Press release – April 13, 2023
The Monaco Yacht Show officially announces the dates for its 32nd edition, which will take place from September 27th to 30th, 2023.
Considered the largest annual gathering of superyachts in the world, the event is a must-attend for private owners and new clients seeking a unique immersive experience in the yachting world.
Once again this year, the MYS will continue its three-year development programme "Seducation," with 2023 marking the consolidation of the first cycle.
The "Seducation" programme is an initiative designed in collaboration with the industry and is based on four essential pillars: environmental innovation, design, understanding of yachting, and visitor experience. The MYS organisers aim to make the show a true "ecosystem" of yachting, by promoting environmentally responsible innovation and offering visitors an immersive and educational discovery of the latest and most innovative yachting trends.
The ambitious objective of this programme is to strengthen the MYS's position as the international reference show for the luxury yachting industry, while offering an unforgettable experience to yacht and lifestyle enthusiasts.
Since 2021, the MYS has themed its exhibition, notably with the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub, the Sustainability Hub, the Adventure Area, and the Dockside Area, which allows privileged access to the show's docks for visitors interested in a yacht project.
The show will consolidate its first "Seducation" cycle by unveiling an impressive fleet of 120 superyachts and megayachts available on the market, including the highly anticipated 2023 launches. Visitors will also have the opportunity to discover the latest lifestyle trends on board a yacht, thanks to the exhibition of leading yachting companies. The Dockside Area and Adventure Area will also offer a complete immersion into yachting and related activities.
The MYS will also ensure the participation of driving force companies to present innovative and sustainable solutions in design and sustainability, highlighting eco-responsible technologies while offering an inspiring vision for yacht enthusiasts (Sustainability Hub, Yacht Design & Innovation Hub).
Finally, visitors can attend daytime conferences and receive information dedicated to future yacht clients. They can meet the best experts and most qualified professionals to help them realise their yacht project.
The Monaco Yacht Show strives to promote a unique experience for visitors, while enhancing the positive reputation and development of the yachting industry. An industry that has taken on its social responsibility with a proactive and committed approach for several years in economic, technological, and environmental development to meet current societal challenges.

Monaco Yacht Show
Created in 1991 by French entrepreneur Maurice Cohen, the MYS displays around one hundred unique and exceptional superyachts constructed by the world’s foremost shipbuilders. Along the docks where these prestigious vessels are moored, visitors will find a host of companies, shipbrokers, and other important yachting industry stakeholders.
The MYS, the Place to Sea
The Monaco Yacht Show is globally renowned for the exceptional quality and impressive size of its superyachts. Of the hundred or so on display every year, around forty are being unveiled for the first time in their worldwide debut. The average length of the vessels is 50 metres, with some mega yachts exceeding 100 metres. In recent years, the MYS has expanded its offering to include the ultra-high end markets intrinsically linked to the exclusive world of superyachting, featuring luxury goods, cars and motorcycles, helicopters, and private jet constructors.
The Show is now an iconic event, popular with private visitors who come to discover the incredible collection of superyachts available to purchase or charter, and to meet market experts in the festive and glamorous atmosphere of the Principality of Monaco.
Not to be missed...
At nightfall, the superyachts come alive in a different atmosphere, offering a spectacular illuminated display of a thousand lights.

The Ultimate Guide to the Monaco Yacht Show
The Monaco Yacht Show is a four-day event that takes place each year in Monaco’s deepwater port, Port Hercules, and is Europe’s biggest in-water display of superyachts of over 20 metres long. At any time of the year, impressive yachts are moored in the principality’s harbour, but this annual trade show really does take luxury yachting to a whole new level.
125 one-off superyachts feature in the monaco boat show.
The Monaco Yacht Show was started in 1991 by the French entrepreneur Maurice Cohen and was most recently acquired by British event organiser Informa in 2005. Today, the show has grown to curate an exhibition of 125 superyachts, welcoming over 550 companies from the yachting industry and unveiling 45 new launches in a worldwide premiere.
How to be dazzled by the Monaco yachts
The Professional Pass is for professionals of the nautical and luxury markets and costs a cool €950, while the Sapphire Experience doesn’t come with a provided price tag, which gives you an idea of the kind of exclusive visit it is. It is reserved for future superyacht charterers or owners and more details and contact information are available on the event’s website .

Something for car lovers, too
In 2016, the Monaco Yacht Show introduced Car Deck, an exhibition space within the boat show to showcase luxury cars. Manufacturers have included Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin and more. Take a look at the yacht show’s layout for information on entrances, lounges, refreshment areas and more.
Arrive by helicopter
In for a penny, in for a pound. Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular ways to travel to Monaco is by helicopter, which could be just what you’re looking for if planning an exclusive trip to the Monaco Yacht Show. Monacair links the Nice airport to Monaco in just seven minutes. In true Monaco fashion, seven minutes will set you back €130!
Monaco’s train station connects with Nice’s main station, too, which provides a slightly more affordable option and of course, you can drive to the principality, as long as the underground parking systems don’t put you off.

World’s richest celebrate end of summer at €4bn Monaco yacht show
Number of billionaires interested in superyachts said to have grown despite Russia sanctions and global economic crisis
“C hange the TV channels now,” the captain of a $95m (£85m) Albatross superyacht calls out to a deckhand. “That guy has probably lost two mil in the last two minutes and we’re trying to convince him to drop 95.”
“That guy” is a prospective buyer of the 72-metre long vessel floating in Monaco’s Port Hercules where the world’s richest people (and their entourages) have gathered this week for the annual yacht show . With more than €4bn (£3.5bn) worth of marine luxury on display, it is as brokerage firm Burgess puts it: “The chicest way for billionaires to celebrate the end of summer”.
The TVs on Albatross – there are more than a dozen onboard – are beaming out live coverage of another day of economic chaos on business channel CNBC as the US market open down 2%.
That brief glimpse, before the screens are hurriedly switched off, is the only sign in this millionaires’ playground of the economic trouble affecting the outside world. The sanctions against Russian oligarchs, whose conspicuous consumption has kept European shipyards so busy in recent years, have not spoiled the party. Veuve Clicquot champagne or Whispering Angel rosé is available at some stands for free for anyone with a ticket to the show ( tickets if you were to buy them cost €500 a pop ).
“Of course the industry is impacted [by the global economic crisis], says Francesca Webster, the editor-in-chief of the trade industry publication SuperYacht Times. “But the number of billionaires has grown over the last two years meaning that there has been a rebalance despite the loss of the Russian clientele. Some shipyards are suggesting that the number of serious future clients – aka billionaires – has grown from around 25 to 30, almost all of which are American or Asian.”
Albatross is huge. The principal suite spans the whole 13-metre beam (width) of the yacht and includes a dressing room and two large bathrooms (one with a floral design in silver mosaics, and the other depicting golden clouds). There are five further large bedroom suite cabins, several large salons, a fully equipped gym, an eight-person jacuzzi, and a “touch-and-go” helipad all connected by a glass elevator.
The broker won’t confirm who is selling Albatross, although the six-year-old yacht has previously been reported as belonging to Majid Al Futtaim , an Emirati shopping malls and hotels billionaire who died last December.
It is far from the biggest vessel on show. That title goes to Ahpo, which is 115.1 metres long and moored on the other side of the port. Unfortunately, the Guardian is not welcomed onboard that yacht as “you don’t look like likely charterers”.
It’s a fair cop. Ahpo, which has eight bedroom suites as well as a gym, swimming pool, spa, sauna – and hammam, beauty room, piano bar and dancefloor, costs a minimum of €2.5m a week to charter.
That’s before “expenses”, which include fuel, food, drinks, and docking and mooring fees that can easily run into tens of thousands a night for yachts as large as Ahpo in billionaires’ favourite spots, such as Portofino, the Amalfi coast and Cagliari in Sardinia.
The crew also expect tips in the region of €1,500-2,500 a week each, according to several captains who spoke on condition of anonymity. There are 36 crew members on Ahpo.
Despite the costs, a broker at Moran, which arranges charters, says the yacht was rented for six weeks this summer and is “fast booking up for next year”.
Tristan Hooper, the captain of Luna B, a 66-metre yacht available for charter at a more reasonable €500,000 a week, says the vessel was rented for 12 weeks last year and by a wide range of people. “We’ve had all sorts of guests, from A-listers to Middle Eastern royalty,” he says onboard the $60m craft. “We thrive with tall people, because we have a high ceiling height.” (Yes, NBA basketball players have chartered the vessel, but he refuses to name names).
Asked about tips, Hooper says a €2,000 tip is “pretty standard”. “You hear stories of way more than that,” he says. “But on other charters you can be working really hard all week and walk away with nothing.”
The billionaire Jamaican-Canadian investor Michael Lee Chin upgraded to the Ahpo – the phonetic pronunciation of the Chinese pictogram meaning Grand Lady – after selling his $130m Quattroelle to the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed al-Maktoum.
Both were built by Germany’s Lürssen Yachts, which also created Dilbar, the world’s largest superyacht by volume. It is one of more than a dozen superyachts seized from oligarchs subjected to sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Dilbar, which cost a reported $600m and is allegedly owned by the family of the sanctioned metals magnate Alisher Usmanov , was seized by authorities in Hamburg in April.
Germany said it had detained the yacht, apparently named after Usmanov’s mother, because it was ultimately owned by his sister, Gulbakhor Ismailova. Usmanov has denied this.
This week, German police investigating money-laundering accusations searched the yacht. Prosecutors, who did not name Usmanov, said they were investigating money laundering and tax evasion allegations concerning a 69-year-old Russian business man. A spokesperson for Usmanov, who is 69, said the police and prosecutor investigations were “examples of blatant lawlessness under the guise of the sanctions law”.
The boat builders and brokers in Monaco are reluctant to talk about the impact of Russian sanctions on the superyacht industry despite oligarchs making up a fairly large chunk of the market, particularly at the priciest end.
The former Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich has bought seven, and still owns three including the 162.5-metre Eclipse, which was the world’s largest when he bought it in 1998. He has avoided having his yachts seized by taking them to Turkey, while other sanctioned oligarchs have sheltered their boats in Dubai.
It’s all too much for Pauline, one of thousands of people hired to work at the show as stewards, security guards or to pilot small rigid inflatable boats to transport people around the harbour.
“I work at a lot of events, but this is the only one that drives me crazy, it is just so wrong,” Pauline, 27, says as she helps guest to board one of the RIBs. “It’s wrong to be spending all this money on these things, and it’s just terrible for the planet – think how much pollution they make. These are really big buildings on the water. Sometimes I just want to do something to stop it all.”

The largest yachts racing at Monaco Classic Week
A staple on the yachting calendar since 1994, Monaco Classic Week is back for a three-day parade of some of the finest classic superyachts. Taking place from 13 to 16 September, the biennial event invites owners and crew of classic yachts or faithful replicas to Port Hercule for three days of celebrating sailing yachts (and motor yachts) of yore, combining racing with a glamorous social programme. BOAT International delves into the heritage behind the largest sailing yachts participating this year...
Length: 69.3m Year: 1903
Superyacht owner Ed Kastelein, who has a longstanding passion for recreating classic racing yachts, triumphantly relaunched Atlantic in 2010 with an identical sail plan to the 1903 vessel and original lines by Van der Graaf . The three-masted schooner was commissioned by New York Yacht Club member Wilson Marshall and initially hit the headlines in 1905 when she was crowned the transatlantic Kaiser’s Cup winner. Here, she set the record for the transatlantic speed record – covering a staggering 341 miles in 24 hours with an average speed of 14.1 knots – a title which she safeguarded until 1998. As a result, she is the object of many sailing enthusiast's affection and is the type of vessel purchased as a scale model. Kastelein, however, went the extra mile and built a full replica of her.
Length: 40.55m Year: 1899
Black Swan started life as Brynhild with a yawl rig, built in 1899 at Camper and Nicholson in England with design by Charles Nicholson . She was the leader of the pack in a number of races at the beginning of the 20th century, including the King's Cup, and has undergone several changes and different rig configurations over the years. At one point, she was renamed Changrilla , but was renamed Black Swan in the 1960s. Today, she carries a gaff rig after an extensive restoration project at the Beconcini yard in La Spezia, Italy.
Length: 65.3m Year: 1927
Built by Camper & Nicholsons and delivered in 1927, Creole is the largest wooden sailing yacht in the world and now sails under the loving stewardship of the Gucci family. The behemoth was launched as Vira by Camper & Nicholsons in 1927 for US carpet manufacturer Alexander Smith Cochran. By the time Maurizio Gucci bought the vessel in 1983, she was badly in need of another passionate and wealthy yachtsman to pamper her – a call to which Gucci answered with his penchant for gilded glamour. Now, the big, stylish boat sails like a dream with Allegra Gucci at the helm. Despite being the scion of a fashion dynasty, she is also a serious sailor and is often spotted aboard the deck during races, or getting involved at the shipyard when on land.
Elena of London
Length: 55m Year: 2009
The 55-metre sailing yacht Elena is based on original 1910 drawings by designer Nathanael G. Herreshoff . The original Elena was commissioned by Morton Plant, who wanted a schooner “that can win”. She certainly delivered, thanks to her deep keel to improve windward ability, going on to be a major contender amongst the cream of the American schooner fleet and emerging as champion in the 1928 King's Cup Transatlantic Race. The 2009 yacht is a replica of the same name, still boasting several wins under her keel including at the Monaco Classic Week and Les Voiles de St Tropez.
Hallowe'en
Length: 24.69m Year: 1926
Launched in 1926 and built by Fife , Hallowe'en was set apart from other gaff-rigged racers of her time as a Bermudan cutter. Her owners continued to experiment with her rig and eventually, she was transformed into a yawl, going on to spend many years racing the Mediterranean and the Atlantic before falling off the radar. Walter Wheeler later discovered her and renamed her Cotton Blosson IV, where she continued her history of ocean racing before being donated to the Classic Boat Museum in Rhode Island. Her refit spanned five years and, just before funds dried up, she was rescued from the scrap heap by Elizabeth Meyer, the woman behind the restoration of J Class Endeavour , who helped find a buyer to restore her to her former glory.
Length : 39m Year : 2013
Naema is a modern classic, designed by Olivier F. van Meer and based on an Alfred Mylne schooner named Panda that sank following a fire in 1983. The topsail schooner was built at Graafship in Turkey and underwent a significant refit in 2014 which saw her plumbing, engines and technical equipment removed and replaced. She is a regatta regular, having competed at The Superyacht Cup, The Candy Store Cup and the Inaugural Capri Classica. Naema is fitted with Harken electric winches and a comprehensive sail wardrobe that includes a 219-square-metre main sail.
O'Remington
Length : 28.6m Year : 1946
Built by Cantiere di Donna as a wine transport vessel, this two-masted schooner was purchased by Lord Remington in 1958 on the advice of friend and influential filmmaker Federico Fellini. Maria Del Mar became the O’Remington , a legendary hub for artists of the French New Wave artists and the Italian aristocracy. Following the death of Lord Remington, several restorations (carried out by shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and fashion designer Alberta Ferretti) and a stint as a charter boat in Sudan, O’Remington was forgotten in Genoa Port where it suffered from gradual decline. She was redeemed by new owners in 2017, went through several years of renovation and refitting, and is now back among her peers on the Croisette.
Length : 26m Year : 1890
Bridgette Bardot once graced the decks of this Thetis Ware gaff-rigged yawl. Brought back to her former glory after an extensive restoration in Spain (1997-1999), Sky has competed in various regattas across the Mediterranean and boasts a top speed of 14 knots. A further comprehensive refit was carried out from 2008 to 2014 which saw new sails equipped, all systems modernised and 27 of her oak frames replaced.
Length : 28.7m Year : 1909
Built by William Fife for the Duke of Medinacelli, friend to the King of Spain, Tuiga was designed identically to the King’s yacht Hispania so that they could race on equal terms. After collecting a string of second places, rumours spread that the Duke was holding back so as not to embarrass the King. The first 15-metre to be restored at Fairlie , Tuiga has been owned by the Monaco Yacht Club since 1993 and is often skippered by Pierre Casiraghi, son of Princess Caroline of Hanover.
The Lady Anne
Length : 23.4m Year : 1912
Sistership to Tuiga , The Lady Anne was built for Baron George Coats of Glasgow who, at the time of his death, was one of the wealthiest men in Scotland. Commissioned in a bid to recover the coveted 15 Metre Cup from the Germans, Coats’ dreams were dashed by Charles Nicholson , who was drafting his revolutionary Marconi gaff-rig at the same time The Lady Anne was being built. She would end up adopting Nicholson’s rig only two years later.
Length : 33.5m Year : 1939
Iduna was delivered in 1939 and remained the largest yacht to leave the Dutch shipyard until 1960. Today, she remains a shining Feadship example. Her most notable restoration was led by Dutchman Johan van den Bruele in 1999 and he was determined to preserve as much of the original vessel as possible, including the main mast, skylights, deck saloon, compass, anchor winch and steering wheel. Any other parts were built using traditional boatbuilding methods to align with her authentic look.
Length : 24.08m Year : 1938
Delivered as a Bermudan yawl in 1938, Mariella has a 28-metre mainmast and she flies 279 square metres of sail. Carlo Falcone, proprietor of the Antigua Yacht Club Marina, was the owner for many years and she has participated in many regattas on both sides of the Atlantic. She is regularly spotted at classic races like the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta and Les Voiles de Saint Tropez.
Length : 27.6m Year : 1908
Mariska was delivered in 1908 as a J Class racing yacht – helped by her fine lines, narrow beam, deep keel and sweeping overhangs. She earned her spurs by emerging as champion in a number of races, including the 1911 Cowes Regatta. More recently, in 2007, a new owner began a complete restoration, where she was taken back to bare timbers and carefully rebuilt, spanning two years and 25,000 man-hours. She has gone from strength to strength on the classic regatta circuit, winning the Giraglia, Puerto Sherry, San Remo and St Tropez classic regattas in 2016.

This biennial event, which is the first gathering in the world to honour sailing and motor boats, bears witness to the Yacht Club de Monaco’ s unfailing attachment to the maritime heritage of sailing. Echoing the first motorboat meetings in 1904, this event is the only one to bring together the most beautiful traditional sailing boats, with vintage motor-yachts and old motorboats, to which a fleet of 12′ Dinghies has been added for four the last editions.

The 17th Monaco Classic Week-La Belle Classe is already shaping up to be an exceptional event, celebrating the gastronomy, grace and beauty of classic boats on land and at sea, not forgetting the dexterity of motorboats. This event is an opportunity to honour the maritime heritage represented by these boats, which are often over a hundred years old, to preserve traditional craftsmanship, to rediscover the joys of old-fashioned sailing and to bring owners and crews together ashore for moments of conviviality in the pure tradition of Monegasque savoir-vivre and its “Art de Vivre la Mer” so dear to the Y.C.M.

Joining the Gucci-loafer set for a glimpse of superyacht life in Monaco
Sanctions imposed on russian oligarchs don’t seem to have hurt the big-flashy-boat industry.
MONTE CARLO — Welcome aboard at the Monaco Yacht Show, where the world’s superyachts are bought and sold. Warning: If you find the excesses of the 0.01 percent triggering, avert your eyes.
The scene here is like a parking lot crammed with water toys that cost a cool collective $4.3 billion.
The technical term for the size of these pleasure craft is “enormous.” The top class — the megayachts — are now 100 meters in length — that’s 328 feet, more than a football field from goal line to goal line. There are dozens of these boats on order.
There’s also talk of gigayachts to come. Asked what a giga might be, a top broker joked: “That would be a repurposed aircraft carrier.”
Have one helipad? Sad. Why not have two?
Jet Skis? The new must-have toy is a submersible.
There are onboard elevators, naturally, to get between the four, five and six decks. Surfaces are clad in lost forests of teak and mahogany with gleaming stainless steel accents. The deckhands are constantly polishing, rubbing, squeegeeing.
You might think superyacht sales would be super down, what with global inflation, a real estate bust in China, threats of recession, trench warfare in Europe and — dare we say it here? — a planetary climate crisis. Surprise. You would be wrong.
Italy impounds $700 million megayacht linked to Putin
Russian oligarchs have traditionally been big buyers of showy yachts, accounting for an estimated 10 percent of sales. Sanctions and the U.S. Justice Department’s Task Force KleptoCapture have taken a bite. A lot of the Russian boats — including the $700 million megayacht Scheherazade, allegedly owned by Vladimir Putin himself — have been seized.
But the world is bigger than Russia — and there are more billionaires than ever.
“The sanctions didn’t affect the industry as much as you might think,” said Bob Denison , a top American broker with new offices in Monaco. He said the orders for “new builds” in European shipyards that were canceled because the buyers were placed on sanction lists were quickly snapped up by others who weren’t.
Russian oligarchs loved luxe Sardinia. Now they’re frozen out of paradise.
The problem with the superyacht market today?
“There’s not enough superyachts,” said Jeremy Roche, one of Denison’s directors.
It costs 600 euros ($635) for a day pass to the Monaco Yacht Show. Many well-heeled lookie-loos have come this week to stroll along the blue-carpeted docks and bump into a champagne tent.
And by well-heeled, we mean it. You must take off your shoes to board boats at the show — even if you are the prince of Monaco. So high-end footwear is strewn in front of the gangways, the ubiquitous Gucci loafers jumbled together with sneakers from Dior and Balenciaga that will set you back about $1,000 per pair.
The number of real buyers — the whales — is harder to calculate. A sales rep estimated there might be one buyer for every 100 staff — that’s exhibitors, brokers, deckhands, hostesses, marketers, cleaners, security.
We got an invitation from a friendly publicist to take a tour of Phoenix 2, built by Lürssen shipyard in northern Germany. She’s 90 meters, or 295 feet, with room for 14 guests in seven cabins, attended by a crew of 28 — and on sale for $132 million.
The boat was designed for the “richest man in Poland,” the late Jan Kulczyk, who wanted the interior to resemble an art deco Manhattan penthouse. There’s an Empire State Building vibe, with a lot of black and white — plus a bourbon bar, lap pool, steam sauna, screening room, gym, wine cave, Steinway piano and duplex owners’ cabin.
Henry Smith, a partner at Cecil Wright brokerage, was showing the boat and happy to discuss the evolving market for superyachts — generally, boats more than 24 meters.
Yacht justice: A new front in the war drags Russia’s oligarchs into the spotlight
Three decades ago, a 40-meter yacht would have been gigantic, he said. Today, those are considered midsize. Of the roughly 1,200 superyachts on order in boatyards, about two dozen are more than 100 meters.
“Boats just get bigger and bigger, with prices going up and up,” he said. “The future looks bright.”
The pace of sales is down a bit from the records of the pandemic years, when the ultrarich sought out superyachts as safe havens. But Smith said this year is still good.
He and his brokerage recently oversaw the sale of superyacht Kismet , originally built for Pakistani American billionaire Shahid Khan , owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The boat was on the market for just three months and sold for 149 million euros ($157 million).
Jaguars owner Shahid Khan proves to be the exception in more ways than one among NFL owners
The buyers keep coming, but they are changing, the brokers say.
Traditionally, they have been multimillionaires — 99 percent male — who sell their businesses in their mid-60s and want some high-end downtime with family and friends. The trend now is younger, with younger families, who struck it rich, or as Smith called it, experienced “a big liquidity event.”
He said, “I took on a chap who made several billion very quickly,” who wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted, except that he really wanted … something big.
At the boat show, we learned that sometimes it’s impossible to accommodate everything you need on your superyacht.
Tenders — used to ferry owners and guests from ship to shore — have a low profile and can be stored aboard in what the yachting community calls “the garage.” Robert Oakley of Falcon Tenders will sell you Miss Wonderly for $2.19 million. It’s powered by a hybrid diesel-electric engine, which gives you one hour on electric in port. “Think limousine,” he said.
But where do you put the sub?
Ian Sheard, the engineering director of Seamagine , maker of private submarines, explained it to us.
“You got the big white boat, the superyacht, right?” Sheard said. “Then you need the toy hauler.”
“The ‘shadow ship’ that follows the superyacht that has all the stuff you can’t fit on the superyacht.”
Richer than the royals: Win puts Rishi Sunak’s wealth in the spotlight
His submarines cost $4 million to $7 million and can carry two to seven passengers, with over 12,000 drama-free dives so far.
On our tours of superyachts, the guides often spoke of the boats’ “understated glamour.” But the glamour seemed bluntly stated, which was kind of the point?
Some interiors had a look and feel of a neutral-color Four Seasons. Others brought to mind a Vegas suite for a high-roller.
Aboard the $110 million Kensho, the publicist said that the owner (Udo Müller, chief executive of Ströer Media), wanted “a villa at sea.”
She described it as “more Zen, more calm.”
The kind of calm that three onboard bars might provide.
An older, smaller superyacht can be had for as little as $10 million — the price of an upscale home in Los Angeles or London. But if you are not ready to buy, many of the boats are used by their owners for only a few weeks in the high season and are otherwise available for charter.
To rent the Phoenix 2 costs a base price of $1.22 million per week. That doesn’t include fuel, food, drink, taxes, mooring and dock fees or tips — so call it $1.6 million. We had to ask a couple of times about the bill and were told to keep adding zeros.
It’s the fuel that gets you. A 50-meter yacht making a fast run between Monaco and St. Tropez might burn through $35,000 of diesel.
And even if you don’t go anywhere, a mooring ball or a slip at a primo port can cost thousands of dollars a night.
There was some talk at the Monaco Yacht Show about sustainability — about new green fuels, more gentle anchoring — but it was a sideshow.
Smith, the super broker, put it this way. “Green yachting is mostly a fallacy,” he said, adding, “no illusion, these things pollute.” Though you can mitigate the damage a bit.
He suggested anyone chartering a superyacht for a week “go out and plant a lot of trees.”

MONACO YACHT SHOW 2023
Countdown: Monaco Yacht Show 2023
With the industry’s most hotly anticipated event just around the corner, we take a look at what lies in store for mys 2023….
With just days until the industry’s most hotly anticipated event opens its doors to yachting aficionados from all around the globe, we take a look – and a much-needed breath – to see what’s in store.
Kicking off between the 27th and 30th September in Port Hercule, the Monaco Yacht Show 2023 is set to showcase a grand total of 111 yachts over 30m, with attendee figures slated to be more than 30,000 and more than 450 major companies represented from across the industry.
With competition to see the boats in person likely to be particularly fierce this year, it is worth being prepared to wait your turn, unless you’re in the fortunate position of actually looking to buy. Highlights include the iconic, freshly refitted Tim Heywood-designed 97m Lürssen superyacht Carinthia VII , which has a ‘touch-and-go’ bow helipad, 12m swimming pool and top-notch guest accommodation split across two decks.
Sold to a new owner by Fraser Yachts just ahead of MYS 2022 for an asking price of €95m, Carinthia VII will undoubtedly be a popular choice for tours this year and looks set to be the largest yacht in attendance.
Notably, there are no confirmed 100m plus vessels on the attendance list this year, but moving down the size rankings slightly, there will be a total of nine superyachts above 80m on display. This includes the 84m Feadship Savannah , which has been listed for the first time since its delivery in 2015.
Launched by Feadship’s facility in Aalsmeer, the head-turning superyacht is often cited as the world’s first diesel-electric hybrid motoryacht, with its power provided by a main diesel engine with three gensets, as well as a megawatt of storage batteries alongside an azimuth thruster. Her innovative design is the result of a combination of Studio De Voogt and Cristina Gherardi Bernadeau and Marello Bozzarelli from Paris-based CG Design and includes such design hallmarks as a floating superstructure and an underwater lounge.
Described as both “peerless” and “one of the most iconic yachts to ever grace the water” by the broker, Edmiston president Robert Shepherd, who says, “There are yachts, then there are Feadships, and then there is Savannah ,” enthuses Shepherd. “Words can’t describe my excitement and the honour of being appointed as the broker for this marvel of a superyacht.”
Read more in our exclusive interview here , and, if you’re lucky, you can see Savannah for yourself at the show at Berth R03, Quai Rainer 1er at the Monaco Yacht Show.
As the industry continues to work at being less myopic and taking its environmental responsibilities more seriously, it is of significance that the Sustainability Hub will be making a reappearance at the 2023 show.
Hosted in collaboration with the Water Revolution Foundation and sponsored by Siemens Energy, the exhibitors who will be found in the dedicated 200m 2 space in Darse Sud are vetted in advance. This is to ensure that only eligible companies with genuine and viable sustainable solutions are included, to avoid any dangers of so-called ‘greenwashing’.
As Water Revolution Executive Director Robert Van Tol says: “This exhibition area is designed to showcase technologies that bring concrete improvements to the world of yachting, including the health of the oceans. We aim to support exhibitors, service providers, and visitors alike in finding viable solutions to environmental challenges.”
Keen to practise what they preach, MYS also hosted a webinar for exhibitors and show suppliers in early summer to discuss its three-phase Cabon Neutrality Transition Plan – which is aiming to reduce CO 2 emissions by 60% by 2025 compared to 2022, alongside aligning with the Principality of Monaco’s aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Finally, as owners continue to display their interest in reaching further flung destinations, whether via private or charter yachts, the popular Adventure Area will also be making its return in 2023, spanning two locations within Port Hercule. A display of luxury vehicles, water toys and tenders will be accessible at Quai Antoine 1er, with 20 tenders found at Quai Jarlan, including luxurious off-road vehicles, top-tier gadgets and helicopters, as well as showcasing some of the world’s most cutting-edge and exciting water toys.
The Superyacht Group team will be out in force, wearing our signature red, at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show and we look forward to catching up with our friends and colleagues there.

A cocktail to fund ocean protection
Prince Explorer Gin has announced the renewal and expansion of its ocean protection awareness initiative, as part of Monaco Ocean Week 2024.
Bar Américain, Café de Paris, Coya, Maya Bay, Buddha Bar, Cova Larvotto, Monaco Yacht Club, Méridien Beach Plaza, or the Métropole… Monaco’s most prestigious establishments have been invited to create an original cocktail called “Protect the Ocean,” featuring Prince Explorer Gin.
1 euro per cocktail to protect the ocean

A Monaco yacht rental vacation offers a mesmerizing selection of things to see and do. Here is our top picks of some of the most outstanding:
Don't Miss:
- Monte Carlo Casino : Founded in 1863, the casino is arguably one of the most iconic buildings on the French Riviera, and has been immortalised on the silver screen several times over, from the likes of James Bond, Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca and Ocean's Eleven to name a few.
- Salle Garnier opera house : Added in 1878 to offer additional entertainment to visitors, adjacent to the casino the exquisite Belle Époque facade was designed by Charles Garnier and features a grand hall with seating for 524 patrons.

- Oceanographic Museum : Perched on cliffs overlooking the glittering Mediterranean, the museum is home to an array of fascinating marine exhibits spread over 5 levels, including interactive displays, tactile pool, Whale Room and ImmerSEAve 360º virtual reality transporting visitors to the depths of the ocean.
- Cathédrale de Monaco : Built on a site that dates back to the 13th century, the cathedral has played a significant role in the history of the Monegasque royal family.
- Larvotto Beach : This man-made stretch of pale cream sands offers visitors a relaxing sun-kissed haven where you can enjoy table service as you top up your tan. The newly revamped complex also boasts an array of cafes, bars and restaurants lined along its pine-shaded promenade.
With the grandeur of a bygone era, Monaco's diminutive dimensions belie the rarefied bubble it attracts: long graced by stars, royalty and the SuperyachtSet, the country's iconic marina is a superyacht extraordinaire. Bestowed with bars and boutiques nearby, cradled by soaring hills that are etched with the eye-poppingly ornate royal palace, and the Belle Époque twin glories of Casino de Monte-Carlo and opera house Salle Garnier a mere saunter away, Port Hercule is ablaze with the world's glitterati each summer.
This picturesque coastal nation is the world’s smallest country, after the Vatican, and is renowned as a haven for the rich and famous, who enjoy the Monaco’s tax-free status and glamorous locales.
In 1297, the Grimaldi family settled in Monaco after the land was granted to Genoa by Emperor Henry IV, with ancestors of the family controlling the principality ever since. In 1949, Prince Rainier III ascended the throne, and married Grace Kelly in 1956. The prince played an important role in bringing economic prosperity to the area, while his American actress wife was instrumental in promoting arts and culture and bringing glamor to the small nation.
The principality’s tax-free status and no income tax has attracted many rich residents, who have also played their part in shaping this tiny glittering enclave into the JetSet destination it is today. Monaco’s rich cultural influences can also be attributed to its neighbors France , Italy & Spain , with Roman Catholicism making up over two thirds of its resident’s religious beliefs.
Perched with poise above the cornflower-blue waters of the Mediterranean , motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in Monaco are in prime position to explore the wonders of the encircling French Riviera, such as Villefranche-sur-Mer, St. Tropez , Nice and Cannes , as well as venturing further afield to the Italian Riviera . Unsure what type of charter for Monaco to choose? Below we've highlighted the main points of difference.
A crewed motor yacht charter in Monaco beckons guests with its decadent allure, entirely in keeping with the principality's chichi surrounds. Think your own private chef, five-star hotel service and amenities onboard your plush paradise. With a yacht charter itinerary put together entirely to meet your needs, make the most of your freedom at sea and anchor at otherwise inaccessible bays dotted along the glittering shore.
If you are looking to lap up the splendor of Monaco and the nearby cruising grounds of France at a slower rhythm (combined with considerable outdoor deck space) a sailing yacht charter is an ideal fit. Coupled with Monaco's enviable climate, averaging more than 300 days of sunshine per year, you'll bronze in timeless style.
There is a multitude of charter yachts available in and around Monaco, given its prime position on the French Riviera and as one of the most popular West Mediterranean yacht charter destinations among the SuperyachtSet. With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget. For convenience we have listed the average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in Monaco below;
- For motor yacht rentals in Monaco, prices can range from $31,319 to $1.6m per week, plus expenses
- For luxury sailing yacht rentals in Monaco, prices can go from $30,130 to $542,712 weekly, plus expenses
As well as the Monaco yacht charter fee itself (plus any delivery or redelivery costs), you will need to pay VAT. But how much does VAT cost for yacht charters in Monaco? Below are the main points you need to consider before chartering:
- The new rules, which came into force in 2020, state that VAT on charters starting in Italy, France and Monaco is now applied at the country's full VAT rate at the origin of the charter, i.e. the port of embarkation.
- The standard rate of VAT is 20% for charters originating in either Monaco or France. This applies regardless of the port of disembarkation.
- For itineraries incorporating other countries, VAT will always be applied at the rate of the country of origin. So, if the charter commences in France or Monaco the rate is 20%, if the charter begins in Italy the rate is 22%.

The best time to visit Monaco varies on your intentions. Head out in May or September if you are looking to see and be seen at one of its world-renowned events, but avoid these months if you are after something more tranquil in nature. Opt for June and August when the temperature peaks, or October for clement weather and warm waters but fewer crowds.
related articles
- Monaco is eminently a walkable city, however it can be quite steep with lots of hills and flights of steps. For anyone with accessibility issues, the region offers a series of public elevators (ascenseurs publics) dotted around the various wards.
- Port Hercules is one of the most sought-after berths globally and you will need to book months in advance if you are looking for a slip during the high season.
- At peak times, it's worth visiting popular sites early. Shops and businesses don't tend to open until around 10am, so anytime before this tends to be relatively crowd-free.
- The closest airport to Monaco is Nice, complete with a dedicated private jet terminal. Monaco also has a number of heliports available that guests may take advantage of.
- When venturing through Monaco taxis are the best mode of transport, but can prove hard to come by during high season events.
With its A-lister appeal, rich arts and culture and array of world-class events, Monaco is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean . Therefore, we advise you to book your yacht charter well in advance of your trip to secure your perfect yacht on your preferred dates. If you leave it too late, the selection of yachts at your disposal will be reduced and you may not be able to explore the destinations you have your heart set on. Plus, finding dates when everyone in your charter party is available can be tricky; the longer you leave it, the more challenging it will be.
