Movie references in Roku's screensaver

What are all the movie references in Roku’s Movie Magic screensaver?

Starting with the background layer, specifically with the sunrise in the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge, I see (scribbled in haste, so some may be a little out of order):

The sun, the Golden Gate Bridge, the aurora, all of which are referenced in countless shows.

Then there’s a pirate ship surrounded by tentacles, which is a nod to Pirates of the Caribbean (and probably also to many other pirate and sea monster movies).

Seattle’s Space Needle is next, but I don’t know what that reference is to.

Then we have King Kong fighting off airplanes atop the Empire State Building.

In the water again, we have a boat, the Orca , and a dorsal fin from Jaws .

There’s a big ferris wheel next. The London Eye? Not sure what the reference is.

Next is a UFO above Big Ben. Independence Day , I imagine.

The Death Star from Star Wars floats overhead.

Then we have Mary Poppins umbrella-flying over the Hollywood(land) sign (numerous big-screen portrayals).

The Titanic is in the water (several films).

The Eiffel Tower is next, featured in many shows.

A volcano and a dragon is next, probably a reference to The Lord of the Rings , but taken individually, to any disaster movie about volcanoes ( Dante’s Peak ) or dragons ( NeverEnding Story ).

The Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz is next, surrounded by what look like Egyptian pyramids (many movies).

Then there’s a blimp or dirigible, but I don’t get the reference.

Next is the island from that show with the volleyball ( Cast Away ).

Spider-Man swings through Metropolis. I guess it might also be Tarzan.

A giant robot is next. It looks familiar, but I can’t place it.

Next is a submarine. It doesn’t look like any depiction of Nemo’s Nautilus I’ve seen, so it might be from any of the submarine shows like The Hunt for Red October .

There’s an odd building in the background that kinda reminds me of Batman.

Another odd building with a craft looks like another nod to Star Wars … is that the Millennium Falcon ?

What look like the Devil’s Tower from Close Encounters and the Daily Planet offices from Superman are next.

Another sea monster / robot. Mechagodzilla , I guess.

And last is Alcatraz, the setting for many shows.

Spread throughout are several buildings I don’t recognize from real life or from the movies.

The foreground is more complicated–the buildings aren’t in the same order from one pass to the next. So in no particular order:

There is a lamppost and an umbrella from Singin’ in the Rain .

A barber shop. Don’t know the reference.

A small cafe with outdoor seating. Unknown reference.

A courthouse. Is that the one from Back to the Future . Outside is Doctor Who ’s TARDIS.

A section of electric billboards. I don’t know the reference, if there is one.

What looks like the mansion from The Addams Family .

A movie theater. Could be a reference, might not.

A factory I’m guessing is from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory . What might be Oompa-Loompas are in a loading bay and on the roof.

Outside is another glowy-eyed creature in a garbage can. Probably Oscar the Grouch from the Muppets films. Could just be another Oompa-Loompa. (I think there’s another Oompa-Loompa on one of the other buildings, but I forgot where.)

The Roku headquarters. Probably not a movie reference.

There is a diner that looks familiar, but I can’t quite place it.

There is what appears to be a police station. If it’s not generic, I don’t get the reference.

I think that’s all of the foreground buildings.

The girlfriend says that there’s a window with a lamp in it that references a movie with a lamp, but she can’t recall the movie’s name, and I’ve evidently never seen it. It’s not by Pixar.

Ferris Wheel…maybe from 1941?

The Space Needle? There’s the Elvis movie It Happened at the World’s Fair and Parallax View . And those are the big ones. Various TV movies/shows and disaster movies. Not even the IMDb lists for it show anything really notable.

A ferris wheel is so generic it could be a million movies, from State Fair to Ace in the Hole (a.k.a The Big Circus).

I see the Daily Planet newspaper building. That’s where Clark Kent works. The tall building next to it could be the Stark Industries/Avengers tower. The giant generic 60’s robot could be just about any robot from the era. The Day the Earth Stood Still maybe.

That’s most likely Nashville’s AT&T Building , locally known as the Batman Building. It was built in 1994, so it’s not in most of the movies I can think of that are set there (Altman’s Nashville , The Thing Called Love , The Green Mile ). While researching, I just learned that the first chase scene in The Matrix ( Trinity and Agents on rooftops ) was shot in Nashville; the building pops up a few times in the distance.

The movie theater from that Jim Carrey film about a theater? (googles) The Majestic?

Did the Space needle feature in Sleepless in Seattle?

The building with the cafe in front looks like the building Wreck It Ralph breaks.

To the right of the volcano, is that one of the cities from Lord of the Rings? Minus Trinth or whatever…

There’s eyeballs staring out of a trash can at the bottom at the beginning. I wonder if it’s Oscar the Grouch or something else? Like Pink Panther.

There is a Tardis as well. At least, that is how my wife and daughter interpret it:

The blimp may be a reference to Black Sunday , a 1977 film in which terrorists plan to detonate bombs attached to the Goodyear blimp over the Super Bowl.

It looks much more like the Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz than Minas Tirith .

No, but the Empire State Building did.

And if you’ll look at the top of the courthouse steps on the left, there’s the hoverboard from BttF.

Nice! The only thing I could think of was that one Family Guy episode (which was probably a parody of Black Sunday ).

Ah! So it’s not from one of the Star Wars films. That definitely looks like Stark Tower.

The billboard/jumbotron building has a few interesting ones:

I haven’t come across anyone who has identified the figure with the binoculars, or is that someone from Barbershop?

The history of the Roku screensaver (and how Roku City was born)

The popular Roku screensaver was created in 2008 to prevent screen burn-in on older TV models. The screensaver later evolved into a feature known as the Roku City screensaver, which displayed scenic images from around the world when the Roku device was not in use. It was introduced with little fanfare, but over time, the screensaver became a fan favorite and, dare we say, a cultural icon.

The first version of the Roku City screensaver featured images of various cities, including New York, Paris, and London. In 2012, Roku introduced a new version of the screensaver that featured user-submitted photos of different cities, allowing users to showcase their favorite travel destinations.

In 2015, Roku added a clock and weather widget to the display for additional information while the screensaver was active. Two years later, Roku introduced a new version of the screensaver with 4K Ultra HD images and videos for even more stunning visuals. It looked like this.

In April 2023, Roku released the Roku City Stroll screensaver, featuring a virtual city filled with billboards and even more Hollywood references. The screensaver was designed by former freelance graphic artist Kyle Jones, who now works at Pixar, and includes hidden Easter eggs and references to beloved films throughout the artwork. He said:

“Rⲟku approached me to reinvent their city skyline screensaver. It was a blast to define the style and research the dozens of film and tv references we snuck in (some obvious and some very not-so-obvious). Rⲟku even ran a contest to see who could find the most references, but sadly I was disqualified.”

I’m sure my research isn’t comprehensive, but this listing is the only one I’ve found that notes The Graduate (#36, 2018). This surprises me, since the item is the one of the most iconic movie posters of all time. It’s in the 3rd floor, right hand window, of the building with the sidewalk cafe. To be specific, the leg is Mrs. Robinson’s (Anne Bancroft), and the figure in the background is the graduate (Dustin Hoffman).

Pack Your Bags, We’re Moving to ‘Roku City’

Instead of streaming a new TV show or movie, some Roku users are in it for the screen saver.

If you let a Roku idle long enough, you will eventually be transported to a magenta cityscape beyond time and space. The screen slowly pans across cozy diners, gothic mansions and a sumptuous, moonlit lagoon, all sheathed in a groovy, “Blade Runner”-esque color palette.

A small gallery of vivid Hollywood references are hidden in the skyscrapers that panel the horizon. Look closely, and you’ll find King Kong, Spider-Man and the emerald city of Oz.

It is, in other words, a screen saver. And yet, this particular screen saver has taken on a life of its own. On social media, it’s become known as Roku City, and fans are fantasizing about packing their bags to head there.

“In 2022 I finally want to move to Roku City,” tweeted Zach Silberberg , a digital content producer in New York.

“What if we kissed in Roku City,” asked Tyler O’Day, who works as a social media manager.

“I am a New York City 7 but a Roku City 4,” added the comedian Michelle Gold , in a tweet that garnered over 21,000 likes.

Most of Roku’s more than 60 million users use the service as it was intended, to stream shows, sports and movies directly to their televisions. But in 2022, Roku has also become the unlikely venue for a massive public art experiment.

Due to the size of the company’s customer base, countless homes peer into Roku City every weeknight, opening up a portal to those mysterious, glittering streets. Over time, a dedicated, semi-ironic cult of Roku City adherents propagated on the internet.

“It’s always golden hour in Roku City,” said Cheryl Singletary, a design director at Roku. “It’s really appealing to everyone.”

The screen saver was commissioned to a former freelance graphic artist named Kyle Jones, who now works at Pixar. Ms. Singletary said the company wanted a screen saver that could be filled with advertising for new movies and TV shows. A virtual city, pockmarked with billboards and Hollywood references, seemed to perfectly fit the bill.

Mr. Jones used a pulpy, art-deco cartoon he made for the reopening of the Franklin Theater in southern Nashville as a reference and built a skyline that borrows from all sorts of real-world and silver screen metropolises. (Both the Space Needle and Avengers Tower loom in the background.) The animation hit Roku servers without much fanfare in 2018, but its status slowly grew over the next few years.

By 2022, TikTokkers were imagining what life might be like in the heart of Roku City and Gawker was drafting paeans to its beauty. According to Roku’s internal tracking data, a mention of “Roku City” occurs once every 11 minutes on Twitter. Young people had found their utopia; if only they could crawl inside the television screen.

“I’ve seen it all over the world, as it greets me at Airbnbs, in restaurants and shows up in my social feeds,” said Mr. Jones, in an email mediated through a Roku spokesperson. “It’s definitely the most visible piece of art I’ve done, and is a great reference when people ask what I do. I can usually ask if they have a Roku and if they’ve seen the screen saver.”

There is no great way to track the viral allure of a screen saver, but Damon Van Deusen, Roku’s vice president of brand strategy, notes that interest in Roku City — known internally as “City Scroll: Movie Magic” — swelled during the first wave of the pandemic when many people were planted at home with their TVs on for days at a time. There, they saw this shimmering metropolis idling onscreen, a parallel reality where the bars were open, the restaurants were bustling and the night was young.

“I’m enamored by what you don’t see in Roku City. The design of it is so enticing. There are these silhouettes and all these shadows. And you think, ‘I wonder what else is there,’” Mr. Van Deusen said. “You to want to know more. Like, ‘What’s rent like in Roku City?’”

Ms. Gold, whose Roku City tweet went viral, believes that the screen saver contains an enviable sense of urbane cool. She notes how, in the distance, you can see giant robots and toothy dragons wreaking havoc. And yet, the citizenry of the metropolis still seems to thrive. “These people seem like they can handle anything,” Ms. Gold said.

Roku isn’t the only streaming platform with a screen saver. Consider the bouncing DVD logo of the mid-2000s, or the drone-footage panoramas of Apple TV. But generally speaking, when a TV begins to hibernate, it is meant to be ignored. In that sense, Roku pushes against those design philosophies. Even when there isn’t a movie on-screen, you can still spend hours getting lost in Roku City.

“I was talking with another member of the team who shared that it might even be the most viewed piece of art ever since it is just on loop constantly in millions of households,” Mr. Jones said. “I can’t imagine that is true, but it’s still pretty wild to think about.”

Seasons are changing in Roku City. As the summer months left the calendar, a wash of auburn trees began to streak across a new district and a fresh set of spooky cafes — and the requisite filmic easter eggs — filled the city block. Ms. Singletary said the design team has used the opportunity to show off “the less urban areas, the parks, and things like that” of their fantasy metropolis. It’s part of a larger campaign within Roku’s headquarters; the city is only getting bigger.

“I think there’s this whole virtual space we can explore. But as we get into that more and more, it’d be fun to do physical spaces,” Mr. Van Deusen said. He imagines a Comic Con-like exhibition where Roku City fans could break bread with Roku City residents — a screen saver expanding into its very own Disneyland.

That dream might be especially magnetic right now, particularly among young people, as inflation continues to soar. Food prices are up, same with gasoline , housing leases and electric bills . But a trip to Roku City is always free of charge. All you need to do is turn on the television and set the remote down.

“A second home is hard to come by as a 20-something in New York City,” said Mr. O’Day, one of the people who heralded the screen saver on Twitter. “Roku City is my own little slice of paradise.”

The Easter-Egg-Filled ‘Roku City’ Screen Saver Has Its Own Fandom

When Roku streaming device users let their device idle for too long without making a content selection, they’ll find themselves staring at “Roku City”—a screen saver filled with pop culture homages to everything from the Titanic to King Kong . It’s a Where’s Waldo? for the streaming era, and it’s inspiring a new kind of fandom.

According to The New York Times , more than 60 million Roku users are exposed to the graphic, which was originally intended to prevent static images from causing burn-in on certain televisions. (More common in the era of plasma TVs, burn-in is less of a concern on current LED or OLED models.) The design was the work of freelance artist Kyle Jones, now with Pixar, who used an art deco style to fashion a cityscape with nods to cultural touchstones. Avengers Tower from the Marvel Cinematic Universe can be seen; so can the shark from Jaws , Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz , Spider-Man, the Daily Planet globe, and much more.

As James Cameron’s Avatar inspired fans to imagine life in Pandora, Roku City devotees pen tributes to their urban utopia, often musing what life (or rent) must be like in a city where a bursting volcano and a giant robot seem to co-exist with a bowling alley and burger joint.

“My parents met in Roku City, been married 30 years at this point,” one person Tweeted .

“I would actually consider the Metaverse if it means living in Roku City,” said another.

Though it debuted in 2018, interest seemed to spike during the pandemic, when cities were closed but Roku City appeared to be livelier than ever.

“I was talking with another member of the team who shared that it might even be the most viewed piece of art ever since it is just on loop constantly in millions of households,” Jones told the Times . “I can’t imagine that is true, but it’s still pretty wild to think about.”

How to change the screensaver on roku.

Give your blank Roku screen some love.

When you're not watching TV, it becomes a boring black rectangle in your living room. A screensaver can make it more interesting. Roku devices have some great screensaver options to choose from. We'll show you how to change it.

Roku devices come with a few screensavers pre-installed---including the 3D aquarium seen above---but there are also some you can install yourself. If you want to see the screensaver all the time, you can choose to have the TV never turn off. We'll cover that too.

First, navigate to "Settings" in the left sidebar on the Roku home screen.

Next, go down to "Theme."

Select "Screensavers" from the Theme menu.

Select the screensaver you'd like to use.

If you don't already have the screensaver installed, you'll first need to select "Get Screensaver."

After it installs---or if it was already installed---you can select "Set as Screensaver."

The screensaver will now be applied. By default, the Roku will turn off the screen after 20 minutes of inactivity. If you would like to always see the screensaver and turn the TV off manually, we can disable that setting.

First, go to "Settings" in the left sidebar on the home screen.

Select "Power."

Select "Auto Power Savings" and uncheck the box for "After 20 minutes of no interaction."

The Roku will now stay on indefinitely until you manually turn it off. Keep in mind that this will use more energy.

That's all there is to changing up the screensaver on your Roku! It's a nice way to add a little personality to your TV when it's not being used. If you have some non-Roku devices in your home, you can also change the screensaver on platforms like GOogle TV .

How to Change Your Screensaver on Roku

However, using a work of art is especially trendy nowadays, especially owing to the whopping resolution capabilities of most modern TVs. Just pick a work of art and have it displayed on your TV when it’s not in use. Here’s how to do this.

Things to Take into Account

Even though this option is called “screensaver” on most modern TVs, it really does nothing remotely related to saving your screen . The point behind old screensavers, back in the day, was that the pixels would get damaged if they were being left as a still image for extended periods of time. A screensaver would then turn on automatically, “shaking things up a bit,” and thus helping the computer screen last longer.

With modern TVs, however, over-encumbered pixels are truly a thing of the past. TVs are designed in such way to have no issues displaying any kind of content, no matter how long.

So, what’s the screensaver for? Well, purely for aesthetics and decoration. Not only will it not protect your screen, but it will keep it active for longer time periods, using up your TV’s life. Oh, and wasting power.

However, having a piece of art displayed in HQ on your large flat-screen TV sure is awesome, right? Oh, yes.

Selecting the Images

Although artwork is certainly a great idea, your screensaver doesn’t have to be a piece of art. It can be a gorgeous Hubble shot of space, an aerial view of your favorite city, a movie poster, even your own selfie or a family photo.

Bear in mind that non-professional photos might not look very good when stretched across your large TV screen. If you’ve taken a photo with your front camera, it definitely won’t fit the role of a beautiful screensaver on your large flat-screen TV.

That being said, it is entirely up to you, at the end of the day. Art is very subjective and you can honestly put whatever you’d like to as the screensaver.

But, how do you set up a photo from your streaming device as the TV screensaver? Well, depends on your device. For instance, Roku TVs can use images from your phone or from Google Photos. Fire TVs will resort to Amazon Photos. Apple TVs will, naturally, use iCloud for screensaver storage and application, while Chromecast users will have to rely on the material saved on Google Photos.

Setting a Screensaver with Roku

If you have a Roku Hisense TV, or any other Roku-equipped TV, you are in luck. As mentioned before, there are two options with Roku TVs here: either load up the photos from your phone or install the Photo View channel (Google Photos).

If you want to load up the screensaver from your phone, open the Roku smartphone app, navigate to Photos+ , and select the screensaver you want to use. The image should appear on the screen straight away.

Alternatively, if you’ve installed the Photo View channel, open it and sign in using your Google credentials. From here, you can choose the photos and adjust more screensaver settings. It’s fairly simple and straightforward, so you’ll get by on your own.

Setting a Screensaver with Fire TV

Amazon Fire TV uses Amazon Photos exclusively. However, if you want the stock photos (they really are beautiful) to be displayed on your TV, just go to Settings , Display & Sounds , Screensaver , turn on this option, and accept all defaults.

Of course, you can use Amazon Photos by downloading the dedicated smartphone or tablet app and signing in to your Amazon account. Once you’ve equipped your Amazon Photos cloud with photos, go back to the Screensaver settings on your Fire TV and change the source.

Setting a Screensaver with Apple TV

Apple is at the top of the game here, as the device itself supports screensavers by default. Oh, and the screensavers are automatically created from your iCloud photos.

If you have photos on iCloud, turn on iCloud integration on your Apple TV, and simply select Yes when prompted to turn on Photo Stream. If you want a specific album to be used for your screensavers, go to Photos on your TV, then iCloud , and, finally, choose an album that you want to use.

Setting a Screensaver with Chromecast

Setting the screensaver on Chromecast devices is very easy. Simply open the Google Home app, find the Chromecast device in question, tap it, select Ambient mode , tap Art Gallery , and you’ve successfully turned the default screensaver on. If you want to use specific photos, however, go to Google Photos and select the desired Google Photos Album from Ambient settings .

Smart TVs and Screensavers

Regardless of what smart TV device you’re using, you should be able to easily set up your desired screensaver. Whether you want the beautiful stock images to shuffle, or have something more specific in mind, the methods explained above have you covered.
