Mechanics [ ]

T2CrucifixRange

The tier II crucifix's effective range shown while placing it.

A crucifix can be held in the player's hand, thrown, or placed (default: F on keyboard); the crucifix works in all three situations. Holding F will show the default effective range for the crucifix; this is a translucent sphere with a radius depending on its tier level (even if the ghost has a different effective range):

  • Tier I: 3 metres
  • Tier II: 4 metres
  • Tier III: 5 metres

When the ghost attempts to initiate a hunt within the crucifix's range, the hunt will fail to begin, and a charge will be used. Each time a crucifix successfully prevents a hunt, an EMF Level 2 reading is created, with a 25% chance for this to be EMF Level 5 if it is one of the ghost's evidences .

For the Demon , the crucifix's effective range is increased by 50% for each tier:

  • Tier I: 4.5 metres
  • Tier II: 6 metres
  • Tier III: 7.5 metres

The Tier I crucifix only has one charge, while tier II and tier III both have two charges. Each time it blocks a hunt attempt, a burning effect will appear, and the crucifix will glow visually before fading slightly darker. On first use, one arm of the crucifix will disappear. On second use, more parts of the crucifix will disappear.

If a player-held crucifix successfully prevents a hunt attempt, it will automatically be thrown on the ground.

After the crucifix is completely burnt, the crucifix will be useless and have no further effect on the ghost. In addition, the crucifix will not work if:

  • The ghost is not within the specified range (even if the crucifix is located in the ghost room )
  • A cursed possession is used to initiate a cursed hunt (Except for in the case of an unused tier III crucifix, which can be used to stop a cursed hunt at the cost of both its charges)
  • A hunt has already started/is in progress

Each time a crucifix is used, the ghost must wait a minimum of 25 seconds (20 seconds for a Demon ) before attempting to initiate another hunt.

The crucifix range is not limited by any obstacle such as walls and doors. This includes exterior walls, which means that it is possible for crucifixes to be used outside provided the ghost is within its range inside the investigation area. 42 Edgefield Road is a good example of this, where a ghost near the front of the house, even upstairs, could possibly use up a crucifix still hanging on the van wall.

Photo Rewards [ ]

Taking a photo of a crucifix that has been used once or twice will yield a Burned Crucifix photo, rewarding up to $10 and 10XP depending on the distance the photo was taken from. Up to 4 Burned Crucifix photos can be obtained for two crucifixes.

Additionally, if a crucifix is photographed within 20 seconds of preventing a hunt it will first [ verification needed ] yield an Interaction photo, rewarding up to $5 and 5XP. It can then be photographed again immediately for the Burned Crucifix photo. Therefore, a maximum number of 8 photo rewards can be obtained from two crucifixes.

Although the crucifix works while held in-hand, it is strongly advised to place the crucifix on the ground, as this will free the player to do other objectives or hold onto more useful equipment during the investigation.

  • Because it has no corpus (figure of the crucified Christ), the in-game item is not a true crucifix but rather just a regular cross.

Screen Rant

How to use a crucifix to stop ghosts in phasmophobia.

In Phasmophobia, players are hunted by different ghosts. To prevent them from being able to kill teammates, players can place a Crucifix in the room.

In the new indie horror ghost hunting co-op Phasmophobia , players enter houses, abandoned hospitals, and asylums, and abandoned schools to seek out ghosts haunting the location. Players gain access to several ghost hunting tools like night-vision, a thermometer, and an EMF reader, which they can upgrade using money from successful hunting. They need to use these tools and speak out loud to the ghost to collect Evidence and complete objectives and eventually identify the kind of ghost haunting the location. While not all the ghosts available in the game will try to attack the players, many will, and players can be slowly picked off by vindictive or violent specters.

Related:  Phasmophobia: Complete List of Questions That Will Get An Answer

One of the first tasks players will need to complete when they enter the building is figuring out what room the ghost occupies. To do this, players will often split up, each with a different piece of equipment, and search different rooms until they see evidence of a ghostly presence. To prevent more aggressive ghosts from hunting the team, players can purchase and use a Crucifix. They'll need to be quick, though, because once a ghost has begun a hunting phase , the Crucifix will become useless. If the ghost is out of range of the item, it will also not work to protect players. Here's how to properly use the Crucifix to stop ghosts in Phasmophobia .

Players will not have access to the Crucifix at the start of the game. Instead, they can purchase them for $30 each once they have earned some money from completing tasks and successfully identifying ghosts.

Once the players figure out the Ghost Room , they can prevent the ghost from initiating a hunting phase by placing the Crucifix on the ground of the room. It only has a 3 meter radius for most ghosts, though it does work for 5 meters in any direction on Banshees . It will be useless if the player is simply holding it.

Each Crucifix may only be used two times. After that, it will disappear, and the players will need to purchase a new one. If the ghost was going to initiate a hunt but is in range of the item, they will not be able to do so and will instead return to whatever activities they were previously engaged in.

Crucifixes cannot stop a hunt once it has already begun. Players will know the ghost has begun the hunt if their flashlights begin flickering, the doors lock, and the radios provide only static. At that point, the only recourse for players is to try and hide or evade until the hunt phase ends. If the ghost is out of range of the Crucifix when it tries to initiate the hunt, then the Crucifix will not protect the team.

For larger rooms, players may want to place both Crucifixes strategically to cover the entire area and prevent the ghost from hunting more effectively.

Protect yourself from ghosts with the Phasmophobia crucifix.

how to use Phasmophobia crucifix

Are you trying to figure out how to use the Phasmophobia crucifix? Don't worry, so is everyone else. The crucifix can help you stop a ghost from hunting and killing you, but it can be difficult to tell if it's actually working.

Phasmophobia is still in Early Access, so there are semi-regular updates to how different items work. The crucifix may be a target for changes, but I'll update this guide to reflect those if they happen. Either way, this is what you need to know about how to use the crucifix in Phasmophobia right now.

How to use the Phasmophobia crucifix

  • Buy a crucifix before a job and add it to your equipment list before leaving.
  • Identify the ghost's favorite room and bring the crucifix there.
  • Throw the crucifix near where you believe the ghost will appear.

Using a crucifix sounds easy—you just chuck it on the ground, right? But there is a bit of strategy involved in making sure you're actually using it properly. One of the most important things to remember is that it has an effective radius of three meters (five against a Banshee). When a ghost starts hunting you, it will check to see if it has spawned within the radius of a crucifix. If yes, the hunt is prevented. If not, your flashlight will start flickering, and you'll need to run and hide.

This means that the best place to put a crucifix is in the ghost's favorite room. If it's a small room, you may be able to prevent a hunt just by throwing it right in the center. That said, if the ghost's favorite room is a large one like a garage or a room in a farmhouse or school, you'll have a tougher time getting the coverage you need with that method. If the crucifix doesn't prevent the hunt from starting, you're still in danger. After a hunt begins, the ghost can walk right past a crucifix to reach you without trouble.

There's some debate as to whether or not a Phasmophobia crucifix will work while held in your hand. Players seem to have all sorts of conflicting evidence on this point, so to be safe, just make sure you put it on the ground. You need those hands for your other tools anyway, right?

Crucifix tips

  • It has an effective radius of three meters (five against a banshee).
  • The crucifix has two 'charges': It can only prevent a hunt twice before disappearing.
  • There isn't any indication yet to tell you if crucifix 'charge' has been used.

At present, Kinetic Games is working on a way of showing you if your crucifix has successfully stopped a hunt, so keep an eye out for that change. The number of charges and effective radius of a crucifix have also changed during development and could potentially change again.

The crucifix is a unique protective item in Phasmophobia that can prevent a ghost from initiating a hunt against you (and your teammates). Thankfully, this handy item is super easy to use—and we’re here to cover everything you need to know. Read on to learn exactly how to use a crucifix in Phasmophobia , and how to utilize it most effectively in your future games.

Things You Should Know

  • Place the crucifix on the floor of the ghost room to prevent a ghost from hunting you. The crucifix also works when a player holds it.
  • The crucifix has 1-2 total charges, depending on the Tier level of the item.
  • You need to be at least level 8 to buy a crucifix.

Step 1 Purchase a crucifix for $30 before the game starts.

  • All Tiers of the crucifix cost $30.
  • The crucifix is available in all versions of Phasmophobia , even if you’re playing it on the Oculus Quest 2 .

Step 2 Press E to pick up the crucifix and F to put it down.

  • The crucifix does work if you have it equipped in your hand, but it’s a lot easier (and simpler) to place it on the ground as a means of protection. If the crucifix gets triggered while you’re holding it, it’ll fall on the ground immediately.
  • Press and hold F to preview the crucifix’s range before putting it down. The F key shows an outline of the crucifix’s protective radius. Against most ghosts, a Tier 1 crucifix covers a 3-meter radius, a Tier 2 crucifix covers a 4-meter radius, and a Tier 3 crucifix covers a 5-meter radius. If the ghost is a Demon, the Tier 1, 2, and 3 crucifixes cover a 4.5-, 6-, and 7.5-meter protective radius, respectively.

Step 3 Check the crucifix periodically to see if it was triggered.

  • If only one arm of the crucifix is missing (on a Tier 2 or 3 item), it still has 1 protective charge left.
  • Tip: There’s no need to panic if you notice the crucifix getting triggered. It takes at least 25 seconds for a ghost to initiate a new attack (or 20 seconds, if it’s a Demon).

Step 4 Remove or replace the crucifix when it’s used up.

  • The crucifix only works if it’s put down before a hunt starts. The crucifix is useless if a ghost has already started hunting you.
  • Crucifixes can only protect you against normal ghost-initiated hunts. If you trigger a cursed hunt (by interacting with a cursed possession, like the Haunted Mirror or Tarot Cards ), the crucifix won’t provide any safeguards.

Step 2 Keep your EMF reader handy in case the crucifix stops a hunt.

Phasmophobia: How to Use the Crucifix and How Does It Work?

Learn to put that Crucifix in your shaky hand to good use!

ghost crucifix

Phasmophobia is a new multiplayer horror that can be played in a lobby of up to four of your friends.

If you enjoy being scared, hunting down ghosts and also screaming helplessly at your friends, then this is the game for you.

You and your friends will have to hunt down ghosts using various equipment and discover clues to figure out what kind of spirit you're up against. You'll also be asked to complete various objectives while you go on these ghost hunting contracts too!

There are a few different items that will help you discover them such as Spirit Boxes, Ghost Writing Books, Camera's and EMF Readers - just to name a few. You can use these materials to gather evidence, and ultimately get you money and XP!

Whilst looking for the ghost, your sanity will drop and you'll become an easier target. But no need to fear! You can use items such as the Crucifix to protect yourself, so here's how to use it.

How to Use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia?

The Crucifix can be used in Phasmophobia to stop a ghost from entering the hunting phase.

To do so, you'll have to locate which room the ghost is based in, and then place the Crucifix on the floor. You have to do this before the ghost is angered or in its hunting phase. If you place the Crucifix during or after their tantrum, it will essentially be useless.

Also bear in mind that the item only has a range of three meters. So, larger rooms may need multiple Crucifixes to prevent the ghost from hunting.

You also need to note that the Crucifix does not affect some ghost types... so, it still doesn't mean you're completely safe from being hunted!

Misconceptions When Using the Crucifix

Many players think holding the Crucifix up to the ghost once it's in the hunting phase will stop it. But they are wrong. This does not cancel the hunting phase and if anything, you're going to get taken alive by the ghost for risking it.

Next thing you know, your friends will hear your blood-curdling screams.

How to use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia

Image of Kacee Fay

Most of the equipment players can use to hunt ghosts in Phasmophobia is fairly intuitive and easy to understand, but the Crucifix is an extremely tricky and precise asset that is likely to cause players trouble. The Crucifix is a powerful tool that can save the lives of both you and your friends, but only if you know how to use it properly.

In my experience, this is by far the toughest item to use correctly. Here’s everything players need to know about how the Crucifix functions in Phasmophobia .

  • What does the Crucifix do in Phasmophobia?
  • How do you use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia?

The best way to use the Crucifix

Crucifix updates may come soon to phasmophobia, what does the crucifix do in phasmophobia .

When used correctly, the Crucifix will stop the ghost from initiating a hunt . During a hunt, the ghost becomes visible, locks players inside, and proceeds to chase them down with the goal of killing one of them, so preventing this from taking place is quite powerful.

A Crucifix lying on the ground.

As powerful as the Crucifix can be, players will want to keep in mind it cannot stop a cursed hunt from happening. Cursed hunts occur when players use one of the seven Cursed Possessions in Phasmophobia and will be initiated whether or not a Crucifix is being used properly.

How do you use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia ?

To use a Crucifix in Phasmophobia , you must start by deciding whether you want to hold it in your hand or place it. This item will work slightly differently depending on which method players choose.

  • If you choose to hold the Crucifix , you’ll want to stay close to where you think the ghost is otherwise this item will not successfully prevent a hunt . This is tough to do in single-player mode since you’ll need to cycle through and use other equipment.
  • If you choose to place the Crucifix, you’ll want to ensure you are setting it down near where the ghost is so it will stop it. In my experience with this item, it’s usually best to place it down as this is the most reliable way of ensuring it will work.

Regardless of which method Phasmophobia players choose, the Crucifix must be within three meters of where the ghost is. The one exception to this rule is the Demon, which the Crucifix will stop up to five meters away.

A Crucifix about to be placed in Phasmophobia.

It is quite difficult to judge what this radius looks like on your own, but you can see the exact radius of the Crucifix by holding down the secondary use button, which is F by default . If you’ve changed your settings around, you can check which button to use by opening up the journal and navigating to the controls page.

A translucent circle will appear on the ground while you are holding this button to show you the exact radius the Crucifix is currently covering from where you stand and where its reach will extend if you place it.

The Crucifix can be used twice within a match before it will break . The first time the Crucifix stops the ghost from initiating a hunt, a bright burning effect will appear and one of its wings will break off. The second time, more of the Crucifix will burn away.

Two Crucifixes hanging on a wall.

The best way to protect yourself and your teammates with a Crucifix is to identify the area the ghost is most active in and then place two Crucifixes near that area covering as much of it as you possibly can.

Only two of these items are allowed in any match, so all players can do is try to identify the area the ghost is active in and cover it with the Crucifixes’ radius.

If a hunt has already begun, the Crucifix is useless, so the only way players can use them for protection is to place them down before a hunt has begun. Players who are struggling to nail exactly how this functions may want to consider creating a custom difficulty mode and testing it out over and over since this will make it so they lose less money or no money at all depending on the exact settings they apply.

While holding or placing this item is easy enough to do, using the Crucifix is tricky since it will only protect players from a hunt when it is close enough to the ghost to do so. In my experience, using this item correctly is incredibly difficult and is all about proper timing, exact placement, and being the correct distance away from the ghost.

While all of this is how the Crucifix currently functions, Kinetic Games has also been consistently working on expanding the game as it moves closer to Version 1.0. This process includes overhauling most of the equipment, including the Crucifixes.

If you head over to the equipment wall in the Phasmophobia hub, you’ll find lots of markers that say “coming soon,” teasing what the devs are working to implement.

Next to the current Crucifix players have access to there are two other ones that appear to be of lesser and greater value, so players can expect these to arrive in the future and at least slightly change how the Crucifix functions.

Phasmophobia Crucifix - How to Use

Home » Guides » Phasmophobia Crucifix – How to Use

The question of how to use the crucifix in Phasmophobia is one that players are still fighting over. This is because, out of all the ghost-hunting tools you have at your disposal, the crucifix is the most finicky one. To make things even worse, there are a lot of myths circulating in the fanbase about the cross and how it works. It’s a bit of a mess, unfortunately. That being the case, here’s our Phasmophobia Crucifix – How to Use guide to dispel some of the misconceptions and explain how to use the tool properly.

phasmophobia crucifix how to use

How to Use Crucifix in Phasmophobia

To use the crucifix in Phasmophobia, the first step is to locate the room which the ghost is haunting. Use all the usual tools for that – the spirit box, the thermometer, EMF, whatever works best for you. Once you do that, you need to figure out the approximate spot in which the ghost spawns. This is easy in small rooms, but in large spots like the gymnasium, it gets a little trickier. In those cases, you will have to scatter several crucifixes in strategic places, and then move them around until you get it right. It can get annoying, but oh well.

The effect of the crucifix has a radius of three meters, except in the case of the Banshee, where it’s five meters. You need to place the crucifix on a surface, ideally on the ground, as close to the ghost spawn as possible, before it starts hunting. Once the apparition starts hunting, the crucifix can’t help you. Another thing to know about how to use the Phasmophobia crucifix is that holding it in your hand doesn’t work; at least, not always. Placing it on the ground is the one guaranteed recipe for success.

Each cross can prevent up to two hunts. After it prevents one hunt, it will lose one of its arms. When it stops the second hunt, it will lose the other arm, too, and from that point on, it won’t work anymore. From then on, you can place another crucifix if you have it. If not, well, use the standard fallback of running away and hiding.

How To Use The Crucifix In Phasmophobia

How To Use The Crucifix In Phasmophobia

There are several items in Phasmophobia, including the Crucifix and smudge sticks, that can be used to stop ghosts from hunting you in Phasmophobia. If you're wondering how to use the Crucifix, you certainly wouldn't be the first player to be confused about how this item works; the game doesn't explain how to use it, so you're left to figure it out on your own. It's an extremely handy tool, though, so it's worth learning how to use if you don't yet know how.

In this guide, we'll discuss all you need to know about Crucifixes in Phasmophobia, including what they are and how to use them.

April 17 2023 - We've checked for any changes to the Crucifix in Phasmophobia.

What Is The Crucifix In Phasmophobia?

The Crucifix is an item that can be used to stop ghosts from initiating hunts in Phasmophobia.

A Crucifix can be purchased from the Shop for $30, and players can bring a maximum of 2 along per match. A Crucifix can only be used twice before it is no longer able to be used again, so use this item wisely.

crucifix phasmophobia

How To Use Crucifix In Phasmophobia

A Crucifix will prevent a ghost from hunting you, but it won't stop a hunt in progress. The Crucifix won't just immediately start working once you have it in your inventory, instead, you'll need to take a few extra steps to properly use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia.

First, you'll need to purchase a Crucifix from the store and add it to your loadout before you decide on a map and head out in your van. Once you get to the map itself, look around and identify the ghost room, which is where the ghost will reside and where you'll likely see the most ghost activity.

Once you've located the ghost room, you just need to toss the Crucifix on the ground by pressing the 'F' button. It will work within a three-meter radius, meaning that if you're within that radius, the ghost won't start hunting you. You can use a Crucifix twice before it is unable to be used again.

Dealing with angry spirits can be tricky, especially when they threaten to claw your face off. You might think it’d be handy to have a Crucifix around. Everyone knows how they work – point them at the ghost and it has to go away, right? Wrong. In Phasmophobia, you’re going to need to learn how to use the Crucifix properly. It’s not entirely obvious how it works, so we’ve put this guide together to explain exactly that.

How to use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia

You can purchase a Crucifix for $30 in Phasmophobia, but using them is a different thing. Crucifixes work by stopping the Ghost from initiating a hunt within a certain radius around it. A hunt is the scariest part of the game when the lights start flickering and the ghost tries to kill you or your friends.

The key here is that the Crucifix does not stop the Ghost from hunting. It only stops them starting the hunt when near it. Holding the Crucifix in your hands when the Ghost is hunting will not stop it from killing you.

Read more: All ghost types in Phasmophobia

The most effective way to use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia is to identify the Ghost room, then drop the Crucifix in the center of it. Given this is where the Ghost will be most active, this will stop it from starting a hunt next to you. If the Ghost room is a large space, have multiple players space out crucifixes around the room. Again, if the ghost isn’t inside the range of the Crucifix (i.e. if it’s outside of the room), then it will be able to start a hunt, but hopefully you’ll have more time to hide or escape.

That’s everything you need to know about how to use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia. Once you get the hang of it, it’ll help you and your mates survive far longer when interacting with a vengeful spirit. For more Phasmophobia guides, click here to visit the game’s hub page on our site.

How to use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia

Demons love to munch on these!

ghost crucifix

The Crucifix item in Phasmophobia works as a defense mechanism against Ghost Hunts. Each time the item is used, you will burn off one of the arms to show how many charges it has. Contrary to popular belief, the Crucifix does not block Ghosts while already hunting or work as a repellent. Instead, the Crucifix prevents Hunts within a small radius and requires players to know where the Ghost will spawn to use it effectively. This is how the Crucifix works in Phasmophobia.

How the Crucifix works in Phasmophobia

ghost crucifix

The Crucifix in Phasmophobia is a defensive item that works similarly to how Smudge Sticks prevent the Ghost from initiating a Hunt . The Crucifix has two charges to prevent two Ghost Hunts, and one of the arms will burn when used successfully. They are very useful in keeping players alive and cost $30 each. Players can bring two of them into each Investigation and have an Objective attached to using them to prevent a Ghost Hunt.

When placing a Crucifix down or holding one in hand, it will only prevent a Ghost Hunt if the Ghost attempts to Hunt within a radius of three meters , unless it is a Demon, in which case this is increased to five meters . For it to properly work, players will have to figure out the Ghost Room and then place the Crucifix inside as just leaving it anywhere won't protect anybody. If a Cursed Object is used and a Cursed Hunt is initiated, the Crucifix will not work to prevent it.

Where to place the Crucifix in Phasmophobia

ghost crucifix

Much of the confusion as to where the Crucifix should be placed in Phasmophobia comes from not knowing how to identify the Ghost Room or figure out where it spawns. During Ghost Events when the Ghost appears, the Crucifix can be placed in that location as it is roughly where the Ghost can spawn from during Hunts. Other indicators can be the coldest spot of a room, although a Ghost that moves a lot can make this harder to tell as the cold temperature will linger for a few minutes after the Ghost has left. Generally, if the Ghost has interacted with anything, placing a Crucifix at that last interaction point is the best bet.

How To Use the Crucifix

The Crucifix is a piece of Purchasable Equipment in Phasmophobia. You can use this item to protect yourself and your teammates against a Ghost Hunt.

When placed in a Ghost's room or within 3 meters of the Ghost, the Crucifix will prevent a Ghost entering their physical form and initiating a Hunt. It can also be held by a player to prevent a hunt but the preferred option is to either drop it on the floor or place it on a surface in or with 3 meters of the Ghost's room. However, a Banshee can be warded off by a Crucifix from 5 meters off.

Crucifixes can be used to prevent a hunt twice. Each time it blocks an attack, the Crucifix's appearance will change. After the first attempt, part of it will be broken off. After the second attempt, the Crucifix will be glowing bright red, letting you know that it is no longer able to stave off attacks.

You can carry a maximum of 2 crucifixes per job.

How to use the crucifix in phasmophobia.

How to Use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia

What is the best way to use the Crucifix when playing Phasmophobia ? How does it affect the ghosts you're hunting? Phasmophobia's Crucifix is one of several tools you can take with you while exploring its haunted locations. While others help you communicate with the ghost, this one can potentially be a lifesaver.

That's because knowing how to use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia has the ability to prevent ghosts from hunting players, giving the party more time to figure out what they're dealing with and how to fight it.

How to Use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia

In order for Phasmophobia's Crucifix to work, the ghost needs to be in the Crucifix's area of effect when it intends to start hunting.

Based on our experience, the best strategy for using the Crucifix in Phasmophobia involves placing it on the floor of the room housing the ghost. The Crucifix boasts a range of approximately 3 meters and comes with two charges. Banshees are a little bit different, as they appear to be affected by the Crucifix when in a range of about 5 meters.

If the ghost is within the range of a Crucifix when it attempts to initiate a hunt, it will fail to do so while depleting one of the item's charges. You can take up to two Crucifixes with you on each mission. You will know it's used up both charges once it's glowing red, let it's been put in a blacksmith's furnace.

It's worth keeping in mind that Phasmophobia's Crucifix doesn't seem to affect the enemy after it's already begun hunting. Thus, it's crucial to have it near the ghost before it becomes aggressive.

Phasmophobia: How To Use Crucifix To Prevent Hunting

October 16, 2020 by Ordinary Gaming

Crucifix is an item you can use in Phasmophobia to prevent the ghost from hunting.

You may come across and optional objective that requires you to stop a hunting from happening with a crucifix.

Here’s how you can use a crucifix in Phasmophobia.

Buy a crucifix first

If you’re new to the game, you need to purchase a crucifix from the equipment store for 30 bucks each.

Once you’ve purchased it, remember to add it to your list of equipment before readying up.

How to use a crucifix

Based on experience and also from watching other streams, holding a crucifix on your hand doesn’t seem to work at all.

Many players have died while holding the crucifix when the ghost is hunting.

how to prevent hunting with crucifix

The best or only way to use it is to throw it on the floor.

Before throwing it randomly on the floor, you have to determine where the ghost is lurking first.

Use your thermometer or EMF reader to determine the room or the hallway the ghost is roaming at.

Once you know where it is, throw the crucifix some place where the ghost is likely to walk by, for e.g. the door of a room. Wait behind the crucifix to be safe.

After the ghost starts hunting, the crucifix should stop it in its tracks. However, the crucifix only prevents hunts for a limited time before it disappears.

The Crucifix is one of the purchasable Phasmophobia equipment you can bring with you during investigations. When a ghost starts a ghost hunt, you and your team will be in serious danger. The Crucifix can prevent all that by stopping the ghost from hunting in the first place. In this guide, I’ll teach you all you need to know about the Crucifix in Phasmophobia.

Table of Contents

What Does the Crucifix Do in Phasmophobia?

The Crucifix prevents ghost hunts from happening. It can only be used once or twice per investigation depending on your tier. And it’s considered a consumable, you’ll have to buy a new one after it’s all used up.

How to Get the Crucifix in Phasmophobia

You’ll have to reach Level 8 before you can add a Crucifix to your Loadout. Once you’ve reached Level 8, you can buy this tool from the Equipment Store back in the lobby.

How Much Does the Crucifix Cost in Phasmophobia?

The Crucifix will cost $30 per purchase. It will always remain the same price regardless of what tier you’re using.

Phasmophobia Crucifix Tiers

  • Tier I — Unlocks at Level 8. Just a bundle of sticks tied together to make a makeshift cross. It has a range of 3.5 meters. Can only be used once.
  • Tier II — Unlocks at Level 37. It has a range of 4 meters. Can be used twice.
  • Tier III — Unlocks at Level 90. It has a range of 5 meters. It can also prevent Cursed Hunts. Can be used twice.

Once you reach Level 100, you’ll get the option to Prestige . Doing to will reset your Crucifix tiers back to I.

How to Upgrade the Crucifix in Phasmophobia

The Crucifix can be upgraded by reaching higher levels and paying money at the Equipment Store.

  • Tier II Upgrade — $4,000
  • Tier III Upgrade — $20,000

After upgrading the Crucifix, you can select what tier to bring with you by going to the Equipment Store, your Loadout, and clicking on the Crucifix. You’ll be able to choose what to bring from the tiers you’ve unlocked.

How to Use the Crucifix in Phasmophobia

To use a Crucifix, place it within its effective range of the ghost’s location. When the ghost attempts to manifest to start a ghost hunt, the Crucifix will prevent it from happening.

You can see the effective range of the Crucifix by pressing F on your keyboard. This will display a translucent sphere around you where you’ll get a visual idea of the equipment’s radius. The Crucifix’s range will not be limited to obstacles like doors and walls.

The Crucifix can be used whether it’s in your hand or placed on the ground. You can throw it on a surface by pressing G on your keyboard. This is best placed within the ghost rooms where the ghost usually is.

Once a ghost hunt has already begun, the Crucifix will no longer be able to prevent it. Be very careful to place it in the area where the ghost is likely to manifest.

Upon preventing a ghost hunt, the ghost will not be able to initiate another ghost hunt for 25 seconds. However this cooldown is reduced to 20 seconds for the Demon. You’ll know that a Crucifix has been used as it will exhibit a burned appearance as if it’s melted.

What Ghosts Are Crucifixes Effective Against?

Although the Crucifix can prevent all ghosts from starting a ghost hunt, the Demon is a ghost type that’s particularly vulnerable against it. Against the Demon, the Crucifix’s range is extended.

  • Tier I Against Demon — 4.5 meters
  • Tier II Against Demon — 6 meters
  • Tier III Against Demon — 7.5 meters

Crucifix Tips in Phasmophobia

  • Take Photos of Used Crucifix — There are additional XP and cash rewards for taking photos using the Camera of Crucifixes that have prevented hunts. If you can take a picture within the first 20 seconds of it preventing a ghost hunt, it will also wield a ghost interaction bonus.
  • Best Placed on the Ground — You’re better off placing the Crucifix in a place where you think the ghost is likely to manifest as it will take up a precious inventory slot.

That explains how the Crucifix works in Phasmophobia. For more guides, news and walkthroughs, check out  our main page for Phasmophobia here.

ghost crucifix

There are 24 ghosts for you to investigate in Phasmophobia , each of them with their own combination of evidences and behaviors. It takes a long time to get used to the differences between ghosts. You only need to memorize that information on Nightmare and Insanity modes, but on Professional and below, you can get by using a good guide. We’ve got our own Phasmophobia ghost cheat sheet down below for you to peruse mid-investigation and make your life a bit easier.

Phasmophobia Ghost Cheat Sheet

  • Evidence: EMF 5, Spirit Box, Ghost Writing
  • Sanity Threshold: 50%
  • Hunt Movement Speed: 1.7 meters per second
  • A Spirit won’t hunt for 180 seconds after being smudged with incense, rather than the normal 90 seconds for other ghosts.

Poltergeist

  • Evidence: Ultraviolet, Spirit Box, Ghost Writing
  • Poltergeists are more likely to throw objects and mess with doors than most other ghosts.
  • Poltergeists throw objects with more force than other ghosts.
  • Poltergeists will also throw objects frequently during hunts.
  • Evidence: Ghost Writing, Spirit Box, Ghost Writing
  • Sanity Threshold: 60% (lights off in ghost room), 40% (lights on in ghost room)
  • Mares hate light, so they’re more likely to turn off lights and trigger ghost events where light bulbs burst.
  • Mares prefer to be in dark rooms, so you’ll see flickering lights in lit rooms less often.
  • Mares hate light but can still turn on radios, TVs, and computers just as well as other ghosts.
  • Evidence: Ultraviolet, Ghost Writing, Freezing Temps
  • Sanity Threshold: Any
  • Demons can hunt at any sanity, and they will.
  • Demons are able to hunt only 20 seconds after finishing a hunt, meaning they can do so more frequently than any other ghost.
  • Demons can trigger a hunt a mere 60 seconds after being smudged with incense, with the normal amount of time being 90 seconds.
  • Evidence: DOTS Projector, Spirit Box, Ghost Orbs
  • Sanity Threshold: 50%, 80% (if talking near the ghost)
  • Yokai are made more active by talking in their vicinity and will hunt much sooner.
  • Yokai detect electronics during hunts at a much shorter range than other ghosts, only detecting them at 2.5 meters or less.
  • Evidence: EMF 5, Ultraviolet, Ghost Writing
  • Myling are perceptibly quiet when they hunt, you’ll only be able to hear their footsteps and voice when they are within 12 meters of your location.
  • Myling are more prone to making noise through the Parabolic Microphone.
  • Evidence: EMF 5, DOTS Projector, Ghost Orbs
  • Sanity Threshold: 50%, 65% (if near active electronics)
  • Hunt Movement Speed: 1.7 meters per second, up to 2.5 meters per second
  • Raiju won’t just hunt at a higher sanity threshold when near active electronics, it also moves faster when hunting near them.
  • Raiju can be easily discerned during hunts based on their fluctuating movement speeds, based on the electronics you’ve left on.
  • Electronics flicker at a longer range (15 meters) during a Raiju hunt than normal (10 meters)
  • Evidence: Ghost Writing, Freezing Temperatures, Spirit Box
  • Hunt Movement Speed: 1.7 meters per second, up to 3.7 meters per second
  • Moroi curse whoever gets the ghost to respond on the Spirit Box, effectively doubling their sanity drain for the rest of the investigation.
  • Moroi move faster when the team’s sanity is at lower levels. Its maximum speed when at low sanity and in its line of sight is the fastest of all ghosts and extremely dangerous.
  • Moroi are blinded by being smudged with incense during a hunt for a couple seconds longer than other ghosts.
  • Evidence: EMF 5, DOTS Projector, Spirit Box
  • Wraiths won’t step in salt even if they pass over it.
  • Wraiths will occasionally teleport to players when it’s not hunting, which gives an EMF reading. They’ll then roam back to their room.
  • Wraiths can trigger hunts after teleporting, so their hunts will not necessarily start in or around the ghost room.
  • Evidence: Ultraviolet, DOTS Projector, Ghost Orbs
  • Banshees will choose a new player to single out at the start of an investigation, which it will target during hunts and roam to find otherwise.
  • Banshees will not actively chase any other player during hunts unless their target dies, after which it’ll target someone else. If their target is outside, they will then hunt like normal.
  • Banshees will scream into the Parabolic Microphone rather than make other sounds.
  • Banshees only take their target’s sanity into account rather than the entire team’s. If their target’s sanity is 50% or lower, it can hunt.
  • Evidence: Ghost Writing, Freezing Temperatures, Ghost Orbs
  • Hunt Movement Speed: 1.0 meters per second, up to 3.0 meters per second
  • Revenants speed up to a blistering three meters per second if they know where any players are, but they slow down to a snail’s pace otherwise.
  • Revenants’ speed burst lasts until they reach the last spot they detected a player.
  • Evidence: Freezing Temperatures, DOTS Projector, Ghost Orbs
  • Smudging a Yurei with incense will trap it in the ghost room for one minute.
  • Yurei can fully close doors without triggering a full ghost event, which drains nearby players’ sanity by 15%.
  • Yurei are the only ghosts that can close the door leading outside of the building without triggering a hunt or a full ghost event.
  • Evidence: Freezing Temperatures, Ultraviolet, Ghost Orbs
  • Hunt Movement Speed: 1.4 meters per second, up to 2.7 meters per second (based on room temperature)
  • When hunting, the Hantu’s breath can be seen regardless of room temperature.
  • Hantu move faster during hunts the colder it is, with temps under 0 degrees Celcius (32 Fahrenheit) granting the 2.7 meters per second cap.
  • Hantu have twice the chance of turning off the power breaker than other ghosts and aren’t able to turn it on.
  • Line of sight does not affect Hantu movement speed during hunts.
  • Evidence: Freezing Temperatures, Spirit Box, Ghost Orbs
  • Sanity Threshold: 60%, Any (if blowing out Firelights)
  • Firelight and Lighter flames function like Crucifixes for Onryo, but it’ll hunt regardless of team sanity levels if it blows out three flames. It can do this multiple times in one investigation, and flames blown out during a hunt or to prevent one count toward this tally.
  • Onyro increasingly blow out flames the more players are dead.
  • Onryo can hunt at any sanity level if there are flames present in the investigation area for it them to blow out.
  • Evidence: EMF 5, Ultraviolet, Ghost Orbs
  • Obake have a guaranteed chance to change their model at least once during a hunt.
  • Obake only grant a 75% chance to leave Ultraviolet evidence behind when interacting with doors and lights, rather than the normal 100%. They also have an ability to halve the timers on lingering Ultraviolet evidence.
  • Obake have a small chance to leave a special handprint on doors they interact with, the print having six fingers instead of five.
  • Evidence: Ghost Writing, DOTS Projector, Spirit Box
  • Sanity Threshold: 40%
  • Hunt Movement Speed: 0.4 meters per second, up to 3 meters per second
  • Deogen can give a unique heavy breathing response on the Spirit Box.
  • Deogen can see through walls, and as such, it can’t be hidden from. It will chase the nearest player, occasionally checking during a hunt to see who is closest and changing to target them.
  • Deogen slow down the closer they get to a player.
  • Evidence: DOTS Projector, Ultraviolet, Spirit Box
  • Phantoms can roam to a player and trigger an EMF 2 reaction.
  • Phantoms flicker in and out of visibility more slowly during hunts than other ghosts, making them harder to see and keep track of.
  • Phantoms can’t be photographed. Taking a picture of a Phantom during a ghost event will cause it to disappear, though the event will continue.
  • Phantoms will also disappear when you take a picture of their form in the DOTS Projector.
  • Players within 10 meters and in line of sight during a ghost event will experience increased sanity drain.
  • Evidence: EMF 5, Ultraviolet, Freezing Temperatures
  • Hunt Movement Speed: 1.5 meters per second, up to 2.5 meters per second
  • Jinns can’t turn off the power breaker on their own, though it can still be overloaded by turning on too many lights.
  • Jinns have the ability to drain the sanity of every player in the same room it’s in by a whopping 25%. The ability is only possible when the power breaker is on, and it gives an EMF 2 or EMF 5 reading at the power breaker.
  • The 2.5 meter top speed is only met when a Jinn hunts with the power breaker on, has line of sight on a player, and if it’s a bit away from its target.
  • Evidence: EMF 5, Ghost Writing, Freezing Temperatures
  • Sanity Threshold: 35%
  • Shades can’t manifest or hunt when in the same room as a player. They can move to another room and do either, though.
  • Shades have a higher chance of interacting at lower sanity levels, with barely any chance at all at high ones.
  • Evidence: EMF 5, Freezing Temperatures, DOTs Projector
  • Hunt Movement Speed: 50%
  • Oni are visible for longer between flashes during hunts.
  • Oni are more active the more people there are around, and they are prone to manifesting fairly regularly regardless.
  • Oni drain 20% of a player’s sanity when touching them during a ghost event. Normally this drains 10%.
  • Evidence: EMF 5, Ultraviolet, DOTS Projector
  • Goyro can’t change ghost rooms regardless of difficulty level.
  • Goryo won’t show up on DOTS with a player in the room, and they have to be seen through a video camera.
  • Evidence: EMF 5, Freezing Temperatures, Spirit Box
  • Hunt Movement Speed: 1.5 meters per second, up to 1.8 meters per second
  • The Twins interact at the ghost room and at a ranged location elsewhere on the map.
  • The Twins have a hunt movement speed of 1.8 meters per second when starting a hunt from the ghost room, and 1.5 meters per second when starting from the decoy.
  • The decoy room can’t give Freezing Temps or EMF 5.
  • The Twins interact with their environment one after the other, one at the actual ghost and the other at the decoy’s location.
  • Evidence: Freezing Temperatures, Ultraviolet, Spirit Box (plus fake Ghost Orbs)
  • Sanity Threshold: Varies
  • Hunt Movement Speed: Varies
  • Mimics always provide a fourth fake Ghost Orb evidence.
  • Mimics will change the sort of ghost they’re imitating very often, but not during hunts.
  • Mimics’ sanity thresholds, hunt movement speeds, and abilities will change based on the ghost they’re copying. They can even leave Obake-like handprints.
  • Evidence: Ghost Writing, DOTS Projector, Ghost Orbs
  • Sanity Threshold: 75%
  • Hunt Movement Speed: 1.0 meters per second, up to 2.75 meters per second
  • Thayes grow “older” as an investigation goes on and become less active and hunt more slowly as they age. They age up every minute or two, depending.
  • Thayes do not speed up when they have line of sight on you during hunts.

That’s it for our complete Phasmophobia ghost cheat sheet . Hopefully, this helps you figure out the ghosts faster, it all takes practice and a lot of passive learning. Look for more Phasmophobia guides here on GameSkinny.
