Sailing clubs are a plenty in Toronto because we're lucky enough to have easy access to Lake Ontario. These clubs offer a safe place to moor your boat and almost all of them offer lessons . If you're new to the sport, one of the below clubs is a good place to start your journey.

Here are my top picks for sailing clubs in Toronto:

Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club  

Non-profit and volunteer-run sailing club, this club is located on three acres of land on Humber Bay along the north shore of Lake Ontario.  Although membership is required to use the club's fleet, one need not be a member to enter the club's Learn to Sail Program. 

Water Rats Sailing Club

This 200-member sailing and paddling club on Regatta Road is volunteer-run and a non-profit co-op. This club is more of a small boat club, keelboats and boats with cabins aren't allowed. Their membership and initiation fees are also lower than other clubs. 

Aquatic Park Sailing Club

Located within Tommy Thompson park, this sailing club is a self-described "boat self-help" and "urban wilderness sailing club" where members adopt a DIY attitude. There are no monthly bar and restaurant fees and the clubhouse is run on solar power. 

Toronto Island Sailing Club  

This sailing club is, you guessed it, right on Centre Island, west of the Toronto Island Marina on the north shore. Membership allows for complete access to the club's fleet. Members can take part in the club's lessons, clinics, and racing programs.

Mooredale Sailing Club  

This sailing club is just east of downtown, near Cherry Beach. Membership includes CYA (Canadian Yachting Association) certified beginner lessons to Level CANSail II. Members enjoy unlimited use of the club's sailing fleet.

Westwood Sailing Club

Located just next door to Mooredale, this club offer a wide variety of sailing courses, but full membership is a requirement. They're also a non-profit and it's not a requirement to own a boat to sail there. 

National Yacht Club

Opposite Billy Bishop Airport, this is more of a keelboat (bigger boat) club, but they also offer an adult learn to sail program for instruction in smaller, more responsive sailboat handling. Courses here are open to non-members.

Island Yacht Club 

From the people behind King West's Spoke Club is the Island Yacht Club on the Toronto Islands. For a pretty penny you have access to a full range of amenities including 140 docks, tennis courts and a swimming pool. They also run a sailing school. 

Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club

This east-side club near the Beaches has a pretty unique membership structure, so if you're interested in joining take a look at which type of membership works best for you. The club offers a licensed restaurant, patio and lounge.

Humber Bay Sailing Centre

Both a sailing club and school, this is a great place in Humber Bay Park to make new friends at the club, write your exam to get the Toronto Harbour License and take a course in basic keelboat cruising. 

St. James Town Sailing Club  

This sailing club is nestled amid the other sailing clubs beyond the port on Regatta Road. The club offers lessons to members only, but membership gets you unlimited access to the fleet. 

Port Credit Yacht Club

This sailing club is further west than most, but also boasts prime amenities like winter storage facilities and a mobile marine lift. They also offer lessons for everyone — no matter the skill level. 

Queen City Yacht Club

Self-described as "one of Toronto's oldest and friendliest sailing clubs", this sailing club on the Toronto Islands has plenty of opportunities for members to sail and make friends while they're at it during their Wednesday night racing series. They've even got a club magazine. 

The Royal Canadian Yacht Club

This is one wide-reaching sailing club. They have clubhouses for members in the  city and on the Toronto Islands. They also have programs for adults who are brand new to the sport that can be taken by non-members. 

Alexandra Yacht Club

Across from Billy Bishop airport, this sailing club boasts interconnected floating docks, swing moorings, Thursday night Race Nights, an "informal winter program" and Wi-Fi.

• Upon arrival all visiting yachts must register with Dock Staff at the Officer of the Day Station - located on the north side of the NYC Clubhouse
• Guests must provide a membership card from their Club for the current year
• Boats must not be left unattended for more than 12 hours

Have you ever wanted to be part of something exclusive? Well, there is a small handful of private Toronto clubs that give new meaning to the word.

Whether you're looking to enjoy a nightcap on a gorgeous rooftop terrace (on the regular), socialize, watch the game in a ritzy lounge or have fun on the water, these private clubs have it all.

But joining a members-only club isn't supposed to be easy, so you should expect to jump through a few hoops before you get in the door. Some require a special invite, while others ask for a pretty hefty initiation fee — but once you're in, it's smooth sailing from there with parties, cool amenities, and endless perks.

So without further ado, here are eight members-only clubs in Toronto and what you need to know before you can join them.

Price: Fees vary, but if you're under 27 and looking for an annual membership to the Soho House in Toronto it'll cost you $1,074 in 2023. If you're under this age but want to hit up every house they have around the world, it'll be $2,543 (plus a one-time registration fee of $480.25 that will be taken when you're accepted). If you're over 27, an annual membership will cost you $1,752 in Toronto and $5,085 for access to all their houses — but you can also opt for a quarterly membership that's cheaper.

Why You Need To Go: Set in the city's Entertainment District, Soho House has its own bars and club, including a rooftop one that offers incredible views. You do have to be recommended by two existing members to join, but once you're in, you have the ability to check out any of its other clubs around the world from New York to London. Plus, you can bring up to three guests at a time, book their members-only bedrooms, and access their gyms, spas, and events.

Price: Fees vary , but those under 25 can expect to pay $480 per year for a junior and student membership. There is also a $75 initiation fee, and annual land levies, which will get you access to their dining room, facilities, social events, and crew bank programs. If you're over 25 and are just looking for a social membership, you should expect to pay $512, plus a $100 initiation fee with the expectation that you'll need to spend at least $55 in their dining room each month. But fees go up for anyone looking to dock, whether you have a paddleboard, kayak, boat or any other type of vessel.

Price: Fees vary , but those under the age of 30 pay a one-time initiation fee of $5,500 with $2,370 in annual dues (plus tax) in 2023. If you're between the ages of 30 and 34 you can expect to pay $6,650 for initiation and $3,560 in annual dues, and if you're somewhere between 35 and 39 years old you can expect to pay $7,800 for initiation and $3,560 in annual dues.

Why You Need To Go: This 65,000-square-foot club used to be a chocolate factory . Now Verity is a women-only club that hosts plenty of networking events and boasts incredible amenities, from a full-service day spa and stunning cocktail bar called Secrette (think pink velvet everything) to its very own restaurant.

Price: Fees vary for the Granite Club, but those between 16 and 29 years old can expect to pay anywhere between $19,800 to $44,500 for an entrance fee and between $536 to $1,351 in annual dues starting July 1, 2023. The rates change according to age, so expect to pay even more than that the older you are. If you're between 30 and 69 years old, you're looking at an entrance fee of $49,350 and annual dues that fall somewhere between $2,735 and $4,055.

Why You Need To Go: This family, athletic, recreation, and social club has so much going on — from a full-service salon and barbershop to physio and massage therapy, aquatics, badminton, curling, tennis, skating, squash, and golf. The Granite Club offers different dining areas and event spaces, but there is a dress code, so don't expect to show up in ripped jeans, flip-flops, or short skirts, because they're definitely not allowed. You can also enjoy all the benefits of membership at their reciprocal clubs across the country and around the world.

Price: Fees vary , but full-time students and everyone under 32 years old have to pay an initiation fee of $1,500. Annual dues vary as well, as students pay $750, and anyone 32 years old and younger is expected to pay $1,300. But you can also opt for a trial membership for $117 per month and defer the initiation fee. Is your mom, dad, or grandparent a member already? In that case, your initiation fee gets discounted by 50%. If you're between the ages of 33 and 44 years old you can expect to pay a $2,500 initiation feed and $2,515 in annual dues for 2023.

Join the Fleet

Joining the Ideal 18 Fleet gives Members complete access to the Club-owned boats throughout the sailing season. This program is for both racers and cruisers looking for an opportunity to get out on the water without the stress of owning a boat. Members of the Ideal 18 fleet can book a boat for any race or simply head out for an adventure in the harbour with friends & family.

• Boat reservations will be based on submission date of the request. The number of boats available may be limited due to scheduled activities such as racing and programs.
• Walk-ins are welcome as long as boats are not previously reserved. A charter form will be submitted by the Sailing Office on behalf of the Member if a boat is available at that time.
• Booking an Ideal 18 costs $70 + HST for a day charter. Members may join the Ideal 18 fleet for $350 + HST to enjoy day charters for the season for no additional cost. Any sailor that charters an Ideal 18 five times in one season will automatically become a fleet member for 2021.
• If there are more teams than boats for a race night, we will use a random lottery to determine the selected teams and boat assignments.
• All interested racers must register for Thursday night racing at this link to receive updates and be eligible for that lottery draw.
• To join the lottery, one member of the team must submit a charter form, found here , by Wednesday at 5:00pm for racing the next day. All names will be entered in the lottery at this time and competitors will be sent a list of assigned boats to the selected teams along with any people remaining on a standby list.
• If you are unable to attend after receiving a boat assignment, the next team on the waitlist will be offered the boat that Thursday.

Boat owners often search for new crew for midweek racing, cruises, and regattas. Join the online crew bank to find a team and get out on the water!  Sailors that wish to be added to the RCYC Crew Bank may indicate their interest by signing up here . “Second homes often seem like great investments – something you’ll use frequently with family and friends while it appreciates in value,” says Steve Case, who is owner and chairman of Exclusive Resorts. “But what often happens is that you use it less than expected and are surprised by the expense and hassle of owning another property.”

Then there is hassle free. Exclusive Resorts helps eliminate such annoyances by providing members with an expert ambassador who acts as a travel planner for your family before you leave – getting to know you and what you enjoy and want in order to truly personalize your trip – and a personal concierge who helps handle all the details when you’re on-site at your destination. Basically, you get your own team to take the frustration out of the vacation.

“More than 60% of our current members and 40% of our new members are empty nesters,” CEO James Henderson says of the club’s 4,300 members (only 200 are admitted each year to maintain the quality of the residences and personalized service). “At this phase in their life, they’re travelling more often in a bigger group – kids, grandchildren, friends, nannies – and it can be overwhelming. They turn to Exclusive Resorts so they can spend less time planning their vacations and more time enjoying them.”

The way the club works is you pay a membership fee followed by annual dues correlated to how many days you want to travel that year (you can choose between 15 to 30 travel days annually, with most members travelling 20-plus days a year). Memberships start at US$195,000 for the 10-year plan, or $275,000 for the 30-year plan and are inheritable, meaning they can be passed down (consider it an investment in your family’s vacation experiences). The annual dues are $1,760 per plan day.

The bonus is that there’s no guessing what the prices will be because the rates remain constant and aren’t affected by market fluctuation or holiday demand. Exclusive Resorts says that its fixed-pricing model is nearly four times less expensive than booking comparable luxury hotels and villa rentals.

Really putting the “exclusive” in the offerings, Exclusive Resorts also offers the Experience Collection, which includes providing its members access to The World, the largest private residential yacht on Earth that has been circumnavigating the globe since 2002. The World’s itinerary this year – which is only available to its residents and Exclusive club members – features stops in New Zealand, Southeast Asia and South Africa.

Although Exclusive Resorts owns most of its residence portfolio, it also has relationships with world-class hotels and resorts. The new partnership with Rosewood gives members access to 12 properties including Mayakoba (which, by the way, is a favourite of Paulina Gretzky, according to her Instagram, when husband Dustin Johnson is competing with LIV Golf at neighbouring El Camaleon Golf Course).

As guests in one of Exclusive’s four luxury villas at Rosewood Mayakoba, we had access to all the amenities offered at the spectacular resort with the bonus of the five-star service provided by our personal concierges. These wizards not only took care of stocking our fridge and arranging our dinners, flight transfers and excursions, but were also just a text away to help with unexpected dilemmas (like how to connect our phone to the villa’s state-of-the-art stereo system – we know, you can eyeroll).

I can concur with Paulina that the resort is well worth choosing – it’s easily one of the prettiest I’ve stayed at (which is a high bar!). In addition to world-class golf, it sports Zapote Bar (No. 11 on North America’s 50 Best Bars 2023 list), beautiful pools, an adult-only beach area, the best Mexican breakfast at Casa del Lago, and luxurious Sense spa situated in a lush setting on its own island.

Our Exclusive concierge arranged transportation and guide for a day trip to the cenotes at Puerto Morelo, an in-residence massage that I enjoyed in the comfort of my poolside room, and a private chef Mexican dinner complete with bartender pouring our tequila drinks.
