Secret Service head 'needs to go': senators call for ouster after Trump attack briefing

WASHINGTON − Multiple senators are calling for new leadership at the Secret Service after a Wednesday briefing on the attack against former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania political rally.

"This was a 100% cover-your-ass briefing," Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., posted on X. "Someone has died. The President was almost killed. The head of the Secret Service needs to go."

Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell , R-Ky., said on X that getting new leadership at the Secret Service would be an "important step" toward answers and accountability.

Officials at the FBI and Secret Service gave senators updates Wednesday afternoon on the investigation into the shooting at Trump's campaign stop in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was grazed by a bullet that took off a piece of his right ear, and Pennsylvania firefighter Corey Comperatore was killed as he tried to shield his family from the attack. Two other men were injured.

Senator tells USA TODAY director needs better explanation

Law enforcement officials were notified about suspicious activity around or on the building 20 minutes before shots were fired Saturday and the suspect was killed, according to a senator who attended the briefing.

The length of time between the suspicious activity and authorities taking action deeply troubled the senator, who talked about the briefing on condition of anonymity. It will be difficult for the director of the Secret Service to lead the agency without a better explanation for the delay, the senator said.

Officials have interviewed at least 220 people as part of the investigation and still do not have a motive for the attempted assassination, the senator said. There is no indication that shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks had accomplices or help from a foreign government.

The suspect’s father is a gun enthusiast, the senator said, and had more than 20 weapons in the home.

The briefing was held the same day the Butler Township Manager said in a news release that local police searched for a "suspicious" person near the rally and one officer, who hoisted himself up to the roof, saw Crooks moments before the attack.

"The officer was in a defenseless position and there was no way he could engage the actor while holding onto the roof edge," Township Manager Tom Knights said. The officer let go and fell to the ground, and local police immediately communicated Crooks' location and that he had a weapon, Knights said.

'So much smoke and mirrors'

The drumbeat for political consequences – and calls for heads to roll – began within hours of the Saturday evening rally, where 20-year-old sniper Crooks came within an inch of assassinating the former president.

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, posted on X that "a bunch" of senators raised their hands to ask questions of the Secret Service at the briefing, but the call was cut off after only a few questions.

"So much smoke and mirrors," Lee said in one post . "So little accountability."

Initially, scrutiny about the Secret Service’s failures focused on how the shooter was able to scale a nearby building and gain a direct shot at Trump from about 150 yards away with an AR-style semiautomatic rifle. That’s far less than the 1,000 yard perimeter considered appropriate for such countermeasures, former Secret Service Director Julia Pierson told USA TODAY.

In recent days, calls for Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign have grown as more information has emerged, including that bystanders were trying to alert police and the federal protective agency to the shooter on the roof long before Crooks began shooting.

Cheatle is expected to testify Monday before the House Oversight Committee at the request of its Republican chairman, Rep. James Comer of Kentucky. Comer subpoenaed Cheatle on Wednesday to appear, writing that, "The assassination attempt of the former President and current Republican nominee for president represents a total failure of the agency’s core mission and demands Congressional oversight."

Independent review will look at 'all aspects': Secret Service

Questions also have been raised about how quickly the Secret Service – and local police – reacted to reports of a man acting suspiciously in the crowd.

Barrasso posted that Crooks was identified as suspicious an hour before the attack, although the senator didn't clarify who identified Crooks. He said the Secret Service lost sight of Crooks, who had a range finder and a backpack.

It was also disclosed that local police officers had been stationed inside the building, but none on the roof.

In an interview with ABC News, Cheatle called the shooting "unacceptable" but said she will not resign.

President Joe Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said an “independent review” would be launched into the Secret Service’s operational conduct and on Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general announced he too would be conducting an investigation.

The Secret Service falls under the Department of Homeland Security.

Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service spokesman, told USA TODAY in response to questions about the the Secret Service efforts on Saturday that "there is an independent review panel that's going to look at all aspects of this."

Also Wednesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced a bipartisan task force within the House that will investigate the assassination attempt, saying "we need answers for these shocking security failures."

In a post on X, Sen. Rick Scott , R. Fla., called on FBI Director Christopher Wray, Cheatle, and Mayorkas to hold a daily public press conference to share updates and answer questions about what happened, who is being held accountable, and how to ensure "it never happens again."

Amels reveals first details of LE242 yacht New Secret

Dutch yard  Amels  has opened up about its latest 74 metre superyacht New Secret , which has lived up to her name until now.

Sold in September 2015 by Fraser Yachts , she was delivered in May as the second Amels Limited Editions 242 yacht with all details kept under wraps, but less than a month before her Monaco Yacht Show debut, the veil of secrecy has been partially lifted.

As with hull number one Plvs Vltra , the exterior lines come from the drawing board of renowned British designer  Tim Heywood , but New Secret differs from her sistership in having a completely white superstructure.

Moving inside and her interior styling was created by Winch Design on the owner's request. The yard describes her décor as having “a sophisticated and modern style”.

Rose Damen, commercial director at Amels, said: "The interior’s contrast with the first Amels 242 couldn’t be greater. It really shows the extent of customisation possible through the involvement of the owners. The exterior has a warm and tastefully discreet colour scheme, but there are also some significant customisations such as the extended eight-metre swimming pool on the main deck and the larger helipad on bridge deck.”

Unlike many of the yachts at the Monaco show, New Secret is not offered for sale or charter and on-board visits will be limited to VIPs only.

Built from a steel hull and aluminium superstructure to Lloyd's Class standards,  New Secret  is expected to be used for world cruising and features large exterior aft decks.

The layout of the master suite was of particular importance to the owner, along with the  superyacht spa  area. Five more guest cabins will provide total accommodation for up to 12 guests.

With a total fuel capacity of 155,000 litres, this four-deck yacht will boast a maximum cruising range of 5,000 nautical miles at 12.5 knots.

Other superyacht projects currently under development at the Dutch yard include two further Limited Editions 242 yachts and  the first Amels 188 Limited Editions yacht , which is due for completion next year.

As their name suggests, the Gran Turismo Transatlantic models combine blistering speed with impressive range, making them the perfect choice for seafarers who want to travel the world quickly. Featuring an exterior by Monaco-based firm Dobroserdov Design and naval architecture by Dutch studio Vripack, the GTT 170 will be crafted entirely from aluminum and fitted with a fast-displacement hull. The yacht will also incorporate the latest foiling technology to improve performance and increase comfort, Dynamiq says.

Gran Turismo Transatlantic 170

Powered by twin MAN engines, the GTT 170 has a max speed of 23 knots and a transatlantic range of 5,000 nautical miles. The go-anywhere cruiser is also extremely fuel efficient and complies with the strictest commercial requirements, meaning it is well suited to charter.

Details of the 475 GT interior are yet to be released, but the layout includes six spacious staterooms for up to 12 guests and large cabins for up to nine crew. According to Dynamiq, the centerpiece of the yacht is the two-level beach club, which comes with a 12-person pool and spa.

The laying of the GTT 170’s keel will take place in the fall, with delivery of the yacht scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.

To boost ocean research, some scientists are turning to superyachts

by Laurel Chor, Bloomberg News

To boost ocean research, some scientists are turning to superyachts

For almost two years, Robert Brewin collected data from the bow of a superyacht as it sailed pristine waters from the Caribbean Sea to the Antarctic Ocean.

The Archimedes, a 222-foot "adventure" yacht then owned by the late hedge funder James Simons, boasts a gym, a jacuzzi and an elevator. But between 2018 and 2020, Brewin was concerned only with the boat's Sea-Bird Scientific Solar Tracking Aiming System, installed to measure light reflecting off of the water. A senior lecturer at the UK's University of Exeter, Brewin and his colleagues were analyzing microplankton—microscopic organisms at the base of the marine food chain—by studying the ocean's color. The Sea-Bird's readouts helped them verify satellite imagery.

Brewin's was not your typical superyacht itinerary, but he is one of hundreds of scientists to have used an adventure yacht—also known as expedition or explorer yachts—to conduct research on the ocean. In a paper published in Frontiers in Remote Sensing , Brewin and his co-authors touted the potential of "harnessing superyachts" for science, concluding that "reaching out to wealthy citizen scientists may help fill [research capability] gaps."

It's a view shared—and being pushed—by the Yacht Club of Monaco and the Explorers Club, a New York City-based organization focused on exploration and science (of which, full disclosure, I am a member). In March, the groups co-hosted an environmental symposium that included an awards ceremony for yacht owners who "stand out for their commitment to protecting the marine environment ." The Archimedes won a "Science & Discovery" award.

"If a yacht is operating 365 days a year, rather than having it sit idle it'd be much better for it to contribute a positive return through science and conservation," says Rob McCallum, an Explorers Club fellow and founder of US-based EYOS Expeditions, which runs adventure yacht voyages.

EYOS charters yachts from private owners for its excursions, and is a founding member of Yachts for Science, a four-year-old organization that matches privately owned yachts with scientists who need time at sea. (Other members include yacht builder Arksen, media firm BOAT International, and nonprofits Nekton Foundation and Ocean Family Foundation.) Yachts for Science will enable about $1 million worth of donated yacht time this year, McCallum says, a figure he expects to hit $15 million by 2029.

"There's a personal satisfaction that we are contributing to something that is bigger than us," says Tom Peterson, who co-owns an insurance underwriting company in California and has what he jokingly refers to as a "mini superyacht."

Every year for the past decade, Peterson has donated about 15 to 20 days of time and fuel on the 24-meter Valkyrie to scientists, who he takes out himself as a licensed captain and former scuba dive operator. He often works with the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, and allows researchers to stay aboard for days at a time instead of having to constantly make the 1.5-hour trip to and from shore.

To link up with scientists, Peterson works with the International SeaKeepers Society, a Florida-based nonprofit that engages the yachting community to support ocean conservation and research. "The more we understand things about the ocean in general, the better we all are in the long run," he says.

When "superyacht" and "the environment" appear in the same sentence, it's usually in a different context. In 2019, one study estimated that a single 71-meter superyacht has the same annual carbon footprint as about 200 cars. In 2021, another paper found that superyachts were the single greatest contributor to the carbon footprint of 20 of the world's most prominent billionaires, accounting for 64% of their combined emissions.

"If you really want to respect the environment, you can just go surf," says Grégory Salle, a senior researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research and author of the book Superyachts: Luxury, Tranquility and Ecocide. Salle is open to the idea that superyachts could be used to advance scientific research, but says it's contradictory for anyone to buy a superyacht and claim to be truly concerned about the environment.

McCallum says people who own adventure yachts tend to be younger than your standard superyacht owner, and have a particular interest in remote and pristine places. "They're not the sort of people that are content to just hang out in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean," he says. "Antarctica, the Arctic, the remote Indian Ocean, the remote Pacific Ocean, the Subantarctic islands… that's where you're going to find us delivering our services."

Explorer yachts aren't the only way scientists can reach those destinations, but demand for dedicated research vessels does outstrip available supply. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), arguably the world's greatest collector of oceanographic data, has a fleet of 15 research and survey vessels for the use of its scientists.

Academic researchers can also apply to use the fleet, often at a subsidized rate. But scientists request roughly 15,000 to 20,000 days of boat time every year. In 2019, NOAA was able to fill just 2,300 of them, according to an internal study.

That gap is particularly problematic as the planet warms. Oceans provide services that scientists call "existentially important," producing more than half of the oxygen we breathe and serving as the world's largest carbon sink. They also absorb 30% of our carbon emissions and 90% of the excess heat generated by them.

G. Mark Miller, a retired NOAA Corps officer who was in charge of several of the agency's research vessels, has a different solution in mind when it comes to bolstering ocean research: smaller boats, fit for purpose. Superyachts can cost north of $500 million, he says, "why don't we build a hundred $5 million vessels and flood the ocean science community?"

After leaving NOAA, Miller in 2021 launched Virginia-based Greenwater Marine Sciences Offshore with a vision of building a global fleet of research vessels and offering their use at affordable prices. He says hiring a NOAA boat can cost scientists between $20,000 and $100,000 per day. GMSO plans to charge less than $10,000 a day for most missions. The company says it's close to acquiring its first three vessels.

Miller hopes his business model will help scientists conduct the work they need to—particularly in under-served regions like the Asia-Pacific—without worrying about getting a luxury yacht covered in "muddy worms, plankton goo, dead fish [and] whale snot." He describes yacht owners donating boat time to scientists as "better than nothing," and says it can help get regular people interested in science and exploration.

Christopher Walsh, captain of the Archimedes, says he and his crew love taking part in science initiatives, especially when there's an educational component. "I get a real thrill when we can stream to the classrooms—you can't imagine the enthusiasm the kids display," Walsh says. "That gives me a lot of hope for the future."

The 7 Most Exciting New Superyacht Marinas in the World

Superyacht marinas are more than just a place to park your boat: They offer a premium world of convenience and leisure for owners, charterers and crew alike, in some of the most coveted cruising destinations in the world. Top requirements include large berths for yachts of up to 250 feet, private yacht clubs dreamed up by starchitects, opulent spas, crew facilities, docking, fueling and charging facilities, not to mention a raft of gastronomic eateries, bars, clubs and casinos.

From the only Four Seasons Private Marina in the world to Saudi Arabia's first superyacht destination, here are seven of the latest and greatest superyacht marinas around the world.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Best feature: The only Four Seasons Private Marina in the world

Often compared to popular yachting destinations along the French and Italian Rivieras, the Sea of Cortez was coined "the aquarium of the world" by Jacques Cousteau, and is home to more than 900 different species of fish. The Four Seasons Private Marina, located on Mexico's East Cape of Los Cabos, brings the group's celebrated approach to hospitality to the world of yachting. The marina village includes the East Cape's first nightclub and lounge, and Delphine beach club created in collaboration with Michelin-star chef Ludo Lefebvre and Fabien Cerato.

Berths : Yachts up to 250 feet

Sindalah Island, Saudi Arabia

Best feature: Saudi Arabia's first superyacht destination

Penned by yacht designer Luca Dini, NEOM's Sindalah Island marina provides a scenic gateway to the biodiverse Red Sea. Set to open by the end of 2024, Sindalah pairs world-class cuisine, shopping and wellness with a beach club, yacht club, spa, and hotels  including the first Marriott Autograph Collection and Luxury Collection hotels in Saudi Arabia.

Berths: 86 up to 246 feet

Vilamoura, Portugal

Best feature: The top birdwatching in the Algarve is in Vilamoura's Environmental Park

Situated in the Algarve's exclusive Golden Triangle, Vilamoura is Portugal's largest marina. In January, the Group broke ground on its all-new development, Nova Marina, an extension of its facilities aimed at strengthening Portugal's "fast-growing" superyacht sector. Due to open this year, three pontoons will be equipped with 68 berths specifically designed for large yachts.

Berths : 68 up to 130 feet

Shell Bay, Miami

Best feature: Private championship golf course

Shell Bay, located just north of Miami, is a 150-acre private enclave with a yacht marina, a 60-key boutique resort, 108 private residences, and the first new private golf club in the Miami area in more than 20 years. The waterfront development provides a clear path straight out to the Atlantic for yacht owners and charterers alike, including catamaran snorkel tours and deep-sea fishing excursions. The chef at Shell Bay can even prepare guests' fresh catches cooked to their culinary liking.

Berths : 48 slips

D-Marin, Italy

Best feature: Private beach, spa and amphitheater

Though technically not new marinas, D-Marin's acquisition of Marina degli Aregai and Marina di San Lorenzo in January 2024 signals the demand for more yacht berths in the area. Located along the Riviera dei Fiori, a 36-mile stretch of coastline known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, the two marinas are well placed to capture yachts cruising the nearby coveted stops of Cannes and Monaco, as well as the exclusive coastal towns of Sanremo and San Lorenzo al Mare.

Berths : Marina degli Aregai 961 for yachts up to 164 feet; Marina di San Lorenzo 268 for yachts up to 130 feet.

Elounda Hills, Greece

Best feature: First boutique facility branded by Camper & Nicholsons Marinas

Just a short tender ride from Agios Nikolaos and with views across the sentinel-like island of Spinalonga, Elounda Hills - set to open in 2026 close to the chic fishing village of Elounda - is heralded as the largest private marina in Greece. Located in the sought after Mirabello Bay, on Crete's famously terraced northeast coast, the marina's robust breakwater design provides year-round protection and long-term berthing facilities.

Berths : 50 in the basin, 5 seasonal for yachts up to 295 feet

Habacoa, The Bahamas

Best feature: Yacht Club designed by Zaha Hadid Architects

The Bahamas has long been a favorite cruising ground for yachts, beloved for its clear shallow waters, island-hopping opportunities and proximity to Florida's coast. Habacoa, in South Abaco, is set to become the largest superyacht marina in North America when it opens in late 2027. Alongside a 25,000-square-foot members-only Yacht Club, 40 of the 79 oceanfront and cliffside residences will each have a private boat slip of up to 100 feet.

Berths : 150 up to 200 feet

CHICAGO (WLS) -- While storms hurt some teams in the annual Race to Mackinac , it also helped one team set a new record.

The video in the player above is from a previous report.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Team Maverick made it all the way to Mackinac Island in 22 hours, 24 minutes, and 23 seconds, beating the previous record set 22 years ago by more than an hour.

Three boats in the Race to Mackinac were damaged from Saturday night's storms.

The Chicago Yacht Club said the boats reported dismasting and thankfully no one was injured.

Video was shared with ABC7 by Parade of Boats before storms moved in.

The Race to Mackinac is the world's longest annual freshwater race. The length of the race is 333 miles from Navy Pier to the Round Island Channel, just off of Mackinac Island, Michigan.

More than 250 boats and 2,100 racers from around the world participated in the race. The first Race to Mackinac took place in 1898.

Secret Service Snipers Were Strategically Placed Against Threats at the Trump Rally

In photographs of the Secret Service snipers, they appeared to be using long-range and powerful rifles that likely fire .300 or .338 cartridges, commonly used by well-trained military snipers.

Snipers on top of a building wearing black shirts point rifles into the distance, with people standing in the foreground below them.

By Thomas Gibbons-Neff

  • July 14, 2024

One of the main missions of the Secret Service snipers supporting former President Donald J. Trump’s rally was to perform a counter-sniper mission, as is standard practice. That means they were in position specifically to eliminate the kind of threat posed by the gunman who opened fire on his rally on Saturday.

One of the snipers had a white card attached to the scope of his rifle marked with diagrams and numbers. Such cards are used to detail the specific calculations needed for a sniper’s rifle in relation to various points — in this case, that would likely include the distant buildings on the property of the Butler Farm Show where Mr. Crooks shot from.

According to maps of the site and Google maps, the snipers were within roughly 200 yards of Mr. Crooks, an easy shot for any trained marksman.

A State Department agent tasked with the personal security of high-ranking diplomats said the snipers were in the right place but that the building Mr. Crooks shot from should have been secured given its height and short distance from Mr. Trump. The agent, who wasn’t directly involved in security for the Trump rally on Saturday, spoke on the condition of anonymity since he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Our Coverage of the Trump Rally Shooting

The Investigation : The motives of the 20-year-old gunman who tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump remain a mystery , even after the F.B.I. gained access to his cellphone .

How the Security Broke Down : The Secret Service is facing questions  about why the building from which the gunman fired was left out of the security perimeter. It’s also unclear whether the local forces  used the same building as the shooter.

The Gunman : In interviews, former classmates of the suspect described him as intelligent but solitary , someone who tried to avoid teasing by his classmates, and who grew up in an area where hunting and target shooting  have long been popular pastimes.

Trump Devotees React : Some of Trump’s followers had long viewed him as handpicked by God. The attempted assassination has only increased such quasi-religious rhetoric .

Online Conspiracy Theories : Soon after the shooting, claims that President Biden and his allies ordered the attack on Trump, or that Trump staged the shooting, spread fast across social media .
