FISHERMEN’S BASTION OF BUDAPEST Fischerbastei Budapest

FISHERMEN’S BASTION OF BUDAPEST

High up on the castle hill, where the fish market was situated in the Middle Ages, the Fishermen’s Bastion of Budapest towers over the city. The building owes its name to the fisherman’s guild for which the Bastion was built. In the Middle Ages, this guild was supposed to defend that part of the city wall. With its conical towers, the building is a real eye-catcher. Today, it’s a wonderful place to take in a view of the Danube and the district of Pest. The monument was built between 1895 and 1902.

SCHÖNBRUNN PALACE VIENNA Wien Schönbrunn mit A-ROSA erleben

SCHÖNBRUNN PALACE VIENNA

Schönbrunn Palace - The residence of the famous Empress Sisi has not only historical significance, but also a magnificent location and an opulent interior. Leopold I had had it built as a hunting lodge in the late 17th century. Half a century later, Maria Theresa had it expanded into a true Baroque palace. The living spaces of Sisi and Emperor Franz Joseph I, which have been preserved in their entirety, are particularly impressive. The adjoining palace garden, the palace theatre, the Viennese Neptune Fountain and the zoological garden are also worth a visit.

Bratislava Castle [Translate to English:] Pressburg Bratislava

Bratislava Castle

Bratislava Castle - The ‘Bratislava City Express’ takes you to Bratisavský Hrad – or Bratislava Castle – the landmark of Bratislava. Enjoy a sweeping view over the Danube from the 85-metre-high cliff. The city owes its name to its commissioner Count Wratislaw, who had the site built in the middle of the 17th century. A century later, Maria Theresa decided to renovate it for representational purposes. Did you know that the castle also features as the design on Slovak euro coins?

Prater Vienna Flussreise nach Wien

Prater Vienna

The Prater and the Ferris wheel - The Prater invites you to take a relaxed walk in the river landscape of the Danube. The spacious area is made up of idyllic meadows and forests. You will find the Wiener Riesenrad, a Ferris wheel, in the north-western part of the Prater. Enjoy Vienna from above and treat yourself and your nearest and dearest to a romantic evening dinner in one of the Ferris wheel’s luxurious gondolas. Every quarter of an hour, you will be served with new delicacies on ground level before you are lifted into the air again. Perfect for wedding days, those newly in love or happy couples.

Passau is the ideal starting point for a river cruise on the Danube. Its location on the border with Austria makes it just a stone's throw from here to Germany's southern neighbors. On a Danube cruise from Passau to Budapest, you will cross three countries and get to know some of the most beautiful and historic cities and landscapes in Central Europe. Experience stunning architecture from different centuries in Budapest and Vienna. Immerse yourself in the wonderful world of Baroque in the historic center of Passau and Melk Abbey. City Highlights

The oldest city in the Netherlands exudes authentic Dutch flair with its gabled houses, small cheese shops and delicacies on the Grote Markt. Yesterday and today go hand in hand in the narrow streets. A visit to the Gothic Sint-Stevenskerk, including its crypt, and a stroll down Lange Hezelstraat shopping street should therefore be on your sightseeing itinerary. A freshly baked kibbeling in the wintry Kronenburgerpark is the perfect place to recover afterwards.

You should definitely take advantage of the stopover in Utrecht to see this beautiful Dutch city at your leisure. Whether you visit the famous Central Museum of Ancient and Modern Art or prefer to discover the provincial capital from the water on a relaxing canal cruise, you'll be amazed by the historic architecture and the many lovingly restored houses. The city's symbol, the 112-meter-high Utrecht Cathedral, towers majestically above the city center. Built between 1321 and 1382, it is the oldest and tallest church tower in the Netherlands. If you climb the 465 steps, you will be rewarded with a fantastic view. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, take a pleasant stroll through the alleys and typical Dutch courtyards that Utrecht is known for. Or how about a visit to the colorful flower market? Utrecht is always worth a visit.

The port city of Rotterdam is located in the Netherlands and is one of the most interesting places in the world. Modern architecture plays a major role here. The impressive sights include the horseshoe-shaped market hall with its huge range of goods and colorful crowds. Historic ships can be admired in the old harbor with the striking white house. The Witte de With street is a great place to stroll, store and party. The futuristic-looking central station, the Tüte, also invites pub crawls and shopping.

Emmerich is located on the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia and has a beautiful Rhine bridge and the Eltenberg, the local mountain. There is also a Rhine promenade for walking. If you want to learn more about the art of coffee, you can visit the Museum of Coffee Technology, which is famous in the town of Emmrich. Nearby is the town of Kleve, which is also well worth a visit with its swan castle, zoo and historic gardens.

Maastricht is a university city in the extreme south of the Netherlands. The city is characterized by its medieval architecture and vibrant cultural scene. In the cobbled old town you will find the Gothic St. John's Church  and the Romanesque St. Servatius Basilica with an important collection of sacred art. On the banks of the Meuse River, which flows through the city center, stands the futuristic Bonnefanten Museum of Fine Arts.

Nearby Roermond is the city of Venlo, which, with 101,984 residents, has almost twice the population of its neighboring city. The small stores in the center are perfect for a day of shopping. If you are looking for art and culture, you should visit the Limburgs Museum, which tells a lot about the Limburg people and culture. Another point of reference is the Oude Markt in the center of Venlo, where you can find many restaurants, which are especially recommended if you are in the mood for a delicious wine in sunny Holland.

Description and information on river cruises in the Netherlands

This river cruise through the Netherlands and Belgium will take you to three of the largest metropolises in the two Benelux countries. From Düsseldorf you will first travel downstream to Amsterdam. The charm of Holland's largest city lies in its unique ring of canals, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its historical significance. Discover the city's many narrow and crooked historic buildings by the water on a walk, bike ride or boat tour. From Amsterdam, travel on to Antwerp. Flanders' bustling metropolis combines history and modernity more harmoniously than almost any other city in Europe. Centuries-old buildings such as the Church of Our Lady, the Castle of Steen and the beautiful houses on the Grote Markt are combined here with many examples of modern architecture, such as the Museum aan het Stroom. Here, old Flemish masters meet a very lively contemporary art scene in the city's art museums. And don't forget to sample one of the hundreds of beers in Antwerp. Your river cruise through the Netherlands and Belgium ends in modern Rotterdam. At the mouth of the Rhine River in the North Sea, you will not only experience Europe's largest port, but also ultra-modern architecture and a very interesting gastronomic offer.

On this river cruise from Düsseldorf, you will be introduced to Belgium's two largest and most famous cities, Antwerp and Brussels. The first stop on the river cruise is Antwerp, where history and modernity meet in concentrated form. With the Church of Our Lady, the Castle of Stone, the houses on the Grote Markt and numerous other magnificent buildings, the old town of the Flemish metropolis is one of the most beautiful historic centers in Europe. Antwerp is one of the most dynamic metropolises in Western Europe, where time has not stood still. Europe's second largest port, the world's largest diamond trading center and a vibrant art and fashion scene make Antwerp a hotspot of modernity. The journey continues to Brussels - the capital of both Belgium and Europe. Brussels also has a beautifully preserved historic center, with the magnificent Grand Place and medieval town hall at its heart. A visit to Brussels includes a tour of the most important European political institutions. And of course, don't miss the chance to taste a chocolate or two at one of Brussels' world-famous chocolatiers. On the way back to Düsseldorf you will visit Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands. The gabled houses and small stores exude a very special Dutch charm.

On this river cruise through the Netherlands, immerse yourself in some of the country's oldest and most beautiful cities. The first stop on the cruise is Nijmegen, the oldest city in the country. The main sights of Nijmegen are the Stevenskerk and the market square with the Boterwaag, the Sint-Stevenspoortje and numerous beautiful mansions. From Nijmegen you drive across the Meuse River to Maastricht, the southernmost city in the Netherlands. Maastricht is not only known for its beautifully preserved city center with the Romanesque Saint Servatius Basilica and Gothic Saint John's Church, but is also popular for its southern flair. Downstream on the Meuse, the trip continues through Roermond, with its many boutiques and quaint cafes, to Venlo, where you must have seen the Old Town Hall and the Limburgs Museum. Children will love spending their day in Venlo at Toverland amusement park or Klein Zwitserland play park. Via the old fortified town of Gorinchem, continue your river cruise to Dordrecht - one of the oldest cities in Holland - which, with its many waterways, exudes the typical charm of the country. Visit the Grote Kerk, the acclaimed collection of paintings in the Dordrecht Museum and the Augustinian monastery Het Hof. Your journey across the Rhine and Meuse rivers ends in Arnhem, which is best known as a museum town. Here you can choose from the wine museum, the water museum and the open-air museum.

This river cruise through the Netherlands and Belgium is a voyage of discovery to some of the most beautiful cities in the two Benelux countries. From Düsseldorf you will travel to Amsterdam, where you can enjoy the unique charm of Holland's largest city along the canals. The mix of dozens of small canals, hundreds of bridges and countless leaning houses is what makes Amsterdam such a special city. Amsterdam's art and shopping scene are also among the best in Europe. Then you will be introduced to Hoorn, a typical Dutch coastal town on the shores of the IJsselmeer. In this enchanting port city, you'll breathe in the flair of the Golden Age and experience maritime history at every turn. Set off from Hoorn on a sailboat or take a trip on a steam train. From Hoorn travel on to Rotterdam, Holland's largest port city, where you can also experience Europe's largest port. A boat trip along the miles of quays is a very special experience. The next port of call is Ghent. In the Flemish university city, you will hardly be able to decide what to do first: a visit to the imposing Castle of the Counts, the majestic Saint Bavo Cathedral or the picturesque Belfry. Or would you rather stroll along the waterfront along Graslei and Korenlei? Ghent's medieval city center is without a doubt one of the most beautiful old towns in Europe. During your next stop in Antwerp, you can also visit numerous medieval sights. However, Antwerp is also a vibrant modern city with an extremely lively fashion and art scene. Your river cruise through the Netherlands and Belgium ends in Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands.

The starting point for a river cruise to the Netherlands is the state capital Düsseldorf in North Rhine-Westphalia. Thanks to its excellent connections to the freeway network, major airport and important train station, Düsseldorf is easy to reach from all over Germany. The team at VIVA Cruises is happy to help all guests plan their trip to Düsseldorf.

Incredible Danube Cruise on the Swarovski Kristallschiff

When we checked into Hotel Konig we inquired about the River Cruises which can be booked at the office directly across the road from the hotel. She recommended either the 45 minute cruise or the 2 hour cruise on the Kristallschiff and gave us a 7% discount coupon for it. Since it was too early to check in properly, we decided on the two hour cruise. The cost of the cruise was 15.50 euro each and 7% off that price. It was worth every penny. The Kristallschiff is incredible, from the Swarovski crystal staircase to the massive Swarovski crystal chandeliers! Everywhere we looked there seemed to be crystals. The boat has a nice menu with full meals, snacks, drinks or ice cream. The boat had three decks. We went to the top just for a few minutes to get a few pictures but it was very windy and no place to sit. There are great views and comfortable seating on the lower two decks. We love Swarovski and have visited Crystal World in Wattens, Austria several times, so I was excited to see there was a Swarovski store onboard. With 20% off, I got a great buy on several beautiful bracelets. If you are planning a trip to Passau, Germany, take a river cruise. It's wonderful!

riverboat cruise passau

I took a combination bus, boat tour from the Czech Republic. The river cruise was 5 hours, weather was initially quite cold and windy, but with a warm coat I was one of very few who sat on the top deck to enjoy the view. The rest was below deck in the warmth and comfort of cushioned seats and more extensive menu. Sat on the port/left side to enjoy the view, but really it did not matter as the top deck was not crowded. Seats are plastic and cold, tables flimsy, but I was there for the view not comfort. A fast waiter took care of everyone efficiently, I had a few wine spritzers and few hot coffees, for the main meal, a schnitzel, I joined the others below. An announcement in German explained the occasional sites. Most of the cruise is through a forested valley, not much to see except occasional small town, ruin, 1 larger castle. Nothing spectacular, however very relaxing and pleasant. The boat ran 30 minutes late because of the 3 locks along the way, so have a leeway for your itinerary. Arrived in Linz, very close to center of the city, few minutes walk.

riverboat cruise passau

In June we took the trip from Linz to Passau. For the whole trip we were seating on the top deck. Marvellous Danube river was so beautiful hence neither hot sun at the beginning nor later cold evening wing were not able to force us to hide downstairs in the worm restaurant. Our new good friend Said brought us beer and sausages. We love everything about this trip and will be happy to repat it one day. The communication via email with the company was good and so our booking was done easy in advance. Thanks. A & T from SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

riverboat cruise passau

We took the boat from Passau to Linz. It was a nice way to go from one city to the other. Very nice views. Restful. The cost was 27€ per person. Food is served on board. It was good. We got off in Linz but the boat returns to Passau. If you must return to Passau, take the train. A return trip would be too much.

Took the “service” boat upstream from Linz to Passau in Germany. I was “blown away” by everything this company offered. I am averse to long river cruises with organised trips and overnight on a boat! So this offered me the perfect way to cruise the Danube for six and a half hours on a lovely boat which had a large top sun-deck and also a restaurant deck below. I got on at Linz about 14:00 and arrived in Passau just after 20:00. I was served a beer soon after I boarded and also got a fantastic two-course dinner later, both of which I paid for. This large boat goes up stream against the Danube flow and also through four locks, which surprised me. The staff were all very pleasant although their English was sparse we managed to communicate and as I was taking luggage it was stowed safely by the bar, an area always staffed! It was a attractive trip with lots of forts and castles and even beaches with people swimming! This boat serves the local small towns so calls at about four I think, so always something going on. So how much was this six hour trip? €46 including the meal and drinks....that’s what I call a bargain!! They also do trips from Vienna with overnights in a hotel or a three day weekend trip from Passau to Vienna and back by train for €299! I highly recommend this trip which covers the Danube without taking too much time from your holiday.

Danube River Cruise: Budapest to Passau

  • December 4, 2023
  • Jack Baumann

riverboat cruise passau

The Danube River, often hailed as “Europe’s Main Street,” winds through the heart of the continent, offering an unrivaled passage through captivating landscapes and centuries of history.

Embarking on a river cruise from along the Danube is an odyssey that intertwines cultural richness, scenic wonders, and a profound sense of tranquility.

The Popular Route

There are many different ways to cruise the Danube, but the most common route, which I would recommend myself, would be the 8 day/7 night Budapest to Passau.

A Danube River cruise from Budapest to Passau isn’t just a voyage; it’s a passage through time, culture, and natural beauty. It’s a mosaic of experiences – from the melodies of classical music and aroma of freshly baked strudel to the embrace of medieval architecture and stunning landscapes, enjoy the tranquility of cruising along one of Europe’s most legendary waterways.

From the cultural richness of Budapest to the quaint charm of Passau, this voyage along the Danube epitomizes the essence of European allure, leaving travelers with an indelible sense of wonder and a treasure trove of unforgettable moments.

This is also a great route because it mixes in big cities like Budapest, Slovakia, and Vienna, with the quaint villages and countryside of Austria and Southern Germany.

The stops are also lined up so you get the big cities first and then a more laid back rural experience on the back end, or vice versa if do this in reverse, Passau to Budapest. You also get the benefit of seeing three capital cities on this itinerary which is an interesting contrast.

How River Cruises Work

For those that haven’t been on a river cruise, you’ll love it! I’m a younger man in my late thirties, so I was skeptical thinking a river cruise is just for “old folks”, but that just isn’t true.

European river cruises are pretty awesome. River cruises in general are so much more preferable to the big ocean liners that you see in the Caribbean in my opinion.

Your floating hotel is small, often less than 200 passengers, making getting around the ship much more manageable. All meals are included, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and let me tell you the good cruise companies know how to treat. The food is absolutely first class, and by the end you definitely feel like you ate your money’s worth.

Activities and daily tours are also included in most river cruise packages. This makes it easy as you don’t have to think about what you’ll want to see and do, the local guides have it covered. And, if you decide you want to just relax and shop you can opt out of the daily tour and do the town on your own. The flexibility is great!

Budapest: The Embarkation Point

The journey commences in Budapest, the stunning capital of Hungary, where the Danube splits the city into two distinct halves – Buda and Pest.

As the ship sets sail, guests are treated to panoramic views of Budapest’s iconic landmarks: the majestic Buda Castle, the imposing Parliament building, and the striking Chain Bridge illuminated in the evening’s glow.

Typically, cruises will often have a short night cruise through the city. The Hungarian Parliament Building is all lit up which is one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen!

Vienna, the capital of Austria, exudes imperial grandeur fused with artistic and musical richness. Known for its stunning architecture, including the opulent Schönbrunn Palace and the majestic Hofburg Imperial Palace, Vienna captivates visitors with its historical charm.

This cultural epicenter boasts a vibrant arts scene, classical music concerts, and captivating operas. Strolling through its charming streets adorned with coffee houses, experiencing the aroma of freshly baked pastries, and exploring its world-class museums make Vienna an enchanting destination.

As the ship glides along the river, passengers are greeted by a tapestry of landscapes that evolve from the lush Hungarian countryside to the growing urban center of Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. This compact city boasts a captivating blend of medieval history and modern vibrancy.

The charming Old Town, with its cobblestone streets and pastel-colored buildings, invites exploration of historic squares, picturesque courtyards, delightful cafes and iconic landmarks like Bratislava Castle.

Tranquil Landscapes and Historic Towns

The voyage continues into rural Austria, a land steeped in culture and architectural splendor. Quaint towns with their cobblestone streets and medieval charm, invite exploration of historic squares and picturesque castles.

Passengers revel in the scenic beauty of the Wachau Valley, adorned with terraced vineyards, rolling hills, and the captivating Melk Abbey perched high above the river.

The quaint town of Dürnstein (pictured above), known for its blue church tower and rich history, offers a delightful stop to savor local wines and explore its cobblestone streets.

Linz and Passau: Disembarkation

Continuing through Austria is a stop at Linz. Blending historic charm with modern art and technology, Lenz features the Hauptplatz and cutting-edge art at the Ars Electronica Center, as well as stunning views from the top of Pöstlingbergbahn Bergstation overlooking the entire city.

And then, as the voyage navigates into southern Germany to near its end, Passau welcomes travelers with its baroque architecture and the convergence of three rivers – the Danube, Inn, and Ilz. Visitors can explore its historic old town, stroll along the riverbanks, and indulge in the town’s rich cultural heritage, making it a delightful stop on a Danube River cruise.

The Onboard Experience

Beyond the captivating destinations, the river cruise experience itself is typically one of luxury and comfort.

Passengers indulge in gourmet cuisine, relax on panoramic sun decks, and enjoy enriching onboard activities such as wine tastings, live performances, and lectures that delve into the history and culture of the regions visited.

  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

Let’s find your dream river cruise.

Choose a river.

Moscow as a city has been around since 1147. No visit to this bustling 21st century city is complete without the opulence of its most recognisable landmarks. Most cruises allow at least 3 days in Moscow to allow your own pace and independent discovery. Shuttle bus services between the ship and the centre are available on most itineraries.

polaroid style photo St Basils Cathederal, Moscow St Basil’s Cathedral with its multi coloured domes dominates the western end of Red Square. On your walk through Red Square to or from a visit to Lenin’s tomb cements in the mind the influence of the more modern past and the beginnings of Soviet Russia.

The best way to explore Moscow is by using the world famous Metro stations, which are a discovery in themselves. Where else in the world is the metropolitan underground transit system adorned with crystal chandeliers and artwork. You’ll never view a tube journey the same again.

Visit the Kremlin, a self contained 15th century city with palaces, armouries, 15th and 17th century cathedrals and a Medieval fortress. A visit to the Kremlin includes a tour of the Armouries museum home to treasures such as the Tsar’s coronation robes and the famous Fabergé eggs.
