Superyacht OxyZen is a AB Yachts 140 (42 metres) has a golden colour which dazzles like the motor yacht’s technology. Ever since its debut, the AB Yachts shipyard belonging to FIPA Group that also includes MAIORA, CBI NAVI and INTERMARE – has paved the way of technological innovation and high performance combined with equally cutting-edge outfitting solutions, in terms of both the materials used and the comfort provided. Marco Arnaboldi, the engineer of AB Yachts shipyard and also test driver of all models, says: “Superyacht OxyZen is the first AB 140’ yacht.
Huge elegance
The AB Yachts 140 motor yacht brings together all of the key features of the AB ethos, in the largest yacht we have built so far. But it will soon lose this top position as a 60-metre model is already being designed, following the same conceptual theme, of course”. Arnaboldi goes on to tell us, “Initially I wasn’t sure about the colour, but I now admit I was wrong. When I saw the boat in the water I immediately changed my mind. This summer I could practically track its course around Sardinia and other ports by the phone calls I received from people wanting to know more. It was a real success.
People were also impressed by the external styling, which was a joint effort by AB Yachts and Interin Srl, who also designed all of the motor yacht OxyZen’s interiors. The final result is definitely high-impact. The other three AB 140’ vessels under construction are also eye-catching, and unlike this one they have a fly deck. The interiors of the second of these three were designed by the Guido De Groot studio in the Netherlands, while the yard’s internal department of designers designed the others.
The main difference in the fly version is that there is an open control bridge; so the opening roof consists of just one element instead of the three found on OxyZen; consequently, the ward room partially opens up. The inside layout is basically the same, although various custom arrangements mean that Owner’s can choose whether to have three or four cabins”.
Yacht details
The hull, deck and superstructure of the AB Yachts 140 superyacht are made in laminated sandwich pre-impregnated with vinyl ester epoxy-base resin, strengthened with uni-directional fibres from Kevlar, Carbon and Divinycell sandwich. All of the material is vacuum-consolidated. All of the main tanks for both diesel and water are structural, therefore part of the hull structure. In other words, they add strength rather than being a burden on the structures. Every aspect of this boat has been designed for speed allied to maximum safety and cruising comfort.
“Our aim was to create a 42-metre boat with the same features of the other, smaller AB models. Nothing has been left to chance”, Arnaboldi explains. “The hull is the result of a painstaking hydrodynamic project on the bottom, carried out at the research institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. This is the only centre with a 900-metre tank where 1:5 scale models can be tested. This allowed us to test the bottom’s seaworthiness even with the worst beam waves. The final result is a very stable hull. It doesn’t even need anti-roll stabilizers.
In the same tank we perfected various types of hydrojet motors, which are really AB Yachts’ signature propulsion unit. The results from the tank were confirmed as soon as OxyZen was tested at sea. With three 2400 hp MTU engines coupled with three MJP hydrojets the top speed is 46 knots, while cruising speed is 43 knots. We wanted to match these extraordinary results with the maximum in cruising comfort.
The hull of the AB Yachts 140 has been carefully insulated from the other internal structures, which are made from aeronautical materials and honeycomb structures. This means that the OxyZen can sail at 46 knots with just 72 db of noise in the cabins; this drops to below 50 db when the speed is around 30 knots. We are very pleased with this result, and more importantly, so is the Owner”

Forget cruising, let’s superyacht like the 1 per cent
G ood news for anyone who’s ever wanted to own a private yacht but doesn’t have a spare billion dollars, several high-end cruise companies are rolling out super yacht experiences, writes Michelle Tsea
Earlier this year, Royal Caribbean launched their Icon of the Seas, with a seven-day journey on board the world’s largest ship, 365m long and 250,800 tonnes, where more than 5000 passengers mingle on waterslides and bathe in bubbling hot Jacuzzis while sailing across the Mediterranean. With 20 decks and 20 bars and restaurants, as well as the largest waterpark at sea, the seven swimming pools and nine whirlpools cater to a large range of travellers and equally diverse budgets making the ship crowded and not everyone’s cup of tea.
As the cruising industry continues to grow more and more extravagant, over-the-top liners are built to provide travellers with superlative experiences on the water, on the other side of the spectrum, ultra-luxury ships are also being reimagined to cater to travellers who want more intimate experiences when sailing. For travellers who prefer not to fight for a deck chair when cruising, smaller ships are becoming more popular with the “superyachts-style” cruising where the privacy of a smaller ship is offered to those who want a less “party” scene when on water. The Somnio is one of the latest superyachts setting sail this year and offering 39 spacious private apartments for residents who have the ability to fork out a cool US$11.3 million ($18.3m) to sail the globe.
Despite a double-digit superyacht being quite cheap when compared to purchasing your own liner (prices start at $275 million these days), not many of us can still afford a shared residency on a boat … until now.
Although very few of us have a few million sitting in our bank accounts, cruising enthusiasts who have always dreamt of owning their own private yacht will soon be able to enjoy what the 1 per cent experience. As companies such as Scenic, Seabourne and MSC continue to vie for the attention of travellers, cruising is about to become more luxurious for the everyday traveller with companies mirroring what an experience on a superyacht would feel like with more curated on-board experiences, tailored off-shore excursions to remote destinations and also the “small-ship” feeling with premium services and space for guests to enjoy.
The past few years have seen cruise lines launch a slew of yacht-like experiences. Scenic Group launched Emerald Azzurra and will follow it up with Emerald Sakara due to the immense popularity of its first ship; rival Ponant continues to entice with intimate experiences on their Explorer ships with just 92 all-balcony suites offering a chic Scandi-style of living and SeaDream Yacht Club is unapologetically for yachters with their “it’s yachting, not cruising” experience, boasting access to some of the most exclusive yachting harbours around the world.
The trend for super-yachting and not cruising has sent waves around the cruising industry, so much so, hospitality brands are also stepping in on the action and launching their own super-yacht cum cruising experiences. Well-known hospitality brand, Ritz-Carlton launched their own yacht collection a couple of years ago and rivals, Aman and Four Seasons will roll out their own fleets in the next few years with the same luxury hotel feel but on water.
While many cruising experts have reviewed and enjoyed the intimate and high-design cabins, some do argue that it is just a five-star hotel at sea which begs the question - are these fancy “superyachts” worth the price tag? Ritz Carlton starts at approximately $10,000 a week and Scenic superyachts will set cruisers back close to $16,000 for their yachting experience - perhaps a small price to pay for a week of luxury.
While some serious cruisers will scoff at the overpriced cruising experience and others will continue to marvel at having a more intimate experience at sea without forking out a few million for their own private yacht, it seems that this is more than just a trend but a lifestyle that all of us can now enjoy. If you are curious about what a superyacht cruise feels like, here are the ones to check out.
Launched last summer, Explora I was the first ship by MSC Cruises (yes, the same company that produces the World Europa mega-ship for 7000 passengers) and another five ships will follow by 2028, including Explora II which was launched this year. Alexa Aponte Vago, the founder of Explora says that yachting and five-star elegance like those found in a luxury hotel were pillars when designing the ship, “We always had in mind the atmosphere of a private yacht, creating relaxing experiences that you can only have if you are on your own yacht - floating home,” says Vago. The “experiences” that Vago refers to include “off-the-beaten-path encounters‘, like truffle hunting in Istria, Croatia; enjoying a hammam in a historical palace in Morocco, and sipping wine in Mykonos, Greece. Around the ship, guests can enjoy floor-to-ceiling windows and a private sun terrace in the suites, as well as an expansive wellness centre for high-tech treatments like cryotherapy, as well as 18 dining options, including Michelin-approved menus.

Seabourn Pursuit
Seabourn, a firm favourite for luxury cruising launched the first ultra-luxury ship, Seabourn Venture in 2022 and then followed it up a year later with the ever-so-stylish Pursuit fleet. Promoted as a “sophisticated and luxurious small ship cruise”, only ocean-front suites are on offer here, as well as pool-side neck massages for passengers as they sail swiftly towards the Norwegian Fjords. Guests are treated like VIPs and passengers can expect an open-bar policy serving premium wine, champagne and spirits, restaurants helmed by 3-Michelin star chef Thomas Keller and access to some high-tech toys like six-person submarines, kayaks and zodiacs. If you are looking to get-up-close-and-personal to wildlife, there are remote adventures ashore too, which include: New Guinea, Indonesia and also the Kimberly in Australia as the most popular destinations. On deck, there are craft cocktail master classes and an outdoor Sky Bar for unlimited Happy Hours.

Virgin Voyages
If you are contemplating whether or not a superyacht cruise is for you - perhaps consider Virgin Voyages. The adult-only cruise is inspired by a superyacht design and that’s the only thing that resembles the yachting experience so you will experience all the same great things as if you were on a luxury cruise liner. Perks include mermaid-inspired spas, contemporary public areas and tech-savvy suites equipped with in-cabin tablets and a Sailor App for bookings onboard. For foodies, there are six signature restaurants including Korean barbecue and even Michelin-star dining experiences. Resilient Lady was launched from Greece last year and Brilliant Lady will set sail later this year in 2024 and travel to New York City, Boston and the Dutch Caribbean before finally reaching Alaska.

Silversea Silver Origin
If you are looking for the latest exclusive itinerary by the award-winning Silversea cruise line, you have to book yourself a suite on the 100-guest Silver Origin and explore the Galapagos region in true “yachting” fashion. Some of the perks to look forward to include the highest crew-to-guest ratio, eight zodiacs for extraordinary adventures, including having your very own team of Ecuadorian national experts guiding you to remote parts of the Galapagos islands. Like other ultra-luxury cruise ships, there are only suites available with horizon balconies and butler services too. For the sustainable traveller, this is the most environmentally conscious ship built by Silversea and all organic waste is transported out of the islands to be recycled to protect the Unesco-designated World Heritage Site.
silversea.com/ships/silver-origin.html
Ponant prides itself as being a smaller but elegant cruise ship for discerning cruisers but the explorer ships are definitely more yacht-like than the other fleets they have.
Many guests rave about the innovative Blue Eye Lounge, which feels like a supermarine with two oversized portholes reinforced with 18 layers of glass for passengers to look into the blue sea without goggles or an oxygen tank. There are only two restaurants on each Explora, which can be a little too small for some cruisers, but it definitely gives passengers a taste of what a superyacht would feel like with limited but well-thoughout dining options.
You can also try Le Ponant, a three-masted French sailing ship with only 16 cabins and suites.
au.ponant.com/the-ponant-fleet
Four Seasons
If you need a couple of years to save up for your first superyacht-cruise experience, make it a good one and go for a Four Seasons yacht. Rather than calling it “yacht-like”, the Four Seasons are in fact, building luxurious yachts with the same classy and luxurious amenities and services you can expect to find in one of their 100-strong hotels around the world. With 95 suites per yacht, floor-to-ceiling windows and private terrace, the swimming pool will apparently be one of the largest ever to sail across the ocean. Launching in 2026, it will give many of us some time before we take the plunge and book ourselves this highly exciting yacht that will take travellers to Nevis, Curacao and Martinique. Other perks to help you justify the costs include a whole range of water toys like a sea limousine for excursions.

Woman Had “Out Of Body Experience” and "Literally Snapped" Killing Boyfriend, Prosecutor Says
“She said, ‘I don’t remember what happened, but I know I must have killed him,’” prosecutor Brian Cavanagh said on Snapped to describe Catherine Pileggi’s confession to killing Ronald Vinci.
He was stabbed seven times in the neck. Five times in the chest. He’d been hit with a bat. He’d also been shot on the left side of his head.
How to Watch
Watch Snapped on Oxygen Sundays 6/5c and next day on Peacock . Catch up on the Oxygen App .
“Whoever killed Ronald Vinci wanted to make sure he was not getting up,” said Rafael Olmeda, a journalist at the South Florida Sun Sentinel , on Snapped , airing Sundays at 6/5c on Oxygen.
When police finally got Vinci’s girlfriend, Catherine Pileggi, to talk to them, she shared a story of not rage or jealousy, but of abuse and self-defense.
“It was overkill,” William DeJesus, former Fort Lauderdale police detective, said on Snapped . “And any time we go to a scene that we see the injuries sustained are overkill, then we know it’s personal.”
Personal — because Pileggi claimed it was kill or be killed when it came to the night of June 27, 2011 at the Fort Lauderdale, Florida mansion she shared with her boyfriend. Her lawyers argued she suffered from battered woman syndrome, and Vinci’s murder was years in the making. But did a jury believe the same story?
How did Ronald Vinci die in his Florida mansion?
On June 28, 2011, a man called 911 and said there’d been an accident at his friend Ronald Vinci’s home. He told dispatchers someone fell down the stairs and died.
But when police arrived at the mansion, the body wasn’t at the bottom of the stairs, but rather inside sleeping bags, sheets, and towels.
“His body looked like a big clump of dirty laundry sitting off to the right side of the bed,” DeJesus said. “Once they saw that, they said, ‘Holy cow! We got an issue here.’”
Vinci, 70, lived in the home with his girlfriend, Catherine Pileggi. 16 years his junior, the couple had been together on and off for nearly two decades.

“Cathy was a very good-looking, gorgeous woman,” said Tom Gonzales, Vinci’s friend, on Snapped . “I think that she was somewhat of a trophy girlfriend. You know, ‘My girlfriend’s an airline stewardess and she’s a hottie.’”
Vinci lived a lavish lifestyle, and owned yachts and motorcycles as well as several vehicles.
“He purchased a two-story home in one of Fort Lauderdale’s richest ritziest neighborhoods,” Olmeda said. “That he shared with Catherine.”
But just two weeks after moving into the mansion, Vinci was dead.
Police spoke first to Spencer Gordon — Vinci’s friend — and the man who called 911 to report his death. Gordon said he was alerted to the death by a handyman who worked for Vinci named Reynaldo Silva.
“I was talking with Cathy,” Gordon told police in an interview. “She seemed as normal as ever.”
After finding Vinci’s body in the bedroom, he told police he confronted Pileggi about what happened, and she said he’d fallen down the stairs around 1 a.m.
“I said, ‘What did you do?’ She just stared. Didn’t say anything,’” Gordon told police.
Eventually, Gordon alleged Pileggi told him that she’d shot Vinci after an argument, and asked him not to call police, but he did anyway.
Officers also spoke to Silva to find out what had happened. He told police Pileggi had called him at 1 a.m. using Vinci’s phone, and told him to rent a truck for the next day. When Silva called Vinci’s phone the next morning, Pileggi answered, and told Silva to come to the house.
“He fell from the stairs,” Silva said on Snapped . “Then, she goes and says to me, ‘Ron [has] to be — he [wants to] be buried in the ocean.’”
Silva alleged Pileggi asked him to take Vinci’s body and throw it in the ocean, and took him to see the body in the bedroom. That’s when he said he called Gordon for help.
“I didn’t call the police because I was afraid … afraid of not being understood because I know I have poor English,” Silva said.
The evidence at Vinci’s home was damning for Pileggi. Police discovered Pileggi had purchased a large bin soon before the death, as well as dive weights used to weigh down an object in water.
“It was a red flag because if she was planning to do this ahead of time, this would be an earmark of premeditated murder,” prosecutor Brian Cavanagh said on Snapped .
Police also found several plastic bags in Vinci’s Bentley that contained a handgun, a knife with blood on it, and a hammer. Fingerprints on the gun matched those belonging to Pileggi. There was evidence of Vinci’s blood at the bottom of the staircase that led to the first floor bedroom — and evidence the blood had been cleaned up.
As police talked to family and friends, it became clear the couple often fought, and were even about to end their relationship.
“It was apparent to me that Ron would drink a bit too much, and that I think caused some rift between the two of them,” Gonzales said. “He would just drink. Become very boisterous. He would bump into people, or he would be obnoxious. And I think he was being somewhat too obnoxious to Cathy from time to time.”
On July 5, 2011, Pileggi was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
What defense did Catherine Pileggi claim for killing her boyfriend, Ronald Vinci?
Although she initially refused to speak to police, months later, Pileggi was evaluated by a forensic psychologist, to whom she confessed to killing Vinci in self-defense — after years of domestic abuse.
“She said he had two personalities,” DeJesus said. “Said he’d be as nice as ever and then he could do a flip on you in a heartbeat. Become the meanest person in the world.”
In addition to drinking too much, Pileggi claimed Vinci was taking several different medications that also affected his mood and personality.
Pileggi described to the psychologist what happened after an argument at the top of the stairs on the night of June 27, 2011.
“Now we know this only from her words. He stuck a gun in her face,” Bruce Udolf, Pileggi’s defense attorney, said on Snapped . “He was so drunk and out of it from all the drugs he was taking that he fell backwards and fell down and hit his head at the bottom of the stairs.”
Pileggi claimed she wiped up the blood and pulled him to the bedroom on a rug.
“She sees the gun,” Udolf said. “Sees the clip was half out and the gun had jammed, and realizes, ‘Oh, this time he really meant it. He really was going to kill me.’ And that’s when she takes the gun, and goes into the bedroom, sees him lying there.”
Pileggi further described how she took the gun and shot her lover.
“She says, ‘The next thing I know, I’m standing over Ron, and he’s in bed, dead. And I have a knife in my hand.’ She said, ‘I don’t remember what happened but I know I must have killed him.”
Although there were no police records of domestic violence at the house, a captain of one of Ron’s yachts confirms arguments often turned physical between the two, and that he saw Vinci push Pileggi in anger.
“He said he had witnessed a great deal of physical abuse,” Udolf said. “He’s one of the few people that actually saw it in real time. Ron was also pointing a gun at her … on another occasion.”
The forensic psychologist who evaluated Catherine Pileggi testified at her November 2014 trial she believed Pileggi had developed battered woman syndrome.
“She believed she was in danger,” Dr. Lenore Walker said on Snapped . “That he could no longer control himself. And that he would kill her. And that’s what prompted her to actually take his life.”
A jury found Pileggi guilty of second-degree murder, and she was sentenced to 25 years in prison. She’s set to be released in 2033, at the age of 77.
“She had no criminal history and there was one moment where she snapped,” Cavanagh said. “Literally snapped. And had this out of body experience. No matter how you look at it, it’s a troubling case.”
Watch all-new episodes of Snapped on Sundays at 6/5c on Oxygen and the next day on Peacock .
