Sea Ray 390 Sundancer Review

  • By Jay Coyle
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

Three-ninety seems a lucky number for Sea Ray . Few yachts in the builder’s history have been as successful as the Sea Ray 390 Express Cruiser, built from 1984 to 1991. It was one of the first big express designs, and helped blaze a trail that others would follow. It has been more than a decade of change in boating, but the Sea Ray 390 (39 feet, give or take a few inches) is still a magic number-Sea Ray’s latest Sundancer is on target.

Sea Ray builds all sorts of boats, but the Sundancer brand is perhaps the most well known. In Sea Ray-speak, the company no longer builds a 390 Express Cruiser, since the mid-cabin layout of the Sundancer line has dominated customer interest. Without splitting hairs, I would suggest that it has dominated the “express market”, as well.

Sea Ray fans will find the 390’s features familiar, and those new to the marque will likely be impressed. She is far more sophisticated than her distant sister, yet she shares proportions that have always made sense to me. Though the 390 is midsize in today’s market, she is large enough for a couple to cruise comfortably but not so large she will be a handful dockside when it comes time to clean up.

The Sea Ray 390 replaces the 380 and fits between the 360 and the 420 in Sea Ray’s Sundancer lineup. Like the 420, she displays Sea Ray’s new look, which all in the family will eventually share. Her deck lines balance her sweeping reverse sheer, which peaks amidships and drops aft, incorporating an integral swim platform. She is pleasantly free of hull graphics-her optional dark-blue hull and contrasting white deck define her lines. All are capped by a forward-raking arch or, as was the case with our test boat, an integral arch/hardtop. Both complement her slightly aggressive posture.

The Sea Ray 390’s helm design incorporates many of the features Sea Ray has developed to consolidate and simplify vessel operation. The automotive-inspired console, designed to accommodate the Sea Ray Navigator system, leaves everything within reach. The system’s 10.4-inch, sunlight-viewable touch-screen LCD conveys charting and navigation information in a user-friendly format. The 390 is also equipped with Mercury Marine’s SmartCraft electronic information system. The helm-mounted control head coordinates and displays data from a number of sources. On our test boat, data included engine vitals, fuel burn, range, navigation information, depth, and air and seawater temperature.

The 390 I tested was fitted with a pair of 370 hp MerCruiser 8.1S Horizon gas engines with ZF V-drives. This shaft-line configuration keeps weight aft, which benefits performance and maximizes interior accommodation space, making the mid-cabin layout possible. The cockpit sole lifts with the push of a button, allowing good access to the engine compartment.

Acceleration to maximum speed took 15 seconds; I recorded 30.2 knots. The SmartCraft electronics indicated 4700 rpm with a total fuel burn of 60.3 gallons per hour. At 3900 rpm, I noted a speed of 23.9 knots and a fuel burn of 39.1 gallons per hour.

The fuel-burn figures tell the story. For a boat of this size and type, gas power is fine if you don’t wander far. Diesel power would be a wise choice for more serious cruising. Sea Ray offers a Cummins package, and I inspected the first installation in the 390 diesel prototype. While data is not yet available, it seems a good match, and I would expect solid performance.

At speed, the 390 has excellent response and feel. Though the Intracoastal Waterway offered little challenge, my sense is that she will deliver the dry, comfortable ride typical of Sea Ray designs. Her 19-degree transom deadrise is appropriate for her size and service. Driving position (standing, leaning or sitting) is excellent thanks to an adjustable steering wheel and an adjustable helm seat, which has a flip-up bolster.

I toured the Merritt Island, Florida , production line where the Sea Ray 390 is built alongside the 360 and 420. I have inspected a number of Sea Ray facilities over the years, and I have always been impressed by the company’s process and people. When I asked about the fastening of the hull-deck joint, I was referred to a fellow on the line who had been handling the task for 20 years. Such tenure is rare in production boatbuilding, but it seems the norm at Sea Ray.

The hull of the Sea Ray 390 is a handlaid blend of fiberglass woven roving, stitched reinforcements and mat. Polyester resin is used for general lamination, while a vinylester skin coat reduces the chance of blistering. Longitudinal stringers are molded fiberglass, and bulkheads are plywood; all are glassed in place. Balsa coring stiffens the cockpit sole and foredeck. Exterior fit and finish are excellent, a reflection of Sea Ray’s tooling, which is produced using a five-axis mill capable of tolerances within thousandths of an inch.

The cockpit of the Sea Ray 390 follows the Sundancer theme with an open seating area aft for entertaining dockside or lounging while under way. The swim platform is steps away, as is a wet bar fitted with a sink, cooler stowage and an icemaker (a refrigerator in place of the icemaker is optional). The helm has bench-style companion seating for two. While the hardtop’s hatch and the windshield’s vent are effective, an air-conditioning duct at the helm would be useful in the South Florida summer. The side decks are easy to navigate, and the foredeck is designed to accommodate a sunpad, which is perfect for lounging.

If you haven’t inspected a Sea Ray interior lately, you might be surprised. The fabric, wood veneer and tambour finishes of the past have been replaced with a durable synthetic faux-wood finish. Edges of doors and drawers are trimmed with wood. The design is so well executed I confess that the first time I saw it I thought it was the real thing. In terms of style, the rich wood tone, high-quality soft goods, and upscale fixtures and hardware are more refined than those that have come before. Because of this, I suspect the 390’s look will have a longer shelf life.

The cabin is arranged with a settee that converts to a double berth, and a table that stows out of the way forward. An entertainment system includes a 20-inch flat-screen TV that pulls out, revealing a stowage area for media-very clever. The galley is outfitted with a microwave oven, a two-burner cooktop and an under-counter dual-voltage refrigerator and a separate freezer. The mid-cabin, abaft the entryway, serves as a seating area by day and a double berth by night. The forward cabin has a full-size berth with an innerspring mattress. A 13-inch TV/DVD player is standard. The dual-access head compartment and separate shower compartment make sense on a boat with a single head. Both areas are finished in molded fiberglass.

My bet is that Sea Ray has hit another home run. Whether you intend to spend a day coasting the waterway or a week wandering the Bahamas, the Sea Ray 390 seems a perfect fit.

Sea Ray 390: Social Director

  • By Kevin Falvey
  • Updated: February 1, 2003

Pull up the hatch in the salon sole aboard Sea Ray’s 390 Motor Yacht and climb down into the engine compartment. All the seacocks are easy to see, identify, and get to. You can close any valve quickly and without reaching under a hot engine. What’s more, Sea Ray realizes that raw-water intake hoses rarely blow at the dock-especially aboard a boat designed for extended cruising. So what does all this have to do with you, you ask? Simply put, basic serviceability is as built into the 390 Motor Yacht as the wetbar, the standard hardtop, or the bulwarks surrounding the aft deck.

MOUNT UP. The traditional motoryacht helm is positioned on a flying bridge several steps above the aft deck. This has several advantages: It reduces windage, provides better visibility looking aft, and in my opinion, gives a boat a better-looking profile. The problem with this arrangement is that it makes for a lonely captain. While your passengers are enjoying one another’s company out of the weather and within arm’s reach of the wetbar, you’re up on the bridgedeck, dodging spray and wondering what all that laughter bubbling up from below is about.

Like Cruisers Yachts 4050 ($391,940 powered like our test boat), the 390 Motor Yacht breaks with tradition and solves both problems by putting the helm and aft deck on the same level. This means you drive from behind a full-size windshield, under a protective hardtop. Best of all, you’ll know for sure when the jokes are at your expense. Think of an express cruiser’s cockpit and helm topping a motoryacht’s cavernous belowdecks accommodations. Both Sea Ray and Cruisers Yachts are at the forefront of this new motoryacht design edict. Other manufacturers are sure to follow.

As for my opinion of the traditional layout versus the new hybrid boat typified by the 390 Motor Yacht, let me say that Sea Ray took great pains at the drawing board to sweeten the 390 Motor Yacht’s lines. Its raked stem, sporty hardtop supported by pillars that resemble a radar arch, and the elliptical shape of its windows aid in visually stretching the boat. From up close or across the harbor, it doesn’t look like a refrigerator lying on its side. If not sleek, these design elements give the 390 Motor Yacht a powerful, athletic profile.

But don’t let its aerodynamic profile and express cruiser deck arrangement deceive you. The 390 Motor Yacht is intended more for cruising comfort than sporty performance. Still, it provides enough oomph to run inlets with confidence. Turn the key and shift into gear. The boat rises to plane without exceeding five degrees of inclination. Of course, from the height of this helm, you’re not likely to lose visibility over the bow (although we’ve tested some boats that pushed the inclinometer’s bubble to eight!). Five degrees is the boat’s natural running angle-without tabs-at cruising speed. You’ll top 30 mph with the levers pinned to the helm. The twin 370-hp MerCruiser 8.1S Horizon engines provide enough punch so that you accelerate with authority-although you’ll never “jump.” Minimum plane, achieved with trim tabs fully deployed, occurs at 15 mph. Get caught in a blow, and you won’t have to bang your way back to the dock to stay in control. Loop around, parallel your wake, and come to a stop. Laying beam-to, our own wake revealed that the 390 Motor Yacht rolls without undue snap. Best economy? I found it at 3500 rpm, where speed is 21.8 mph and the boat burns 34.4 gph for a range of 171 miles.

This test boat exhibited excess vibration underway, so much so that I could see the hardtop and bowrail shivering. Sea Ray said it was still dialing in the props and that the problem would be corrected in future models. Watch for it during your test drive.

THE OUTSIDERS. Weather boards-removable, clumsy-to-handle-and-store panels used to provide weather protection for the aft deck of a traditional motoryacht-are thankfully absent aboard the 390 Motor Yacht. Instead, thigh-high bulwarks ring this area. You can seal out the rain with clear canvas between these and the hardtop. These bulwarks also provide stowage. Try that with tubing and a teak caprail. Clear acrylic doors to port and starboard provide additional protection and access to the sidedecks and bow. These swing on full-length hinges secured by bolts and barrel nuts. The installation is rugged and looks good. A boarding gate, consisting of a cable strung between the rail and the bulwarks, is outside each of these doors. But a hinged or telescoping section of railing would make it more secure.

There’s a large wetbar on the aft deck. It has a sturdy grabrail and a big stowage compartment below. The icemaker is standard. A fitting allows you to plug a blender into the 110-volt outlet inside the cabinet and close the door without crimping the power cord.

INSIDE STRAIGHT. Belowdecks, the 390 Motor Yacht is a waterborne getaway for long weekends. Set on two levels-the galley, forward stateroom, and aft master stateroom are “down”-it’s beautifully detailed. The fiberglass headliner is inset with a burled-wood medallion. More burl tops the movable table. Wood-laminate cabinets, faux-granite countertops, lots of natural light, and Ultraleather upholstery complement plush carpeting (runners are standard) and designer door, light, and sink fixtures.

The master stateroom features an innerspring mattress, two illuminated hanging lockers, and a private head, which is laid out in three sections. The sink and vanity are open to the stateroom. On either side of the vanity is a door-open one and find the commode, open the other and find the shower. The window on the aft bulkhead can be kicked out to serve as an emergency exit.

The forward stateroom’s arrangement entails two overlapping quarter berths. This allows you to separate the kids or, by using the supplied filler, make a double berth when a couple is aboard. A hatch here provides access to the rode locker. Other manufacturers have neglected this necessity. A door provides private access to the day head.

The galley is fully equipped. Most notable are the steps leading down to it. Lift them up: Inside is a huge utility room where big items will stow easily. Order the optional washer/dryer ($2,333) and this is where it lives.

The Highs : Spectacular! A three-section head! Maintenance made easy thanks to sensible placement of fixtures and equipment. Details: barrel nuts, cable ports, and burled-wood medallions abound.

The Lows : Get a real boarding gate. I wouldn’t want to slam against a cable and a clip. Ground connections in the bilge were unsealed-and underwater. Ask about the props.

EXTRA POINT: The 390 Motor Yacht’s bow thruster runs off of a dedicated 24-volt battery bank, which reduces amperage draw and ensures that the starting and house banks aren’t drawn down by the thruster.

Description

"Turn Key" for a weekender, live aboard or cruising/Looping. Owner says she purrs at slow cruise for lower fuel consumption but loves to get up and go on-plane as the mood (or weather!) strikes.

She comes with all bedding, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans. Original Sea Ray linens and comforter in Master and guest cabins. Ample storage located throughout the forward, aft cabins, galley, salon, cockpit, and transom.

Archimedes II's owner recently crossed their wake in Portsmouth, VA and prepped the boat for her next owner. She has spent a majority of her life in a fresh water covered slip and her condition reflects the same. You will not be disappointed in her condition or performance.

She also includes a high field dinghy and sea wise davit only a year old!

She just ran down the east coast to Savannah and performed beautifully. Cruising speed is about 24mph at 2250 RPM's. She handles the chop of running outside as well as she does the inland waterways.

Walk through.

As you approach Archimedes II from the stern you will find fiberglass molded stairs that lead up to the climate controlled aft deck. Unlike other aft cabin boats the helm aft deck and side decks are all on one level. There are glass doors that lead out each side of the aft deck to the bow. On the aft deck is a wet bar and fridge. The helm is equipped with autopilot, radar, and a Raymarine chart plotter. She even has Cummins cruise control, a hard top, and real windshield.

To the left of the helm you will find the companionway leading down a few stairs into the salon. The salon has 2 couches flanking either side. The starboard couch pulls out to give a little more space for a guest to sleep. The access to the engine room is found in the salon floor as well. The galley is located forward of the salon on the starboard side. She has a freezer over the fridge configuration, a electric. cooktop, convection microwave oven, and a single sink. Under the stairs between the salon and galley you will find a washer/dryer combo unit.

Continuing forward you find the day head, that is shared with the forward cabin, located on the port side. The forward cabin has a V berth configuration. However, the starboard bunk will pull out to a double berth enabling this cabin to sleep 3 guests.

As you pass back through the salon towards the aft you will find the entrance to the master on the port side of the boat. The master boasts a walk around queen size berth and plenty of storage with an en suite head and shower.

With the gas package, expect a peppy performance. We achieved a top speed of 25 knots and a cruising speed of around 20 knots. Best of all, the 390 is quiet, especially on the helm deck. The highest decibel reading we got was 79 at wide open throttle.

  4. Sea Ray 390 Express Cruiser

With gasoline engines, the boat cruises at 17 knots, reaches a top speed of around 27 knots and guzzles fuel at a rate of 35 gallons per hour (at cruise speed). Whatever powerplant you opt for, the twin engines are housed under the helm seats.

The SmartCraft electronics indicated 4700 rpm with a total fuel burn of 60.3 gallons per hour. At 3900 rpm, I noted a speed of 23.9 knots and a fuel burn of 39.1 gallons per hour. The fuel-burn figures tell the story. For a boat of this size and type, gas power is fine if you don't wander far.

Posts: 11. We have a 2005 Sea Ray 390 Motor Yacht with the same engines and just completed the Great Loop on 4/13/23. For us, it was the perfect boat, lots of room, fast when you want, and reasonable fuel economy at trawler speeds. At 1000 rpm we burn 3.4 gph and travel at 8.6 mph. Like most loopers, we traveled at trawler speeds 90+% of the time.

  13. Feel The Burn: The Fuel Consumption Equation

Let's look at some actual numbers from a full-displacement trawler in the 40- to 50-foot range: 7.5 knots @ 3 GPH = 2.5 nMPG. If we push for a little more speed the fuel burn changes: 9 knots @ 11 GPH = 0.8 nMPG. Notice that by slowing down 1.5 knots, this boat increases its fuel economy almost 300%.

Does anyone have direct experience of the fuel burn with the 390 DA with gas powered engines? I am looking to pay around $250 - 280K for a nice one, and I think the $50K or so that I would save would buy a heck of a lot of gasoline. Any feedback and guidance would be much appreciated! :smt001 Jul 2, 2007 #2 H HokiesFan New Member Nov 10, 2006 50
