Please review and follow it whenever you use the DYC boats and participate in DYC Flying Scots events.
Please carefully review the Pleasure Sailing Guidelines in the Handbook. Remember to sign the boat out and back in, use the oldest boat unless you have a seasonal assignment, and BE VERY AWARE OF WEATHER CONDITIONS AND FORECASTS. Just because you can doesn't mean you should go out.

The American Sailing Association is a group of sailors, sailing schools, and charter fleets. Our purpose is to bring organization and professional standards to the sailing industry. The association is dedicated to boating safety through education, to ensure that every sailor learns to sail properly and is able to prove the ability to sail. The heart of the ASA program is a comprehensive set of sailing standards, which are detailed in the ASA Sailing Log Book.
These performance objectives allows sailors to be evaluated on their sailing knowledge and seamanship skills. But more importantly, through certification to these standards, the ASA provides the individual with a way to prove these abilities to rental and charter fleets throughout the country and around the world.

The Detroit Yacht Club, founded in 1868, is the largest and one of the oldest most prestigious private Clubs in North America. The current DYC clubhouse, located on a private island along the banks of the Belle Isle Park in Detroit, is of Mediterranean design and was completed by George Mason in 1922. Mr. Mason also designed the Gem Theater, Masonic Temple and the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.

The Crescent Sailing Association offers sailing lessons on beautiful Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Farms, the heart of the Great Lakes and the premier sailing location in the Detroit, Michigan area.
More than just an introduction to sailing, Adult Learn to Sail (ALtS) provides a direct path to active participation in dinghy and keel boat racing. The curriculum emphasizes small boat safety, seamanship, and sailing skills in addition to the teamwork required for successful cruising and competitive sailing. Our instructors are highly experienced sailors, with decades of sailing and racing experience.
Registration starts February 1st for CSYC members. Registration for nonmembers starts April 1st.
Classes begin mid-June. The course is once per week for eleven weeks, through the end of August. Classes are 6 pm to dusk.
Applicants to the program frequently outnumber available spaces every year. Registration will be by invitation, and CSYC members get first priority for courses.
CSYC offers basic sailing and advanced sailing courses. The cost of the class is $645, or $545 for members.

Refund Policy
$50 non refundable enrollment fee - no exceptions. 90% refund under the following circumstances:
- Sailing the first week and requesting a refund before the next class is scheduled to meet - no questions asked. The refund request must be sent via email to [email protected] , so that we have a record.
Week 2 of sailing and thereafter - no refunds under any circumstances.

Founded shortly after the Civil War, the Detroit Yacht Club (DYC), housed in the beautifully restored 1920s Mediterranean style villa, continues to be one of the largest yacht clubs in the United States.
The 1920s were golden days for the DYC. Gar Wood brought the club world class attention with his world speed records in a hydroplane and his Gold Cup victories. During the Great Depression, membership at the club severely dropped and some services were discontinued.
By 1946 the Club became debt free and the women of the club formed the first women’s sailing organization in the country and raced the Club’s catboats. During the 1950’s the Grill and River Vista were enlarged, movie equipment was installed in the ballroom so that theater quality films could be shown every Sunday evening and a little later, an outdoor Olympic size pool was added along with Front and West Docks to increase the number of boat wells to over 350.
Today the DYC offers a wide range of activities to ensure there is something for everyone.

ADVENTURE SAIL
This class is offered in full day sessions (8:30 am to 4 pm). Students will sail in our fleet of Ultimate 20s with an instructor and other student s as a group. This class is great for kids new to boating who aren't sure they want to race but are ready to have fun and become more comfortable on the water!

Kids have waves of fun at Chicago sailing camp anchored with life lessons

CHICAGO (CBS) — Tying knots and finding the wind are the fundamentals of any sailing lesson, but in Montrose Harbor this week, a summer camp with a different mission.
Every sail on Lake Michigan starts with a checklist that covers preparations and best practices. At Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club this week, Spectrum Sailing is taking place with three days of the fundamentals with 24 kids.
"They call it the autism spectrum for a reason. Every kid is different," said Scott Herman, Executive Director and Founder of Spectrum Sailing.
A former Chicago resident now living in Charleston, South Carolina, Scott Herman started the program when he couldn't find a sailing school that would admit his now 16-year-old son Daniel.
"This group is insanely engaged. I had kids come in yesterday, and they had already read books on sailing. They are already teaching me the parts of the boat and the lessons," Herman said.
They have only the wind to take them out of the harbor. Learning how to navigate these waves -- and throwing in some of their own.
Like the jokes at the beginning of classes, these sessions build confidence and character.
"Give them a chance to come out of their shells a little bit," Herman said.
Lessons they can use as they navigate life.
"Some of these kids are going to be docking the boat by themselves at the end, and some of these kids may not even drive the boat, but the point is they all have an opportunity to come here and have a chance to do something different, and feeling included and feel part of the team."
One of those kids is 11-year-old Owen McAuliffe, who's already learned four knots before he heads outside.
"I've never been sailing before. So this is going to be a first, and I have always wanted to go sailing," McAuliffe said.
Spectrum sailing can be just the start for some of these students. Organizers said some of their kids join more advanced sailing programs.
When these students leave, in an aptly-named sailing boat called "Awesome."
The program taught about 350 students across ten cities free of charge, but dozens more were left on the Chicago waitlist. Herman said the goal is to grow the program and donations so no kids are left on the dock.

DYC has a learn to sail program called the Flying Scots in the summer. You will meet people who will invite you to sail on their boat.
