Duxbury Yacht Club

The Duxbury Yacht Club (DYC) is a private club located in Duxbury, Massachusetts that offers sailing, golf, tennis, paddle, swimming, and junior activities. It was founded in 1875 and was incorporated in 1895. [1] The DYC is unique among yacht clubs in the United States because it is the only American yacht club to offer athletic recreation besides yachting and golf, and one of five American yacht clubs to offer athletic recreation besides yachting. [2] It was among the first yacht clubs founded in the United States in the 19th century. [3] [4]
The DYC is governed by an Executive Committee, a Board of Directors, and Committee Chairs.
The Executive Committee includes a Commodore, a Vice Commodore, a Rear Commodore, a Treasurer, a Secretary, and an Activities Chairperson. [2] The Board of Directors include committee chairpersons, a former Commodore, and "generalists." [2] Committee Chairs direct specific club activities and operations; e.g., finance, property, and entertainment. [2]
The DYC was founded in 1875, but was not incorporated until 1895. The articles of incorporation state, "The purpose for which the corporation is constituted is the encouragement of yachting and athletic exercises. The place in which the corporation is established or located is the Town of Duxbury within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts." [2]
The club began by offering competitive yachting and sailing recreation in Duxbury Bay . In 1900, golf was an activity available to members after the DYC leased fields from J. Knowles Parker's farmland. A six-hole golf course was constructed between 1913 and 1915 on land acquired from the farms of Parker, Peterson, White, and Reynolds. Lawn tennis was played on the private courts of members between 1900 and 1927, until the DYC constructed three courts on its own property. [2] Theatrical stage performances produced by the DYC began in the 1940s. By the end of the 1960s, four blue clay tennis courts were added to the original three. An eighteen-hole golf course was completed in 1976 after the addition of nine holes to the original course. [2]

Renovation work will begin next month at Duxbury Yacht Club in Massachusetts, USA, the final phase of a master plan that was first developed by Sanford Golf Design in 2008.
The club was founded in 1875 and in the 1920s a nine-hole course designed by Wayne Stiles was built. It was renovated in 1951 under the guidance of William Mitchell and in 1969 the club hired Geoffrey Cornish to design an additional nine.
Randall Grills, head professional at Duxbury Yacht Club, says: “The critical elements at Duxbury Yacht Club golf course that require upgrading are clear. Bunkers have been lost over the years, which detracts from the strategic quality and aesthetics of the course. Tees have become narrow and unlevelled due to years of topdressing and wear; new tees should be added to stretch the course. Some trees should be removed to open up air circulation and light for proper turf growth.
“The general strategy and aesthetics of the original design have diminished over the past 50 years. All of these issues are common to private clubs after years of constant wear and tear with limited operating and capital investment.”
Duxbury turned to Sanford Golf Design to develop a master plan for the golf course in 2008. Following their recommendations, the club began work to improve drainage, expand greens and remove trees. Work continued over the next decade with renovations made to tees and bunkers.
Golf course architect John Sanford has a long-time connection to the club. “The project at Duxbury is a very special one for me. In the early 1960s my family lived in Duxbury and my dad played golf there during the baseball off season,” said Sanford. “Also, my original inspiration to be a golf course architect was from Bill Mitchell who was our neighbour in West Palm Beach, Florida.”
In 2018, Sanford Golf Design was retained to update the master plan.
“Our scope of work for this project is to restore all bunkers, new tees to accommodate all levels of play, redesign of some fairways, replace 25 acres of maintained turf with unirrigated native fescues, new carts paths where needed, expanded practice tee, and a new short game area,” said David Ferris of Sanford Golf Design.
“One of the primary objectives is to enhance the simplicity of our combined meadows and rolling landscape,” said Grills. “Keeping more to the original Stiles design of natural ridge lines and features that blend seamlessly into the West Campus landscape. There will be some lengthened holes, but not distance for distance’s sake, and many new forward tees to expand our composite yardage. All these changes are intended to provide a variety of fun and memorable holes that can be enjoyed by every demographic and skill level of golfer.”
NMP Golf Construction will be the contractor for the project, with On-Course Golf and National Lawn Sprinklers also involved.
“We are excited for golfers to see the course after we have completed the reshaping of several holes and have improved the aesthetics and strategy of the course,” said Ferris.
“Nine holes were originally designed by Wayne Stiles, and the old plans indicating strategy were studied, and bunker and tee placements adjusted accordingly. The nine holes added by Cornish have different character and part of the plan is to unify the bunker styles so that the Cornish holes complement the Stiles holes.”
Grills said: “Duxbury has tremendous potential to stand out as one of the best and most beautiful courses in New England. The course is a ‘core’ layout, meaning houses do not separate the holes from one another. Additionally, the gentle rolling topography, on the front nine adds interest and shot-making opportunities.
“There is a wonderful cover of trees at Duxbury. Subsequently, there is not much need for a large-scale planting program. The addition of native fescue grass in out of play areas will help create definition and colour contrast throughout the course. This is an inexpensive and effective way to improve aesthetics.”
The course is expected to reopen in summer 2020.

U.S. Women’s Open Qualifying At Duxbury Yacht CLUB

DUXBURY, Massachusetts – Despite overcast skies and chilly temperatures, a strong field of U.S. Women’s Open Qualifying hopefuls produced plenty of red numbers over a 36-hole day at The Duxbury Yacht Club. With just three spots available in the field at Pebble Beach Golf Club, top professionals and amateurs from around the world teed it up.
Perrine Delacour took home medalist honors with rounds of 67-68, good for a -9 under total.
Hailing from Laon, France, Delacour is a member of the LPGA Tour and has one previous appearance at the U.S. Women’s Open (T-40 in 2020). Delacuor turned pro in 2013. She most recently competed in the Mizuho America’s Open, tying for 43rd, and the Bank of Hope LPGA Match-Play, placing 9th. One major career highlight includes representing France in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
“I’m really happy, first time I made it through a qualifier, and the way I made it, it was pretty solid,” said Delacuor. “Going to Pebble Beach is a dream come true.”
Her first round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 6th hole: “I was going to hit my driver no matter what. I thought I pulled it and the group in front of us said it was on the green eight feet away from the hole.”

“I knew it was going to be windy in the morning, so I stayed patient,” Darquea said, “I tried my best effort on the par fives, I knew I could reach most of them, that was important.” She hopes to be able to pull off another 8-under-par at Pebble Beach as well.
On the heels of finishing her senior season at the University of Georgia, Céleste Dao took third place and low amateur honors, after firing rounds of 68 and 70. Dao tallied 9 birdies over the course of her two rounds. The Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot, Quebec , native has made it through qualifying in Massachusetts twice before, taking medalist honors at Cape Cod National in 2018 and earning a spot at TPC Boston in 2019, before missing the cut in each of her U.S. Women’s Open appearances.
Dao’s thoughts throughout the day were to “hang on and have fun.” This is her third time heading to a US Women’s Open. “I’m really excited, third time’s a charm hopefully.”
Keep an eye out for these names at Pebble Beach when the 2023 US Women’s Open starts up in July.

About Duxbury Yacht Club
As implied in its name, Duxbury Yacht Club was founded in 1875 as a home for sailing. About a century ago it was the second-largest yachting center in the state. Located on Duxbury Bay on the north shore of Plymouth Harbor, the club has since expanded into many sports, including golf and tennis. When they weren’t sailing, golf became a popular activity for club members, and six makeshift holes were laid out in 1901 on what was known as Parker’s Pasture.
More land was purchased in 1926 and with the help of architect Wayne Stiles, the course had nine excellent holes. It was renovated in 1951 under the guidance of William Mitchell, and in 1969 the club hired Geoffrey Cornish to design an additional nine holes.
Records from the club’s rich history in golf and tennis hang in the rustic Sprague-Parker barn, which dates back to the 18th century and serves as the clubhouse. With nautical flags hanging above, there’s a fireplace with the year 1875 inscribed and a horseshoe that was unearthed during a renovation project in 1998 and remains hanging for good luck.
The club has a familiar-friendly moniker and it has always prioritized athletic, activity-sport-like competition over social activities. It has even been referred to as “The Best Day Camp In The World.”

The 18-hole Duxbury Yacht course at the Duxbury Yacht Club facility in Duxbury, features 6,408 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72.
