Vitters and Oceanco's 85m sailing superyacht Aquijo is delivered
The much-anticipated 85 metre sailing superyacht Aquijo , created in collaboration between Dutch yacht building powerhouses Oceanco and Vitters Shipyards, has been delivered to her owner. It's the first delivery this year for both yards.
Built under the project code name P85, Aquijo is significant as the first collaboration of this kind for the two yards, for her sheer size – she will be one of the largest sailing yachts in the world – and for the fact that even at her notable size, she is designed to be a true performance sailing yacht.
Hull No 3069 for Vitters and Y711 for Oceanco, the aluminium ketch-rigged yacht features design and naval architecture by Bill Tripp . The two yards along with Tripp Design worked closely in every step of the design and build of Aquijo , in cooperation with the owner’s representative Master Yachts.
Aquijo combines Oceanco’s experience building custom motor yachts larger than 80 metres LOA with Vitters’ talents in creating high-performance sailing yachts. The result is a highly complex, performance-driven sailing machine.
Vitters developed a custom steering system for the new yacht. It works by translating the hydrodynamic forces on the rudder blades directly to the steering wheels on the flybridge, thus providing the helmsman with immediate feedback and a feeling for how the yacht is moving through the water.
This is a huge innovation as often on larger yachts the biggest complaint from those at the helm is you can’t “feel” the yacht’s movements, and therefore respond as quickly, as one would on a smaller yacht. This innovation helps satiate the builder’s brief to build a real performer and is, “as nimble and easy to handle as a yacht of smaller dimensions, proving that a [sailing superyacht] can have competitive sailing capabilities with relative ease of sailing”. Attention has also been paid to safety and comfort for both crew and guests while sailing.
Dölker + Voges is responsible for the comfortable and modern interior design, that spreads out over four decks, combining shared living spaces and private accommodations.
She has a high-volume superstructure that affords clear sightlines from inside, and the layout is designed with a holistic view to blur the lines between interior and exterior living spaces.

Vitters Shipyard and Oceanco are thrilled to announce that they are currently working on the construction of the 85-metre performance sailing yacht Project 85 , also known as hull Y711 at Oceanco, and as hull 3069 at Vitters. Luxury mega yacht Project 85 features naval architecture by the US-based design studio Tripp Design Naval Architecture , while her interior design is by the Hamburg-based studio Dölker + Voges.
Superyacht Project 85 will be the actual proof that a large sailing yacht can have at least equal sailing characteristics as a yacht of smaller dimensions. As can be expected from both naval architect and builder, this yacht will be a true sailing yacht, performing well across the entire wind range and always a true pleasure to sail and cruise on board.
As an experienced sailor, the Owner’s brief called for a performing and comfortable cruising yacht, suitable for long range world-wide cruising and with long-time independence from shore.
With the powerful rig, special attention was given to the development of sailing systems, which had to be, first and foremost, safe, strong and light. This was a challenging project in itself which came down to the custom development of winches, up to 40 tons, furlers and ground-breaking masts and rigging.
There is accommodation for 12 guests plus a compliment of 18 on board, divided over three decks. The interior in a modern styling by Dolker +Voges has a light wood-tone tone, with remarkable stainless steel details and colourful upholstery.
Project 85 superyacht is a remarkable co-operation between Vitters Shipyard and Oceanco, where both partners contribute experience and knowledge in the, for each yard, relevant areas. This is a unique way of two shipyards working together, as unique as the yacht itself. Both Vitters Shipyard and Oceanco are dedicated to make Project 85 the first large sailing super yacht that combines outstanding sailing abilities with reliability and state-of-the-art comfort and luxury.
Project 85 yacht will be ready for delivery middle of 2015.

One of the largest yachts available for charter and featuring an award-winning design by Studio Vafiadis, it’s certainly not hard to see why.
Made for charter from day one, O’Ptasia comes with an outdoor cinema, a spacious gym and a huge beach club complete with hammam, massage room and sauna.
Up to 12 guests are accommodated onboard across 10 spacious cabins. The owner’s suite is a particular highlight and spans 85 square metres with private panoramic views. Just as impressive is the 95 square metre VIP cabin, located on the main deck, as well as four double cabins and one twin cabin on the main deck.
The Captain
Captain Vangelis Berdos commenced his ocean career more than two decades ago on board motor tankers before completing a captain stint on the Hellenic Navy’s Ferry Ios. He has extensive experience helming M/Ys Sapphire and O’Neiro and running M/Y Suncoco for eight years. Trilingual in English, Greek and German, Captain Vangelis prides himself on ensuring that your every need and desire is met while on board and in his charge. His interests include martial arts, kart racing, sailing and watersports.
The Experience
The experience of O’Ptasia revolves around the finer things in life. A touch-and-go helipad ensures seamless adventures at sea, while there’s plenty to enjoy on board. She comes fully equipped with a host of exciting water toys, including a custom 9.75 metre limo tender, 6 metre Novurainia catamaran, an 8 metre Chris Craft tender and a range of personal watercraft, towables and inflatables for the whole family to enjoy.
With O’Ptasia’s crew of 29 having extensively travelled the Mediterranean, you are assured of always dropping anchor in the best spots. “In my opinion,” says the captain, “Greece and the southern coast of Turkey are two of the best cruising destinations in the world. There you can find tranquil bays, natural parks and ancient ruins, all within just a few miles of one another.”
When not enjoying the treasures of the Mediterranean coast, life on board is everything you could want and more. One of O’Ptasia’s highlights is undeniably the vast beach club complete with a bar, oversized seating areas and a full spa experience, including a massage room, sauna and steam room. There’s also a fully-equipped gym and an outdoor cinema for movie nights under the stars.
The Cuisine
Born and raised in Greece, Chef Valentina Argyropoulou studied culinary art in Athens before working in high-end restaurants across Europe. Her signature style is fresh, seasonal, and traditional with a twist. “I prefer cooking with seasonal ingredients to create the perfect dish - I always go to the local markets for fresh products,” she says.
Bringing her Greek heritage into her menus is not just about Mediterranean flavours and fresh ingredients, however. For Chef Argyropoulou, it’s all about creating food with heart and soul. “My mother taught me that through food, you could express your feelings and make people around you happier,” she explains. “Food creates memories. I love the opportunity to meet so many different people and cultures on board and to create these memories through my plates.”

Recalling one of her favourite culinary experiences on board, Chef Argyropoulou describes a dessert to remember. “One of my signature dishes is the Chocolate Sphere filled with chocolate mousse, Caramelia Valrhona, and berries. The hot chocolate is poured over the top, melting the sphere right in front of the guests!”

Benetti Project LIFE (85m) // Espen Øino // Francois Zuretti
Espen øino created the 85m motor yacht project life for the italian shipyard benetti yachts..
Benetti has recently unveiled Project LIFE, an 85-meter megayacht that aims to enhance its existing fleet. Renowned yacht designer Espen Øino has lent his expertise to the exterior design, while Francois Zuretti has contributed to the interior design. By collaborating with Øino, Benetti can tap into his extensive knowledge and reputation in the international yachting community.
Project LIFE builds upon Benetti’s distinctive characteristic of creating new lifestyles, mainly focusing on the stern area of the yacht. Øino offers various interpretations of this concept across the decks, allowing for multiple experiences. All spaces aboard Project LIFE are designed around social entertainment, featuring large communal areas and adaptable meeting spaces on each deck. Notably, the yacht boasts a remarkable revolving lounge that adjusts its focal point depending on the time of day.
Regarding sustainability, Project LIFE incorporates the latest technologies to minimize energy consumption. This includes a highly efficient and optimized hull, diesel-electric propulsion with fossil and non-fossil fuel (HVO) technology, and POD transmission. The yacht is also equipped with integrated hybrid solar panels that harness solar and thermal energy to power the tenders, toys, and appliances onboard.
Francois Zuretti has made significant contributions to yachting history in collaboration with Benetti throughout his career. Notable examples of their joint endeavors include the remarkable vessels Ambrosia, Saga, and the Benetti Classic, Tradition, and Vision series. Zuretti’s expertise in interior design is evident in his ability to strike a harmonious balance between color schemes and the surrounding environment. This is achieved by cleverly using expanded openings, which allow natural light to permeate the spaces and showcase the ever-changing landscape. Zuretti’s meticulous attention to detail is particularly evident in his careful selection of materials and ceiling heights, establishing a seamless and cohesive connection between the interior and exterior spaces. The resulting contemporary and inviting environments incorporate modern design elements, such as curved lines, which can be observed in the Main Reception, Main Saloon, and Upper Lounge areas. Furthermore, Zuretti’s commitment to maximizing the enjoyment of sea views is exemplified by the inclusion of floor-to-ceiling windows, which provide unobstructed vistas of the surrounding waters. Additionally, Zuretti has skillfully designed a lighting system that creates evocative atmospheres throughout all leisure areas, further enhancing the overall experience for those on board.

Contest 85CS: This Dutch superyacht is a seriously efficient sailing machine
- October 17, 2019
Made for an owner with a very particular set of demands, the first Contest 85CS incorporates a host of features that make it a world cruiser with a difference. David Harding tells the story
All photos: Carlo Baroncini
Product Overview
Manufacturer:.
Cruising the world in a large, fast, comfortable yacht is everyone’s dream. Even if your finances allow the dream to become a reality, however, you’re still faced with the practicalities of running the boat; of undertaking or organising maintenance and repairs in parts of the world where you won’t find lift-out facilities and a well-stocked chandlery in every port.
You might have a permanent crew, but a modern yacht and its systems are complex. The greater the size, the greater the complexity and the more crew you will need, so how do you make sure you can enjoy your sailing with minimal downtime and without an army of technicians to hand?
And if you’re a keen and experienced sailor who doesn’t want to forego the simple, elemental pleasures of sailing when a boat becomes larger, how do you make sure you end up with a boat that’s still fun to sail?
The 111% headsail is furled away during tacks. A Code 0 and a gennaker provide the downwind power
The answer to all these questions is to make some important decisions carefully from the outset. This is the story of a boat whose owner did exactly that; who knew what he wanted and chose with the greatest care.
Those choices were, critically, shaped by the loss of his previous yacht, an extended Oyster 825 also named Polina Star , which lost her keel and sank in the Med in 2015.
Here we’re going to look at the design, the systems and the engineering that have gone into the creation of the new, truly remarkable yacht – an 85-footer that can be handled by a crew of two and in which sophistication and technology are combined with good old-fashioned back-to-basics practicality.

A project of integration
Few decisions are more important than choosing your builder. For the owner of Polina Star IV , that decision was easy: Contest. It might not be the first name you think of for a boat of this size, but with the launch of the Contest 85CS this Dutch builder has shown itself capable of more than just challenging the established names at the top end of the semi-production market.
Contest celebrated its 60th anniversary this year. And that’s 60 years in the ownership of the same family. During this time it has progressively moved up the size range.
Having started, as many of us will remember, with the Contest 25 , the Dutch yard produced classics such as Dick Zaal’s phenomenally successful Contest 31 . Recent decades have seen the launch of the 42, 45, 50, 57, 62, 67 and 72 – though not in that order – so the development of the Contest 85 CS has been a significant, if not wholly unexpected, step.
The slab-reefing mainsail runs on a Harken Switch T-Track to minimise the height of the stack when it’s lowered
Venturing into new territory is something Contest has, in its own quiet way, done many times before. This is not a company that bangs its own drum particularly loudly.
It just gets on with developing boats that people have wanted to buy for the past 60 years. It was in the vanguard when it came to introducing features such as keel-stepped, swept-spreader fractional rigs with large mainsails and smaller foretriangles.
At the same time it has been building to Lloyd’s standards since 1972, making a point of blending innovation with structural integrity.
Reaching under big masthead asymmetric. The sails are by North
For Polina Star ’s owner, one reason for choosing Contest is that he had already owned two previous boats from the yard – a 48 and a 62. When the time came for the next one a few years ago, the 72 was the largest in Contest’s range and wasn’t big enough.
To accommodate a permanent crew of two or three and have comfortable quarters for the owner and guests too, all with a degree of privacy, you need 80ft.
An alternative yacht of a suitable size was found but, when circumstances dictated that it be replaced, Contest was the yard on the receiving end of the call. Plans had already been afoot for a Contest 85, and, not surprisingly, progress was accelerated by the prospect of an owner for the first boat.
A working cockpit for the crew would normally be abaft the guests’ cockpit, moving the wheels further aft
In the autumn of 2018, after more than two years of collaboration between Judel/Vrolijk, Contest’s in-house engineers, the owner, his skipper and Wetzels Brown Partners (interior designers), the new Polina Star was launched.
When a small window of opportunity to see Polina Star in action appeared in May, I flew to Pisa, and, little more than an hour after touching down, found myself bouncing around in a RIB in 25 knots of breeze taking photos as 85ft of Contest thundered past.
On boarding, I was greeted by Contest’s CEO, Arjen Conijn (whose grandfather founded the Contest yard in 1959), together with the skipper, Alessio Cannoni, and his crew.
Alessio Cannoni is Polina Star IV’s hugely experienced skipper. A former design engineer and seasoned racing sailor, he has been involved in the project since its inception
The Italian job
Within a minute I was given the wheel – well, a choice of the twin carbon wheels – and enjoyed the experience of guiding 55 tonnes and several million pounds’-worth of yacht around the Gulf of Follonica.
It was instantly apparent that sailing pleasure was a high priority in the design of the Contest 85CS. I have always maintained that, by and large, the pleasure derived from sailing a boat is in inverse proportion to its size.
The Contest 85CS proves that there are exceptions. For all her size and power, she was extraordinarily responsive. The feel from the single large rudder on its carbon stock was transmitted directly to the helm with no slack or delay in the linkage, never leaving any doubt about what the boat was trying to say.
On a reach under staysail and single-reefed main we clocked an easy 12 knots. Upwind the log hovered between 6.5 and 8 knots in the gusty conditions with the apparent wind at around 30°.
We were marginally over-powered at times and had to feather into the stronger gusts. I wondered whether we might have been faster with two slabs, especially given the slight sag in the inner forestay as it’s the outer stay for the 111% headsail that supports the rig.
As with many smaller boats, especially those that share the Contest 85CS’s relatively hard turn to the bilge, the balance changed noticeably at different angles of heel. This meant actively steering, making helming a far more engaging process than you might expect. It was like sailing a very big, powerful dinghy.
A stainless steel frame supports the permanent cockpit cover for all-weather protection
Sails can be trimmed from the helm with the bank of four hydraulic Lewmar winches each side: two 111s and two 88s. The owner has chosen more winches than would be the norm because he and Cannoni want to be able to trim and work the boat effectively should any winch or other hardware become unusable.
They also have two more Lewmar 88s either side of the mast to handle the fully battened, slab-reefing mainsail on its Harken Switch T-Track that minimises the height of the stack. The extra winches, together with an array of additional blocks, tweakers and barber-haulers, means that virtually any line on the boat can be led to any winch.
Barber-hauling the staysail inboard while sailing upwind had an instant and significant effect, increasing our pointing by 8° and our speed by a good half-knot.
Mainsail handling is from the mast and can, if necessary, be managed manually and single-handed
Designed by experience
Compared with the owner’s previous boat, Polina Star is lighter, with greater form stability, a lighter rig (in carbon, by Hall Spars) and a lighter keel. An aluminium rig would call for a heavier keel, substantially increasing both weight and rolling.
For tradewind sailing, minimising rolling is important. Light-airs performance has been shown to be good: in 10 knots of wind at 50°, the crew has clocked 8.5-9 knots. Speeds like this make for fast passages.
Throughout the boat, weight and where it goes has been carefully considered. As you would expect, hull and deck are foam-cored. They’re also vacuum-infused, using Contest’s ‘single-shot’ system whereby the resin is introduced in one go. Interior joinery is foam-cored too.
Weight is concentrated where it’s needed. No chances have been taken with the massive matrix distributing the loads from the slim-sectioned, stainless steel-and-lead T-bulb keel.
On the other hand, if a little weight needs to be placed higher up in the interests of safety, it is. For example, the batteries, all cabling and the principal electrical components are 1.5m above the waterline to make sure they would continue to work in extremis. Similarly, navigation and communication systems use separate circuits from the domestics.
Safety features such as these are an integral part of the approach with Polina Star and were incorporated into the design from the outset. A boat of this size won’t be rolled by anything short of a tsunami, right?
An extended stern garage allows the 2.9m RIB (modified by Contest with a folding transom) to be stored fore-and-aft for easier launching. Also back here is a fully independent bilge pump that can be used as a fire hose at the flick of two valves
Even so, the sole boards are secured by catches because you wouldn’t want them floating up if the bilge were to flood. The bilge pump system has been paid particular attention, a central spine running the length of the hull – which has four watertight bulkheads – and ‘ribs’ also feeding into it from each side. Sensors outboard warn of bilge water when the boat’s heeled.
The level of detailed thought in the build of this yacht – and there’s much more in the bilge-pump system alone – is testament to the experience of the skipper and the owner and the preparedness and ability of Contest to work with them.
Essential elements aside, you might imagine that a luxury yacht of this size would be full of electronic wizardry. Naturally the systems are many and complex. Nonetheless, the belt-and-braces approach and the desire for manual back-up is evident throughout.
Nav area includes touch-screen displays for full management of the boat’s systems
Should the PLC (computerised control) system fail, every function can be activated manually via relays. Life will continue: a functional bilge pump is clearly vital but a cold beer is also still nice.
Down below, as on deck, minimising dependence on powered systems is a fundamental aspect of the design and what you see above deck is often a clue as to what’s below.
Substantial stainless steel rails around the six large dorade vents forward of the mast provide important handholds and foot-bracing points in an area that feels exposed on many boats.
The vents themselves ensure a through-flow of air down below such that the aircon has rarely been needed. One vent is right over the washing machine and tumble-drier in the crew’s quarters to save the need for an extractor fan.
Comfort on passage
Stylish and beautifully finished the Contest 85CS undoubtedly is. On Polina Star , the styling and detailing are combined with the owner’s wish for substance and functionality rather than a visual ‘wow’ factor that might quickly be forgotten as soon as the boat leaves port.
Changes from what Contest would offer as the norm – if there is a norm on a boat of this nature – can be seen in the cockpit arrangements. The original plans show a second, working cockpit for the crew abaft the main cockpit, so the wheels would be further aft.
As the centrepiece of the interior, the saloon does full justice to the build: the quality of finish and detailing is hard to fault
Below decks there’s inevitably an enormous choice of layouts. The arrangement in this case reflects the owner’s dislike of wide-open spaces except in the saloon, though even this is no dance floor and can be used at sea.
His cabin is in the stern and, because he likes cooking, so is the galley: close by and where the boat’s motion is felt least. You can wedge yourself in. Lockers, fridges and freezers (multiples of each, of course) can be opened safely on either tack and at any angle of heel. This sort of thinking, to make life easier and more comfortable on passage, is evident everywhere.
Forward of the saloon is a guest cabin and, to port, the crew’s quarters with bunks, showers, nav area and control centre, and full workshop facilities. The parts of the twin watermakers that need regular inspection and maintenance are here, while the noisy elements (the high-pressure pumps) are in the sound-deadened engine room.
Galley area, with U-shaped work surfaces and a secure area for the cook at sea
Having two identical watermakers means common spare parts and the ability to cannibalise one to repair the other if necessary.
The same goes for the twin Onan generators, which are also fitted with hydraulic pumps to send oil to the winches, furling systems, backstay, vang, bow-thruster and other hydraulically-operated systems.
In the bow, reached via a hatch on deck or through the door in the watertight bulkhead from the crew’s quarters, is the enormous sail locker.
From here the Code 0 and deep-cut gennaker can be hoisted to ensure Polina Star is carrying the right offwind sail for the apparent wind angle. Motoring is principally for entering and leaving anchorages; the rest of the time, this boat sails.
Mission accomplished
The detailed thought and practical experience that has gone into the conception, design and construction of Polina Star is on a scale that one rarely has the privilege to witness.
Many of the results are hidden: a boat show visitor would only see a tiny fraction of what makes this remarkable yacht what it is. One hopes that the safety features, only some of which we have covered here, will never be needed. They give the owner and crew the confidence to do what they want to do and go where they want to go.
The features that make Polina Star sail the way she does, that enable her to be handled by a small crew and that will keep her sailing the oceans while other boats are stuck in port waiting for technicians or spare parts to arrive, are what really set her apart.
We’re all familiar with tough, heavy-duty cruising yachts that will get you there in one piece while lacking a little sparkle. Race boats will get you there faster as long as you have more crew (and/or put in more effort), don’t mind the discomfort and manage not to break anything. With an 85-footer like Polina Star IV, you would hope that length alone would provide a fair measure of pace – and it does – but this is one seriously efficient sailing machine by cruising standards as well as being as bullet-proof as a slippery hulled modern yacht could possibly be. And she’s so enjoyable and responsive to sail: you really could take her for a spin around the bay just for the fun of it. This blend of robustness, reliability, performance and ease of handling makes the Contest 85CS an unusual and remarkable yacht.

We already know the Wally WHY200 is spacious—the 89-foot yacht has an interior the size of a larger 165-foot superyacht—but now we can confirm it is stylish, too.

As mentioned, the WHY200 offers the comfort and space of a larger vessel. A wide beam of 25 feet and a high profile ensure a generous interior volume of 200 GT. The main salon is the same width as that of a 160-footer, for instance. The unit in Singapore is the first to feature the “main deck entertainment” layout, which was designed specifically for the Asia Pacific (APAC) market. Her tall 15-foot glazed bow houses a spectacular living area with a large round table, a bar, a wine cellar, and sweeping panoramic views.
A one-piece laminated carbon staircase connects the main deck to the lower and upper decks. On the upper deck, Wally’s signature glass and carbon fiber dome is fitted with a plush lounge for relaxation. The extended, structural top has no supporting pillars to ensure the vistas are uninterrupted. The lower deck on this particular WHY200 is dedicated to guests, with a luxe owner’s cabin at the bow and two swanky guest cabins.
The exterior decks are replete with Loro Piana’s chic custom furniture and technical outdoor fabrics, which are resistant to salt, sunlight, and wind. The beach club, for example, features the Delight chairs Loro Piana designed with Exteta. The beach club is also fitted with fold-out terraces and two “invisible” garages for tenders and toys.
The first WHY200 and a wallypower58 will be on display Singapore Yachting Festival from April 25 to 28. Concurrently, another wallypower58 hull will be on show at the Palma International Boat Show in Spain from April 25 to 28.

Motor Yacht
The Redman Whiteley Dixon design of Hampshire II covers her remarkable exterior, and flows through to the interior. The 78.50 metre motor yacht was then brought to life by Feadship at their Makkum facilities before being launched in 2012.
Her owner, an experienced Feadship owner, entered the project with a clear vision of what he and his family were looking for – a nautical playground of unquestionable quality. Hampshire II was created to provide a platform of exploration, action and sport, featuring various creative design elements such as a helipad on the foredeck which converts into a basket ball, tennis, badminton and football court.
Each deck of Hampshire II features a diving board, and the 25 metre crows nest allows the owner to zipline to the water below. The exploration features aren’t just built in to the boat, but featured throughout the beach club area and garage which are stocked with windsurfing and diving equipment, mountain bikes and arsenal of toys and tenders.
The interiors themselves were designed to the specific brief of traditional yachting feel without introducing the look of a hotel or a New York apartment. Features include real log fire, an extraordinary bar on the bridge deck, a stunning wine cellar with underwater viewing window and private cinema on the lower deck.

Hampshire II sports five guestrooms and one owner's suite, which have a combined capacity to house a maximum of 14. It also features separate accommodation for its 21 plus two staff members in 14 crew cabins.
Among the various other features of the superyacht include a beach club with two platforms, an English style bar on the bridge deck, and a teak-finished helipad which can be converted into a playing field.
A distinguishing element of the vessel is its helicopter landing platform on the foredeck, which can be converted into a playing field for basketball, tennis, baseball, badminton as well as football.
The vessel's superstructure is made of aluminium while its hull is in steel. The yacht is powered by a pair of MTU 16V4000M53R engines which offer it a top speed of 16 knots. Its range is 5,500 nautical miles at 12 knots.

Moscow is Russia's capital city and is the largest city in the country. As of January 1, 2010, Moscow's population was 10,562,099, which also makes it one of the top ten largest cities in the world. Because of its size, Moscow is one of the most influential cities in Russia and dominates the country in politics, economics, and culture among other things. Moscow is located in Russia's Central Federal District along the Moskva River and covers an area of 417.4 square miles (9,771 sq km).
The following is a list of ten things to know about Moscow: 1) In 1156 the first references to the construction of a wall around a growing city called Moscow began to appear in Russian documents as did descriptions of the city being attacked by the Mongols in the 13th century. Moscow was first made a capital city in 1327 when it was named the capital of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality. It later became known as the Grand Duchy of Moscow. 2) Throughout much of the rest of its history, Moscow was attacked by rival empires and armies. In the 17th century a large part of the city was damaged during citizen uprisings and in 1771 much of Moscow's population died due to the plague. Shortly thereafter in 1812, Moscow's citizens (called Muscovites) burned the city during Napoleon 's invasion. 3) After the Russian Revolution in 1917, Moscow became the capital of what would eventually become the Soviet Union in 1918. During World War II, however, a large portion of the city suffered damage from bombings. Following WWII, Moscow grew but instability continued in the city during the fall of the Soviet Union . Since then, though, Moscow has become more stable and is a growing economic and political center of Russia.
4) Today, Moscow is a highly organized city located on the banks of the Moskva River. It has 49 bridges crossing the river and a road system that radiates in rings out from the Kremlin in the city's center. 5) Moscow has a climate with humid and warm to hot summers and cold winters. The hottest months are June, July, and August while the coldest is January. The average high temperature for July is 74°F (23.2°C) and the average low for January is 13°F (-10.3°C). 6) The city of Moscow is governed by one mayor but it is also broken down into ten local administrative divisions called okrugs and 123 local districts. The ten okrugs radiate out around the central district which contains the city's historic center, Red Square, and the Kremlin. 7) Moscow is considered the center of Russian culture because of the presence of many different museums and theaters in the city. Moscow is home to the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and the Moscow State Historical Museum. It is also home to Red Square which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . 8) Moscow is well-known for its unique architecture which consists of many different historic buildings such as Saint Basil's Cathedral with its brightly colored domes. Distinctive modern buildings are also beginning to be constructed throughout the city.
9) Moscow is considered one of the largest economies in Europe and its main industries include chemicals, food, textiles, energy production, software development, and furniture manufacturing. The city is also home to some of the world's largest companies. 10) In 1980, Moscow was the host of the Summer Olympics and thus has a variety of different sports venues that are still used by the many sports teams within the city. Ice hockey, tennis, and rugby are some popular Russian sports. Reference Wikipedia. (2010, March 31). "Moscow." Moscow- Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia . Restaurant-Yacht Chaika
Ratings and reviews, location and contact.
Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!
Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.
everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical
Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing
Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More
Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More
This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.
I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More
Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.
Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!
Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.
Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More
Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!
I've been here several times during two business trip in Moscow. The overall quality for both service and food is absolutely top-notch, plus the location is very unique.

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.
Had a large group dinner here. Food was above average and service quite good. The real attraction is the view of Moscow from the river on a nice night. Great place for a larger group dinner. More

Couple who live on a yacht admit it's not all plain sailing
- Laura, 43, and Ross Colledge, 39, from Cornwall ditched their regular jobs
- READ MORE: I quit my job as a midwife to become an interiors influencer after turning my magnolia cottage into a pastel pink paradise
A British couple have packed in their overworked schedules to live on a 42ft yacht -but it's not all plain sailing.
Having grown tired of their 9-5s, Laura, 43, and Ross Colledge, 39, from Cornwall, decided to sell their house and splashed out on a £100,000 yacht.
For the last five years, the pair have been sailing around the Greek islands with their two sons, nine-year-old Noah and Josh, 12, who are unconventionally schooled.
After buying their 2005 Bavaria 42 yacht in 2018, the couple began darting between Newquay and Plymouth to sharpen their boating skills, and since ended up further afield.
But the bold move has not come without struggles with Laura admitting: 'Sailing life is very changeable so getting a work/life balance is tricky. Maintaining any kind of routine is a challenge.
'You have to be able to "go chameleon" when the weather or other circumstances demand a change of plan'.
She added that it can take its toll on relationships too, saying: 'Sailing life is a 24/7 pressure cooker at times and you not only have to learn to pick your battles, but also where you will and will not compromise.'
That said, the couple would not swap their new lifestyle for the world after becoming disillusioned with the hectic pace of life in the UK.
Laura and Ross, who are directors of Sailing Holly Blue on YouTube and BoatFit Online Health and Fitness Coaching, decided to take the leap after reevaluating their lives.
The former PT and online coach said Ross was working in excess of 50 hours a week as a partner in a fire installation company.
'We were like ships in the night,' she said. 'Ross felt our children's formative years were slipping away before our eyes and he was missing so much.
'We wanted to be able to better meet Josh's extra educational needs, as he has ADHD and is suspected high-functioning autistic, while providing them with an exciting, adventurous, non-consumerist upbringing that would make them more worldly'.
'Ross remortgaged our newly-renovated house and took a gamble on a boat we'd stepped on and loved a few months earlier, when we were just browsing marinas.
'We have both been water babies as surfers and kayakers in Newquay for many years so the ocean has always drawn us in.'
The plan was for Laura to fly to Cyprus with the boys while Ross began a three-month sail to meet them from the UK.
Ross said: 'Laura has fibromyalgia, which is a Central Nervous System condition triggered by stress, so we originally wanted an ocean-based life to be healthier on the whole.
'But while Laura and the boys were in Cyprus she experienced a massive flare-up due to the stress of leaving our old life and me navigating dangerous seas.
'She had to spend a couple of weeks in hospital'.
In the end, the couple changed their plan and decided to meet in Greece in June 2019 so they could be back together sooner.
They fell in love with the country and never left.
Laura said: 'We started our journey as a family in Mykonos. We sailed through the Aegean and Dodecanese Islands and eventually came to find a slower pace of sailing life here in the Ionian Islands'.
Over the course of their five-year adventure, Laura and Ross have upgraded and renovated their yacht.
She continued: 'Some of it has been self-funded but most of it has been through collaborations with our channel and social media accounts.
'We have completed numerous upgrades to improve our living experience. We've included solar power, lithium ion batteries, a watermaker and other mod-cons that mean we can live completely off grid, utility bill-free and self-sufficient if we choose'.
Ross is captain of the family's boat and Laura is first mate.
Noah is currently homeschooled, while Josh attends an online virtual secondary school.
The family has expanded with addition of their two cats Ronnie and Smidge – whom they adopted while on their travels in Greece.
And their adventure is only just starting.
She added: 'Once we achieve residency here in Greece we plan to spread our wings further afield.
'One day we would love a bigger boat as the boys become teens and we start to run out of room'.
As for their mental health, the mother says there's 'nothing more grounding than being so close to nature and at the mercy of elements.
'All other things become so trivial. And relationship-wise, you will soon learn if the person you are with is your soulmate.
'Your relationship deepens to an incredible level and your respect, as well as admiration for each other strengthens too.
'It's also great to be able to choose who we socialise with and when.
'The boys have friends, young and old, from all over the world.'
