Building Bigger: Q&A With Golden Yachts' Cpt. Paris Dragnis

By Jenna Mehdi

Greek superyacht builder Golden Yachts was thrown into the spotlight earlier this year as it delivered the magnificent 95m vessel O’Pari . Creeping up the ranks of bigger build with 71.8m O’Pari 3 in 2015 and 85m O’Ptasia in 2018, the launch of O’Pari propelled Golden Yachts firmly into the Top 100 largest superyacht builders in the world. Superyachts.com spoke exclusively with Golden Yachts’ Founder Captain Paris Dragnis to learn more about the up-and-coming yard.

After some decades at the helm of Goldenport Holdings, Captain Paris Dragnis announced his retirement as Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2015 to dedicate his efforts entirely to Golden Yachts, the luxury yacht builder he had founded eight years earlier.

The superyacht tycoon, whose unique business model is to build superyachts wholly for the purpose of charter, drew industry commendation as Golden Yachts launched its largest charter yacht to date earlier this year - despite the onset of global lockdown measures.

Q. How was the launch ceremony affected by the Coronavirus?

A. The launch of the yacht was always scheduled to be done by the end of February 2020, which was a success.

Since in Europe at that time, it was the beginning of the coronavirus spread, we avoided any open public ceremony that could put our visitors in danger. We reserve our celebrations, until our foreign guests will be able to join us.

Q. How long did the project take from inception to completion?

A. Once the design concept had been finalised with Studio Vafiadis, a total period of 24 months were needed for the project’s completion.

The whole venture became reality with Golden Yachts’ hard working team from various fields of expertise. Our professionals joined forces so as to complete the full engineering at an early stage, while steel and aluminum works had already started. Long time experience and years of collaboration throughout all production phases have facilitated and reassured the smooth progress and completion of a quality project on time.

  Q. Can you tell us a little about the project inception and what were your requirements as the Owner?

A. Everything starts from the challenging ambition of the Dragnis family to launch in the market a new build yacht upgraded in all aspects and size, every two and a half years. Our experience so far, both in building and chartering, were the motives that let us overcome difficulties.

The specification and design process of M/Y O’Pari had already been established before the completion of our 85 m M/Y O’ptasia.

Rigorous and thorough research has been -and is still ongoing- by the Golden Yachts’ team, in order to keep up with the ever changing Yacht’s market demands in terms of creativity, competition and pioneering in engineering and design.

The yacht is being conceived by the Owners but is destined for the Guests onboard.

M/Y O’Pari is equipped with resort-style onboard amenities and technical innovation, which are geared towards providing her guests/Owners with an exclusive experience.

Q. WIll O’Pari be available for charter?

Yes, O’Pari is available for charter. As soon as the lockdown measurements are being diminished, professional photographers will be able to come onboard and reveal more information and photos of the yacht to the market and press.

Q.  This is the largest yacht you have ever built and a firm entry into the world’s Top 100  largest yachts. Do you have plans to build bigger?

A.  Yes, we surely do! We are still “young” and hoping to continue a rising and successful road amongst the Mega yachts ranks.

Golden Yachts Ltd may be younger than other well-known shipyards established in the market for more than five decades, but it has proven to be evolving continuously, creating expectations for the future.

Every project completed, opens a new door to the next challenge and together with our fleet, we grow in experience and know-how, in terms of engineering, quality and functionality of both interior and exterior spaces.

The absolute necessity for the highest standards in cutting-edge technology, top-class performance and unique design trends are features that define modern superyacht build, and we are certainly no strangers to the challenges faced by players in the industry today.

Yet Golden Yachts has demonstrated an unerring determination in the face of this, coupled with a unique business plan and a constant strive to build bigger and better. If its latest launch is anything to go by, we certainly look forward to seeing what this yard already has planned for the next two years.

By Editorial Team   29 June 2020

The 95m (310') charter yacht O'PARI has been delivered by Golden Yachts and is now ready to host her first  Greece yacht charters  this summer 2020.

A fine example of Greek shipbuilding and design,  O'PARI  has been handed over to her Owners as part of a delivery ceremony at Golden Yachts' facilities in Athens.

In an exclusive video, the brand new superyacht was captured cruising in Poros during her maiden voyage over the weekend.

The 2600 GT yacht hit the water for the first time in March. Her keel was laid in October 2018, demonstrating an impressively speedy turnaround time for Golden Yachts, with their new flagship built and delivered in less than two years. The superyacht is a fitting testament to the shipyard's resilience even during the Coronavirus crisis.

O'PARI marks the fourth-largest superyacht ever built in Greece, and she is now the 66th Largest Yacht in the World.

The superyacht is 100% Greek-made, and has been commissioned for serial yacht owner Paris Dragnis.

Dragnis, a prominent Greek businessman, has owned and commissioned 14 superyachts and all of them were or still are popular luxury charter yachts . All of his yachts have a stellar selection of luxury amenities and a host of celebrity clientele, and Dragnis has been credited with strengthening the nautical tourism sector in Greece through his yachts.

O'PARI was also designed with the charter market in mind from the outset, and her Owner's input and experience will no doubt make her a popular option for superyacht charter vacations around Greece.

She marks a rare opportunity to charter a brand new, large yacht in Greek waters.

Following in the footsteps of other yachts built by Golden Yachts, the superyacht has an incredible range of amenities, including a huge pool, a foredeck helipad, an enormous Owner's deck and a sundeck dip pool.

Accommodation is provided for a total of 12 guests in 14 cabins, and her interior styling is by Studio Vafiadis. The Greek studio has previously worked on other superyachts including 107m motor yacht DREAM , where they created a beautifully relaxed, elegant and luminous on-board atmosphere. Some of their signature design elements include drop-down television screens which spin around, and plush carpets that absorb excess sound and create a wonderfully soft feeling underfoot.

Similar themes are expected on board O'PARI, with champagne and cream tones, discreet lighting panels and marble-clad en suites.

O'PARI undertook her maiden voyage down to Poros and Hydra over the weekend, and has since returned to the mainland.

The motor yacht  is the fourteenth yacht built by Golden Yachts. By length, she is the largest Greek-built vessel to be purpose-built as a charter yacht.

However, 91m charter yacht MOONLIGHT II has a slightly larger overall volume, with a GT of 2,982 in comparison to O'PARI's 2,600 GT.

O'PARI is available to book right now for a summer 2020 yachting vacation in Greece. Her charter price is from €1,000,000 p/week plus expenses.

From the cultural heritage of Mykonos  to the emerald bays of Spetses , these diverse cruising grounds are perfect for exploring on a yachting vacation; check out our guide to Greece yacht charters to learn more.

Greece is also a great destination for a social-distancing vacation, as there are over 6,000 islands to explore and plenty of remote beaches and secluded bays.

Telling the tale of Greece’s largest motor yacht

  • #MarketFocus
  • #ClientCorner

Clocking in at 95 meters, the recently delivered O’Pari is Greece’s largest mega yacht, a feat of design and engineering classed by Bureau Veritas.

Nicholas Brown, Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore’s Head of Communications , talks to John Dragnis, CEO of Golden Yachts about the recently delivered O’Pari motor yacht .

NB: Can you tell us about how you started in the yacht sector?

JD: Over three decades ago, my father, Captain Paris Dragnis, dreamt of building a high-end motor yacht for cruising the Mediterranean. By then, he had already established an impeccable reputation in the maritime industry, and he threw himself into his new project. He managed everything from the design stage to the final touches, until his first yacht, the O’Pari , was built. He did this with Intermarine , a shipbuilding company that worked primarily on naval ships, focusing on safety, quality and engineering. It was these factors, along with the ship’s elegant design that made the O’Pari (which was later renamed JAAN ) a success with Greek and foreign charterers. This inspired my father to start his own yacht building company, Golden Yachts . Since then, we’ve built up a fleet of 14 yachts ranging in size from 40 to 95 meters.

NB: What are the unique features of this most recent yacht, the new O’Pari ?

JD: The new O’Pari is the largest mega yacht ever built in Greece, standing at 95 meters long. We had architects, engineers and other specialists design the vast internal and external lounge areas to provide guests with an elegant, comfortable and luxurious environment. We have made an effort to marry contemporary design, precious materials and handcrafted furniture with state-of-the-art technology, machinery and navigation. Add to that top-of-the-line communication equipment and entertainment systems. We are also really proud to have integrated technologies onboard that limit the ship’s environmental footprint and emissions.

NB: How did Bureau Veritas support you in developing the O’Pari , and how would you characterize your long-standing relationship with us?

JD: We have been working with Bureau Veritas for a long time now, since the shipbuilding industry first began thriving abroad. We built a creative and fruitful partnership that over the past ten years has helped us deliver three of the biggest motor yachts completed in our shipyard: the O’Pari 3 (72m), the O’Ptasia (85m) and the new O’Pari (95m). Both in terms of plan approval and on-site surveys , Bureau Veritas’ effort and support have been extraordinary and indispensable. They played a huge role in our being able to manage and deliver a nearly 100-meter yacht in less than two years. Bureau Veritas has helped us reinforce the unrivaled quality and safety that Golden Yachts is famous for.

NB: How do you see the immediate and longer-term future for yachts – particularly the sustainability challenges that everybody is facing?

JD: The Covid-19 pandemic hit just three months before the final delivery of the O’Pari. We did our best to protect our employees and managed to deliver the yacht on time without sacrificing quality. Ever since, we have had to adjust to new circumstances, updating our production processes to meet changing market demands. In terms of sustainability, requests for super yacht construction have increased in parallel with specifications for greener yachts that respect class, flag and IMO regulations . We’re partnering with another Greek company, EPE , to develop and integrate a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) system into the main and auxiliary exhaust system. This cuts waste gas emission and harmful pollutants, and limits underwater and onboard noise.

NB: What are the next projects for you?

JD: At the moment, we are completing a specially designed, BV-classed, 88-meter project, which will be delivered by spring 2022. Also in the works is the design and development of two more 72-meter ships that will follow the latest environmental standards and regulations. Photo Credit: Golden Yachts

Golden Yachts was established in 1996 and is a trusted specialist in high-end large yacht construction and major refit projects, with its affiliated premises located in Greece. Golden Yachts is able to draw on its experience and knowledge of different sectors within the maritime industry.

The first and the second-generation owners of Golden Yachts are active in the Greek shipping industry and combine their commercial shipping experience and expertise to their successful charter business platform (taking into consideration the insights of owners, charter clients, Captains and crews) resulting to an overall evolving the Golden Yachts brand.

https://www.goldenyachts.gr/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Jeff-Brown-23801-1.jpg

Golden Yachts is proud to have successfully delivered to date, the 56-metre O’Mathilde (refit), the 46- metre My Eden (refit), the 51-metre Jaz by Amels (refit) and the 56-metre O’Natalina by Picchiotti (refit), all forming part of the shipyards first batch of refit projects.

The company invested in its own project and engineering teams, gearing up for refit projects but also working towards bringing new yacht construction in-house. This came to fruition in 2007 with the launch of the first GY 50 series yacht, O’Ptasia (now Vertigo), O’Neiro and O’Rama.

New shipyard facilities followed in 2010, and in 2011 the award-winning semi-displacement 39.5-metre O’Pati emerged. The 2010s marked a change of pace for Golden Yachts which upped its rhythm with the construction of the 71.85-metre O’Pari3, launched in 2015, the 85-metre O’Ptasia (2018) and the 95-metre O’Pari (2020), all of which confirm the company’s push to significantly larger builds. After the delivery of the 88m PROJECT X (2022) new build projects include the 78m yacht O’REA, the 60m O’EVA and the 35m O’NEIRO.

“Therefore, it takes a really special beach club to impress the judges. And on that score, Project X did not disappoint. It is an innovative space that simultaneously showcases a museum-quality tender, serves as a launch pad for watersports, a lobby lounge for the spa, a games area and provides a lounge experience in its own right. The key element of the warm and welcoming space is a circular seating area the designer describes as a “spinning nest”.

Wooden slats rise up from the backrests and integrate with the haloed ceiling to act as an architectural backdrop. But far from being confining or static, the sofas and their backdrop rotate and split into sections to provide various views through opening hull doors or, alternatively, to allow the stunning bar to be the focus”.

PARIS DRAGNIS Founder, Golden Yachts

How your yacht can save the oceans

O’ptasia, golden yachts’ new flagship, is wowing charterers with her quiet comfort and beautiful beach club.

dragnis yacht

Silence is Golden

“She was booked for charter before even leaving the shed, just based off the renderings,” says Paris Dragnis of the new85-metre Golden Yachts flagship O’Ptasia.

Standing on the quay at the yacht’s home marina in Athens, the chairman and founder of Golden Yachts gazes admiringly up at his new yacht. At 2,350GT, she is the largest boat to emerge from the Greek yard. And she sets a new standard among her Golden Yachts siblings for amenities and technical innovations to maximise guest comfort on board. Golden Yachts’ business model is distinct from most yards’. Rather than building a yacht with a client in mind, or even on speculation hoping to lure the right owner, newyachts go directly into the charter market, managed by Golden Yachts’ sister company, the brokerage house Atalanta Golden Yachts. These spend at least a few years chartering before being put up for sale, with Dragnis also taking this time to use the boat himself – as a means to both enjoy his creation and gain insights on improvements for the following iterations. In this sense, Dragnis very much wears the hat of owner during the build process, dreaming up the brief andworking hand-in-hand with Italian designer Giorgio Vafiadis of Studio Vafiadis. Their first Golden Yachts project was 42-metre O’Pari, launched in 1997 by Intermarine but refitted by the nascent Greek yard in 2006. StudioVafiadis masterminded the interior design of the refit. “Yachting wasmyhobby and then it becamemybusiness,” says Dragnis. “And I still love it.” Before venturing into yacht building, his business was cargo ships and tankers. And in a former life, in his early 20s, Dragnis worked on boats himself. His business card still brandishes the title “Captain” and the crewrefer to him as such when he’s on board. These days, though, he is quite content to leave the helm to O’Ptasia’s actual skipper, Nikos Demertzis, whosays that the full-displacement yacht handles exceptionallywell in rough seas. Fromseafarer to shipping magnate to yachtowner, this varied maritime history has helped inform the construction process of Golden Yachts. The shipping background in particular has surely helped the engineering advancements found on O’Ptasia. Guest comfort was paramount to the brief, and as such additional sound dampening was required. “My wish is to build a boat that when it’s running you hear nothing at all,” Dragnis says.

dragnis yacht

The contrasting tastes of Golden Yachts’ Paris Dragnis and designer Giorgio Vafiadis are balanced. The interior has a blend of dark woods paired with a light colour palette that is intended to evoke a sense of calm

The precise goal was to improve noise insulation by 35 per cent compared with O’Ptasia’s”. predecessor, O’Pari 3. “I like the quietness of the upper saloon,” says Vafiadis, to this point. Vafiadis, along with his son Stefano, styled O’Ptasia’s interior and exterior as well as configuring the layout. He has penned 11 out of Golden Yachts’ 13-strong fleet, creating a familial inheritance of flowing looks, soft lines and a style that endures. Balance, fluidity and light are all Vafiadis keywords. “Looking at the profile, you can recognise a certain fluidity, like watermoving in slowmotion and then shaping well-balanced volumes,” he says. “It’s a continuation of a style in the Golden Yachts family. When you make a successful design for a brand, it’s normal to maintain such design concepts. We designed all of the Golden Yachts new builds having that same idea in mind.” In order to create an elegant exterior on a larger scale with O’Ptasia, Vafiadis played with the contrast between volumes and recesses, “by pulling the volumes out in opposition to the recesses absorbed by the dark”. The tastes of Dragnis and Vafiadis are balanced inside. “I like light colours and Giorgio likes dark woods, so it’s always a matter of finding a compromise,” Dragnis says. Fittingly, the interior has a blend of dark woods paired with a light colour palette that is intended to evoke a sense of calm. There is a range of woods, from a porous lati to glossy ebony. “The inspiration for the interior was quiet, calm and relaxing,” says  Vafiadis. “We kept the surfaces clean, and there isn’t a lot of clutter or accessories.” The interior decor is modern, with clean, crisp lines and eye-catching details. Ebony cabinetry is inlaid with stainless-steel details. A rippled line in the cabinets breaks up the expanse of joinery in the saloon, drawing the eyes up and out to views beyond the picture-box windows. The main saloon is a grand space, one large open-plan room with two separate seating areas containing white leather sofas, black coffee tables and glass lamps. A dining area is set at the forward end of the saloon, and the ebony dining table is centred with backlit, honey-toned onyx. Air-conditioning units, supplied by Dometic, are hidden in columns, and they are whisper quiet, with air dispersed through the shelved ceilings. This not only hides the potential eyesore of vents but also creates dramatic height, especially in the main saloon – and the next yacht in build is slated to have ceilings that are 20 centimetres higher still. The upper deck saloon is a more casual place for lounging or watching films, with low-slung grey sofas, a bar and games table. The guest cabins feature eucalyptus walls and grey joinery.

Her elemental interiors include an earthy main saloon upholstered in real palm leaf and an airy master cabin with mother-of-pearl inlays, soft fabrics and hazy Tai Ping carpets.

Sparta is currently for sale with Arcon Yachts.

Bad Company Support

Length: 53.3m Builder: Damen Yachting

Bad Company Support is the first unit in the Dutch shipyard’s new YS53 support vessel series, built for legendary sportfisherman Anthony Hsieh. As Hsieh’s largest yacht, she will be joining his expansive fleet offering game fishing expeditions and supporting marine conservation projects in some of the planet’s most unchartered waters. All of her design and naval architecture were completed entirely in-house by Damen Yachting.

Bad Company Support is expected to be delivered later this month.

Highland Fling XVIII

Length: 24.7m Builder: Gunboat

Gunboat's flagship catamaran is expected to be one of the fastest in its size bracket, capable of exceeding true wind speed at just six knots. Highland Fling XVIII’s striking scarlet exterior is owed to French studio VPLP with interiors by Chedal Anglay Design – who plotted them with the help of virtual reality. She is currently undergoing sea trials in La Grande Motte, France, joined by her racing team who plan to put her performance to the test.

Highland Fling XVIII is expected to be delivered in August 2023, with her racing debut scheduled for the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo.

Length: 77.7m Builder: Golden Yachts

With a contemporary-style plumb bow and trapezium-shaped windows, O’Rea carves a more modern profile when compared to her predecessors O’Pari and O’Ptasia . Her distinctive exterior is courtesy of Stefano Vafiadis , with interior styling also handled by Vafiadis in collaboration with Italian studio Massari Design . More than 250 finishes are claimed to have been used throughout, including polished marble and precious stones. The yacht will be also home to a collection of contemporary artworks, curated by Vasilis Dragnis in collaboration with Anna Chatzinassiou.

O'Rea is expected to be delivered later this month and will make her global debut at the Monaco Yacht Show later this year.

Length: 35m Builder: Vanquish Yachts

Originally commissioned in 2020, this anticipated build launched in May and will be the largest member of the Vanquish fleet upon her delivery to the Hamptons. Manu is one of the fastest aluminium yachts on the water, delivering a top speed of over 40 knots thanks to a combination of three MTU Rolls Royce engines. Befitting her eye-watering speeds is a sporty, streamlined exterior designed by Guido de Groot .

Manu is expected to be delivered this month.

Danzante Bay

Length: 50m Builder: Crescent Custom Yachts

Danzante Bay is the largest superyacht to be built in Canada and marks the first new launch by Crescent Custom Yachts since Crescent Lady in February 2020. Commissioned by an American owner, she was named after his Mexican resort and golf course. The yacht is built from a composite hull bought from Christensen Yachts with exterior design owed to Gregory C. Marshall and interiors by British studio H2 Yacht Design .

Danzante Bay is expected to be delivered in August 2023.

Length: 59.4m Builder: Rossinavi

Akula is Italian shipyard Rossinavi’s first-ever explorer yacht. Ice-classified, her stand-out scarlet hull and white aluminium superstructure is designed by Gian Paolo Nari . Interior design is by Ancona-based FM Architettura , with the yacht’s layout optimised to support marine research and philanthropic projects. In particular, she can store various diving equipment and two six-metre containers that can act as transportable science labs.

Akula is expected to be delivered in September 2023.

Length: 33.5m Builder: Baltic Yachts

Named after an ancient Caribbean deity, this sloop-rigged sailing yacht was commissioned by a highly experienced family with around-the-world cruising in mind. Zemi was designed by Malcolm McKeon and features his trademark wrap-over teak decking, as well as multiple headsail options for various weather conditions. Interiors were completed by Andreas Martin-Löf in his yachting debut and feature warm walnut and limestone veneers bonded to lightweight honeycomb structures.

Zemi is expected to be delivered this month.

Length: 50m Builder: Columbus Yachts

With exteriors and interiors created by Marco Casali of Too-Design, Anjelif ’s brass colouring is far from her only stand-out feature. She also boasts several technical innovations, such as a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system and onboard sanitisation that incorporates cold plasma for the elimination of airborne viruses and bacteria. An impressive recreational highlight is the touch-and-go helipad on the bow, which can convert to an open-air cinema when not in use.

Anjelif is expected to be delivered in August 2023 and will debut at this year's Monaco Yacht Show .

Riva 82 Diva

Length: 25m Builder: Riva Yachts

This unit is the debut of Riva’s brand new flybridge series, which aims to “open a new chapter” for the Sarnico-based builder with its “revolutionary approach to the use of space”. Designed by Officina Italiana Design in conjunction with Ferretti Group , the Riva 82 Diva features one of the largest flybridges in its category at 40 square metres. Two large bulwarks fold out to create overwater terraces, expanding the yacht’s six-metre beam by an additional three metres.

The Riva 82 Diva is expected to be delivered in September 2023 and will attend the Cannes Yachting Festival that same month.
