Details and photographs are normally based on one specific yacht, but could be a compilation. No reliance should be placed on other yachts of the same class being identical.  Where common variations exist, we have endeavoured to indicate this in these archive details.

The Twister design can be found reborn in two larger yachts, the Rustler 31 and Rustler 36

The photos here are of several different yachts - including an all-grp version, which was sadly lost in 2002, after breaking her moorings in a storm, an uphams composite yacht, and a home-built composite version (with the very nicely finished all-varnished cockpit).

Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the Twister 28

The designed ratios for a sailboat provide information about how the boat will behave in certain conditions.

  • Sail Area/Displacement Ratio (SA/DR) : The Twister 28 has a SA/DR of 12.1. This falls into the moderate cruising range and means that the Twister 28 is not designed for high-speed performance but rather the slower speeds of cruising.
  • Ballast/Displacement Ratio (B/DR) : A B/DR of 46.4 indicates that the Twister 28 has a good righting moment and thus exhibits solid stability. The heavier ballast means the boat can carry more sail, deal with heavier wind, but will also give up some speed in light wind and performance situations.
  • Displacement/Length Ratio (D/LR) : A D/LR of 448 is reflective of a heavy displacement boat which, coupled with the low SA/DR, reiterates that the Twister 28 is designed for slow, comfortable cruising rather than speed.
  • Comfort Ratio (CR) : The CR of 40.5 is in the moderate range for the comfort ratio, a higher number is indicative of a boat likely to provide a smoother ride in rougher conditions and the Twister 28 falls into this category.
  • Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) : A CSF of 1.5 is lower than the 2.0 maximum recommended for offshore sailing, which implies good capsize resistance. The Twister 28 is less prone to capsize in bad weather, which makes it a very safe choice for offshore cruising.

Based on these ratios, the Twister 28 will perform well in rougher weather conditions and offshore cruising. Its strength lies in its comfort and stability at sea, not in speed or light wind performance.

The Builders

The Twister 28 was the brainchild of British yacht designer Kim Holman. Originally drawn in the 1960s, the early builds were crafted by Uphams of Brixham , a traditional and versatile wooden boat builder. They gained their reputation through the construction of wooden boats of all kinds, from commercial fishing vessels to racing yachts.

Later, the Twister 28 was also produced by several other boat builders, the most notable being the Tyler Boat Company , who made a fiberglass version alongside the original wooden incarnation. Both builders were credited for the boat’s success due to their high-quality construction methods.

However, Uphams of Brixham no longer exists as it closed its doors in the 1980s. The Tyler Boat Company also ceased operations, although the molds of the Twister 28 were believed to have been passed on to other builders for a period of time.

Despite the original builders no longer being in operation, the Twister 28's strong build and timeless design led to their continued popularity even decades after they were first built. Twister 28 boats are often found in used boat markets and are sought after due to their durability and performance.

The Twister 28: An Overview

The Twister 28 is a classic, long-keeled cruiser, originally designed by Kim Holman in the 1960s. It has a reputation for outstanding sea-keeping abilities, largely due to its traditional design featuring deep and narrow hull, solid construction, and heavy displacement.

The Twister 28 measures 28 feet in length, with a beam of just over 8 feet, and a draught of approximately 5 feet. It’s made predominantly of fibreglass although early versions were made from wood.

Affectionately described as "overbuilt" , the structural robustness of the Twister 28 makes it an ideal choice for those planning extended voyages or ocean crossings. Despite its sturdy build, it is easily handled by a small crew or even single-handed.

This boat features a spacious cockpit and comfortable accommodation below deck, typically comprising of a forward cabin with two berths, a main cabin with additional berths, a small galley, and a head.

One iconic characteristic of the Twister 28 is its classic lines and distinctive shape, making it easily recognisable in any anchorage.

The Twister 28 is a highly sought-after sailing yacht for those seeking a mix of adventure, reliability, and classic elegance. Despite its age, it continues to hold its value well and is often coveted by sailing traditionalists.

I wrote this article using GPT-4, OpenAI’s large-scale language-generation model, as a research assistant to develop source material. I wrote the final draft in its entirety and believe it to be accurate to the best of my knowledge.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

First available in wood, then with FG hulls with wood coachroof and deck. By 1970, an all glass version was available. It is thought that the glass boats were molded by Tyler Boat Co. Ltd. and finished and fitted out by other yards.

. I have heard they are quite and fast, and point quite well too for a full keeled yacht. They also look great.

Anyone able to tell me more about its strengths and weaknesses?

I do know about some of them having wooden coach house and possible leakage with age. But is there anything else to watch out for, seeing the are quite old?

One of the things that worries me is that the stepped base for the is made up of the two posts on each side of the forward door to the V berth. In other words, the is not stepped on a post directly underneath that itself is positioned on top of the . Is that a weakness in the design?

Lastly, how do they compare to a 27 or 28?

Thanks

Hugo

My brother has owned a Twister for many years and cruised extensively.

They are very sea capable yachts that have crossed oceans but can also be raced competitively.

Review of Twister 28

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all. Some boats has a hull made of Wood.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Twister 28 is equipped with a long keel. A long keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.52 - 1.62 meter (4.99 - 5.29 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Twister 28 is 1.50, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Twister 28 is about 107 kg/cm, alternatively 604 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 107 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 604 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 13m 2 (139 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Twisters Ending Explained: Do Kate & Tyler Tame The Tornadoes?

Tom cruise was "losing his mind" watching top gun: maverick star's new action movie, why helen hunt didn't return for twisters.

  • Twisters explores modern CGI advancements to enhance storm-chasing action sequences, surpassing the original Twister's impact on disaster films.
  • The cast of Twisters, led by newcomers Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, is poised to rival the star power of the iconic Twister ensemble.
  • Twisters stands as a strong stand-alone disaster film with a well-rounded narrative, heart-stopping action, and characters that evolve satisfactorily.

WARNING: Major spoilers for Twisters ahead!

After 28 years, the Twister franchise is finally continuing with the 2024 disaster blockbuster Twisters , naturally inviting comparisons between the two movies. Twisters is a sequel to the 1996 original, but makes very little mention of the original movie outside the storm-tracking technology used and its naming conventions. Twister is considered a benchmark movie in special effects, and it earned Academy Award nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound. That ground-breaking moviemaking helped make Twister one of the highest-grossing movies of the 1990s .

To truly compare the two movies, they need to be viewed through an objective lens with regard for the massive time gap between their release dates. For example, Twisters of course had more impressive CGI than Twister , but only because CGI has evolved so much in the last 30 years. It's better to look at the less technical elements of each film, and compare them based on the merits of those elements. The ending of Twisters echoes that of its predecessor, and there are enough common threads in the stories to warrant a truly fair comparison between the two movies.

Twisters' ending sees a new future for Kate, Tyler, and Javi. We break down the film's biggest takeaways, what's next for Kate and Tyler, and more.

Twister vs. Twisters: Which Has The Better Story

Both deal with state-of-the-art weather technology.

In terms of story, Twisters essentially begins as a continuation of the mission laid out in Twister . While Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton's Jo and Bill Harding aim to collect never-before-seen data from inside a tornado to enable a better warning system, Daisy Edgar-Jones' Kate Carter aims to use that very same data to potentially disrupt a tornado. Both stories are also comparable in that they feature a main character who has lost loved ones to tornadoes, although where that drives Jo Harding in Twister it's a source of fear and hesitation for Kate Carter in Twisters .

While Bill Paxton's death in 2017 made his return impossible, Bill Paxton's son James Paxton plays the angry motel guest who Kate and Tyler attempt to save from the tornado outside the rodeo.

Twisters also revitalizes the idea of two competing storm chasing teams, pitting Tyler Owens' experienced group of guerrilla storm chasers against Javier's highly-educated military-grade storm chasers. Twister reflected this dynamic with the Hardings' upstart homemade science and technology against Cary Elwes' Jonas Miller and his corporate-funded team. Finally, both stories involve their main characters battling multiple deadly tornadoes before ultimately succeeding in their respective missions ; Jo is able to collect the data she sought and Kate successfully breaks up a tornado.

While the stories are comparable, Twisters has the more well-rounded and complete narrative . There are more fully realized characters in the modern movie, as Glen Powell's Tyler Owens and Daisy Edgar-Jones' Kate Carter simply have more depth than Helen Hunt's Jo Harding and Bill Paxton's Bill Harding. The twist (no pun intended) that Tyler Owens' team has pure intentions while Javier's Storm PAR team is working for a corrupt land baron provided an interesting shift in the movie's second half, and helped both Tyler Owens and Kate Carter's characters show some true growth.

Twister vs. Twisters: Which Has The Better Cast

The top stars for each movie are household names.

Helen Hunt may not have returned for Twisters , but her influence was still felt in the continued use of the Wizard of Oz -related names for the scientific equipment used by Kate and the Storm PAR team. Hunt was at the head of a memorable cast that was part of why Twister was such a big hit at the box office. It acted as a star-making turn for both Hunt and Bill Paxton , and included a number of other big-name actors and actresses early in their careers, including Jami Gertz, Jeremy Davies, and future Academy Award winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Twister also included some true A-listers , even if they weren't quite at legendary status at the time of the movie's release in 1996. Cary Elwes was already an icon thanks to his leading roles in The Princess Bride and Robin Hood: Men In Tights , Alan Ruck was famous for his portrayal of Cameron in Ferris Bueller's Day Off , and Lois Smith had four decades of filmography under her belt at that time. In retrospect, it was a truly impressive cast that helped make the movie a huge success.

Twisters appears as if it will have an eerily similar impact for its cast. Just as Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton were in 1996, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell are right on the cusp of being household names, and Twisters could push them over the top. The supporting cast is also filled with talented up-and-comers like Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane, Katy O'Brian, and David Corenswet. Time will tell if this cast achieves the heights of its predecessor, but for now Twister has the superior cast .

Twister vs. Twisters: Which Has The Better Action

The action and cgi for twister holds up surprisingly well.

The talented crew behind the practical and special effects of Twister changed the game as far as disaster films are concerned. Thanks in part to a gargantuan budget, they were able to put massive funnels and waterspouts, explosions, and storm damage onto the screen that still hold up 28 years later. The storm-chasing sequences are exhilarating, and the tornadoes feel truly dangerous as they rip across the screen.

However, Twisters manages to match the action of Twister , and take it to the next level. While it does have the advantage of advances in CGI, the concepts of the dual tornadoes, the massive fire tornado that forms over the oil refinery, and the tornado sequences that take place at the rodeo and in the small town in the movie's finale are all superior to what was seen in Twister . Simply put, Twisters took the best parts of the action in Twister and made them better.

Why Twisters Is Better Than Twister

It's a more complete summer blockbuster.

There is no denying that Twister is an iconic movie in the disaster film genre , and a landmark in the development of special effects in American cinema. It has aged particularly well, and still stands as one of the top disaster films of all time. However, the 28-year gap between Twister and Twisters gave director Lee Isaac Chung time to get every little detail right when it comes to elevating what made the first movie so great.

Twisters is a tremendous stand-alone disaster film that nails every part of what's expected from a strong summer blockbuster.

Twisters includes a strong and engrossing narrative anchored by an extremely talented cast of young actors (and Maura Tierney, who elevates just about anything she appears in). It has heart-stopping action sequences built upon very strong modern CGI techniques. It has characters with true depth, who truly grow and change over the course of the movie en route to satisfying character arcs. Perhaps most importantly, it honors the original Twister without ever feeling like a simple remake ; Twisters is a tremendous stand-alone disaster film that nails every part of what's expected from a strong summer blockbuster.

A follow-up to the 1996 original film Twister, Twisters is a sequel set years after the original, said to be fast-tracked by Steven Spielberg and Mark L. Smith, with Frank Marshal as producer. Little details exist about the film, but Helen Hunt is expected to reprise her role as Jo, with the film likely to pay homage to the late Bill Paxton.

Twister Review: 28 Years Later, This Is Still Everything I Want From A Summer Blockbuster

  • Twister 's cast is stacked and the pace is relentless, with the majority being excellent.
  • The CG holds up well, while some acting is slightly uneven and Bill Paxton feels a little miscast.
  • Twister is comfort viewing with high entertainment value, and its quality genuinely holds up.

In 1996, Twister made storm-chasing cool. Actually, it's probably more fair to say that in 1996, Twister put storm-chasing on the radars of 90% of the world who had no idea it was even a thing. Released in the perfect storm of the 1990s blockbuster season, when nature's awesome power was something of a Hollywood obsession, Jan de Bont's breathless actioner became a hit with audiences, while contemporary critics appeared decidedly less awe-struck.

Twister is a lot more than the second-highest grossing movie of 1996 (behind Independence Day ), it is something of a time capsule — a love letter to movies that don't get made anymore. Or it would be, if belated sequel Twisters hadn't side-winded its way into cinemas in 2024, obviously. And what better excuse to revisit the movie that made flying cows so cool would anyone need?

Twister Never Insults Its Own Premise By Being At All Self-Aware

Let's spin back to that comment about Twister being a movie unlike anything Hollywood makes now. The key distinguishing point here is that Twister is, for every action-soaked minute of its runtime, completely and self-consciously absurd . It follows a Mad Max -like convoy of oddball meteorologists (complete with George Miller-esque nicknames like Bubba, Rabbit, and Preacher) who live solely for the thrill of never quite catching up to extreme weather events.

At no point do we get anything like a backstory for any of these delightful weirdos. There just isn't the time to get into it. There are tornadoes to chase, after all. All we need to know is that they're a serious endeavor; as serious as the surfboarding gangs of Point Break . And like Point Break , and Jan de Bont's other exceptional 1990s action classic, Speed , the key with Twister is that nobody is ever allowed to acknowledge how absolutely unhinged the whole premise is.

There's no ever-so-clever meta nods to how silly everything is, even when cows fly or a twister attacks a Drive-In theater, creating the iconic shot of the screen disintegrating just as Jack Nicholson proclaims "here's Johnny" in The Shining . The clown car procession of experts drop impenetrable scientific jargon alongside chest-thumping nonsense like “ they’re in the bear cage ” and “ you can really feel it through a telephoto lens ”. It's all absolutely ludicrous, and it's utterly irresistible; it's fun without having to insist it's secretly in on the joke.

Twisters Review: This Unnecessary Twister Sequel Actually Impressed Me

Led by the perfect chemistry between Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, Twisters provides ample thrills, solid characters, and great technical work.

Twister Nails The Monster Movie Vibe (With Very Little Blood)

Even though it's a sort of disaster movie, Twister is a lot more like a traditional monster movie , drawing from horror tropes more usually suited to slasher movies. The tornadoes are characters, treated with both reverence and fear by most of the characters (with the notable exception of Cary Elwes' Jonas), that seem to have personal vendettas against Paxton's Bill Harding and Helen Hunt's Jo Harding.

The twisters are captured with still-impressive effects work, and particularly, great sound design. At any given moment, it feels like any of the "dead meat" supporting characters could be sucked up into oblivion or smashed to smithereens. Just two characters die outside the prologue, and only as delicious karma for disrespectful hubris. Everyone else mostly gets away with scratches because they respect the monster movie code.

Somehow, the low kill count doesn't even compromise the monstrous allure of the twisters . As each one pings Jo's tracking technology and promises an escalation, the promise of the next set-piece is all that matters. And that's only ever a few moments away.

Twister Has Bags Of Heart To Back Up The Action

The personal element of the twister's murderous intent, which again feels ridiculous, is set up very astutely by the prologue, which adheres to the recognized formula of its genre siblings Jaws , Jurassic Park, and later, Emmerich's Godzilla . In all four cases, the opening hints at the awesome, terrifying power of the monster at the movie's heart, without ever showing it.

We see it only in human terms, and like all three of the named examples, the human stories anchor the action set-pieces and add spice to the stakes . In the same irresistibly silly spirit, Bill and Jo embark on the most dangerous bout of marriage counseling ever committed to celluloid.

If physical peril weren't enough, Twister also introduces that most 1990s of story conceits: A Nora Ephron-like romantic entanglement between Jo, Bill, and his new fiancée Dr. Melissa Reeves (Jami Gertz). Naturally, Jo has history with tornadoes, since one killed her father (in the prologue), and Bill is torn between the pull of a normal life with Melissa, and sexy twister chaos with Jo. At no point does anyone believe for a second that it will end any other way than badly for the stick-in-the-mud Doctor.

Twister's Cast Is Ridiculously Stacked (And The Stand-Out Is Obvious)

Twister 's cast is loaded with familiar faces. Alongside Paxton and Hunt, Cary Elwes stands out, but there are also colorful supporting performances by Alan Ruck, Jeremy Davies, and, improbably, actor-turned- Tár director Todd Field. The most fun, though, as everyone who's seen this movie will accept without question, is Philip Seymour Hoffman's Dusty Davies.

Hoffman's performance has no right to be as it is. He's playing a labrador of a storm-chaser, with no obvious qualifications, who only seems to be involved in this very serious adventure for a bit of a laugh. He bounds around with endless energy, completely unfazed by witnessing several near-death experiences for his best friends.

Hoffman is far removed from his later roles (and this is more like his underrated part in Along Came Polly ) and Dusty, like most of the supporting cast, should be insufferable. He has profound issues with respecting personal space, no off switch, and little respect for wholesome moments. But he also has incredible taste in music ( Twister 's soundtrack is an all-timer), and he's just not onscreen enough.

Twister Cast & Where They Are Now

While the modern cult classic film Twister stands out for a number of reasons, its iconic cast is one of the contributing factors to its greatness.

There's Only 1 Big Issue I Have With Twister Now

Hoffman's performance is not particularly charitable, because it draws so much attention, but Helen Hunt also deserves a lot of credit. Her trauma balances the impossible scale of the tornado set-pieces, and her yearning for Bill is subtly observed. My only problem with the whole thing, is that Bill Paxton is hopelessly miscast.

We're repeatedly told that Bill is Twister 's answer to Alan Grant in Jurassic Park , a sort of Indiana Jones if he had decided to give up on adventures and really knuckle down on nailing his classroom etiquette. He's a living legend, but Paxton is forced to play him as a stuffed-shirt TV weatherman (for some reason, the worst insult in this strange world of storm-jocks). He never quite recovers, and the energy you want from Paxton — his wildness — is clipped.

To see him talking scientific mumbo jumbo is just madness . He’s slotted in as the straight guy in the crazy gang, lost to Big Corporate Weather, when you want him to be much more like Dusty. The romantic subplot still works, even if his treatment of Melissa is pretty low, but Paxton's line delivery is also very uneven at times.

How Does Twister Hold Up In 2024?

The more important question here is why does it matter? But nostalgia is a dangerous thing, and rewatching movies almost 30 years later can bring forth all sorts of new insights. Back in 1996, I didn't notice the ADR problems, the silly dialogue (like the accusation that Jonas is a " corporate kiss-butt "), or the action movie playbook clichés. In 2024, I struggle to say they impacted my viewing experience in any real way.

The effects aren't up to modern standards, but that's because it came out in 1996, and they stand up a lot better than they have any right to. Crucially, De Bont's framing choices avoid too much heavy scrutiny. Yes, the flying cow is laughable, but there's so much joy in the accompanying " we've got cows " that again, it doesn't matter.

Where Twister Was Filmed (& Why The Locations Look So Authentic)

"Where was Twister filmed" is probably a question many fans have wondered after seeing the wide open plains of the natural disaster film.

What I do know is that The Shining Drive-In sequence would be clipped for socials infinitely in 2024 if this was a new movie. I also know that Twister set a formula so impressive that Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung stuck close to it in the sequel. And I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that this is the kind of comfort viewing that makes a mockery of conventional star ratings. Twister is a 3.5 star movie at most, but as blockbuster experiences go, it's near-enough perfect.

  • 90% of the cast is excellent
  • The pace is relentless and there's no pause between set-pieces
  • The CG holds up well
  • Cary Elwes' villain is great fun
  • Some of the acting is a little uneven
  • Whisper it, but Bill Paxton is miscast

Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos lead the ensemble cast of Twisters , which Minari filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung shot in Oklahoma, the heart of Tornado Alley. Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures and Amblin Entertainment are behind the feature, with Universal handling domestic distribution and Warners International taking overseas.

Twisters arrives 28 years after Twister , the envelope-pushing feature that broke ground for marrying visual effects with practical effects. It starred the late Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, and hailed from filmmaker Jan de Bont . The original film was a box office juggernaut, opening to $41 million ($82 million in today’s dollars) and ending its run with $494.5 million globally ($992.08 million today).

Twisters will easily win the weekend. It enters the fray with box office holdovers Longlegs , the Neon horror feature that stunned with a $22.6 million bow last weekend, and Universal and Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 , which launched over the July 4 holiday and has earned more than $235.6 million domestically to date.

The biggest Thursday preview of 2024 belongs to Pixar’s Inside Out 2 , which brought in $13 million the night of June 14, on its way to a $154.2 million opening weekend.
