Repowered Turbine Mystic Cat Ready For First Sea Trial

A turbine engine-powered, canopied C5000  Mystic Powerboats  catamaran built in 2010 should be back on the water this week. That’s the word from John Cosker, the owner and founder of the DeLand, Fla., high-performance center console and catamaran builder.

turbieT54mystic

Renovated by James Grasham of Principle Propulsion Systems ,  this is one of two turbine engines that will power a 50-foot Mystic built in 2010.

“We’ve installed the engines in the boat and we’re hoping to start them today or tomorrow, then get it on the water later this week,” Cosker said.

The 50-footer is owned by Chris Cox, who also owns the Envy C5000 Mystic raceboat. If the current plans hold, Cox and Cosker will run the T-53 turbine engine-powered catamaran in the Florida Powerboat Club ’s upcoming Key West Poker Run.

According to Cosker, the original owner of the turbine-powered catamaran had the boat on a lift in back of his Miami home. A shore-power glitch caused the boat’s bilge pumps to fail, and its engine compartment eventually filled with rainwater. The owner donated the boat to a local charity, which eventually put it up for sale and was listed by a broker in Fort Lauderdale. Through TNT Custom Marine ’s Steven Fernandez, Cox saw the listing and immediately purchased the cat.

Cox and Cosker plan to pilot the repowered turbine cat in the upcoming Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run ( click image to  enlarge ).

Cosker sent the 50-footer’s original T-53s, which are producing 1,850 to 1,950 hp per side, to turbine-engine wizard James Grasham of Principle Propulsion Systems in Tucson, Ariz., to be refurbished.

“Jim was out here last week,” Cosker said. “If everything goes well we’ll be driving it to Key West in a couple of weeks.

“We haven’t had a turbine boat in here in seven or eight years,” he added, then laughed. “It’s funny. I can post pictures of what we do here every day on social media. But you post one picture of a turbine engine going into a boat and people just flip out.”

What’s the Fastest Power Boat in the World?

Speed boat spirit of Australia

Robertsf2012 / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0)

Across many walks of life, human beings are obsessed with speed. Some people love the thrill of watching motor vehicle racing. Others try to max out their speed on a bicycle. Still others prefer watching the Olympic games, witnessing races on foot and in a variety of other sports.

But for those of us who love being on the water, there’s nothing better than a super-fast power boat.

Power boats have been around as early as the internal combustion engine, which rose to prominence in the 19th Century. But as you can imagine, countless innovations have transformed not only how power boats look and function, but also how fast they can go when unimpeded.

Whether you’re in the market for a new power boat of your own, hoping to reach new speeds on the water, or are just fascinated by the thrill of seeking speed on open ocean, you’ll want to know: what’s the fastest power boat in the world?

How Fast Is Normal?

First, let’s establish a metric for how fast a “normal” boat can go. Top cruising speed for a yacht is something like 21 to 23 knots, or around 24 to 26 mph, while most yachts go much slower when actually “cruising.” If you look at some of the most powerful and popular power boats available to the public today, many of them can achieve a top speed close to, or even exceeding 100 mph—four times as fast as top cruising speed for a yacht—but even that speed pales in comparison to what some of the fastest power boats in the world have been able to achieve.

The Spirit of Australia: Fastest Power Boat in the World

The Guinness World Record for the top speed achieved on water is officially 275.97 knots, or over 317 mph, set by a craft called the Spirit of Australia back on October 8, 1978. It remains the record to this day, more than 40 years later. The record-setting run was at Blowering Dam Lake, in New South Wales, Australia. On a similar run in November 20, it is claimed that the craft was able to reach a better top speed at the same location, at nearly 345 mph. However, this is considered an “unofficial” speed.

As you might imagine, the Spirit of Australia was specifically engineered to set a water speed record, and was not commercially available for people to use when casually cruising on the ocean. It was designed (and operated) by a man named Ken Warby, who was able to engineer the vessel in his own backward.

The secret to the Spirit of Australia’s power was a set of Westinghouse J34 jet engines, which as the name suggests, were also used for aircraft and fighter jets. Together, they were able to generate 3,000 horsepower. Currently, the Spirit of Australia is retired, on permanent display at the Australian National Maritime Museum.

In the years (and decades) following Warby’s world record, there have been many world record attempts by other boating manufacturers and speed enthusiasts. However, none have been able to break the record set back in 1978.

Other Top Speed Contenders

It’s also worth noting some of the other power boats that have either come close to approaching the Spirit of Australia’s record, or have established a reputation of their own.

For example, there’s the Bluebird K7, one of the oldest pioneers in the history of speedboats. Helmed by Donald Campbell, the Bluebird set 7 separate speed run records between July 1955 and December 1964. Even back in 1964, this vessel was able to set a record by traveling 276 mph on the water. The story has a sad ending, however, as Campbell lost his life while attempting to set an even faster record, at 300 mph, back in 1967. The wreckage of the Bluebird was not recovered until a period between 2000 and 2001. Those remnants are currently preserved at the Ruskin Museum in Northern England.

There’s also the humorously named Problem Child, a more modern power boat that is currently the world’s fastest nitro drag boat. Sporting an incredibly powerful 8,000 horsepower engine, the Problem Child can reach a top speed of 262 mph in a matter of 3.5 seconds—which exceeds the performance of even speed-oriented land vehicles. The Problem Child is widely regarded as the fastest machine on water today, with consistent speeds of more than 250 mph.

Not far behind it is the Mystic Powerboats C5000 Turbine, powered by twin 1850 horsepower engines for a total power of 3,700 HP. Cruising speeds of 150 mph are easy for this boat, but its highest record speed is 250 mph. Even more impressive, the Mystic Powerboats C5000 Turbine can host up to 6 passengers—though it may not be able to reach those record-approaching top speeds with extra passengers on board.

Buying a Power Boat of Your Own

Unfortunately, most of the record-setting vessels in this article aren’t available for purchase; instead, they were designed as individual crafts with a singular purpose. However, there are hundreds of power boats available to quench your thirst for speed on the water—and many of them are capable of reaching speeds close to, or even exceeding 100 mph.

If you’re interested in getting a power boat for speed performance, make sure you get to know the variables that can affect your speed in the open water, including the brand of the manufacturer, the type of engine, the shape of the craft, and the carrying capacity.

Are you interested in getting a super-fast power boat of your own? Check out our selection of power boats and yachts for sale , from dozens of different manufacturers. Buy new or used, from individuals and manufacturers all over the world to find your best possible fit!

A blue speed boat racing across the water.

4 Fastest Boats in History

For most people, boats are an avenue for a leisurely summer afternoon. But some innovators see the water as a race track. As long as boats have existed, people have been trying to use new technology to make them faster than they were before and as a result, speed records have been reset many times over. Here are the four fastest boats in history.

Mystic Powerboats C5000 Turbine: 250 mph

The Florida-based company Mystic Powerboats created the C5000 Turbine to be historically fast. It is powered by two twin 1,850 horsepower engines for a total power of 3,700 hp. The speedboat has a cruising speed of 150 mph and has a top speed of 250 mph. The C5000 runs on diesel and has a fuel tank capacity of 600 gallons that enables it to reportedly run for 15 hours.

The catamaran is nearly 50 feet long and Mystic Powerboats used the rest of the space to add more capabilities to the C5000. Some of the equipment onboard includes a log speedometer, plotter, advanced navigation center, cockpit air conditioning, and GPS.

It also has cockpit speakers, a radio, and a CD player for those who want to have an old-fashioned listening party while moving at breakneck speeds. According to TheYachtMarket , the C5000 can host up to six passengers.

Problem Child: 262 mph

The title of the world’s fastest nitro drag boat goes to the Problem Child. The boat is the creation of drag boat racers “Fast” Eddie Knox and Larry Bless. Thanks to an 8,000 horsepower engine, the Problem Child can reach speeds of 262 mph in an astounding 3.5 seconds, faster than many land vehicles engineered for speed can muster.

Once it hits peak performance, the drag boat has been known to leave behind a wall of water in its wake. Problem Child won multiple international championships in the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series.

Bluebird K7: 276 mph

The Bluebird K7 was a pioneering piece of technology. Launched in January 1955 by Donald Campbell, the K7 was the first successful jet-powered hydroplane ever. Before Campbell and his boat hit the water, the world water speed was 178 mph.

In 1964, he smashed that record by going 276 mph at Dumbleyung Lake in Western Australia. This was the seventh speed record Campbell had set with the K7. The feat also made Campbell the first and currently the only person to set world land and water speed records in the same year.

That remarkable need for speed sadly has a tragic downside. While trying to record a speed of 300 mph with the K7 in 1967, Campbell died in an accident at Coniston Water in England. His daughter Gina gifted the wreckage to the Ruskin Museum who then restored the boat to the point that the K7 completed a series of test runs on Loch Fad in 2018 at about 150 mph.

Spirit of Australia: 317 mph

The fastest boat in the world was built in a Sydney backyard. Ken Warby created the Spirit of Australia at his home and ran on Westinghouse J34 jet engines that were commonly used for aircraft and fighter jets.

The wooden speed boat set the world water record in 1978 after clocking a speed of 317.6 mph on the Tumut River near the Blowering Dam in Australia. The Spirit of Australia is permanently displayed at the Australian National Maritime Museum.

In the early ’90s, Warby built a successor named the Aussie Spirit, but never made a record attempt with the jet boat. He then worked on Spirit of Australia II with his son Dave which was powered by a Bristol Siddeley Orpheus jet engine taken from a Fiat G.91 fighter plane. The boat is currently undergoing design modifications.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
