew a thing or two about picking up a big check on race day.

Home of the Week: NASCAR Yacht Club? Inside Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Pirate-Inspired Key West Home

Click here to read the full article.

Avast me hearties, NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. is looking to sell his pirate ship-inspired home in the heart of ye olde Key West, Fla. for a big bag of gold doubloons, or $3.7 million in today’s currency.

Built in 1863 during the Civil War era, the two-story house celebrates Key West’s swashbuckling pirate past with a custom kitchen—sorry, galley—designed by Earnhardt Jr. himself, which could have come straight out of Jack Sparrow’s Black Pearl .

The wood-beamed room comes with piratical features like the menacing skull and crossbones mural, a huge ship’s wheel at the end of the varnished-wood counter, rope-wrapped pillars, sea-chest-like kitchen cabinets and parrots. Lots of parrots.

The staircase leading up to the second floor features nautical hemp-rope netting, more rope-wrapped pillars and a giant mural depicting a Pirates of the Caribbean -style island at sunset with swaying palm trees and towering peaks.

One fascinating, and original, feature of the home is the secret hatch on the second floor, designed to let the owner spy on blackbeards in the parlor below.

The home also has one of the largest and deepest swimming pools in Key West—it’s more than 14 feet deep, roughly two fathoms—and includes a gate on the second-floor wrap-around balcony so guests can be made to walk the plank into the water below.

“This truly is a unique property steeped in rich and mysterious history,” says Bob Cardenas, of Ocean Sotheby’s International Realty who holds this unusual listing.

“It really captures the spirit of Key West and, of course, anyone who dreams of being a modern-day pirate is going to love this place,” he adds.

Cardenas sold the home on Key West’s Eaton Street, a short stroll to the town’s landmark Mallory Square and Sloppy Joe’s bar, to Earnhardt Jr. and his wife Amy back in 2009, for a reported $2.4 million.

The couple proceeded to restore and renovate the historic property, giving it a fun, beachy, nautical vibe.

It likely provided the inspiration for the Earnhardts to take their love of property makeovers to the small screen. In 2018 they starred in a four-part reality TV series for the DIY Network called “Renovation Realities: Dale Jr. & Amy” where they restored another Key West fixer-upper.

When they finished the DIY renovation, they listed the home for $2.6 million and sold it within days.

As for the Eaton Street property, the quirky 3,300-square-foot house comes with five spacious bedrooms, 3.5 baths, nautical-inspired family rooms with a flotilla of wall-mounted model ships and a large, covered deck and gazebo next to the pool.

In the lush, tree-shrouded grounds there’s also a wooden clapboard, one-room guest house. According to Bob Cardenas, the Earnhardts drew up plans to turn it into a two-bedroom, one-bath suite, but never got around to completing the makeover.

Before retiring from full-time racing at the end of 2017, Earnhardt Jr. had amassed 26 career victories, including wins at the 2004 and 2014 Daytona 500s. These days he runs his own race team—JR Motorsports— and is an author, fundraiser for his Dale Jr. Foundation and a NASCAR race analyst for NBC.

His eccentricity when it comes to property is also seen in his sprawling 300-acre estate in Mooresville, NC, which he affectionately calls “Dirty Mo Acres.” It includes a vintage Wild West-style town, a treehouse, paintball course and five miles of ATV trails.

As someone used to spending his life lapping the racetrack at 200 mph, Earnhardt is no doubt looking for a speedy sale to an equally quirky homeowner for this Key West home.

Dale Earnhardt Jr looks on during practice for the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series Call 811 Before You Dig 250 at Martinsville Speedway

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Went From Being a Mechanic at His Dad's Dealership to NASCAR's Richest Driver

Dale Earnhardt Jr. ran his final season as a full-time NASCAR driver back in 2017, but even in retirement, the 47-year-old is busier than ever, hosting a popular podcast, working as a broadcaster for NBC Sports, and owning a number of profitable businesses. With an estimated net worth of $300 million, Junior's come a long way from working as a mechanic in his dad's car dealership , that's for sure.

Sure, being the son of Dale Earnhardt Sr. does come with its perks, but it doesn't guarantee success, especially of the magnitude that Junior has achieved over the years. He may not have garnered even close to the same Cup Series accolades as his father, but he did earn himself the moniker of "The Pied Piper of Daytona" for his two wins and six additional top-three finishes at the Daytona 500. Add on his two NASCAR Xfinity Series championships, his 15-time Most Popular Driver awards in the Cup Series, and his 2022 induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and it's clear that Earnhardt definitely paid his dues in the sport.

Though, as you're about to see, a lot of Dale's millions didn't just come from his prowess behind the wheel of a stock car.

Making Mega Millions With Hendrick Motorsports

Ralph Dale Earnhardt Jr. (that's right, his first name is actually Ralph, after his grandfather ) started his full-time NASCAR career in 1998, driving the No. 8 Chevrolet for Dale Earnhardt, Inc. in the Xfinity Series. His total earnings that year, the same year he won his first Xfinity title, were $1,332,701.

It took a few more years for Dale Jr. to start making the  really big bucks. From 2004 to the year of his retirement, Earnhardt made at least $20 million in salary and endorsements. His net worth really shot up when he left DEI for Hendrick Motorsports in 2008.  During his first year with the team, he earned a career-high $30 million, and for the next eight years in a row, he was the highest-paid driver in NASCAR.

Not surprisingly, Dale Jr. brought in a huge chunk of change from endorsements. In his heyday, Junior earned anywhere from $1 million (2000) to $23 million (2008) a year on endorsement deals. From 2000-2007, Junior was sponsored by Budweiser, and sponsorship on his race car was worth a NASCAR-high $1 million per race. He also had such personal endorsement sponsors as Nationwide, Chevrolet, Axalta, Goody's, TaxSlayer, and Wrangler. Then, there's merchandising. Junior's merchandise sales often represented a whopping 25% of NASCAR's sales and twice as much as any other driver. Looks like he was most popular driver all those times for a reason.

When he retired in 2017, Dale Jr. had amassed $410 million in career earnings. He may not be the GOAT of NASCAR, but he's definitely the GOAT of making money in NASCAR.

Junior's Ventures Outside of NASCAR

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been involved in a number of businesses over the years, both inside and outside the world of NASCAR. Some have flopped, and some are still going strong to this day.

In 2003, Dale and his stepmother Teresa Earnhardt founded Chance 2 Motorsports. While the company went out of business in 2006, Junior found much more success with JR Motorsports, a NASCAR Xfinity and Truck Series team that he co-owns with his sister Kelley Earnhardt Miller and legendary team owner Rick Hendrick.

Not surprisingly, Dale also got into the car dealership game, opening Dale Earnhardt Jr. Chevrolet and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Buick-GMC-Cadillac in 2012 in Tallahassee, Florida alongside Hendrick. Dale has also been involved in some more outside-of-the-box fields. In 2013, he partnered with NY Eye Inc. to start his own line of eyeglass frames, and he co-owns FilterTime, an air filter subscription service, with former NASCAR driver Blake Koch. Junior is also really passionate about the food and beverage industry, as he is the co-owner of the Whiskey River Beer and Wings restaurant in Charlotte, North Carolina and also announced the release of his own vodka brand , High Rock, in January 2022.

Media is really where Dale Earnhardt Jr. shines, both in front of the screen and behind the scenes. Of course, he's a broadcaster for NASCAR on NBC and also the co-host of the super popular The Dale Jr. Download podcast. He also runs the content company Dirty Mo Media and owns media production company Hammerhead Entertainment, which produced a couple shows for the Speed Channel and ESPN2 back in the day. Junior also has some solid movie credits to his name ( Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby , Herbie: Fully Loaded , and Transformers: Dark of the Moon ) and has appeared in a host of TV shows and music videos.

Oh, and Dale Jr. is also the executive director of iRacing, as well as part of the management committee. I don't know when the hell this guy gets any down time.

What Does Dale Earnhardt Jr. Spend His Money On?

Dale Earnhardt Jr signs autographs prior to the start of the 2018 Daytona 500

When Dale Jr. first started out with NASCAR in the late '90s, he was dirt poor. As he recalled in a episode of The Dale Jr. Download back in 2017, that first major NASCAR paycheck went towards something that every guy in their mid-20s can relate to wanting to have.

"I was living in a trailer and I had a roommate, Josh Snyder. He builds motor coaches. He just moved to Oklahoma." "But Josh and me have been great friends for a really long time. We lived in this trailer and we had a old TV that was given to us. I kept bustin' and kept having to send it off to get it fixed." "So, when I got some money. Me and him actually went to the the Power [company] to pay our power bill. Instead of mailing it in, we'd drive over to the store in the strip mall and pay it." "We're standing there, getting ready to pay our power bill. I turn around and there's this nice entertainment system sitting in the corner." "I was like, 'Josh! Look at that man!' and so we bought it." "We were pumped."

Now, Dale has definitely been able to afford some nice things with his money over the years. He and his wife Amy owned a pirate ship themed-home in Key West, Florida, which sold for $3 million in 2021. Today, he lives in a massive compound in Mooresville, North Carolina on 200 acres. He has a solid car collection, and he used to own a Cessna plane, though it crashed back in 2019. But, despite having some solid rich-guy amenities over the years, Dale lives a relatively frugal life. In fact, most of the time he doesn't even keep his wallet on him.

"Probably 50% of the time, I leave the house unintentionally without my wallet," Dale Jr. said in a NASCAR press conference back in 2017. "And it's a pain in the butt because I go over JR Motorsports, and I don't have my key to get in the door, and I have to get someone to come down there and get me in, which is a little embarrassing for the boss and the guy who owns the building. But I really don't spend money. I don't really go buy stuff."

I guess you really don't need your wallet when you're Dale Earnhardt Jr. It's not like he's getting ID'ed anywhere.

Born July 12, 1949, in Warrenton, N.C., Joseph Riddick "Rick" Hendrick III was raised on his family's farm, a stone's throw from the small Virginia community of Palmer Springs. It was there, south of Richmond near the North Carolina border, where his father instilled the value of a hard day's work and a pure passion for the automobile.

Under the watchful eye of "Papa Joe," that love of cars led Hendrick into the world of auto racing. At age 14, he quickly made a name for himself by setting speed records at a local drag strip with a self-built 1931 Chevrolet. Two years later, the self-described "gearhead" won the Virginia division of the Chrysler-Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest, a competition for engine builders. He was just 16.

A standout athlete at Park View High School in South Hill, Va., Hendrick considered an opportunity to play professional baseball before pursuing a co-op work-study program with North Carolina State University and Westinghouse Electric Company in Raleigh, N.C.

As his automotive business prospered, Hendrick was enjoying an equal amount of success in the realm of motor sports. In the late 1970s, he founded a drag-boat racing team that won three consecutive national championships and set a world record of 222.2 mph with the boat "Nitro Fever."

But Hendrick soon transitioned back into car racing, sponsoring and co-owning a limited number of NASCAR Late Model Sportsman Series (now NASCAR Xfinity Series) entries, which included a 1983 victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway with the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. as driver.

In 1984, Hendrick founded All-Star Racing. That year, the fledgling outfit fielded a single NASCAR Winston Cup Series (now Cup) team with five full-time employees and 5,000 square feet of leased workspace. With Geoff Bodine driving an entire 30-race campaign in the No. 5 Chevrolets, All-Star Racing finished ninth in championship points after earning three victories and three pole positions in its first season.

Rechristened Hendrick Motorsports in 1985, the organization today is headquartered on 140 acres of North Carolina property straddling Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties. The 430,000-square-foot facility houses complete engine- and chassis-building areas to support four full-time teams in the highest level of stock car racing - the NASCAR Cup Series.

Now one of the sport's premier operations, Hendrick Motorsports has garnered a NASCAR record 13 owner's championships and 14 overall: 10 in the Cup Series, three in the NASCAR Truck Series and one in the Xfinity Series (driver's title only). Its roster of stock-car drivers includes Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman and William Byron.

Hendrick currently is second on NASCAR's all-time Cup wins list (1949 – present) and leads all owners in modern-era victories (1972 – present). His Cup-level teams have won at least one race each year since 1986–the longest active streak–and averaged nearly 10 wins annually during the last decade.

A resident of Charlotte, Hendrick is vice chairman of the North Carolina Motorsports Association, a nonprofit group that acts as a proponent of the motor sports industry throughout the state, and recently helped lead the region's successful bid for the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

In 2017, Rick was honored for his contribution to motorsports and was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Hendrick even has a film credit to his name after serving as a technical advisor on the 1990 motion picture "Days of Thunder" starring Tom Cruise. Inspired in part by the real-life relationship between crew chief Harry Hyde and driver Tim Richmond, the film netted more than $80 million at the box office. In 2009, Cruise narrated "TOGETHER: The Hendrick Motorsports Story," a documentary-style film chronicling Hendrick's first 25 years in NASCAR.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Real Estate Empire

Dale Earnhardt Jr.s' North Carolina house

Legendary NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. doesn’t just race cars. He also has some impressive real estate.

In 2021, the semi-retired racer sold a pirate-themed mansion in Key West, Florida, for $3 million. That home was next door to a house he renovated and sold for a $500,000 profit with his wife, Amy.

Earnhardt also owns a sprawling property in North Carolina, which includes the recreation of an Old West town, a NASCAR graveyard, a massive garage and an enormous treehouse.

Take a tour of Earnhardt Jr.’s properties, past and present.

Dale and Amy Earnhardt

Dale and Amy Earnhardt won't forget their first DIY home project.

A Key West Flip

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Amy Earnhardt, contractor Steven Krieger

The first property is this historic mansion in Key West, which was featured on the 2018 four-part DIY Network reality TV series, "Renovation Realities: Dale Jr. & Amy."

The two took a completely trashed property and turned it into something awesome.

This is the before photo, taken in 2017.

The Front: After

Key West house

Earhardt and his wife may have renovated the house for a television show, but the couple had owned the home for several years before that.

They bought the home in a dilapidated condition in 2015 for $1.2 million — a sum that Dale Jr. told The Charlotte Observer was "a little bit more than what it was worth."

'We Didn't Buy It to Flip It'

Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

The Earnhardts, who owned a home in Key West since 2010, bought the home to remove an eyesore from the block. "We didn’t buy it to flip it. We just bought it to clean it up," Earnhardt told the Observer.

There was trash everywhere, and the previous owner had owned "multiple different sets and pieces of furniture, and everything was broken."

Although they initially just wanted to clean up the place, they decided to renovate it a few years later.

A $900,000 Rennovation

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s house

The Earnhardts earmarked $900,000 for the renovation, which turned into a complete remodel. Amy is an interior designer, but Dale Jr. wasn't used to being hands-on when it came to flipping properties.

"I knew nothing about renovation, and I know nothing about having to rebuild the floor and all the main bones of the house having to be rebuilt and torn out a piece at a time," he told the Observer.

Big Profits

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s house

The Eardharts sold this house for $2.6 million in 2018.

The deal closed one month after the two put the house on the market.

They made $500,000 on the deal.

The Kitchen

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s kitchen

The kitchen received marble countertops with reclaimed wood beams and copper light fixtures.

From Beat to Chic

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s house

The house was filled with termites, cat poop, spiders, bees and scorpions.

Renovations were tough, with further setbacks occurring because of Hurricane Irma, which shut down work for five weeks.

Getting Creative

Dale Jr. Renovating

According to a post on his Facebook, there wasn't a lot of space for storage in this Key West house. So they decided to "get creative" and build a closet under the stairs.

A Total OverHaul

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s house

The house has 5,968 square feet of living space with three bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms.

Amy's Favorite Room

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s dining room

Believe it or not, this room used to be an old, broken-down shed.

The Earnhardts almost tore it down, but they got creative and turned it into a small dining area with shiplap walls.

It’s Amy’s favorite room.

An Historic Property

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s house

The house is 157 years old and dates back to the Civil War era.

Pretty much the only useable stuff was the home’s bones.

Just about everything else had to be gutted.

The Master Bedroom

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s master bedroom

The master bedroom has large doors with double-paned windows that lead to the balcony.

They used an old door to create a sliding barn door for the master bathroom.

The Master Bathroom

Dale Earnhrdt Jr.'s master bathroom

The two spent almost a year renovating the property.

We wonder if there was some extra stuff stashed away in the cabinets in this master bathroom.

According to the old listing , Dale Jr. and Amy "placed some personal memorabilia as a surprise in the home."

Building a Pool

Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Earnhardt got hands on with the excavator and dug out the entire pool himself.

"I dug the whole pool out and filled in the cistern," Earnhardt told the Observer, saying he spent "maybe about two or three days total on the excavator doing all that. It was a lot of fun. It’s kind of like playing a video game once you figure out the controls."

His first time working an excavator left a lasting impression. "I could have totally spent my life listening to classic rock running an excavator for a living, had racing not worked out," he wrote on Facbook.

Dale Eardhart Jr.'s pool

The results were awesome.

The pool includes water features and a step-up spa.

It’s directly accessible from Amy’s favorite area.

Dale and Amy Earnhardt Jr.'s house

The deck is beautifully done.

The French doors open wide, allowing for some breezy indoor/outdoor living.

The Outdoor Kithcen

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s outdoor kitchen

The couple added an outdoor kitchen which includes a slate countertop fashioned from an old, broken heap of a pool table that was found on the property. The bricks used for the backsplash are about 100 years old; they were also found on the site.

The Outdoor Bathroom

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s outdoor bathroom

The outdoor bathroom includes a couple of really cool features.

The sink basin is a block crafted from the home's foundation.

The Foundation Sink

A closer look at the sink basin.

The stone block has been smoothed down and polished.

The Outdoor Shower

Dale Earnhdart Jr.'s hosue

The outdoor shower is Dale Jr.'s favorite part of the property.

The shower was painted by Kevin McCree, who also paints his race cars.

Home Renovation Success

Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Dale Jr. enjoyed renovating his first house.

Taking a Break on the Porch

The covered porch has dark hardwood flooring with light blue accents.

It looks like a relaxing place to spend a nice day.

A Signature Touch

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s house

When Dale Jr. and Amy finished the property, they signed this corner of concrete.

The House Next Door

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s House

One of the probable reasons why the Earnhardts bought and fixed up that previous house was because it was right next door to their other house.

The couple owned and sold this mansion for $3 million in February 2021.

Their Longtime Vacation Home

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s house

Records indicate that the home was only sold once before in the past decade, in 2009 for $2.4 million.

It’s likely that this was the house that the Earnhardts lived in since then, although it was not their main home (more on that one later).

A Nautical Theme

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s house

The Earnhardts gave this house a nautical theme, which is fitting, given the home’s location.

It’s just a couple of blocks away from the beach.

Earnhardt Jr.'s Dream Kitchen

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s kitchen

Here is where the Earnhardts' creativity really shines.

The entire kitchen was remodeled to look like a pirate ship.

Custom Made by the Legend Himself

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s kitchen

According to the listing , the kitchen "was artfully designed by Earnhardt himself."

Of course, his wife surely helped, too.

Treasure Over Yonder?

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s kitchen

The kitchen features a wooden, garage-style door with a skull and crossbones painted on.

We wonder what’s behind it.

Maybe some treasure?

Ahoy, Matey

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s bar

The bar —which appears to be made of reclaimed wood— is flanked by two columns wrapped in thick rope.

A Good Place to Whip Up His Favorite Sandwich

Pirate-themed kitchen

Earnhardt Jr.'s favorite sandwich is a mayo-banana sandwich. It's a light spread of mayo with sliced bananas on white bread. So that's something.

Gordon Ramsay did not approve. "Whatever Muppet put those two together needs to clean their core. Dale Jr. needs to call me," he said in 2017 .

The Kitchen Nook

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s kitchen nook

The kitchen features a kitchen nook that opens out to a spectacular pool and patio area.

But first let's head upstairs.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s master bedroom

The master bedroom has wooden floors and a vaulted wooden ceiling, with a set of French doors leading to an outdoor balcony.

The Upstairs Porch

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s upstairs porch

The second-floor balcony has one of the more intriguing parts of the home. The balcony has a gate that can be unlatched, allowing direct, free-fall access to the pool below.

Cannonball!

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s pool

Those daring enough to take the plunge will be happy to know that this pool is 13 to 14 feet deep and is "one of the deepest and largest pools in Key West," according to the listing,

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s pool

Of course, you'd have to be some thrill-seeker, or a race car driver, to take a plunge from the porch. The water is best accessed via the lower deck, which surrounds the long, fern-shaded pool.

The Compound

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s North Carolina property

Earnhardt Jr.'s main house is an 11,784 square-foot house located in Mooresville, North Carolina.

He calls it "Dirty Mo Acres," an estate 200 miles north of Charlotte that's set on 72 acres and is valued at $5.2 million.

Pictures of the inside are sparse, but the most intriguing area of this estate is located outside of his mansion.

The Front of the North Carolina House

A long driveway leads to the front door of Dale Earnhart's North Carolina house.

It's A Large House

Dale Jr. house in Moorseville North Carolina

We don't know the square footage, but Earnhardt Jr.'s house is quite large, with stone siding and a dramatic front entryway.

A Peek Inside

Dale Earnhardt Jr. North Carolina home

There are very few photos of the Earnhardts' main home in North Carolina. This is a peek into the foyer, which has an impressive pair of wood, barn-style entry doors.

Those Doors Are Awesome

A closer look at the doors from Dale Jr.'s Instagram, where he is giving a trick-or-treater some candy.

The doors are massive, with iron bars over the viewing windows.

The Old West Reimagined

Old West town at Dale Earhardt Jr.'s North Carolina house

He had a whole street's worth of shops and buildings constructed to resemble a town from the Old West.

He calls it Whiskey River.

Population: 88

Whiskey River

Eighty-eight people don't live in Whiskey River, of course.

That number is the Dale Earnhardt Jr. number, when he began driving the No. 8 for Hendrick Motorsports in 2008. He added an extra 8.

Earnhardt Jr.'s grandfather, Ralph Earnhardt, drove the No. 8 in 1957 at Martinsville.

It's Awesome

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s North Carolina property

The town includes a bank, doctor's office, postal service station, sheriff's office and barbershop. Although we're not sure which buildings are functional.

Chances are, most of them were built just for the awesome looks.

There's a Church

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s North Carolina church

Every Old West town needs a church to pay penance for bad deeds done.

It Was Built for Partying

Dirty Mo Acres

"I wanted to build a place for me and my friends, and I didn't want to destroy my house," Earnhardt Jr. said on "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel."

There's a Saloon

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s North Carolina saloon

Aside from the town's movie set looks, the Silverado Saloon is the highlight of Whiskey River.

That Is Fully Functional

Dale Earhardt Jr.'s bar

While it looks worn down from the outside, the inside of the saloon is flush with modern amenities, including a pool table and several pinball machines.

With a Classic Look

The Silverado

The bar, and the town, were featured in a YouTube episode of JRM 360 by JR Motorsports called "New Sheriff in Town."

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s North Carolina property

No Old West town is complete without a jailhouse.

Inside, there are working jail cells and a sign that reads "No whining, crying, outright blubbering or the likes thereof whatsoever! This is a respectable jail."

And a Livery

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s North Carolina livery

There's a livery at one corner of Earnhardt Jr.'s old Western town.

It looks amazing, with reclaimed wood hitching posts, but we're not sure if it's functional or not.

No Horses Here

The livery

Actually, we're pretty sure there are no horses over yonder.

Sure looks cool, though.

Stay at The Hilton

The Hilton

You might not get the five-star treatment here, but after a long night of partying, shamble on over to The Hilton.

Of Course, There's a Garage

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s garage

Naturally, there's a garage on the property with several of Earnhardt's cars, although not all of them.

Earnhardt Jr. reportedly has over 60 cars on his North Carolina property.

With Tons of Trophies

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s garage

The garage is decorated with dozens and dozens of trophies and racing jumpsuits.

A Retirement Gift

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s retirement gift

When Earnhardt Jr. retired in 2017, Talledega Super Speedway gave him this vehicle as a gift.

"Time to go to work. Rebuilding the brakes, adjust clutch, new carburetor, fix a few decals, change a little wiring and plumbing. Should be a fun project," he wrote on Facebook in early 2018 .

And a Basketball Court

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s basketball court

Calling this just a garage doesn't do it justice.

The building also includes a basketball court, which is decorated with race car frames.

With a Locker Room

The huge building has a locker room adjacent to the basketball court, and it has 27 lockers.

Earnhardt Jr. developed this property in 2002, a year after Dale Earnhardt Sr. died in the 2001 Daytona 500.

He Has an Awesome Treehouse

Dale Earnardt Jr.'s treehouse

Earnhardt Jr. had a huge treehouse built for him in 2015.

The treehouse, which is about 20 feet from the ground, was featured on the sixth season of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters."

A Place to Hang Out

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s treehouse

The treehouse is a sanctuary for Earnhardt.

"It’s a great place to sit back, drink beer and relax, unwind a little bit," Earnhardt Jr. said on his website . "Look across the woods out over the property and just take it all in."

There's a Gas Station

There's an old-fashioned gas station on Dirty Mo Acres. It's a convenient place to fill up all the cars, go-karts and four-wheelers Earnhardt Jr. owns.

Earnhardt Jr.'s property includes a go-kart track, which he clearly likes to use with his child.

There's a Race Car Graveyard

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s race car graveyard

Earnhardt Jr. collects crashed race cars (mainly just the frames after they've been stripped of parts) and has them placed in a race car graveyard on Dirty Mo Acres.

This one is the No. 24 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet SS that was driven, and crashed , by Chase Elliot during the 2017 Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Elliot hit some debris from another car, which slowed him down, and then was struck from behind by Brad Keselowski.

The collision ended both their races 380 laps before the race finished.

There Are Cars From Numerous Drivers and Races

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s race car graveyard

This is the No. 88 Hughes Construction Chevrolet, driven by Alex Bowman during the Ticket Galaxy 200 at the Phoenix International Raceway in November 2016.

Bowman's car bounced off the concrete and went careening into the barrier.

He finished 38th out of 40.

Wrecks from Recent NASCAR History

Dale Earhardt Jr.'s race car graveyard

This is "Amelia," a Chevrolet SS nicknamed after Amelia Earhart.

It was one of Earhardt Jr.'s favorite cars, which he drove to victory at the Talladega and Daytona 500 races in 2015.

But in 2016, the car spun out at both events and became wrecked after hitting a wall at that year's Talladega.

Charred Remains

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s race car graveyard

This National Guard Chevy SS was set alight at the Texas Motor Speedway in 2014, when Earnhardt Jr. smacked it into a turn wall and knocked loose an oil or gas line, which caught on fire.

Earnhardt Jr. wasn't injured in the crash, and he finished 43rd.

A Crashed Chevy Camaro

Regan Smith's crashed Chevrolet Camaro

This is the car that Regan Smith smashed up at the Daytona International Speedway on Feb 21, 2015.

Rival racer Daniel Suarez lost control and zig-zagged across the straightaway, then smacked into the rear bumper of Smith’s Chevrolet Camaro. The Camaro flipped and landed on its roof, then was struck again by three other cars.

Luckily, no one was hurt.

The Car That Crashed During the Qualifying Lap

Jimmie Johnson's Chevrolet SS

So what caused the crash? The steering wheel popped off, leaving Jimmie Johnson with no control over his car.

He was fine, but the car was smashed to uselessness (as opposed to being useless but in good shape) and now rests in Earnhardt Jr.'s race car graveyard.

Even He Doesn't Know Where All the Cars Are

Dale Jr. race car graveyard

Amusingly, even Earnhardt Jr. doesn't know the exact whereabouts of these dead cars. As he wrote on Instagram about this car:

"I’ve been looking for this car for about a year. Deep in the Race car Graveyard is Wayne Jesel’s land speed car that was converted from an old Xfinity car. These cars would compete on airport runways to run over 200 mph in a one mile trap from a standing start. I say I’ve been looking for it because my property manager never tells me where he puts the new additions. That’s just adds to the mystery of the graveyard."

The Taxslayer

Taxslayer No. 88

Earnhardt Jr. drove this Taxslayer Chevrolet Camaro during the 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway in February 2013.

This one was part of a crash caused by Brad Keselowski and Regan Smith, who clipped one another, lost control, and sent cars pinwheeling around the track. Alex Bowman's car smashed into the front of Earnhardt Jr.'s car.

Earnhardt finished the race in 14th place.

Danica Patrick's Race Car

Danica Patrick's No.7 Chevy race car

Danica Patrick crashed this car at the Auto Club Speedway in 2010 after being hit by James Buescher, who had been pushed by Brian Scott.

The high-speed collision sent Patrick's car into the retaining wall and briefly became air bound. She finished at No. 30.

Those looking for a more in-depth look at Earnhardt Jr.'s car graveyard can head on over to DaleJr.com.

"You felt that you weren't strong enough": Dale Jr.'s sister Kelley Earnhardt once spoke up about racing against men while growing up

T oday, NASCAR aficionados know Kelley Earnhardt Miller mostly as the co-owner of JR Motorsports alongside two-time NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Dale Earnhardt Jr . However, in a 2019 interview with Brown Brothers Harriman (bbh.com), the 51-year-old Kannapolis resident revealed that she used to be a good driver as well.

Kelley Earnhardt is an American businesswoman, the CEO of JR Motorsports, and the author of "Drive: 9 Lessons to Win in Business and in Life", a book that sheds light on her journey growing up to become one of the most influential women in the arena of motorsports. She is also the daughter of seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, the late Dale Earnhardt Sr .

Unfortunately, circumstances did not allow her to follow in the footsteps of her legendary father. In her final year of school, Kelley Earnhardt used to work at her dad's merchandising company, which the latter founded in 1995.

After work, she went to school, got back home at 2 p.m. on Fridays and raced. Sometimes, she would even race over the weekends. She recalled herself being one of the few female drivers at the time.

"Eventually, I had to make a choice – was I going to race or work?" Miller said. "It was different for my brothers, Dale Jr. and Kerry, because they worked in the shops, so they were able to work on their cars and take their cars racing, while I had a regular day job."
"I often heard, "Kelley, the shop isn't a place for girls." It was just hard. You felt that you weren't strong enough, fast enough or good enough because you were a girl," she added.

Nevertheless, Kelley Earnhardt shone to prominence as the co-owner of JR Motorsports. Since its inception, the Chevy team has amassed three championships and 58 national series victories. Currently, JR Motorsports is the home to four Xfinity Series drivers: Justin Allgaier, Brandon Jones, Sam Mayer, and Sammy Smith.

Kelley Earnhardt on the position of women in NASCAR today

Kelley Earnhardt Miller thinks that NASCAR is more open to women today and that there are more opportunities for women racers to make it big in the sport. Recalling the times when women were more into handling the PR and the business side of things, she said (in the aforementioned interview):

"The sport has changed, and it's more open to women. Throughout my career, many women have worked in racing, especially in public relations and marketing roles, but not on the competition side of the business."

According to Miller, it is unfortunate that the competitive nature of the sport does not highlight the role of women in it.

"Unfortunately, our sport is viewed from a competition angle, so you don't see all the women who are a part of it," she explained. "There are female engineers, tire specialists and pit crew members who all travel with the road crew on the weekends."

Nevertheless, she expressed happiness about the fact that several women like Danica Patrick in the past and others like Hailie Deegan and Toni Breidinger in the present are well-known NASCAR racecar drivers in their own right.

Dale earnhardt jr. opens up on why he hid his smoking and how he quit.

NASCAR XFINITY and Truck Series Banquets

For the first 15 years or so of his high-profile NASCAR career, Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a secret that he kept from fans, media and sponsors.

But most importantly he kept it from his father.

There had been times that Dale Earnhardt had entered his son’s house unannounced and seen the ashtrays full of cigarette butts.

And while his mother, uncle and grandparents also indulged in smoking, Earnhardt’s seven-time champion father didn’t, nor did he approve of it.

“When I was a kid, everyone seemed to be smoking except for dad for whatever reason. He just never did,” Earnhardt Jr. told NBCSports.com in a phone interview Tuesday morning during a round of media appearances in which he spoke about his former habit in-depth publicly for the first time. “He knew I did, and I never, ever would have let him see me holding a cigarette. He hated it. We never had a conversation about it. He might have said a few times, ‘You need to effing quit that.’ Or something like that real short.

“I know that was something that extremely disappointed him.”

Ultimately, it was another family member who helped Earnhardt Jr. snap the habit about eight years ago.

Earnhardt’s wife, Amy, put up with his smoking the first few months after they began dating.

“I was trying to quit and tried a couple of times and failed, and it was so disappointing for her,” he said. “Eventually she said to me, ‘Look man, are you really going to get this done? Are you really going to eventually quit?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know if I can.’ And she goes well, ‘Honestly, that could be a dealbreaker for me.’ And I said, ‘Damn, really?’

“She said, ‘Yeah, if you’re not sure, and this is something that is going to be part of our relationship going forward, I just don’t know. So that was a tough conversation that had to be had, and I finally figured out how to get it out of my system when I truly wanted to quit. You have to have that conviction to do it, but it was really, really hard.”

DaleJr_Nicorette-432

Earnhardt, who just launched a video campaign with Nicorette to help promote its new coated ice mint lozenge that helps smokers quit , said he wanted to help be a coach on the journey for other people trying to quit.

“I figured it wasn’t a super-duper secret that I was a smoker, but maybe it might be worth exposing that little lie and secret to see if I can convince other people to quit because honestly, once I decided to quit, I didn’t realize all the things that smoking was affecting in my life,” he said. “And I was super insecure about it.

“Obviously I didn’t want anybody to know about it, but I worried about whether my car smelled, my clothes smelled, my breath smelled, and then I worried about my long-term health. I had a doctor that’s pretty straightforward, and he’s hammering on me all the time that, ‘Like, dude, you’ve got to quit.’ I seemed to get a lot of sore throats and a lot of colds more frequently than other people that weren’t smokers.

In addition to feeling much healthier, Earnhardt said it changed him for the better socially as well.

“I realized how much control (smoking) had over me,” said the NASCAR on NBC analyst, who also has been open about the impact Amy and Steve Letarte had on him getting out more . “The decisions I made every day were based around smoking. It sort of encouraged that hermit mentality that I had before me and Amy met. Where I wouldn’t go anywhere, do anything. You wouldn’t hardly see me leave the bus on a race weekend. I would shorten visits with family on holidays and just avoid activity.

“I’d just sit in the house and play video games because I could smoke. Then I realized once I got done how much that was dictating my day and predicting the choices I made every day. It was all based around my habit of smoking, and that’s pretty stupid, but it’s true.”

Earnhardt said he picked up smoking in his early 20s, just before he began running in the Xfinity Series, while being around friends who did it.

He hid the vice in public because of the worries about his persona ( which already had been associated in his youth with wild partying at the “Club E” makeshift nightclub in his basement ). While NASCAR also was affiliated with tobacco through having R.J. Reynolds as the title sponsor of its top series for more than 30 years, Earnhardt said there was a “negative stigma that was building” about smoking when he took it up.

“It wasn’t popular, cool or trendy,” he said. “I wasn’t so much worried about sponsors as just worried about disappointing people. I just tried not to really push it in front of anyone’s face. I wouldn’t walk up and down pit road holding a cigarette. I just thought that would be a mess.

“People would be like, ‘What the hell are you doing? Get your head on straight. You’re supposed to be this race car driver,’ and I already had people questioning my focus and my determination. If I’m walking around smoking a cigarette on Saturday between practices, I’m sure that was going to just feed into that.”
