Ghosts UK on CBS: next episode, cast, plot, trailer and everything we know

Ghosts UK is on CBS and it's just as crazily fun as the US version...

Ghosts UK cast standing in the garden of Button House.

Ghosts UK has arrived on CBS as part of its revamped primetime schedule.

The American version of Ghosts  was one of the top four comedies on US TV during the 2022-2023 season and fans are eagerly awaiting the third season .

But due to strikes it's been delayed and while fans wait, CBS is showing the British version. And don't worry it's just as funny!

Here's everything you need to know about Ghosts UK, including how it differs from the US version and the new CBS trailer… we also have a quick guide to the language in Ghosts UK, like the British meaning of Fanny! , as some of it might not make sense to US audiences!

On Thursday 14 December, CBS will air the first-ever Ghosts UK Christmas special. We get more of an insight into Julian's life in the moving special...

Ghosts UK on CBS release date

Ghosts UK began on November 16 at 9.00 pm ET/PT. The first two episodes were shown back to back. CBS is showing the first Ghosts Christmas special on Thursday, December 14 at 9.30 pm ET/PT.

Ghosts UK plot

Instead of following Samantha and Jay like we do in the US version, in the British original we follow Alison and Mike, a young couple struggling with money. They think their prayers have been answered when a distant relative leaves them a huge mansion, Button House. But the only problem is the house is haunted and when Alison has a brush with death she discovers she can talk to the ghosts!

Who are the ghosts in Ghosts UK and who plays them?

Thomas Thorne (played by Mathew Baynton) — Thomas is a 19th-century English romantic poet who falls in love with Alison. Mathew Baynton actually guest-starred in the US version as a different character.

Julian (Simon Farnaby) — Julian is a sleazy politician from the 1990s who's similar to stockbroker Trevor in the US version.

Pat (Jim Howick) — Pat is just like Pete in the US version, a scoutmaster who was tragically shot through the neck with an arrow by a scout.

Robin (Larry Rickard) — Robin is a surprisingly thoughtful caveman!

Kitty (Lolly Adefope) — A Georgian lady from the 18th century, who just wants to be Alison's friend.

The Captain (Ben Willbond) — A World War Two army officer.

Fanny (Martha Howe-Douglas) — Former owner of Button House, where the show is set. She's also known as Lady Button and is like Hetty in the US version.

Humphrey (Laurence Rickard) — A 16th-century English nobleman who sadly lost his head!

Mary (Katy Wix) — A peasant woman from the 16th century who was burnt for being a witch.

Ghosts cast

As well as the above stars, former Call the Midwife actress Charlotte Ritchie stars as Alison Cooper. With Kiell Smith-Bynoe as her husband Mike.

Charlotte previously told us how much the hugely warm response to the first series surprised her, saying: "Yes, someone texted me saying she'd had a horrible day and that Ghosts had improved her mood. That's the best thing ever. It is just a very warm show that people seem to respond to from different demographics and age groups. I feel so lucky to be in a show with this much joy in it."

Who created Ghosts UK?

Ghosts UK was created by Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond, who also all star in the series. They had previously worked together on Horrible Histories .

Speaking about how the show came about, Mathew said: "Initially we just wanted to do something together. We knew Horrible Histories was finishing and it was before series three of Yonderland , which we suspected would feel like enough. We wanted to come up with another thing to do together so we hired out a room in town and threw some ideas around. I think the Haunted House thing was one of the first…"

Is there a trailer?

Yes, CBS has released a special trailer for Ghosts UK . "The Ghosts that started it all are coming to CBS... Ghosts US and Ghosts UK , The Spectral Relationship!."

We have also included the original BBC trailer for Ghosts UK ...

Chipping Sodbury: New lagoon unable to save rail track from flood

  • Published 2 days ago

Chipping Sodbury

A major railway route has been closed after a purpose-built flood lagoon was unable to protect the tracks.

The line between Bristol Parkway and Swindon has been closed at Chipping Sodbury due to flooding.

It was closed on Monday following heavy rainfall, Network Rail said.

The lagoon was installed in 2018 as part of a flood alleviation scheme designed to improve the resilience of the railway line, which had been prone to flooding.

Network Rail said it does not want to let the water out of the lagoon as they are concerned it could flood nearby properties.

Julie Gregory from Network Rail said the "prolonged and relentless period of rainfall" meant they could not safely empty it to reduce water on the tracks.

"In 2018 we invested £5m in a railway resilience scheme where we installed a large lagoon which has a capacity of 11 million litres," she said.

Julie Gregory

"It holds the water, reduces the amount of time the line is closed and in some cases prevents it closing altogether.

"With climate change we know that this sort of event is going to happen more frequently, so one of the a number of different potential options that we're looking at is a bigger lagoon.

"We're working with the Environment Agency and others to look at what our options are to protect the resilience of this railway line into the future."

Trains scheduled to travel through the area have been diverted.

The train service provider warned passengers to check before they travel as journey times may take a little longer than usual.

girls in house looking at ghost

Ghosts are suddenly in vogue. Perhaps we believe in them more than we care to admit

Given the state of the world, it’s no surprise so many of us are turning to spooky stories as a form of escape

E verybody seems to be talking about ghosts right now. I turn up to dinners with friends, we’re talking about ghosts. I sit in the office, the conversation is dominated by ghosts again. I’m scrolling through Facebook groups and reading ghost stories that I then try to tell my boyfriend about (he ignores me). It feels as if ghosts are suddenly having a moment, a strange little resurgence into the mainstream. I think ghosts may be in vogue.

As for how and why ghosts have started to creep into polite conversation, there is a clear culprit. A few months ago the Amazon-owned podcast network Wondery published Ghost Story, a seven-part series hosted by the journalist Tristan Redman. Ghost Story focuses on a murder that occurred two generations ago in Redman’s wife’s family and, by absolute coincidence, took place in the house next door to where Redman grew up.

Redman details unnerving and inexplicable experiences that he had in his childhood bedroom and explains that his investigation into his wife’s family story was launched by news that two families who had lived successively in the house after his own family moved out had also experienced similar – seemingly paranormal – activity.

Despite clearly knowing better than to prod into the details of a little-discussed murder among his in-laws, Redman gives in to journalistic curiosity and delves into the history of the Dancy family (it’s worth mentioning here that the British actor Hugh Dancy is Redman’s brother-in-law).

Ghost Story is a wildly compelling podcast that has received glowing reviews and in the weeks after its release it spread like the pox through my friends’ Instagram stories. It’s not just that the podcast centres on a ghost story – it’s that it’s a ghost story told by somebody who keeps rushing to reassure us that, as a journalist, as a rational, clear-thinking person, he really does not believe in ghosts. But in this case the evidence is too fascinating to ignore.

“Look, I know how this sounds but I think this all might be more than just a bizarre coincidence,” Redman says in the trailer.

It’s in this delicate negotiation between the sensible, scientific world and the unfounded, supernatural world that I believe Ghost Story found its success. While a surprisingly high number of Australians believe (or are open to the possibility) that ghosts truly do exist (48%, according to one 2021 survey), lots of us still seem to rely quite heavily on the beginning of somebody’s story for permission to indulge these outlandish accounts – the part where a person says “I don’t believe in ghosts but … ”

What Ghost Story has uncovered is that, for so many of us, stories of the paranormal can be a strange, exciting and decadent activity, like buying oysters to eat in your own house.

Even if the higher-order thinking parts of our brains quickly remind us that it’s all basically nonsense, ghost stories seem to set the childish, reptilian parts of our brains alight. When one of my best friends agrees to tell the story, in full, of the time that a set of ghostly legs appeared to walk her family dog past her bedroom door, everybody at the table, no matter how cynical, visibly squirms.

After I recommended the Ghost Story podcast to one of the smartest people I’ve met, he messaged soon after to say that he had devoured the whole thing but his partner was away and it had made him terrified to sleep at night.

And look, maybe it’s unsurprising that this year, of all years, people are turning to the paranormal. Interest in the supernatural appears to spike in times of existential crises and a cost-of-living crisis accompanied by a climate crisis as well as the world witnessing a devastating humanitarian crisis feels like a lot to bear.

Stress can increase our awareness of the little bumps and quirks of life that we may have previously walked past without a second thought. And of course it is entirely possible that talking about ghosts with friends primes us to pay attention to the dark corners of our apartments that previously felt perfectly comfortable and didn’t have to contain malevolent spirits or anything. This could be a rather self-perpetuating cycle.

But it’s also fair to say that telling ghost stories can be a simple comfort and form of escapism that we shouldn’t completely denounce. After all, many of us grew up in cultures where ghosts were part of the spiritual landscape and, in the vast universe of bizarre things to believe in, ghosts have to be among the most benign and least politically bothersome. They don’t lend themselves particularly well to the construction of conspiracy theories, they don’t have any troubling racist undertones and they’re not going to lead people to attempt an insurrection at the Capitol Building any time soon.

We should always remain vigilant about the emergence of pseudoscience and perhaps Carl Sagan would argue that even humouring ghost stories is a slippery slope towards a total collapse of scientific knowledge. But I think we can all agree that people can be much more discerning than that and, in the troubling year of 2023, maybe we all deserve a few ghost stories, as a treat.

Ghost Theory

  • View history

Ghost Theory is a ghost hunting horror adventure game created and developed by Dreadlocks LTD. It was Kickstarter funded in May 2016 and is expected to release in 2017.

Ghost Theory is a single-player ghost-hunting adventure for PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, focusing its gameplay on stealth and exploration.

Intrigued by your supernatural talent of clairvoyance, a struggling university department asks you to join their secret research team, making you a front-field operative in paranormal investigations. Using a wide range of ghost hunting gadgets and abilities you will conduct missions to investigate real haunted sites, collect samples and gather evidence.

Each mission is an open-ended haunted ground - a playable sandbox with its own story waiting to be unearthed. The university is your home base, where your work will be evaluated, your results assessed and where you will be briefed for your next mission.

“Be patient. Explore. Observe.” These are the words of Professor Frost, your mentor and head of the department. “A successful investigation always begins with a controlled exploration of the field.” You will use your gadgets. You will use your talents. By carefully exploring, you will turn up clues and these clues will point you towards triggers that can draw the ghosts out into the material world. But you need to be careful. Triggers can be emotional - triggers can cause pain or anger; anger directed at you…

During your missions, you'll be using your ambidexterity to the full: your left hand will operate most of your gadgets and your right will interact with objects around you - turning a doorknob, pushing the door gently ajar, unearthing remains...

  • Voice Log Recorder - serves to record and replay comments about objects and situations within a mission.
  • UV Lamp - reveals what even your eyes cannot see: most importantly, valuable samples of ectoplasm.

Full Spectrum Camera - an essential tool for obtaining hard evidence of paranormal activity. Know where to aim it; know when to shoot; and know when not to get too close.

  • EMF (ElectroMagnetic Field) Meter - by zeroing in on energy spikes, you can detect and track paranormal activity and lead yourself towards items and locations that are important to the ghost you are hunting.
  • EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) Recorder - captures the voices of ghosts. Recordings are valuable evidence for your investigation and will often reveal even more valuable clues.
  • Pendulum - used for divination. First it needs to be charged by an object (e.g. a single earring you found); it can then be used to find an associated object (the missing earring).

As the story unfurls and your research progresses, special engineers will furnish you with new types of gadgets and upgraded versions of equipment you already have. Examples include hands-free versions so you can equip multiple instruments at any one time.

Sudden drops in temperature indicate the close proximity of a supernatural presence. A good paranormal investigator will always keep an eye out for the telltale sign: condensation of your breath. When the terror gets too intense, you can press a button to close your eyes for as long as you need. Sometimes, when you close your eyes as you touch an object, the visions come. Experts call your special para-ability "Clairvoyance" - you call it a burden. It allows you to experience flashbacks associated with an object's history, which may feed you important information about a ghost’s past or reveal further clues connected to your investigation.

Every Main Character In Ghosts (UK), Ranked By Likability

The key to the BBC's Ghosts is that none of its characters are simple. Even a greedy politician can be a father, and the happiest ghosts suffered.

The BBC's Ghosts introduces very few side characters, as most of its events are set in Button House. This is primarily because the ghosts aren't free to leave the house, so the show has to revolve around what happens during their time trapped in their home.

RELATED: Every Main Character In Ghosts (UK), Ranked By Intelligence With eleven characters to focus on, the writers are determined to show that not everyone is who they seem to be. Julian isn't just a greedy politician, he's a father, and Fanny isn't just a strict Lady, but also a sympathetic woman who suffered in her time. There is more to these characters than meets the eye, giving them many facets for viewers to love and hate.

11 Mike Is Practically A Background Character

Without any ability to see and interact with the Ghosts , Mike has become little more than a background character. Despite that, the writers didn't leave him behind, and they gave him the role of a loving, supportive husband, who is somewhat misguided in his own small adventures.

Mike's most likeable trait is his relatable desire to be a part of something more in life, and he demonstrates this through his attempts to see and communicate with the ghosts, even going so far as to try voodoo rituals to earn that ability. Although Mike is far from being a main character, he has still earned a place in the viewers' hearts.

10 Humphrey Is Often Left Behind

Humphrey is the loyal head of the house, if only because his body is usually elsewhere. As an observer of the events in Button House, Humphrey can be surprisingly insightful. Although he was initially the butt of the joke, often left behind by the other characters, Humphrey's backstory revealed a well-meaning character who, despite being somewhat ignorant, only wished to connect with his wife in an arranged marriage.

After discovering that his wife was a traitor to their country, Humphrey was surprisingly brave and died so that she could live. However, since he is often left behind by the others, Humphrey tends to fade into the background, never managing to steal the show.

9 Nobody Knows Anything About Mary

Mary is often used as the show's comic relief, with her odd manner of speech and superstitions providing the audience with much-needed laughter. While Mary is generally loved by the audience for herzany antics, nobody knows anything about her.

Some viewers suspect Mary was burned at the stake for witchcraft but this hasn't been confirmed, and the writers continue to keep her past a mystery, likely waiting for the opportune moment to depict a tale of sadness and woe like they have for other characters. Until the viewers know more about Mary, she will likely only be remembered as the funny girl.

8 Fanny Is Surprisingly Sympathetic

When Fanny was first introduced, she appeared to be nothing more than a tightly-wound snob, caring only for antiquated rules and refined breeding. However, while Fanny can be difficult, it's also abundantly clear that she lived a hard life. Despite her superior intellect, Fanny suffered a loveless, arranged marriage that ensured she would never get to work like she always wanted to.

RELATED: 10 Sitcoms For Those Who Don't Like Sitcoms Scorned by her family and murdered by her husband, Fanny could have turned out bitter. Instead, she's surprisingly sympathetic in the aspects of life that really matter. When she found out that Alison and Mike are destitute, she offered them her hidden family heirloom, and after discovering that Nicholas was had no place to stay, Fanny was the first to suggest that Alison was right in offering him assistance. While Fanny is still somewhat haughty and pretentious, the viewers know that is mostly a facade that hides a heart of gold.

7 Pat Is The Real Leader

While both Fanny and the Captain presume themselves to be the leaders of their ghostly troupe, the real leader is Pat, who uses his skills as a Boy Scout leader to direct the ghosts through their daily routine. Pat is a friend to everyone he meets, finding ways to entertain them, listen to their issues, and even distract his friends on days when they are feeling particularly distressed.

Despite being the humble, empathetic leader of the group, Pat's actor Jim Howick is a master of comedy and between his mannerisms and flawless timing, it's impossible not to love Pat.

6 Julian Is Surprisingly Likable

When the viewers were first presented with Julian, it was obvious that he was never meant to be a likable character. He's a perverted politician who exploited the poor for money when he was alive and often says the most inappropriate things to his fellows. Yet, for all of his bad qualities, Julian is surprisingly likable.

RELATED: 11 Sitcom Characters No One Believed In With a secret heart of gold, Julian often does his best for his friends, though he tends to hide his love for them behind a wall of mockery. Nobody expected to ever feel sorry for Julian, yet when presented with his backstory, and his regrets surrounding his only child, the viewers grew to love Julian. Although he was initially presented as a controversial character, masterful writing made Julian lovable.

5 The Captain Earned Our Sympathy

The Captain is a character whose history is shrouded in mystery, and the viewers are desperate to know more about him. Initially, the Captain was presented as the straight-laced character who loves giving orders, and while that is still very much the case, there is more hidden beneath the surface of this character.

Subtle jokes have made the Captain's homosexuality obvious, but he was never able to admit this fact during his life. Once in love with his second-in-command, Lieutenant Havers, the Captain earned the adoration of his viewers, and is a minor icon in the LGBTQ+ community.

4 Robin Was A Hero To Alison

Robin has always been the most mischievous of the Ghosts, causing mayhem for his own enjoyment. He is intelligent, pragmatic, courageous, and sympathetic. While Robin was always well-liked by his viewers, his shining moment was during the robbery of Button house where he did everything in his power to get help and protect his home and his family.

After making sure the burglars didn't escape, Robin graciously accepted Alison's thanks, creating a bond with her that would last forever, and warming the viewers' hearts in the process.

3 Alison Is The Most Relatable Character

Viewers cannot help but like Alison as she interacts with the ghosts realistic and relatable manner. When she first met the ghosts, everything was a matter of avoidance or negotiation.

However, as she got to know them, Alison integrated herself into their group, becoming more like family than an intruder in their home. By enriching the ghosts' afterlives with books, music, and entertainment, and listening to their stories and comforting them, Alison is living the adventure that many viewers might wish for.

2 Thomas Had A Tragic Backstory

As the privileged poet who acts like he had a tough life, playing on the fact that he must still suffer in his afterlife because of his unrequited love for Alison, Thomas became a great source of comedic entertainment. While comedy was a great use of Thomas' character, the viewers didn't expect much more from him until the episode ' The Thomas Thorne Affair ' aired.

After Thomas' backstory was revealed, the audience became much more sympathetic toward him, mourning the life he could have had with the woman he loved.

1 Kitty Is The Sweetest Character

Innocent and sweet-natured, Kitty is the type of friend everyone wants. With a smile that lights up a room and a loud personality that fills the empty spaces, it's impossible to dislike Kitty.

All the viewers and the ghosts want is Kitty's continued happiness, and it's in her brief moments of sadness that everyone falls apart. Although this character's future is unclear, there is some speculation that she may have been murdered by her step-sister. If this turns out to be true, the viewers will have a hard time recovering from Kitty's hidden trauma.

Screen Rant

Why prey's yautja are deadlier than the modern day species - predator theory explained.

As the Predator franchise begins exploring older versions of the Yautja, it's beginning to seem like they were originally far deadlier hunters.

  • Advanced technology makes the Predators worse hunters, as it lessens their skills and instincts.
  • In Predator vs Wolverine , Logan notes, "The fancier the tech, the cockier you get, and the more detached you are from the musk and bloodbeat of the thing you want dead."
  • As stories like Prey move away from the modern day, Predators actually get deadlier because they have to rely on their instincts, not tech.

Warning: contains spoilers for Predator vs Wolverine #4! The Predator franchise is teasing that the Yautja species may actually have become weaker over time, with the alien killer seen in Prey among the franchise's deadliest ever. It's an intriguing idea that stresses some of the major themes of the franchise and corresponds with the ideas set up in the movies.

In Benjamin Percy and Ken Lashley's Predator vs. Wolverine #4 , Logan undertakes his final battle against the Yautja that's been hunting him for a century. In their last bout, the Yautja lost its helmet, which was revealed to have been used in Weapon X's experiments on Wolverine . However, the lost gear also gave Logan a way to draw his foe back out into the open.

Using the helmet to lure the Predator to the Canadian wilderness, Wolverine notes that he could have gained an advantage by sabotaging it, rather than letting the Predator reclaim its armor. However, he also explains why he didn't - the better their technology, the worse that Yautja become as hunters. As Logan notes, "over and over again, technology has been the yautja's failing."

2023 Changed Predator Lore Forever, Transforming the Original Trilogy's Meaning

Advanced technology makes the predators worse hunters, the yautja are deadlier without the crutch of advanced weaponry.

Predator vs Wolverine follows a century-long battle between Wolverine and a deadly Yautja who considers him the ultimate prey - partly because of the unbreakable adamantium coating his bones. The two have clashed again and again, with Logan often winning not because he's the better hunter, but because he figures out a way to turn the Predator's hi-tech equipment against it. Wolverine has attacked the Predator with its own glaive, blinded its heat vision by creating an underwater cloud of his own blood, and eventually wins by creating a mud-covered decoy that the Yautja assumes is a way to trick its tech. All the way, the Yautja's tech makes it more powerful but also creates a host of weaknesses that Wolverine is able to exploit, just as Predator 's heroes always have, going back to Dutch covering himself in mud .

Not only does Logan start using the Yautja's tech to his advantage, but he notes that being able to rely on sci-fi weaponry actually lessens the Predator's own skills and instincts. Wolverine works out that the Predator has become so reliant on tech that it's started to prioritize the input of its gadgets over its own instincts. He explains:

The fancier the tech, the cockier you get, and the more detached you are from the musk and bloodbeat of the thing you want dead.

The Ultimate Predator Would Be a Yautja Without Sci-Fi Technology

The predators' ethos has been corrupted over time - which makes older stories even more exciting.

This idea is perfectly represented in Prey , which is set in 1719 and follows a Predator with less advanced technology. This Predator is particularly ruthless, savvy, and vicious in a way that certainly makes it seem deadlier than the plasmacaster-wielding grunts seen in movies like Alien vs Predator . Ultimately, this Predator is only taken down when its advanced tech is turned against it by Naru , raising the question of how a human could beat a Yautja without technological advantages to turn against it. The franchise seems to support the idea that the more stripped-down and unsophisticated a Predator is technologically, the deadlier it becomes .

While Predators have their own code of honor, the franchise ultimately criticizes them as a parody of big-game hunters. They come far, far better equipped than their prey and are usually righteously defeated by victims who are fighting for their lives while the Yautja fight for sport. Because of this, the Predators' technology will always ultimately be their Achilles Hell, as it's the thematic symbol of their arrogance and unfair advantage. However, with stories like Prey traveling back in time and depicting Predators who are less technologically overwhelming - and Marvel exploring the lore in various comic series - it's possible that fans will get to see a pure Predator at some point in the future - one whose skills and instincts haven't been blunted by a reliance on tech.

Predator vs Wolverine is available now from Marvel Comics.

Fears shop closures could create 'ghost town'

Keel Row Shopping Centre, in Blyth

Keel Row Shopping Centre in Blyth is set to close after it is redeveloped

  • Published 21 minutes ago

A town centre could become a "ghost town" if shops are not persuaded to stay, opposition councillors have claimed.

Labour representatives on Northumberland County Council warned that businesses in Blyth may leave for good if footfall continues to decline.

The Conservative-run council is developing new education, innovation and leisure facilities in the town, but local shop owners have said the work is driving customers away.

A council spokesperson said Blyth would be an "enviable market town again" once the developments are completed.

The developments are taking place at Keel Row Shopping Centre, which was acquired by the council in July.

Joanne Trewick, 57, owns a clothing shop in Market Square called ImpressU and said construction work had led to fewer customers walking through the door.

Joanne Trewick, owner of ImpressU

Joanne Trewick said fencing around the development had put people off coming to Blyth

She said: "I had a really good summer trade but as soon as the fences went up at the beginning of September my trade decreased quite considerably."

Ms Trewick said she was concerned about the future of her business, and was working to transfer her stock online.

"I will try and keep the shop open for as long as I can but at the end of the day if takings keep going down I won't be able to sustain it," she added.

Speaking at a recent council meeting, Labour councillor Anna Watson said that clothing retailer Bonmarché was closing its Blyth shop due to Keel Row shutting down.

She accused the council of not doing enough to keep businesses in the town.

“I can see the long-term vision, but I worry that there will be nothing left by then," she said.

"We could become a ghost town.”

The council said that businesses in the area, including Market Place, have remained open for business and have been promoted by the council.

Additional lighting was also installed in the area following feedback from local businesses.

A spokesman for the council added: “Blyth really will be an enviable market town again, once developments reach completion.

“Tenants at Keel Row Shopping Centre have been kept informed at every stage and the county council is working with all affected parties to provide support and to see if they can relocate in the town centre wherever possible, should they wish to do so, and offer support to employees."
