Guide to Dubrovnik

A city steeped in ancient beauty and unique history

Straddling the glittering Adriatic, Dubrovnik is one of the highlights of a Croatia yacht charter vacation. An up-and-coming destination for luxury yachts, Dubrovnik entices charterers with its flavour-forward dining scene, selection of buzzy bars and ample cultural sites, offset by white sandy beaches and bijou islets.

When arriving by yacht, Dubrovnik looks like something lifted from a postcard. Clay red roofs bake under a bright sun, pellucid turquoise water laps the shore and Aleppo pines coat the hills which frame the city. All of these beguiling features have worked to create a destination that is truly unmissable on an Mediterranean yacht charter .

Dubrovnik’s central marina for superyachts is ACI marina, a modern harbour equipped with all of the latest amenities and the capacity host yachts measuring up to 75m. The marina is tucked into the crook of a canal on the edge of Dubrovnik, treating yacht-goers to a glimpse of the city’s beauty before they set foot on shore. The canal is lined by palm trees and sheltered by a rugged, mountainous landscape.

Dubrovnik is replete with culture and history, evident in the Medieval walls that border the sea, the limestone streets that snake through the city and baroque architecture that carves out the Old Town. Cultural highlights include the Gothic mansion of Rector’s Palace and the famous fortress of Lovrijenac, which sits atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. At the highest point of the city, the former 14th-century citadel of Tvrđava Minčeta stands guard, looming over Dubrovnik.

Charter guests in Dubrovnik would be remiss not to sample the wines of Croatia. Vino hailing from the Dalmation regions tends to be fruit-infused, light and perfect paired with cured meats, cheese and fresh seafood. Luckily, Dubrovnik is home to plenty of wine bars, laid-back bistros and upscale fish restaurants that will appeal to any palate.

One of the favoured restaurants in Dubrovnik among yacht-goers is 360, a sophisticated venue with incredible views over the marina and the shimmering ocean. Other favourites include Nautika, another popular establishment that specialises in catch-fresh seafood with a fine dining energy.

Charter guests will fall in love with Dubrovnik on a crewed yacht charter . If you’d like to learn more about planning your dream yacht charter vacation in this alluring Adriatic region, you can take a look at all luxury yachts for private yacht charters in Croatia.

WHEN TO CHARTER IN DUBROVNIK

Whenever you want! Dubrovnik is a city with a typical Mediterranean climate, mild winters and warm and dry summers. Winters in Dubrovnik are pleasant, and the average daily temperature is around 10°C (50℉), but for a truly beautiful yacht charter in Dubrovnik, we recommend the months between April and November.

This period we can divide into three parts: The “Heart” of the season – July and August, the middle season – May, June and September and the low season – April and November.

The heart of the season is ideal for those who like to enjoy hot summers and busy cities. What is great is that you can always find a secluded bay with your yacht charter in Dubrovnik and enjoy 100% privacy, even on the busiest day of the year. Furthermore, during this period you will have the opportunity to attend the Dubrovnik Summer Festival – one of the most important cultural festivals in Croatia.

During the mid-season, beaches are not too crowded and the temperature is ideal for both kids and adults. The days are sunny and the sea temperature is perfect. For guests who do not like mingling too much, this is the perfect time for a yacht charter in Dubrovnik.

And the low season is when the temperatures are around 18 to 21°C (65 to 70 degrees °F) which are ideal for charter guests who do not prefer over-the-top weather conditions. Winds in Dubrovnik are mild and the sea is peaceful. This time of the year is amazing if you want to explore the real Dubrovnik and witness every street, cathedral and island in all their glory.

HOW TO GET TO DUBROVNIK

The best way to arrive to your yacht charter in Dubrovnik is by plane or a private jet. The well-connected Dubrovnik airport has a direct line from the USA, as well as from a lot of European cities. Furthermore, your yacht can wait for you in the small city of Cavtat which is just a few minutes away from the airport and a few minutes of cruising from Dubrovnik.

If you decide to come by car, you should ask your local broker – SuperYachts Croatia , to reserve a parking slot for you, since Dubrovnik is swamped by road traffic in the heart of the season. In addition, if you do not want to think about transport, SuperYachts Croatia will arrange everything for you – your plane, car and yacht will be waiting for you whenever you want.

The Walls of Dubrovnik used to be a powerful defence system, but today they are a unique cultural and historical heritage of Dubrovnik . They are the biggest tourist attraction and the most popular part of the city. It is an even better experience when you can explore them in peace, with an easy walk alongside two kilometres of groomed trails, while also watching your magical yacht charter next to them.

The Walls are one of the most monumental fortifications in Europe, and the construction of the first fortresses began in the 8th century. More intensive construction lasted from the middle of the 15th to the end of the 16th century, and although they were hit by an earthquake in 1667, the walls were not damaged too much.

Historic walls surround the city in the shape of an irregular polygon, and you will be able to experience 16 towers and bastions, as well as a total of five fortresses: Micčeta, St.John, Bokar, Lovrijenac and Revelin. The unique and stunning Walls of Dubrovnik were recognized by UNESCO , which included them on the World Heritage List .

The Venetians are long gone, but this dessert is still here, with traces of influences from French cuisine. It is a caramelized shell in which rožata is cooked and the main ingredient is a rose liqueur. OUR SUGGESTED SEVEN-DAY YACHT CHARTER IN DUBROVNIK

A yacht charter in Dubrovnik is once in a lifetime experience, especially with a local yacht broker who will show you the best spots known only to the local experiences, and create unique yachting experiences for you and your charter guests.

Yacht Charter in Dubrovnik cruising map

Day 1: Dubrovnik – Lokrum island

On the first day of your yacht charter in Dubrovnik, we recommend spending some time near the city of Dubrovnik, where you can explore its surroundings by yacht or on foot. This Pearl of the Adriatic will leave you speechless, thanks to its magical old town.

Moreover, you can anchor your yacht near the island of Lokrum and enjoy a magical view of Dubrovnik`s old town. You will be able to experience a picnic on Lokrum island, which is the perfect getaway place for Dubrovnik`s locals and their guests.

The island of Lokrum is declared a special reserve under the protection of UNESCO, with a botanical garden containing an enviable collection of eucalyptus and cactus, as well as beautiful gardens and parks. Walk slowly through the vegetation and refresh yourself in the shade of black ash or rest under the swaying treetops of Aleppo pine.

Moreover, this island has a salty lake in its centre, in which you can jump from a 10m high rock. This is a perfect Instagramable spot, with rare animal species like protected turtles and peacocks.

Yacht charter in Dubrovnik

Day 2: Lopud island- Šipan island

Lopud is the most developed among the Elaphite Islands , a small archipelago containing several isles located northwest of Dubrovnik. It is also the second-largest in terms of size, while a favourable climate allows for nearly 2600 hours of sunshine each year.

A mild climate has led to the development of lush and rich Mediterranean and subtropical vegetation with lemons, oranges, pines, cypresses and palm trees. Your local yacht captain will want to take you to Šunj – a sandy beach considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the Croatian Adriatic sea. The sandy shoal of this beach stretches a few hundred meters from the shore, which makes the bay ideal for a family yacht charter in Dubrovnik.

Yacht charter in Dubrovnik

Day 3: The Island of Šipan –  Pelješac peninsula

The biggest island of the Elaphite archipelago is Šipan, which is also listed in the Guinness Book of Records for the biggest ratio of olive trees to the population of its total area, is a must-see during your yacht charter in Dubrovnik.

A lot of people from Dubrovnik come to this magical island because of the astonishing restaurant Bowa, where you can berth your yacht and enjoy delicious food. This attractive restaurant is located right by the sea, with tables under the canopies set on charming oak and fir constructions which makes it an inviting place for a meal. Swim, sunbathe and have fun with your water toys while waiting for the food.

After lunch, we recommend a visit to the city of Ston on the Pelješac peninsula . The “City of Salt” will amaze you with its rich history and numerous attractions. As soon as you step into Ston, you will feel as if you have travelled back into the distant past; tradition is woven into every stone and building.

While spending time in Ston, visit the famous saltworks, one of the three saltworks in Croatia, and the oldest in Europe, dating back to the 14th century. It was formed after the Republic of Ragusa bought Ston in the year 1333. Ston was surrounded by defensive walls, which are a popular attraction and by length, second only to the Great Wall of China.

Moreover, if you opt for swimming, sunbathing or playing with water toys, we recommend you anchor in the famous Prapratno bay. This is one of the most beautiful bays in this part of Pelješac, with a long sandy beach in an area overgrown with pine forests.

Yacht charter in Dubrovnik

Day 4 – Pelješac peninsula – Mljet National Park

The island of Mljet is the most forested of all the Croatian Adriatic islands, and unquestionably, one of the most attractive. It is perfect for enjoying the beauty of untouched nature that will enchant everyone who visits this enchanting isle. Mljet is an island of mystery, with rich forests, beautiful beaches and an incredibly blue sea, ideal for enjoying pristine nature.

You can ride an e-bike through the National Park or just enjoy an al-fresco dining experience on the Greenest Croatian island. Here, you can explore the Veliko lake, with an islet of St. Mary and a church and monastery founded in the 12th century by the Benedictines of Monte Gargano in Italy. Alternative targets for exploration also are the Malo lake and the Odysseus Cave .

Yacht charter in Dubrovnik

Day 5 -Mljet National Park – Lastovo Island

A small and inhabited island, Lastovo is the perfect place for those looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday, in untouched and beautiful nature. Lastovo island has a mild Mediterranean climate and due to its good position, it has more than 2700 hours of sunshine a year.

Lastovo also has the starriest sky in Europe and if you embark on a yacht charter in Dubrovnik during the summer, you will be able to see one of the most beautiful astronomical phenomena – the Perseid meteor shower . Make a wish and enjoy this beautiful island.

For swimming and snorkelling, we recommend the Porto Rosso beach complemented with a nautical centre and a great restaurant, ideal for yacht charter guests. Lastovo also harbours one of the oldest lighthouses in the Croatian Adriatic.

Yacht charter in Dubrovnik

Day 6: Island of Lastovo – Island of Korčula

You will feel as if you have stepped back in time when you arrive on the i sland of Korčula , which has been inhabited since prehistoric times. This is the sixth-largest island in Croatia and is truly worth visiting and exploring. The city of Korčula is surrounded by 13th-century walls and it is one of the best-preserved fortified medieval towns in Croatia.

Until the beginning of the 18th century, it was forbidden to build outside the city walls, and visitors entered via a wooden drawbridge. Another fun fact about Korčula is that Marco Polo , one of the world’s biggest historical travellers, was born on this island and spent his childhood in one of the houses that are still there.

Korčula is not only a historical place; it has a lot of stunning beaches and bays where you can spend your yacht charter vacation in Croatia peacefully. If you are ready for the perfect Instagram place – swing on a swing on Moro beach. If you prefer sandy beaches, seek out Vela Pržina and Bilin Žal. Finally, for one of the most beautiful islets in the world, according to the New York Times , visit Proizd – only a few minutes from Korčula.

If you are looking for a good restaurant on this amazing island, let your charter crew reserve a table in LD Terrace – a Michelin starred restaurant.

Yacht charter in Split

Day 7: Island of Korčula – City of Dubrovnik

On your last day,  cruise back from Korčula to Dubrovnik . You can always ask your yacht captain to stop on a stunning beach or an isolated bay for a swim or one last ride with some of the water toys. When you arrive back in Dubrovnik, your local broker at SuperYachts Croatia can arrange transportation to the airport for you or if you want to stay in Croatia – we can book another yacht to continue your perfect yacht charter vacation.

Unwind & Reconnect: Your Dubrovnik Luxury Yacht Escape

Its natural beauty and rich history with the seductive charm of a balmy Mediterranean climate and coastal scenery of incomparable beauty make this UNESCO World Heritage Site one of the most beloved and visited Mediterranean destinations

Dubrovnik seems to be born from the palette of a painter who wanted to use warmer color gradients for creating a landscape that enchants the visitor at the first sight. For many centuries, this Adriatic Pearl was an independent Republic, a proud cultural center, and essential Mediterranean trading power.

From its sun-kissed terracotta rooftops to its emerald green hills, Dubrovnik’s palette is a feast for the eyes. The city’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a labyrinth of narrow, cobblestone streets lined with pastel-hued houses and adorned with ornate stonework. As you stroll along the city’s promenade, let the warm Adriatic breeze and breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and islands wash over you.

Although no longer politically independent, its natural beauty and rich history with the seductive charm of a balmy Mediterranean climate and coastal scenery of incomparable beauty make this UNESCO World Heritage Site one of the most beloved and most visited Mediterranean destinations .

city stairs old town Dubrovnik

Rare are the cities that can boast a comparable location or equally well-preserved medieval walls. The enchantment starts with the panoramic view of the Old Town of Dubrovnik, from the winding road that brings you to town from the airport.

Dubrovnik is a living museum , a treasure of Baroque, Renaissance, and medieval churches and palaces. Minčeta, Bokar, Lovrijenac are just some of the beautiful forts and towers that surround the city, but for visitors, the City Port with the statue of St. Vlaho, city patron, is the best entry point into this treasure, this former city-state and symbol of freedom.

You will also soon learn really fast that the steps and stairs are part of Dubrovnik’s charm, and we love them, or at least we don’t mind them that much. Believe it or not, Dubrovnik is the city with the most stairs on the Mediterranean. There are 4.343 steps within the perimeter of the city wall and 1.080 steps on the wall itself, making the grand total of 5.423.

For locals, these stairs are a place to unwind with friends on a late summer night, a place to wait before meeting someone. Don’t be surprised if you see them chilling by shop windows, talking and laughing loudly, for this all represents the carefree city spirit.

rectors palaca at Dubrovnik

In the morning, you’ll see the locals visit open markets, not just for food, but also in hope accidentally happen upon a familiar face and have an excuse to sit down for coffee and gossip.

The most luxurious Croatian destination – Dubrovnik: Just for a walk

Another local tradition is going to Stradun – just for a walk, but every evening, starting at Pile, then to Orlando, and then back the Onofrio water fountain… and then repeat for two or three times. Make sure you’re wearing your best clothes, for there’ll be many fashion-savvy eyes on you, judging from the nearby restaurants and cafes.

If catwalk isn’t your thing, there are plenty of backstreets downtown. The alternative is Gundulić square, dominated by a statue of one of the city’s most famous poets. The square is always busy, transforming itself like a chameleon many times throughout the day. The ‘green market’, as the locals call it, offers freshly picked produce and jars of homemade jams, pickles, and spices. Dubrovnik’s famous delicacies are: kotonjata (quince jelly), arancini (sugar-coated orange peel), bruštulani mjenduli (sugar-coated almonds), dried figs.

tower lovrijenac old town Dubrovnik

And as the final bell echoes across the city, endless flocks of seagulls glided down onto the market that was busy just until a few minutes earlier. The reason for this invasion: feeding time. The birds are fed from buckets full of corn whose contents are dispersed all over the square. The feeding frenzy lasts for just a few short minutes, and normality is restored. Every day, come rain or shine, the city’s pigeons are fed in Gundulić Square, always at the same time, paid for by the city council.

As the last feathers fly away, the square enters its afternoon phase, and the clink of coffee cups and the popping of wine corks can be heard as Dubrovnik’s alfresco lunchtime begins. The coolest drink around is the fresh water from the Onofrio water fountains, built in 1440 and designed by Onofrio della Cava.

Italian builders della Cava and Andreucio have two years earlier erected an unbelievable 11-km long aqueduct, bringing water to the city from the nearby Šumet and other forest springs outside the city walls. The two fountains remained the only source of potable water in the city for the following four centuries, and were considered so crucial to the functioning of the city that the punishment for contaminating water was cutting off of a hand.

We assume there weren’t that many attempts. The fountains today are among the most important symbols of the city, especially the Small fountain, right next to the Summer games stage. This event takes place every year from July 10 and August 25, and during those seven weeks of high summer, Dubrovnik gives its heart and soul to the Arts.

Cobbled streets, Baroque palaces and Renaissance piazzas set the magical setting for concerts and live theater performances. The locals have always been savvy merchants and had smart rulers made giving back to the city part of the city charter, which now reflects in the city’s architecture and cultural heritage.

What better way to get to know the culture and history of the country, city , or village you are visiting than exploring the artifacts, arts, and stories shown and told in their museums. The House of Marin Držić is undoubtedly one of the must-visit museums in Dubrovnik. Držić was a world-famous 16th-century playwright, poet, and one of the key authors of the European Renaissance comedy.

His works abound in clashes of the traditional and the modern, fiction and reality, the comic and the tragic, and are an important legacy to the whole European and world comedy scene. They were also somewhat controversial at the time, as he portrayed current events and political situations through comedy and railed against the authorities. In Držić’s honor and memory, his birth house – downtown in the Old Town, in Široka Street adjacent to the Domino Church- is now a museum dedicated to his life and works.

sea view at tower minčeta Dubrovnik Yacht Charter Guide

He was a man ahead of his time, and his literary works remain fresh and interesting today, so make sure you visit the museum and the museum shop, where you can find unique souvenirs like English translations of Držić’s books. At the same time smaller than Držić and equally as big is another art or trade honed to perfection by the locals: filigree. The tradition of spinning gold wire into minute jewelry still thrives, and locally made ‘rečini’ (earrings) or ‘puce’ (decorative buttons) you purchase in Dubrovnik will forever remind you of your time there.

Gold, silver and coral jewelry is fascinating for its timeless beauty and artistry, and the local design matches all fashion styles, traditional or modern. At their Old Town workshops, goldsmiths Vierda, Kraljević and Jurišić still manufacture the world-famous pieces using age-old methods. Another local artisan tradition still kept alive are barbershops. In this golden age of the barbershop revival, find old-fashioned atmosphere waiting for you at Placa 15 near Stradun.

Banje beach at Dubrovnik Yacht Charter Guide

As soon as you walk into the shop, you will find yourself fully absorbed in the fragrance of traditional soap, aftershave, various hair and face tonics, oils, neck powders, in this small, cozy, almost familiar atmosphere where friends share all the latest gossip. City beaches are always popular during the hot summer months, and the two with the best view of the Old Town are Banje i Sv. Jakov.

Kolorina lagoon is located between the fortress Lovrijenac and Gradac Park, local people call it Šulić according to the family whose house sits at the beach entrance. Mostly locals enjoy this beach, rare foreigners stray there, which is not a surprise since the entrance to the beach is not easy to find as it looks like a doorway of a private home.

The beach offers amazing vista towards the fortress Lovrijenac rising on the left side of the lagoon and the right side views amazing cliffs of the Gradac Park with intriguing stone houses of the artist Jagoda Buić at the foot of the cliffs.

Island of Lopud Monastery 1483

If you want to cool down with the locals, you’ll have to go all the way to the isle of Lokrum , or to the Šunj beach at Lopud, where you can their summer water polo league, be it as a player, or one of the obsessed spectators. Or you can sail around Dubrovnik and discover beautiful Elaphiti islands .  When choosing a yacht in charter , you first need to decide whether you want to feel the meditative power of silence on board sailing boat and catamaran , or whether you appreciate speed and comfort, with interest to rent a motorboat or luxury yacht . After that, leave all the ‘details’ to us. We will pay special attention to all your needs, to select the boat up to your wishes, to feel safe and comfortable with the crew that will make your time special, organize provisioning and prepare the route that will leave you breathless!

If you find yourself in Dubrovnik mid-August, you should definitely go take a look at this unique demonstration of competitive spirit and adventurous approach to sports. The Wild League, as the call this recreational water polo league, is a summer league that gathers teams representing different Dubrovnik beaches. It has been an essential part of Dubrovnik’s summer tradition since 1949. It is more than a hobby, more than a pastime, more than a sport. It’s something that Dubrovnik men grew up with and something they gladly pass on to their kids.

Thoughtfully selected music, a rustic interior, fine indigenous food and a spacious terrace complimented with natural shade have all secured Sesame restaurant a high spot on the scale of top, Dubrovnik, fine dining establishments. Even though this gastro-paradise is located in the city centre, near Lovrijenac fortress and Danče beach, it is still relieved of the pulsating, tourist turmoil. Sesame used to be a gathering spot for bohemian souls of Dubrovnik, holding jazz parties at the weekends.

Today, it represents a cherished destination for domestic and foreign enthusiasts of good music, food and drink. Furthermore, the restaurant’s interior design boasts an elegant, museum-like ambience. Heirlooms, artefacts, antiquities, framed newspaper articles of yesteryear and photos of the Dubrovnik olden days adorn this lovely place.

Another hot spot enjoys the world’s bella vista – cliff-location, right above the sea surface with a clear view stretching across the Adriatic. At the end of the city’s alley-loop, behind the Dubrovnik cathedral, a miniature gateway in the city walls leads to the bar and the beach at the bottom.

Dubrovnik Buza Bar

If water polo isn’t your thing, take a stroll to the small soccer and basketball court smack in the heart of the city, crowned as the most beautiful court in the world by Architectural Digest. In Dubrovnik, savoring a cup of coffee can be a form of meditation – part of a relaxed Dalmatian way of being known as ‘fjaka’. Coffee is more than caffeine – it’s a traditional way of life. When meeting Dubrovnik locals, you will often hear ‘ajmo na kavu’ (let’s have a cup of coffee) – even though you may end up drinking something else – an invitation that involves chatting for hours and dressing nicely. So take a seat, enjoy your coffee and enjoy Dubrovnik .

Ride up to the top of the Mount of Srđ and enjoy the Old Town, the Adriatic Sea, nearby islands , and a coffee or cocktail. If you are a sunset lover, the golden hour would be your time to visit. Famous and free. Allegedly cursed. The place of stories, mysteries, and legends. Mother Nature has always reigned supreme here.

Untouched for centuries, Lokrum is a Nature Reserve and a Special Forest Vegetation Reserve, inhabited only by rabbits and peacocks introduced to the island in the 19th century by the Austrian archduke Maximilian. He also started an exotic botanical garden. Once home to Benedictine monks, this island was also a legendary haven for Richard the Lion Heart. Today Lokrum remains a sanctuary – a perfect, crowd-free summer getaway for the people of Dubrovnik.

dubrovnik city walls

Rocky beaches lead the way towards the virgin clear waters. A touch of history will leave you breathless with fortress Fort Royal, abandoned Benedictine monastery or a small botanical garden. Lokrum hosts Maximilian’s summer villa, built by the Habsburgs at the end of the 19.ct, becoming popular after serving as a scenario spot in the top serial The Game of Thrones.

Lokrum is an ideal spot for those who seek tourist-free zones providing an undisturbed private nest inside the bare rocks, naturists’ favourable destination. A genuine experience is also floating in the salty lake connected to the sea.

Answers to Your Queries

Dubrovnik is a living museum, a treasure of Baroque, Renaissance, and medieval churches and palaces. Coffeehouses on Stradun, a stroll along the city walls, a visit to the Rector’s Palace or performances during Dubrovnik Summer Games are must-do activities when visiting beautiful Dubrovnik.

We would say that spending 3 days in the Dubrovnik is the absolute minimum. You’ll spend at least 2 days just sight-seeing, 1 extra for museums, beaches and restaurants. If you want to stay longer, charter a yacht and sail to the Elaphiti islands.

High season in Croatia runs from June through August and is the most popular time to visit Dubrovnik. If you want to escape the crowd, April to mid-June and mid-September to mid-October are the best choices.

Yacht Charter Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik was once centre of one of the major empires of the Mediterranean called the Ragusan Empire and was a force to be reckoned with for 700 years. Napoleon Bonaparte destroyed the power base in the early 1800s before his own defeat when it then came under the Austro-Hungarian Empire followed by Yugoslavia before independence came in the 1990s.

Unlike Split, Dubrovnik was targeted in the civil war of the 1990s, being shelled heavily and much of its original Old Town was destroyed. When peace came Croatia invested heavily in its rebuilding and while largely the old walls, cathedral and various palaces' survived shelling, much of what you see is rebuilt and is now a Unesco world heritage site. If you have time do take the cable car up Mount Srd to enjoy the panoramic views and see the Museum of the Croatian War of Independence at the top.

Even so, the Old Town of Dubrovnik is no caricature of its former self but a living, breathing artefact of Middle Ages architecture. Many who know Croatia view it as one of the crown jewels of the Adriatic. If you have the time then consider spending a night or two in a hotel in the city before or after your yacht charter, you won't be disappointed.

There are two major yacht marinas that serve Dubrovnik - ACI Dubrovnik and nearby ACI Veljko Barbieri Slano - from where you can head off on your sailing adventures northwest and up through the Croatian islands and along its coastline.

Explore Dubrovnik By Renting A Yacht

Thanks to its old status as a major trading hub for the Adriatic, Dubrovnik has a rich maritime history and a beautiful port. Do visit the ancient forts that were built to defend the city, and relax near the Orlando Fountain on the Placa and watch the world go by.

You can hire boats or do a short day sail to the Elafiti Islands (Elaphiti islands) just offshore. Three of the six main islands are inhabited with just 1,000 full time inhabitants between them with plenty of secluded beaches. Two are car-free, enabling you to walk or cycle without the noise and worry of traffic. These have a reputation of producing great sailors who plied the seas near and far for many a century.

Being close to the southern tip of Croatia, almost every destination in Croatia you will visit will be somewhere to the north of the city. Within a week's range depending on your boat is the other major historic city of Split and even the Kornati Islands with their national park should nature be your thing.

Further afield in the north is Zadar and once you leave southern Dalmatia, the landscape changes and it is generally less busy.

How To Get To Dubrovnik

There are a number of daily direct flights to Dubrovnik from London, Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham. The airport also now has well developed international links from most other major European hubs and countries. Once in Croatia you will then need to take a taxi or shuttle bus into the city if headed to ACI Dubrovnik or a taxi ride to ACI Slano if you're boat rental is based there

Marinas In Dubrovnik

There are two major marinas serving Dubrovnik, these are ACI Marina Dubrovnik and ACI Marina Slano . These are easily accessed from the local airport, and have a large number of yachts for charter based at each.

ACI Dubrovnik: The state owned marina ACI Dubrovnik is just 6 kilometres from the Old Town with good all round facilities and a supermarket on site for provisioning with taxis and buses available which run between the old town and the marina.

Berth Characteristics:

Max Length 75 m

Max Draught 5 m

There's also a restaurant/bar along with waste collection services and laundry services.

ACI Marina Slano: ACI Veljko Barbieri Slano is 35km away from Dubrovnik old town while still in Dubrovnik county. Though quieter than ACI Dubrovnik this is in an extemely pretty part of the adriatic away from the tourist hordes with plenty of amazing walks. Taxis are available to travel between the old town and the marina

Max Length 25 m

Max Draught 13 m

There's a supermarket and restaurant here for replenishing stocks along with laundry services if needed.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Dubrovnik

There are multiple options available on your boat charter from Dubrovnik, below we list a of the main areas to consider. Depending on if you want silence and the sound of nature or a more human, energetic vibe on a Dubrovnik yacht charter you can have both those needs met. One of the main things to take into account with sailing in Croatia is that because of the amount of islands and the relatively short distance between the sailing, it is primarily line of sight with plenty of island hopping available along this part of the Adriatic sea

Dubrovnik To Korcula: Cruise up to Kortula from Dubrovnik working your way along the Croatian coast or via the island of Mljet while taking in the very best of the Adriatic.

Dubrovnik to Split : Depending on your boat type this is possible but you'll need a fast boat (the two towns are around 300 kilometres apart) and you won't be stopping much along the way. One popular stop along this route is Hvar if you fancy some bustling nightlife or the quieter Pakleni islands which are close by but there are plenty of other Dalmatian islands with secluded coves along the way if you fancy a stop before this.

Types Of Yachts To Hire In Dubrovnik:

Both of the marinas that serve Dubrovnik can serve vessels of up to 40 metres. That means you have almost the full range of yachts to charter out of the city.

Motor Cruiser: These can range from a 10 metre boat that a family of four can bareboat charter or motor yacht to a 40 metre superyacht where you can relax and have every wish catered to by the crew. As a mid-range option we also list a number of motor catamarans that are spacious yet can be bareboat chartered as well.

Sailing Catamaran: A sailing catamaran will have a lot of space and things like en suite showers and heads in every cabin. They have twin engines in the hulls, allowing for great manoeuvrability in port, and are very quick when the wind is aft of the beam.

Monohull Sailing Yacht: Ranging in size from a modest, 10 metre vessel that can accommodate a group of six comfortably yet at a reasonable price to a 20 metre luxury yacht , you can find a monohull to suit every need for your sailing holiday.

Speedboat: These are day boats without cabins and can be used for fishing or simply getting out to the Elafiti Islands on a day trip. Some are very quick on the water - others more suitable for a harbour tour.

Do You Need A Licence To Hire A Yacht In Dubrovnik

If you are on a gulet or skippered yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Dubrovnik. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the dalmatian coast and local islands.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Dubrovnik, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted in Croatia and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Dubrovnik

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. The ACI Marina chain also adds 20% to their berthing fees at this time of year. If you can charter outside of the peak period you will find it far quieter and less expensive. When a cruise ship is docked in Dubrovnik, its passengers will fill the Old Town. If you can time your visit outside of the times cruise ships are in, then you will find your visit to the city a lot more relaxed. The climate is mild most of the sailing season with occasional rain showers.

Sailing Weather In Dubrovnik

April and May: There will be occasional rainy days but temperatures sit between 22-28C or higher. Winds are generally NW, 10-20 knots

June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat! Temperatures are from 26C and up to the mid 30s. Wind are generally NW 5-10 knots

September-October: In this part of the world it rains more in October and the temperature falls away to 10 degrees C in the evenings, though it can get up to a comfortable 20C on an autumn day. Winds can get up to 20 knots.

Usually, the first thing most want to see in this UNESCO-protected town  is a stunning juxtaposition of glimmering blue seas and a historic citadel. One of the most remarkable destinations for its culture that has persevered since the 7th century, Dubrovnik is a wonderful blend of Gothic architecture, Renaissance art, and Baroque churches. No wonder it served as a set of the ultra-successful Game of Thrones saga!

Often called " The Pearl Of The Adriatic ", it offers romantic dining venues where you can enjoy both the cuisine and panoramic view, all within walking distance from a lovely small marina in the old town. After enjoying a walk, immerse yourself in wonderful calamari and mussels in Gradska Kavana Arsenal or go clubbing in Culture Club Revelin, where you can listen to some of the best DJs all while surrounded by massive stone walls built in the 16th century.

Alternatively, you can cast your anchor on Lokrum island just kilometers away from the town to enjoy more privacy and visit the benedictine monastery which was built here in the 13th century. Rest in the pine-shaded beaches and doze off in the sun while listening to the songs of exotic birds exclusive to the uninhabited island of Lokrum . If you find yourself in need of some recreation, try paddle boarding or kayaking in the azure, pristine waters that surround this island.

Yacht charter Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean and is located in scenic southern Dalmatia. A fascinating island world stretches off the coast, which can be discovered on a yacht charter from Dubrovnik. A great advantage of the region is its proximity to Central Europe. The short journey and quite easy sailing conditions make it possible for families to spend exciting days at sea here.

In the high season, the city called "Pearl of the Adriatic" is served by direct flights from various charter companies. Alternatively, you can fly via Zagreb, from where Croatia Airlines flies regularly to Dubrovnik. An alternative is to travel by car, which first leads to Rijeka. From there, the route follows the charming coastal road "Adria-Magistrale" down to southern Dalmatia. If you want to save yourself the approximately 600 kilometer drive, you can board a ferry of the Jadrolinija company in Rijeka. It connects the main coastal cities of Croatia. If you want to rent a boat and reach Dubrovnik, you can enjoy a cheap and comfortable journey.

Dubrovnik - the pearl of the Adriatic Sea

If you plan a yacht charter in Dubrovnik you should spend some time in the city. The well-preserved old town offers a fascinating medieval flair, which invites to a romantic stroll through the alleys. The city wall around the city is almost two kilometers long. It is part of one of the best preserved fortifications in Europe. To the west of the old town, the Lovrjenac Fortress, a landmark of Dubrovnik, is perched on a hill. In the summer, festivals are held here. Another place for festivals is the Stradun promenade.

The old town is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is home to numerous sights. During a yacht charter in Dubrovnik, be sure to allow time for sightseeing. Highlights include the city gates, the Onofrio Fountain and the old city harbor, where the harbor café offers a nice view of the action.

Near the harbor rises the Gothic Rector's Palace, which also shows elements of Baroque and Rococo. Earthquakes destroyed the building several times, but it was always rebuilt. Today it houses the town museum. Imposing is the cathedral, which, along with the church of St. Blasius, is one of the most interesting churches. A cable car goes up to the mountain Srd. From it opens a beautiful view of the city and the possible route yacht charter from Dubrovnik. Other sights are the Dominican and Franciscan monasteries.

The marina in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik has two marinas. ACI Marina is located in a narrow fjord in Komolac, about six kilometers north of the old town. The infrastructure is excellent, including guarded parking. There is a boat refueling station, sanitary facilities, catering and numerous recreational facilities. There are about 380 berths available, the water depth is three to five meters. Regular buses run between the marina and the old town.

Since 2019, there has been another marina in Dubrovnik opposite the mooring for the large passenger ships. Marina Frapa is about half the size of ACI Marina, which is further out. The water depth is between four and ten meters. The advantage of the new facility is its proximity to the old town. Both marinas offer good opportunities to buy provisions for the upcoming cruise.

Segeln Dubrovnik.jpg

Islands around Dubrovnik

Southwest of the Elaphites are other islands to which a yacht charter can lead from Dubrovnik. Mljet is the greenest island in Croatia. A large part forms a national park, which is the oldest marine protected area in the Mediterranean. The 5,300-hectare area is a must-see for those who rent a boat and make Dubrovnik the starting point for a cruise. Mljet and the waters surrounding the island are home to numerous endangered and endemic species. In addition, there are remains of historical settlements, including a Benedictine monastery, which is one of the most beautiful places in the region. On the shore, romantic coves and caves beckon to be discovered by swimming or canoeing.

To the west lies the island of Korčula, which is just under 50 nautical miles from the Dubrovnik marina. Near the island's capital is the seaside resort of Lumbarda, which has one of Croatia's rare sandy beaches. The romantic old town of Korčula has been almost completely preserved since the 15th century and is well worth a visit on a yacht charter from Dubrovnik. Idyllic is the location of the nearby bathing islands, where it is nice to relax. To the west on the south coast lies the village of Smokvica, whose wine cellar Toreta offers excellent wines. To the west is the bay of Vela Luka, from where a hike to the Great Cave (Vela Spila) is worthwhile. It is world famous for its archaeological findings from 20,000 years ago.

Near the island of Korčula is the island of Lastovo, which is almost as wooded as Mljet. But much more interesting are the many caves and grottos that can be discovered here. Carnival is celebrated on the island in October. The most beautiful bay is Skrivena Luka. It is wonderfully sheltered for anchoring and enjoying restaurants and bars.

It is worth renting a boat and making Dubrovnik the starting point for a sailing trip. The enchanting island world offers romantic bays, exciting adventures in sea caves and thrilling shore excursions. In addition, the crystal clear water invites you to snorkel and dive. The best sailing conditions are in summer. However, then the area is quite crowded. Those who can cope with somewhat stronger winds will find more peace and quiet in spring and autumn.

Dubrovnik has a long culture and eventful past. The city Dubrovnik dates back to the year 1272. Dubrovnik was taken long ago in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage. Since the beginning of the 20th century Dubrovnik was developed for tourism it was important that the city was well connected with land, sea and air. The narrow picturesque streets of the Stradun promenade, the massive extremely impressive ramparts and fortifications and the delicate stone cutting testify to long lasting cultural activity of the city Dubrovnik. A summer festival with a lot of theater and music events and folklore activities is organized since 1956 and is evidence of the ongoing vitality of the city Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik is a city in the southern enclave of Croatia at the Adriatic coast. The city is often called the "Pearl of the Adriatic" and "Croatian Athens" because of their cultural significance and the special political position for centuries. In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage.

Dubrovnik is now the administrative center of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County (Croatian Dubrovačko-neretvanska županija) and seat of the Catholic Diocese of Dubrovnik. In 2001 the city had 43.770 inhabitants. The majority of the population are Croats 88.39%. There are also some Serbs and Montenegrins, Bosnians, Albanians, as well as a small Jewish community. Dubrovnik was one of the centers in the history of the development of the Croatian language and literature. Numerous important Croatian poets, artists, scientists, mathematicians and physicists are from this city. Dubrovnik can now be seen as a cultural center of Croatia.

Dubrovnik was for centuries an independent city-state , which had commercial relations with south-eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. Next to the name of the town still exists the motto "Libertas" (Latin for Liberty). Today, this term is, among other things reflected in the motto of the Dubrovnik Music and Drama Week Festival. The people of Dubrovnik (Croatian Dubrovčani) can be found in the words of their poet Ivan Gundulić: "Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro" (English: "For all the money in this world, we will not sell our freedom.")

The Croatian name of the town is derived from the Slavic word dubrava (oak grove), the Latin name Ragusa / Rausa goes back to the name of the small island where the first settlement (Lave, Lausa) was created.

With the reorganization of the Roman Empire and especially the church administrative conditions in the middle of the 6th century the rock was fixed around 550/60 under Justinian I, and basilica was built with larger dimensions (31 mx 18 m) on the site of the present cathedral.

Already during wars with Goths in 533/34 Ragusa played a role in the operations of Belisarius. At the beginning of the 7th century the inhabitants of the destroyed Epidaurums settled in consequence of Slavic invasions (today's Cavtat) on the fortified island.

Middle ages

Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (905-959, reg. 945-959) describes in his De administrando Imperio all people of the Empire, as well as those that border with the empire, and the origin and history of the towns in that area. According to Porphyrogenitus the oldest name of Dubrovnik was Lausion, which derives from the Greek word Lau, meaning as much as steep. Over time, the L transformed into an R, then the name Rausion and later Ragusium was formed. The following versions are also known: Rausium, Racusium, Rausa, Ragusa, Racusa. In the papal bull of Pope Benedict VIII, which was submitted in 1022 to the Archbishop of Dubrovnik, the name Labusedi can be found, which derives from the Latin word labes. From the Greek therefore derive the names Lausion and Rausion, from the Latin the names Labusa and Labusedi.

After the Slavs repelled the population of Epidaurum, they settled in this town. They founded a settlement on the mainland at the foot of the mountain Srd, across the same named island which was covered with a thick oak forest, on which the Roman population had fled. Oak in Slavic means dub and so the name Dubrovnik was formed.

Dubrovnik Ciutat Vella

Dubrovnik stood since its foundation under the protection of Byzantium (some time here resided a Byzantine strategist). At the turn of the 12th at 13th century Dubrovnik was allied with the Bosnian Ban Kulin. Bosnia became an important supplier of raw material of the city (wood and metal). Simultaneously Bosnia was an important trading route to the interior of South Eastern Europe. At the time of the Crusades, the city was temporarily under the rule of Venice (1205-1358). In 1242, the city was under siege of the Mongols and the region was devastated. In 1240 and 1244, the alliance with Bosnia was renewed.

After the peace treaty of Zadar in 1358, Dubrovnik acknowledged the supremacy of the Croatian-Hungarian kings and paid tribute to them until their defeat at Mohács 1526. However, since 1420 delegations traveled regularly to the Ottomans, who in addition to the affirmation of its neutrality brought aannual tributes, recently they paid 12,500 ducats until the Peace of Passarowitz 1718.

After gaining its independence (the Hungarian-Croatian king were only revenue in the form of taxes paid and ships) Dubrovnik started its life as an independent Republic of Ragusa. The Republic managed to maintain its autonomy, and the citizens of the city elected their city council and the senate. Patron of the city became St. Blaise (Dubrovnik: sveti Vlaho; otherwise Croatian: sv Blaž.), a doctor from the time of Diocletian, who according to tradition, saved Dubrovnik from an attack of the Republic of Venice. In 1416, the Republic of Ragusa managed to abolish slavery as the first city-state in Europe, while the slave trade was illegal.

Ottoman era

In the 15th and 16 century Dubrovnik experienced its biggest economic boost from the lucrative trade with the Ottomans in the hinterland and wirh the coastal cities of the Mediterranean.

The merchant fleet of Dubrovnik consisted in the 16th century from 160 ships and was at that time one of the largest in the Mediterranean. The most important protector of the Republic of Dubrovnik was the Kingdom of Spain, the greatest threat to the independence and freedom of Dubrovnik was Venice. With the Treaty of Passarowitz in 1718, Ottomans became the access to the Adriatic between Neum and Klek. Today this part of the coast is part of the State of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The crisis of Mediterranean shipping and especially the catastrophic earthquake of 1667 led to a severe crisis of the Republic, from which the city could not recover properly.

Dubrovnik was the world's first country to recognize the independence of the United States of America in 1776 internationally. In the 18th century in Dubrovnik were over 85 consulates. The coat of arms of the Republic of Dubrovnik is also part of the Croatian flag. In 1806, the French marched into the city under Napoleon Bonaparte and in 1808 Marshal Marmont proclaimed the repeal of the Republic (the name was in use since the 15th century).

Dubrovnik Sehenswürdigkeit

Dubrovnik belonged from 1918 to 1941 to the "first" Yugoslavia. Tourism evolved at first on an exclusive basis. Luxury villas arose as the still existing, orientalizing Sheherezade Villa (Villa Seherezada) of the Estonian-American hotel and casino millionaire William D. Zimdin south of the old town. As part of the restructuring of internal borders, Dubrovnik became in 1939 due to historical reasons, and the majority of Croat population a part of Banovina Croatia (Banovina Hrvatska).

During the Second World War the city was part of the so-called Independent State of Croatia. After 1945 Dubrovnik is part of the Croatian Republicof in the second Yugoslavia. In 1956, in Dubrovnik was a major architectural and historic event: The 10th (and penultimate) from the series of CIAM Meetings (Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne). The city was in the postwar period a major aim of the Adriatic tourism.

In the Croatian war the town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage, was under siege of Serb-Montenegrin forces and was heavily bombarded. According to the Croatian Red Cross a total of 114 civilians were killed. The material damage is almost fixed now and the city is again the most popular holiday destination in the region.

How Much Does It Cost To Hire Yachts In Dubrovnik

Budget is a big thing where it comes to hiring a yacht out of Dubrovnik. It is not the most expensive city in the world to charter a yacht from, thanks to the still quite new yacht charter industry in the country.

A motor cruiser can cost anything from €400 a day for a 10 metre yacht but €40,000 a day will get you a 40 metre superyacht with crew catering to your every need. The prices differ from season to season so expect to pay considerably more in July/August.

A sailing catamaran will cost from €500 a day and up depending on the size and what luxuries you want on such a vessel. A monohull sailboat will cost anything from €120 a day to several hundred Euros a day depending on what you want.

A speedboat hire can cost as little as €50 for a half day.

With the exception of a superyacht (that must be professionally crewed) you can pay extra for a skipper and or crew at rates starting from €150 a day on top of the basic yacht charter.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.
