St Francis Yacht Club Watching Blue Angels on a corp boat Fri 10/8/21 Would I have wanted to be a member of this private club? Sure, what's not to like one might ask? Would I have wanted to have my boat parked at San Francis Yacht Basin? Would I have wanted to own a boat in the first place? Here's the scoop of my personal experience. Stepping inside was a mistake. Yes, they have lunches in the Main Dining Room & Clippership Wed, Thur, Fri 12-2:30 pm and 11-2:30 pm on the weekends. Dinners served on the above mentioned days 5-7:30 pm. Grill Room Bar & Trophy Deck will offer you beverage service 5-9 pm Mon & Tue, 5 pm -12 am on Wed, Thur, Fri and beginning at noon till 12 am on the weekends. There was a special buffet lunch in the Main Dining room on the day of my visit, Friday Oct 8. The entrance hall is an expansive space with nicely appointed marine details, high-ceilinged, with gorgeous view of the body of water. A spiral staircase leading upstairs to Main Dining Room displays memorabilia along the walls. There are three intricate model boats on display behind glass covered case. That's where my experience had ended, abruptly. That's as far as I was able to advance. In search for the boat I've been invited to visit, you would think staff would direct you or at least offer help to locate someone who could. Wrong! You'd be irked and embarrassed instead, and asked to leave. After reading reviews I'm not surprised to have been treated this way, apparently Club members are not treated much better. Hospitality? What's that? Arrogance seems to be flying in the air. Polite inquiry here commands back a snooty disdain. Bloated sense of self importance will suffocate you instantly. By the way. I'm wearing Dolce jeans, Italian designer parka, Chrome Hearts eyewear, I'm presentable guy in collectors closing (although I hear they enforce a dress code of no jeans and require men to wear a jacket). Cheers? Not. Review #648 posted with 8 pictures on October 21, 2021 Invitation: San Francis Yacht Basin Marina & Broderick San Francisco St Francis Yacht Club Friday, October 8 at 1:00 PM to Saturday, October 9 at 4:00 PM Please drop by and join us for a casual open house on [boat name], located at the St Francis Yacht Club, and enjoy front row seats to the Blue Angels (they fly Friday and Saturday at 3pm; the boat will be open from noon to 6pm each day). Drinks and light snacks will be provided. Now I understand What you tried to say to me And how you suffered for your sanity And how you tried to set them free They would not listen, they did not know how Perhaps they'll listen now For they could not love you But still your love was true And when no hope was left in sight On that starry, starry night St Francis Yacht Club. I was an invited guest at this yacht club, and a seemingly racist member screamed at me. I was then kicked out. I attended a private event at St. Francis Yacht Club as an invited guest--my friend's company threw a small party to celebrate his move to San Francisco. After the event, we went to the bar area with some members of the yacht club and some non-members. After most people had left and I was having a quiet conversation with two friends at a table, and a woman from the bar came over, got in my face, and started yelling at me. She said that I was a socialist who supports Palestine and she knows that I'm not a member. My table of 3 people included the only 2 nonwhite people at the bar at this time, and we were talking about Burning Man and our summer plans. There was no mention of Palestine or socialism (although it would be our right to have a private conversation about these things if we wished to). The woman said she was from Ukraine and continued screaming at me about Palestine. I assume she targeted me because I'm a young-looking woman of color and fit the demographic of those who support Palestine. My partner, who is white, put out his arm to keep her back from me (she was really in my face) and then she started yelling at him for touching her. After a few minutes of her nonsensical screaming, the bartender came and tapped me on the shoulder. To my surprise, he asked me to leave the club! I asked why I was being asked to leave and he said that I had upset a member. The security guard then escorted us out, although he did privately tell me he thought her behavior was inappropriate, but he had to do whatever the members wanted. I am absolutely disgusted at this racist institution that allows its members to be dictators and use the staff to remove people they don't want in their club. I at no point raised my voice or used any offensive language, and I was still escorted out by security and this belligerent, screaming woman was allowed to remain at the club.

I had an event there yesterday.. Pro: It was a perfect day for it and it was a great sight looking out the window capturing all the scenes of sailboats and the Golden Gate Bridge. I do like the layout of the room. Con: At the end of the event, some of the workers were taking food and told my mom we couldn't pack the food (my aunt in law and cousin in law bought) to take home! What in the world is this?! We pay you for the event and the delicious food but can't take it home?! Only to find out from another worker had told us you take it to the break room to eat!!!!!!!! This is unheard of and unacceptable! Do you really think that this is good business?! To me, that's really absurd! I've never NEVER had that happen to me! I hope you all understand that you are here to not to only throw events here but to treat your guests kindly. I don't understand why you didn't let us take food when (like I said above), you take it to the break room to only eat it after we gave you the money to be here and enjoy this day! It was the first and the last time I'm coming here since this made me feel less than a guest. I'm not coming here to be all petty but seriously, do better on this.

Over the years I have had many memorable meals and enjoyed exceptional events at this beautiful club. However, an incident on Friday night was beyond the pale. Three of us (2 Asian women and a Caucasian man) were chatting and laughing next to the dessert table at the seafood buffet. I was in a blue cocktail dress, our host in a dinner jacket, and our friend was dressed in black. A member, Mrs. Miller, barged in on our conversation glaring us, shouting "What is this, a cocktail party? My husband still waiting for his coffee!" The three of us were shocked and as our jaws hit the ground, she continued, "Don't you work here?!" I managed to blurt out "No!" Mrs. Miller stormed off without her coffee. A bit later, staff who witnessed this confrontation apologized to us and said this was normal for this particular member. I hope someone reports her to the club and she gets called out on her racism. Even if I had been staff, abusing the people who work there cannot be acceptable. She ruined an otherwise wonderful evening.

Our group dined here for lunch today, and it was great. The views were spectacular and the food was very good.

What a charming event space! Came here for an event during the nighttime and the location was absolutely amazing. The Yacht club hosts absolutely gorgeous views of the Golden Gate and the rolling mountains of San Francisco. Their private beach is also very secluded and quiet. Not sure if its considered private property but would definitely recommend checking it out. The food was also pretty good. The brownies and the blondies were both amazing, not too sweet with walnuts on the inside. I would stray from the chocolate chip cookies though, seems like a store bought item rather than a homemade one. The other little pastries were delicious, especially the steak crostini. Yum! Definitely recommend hosting events here for the amazing views and the good food. Also the venue is just absolutely spectacular. No complaints here!

What a view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marina waters! I was in awe when looking about and it was near sunset so the natural colors were wonderful. In terms of the Yacht Club, nice dining area and upstairs open bar lounge. Live music was happening. Cash only at the bar. It was a classic kind of vibe attending an event here. More like behave and be proper than get rowdy! It was fun.

This is probably one of the few two star reviews you're going to see. The problem with the restaurant isn't the food all the food is completely over priced they ding you with all kinds of different fees. So you get a couple of drinks and a couple of entrées and you pay over 100 bucks. That's not the problem. The problem is we are members of yacht club and they kept us there for 45 minutes because they had to call over to see if we were actually members of the yacht club. Even with the membership cards. They embarrassed us, the snippy little millennial in front was nasty and rude. I was even more embarrassed because it was my sailor's birthday and he was very embarrassed as well. You cant judge a book by its cover and I'm sorry we are not wearing Gucci and Louis Vuitton but we are the members of the same as everybody else's The only reason it's getting to starters for the view which is probably the most beautiful in the bay.

I've been here a few times now, always for an event, celebration, or just simply yachting our with friends. We always had a great time. Love the wall of fame here, decorated in photos of rich history of this club through out the hall ways and lounge. The ocean view, on a nice day, take you to the San Francisco Bay and under near the famous Golden Gate Bridge, you can't get any better than that. The service is good, the food is fair, and the vibe is not as snobby as it could be. Parking can be a challenged on special days/events so plan it ahead accordingly. And always bring layers when you are here even on a sunny day! This part of town is always 8-10 degree cooler than SoMa or the Embarcadero/The SF Giants Ball Park.

St. Francis Yacht Club

The history of st. francis yacht club  , becoming st. francis, a yacht club in the city, the club buys an island.

With San Francisco summers often foggy, windy and cold, StFYC members started a search for a warmer option in the mid-1950s. In 1958, that destination was secured when a small group of members pooled personal funds and purchased a 21-acre, overgrown island in the Delta for $10,750. Our little slice of heaven on the San Joaquin River, Tinsley Island, was founded. A plaque commemorating those generous visionaries may be found in the lighthouse on Tinsley Island.

WE STARTED SOMETHING BIG

In 1964, St. Francis Yacht Club welcomed eight yachts to the inaugural St. Francis Perpetual Trophy Regatta. Four boats came from Southern California:  Odyssey ,  Kialoa ,  Audacious  and  Kamalii ; and four from Northern California:  Athene ,  Baruna ,  Ocean Queen IV  and  Santana . The regatta was soon nicknamed the “Big Boat Series.” Since then, the Rolex Big Boat Series has earned a reputation as the West Coast’s premier regatta. St. Francis Yacht Club is proud to host hundreds of sailors each September, drawing great sailors from all the great ports of the blue planet to race in our famous front yard.

93 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE...AND COUNTING

People and boats make the sport of yacht racing, and for 90+ years, through members, guests, pros, and generations of kids insisting, "I'm not cold; let me try it again," we've known the best of both.

THE MISSION OF THE ST. FRANCIS YACHT CLUB IS TO SERVE AS THE INSPIRATIONAL CENTER OF BOATING ACTIVITIES REGIONALLY AND A LEADER OF YACHTING INTERNATIONALLY. WE HONOR CAMARADERIE, SPORTSMANSHIP, TRADITION AND THE MARITIME HERITAGE OF SAN FRANCISCO IN A PREMIER YACHTING ENVIRONMENT.

Our App enables the sailors to have the boat´s performance tracked live and to be able to review the performance later on. The app can be complemented by a tracking device that you can have on your boat.

Becoming st. francis.

St. Francis Yacht Club was founded in 1927 by a group of 21 San Francisco yachtsmen with a vision of a club in the City. It was an offshoot of the San Francisco Yacht Club, which was founded in 1856 and had its facility in Sausalito, across the Bay. That facility burned to the ground in the mid-twenties and a fierce debate raged after the fire between those who lived in Marin County and those who lived in San Francisco. The city-dwellers wanted to relocate to San Francisco—not surprising given that this was before the Golden Gate Bridge, so SF members had to travel by water to their club. Members from Marin found a suitable location in Belvedere against the wishes of their SF membership and pulled some fast and furious moves to secure the right number of votes to make it happen. This so offended the SF members that they chose to leave San Francisco Yacht Club and form their own club: the St. Francis Yacht Club.

Today, there is great camaraderie between the two clubs and many members belong to both.

First Wing Race Launches at St. Francis Yacht Club

St. Francis Yacht Club

July 7, 2021

st francis bay yacht club

Photos: Bryan McDonald

“What a great start to a new era of racing at StFYC,” said St. Francis Yacht Club Senior Sailing Director Adam Corpuz-Lahne after 33 wing foilers completed a modified slalom course on Friday, June 4, 2021. The race was part of a new monthly Wind Slalom Series open to windsurfers and “wingers”, an up and-coming sport that’s exploded in popularity over the past year.

“Winging” combines the foiling boards that developed for kiteboarding with handheld inflatable wings to offer a nimble, easy ride with less gear and lots of speed.

The first in a summer series of events drew both young and old competitors, as well as those new to watersports competition and veteran boarders of all types.

“We had double the number of anticipated wing racers, and they all seemed to be having a great time out there,” said Corpuz-Lahne, who said conditions were typical of San Francisco Bay in the summer—25-30 knots of westerly winds. “From the water level it was visually spectacular. The wings present something the kites don’t, which is rider proximity to the sail.”

Event organizer Seth Besse said it’s unclear if this is the first wing race hosted by a yacht club—he was aware of a small slalom race on Maui and another in Italy—but this one drew a much larger crowd, which is likely to grow as word gets out.

st francis bay yacht club

Following the event, San Francisco Bay magazine Latitude 38 wrote :

Seeing the St. Francis Yacht Club at the forefront of wing racing is no surprise. StFYC has been a leader in supporting “up-and-coming” water sports for decades. StFYC hosted a windsurfing series since before records became digital. The Club was also the first to establish a kitesurf race series in the USA, according to a June 24 article in the Marin Independent Journal which read:

“On selected Thursday evenings, as many as 25 to 40 kiteboarders congregate…to do battle over established courses. The St. Francis series is believed to be the first such program in the United States.”

St. Francis Yacht Club was also on the cutting edge of hydrofoil development since its inception, the evolution of which and combination with kitesurf racing has now become a full Olympic 2024 sailing event.

Digging through the StFYC archives I came across the results of the first (of many) Thursday Night Kite Series. The first race was held on May 12, 2005 with just a handful of competitors, each taking a turn being Race Committee on a different night throughout the series. My jaw dropped to see there was “established” racing back that far, but it dropped again seeing some of the competitor’s names.

Four of them, including that first May 12th night’s race winner Geoff Headington, are now “wingers” in the new StFYC Wing Race Series, which had over 30 competitors on the first night…and is run by a formal race committee.

StFYC truly is a club of visionaries in both sport and leadership. I’m proud to be a member of a Club that supports wild ideas and big dreams, the future of which sometimes turn into Olympic events.

A Firsthand Account from First-time Winger Noelle Phillips Brewin, ICOYC Club Correspondent:

I recently tried wing foiling for the first time at Sherman Island in California and it is definitely harder than it looks, but my guess is the sport will be huge!

It is way less intimidating and a lot more approachable than kiting. It is still fairly expensive to buy the foil and a wing, but there is less gear needed and it seems like a lot of recreational “wingers” get by with only one wing size and a stand up paddleboard to start out.

I attempted using my sister’s wing and foil setup and ended up with a lot of shin bruises from hitting the foil repeatedly when trying to get up; the few times I got going it was really fun! I think most parents will put their kids on wings before letting them kite and I think older kiters will likely “retire” to winging. Adults without any previous kiting experience would probably also be comfortable trying it out. My main goal for wanting to wing is so I can leave one on our sailboat and wing directly from the boat, which I’m too scared to do kiteboarding for fear I get tangled up in the mast!

In my opinion, at the beginner level, winging is a more exhilarating version of stand up paddleboarding, and that has taken off in popularity, so I don’t see why winging wouldn’t.

San Francisco’s annual Lighted Boat Parade returns this Friday, December 15th, at 6 pm. This beloved holiday event hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club dates back to 1994 and is a welcome sight along the waterfront every year.

A procession of about 2 dozen illuminated boats will set sail from Pier 39 around 6 pm and cruise along the waterfront to Crissy Field. Once they reach Crissy Field, the lighted boats will turn around and sail back to Pier 39. The lighted boat parade is a beloved tradition and great for enjoying holiday lights in a uniquely coastal way. The procession goes leisurely, taking about 2-3 hours. You can bring a picnic and watch the glowing boats for the evening. Just don’t forget some layers and a blanket to keep you warm.

The best viewing is along Pier 39, the parking lot east of St. Francis Yacht Club, the Marina Green, Crissy Field, and Aquatic Park. If you have a boat, then be sure to grab a front-row seat right on the water. The St. Francis Yacht Club is members-only, so the public has no viewing opportunities inside the yacht house.

If you miss the procession on the SF Bay, consider catching the San Mateo Holiday Lighted Boat Parade on Saturday, December 16, at 5 pm. The best viewing is along the berm in front of the Coyote Point Yacht Club. You can also check out Winter Fest in Sausalito, which hosts a boat parade on December 9 starting at 6 pm .\

About the St. Francis Yacht Club

The St. Francis Yacht Club began in 1927 as an offshoot of the San Francisco Yacht Club, which dates back to 1869 . In the 1920s, a debate emerged between its members about relocating the club to San Francisco from its original location in Sausalito. After all, this was pre-Golden Gate Bridge, and it was a long commute across the Bay.

The Marin County club members resisted the move, and the club eventually split into two groups : The San Francisco members started the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, and the Marin County members relocated the San Francisco Yacht Club to Belvedere. These days, the two clubs have a great relationship, and many members belong to both.

The St. Francis Yacht Club hosts the Rolex Big Boat Series every year, which is known as a premier regatta on the West Coast. The event happens every September, bringing hundreds of sailors to San Francisco.

Event Recap: US Open Sailing Series – 2024 Long Beach Olympic Classes Regatta

The 2024 US Open Sailing Series for the Long Beach Olympic Classes Regatta at Los Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach, California, delivered an exhilarating week of competitive racing, featuring a diverse fleet of sailors across multiple classes. This event, an integral part of the sailing calendar, showcased both seasoned competitors and promising young talents.

The event brought in a combination of Olympic, Invitational, and Youth World Classes for competitive racing in Southern California waters.

The Long Beach venue, renowned for its challenging conditions and scenic backdrop, provided the perfect setting for this prestigious regatta. As the sailing community looks ahead, it’s worth noting that Long Beach will serve as the sailing venue for the 2028 Summer Olympics, promising more thrilling races and showcasing the world’s best sailors.

“Extremely competitive classes showed up to race in stellar Long Beach conditions providing 12-17 knots on Friday and Saturday and 8-10 knots on Sunday,” shared Regatta Co-Chair and Long Beach Yacht Club Vice Commodore, Lisa Meier. “Coaches and competitors were at the highest levels. One just had to look at the ILCA 6 course to world class competition to see Charlotte Rose/USA, Lillian Meyers/USA, and Wiktoria Golebiowska/Poland battling it out in world class conditions!  All classes provided stiff competition with lead changes throughout the regatta.”

Class winners:

  • 29er: Kevin Cason + Holland Vierling, San Diego Yacht Club
  • 470: Kyra Phelan + Sawyer Bastian, St. Francis Yacht Club
  • Finn: Rob Coutts, Mission Bay Yacht Club
  • Formula Kite: Adam Keaton, Fastmetrics
  • ILCA 4: Nate Colbert, Mission Bay Yacht Club
  • ILCA 6: Wiktoria Golebiowska, Poland*
  • ILCA 7: Hamilton Barclay, Barclay Sailing

Five of the seven class winners hail from California, representing the West Coast at the event.

“The Long Beach Olympic Classes Regatta is designed to run during the Olympic window,” noted Mike Van Dyke, Chair of US Sailing Board of Directors and Staff Commodore of both Long Beach Yacht Club and Los Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. “It’s a preview of the day of how the sailing will look for LA28. Next year, we expand the number of classes as we welcome back the 49er, FX, Nacra 17, and iQFOiL. The Format expands to 9 days with each class racing 4 days. We’re partners with the City of Long Beach, welcoming and hosting visiting athletes as they move from Paris to Long Beach.”

The 2024 US Open Sailing Series not only highlighted the current elite sailors but also served as a critical platform for emerging talents to make their mark. The event reaffirmed the vibrant and competitive spirit of sailing, setting a high bar for future regattas.

After the fire: St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club focused on revitalizing this coming summer

P ANAMA CITY — In November, the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club building on Bunkers Cove Road was destroyed in a fire. Ever since then, questions have circulated around the community: How did the fire start? Would the Yacht Club rebuild?

The Yacht Club was up and operational for business within weeks of the fire. The Yacht Club is still taking in new members, as well. Members have joined the club even after the fire.

”The Yacht Club is in better shape than people would have imagined,” said Michael Wynn, 2024 commodore. “The staff members that we have are family to us. We believe and give to them and they give back to us.”

Wynn explained that one club member had this to say after the fire: “The clubhouse was just a building; the Yacht Club is about the people.”

The Yacht Club has discussed expanding its sailing center to provide greater resources for the community. The club expects the plans and renderings for the new club facility will be unveiled this summer.

Some of the staff members have left the club since the incident and others have stayed.

“Our staff is smaller now since the fire,” said Wynn. “We have less services being offered at the moment, but many staffers who left the club for other jobs have offered to come back once the club becomes (fully) operational again.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown. There have been different ideas and theories on how the fire started, but there has not been a definitive answer. But there was no foul play, Wynn emphasized.

”Right now, we don’t have a final number on what it’s going to cost to rebuild,” said Wynn. “We have architects and plans on rebuilding. We have members of the community who are donating services to help cut the cost (of our rebuild).”

More information about the club will be released closer to the clubhouse reopening. Wynn said the rebuild will both honor the club's history and heritage and also add modern touches.

Wynn said the club's experience dealing with insurance after the fire has been good and the matter soon will be resolved. The experience was much better than the ones many people had after Hurricane Michael, he noted.

Wynn also is humbled and gratified by the outpouring of support and dedication from his fellow club leaders and all club members. He knew his one-year term as commodore, which began in January, would be full of challenges. But the club has rallied because the tradition and legacy mean so much.

"People care so deeply," he said.
