Dream Yacht Charter opens new base in Malta

Dream Yacht Charter will open its 26th Mediterranean base in Malta in 2019. Close to Valetta in Port Roland, Ta’ Xbiex, the base will be home to five boats – three monohulls and two catamarans, available for bareboat charters year round, starting in April 2019.

Malta enjoys a typically dry, Mediterranean climate, which gives a long sailing season. In the spring, temperatures are around 25ºC before peaking in the summer months at an average of around 30ºC. Sailors heading to Malta in the autumn can enjoy temperatures of around 23ºC through to mid-October.

Sailing conditions in Malta offer an easy going charter with plenty of opportunities for sheltered bays and anchorages. Winds average Force 2-3 and there are several wind systems, including the prominent north westerly gregale which brings dry weather and the sirocco which beings hot, humid weather from Africa.

“Next year is shaping up to be really exciting with the launch of our new bases in Madagascar, Belize, St. Lucia and now Malta,” says Dream Yacht Charter founder, Loïc Bonnet.

“Malta is a fantastic destination providing calm sailing for novice sailors, as well as a longer passage to Sicily for those with more experience who want to charter for more than a week. Dream Yacht Charter opens base in Malta

Dream Yacht Charter has opened a new Malta base in Port Roland Marina, Ta’Xbiex Creek, Marsamxetto Harbour, close to Valletta. The marina is in the heart of Malta’s yachting community, with bars, restaurants, chandleries and supermarkets nearby. Facilities include wi-fi, laundry, cleaning, provisions, showers, taxis and security.

Situated between Sicily and the North African coast, the archipelago of Malta, Gozo and Comino is renowned for its diving sites, blue grottos, natural swimming pools and lagoon. There are UNESCO heritage sites, Roman catacombs at Rabat, the ancient walled cities of Mdina and Valletta, as well as a number of regional festivals.

Fiddlers Dream  was built for her English Owner  that cruised Florida and  the Bahamas for two years, then  she  was shipped to Europe and  was based in Cannes and  now resides in Malta. She  has always kept Her MCA class and  is ready  for worldwide cruising with her ASEA 60 -50 Hz transformer.  Built to Germanischer Lloyd Specification and certification, the Yacht has always been professionally maintained.  The bottom  has a Copper coat.   Much of her interior cabinetry was custom built by Design  Unlimited in the UK;  and  she  is possibly the most  elegant yacht available under  120 feet.   High end  Crockery, crystal glassware and  solid silver cutlery are  all included. The view from the raised pilothouse is excellent and  you can  see outside in all directions. The master stateroom is below the Pilothouse in the center of the yacht and  is full beam. The 1,015HP CAT's will let you cruise efficiently at 8 knots while using  about  1 Gallon Per  nautical Mile and  she  will top out at almost 19 knots.   She  has a high cruise of 16-17  knots depending on load.  Her 3,000  gallons of fuel will allow you to go 3,000+  miles at trawler speeds. There  are  4 staterooms for owners and  guests with three  full heads. Fiddlers Dream  was built with full crew quarters aft for a captain and  mate  that can  be accessed without entering the salon.

The enclosed command bridge allows the standard large lower helm area to become a beautiful dining area forward of the galley. The Pilothouse is very spacious. Instead of a large lower station that is unnecessary in a Command Bridge model a large seating area with teak table is located forward and  a small helm on the Starboard Side. The galley is aft of the dining area and  is open  to the salon. Also to starboard there  is a staircase that leads below to the staterooms. The small helm was built to allow an owner  / operator to join the family in the pilothouse and  operate the vessel when offshore on longer passages. This station has a new Ray marine chart  plotter that can  display all navigation related information.

The galley is centrally located on the main deck  at the aft end  of the pilothouse. The pilothouse is three  steps up from the salon. An opening under  the aft galley cabinets allows visibility right through  to the salon and  aft deck.  The galley counters are  Black Galaxy granite and  the undermounted sink is on the Aft side  of the galley counter. The Gagganau cooktop  on the starboard side  of the U-shaped counter has removable stainless steel sea rails to keep pots from moving about  on the smooth glass cooktop.  Under  the cooktop  is a Gagganau Oven.   The Sub  Zero refrigerator and  freezer drawers are  on the forward end  of the galley right in front of the sink and  dishwasher. The galley has generous cabinet space above and  below the counters.

Master Stateroom

What an Elegant room!  When  you walk in you will wonder if you have stepped on a fine yacht twice her size.  There  is no yacht in her class that comes close to the cabinetry and overall feel of the Master stateroom of Fiddlers Dream.  The full beam owner's suite is just forward of the engine room amidship, and  is separated from the engine room by insulated bulkhead and  fuel tanks.  The bed  is center-line and  there  are  Cherry  nightstands on each side  of the bed  with fabric insert panels and  very attractive lighting. The head is aft of the bedroom on the starboard side and  has a double sink, Tecma Quietflush  toilet, Bidet, and  large stall shower. To aft Port side  is a walk in closet. There  are  many  hanging lockers and  lots of drawer  space. The 40" TV is hidden in a custom made cabinet and  is on a power  lift when  you want to view it. Six opening port lights let plenty of light in.

The upper  helm station is fully enclosed and  fully finished like the rest  of the yacht.   The twin Crown Helm Chairs give you a great  view in all directions when  piloting the vessel.  You have  easy access to the wheel and  3 new 24" Raymarine touchscreens.

Aft of the Helm chairs there  is a large L-Settee and  table.  On the port side  there  are  fitted cupboards and  drawers for storage.  When  traveling 6 adults are  comfortable and  have  an amazing view.  When  you go out the Aft door of the Command Bridge

The engine room has full standup headroom and  is air-conditioned. There  is good  access to all sides of the engines. The sea chest is at the forward end  of the engine room and  provides sea water  to the engines, generator, air-conditioning, and  all the other  items on the yacht that need sea water  for cooling. Each  item has its own shut-off valve for servicing. The Single 3000  gallon fuel tank is just in front of the forward engine room bulkhead. This is the center of buoyancy of the yacht so your running angle will not change as your fuel level changes. The fuel tank also provides an additional layer of soundproofing between the engines and  the cabins forward.

Crew Quarters

The full beam crew quarters are aft of the engine room and feature twin bunks, night stand, hanging lockers and their own washer and dryer. The crew has their own head with shower. This area is accessed from a separate entrance in the cockpit so the crew does not need to enter  the salon to access their quarters. There  is also a full height hydraulic transom door that provides access  while not at sea. This door takes you through  the storage area and  crew quarters to the engine room.

Malta is placed in the Middle of the Mediterranean Sea on the cusp of the Western Mediterranean and Eastern Mediterranean luxury yacht charter grounds. Valletta on its own has plenty to fill your days: Begin your exploration of its history in the unmissable National War Museum in Fort St. Elmo - while Malta has several war museums, this is the most comprehensive and well maintained. Next door, the Knights Hospitallers is worth a look and is an atmospheric venue for events, while out in the fresh air the highly maintained Lower Barrakka Gardens give magnificent views out over the harbour. Visitors venturing into the town centre have the opportunity to enter The Grandmaster Palace Courtyard to learn more about the city's storied past. As the sun sets, discover the vibrant bar and club scene along the waterfront.

As you leave behind the crowds and spend your time in transit dining alfresco or sunbathing on the sundeck, and find a serene cove to anchor and sleep in peace surrounded by the sounds of nature.

Inland, Mdina is known for its bars and pedestrianised shopping streets, and in particular for the Silent City where there are historical treasures and a collection of Caravaggio paintings. St. Paul's Catacombs is also an incredible and worthwhile tour before your head down the southern roads to the 3200 BC ruins of Ħaġar Qim and the Blue Grotto, one of the most stunning natural sites in Malta.

The sleepy island of Gozo is a part of the Malta archipelago and is thought to be the legendary "Calypso’s Isle" of Homer’s Odyssey. It’s a peaceful, mystical backwater, with rugged landscape and spectacular coastline. Pull into rocky inlets or red sand beaches and spend hours entertaining yourself snorkelling, fishing and Scuba diving amongst some of the Mediterranean's best dive sites.

This destination is popular with older travellers who enjoy the peace and quiet, lack of modern development and retention of the old traditions. Many of the buildings are still made from natural stone instead of concrete so Gozo has an atmosphere all of its own.

Comino is a small inhabited island with only four people living there. Although there is a hotel, many visitors just come for the day to dive in the famous Blue Lagoon, leaving the rest of the island bays and beaches to your group. By kayak, paddleboard or tender, take your time amongst the Santa Maria and Julia caves to the west, where the white cliffs and topaz blue sea are perfect for adventurers and for artists and photographers to capture.

The Blue Lagoon is fairly busy from 10 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon, after which luxury yacht charter parties will have the place to themselves. Travel south to the natural amphitheatre of the Crystal Lagoon with its steep cliffs and glassy green water, which provides excellent seclusion for an overnight anchorage.

Yachting seasons & climate:.

Malta has an inviting year-round climate, where the winter season temperature drops to a warm average of 13°C/55°F and summer soars to a comfortable 27°C/81°F, with a high of 32°C/90°F.

From July to September the sea temperature sits around 26°C/79°F and are wonderfully warm for snorkelling, watersports and for beginner Scuba divers heading down to depths around 10m/33ft.

July is the driest month with little to no rainfall, and November through to January is the wettest season and visitors should plan their wardrobe accordingly.

Clothing to Pack For Your Charter:

Although there are some excellent beaches across the three main islands of Malta, visitors are most likely to spend their time exploring the streets of Valetta and the ruins to be found from the coast through to the interior. As such, a sturdy pair of hiking boots and a lightweight jacket is recommended, and visitors might want to include a long pair of trousers for walking along overgrown trails.

In town, smart-casual dress is typically seen for the cafes, bars and clubs as well as visiting the numerous museums, galleries and religious sites.

Best time to go:

Like most of the Mediterranean, the Malta yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August tends to have the best weather, as these are the hottest months with lighter winds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes.

Other good times to charter your yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are still comfortable, and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers.

Autumn can be a great time to visit when the sea temperatures are still warm and there is a significant amount of sunshine, however visitors should expect short sharp thunderstorms during the evenings of this season.

Crewed Charters

If you  are unsure  of your sailing abilities, or simply want the knowledge of a local skipper, a Skippered charter should be your choice! You can hire a professional captain at a daily rate, then  continue on  your own when you feel comfortable. If you’d rather not cook, hire a chef and have  all of  your meals prepared for you.  

A  By  The  Cabin  charter is convenient for both sail-worthy folk and inexperienced sailors. Arriving at your dream destination and delighting yourself with a unique experience together with family and loved ones.  

How it works:  

Just as one would do on a cruise ship, you rent a cabin on the decided upon yacht with your own private amenities at your disposal. Instead of being in the company of many other people, you shall be accompanied by only a couple of new faces which most of the time prompts to great times with new faces. It could occur to also end up being with familiar faces as sometimes families decide to book all the cabins of the yacht.

Getting to know noel grech, skipper of gozo dream.

What inspired you to participate in the Rolex Middle Sea Race for the first time?

Where the Rolex Middle Sea Race is concerned, this will be my fourth time. The three other times – the first experience was in 1996, was on Willie Carbonaro’s boat Bordeau. My skipper James Pace has done it seven times.   It has been a dream of ours – since 1996 – to have a full team from Gozo. That is how the Gozo Sailing Club was born.  

I have been a bit out of the scene since in the three years I did not have a boat, eventually I found a well raced First 40.7 which we brought down from Imperia in Italy – 75% of my crew were on the boat so this was good training for us.

Can you describe your sailing background and experience leading up to this race?

I started sailing when I was 14 years old. I would borrow every kind of boat – Maurauders, Lasers, Hobies and windsurfers – I was a keen windsurfer for many years – never afraid of the weather.   Weather has been unpredictable of late and whilst I am keen on strong winds, the boat is better suited for moderate winds!

How did you assemble your racing crew, and what are their roles on the boat?

The crew is made up from members of the Gozo Sailing Club. We have known each other for a number of years.  Our oldest member – Joe Sultana is 74 years old!  Every position on the boat is duplicated to ensure that shifts are covered .

What kind of boat are you sailing in, and how have you prepared it for this race?

We will be sailing a First 40.7, before choosing her we looked at various 40 foot boats in the winter, even going up to the Southern coast of France and Italian riviera. Eventually we settled for our Gozo Dream!  Most of the crew have their own boats however they are not racing boats but regularly go out together around the coast of Gozo. We have been friends for a long time so we are very comfortable to be ourselves in each other’s company.

What challenges are you expecting to face during the Rolex Middle Sea Race, and how have you trained to overcome them?

The weather, which is unpredictable along the course , will be one of the major challenging factors.  However we are preparing to ensure that we are a united team, ensuring that we are prepared by eating and resting at the appropriate times, so we are ready to face the endurance race and the challenges that we will encounter from start to finish.

Have you studied the racecourse thoroughly, and do you have any specific strategies or tactics in mind?

This is our first experience together on Gozo Dream, so we don’t have very ambitious expectations except for trying to ensure that we don’t have collisions at the start, ensure that we maintian a proper boat speed and tackle the Strait of Messina properly. We have studied the race course and strategies and tactics will be adapted according to the conditions – particularly in Messina where currents are a major challenge.

Are there any particular sections of the racecourse that you’re looking forward to or are concerned about?

The racecourse is so beautiful, so many people have been talking about its beauty but we are defintely looking forward to seeing Stromboli – maybe if we are passing by at night we could see it erupting!  There is also the southern part of the course, which is also beautiful especially in calm seas.

How do you plan to manage crew morale and energy levels during the race, which can be physically and mentally demanding?

First and foremost we are friends, so through our friendship our morale will definitely be high!  We will also have good food on board, with reserves just in case and if weather permits we will also be cooking. Because we know that the race will also be physically demanding we all have been undergoing a personal training regime so that we can be as fit as can be.

What are your expectations for the weather conditions during the race, and how might they impact your performance?

Our boat performs best in mild and moderate conditions, so we are hoping for such conditions.  We have prepared the boat as best can be whilst conforming to regulations but it boils down to the weather conditions that we will be faced with.

Have you set any specific goals or milestones for your first Rolex Middle Sea Race?

This is our first campaign, so our goal is to finish without any injuries to the team and damages to the boat.

What do you anticipate will be the most memorable aspect of this race for you?

The whole journey will be memorable. From the very start of the dream, the preparation for the race and the race itself. 

Are there any veteran racers or sailing mentors who have offered you advice or guidance for this event?

We have been fortunate to have been given advisce and support from people who are very familiar with the race – Will Carbonaro, Godwin Zammit and Adrian Gauci Borda as well as other Gozitans who have raced and shared their own experiences.

We have so much respect towards the Maltese, and all sailors who have raced the 606nm course several times. We keep our expectations as humble as possible with feet on the ground. We augur the RMYC the very best of wishes for another edition of this iconic race.

The 44th Rolex Middle Sea Race Starts on 21st October 2023

The Rolex Middle Sea Race is a 606nm offshore classic. It is often mentioned in the same breath as the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and the Rolex Fastnet Race as one of the ‘must do’ 600 milers. Featuring a circular route, tow active volcanoes and a host of other islands, the course has a uniqu splendour not to be missed.  The Royal Malta Yacht Club hopes to see you in October for the next edition of the Mediterranean’s most Challenging and most Scenic Race
