  Monteurs en loodgieters die dol zijn op techniek vinden bij jachtenbouwer Heesen in Oss een mooie uitdaging. Wie sleutelt er nou dagelijks aan de meest exclusieve jachten ter wereld? Het is weer eens wat anders dan keukens monteren.

Lang niet iedereen in deze regio weet dat bij Heesen in Oss superjachten worden gebouwd. Zoals het ultraluxe en supersnelle 80 meter lange vlaggenschip Galactica dat pas nog groot in het nieuws was. Nathan Robinson is monteur bij Heesen: “Familie en vrienden stuurden me allemaal berichtjes of ik aan dat jacht heb gewerkt. Ja, dat geeft me wel een trots gevoel, dat ik daaraan heb mogen meebouwen.”

Nathan werkt bij Heesen op de afdeling Mechanical production, waar ze de complete mechanische installaties bouwen van de jachten. Frank Vermeulen is er voorman: “Wat het werk speciaal maakt, is dat je met een kale romp begint en vervolgens alle ruimtes inclusief de machinekamer opbouwt met alle systemen. Ik ben 18 jaar geleden bij toeval in de jachtbouw terechtgekomen, maar het is zulk aantrekkelijk en uitdagend werk dat ik niets anders meer wil.”

Ervaring in de jachtbouw is volgens Frank niet nodig. “Het mooie is dat je elke dag heel veel leert, omdat geen project hetzelfde is.” Ook kun je vanuit een VMBO-opleiding bij Heesen werkervaring opdoen als BBL-er. Naast monteurs, loodgieters en BBL-ers zoekt Heesen ook projectleiders. Nathan zou het wel weten: “Als je van je passie voor techniek je werk wilt maken, moet je bij Heesen komen werken.”

Heesen Launches Largest Superyacht to Date: 80m Project Cosmos

Huge news has broken out from the Netherlands as Heesen Yachts announced the launch of its largest superyacht to date, 80-metre Project Cosmos.

Project Cosmos, now renamed Galactica, is the largest and fastest all-aluminium superyacht in the world, and becomes the current flagship of renowned builder Heesen Yachts. The 80m superyacht has a gross tonnage of 1,700GT and a mighty top speed of almost 30 knots.

The complex build of this record-setting precision aluminium superyacht is a testament to the in-house expertise and craftsmanship at Heesen Yachts. The construction of the shipyard’s largest ever superyacht at 80-metres is a signal of intent to take on more daring project and rise to the challenges of owners.

The challenge is one which has been executed masterfully by the engineers and craftspeople at Heesen, with tireless work throughout the pandemic from Heesen’s own in-house teams and loyal subcontractors to ensure this yacht was launched on schedule.

The size of this new Heesen flagship makes her top speed of 30 knots all the more impressive. The result was achieved through the design of a lightweight and low-drag hull, honed to perfection by Heesen’s naval architects on an iteration of the Fast Displacement Hull Form devised by van Oossanen.

One of the greatest challenges in the build was to ensure the yacht had sufficient longitudinal strength. Heesen’s engineers designed and patented the Backbone – an intricate, full-length structural reinforcement system – to make this possible.

Galactica is powered by a traditional yet highly refined diesel propulsion, with four engines, two gearboxes, variable-pitch propellers and ultra-innovative Promas rudders.

“Today, we are celebrating the launch of a unique yacht,” said Heesen CEO Arthur Brouwer. “Unique not only for our shipyard, as she is the largest we have ever taken on and represents the pinnacle of our achievements to date. Cosmos is also unique in the industry - the largest and fastest aluminium yacht in her class ever built.”

Iconic British studio Winch Design was selected to craft the elegant exterior of Galactica, which features clean lines, a sporty silhouette and an extensive use of glass to create a timeless, dynamic profile.

“The Winch vision for Cosmos was to retain Heesen’s sporty DNA but blend it with an innovative, futuristic spin,” explains Jim Dixon, Director of Yachts and Aviation at Winch Design. “Curved glass forms smooth, sculpted shapes, creating a feeling of slick, contemporary charm.”

James Russell, Yacht Exteriors Associate at Winch, added that “the brief stressed that she had to have a strong and unique signature whilst retaining the Heesen DNA that we all know and love. The emphasis was on creating a fast looking yacht that sits elegantly on the water, a feat that has been cleverly achieved through the use of sculptural, curved forms and perfectly balanced proportions.”

The calming and elegant interior design was penned by Sinot Yacht Design and Architecture, with a neutral palette featuring splashes of a range of blue hues to create a welcoming environment.

The expansive beach club is the main attraction and relaxation area onboard Galactica, with side and stern platforms, and the backlit onyx bar is the focal point of the beach club.

Following the celebration of her launch, Galactica will remain at Heesen for commissioning before undergoing intense sea trials in the North Sea in February. The 80m superyacht will be delivered to her owners in April 2022.

Heesen Yachts ‘Lusine’ Reviewed

The Armenian word lusine translates to “moon” in English. That’s why, aboard the 198-foot Heesen Lusine , lunar and celestial themes are everywhere, from wall features to the teak decking. A crescent moon, for instance, is in the middle of the helipad. Even the font of the yacht’s name runs from thin to thick, reflecting the moon’s four waxing and waning phases.

Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design in the Netherlands created the opulent, almost art deco interior, which Heesen says is by far the most complicated and expensive it has ever produced. Initially, the yacht’s owner was inspired by Heesen’s then-Project Ceres (which launched as Galactica ), but he ended up developing a fully custom vessel. At 1,079 gross tons, and based on a Fast Displacement Hull Form by Dutch naval architecture firm Van Oossanen, Lusine is Heesen’s longest and biggest-volume steel-hull yacht to date. The overall design process was led by Frank Laupman’s team at the Dutch firm Omega Architects.

Lusine’s profile fuses contemporary and modern styling to stunning effect. While the bow is conventionally pointed, the superstructure is more angular and extends a little farther forward than usual. The high foredeck terrace is vast and capable of hosting quite a party. The bridge-deck wing stations are exaggerated to create much wider side decks, and there is a hint of a bird’s wing amidships in the superstructure relief that cleverly integrates all the upper three decks without actually breaking the horizontal sweeps of glass along the main and upper decks.

Not only is the craftsmanship throughout Lusine exceptional, but the level of detailed design goes way beyond the norm as well. For instance, almost every piece of furniture is custom-size, and the breathtaking parquet soles, rich joinery and intricate marquetry are made from rare woods, special stones, and unusual leathers and skins, such as stingrays and puffer fish. One of the biggest design statements is the yacht’s circular staircase and glass elevator connecting all four decks, with a contoured leather mural depicting sea, land, air and then star themes as guests rise from the yacht’s lower deck to the top deck.

Lusine’s main-deck gathering spaces are conventional enough. Entering from the cockpit seating and dining space, the main-deck salon has lounge and dining areas aft, with an amidships galley and pantry to port. A companionway to starboard leads to the formal, double-glass-door entrance and to a side-boarding ladder beyond. The double-pedestal, cornice-topped dining table has radial Macassar veneers inlaid with gold leaf, blue agate and sycamore. The custom chandelier above is from Preciosa.

Accommodations are for 16 guests in eight en suite staterooms: three with double berths on the upper deck and five with twin berths on the lower deck. The lower-deck staterooms can also be used by personal staff.

The 540-square-foot owners’ stateroom is aft on the upper deck, where many other yachts have a sky lounge. Views from here are fabulous, with a 180-degree panorama to the sides and across the upper deck’s aft lounges, dining area and hot tub. The whole space can be secured for owner privacy.

Forward on the main deck is the L-shaped VIP stateroom, conceived for close family. It has an en suite double-berth stateroom and an adjacent en suite twin-berth stateroom. Both open onto a starboard-side private sitting room, which connects to the yacht’s main lobby.

The crew complement is 15. A captain’s cabin is to port abaft the modern, paperless bridge, with the remainder of the crew cabins forward on the lower deck.

Lusine has room for three Boston Whaler tenders: a 270 Vantage, a 210 Dauntless and a 180 Dauntless. The smallest and largest are housed with various toys in a forward garage, which has hinge-up doors to either side of the bow. The 210 is kept in the stern garage with more toys.

For air arrivals, a touch-and-go helipad is on the after end of the top deck. Interestingly, the area around the mast base and at the top of the central staircase is enclosed to create an alternative foyer for guests arriving this way. The space includes a pilot’s cabin.

Propulsion is twin 2,575 hp MTU 12V 4000 M65L diesels, which reportedly deliver a top speed around 18 knots and an ocean-straddling 4,200-nautical-mile range at 13 knots. Twin Naiad fins provide stabilization, and onboard power comes primarily from twin 315 kW Zenoro generators. The yacht’s air conditioning is built to high-tropical specification.

Lusine embodies all the knowledge and experience that Heesen has amassed by delivering more than 80 metal motoryachts with an average length of 155 feet in the past 20 years. The yard consistently delivers around four big yachts annually—not tied to the four phases of the moon but stellar nonetheless.

A coffee table in the main salon contains a small slice of lunar meteorite. A few of these rare rocks have been found on Earth and matched forensically with samples brought back from NASA’s Apollo missions. Scientists believe that the rocks arrived in debris showers following crater-creating events. A meteorite with proven provenance is the closest thing to a moon rock that money can buy; the real ones are owned by U.S. government agencies. 

Now for Sale

Sadly, Lusine’s owner died right around the time the yacht was delivered. It’s now listed for sale “as new” with Burgess and is lying in the West Mediterranean. The asking price at press time was $82 million.

Ever Larger

Lusine is Heesen’s largest steel-hull motoryacht to date, but the yard’s largest project so far is the semi-displacement, all-aluminum, 263-foot, 1,700-gross-ton Galactica , which departed the Oss, Netherlands, yard in early 2022. Galactica is also reportedly the world’s largest and fastest motoryacht with a conventional shaft-line propulsion. Heesen says the vessel is capable of 29 knots, with four MTU 20V 4000 series engines.

Busy Builder

Heesen mostly builds semi-custom projects on common platforms. In recent years, most have been fast-displacement or semi-displacement hulls in steel/aluminum or all aluminum, but, occasionally, there’s a full-displacement steel/aluminum or all-aluminum project in the mix. Lusine is a good example of its steel-hull yachts.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show. 

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.  

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north. 

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million. 

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

Book, an American entrepreneur, and serial superyacht owner, while the shirt was worn by Michele Giunta, a Tuscan globetrotter who, in 2009, opened a restaurant with his family on the marina of Viareggio, the Santa Monica—that evening marked the birth of the partnership that led to the opening of the first authentic steakhouse on the Tuscan coast and a sincere friendship destined to endure.

Proceeding in order, Mr Book is a visionary investor and a passionate Jets supporter. That evening, while enjoying a seafood dish at Santa Monica, he noticed Michele’s t-shirt and struck up a conversation. The two discovered they shared common passions, including a love for a good steak. “Bob mentioned us in an article published in Yachting, the oldest US yachting magazine,” recalls Giunta. “We kept in touch, and the idea of ​​opening a steakhouse began to take shape.” Last year, a commercial space next to the seafood trattoria became available, and it was decided to bring the initiative to life. So, in December 2023, Book Ends opened its doors, named after Mr Book’s boat, an exquisite Heesen yacht, and it was an immediate success. “I must say that for some time, our customers, mostly seafaring people and many crews of large yachts, had been asking us for meat,” explains Michele. “Now they can find the perfect T-bone (by far the bestseller) cooked over olive wood embers.” The meat enjoyed at Book Ends comes from specialized selectors and is of the highest quality. Giunta lived in Spain for ten years and chose his main supplier there, Miguel Vergara from Valladolid. But the Viareggio restaurant also serves German Alpine cuts, some cuts of Chianina beef, and, for true connoisseurs, an Irish prime beef that comes from more mature animals and offers a more intense flavor. All meats are dry-aged in-house for an average of thirty days: “We always buy whole animals,” specifies Michele. The Viareggio restaurant has 66 seats and is set in an environment with soft lighting, dark ceilings and wood, and a large open grill.

It is the prototype of a format because the two partners are already considering future openings: Milan, Miami, Toronto, and Tel Aviv. Mr Book pays great attention to detail. “He often comes to Viareggio,” Michele recounts, “and every time he has some new idea.” Nothing is ever left to chance. “Once I was at his house in Fort Lauderdale, we were sitting in the living room, he looked up at two paintings of his yacht and said to me, ‘Those would look good in the restaurant,’ and before you knew it, they were hanging in the dining room in Viareggio.” Of course, the vision of the American entrepreneur is not limited to the gastronomic proposal; the commitment is to maximize the brand. The brand has been registered, a dedicated clothing line has been launched, and plates and knives have even been branded with the acquisition of a textile company. The logo was designed by a famous architect who is active in the United States.

But who are the customers of the steakhouse? “Surprisingly, we are seeing more and more women getting into meat,” reveals Giunta. “Once upon a time, men would order steak and their companions a ‘nice salad.’ Not anymore. We have also seen many elderly people preferring meat over raw fish.” And Mr Book? “He loves the prime beef tomahawk, very well done.” Accompanied by a good Tuscan red wine – Brunello, Bolgheri, or Chianti Classico – or by an Iberian label, in memory of Michele’s years in Spain. On the other hand, Giunta’s specialty is a beautiful spaghetti with clams and bottarga.

The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance.
