Purchasing a boat, boat - break out another thousand.

Hire us to professionally inspect, evaluate and appraise it before you make that purchase.  Located in North Texas.

We specialize in pre-purchase surveys, damage surveys and appraisals of yachts and boats located anywhere in Texas or Oklahoma including the DFW metroplex, Fort Worth, Dallas, Lake Texoma, Eagle Mountain Lake, Lake Ray Hubbard, Lake Grapevine,  Lake Lewisville, Lake Travis, Freeport, Port Aransas, Galveston, Clear Lake, Lake Ray Roberts and will even go as far as Florida on a case by case basis.

We travel anywhere, so don't be afraid to pick up the phone and give us a call for a free quote!

It doesn't have to be that way! By hiring Southern Marine Surveying to look at the boat first, we can save you the headache and trouble of purchasing a bad vessel.

Take a look at the Blog page on this website to get an idea of what we look for when we survey a boat. By hiring me, I will  look at these things, and many more, to help protect you from buying a  potential headache.

Qualifications

Capt. John Seckman is a graduate of the Texas A&M Maritime Academy and former member of the Corps of Cadets. After graduating with a degree in Marine Transportation and a USCG 3rd Mate license in 2007, he worked full time offshore on commercial ships as a licensed mariner. He now resides with his family in Pottsboro Texas and is a full time Yacht & Small Craft surveyor.

  • Texas A&M Graduate - BS Marine Transportation
  • SAMS Accredited Marine Surveyor
  • USCG Licensed 1600 ton Master & 2nd Mate Unlimited
  • 8+ years of surveying experience
  • 10+ years of actual offshore experience operating vessels from 80-400 ft' all over the world as a USCG licensed mate and master mariner
  • 25+ years of overall boating experience

Examples of what we look for

Rotten transom, broken bilge pumps.

A rotten transom is no good! This can cost you thousands to repair, and  often times it's not even worth doing if the boat isn't worth it. Hire  me to find this before you buy that boat!

Un-secured bilge pump. What do you think happens when water starts  rising in the bilge and the pump isn't secured? NOTHING GOOD! Hire me to  find these kinds of things before it becomes an emergency.

Rotten Stringers

Something like this would cost you thousands to repair and can be very hard to detect. By hiring us we find the problem for you, thus giving you the knowledge to make an informed purchase.

Cracked Hoses

Delaminated fibrglass.

A cracked raw-water hose has the potential to sink your boat. By hiring a surveyor you can avoid a potential disaster.

Thru-Hull Fittings

Thru-hull fittings are one of the most critical components of your vessel, and could potentially sink your boat if not properly maintained and repaired.

Delaminated fiberglass isn't always as obvious as this, by hiring us to survey your boat we are sure to find any hidden delamination on your boat.

Frequently asked question

Marine surveyor process.

Premier marine surveyors are permitted to use a designation denoting membership in accrediting organizations requiring members to meet and adhere to strict professional, technical and ethical standards. Our Surveyors have  met all of those requirements and by using the ABYC, NFPA, USCG standards for surveys, you will be provided with a survey accepted by both lenders and insurance companies. Your inspection will be thorough and provide you with detailed information regarding condition, performance and value of your vessel.

In order to purchase insurance, most companies require proof of fair market value and current condition. A survey will provide you with this necessary information. The same can be said if financing is involved. A survey will provide the lender with the appraisal they need to approve the loan. However, more important than both the lender and insurance company, a survey will provide you the purchaser, with an in depth look at the condition, both interior and exterior, and mechanical so you have the ability to make a decision that is best for you. It has been said that a survey is the most cost effective insurance policy you can buy if it prevents you from purchasing someone else’s problem.

The surveyor does not prepare the vessel for a survey. That will be the responsibility of the owner/purchaser. The vessel should be clean and free of any debris or clutter so that a clear look at the structure is possible. If a ‘bottom inspection’ has been requested, the owner will need to make arrangements with a boatyard to have the vessel hauled out of the water. The bottom should be cleaned so any defects are visible. When a ‘sea trial’ has been ordered, it is the responsibility of the owner to retain a captain for operation during the survey. The surveyor cannot run the boat while inspecting it. All of these things need to be coordinated prior to the inspection date and all parties informed in order to ensure a smooth and thorough survey.

The party ordering the survey is responsible for payment which is required prior to the survey commencing. The ‘haul out’ and captain’s fee are also the responsibility of the person requesting the survey. These arrangements need to be made and confirmed between the owner/buyer prior to the inspection date.

Each survey is unique and there are many variables involved such as location, size of the vessel, condition and a host of others. Generally, the inspection portion is completed in hours with minimal inconvenience to either party. This is a question for the surveyor during the initial consultation.

Typically putting a boat through a sea trial and visual inspection will be enough for most surveys. Belts, hoses, mounts, stringers, pumps and overall condition will be assessed however we are not engine surveyors. If an engine survey is requested it will be up to the person requesting the survey to hire a qualified technician certified by the specific engine manufacturer. They will bring proprietary tools and knowledge to the survey that most surveyors may not have. Specialized compression testing tools needed to conduct tests on various types of motors are usually not part of a surveyor’s toolbox. We do offer oil sample spectro-analysis at a reasonable price and those results are usually available within a week. These oil tests can speak volumes about the condition of a motor or gear.

If you are requesting a survey for a boat which you already own, you may not need a sea trial. If you are purchasing a boat it is highly recommended a sea trial be conducted. During a sea trial the motors will be asked to perform under varying conditions. Typically back down tests, wide open throttle tests, control tests and function of all engine monitoring systems will be conducted. Much information about the condition and maintenance can be learned during a thorough sea trial. Highly recommended.

We have offices in Austin and Ft Worth with a proposed office in Houston and are prepared to travel to ensure you get a timely survey. We have links to other Surveyors qualified to the same high standards as ourselves and will readily recommend a surveyor to cover your needs outside Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Normally we will split travel costs with our clients depending on distance and time required. This should be discussed during the initial consultation.

RECREATIONAL MOTORCRAFT & SAIL PRE-PURCHASE CONDITION & VALUE INSPECTIONS

Sandy Beach

Gary now performs only Pre-Purchase Condition & Valuation Inspections with verbal reports as well as stand-alone Vessel Appraisals for tax or donation needs.

If your requirements are being driven by insurance, finance, or related business entities requiring a  written SURVEY report,  a good source for locating a certified survey in your area is:                      www.marinesurvey.org .

If this effort is simply for the piece of mind of a buyer as to the condition and ball park value of a vessel in consideration for purchase, a thorough inspection and verbal report may be all that is required and the reduced cost of such effort is justified.

With over 35 years of recreational boat and sailing experience, Gary Cook founded Ketch Yawl Maritime to assist clients with vessel inspections, appraisals, and consultation regarding upgrades, changes, or improvements to an existing craft.

Graduate of Chapman School of Seamanship Yacht &  Small Craft Surveying, Gary also has a BS in Electrical & Electronics Technology from the University of Houston..

("SURVEY" includes inspection as well as a written and signed report of findings sighted on the vessel. "INSPECTIONS" involve performing an identical inspection / discovery effort on the vessel but findings are detailed verbally with no written report)

All work is performed according to standards established within the US Code & Federal Regulations, American Boat & Yacht Council, National Fire Protection Association, and The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPSP) .

Serving The Texas Gulf Coast!

(713) 376-2237, a message from our owner, john huddleston:.

I was fortunate enough to grow up on the Texas Gulf coast.  I spent most of my summers boating.  I learned to sail at the age of 5. Soon after that, I was single handing a super sunfish and my sailing progressed to larger boats. At the age of 8, my father used to pick me up from school early on Wednesdays to race with a crew on a 40 ft Morgan out of Kemah. As the years progressed, my love for boating never waned.

boat surveyor - John Huddleston

I have many friends involved in boating and I was seeing the excitement of a new boat purchase, just to find the hidden cost that due to faults or lack of maintenance performed on the boat.  The excitement would turn to dismay.

Texas researchers gather in Corpus Christi for Texas Plastic Pollution Symposium

yacht surveyor texas

As the amount of plastic going into waterways is increasing, researchers and environmental groups are documenting how plastic is impacting wildlife and the environment.

The plastic is everywhere — in the oceans, on the beaches and in the human body.

The Texas Plastic Pollution Symposium held at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi on Thursday brought together individuals from across the state to discuss plastic pollution.

Aarthi Ananthanarayanam, director of the Ocean Conservancy's Climate and Plastics Initiative, presented the keynote address.

"We spend a lot of time thinking about where plastics end up, but we don't spend as much time thinking about where they come from and why we have so much plastic," Ananthanarayanam said.

Ananthanarayanam said that there is so much plastic today globally because so much oil is being produced.

"Plastics are made from the byproducts of crude oil and gas production," Ananthanarayanam said. "We actually use a staggering amount of oil to make plastic."

Throughout the day, other presenters discussed pollution monitoring projects in Texas, the chemistry of plastic pollution, impacts to fish and wildlife, solutions and education and outreach.

Huy Vu, Environmental Protection Agency Region 6 Trash-Free Waters Coordinator, spoke as well. The Trash-Free Waters program aims to reduce the amount of trash entering U.S. waters by working with partners to target land-based sources of trash pollution.

Aquatic trash can affect water quality, endanger plants and animals and pollute outdoor spaces that communities rely on for tourism and recreation. Plastic waste in particular is especially concerning because it is widespread and tends to persist in the environment for a long time.

Rather than biodegrading, plastic wastes can break down into microplastics which are difficult to clean up. Microplastics can also absorb toxic chemicals and cause harm to organisms that eat them, traveling up the food chain as the organisms are eaten by others. Microplastics have been found in fish and shellfish that people also eat.

Attendees also heard about a project that has roots in the Coastal Bend, Nurdle Patrol.

Nurdle Patrol is a citizen science project run by the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas.

Nurdles are plastic pellets that serve as raw material for plastic manufacturing. Through the Nurdle Patrol, citizen scientists count how many nurdles they can find on the beach in just 10 minutes.

"We've known for decades there has been a problem with nurdles in the environment," Nurdle Patrol founder Jace Tunnell said.

Wildlife eat nurdles, which soak up harmful chemicals, Tunnell said.

Recently, the effort has expanded to Mexico, working with Universidad Veracruzana.

The program has recorded high amounts of nurdles in Texas, as well as spots in Mexico like Veracruz, but few nurdles in places with fewer plastics manufacturing plants like the western coast of Florida.

About 100 volunteers in Mexico have completed almost 1,000 surveys in the past couple of years.

In total, about 10,000 volunteers worldwide across about 30 countries have participated.

"It's hard to make change if you don't show there's a problem," Tunnell said.

Kirsten Sorensen with Keep Texas Beautiful discussed the Texas Litter Database, a project that collects data from trash cleanups across the state.

As of mid-March, the project had collected 2,725 trash reports documenting the clean-up of 3.6 million pounds of litter.

Of the trash survey respondents classified and catalogued into categories, 62% was plastic.

One of Ananthanarayanam's key takeaways is that the predicted growth in plastic production is still just a projection.

"It's still a story people are telling to justify growth and expansion," Ananthanarayanam said. "And we, as policymakers, as advocates, as consumers, as scientists, have a responsibility to try to change that story."
