We went here for a wedding and reception for one of my good friends. I didn't really have any expectations, good or bad. The club is right on the water and was in a beautiful location. My biggest disappointment was the service by the management. My friend was a bit frazzled, as brides generally are. The manager walked up to her while she was getting ready to tell her to make sure her guests walk through the bar area quietly and respectfully. I thought it was an odd request to make of the bride who was waiting upstairs to make her entrance. Whatever... She followed it by an off comment about the minister. I was pretty shocked. Shocked enough that it took a minute to realize that she actually said it. Later One of the guests was pooed on by a seagull and had to ask her three times for the bathroom. She ignored him the first two times and then snatched his suit coat out of his hands and said she would take care of it. It was returned with a comment about him trying not to be a jerk anymore. I'm not sure if this is common place for the club but I'm certain we would not use this venue nor suggest anyone else try. If the service wasn't bad enough, the kitchen was terrible. We were the third table excused to eat and the buffet was empty. They couldn't keep up with the guests. We finally got our food and the only edible food were the mashed potatoes. The steak had a spoiled taste and was similar in texture to shoe leather. The fish was thin and over cooked. I watched nearly every guest push the meat to the side of their plates. The servers didn't even ask how the food was. I think the knew. Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend eating here much less planning an important event such as a wedding.

grosse ile yacht club fireworks

Poor service, cold food, angry staff, and rude members. Need I say more. If you are thinking about having a wedding here just move on. If you are thinking about becomming a member here beware...they need membership money badly and will say whatever they need to to get you to join.

Photo of Rikki W.

It's very frustrating to have a great experience spoiled over a petty dispute that most likely occurred because of a lack of communication. If I had to do it all over again I would have my wedding at the Dearborn Inn, which is a little less expensive and they include a honeymoon room for the night and also the champagne for toasting.

Photo of Susan M.

We had my daughters baby shower in the upstairs of the club. It was a gorgeous setting with the water view. It was a brunch and food was fabulous and the service could not have been better. The Manager was absolutely the best and made sure that everything was exactly the way that we had requested. Many of the out of town guests went down to the beautiful bar area after the shower for a few cocktails and were made to feel very welcomed and treated with the utmost respect. I would definitely recommend GIYC for any events.

WOW, June is here and summer is underway!
J U N E 2 0 1 3
By now, I’m sure everyone has noticed the aircraft carrier parked in
the harbor. At least that is what it seems like! What an amazing parking
job by that crew. The majority of the work on the new sea wall will
be complete by the time this article goes out to our membership. I
would just like to say thank you to our membership for being so patient
during this construction. Some members have been impacted
more than others but all have been very accommodating while our
Fleet Captain and Board of Directors deal with this process.
June will be a very active month. Saturday, June 1st will kick the
month off with the Commodores Ball and the Island Fest Parade on
the same day. The following week of June 7, 8 & 9th will be the
Opening of the Island activities at Ford Yacht Club on Saturday. June
14th 15th and 16th will be our first summer rendezvous at Put-in-Bay.
Space at Put-in-Bay is limited so don’t delay registering for the
rendezvous! Contact Chuck Grech [email protected] to get
your boat registered.
Later in June will also mark the 3rd Annual Leukemia Cup Regatta on
June 29th. There will be activities out on the water, but there will also
be a cool (and free) party at the club with live music on the lawn
between 3 and 7pm. Come on down to this free party and enjoy the
day.
Lastly, let me solicit the membership now for new leaders. Each year
in the fall, our club holds elections for new officers for the Board of
Directors and a new Commodore to represent GIYC throughout the
area. If you would like to participate in this challenging yet rewarding
opportunity, please contact me ASAP.
Finally!! The weather broke and the harbor is filling up. OK, so there’s a
100-foot barge and half of the south side of Peek-a-Boo under construction,
but you’ll be seeing the new seawall and hopefully new docks in
place by the time you’re reading this. This is a vital investment in our
Club’s infrastructure, and will be followed by other harbor projects
over the next months and years. It’s not been an easy task for your
Board to deal with, and they deserve a lot of credit for tackling these
tough issues.
Our first summer rendezvous is coming up the weekend of June 14-16
at Put-in-Bay. I hope to see a lot of you out there, as this is always a fun
time, and the dockage at the Crew’s Nest and Miller Marina makes for
an easy way to get around to visit all of our members.
Through the efforts of Membership Chairman Larry Bagans, his Membership
Committee, Sandy and the “Open House / Membership Drive”
we welcomed 13 new members to the Club since the April Board meeting.
To help you figure out who they are when you come down to the
Club, Lady Lynne has crafted some “New Member Burgees” that will be
placed at the member’s table. Please drop by, introduce yourself, and
you’ll likely make a new friend.
I hope you’ve been enjoying the occasional Friday night entertainment.
Special thanks to Jenny Simon and P/C Bob Denning for their piano
prowess, and to Brendan Lamb (Grosse Ile High School senior) for his
guitar and singing. Watch for more to come over the next few months.
See you at the club!
On behalf of the entire membership at GIYC, I want to extend my sincere
condolences Paula Wheeler and Todd Duffett on the passing of their
mother Dorothy Duffett on March 14 th.
It is almost Memorial Day, the seawall is progressing, the harbor is filling
up and the Commodore’s Ball coming up quick. Have you made
your reservations? This also means that the first rendezvous of the
season to Put-in-Bay is approaching. You do not need to have a boat to
attend this event. You can get to the island by riding with someone who
is taking their boat or driving to Port Clinton and taking the Miller Ferry
or Jet Express. There are plenty of options for lodging on the island. I
suggest making reservations at one of the lodging options if you are not
staying on a boat.
Next month the Fourth of July activities will start on Thursday, July 4 th
and wrap up on Saturday, July 6 th. The theme for this year is Cajun /
Swamp. The complete schedule is in this months spray.
For those of you who remember Rick Springfield and Dennis DeYoung,
DYC is having a concert at their facility on July 11 th. There is a flyer at
the entrance of GIYC for information on ordering tickets.
Manager’s Report
Dear Members,
We caught some ladies doing good deeds! Lady Milkins, Lady Clark
and Lady Hawkins were found early Sunday morning on May 19th
planting planters full of flowers at the front docks and at the bar
entrance doors, they look beautiful……..Thanks ladies.
Well we can certainly put May and three weddings behind us and start
concentrating on our Commodores Ball. The staff and I are all gear up
for a wonderful themed Havana Nights Party.
Commodore Muscat has a great committee heading up the LLS regatta,
please join us for Brunch and dinner this day 8:00-12:00.
Please refer to the club itinerary for our Fourth of July agenda.
Fleet Captain
Message From The Fleet
We are now past the Spring Launch season and what a season it was! Could
you ever have imagined a 103 foot barge making the turn into the west
harbor? I was quite a sight to see when the Korneffel crew expertly maneuvered
their equipment into place without any damage. And how about the
weather? Quite the contrast with last year’s record breaking heat.
The construction is moving along at an impressive pace. I’m anxiously
awaiting the finished product and hope that by the time this is published it
is complete and we are back to enjoying the harbor.
In spite of the construction, launch is going along smoothly and I expect
everyone will be in the water by the Commodore’s Ball if not sooner.
As a reminder, well holders that did not occupy their wells at any time last
year are subject to losing their assignment if the well is not occupied by the
assigned boat by June 1 st. If you have a well assigned and sell your boat,
even if you intend to keep your well, please notify the Fleet Captain.
As we approach the boating season and plans for trips are firmed up, please
drop me a note to let me know when your well will be vacated so guests can
be accommodated and you can be certain your well will be open when you
return.
For those who plan to use the waters of the Great Lakes. Crossing over the
US/Canadian Border, please consider the benefits of obtaining a NEXUS card
to make reporting to both countries the least problematic possible. Everyone
on your boat has to hold a NEXUS card for the system to work but it is
well worth the time and money to obtain one to avoid the hassle and
embarrassment associated with unauthorized border crossings that result
in being stopped on the water. More on the Small Vessel Reporting System
to come.
The Fitting Out party didn’t happen as usual but a few members pitched in
and an impromptu get together and fund raiser for the Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society broke out. Thanks to everyone that contributed and
donated to the cause. 2013 Fleet Captain, Todd Duffett

P A G E 10
On Saturday, June 29 th the club will be hosting the Leukemia Cup Regatta. In
addition to the traditional sailboat race, there will also be a predicted log
competition for powerboats. Kicking off the regatta will be a breakfast buffet,
followed by a competitors’ meeting. After the races, a band will provide live
entertainment for all to enjoy. The Regatta will conclude with a buffet dinner
and a silent auction. Please come down to the club to participate in the
festivities and help raise funds for a worthy cause!
On Thursday, July 4 th the club will be hosting the Independence Day Race.
This sailing event is a fun regatta and in celebration of our freedom, the entry
fee is waived, so the race is “free” for all participants! This is a perfect race for
cruising sailors to join in on the fun.
Both of these events are club sponsored events and open to all members. If
you have any questions, or would like to participate as crew on another
member's boat, please feel free to contact a member of your GIYC Race
Junior Sailing Update
Dear Parents and Junior Sailors,
P A G E 11
Last year we had over 50 children and young adults involved in the learn to sail
and race team at GIYC. We also had a number of adults enrolled in our Adult
learn to sail classes. Please refer to the brochure and application located in the
Spray.
GIYC has recently added five optimist sailboats to its. We are also continuing an
optimist sailboat race team for the 8 to 12 yr old group. For the 12 and up
group we have nine 420 sailboats. Both boats are used for the learn to sail and
race team program. The race team competes in about six regattas including
Junior Bay Week – the highlight of the season.
We are fortunate to have three returning coaches this year. Nick Burr and Montana
Pruett will be the learn to sail coaches. Both know GIYC well as accomplished
junior sailors and high school sailors. Both have moved up to college
sailing and racing at Michigan State University where they are enrolled. Amanda
Baker will be the race team coach. Amanda also sailed for GIYC and the high
school team. She went on to the University of Michigan, became their cocaptain
and competed in regional and national collegiate championships. Now
graduated, she can be seen coaching UM at regional regattas.
The Grosse Ile Yacht Club Junior Sailing Committee again would like to extend
our sincere thanks to the Grosse Ile Yacht Club and its members whose generous
contributions allowed us to purchase a much needed safety boat (14 foot
inflatable, 30hp Mercury outboard and trailer) for our program last summer.
Thanks to your support we will be able to continue providing sailing and boating
education to members of the community for many years to come.
We would also like to thank Grosse Ile Educational Foundation (GIEF), the
Grosse Ile Community Sailing Foundation 501c3, Solo World Partners and
many private donors assisted in this worthwhile effort
GIYC Jr Sailing Committee
PS: The Grosse Ile Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program teaches our youth the
responsibilities and rewards of safe boat handling skills. Our instructors are US
Sailing Level 1 certified, trained in First Aid and CPR, and provide a curriculum
that teaches sailing skills, in an environment that promotes self-esteem, sportsmanship,
and teamwork.

Grosse Ile Yacht Club Sponsors The 3 rd Annual Leukemia Cup Regatta
While thousands of sailors throughout North America are scheduled to participate in nearly 50 Leukemia Cup
events in 2013, the Grosse Ile Yacht Club is revving up for its 3 rd Annual GIYC Leukemia Cup Regatta, an event that
is quickly becoming a GIYC and Grosse Ile Community Tradition.
Grosse Ile Yacht Club (GIYC) is proud to announce sponsorship of the third annual GIYC Leukemia Cup Regatta to
be held June 29, 2013 at the GIYC. The Leukemia Cup Regatta is a combined race and fundraising event to elevate
awareness and research in the fight against blood cancers (Leukemia, Lymphoma, Myelomas’ etc.) The National
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) series has been chaired by ESPN sailing commentator and 1976
America's Cup winner Gary Jobson since 1993. Over $42 million has been raised to fight blood cancers. Since
GIYC began participating in the Leukemia Cup Regatta just two years ago, they have raised over $70 thousand. For
GIYC, the journey towards helping to find a cure began as a personal mission for many of the club members
following the loss of a dear friend after a long battle with blood cancer. The mission continues today with a focus
on continued research and a celebration of survivors that would not have been possible without the treatments
now available.
Per GIYC Commodore Ken Muscat….the event works because people can have great fun with friends and feel good
about contributing to an important cause. To participate, each boat must register with their LLS Chapter Regatta,
and then each crew member sets a goal for fundraising as well. It becomes a competition within the clubs and
between the clubs – but truly everyone wins. GIYC will also be the first club in the LLS Regatta series to include a
power boat race referred to as a Predicted Log.
We look forward to a great race and fun filled event for everyone. We are also very happy to be teaming up with
our friends at Ford Yacht Club as we embark on a shared mission to find a cure for cancer. For certain, it wouldn’t
be a true Regatta without a little friendly competition from the other neighboring yacht clubs (Great Lakes Yacht
Club, North Star Sail Club, and Port Huron Yacht Club). So the challenge is on, to all those great clubs that
participate in the LLS Regatta events… to see who can have the most fun while fighting for a great cause. Truly –
we’re all winners in this race! What better reason to go for a sail and get involved!!
