By The Guide Liverpool

Our ultimate guide to Halloween in Liverpool 2023

It’s time to start getting excited about all things Halloween – we’re already eyeing up the big chocolates tins for you-know-what – and Liverpool’s got loads of amazing devilish dates for your diary.

If you want to have a ghost of a chance of grabbing tickets for the spookiest nights of the year, you’ve got to be quick.

Here’s our ultimate guide to Halloween 2023 in Liverpool!

Newsham Scream Park

@theguideliverpool This is Newsham Park Hospital! And this Halloween, something truly terrifying is stalking the cursed corridors and decayed dormitories. Asylum Entertainment Limited have teamed up with one of Europe’s biggest scare attraction companies to take over the derelict building and create a horrifying Halloween vision which will have no comparison. Three scare attractions will terrify guests – Insanitorium and The Orphanage aged 14+ and the strictly aged 18+ HELLuminati. Each experience will wind through the dark bowels of the building, filled with deepening dread and moments of sheer blood-curdling panic, as guests follow each nightmarish path through Newsham Scream Park. It’s open from today (FRIDAY 13th!) – November 5th. The attention to detail inside the mazes is phenomenal. The actors are fantastic! If you are wanting to visit the HELLuminati attraction, best to get to that one first as you can wait a fair while in the queue… BUT… It’s worth it! #TheGuideLiverpool #NewshamPark #NewshamParkHospital #NewshamScreamPark #Halloween #friday13th #Scary #Liverpool #ThingsToDoInLiverpool ♬ Stranger Things – Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein

It’s shaping up to be the UK’s scariest attraction this year and it’s here in Newsham Park – not just for one night but three weeks! Newsham Scream Park is a uniquely terrifying experience that’s been created inside the old abandoned Newsham Park Hospital. There are two scare attractions, the Insanitorium and The Orphanage for aged 14+ and the strictly over-18s HELLuminati which is definitely not for the faint-hearted. From October 13-November 5.

Newsham Scream Park Set To Terrify Visitors This Halloween Season

Photo of Editor

The historic and supposedly haunted Newsham Park Hospital in Liverpool will become Newsham Scream Park this Halloween.

Three terrifying scare attractions will wind through the building’s creepy corridors and decaying dormitories, filled with horrifying thrills at every turn – Insanitorium, The Orphanage and HELLuminati.

Long ago, Newsham Park Hospital, a Victorian Grade II listed building, was the site of a Seamen’s orphanage, hospital, asylum and nursing home and now, by night, the walls echo with fragmented memories.

Dark passages lead to shadowy basements and staircases descend into darkness, where claustrophobic spaces link to the past. Eddies of dust swirl across the courtyard when there’s no wind. A pervasive chill lingers in the main rooms and halls no matter the time of year. The site has wheelchairs and trolleys from decades ago, instruments of control and suppression.

Long since abandoned to the elements, Newsham Park Hospital is a mecca for ghost hunters and spectral thrill seekers, with many claiming to have seen spirits, heard whispers or felt the touch of something cold on their spine. It is regularly cited as one of the UK’s most haunted buildings, stalked by those who used to govern it or be its unfortunate guests. Many believe its history has left an indelible presence lurking in the corners, emerging only at night.

And this Halloween, something truly terrifying will stalk the cursed corridors and decayed dormitories – Newsham Scream Park.

Asylum Entertainment Limited have teamed up with one of Europe’s biggest scare attraction companies take over the derelict building and create a horrifying Halloween vision which will have no comparison.

Insanitorium and The Orphanage are included in the base ticket price and HELLuminati is extra with dates running from Friday 13 October to Sunday 5 November. The courtyard at Newsham Scream Park will include live music and DJs, licensed bars, food vendors and an array of tarot card readers, mystics, spirit board guides and other curious characters.

Newsham Park Hospital

Newsham Scream Park – The Three Scare Attractions

Insanitorium – The Doctor will see you now…

Check in for your appointment at The Goodwell Institute, where the masterminds of unethical medical science are attempting to discover the answer to the eternal question: what happens to the soul after death?

But be warned, The Invasia Procedure is not going to plan, and now delirium rules the wards inside the Insanitorium – you would be MAD to miss it…

The Orphanage – There will be no mercy…

Since 1913 The Blessed Sisters of Mercy have housed orphaned and unwanted waifs and strays at The Orphanage, providing an education and a home, dictated by a stern religious philosophy.

But home is not always where the heart is, and at the rotten core of the sisterhood dwells an ancient evil first invoked by Sister Mary Mercy, and which must be appeased in the most diabolic way…

HELLuminati – Membership is open

Hidden within the bowels of the Asylum lies the headquarters of an ancient secret society known as the Helluminati; a worldwide network of wealthy individuals with omnipotent global control.

The members amuse themselves by doctoring what they call ‘the meat’; obtained by illegal auctions in the deepest parts of the dark web.

Membership is now open. But are you suitable to join the sick and twisted minds of the members, and their enigmatic leader – Omega, inside HELLuminati, or are you simply ‘meat’?

Newsham Scream Park Running from Friday 13 October – Sunday 5 November on selected dates 11B Orphan Drive, Tuebrook, Liverpool, L6 7UN First scare attraction from 6pm – last entry is 9.30pm Insanitorium and The Orphanage – £25 + booking fee (aged 14+) HELLuminati – £15 per pair + booking fee (strictly aged 18+ only)

Tickets for Newsham Scream Park go on sale on Friday 7 July 10am via https://newshamscreampark.com/

The Most Haunted Places in Liverpool

It’s that time of year again; crunchy leaves, Yankee candles and pumpkin spiced errrrrrrrrthing. But, if you’re anything like us, the best part of Autumn is, obviously, Halloween. So, if you’re looking for some spooky adventures this month, here are some of the most haunted places in Liverpool to visit this season.

Haunted Streets in Liverpool

Liverpool certainly isn’t short on beautiful streets to saunter down, but these are some of the most prominent sites for a spooky stroll….

Haunted places in Liverpool

Though this Liverpool hotspot was made famous by that Beatles song; Penny Lane was actually named after one of Liverpool’s Slave Ship owner. I know, we’ve only gone and ruined that one for you, haven’t we.

Anyway, the famous road is home (allegedly) to ‘The Penny Lane Poltergeist – who has been around since Victorian times and is said to play mischievous tricks on people passing by.

There have also been sightings of a little girl combing her long blonde hair at the window of Number 44 – so keep an eye out.

Sweeting Street

Sweeting Street Liverpool

Parallel to the lofty banking halls and marble facades of Castle street, this crooked little alleyway feels like a time machine taking you back to Liverpool in the 1800’s.

Sweeting Street, named after Alderman Thomas Sweeting who was Mayor of Liverpool in 1698, is home to two very active ghosts. The first is Rose Poole, whose five golden rings were stolen from her corpse by her husband as she lay in her coffin. Her restless soul is said to wander up and down Sweeting Street waiting for revenge…

The second spirit is said to be that of a little girl, who hit her head and died while playing with her friends on Sweeting Street back int he 1800’s – her ghost is thought to still skip up and down the street, waiting for someone to come and play with her.

Pickwick Street

pickwick street liverpool

Toxteth is thought to be a true paranomal hotspot, with hundreds of ghostly encounters recorded over the last 200 years, but none more common that the famous Pickwick Poltergeist; a malevolent spirit that was first reported over 130 years ago.

One reported encounter involved a woman being lifted from her bed by an unexplained force, while other residents on the street have heard bangs, wailing and mysterious scratching in the dead of night.

There have also been numerous reports of slamming doors and an overwhelming feeling of dread at several properties – and one couple actually left their home because it was allegedly shaking so much they thought it was going ot collapse.

Hope Street

Hope street Liverpool Haunted

Named Hope Street because it connects the two stunning Cathedrals of Liverpool, this main road in the Georgian Quarter is said to be a real feasting ground for restless spirits.

The site of the Metropolitan Cathedral was once the largest workhouse in Britain, where 4000 troubled souls worked their fingers to the bone (and many to their death).

It’s been reported that a dark spectre now walks up the street to the steps of the cathedral once the cover of night falls and some paranormal investigators have claimed that it is the victim of a fire in 1862 when 21 children and two nurses died.

Haunted Sites in Liverpool

It’s not just the streets of Liverpool that are thought to be the home of the undead, there are also plenty of sites to visit if you’re hoping for a creepy encounter…

haunted nights liverpool

Built over 600 years ago, it’s hardly a surprise that Speke Halls has been voted one of the most haunted places in Liverpool.

There have been multiple sightings of ghosts roaming the halls, including ‘The White Lady’, a ‘see-through’ gardener and a terrifyingly solid-looking priest. Oh, and if that’s not enough, apparently there’s a werewolf-like creature that haunts the gardens too.

Might just be my ex though.

Newsham Park Hospital

haunted nights liverpool

An abandoned building that was used as a Victorian orphanage, a medical hospital and a mental asylum? It’s hardly surprising that Newsham Park Hospital is on the Liverpool’s most haunted list!

Unsurprisingly, this building’s hat-trick of creepy-ness doesn’t end there; a female nurse is said to have complained of ‘strange’ sightings whilst she worked at the hospital… and was later found dead on one of the wards. That escalated quickly, didn’t it.

It is also said that patients at the hospital would constantly speak to people who weren’t there and mention ‘the children’ to staff. Since it was abandoned in 1997, there have been hundreds of reported sightings of ghosts and inexplicable voices. But even if you don’t see any spirits, the broken beds, anti-suicide grilles and decrepid wheelchairs that you can still see rotting away in the rooms and corridors are creepy AF.

St James’ Cemetery

haunted nights liverpool

What sort of haunted Liverpool list would this be if we didn’t include somewhere where every step you take there is a body 6 foot beneath you?

That’s right, St. James’ Cemetery, situated underneath Liverpool’s beautiful Anglican cathedral, houses the remains of nearly 58,000 people – from workhouse kids to Kitty Wilkinson.

So when it comes to ghostly sightings, I guess you can take your pick!

Haunted Pubs in Liverpool

Want some spirits with your spirits? We’ve got you! Let’s take a look at the creepiest places to get a drink in Liverpool….

The Post Office

post-office-haunted-liverpool

17 Old Post Office Place, Liverpool L1 3DH England

Known to scousers as ‘The Postie’, this is still a popular haunt for after-work drinks.

Back in 1902, The Post Office pub Liverpool was taken over by a man called Thomas Henshaw and his wife Annie, who allegedly discovered a tiny, loacked room upstairs with it’s keyhole filled with putty…

Stories from the regulars warned the couple not to open the locked door because it contained a terrifying spirit… but Thomas Henshaw ignored their tales. One night, one of Thomas’friends who was staying at the pub, unblocked the keyhole and peered inside… but what did he see?

Nobody knows, but it was something so horrifying that he was said to never speak sense again and was later committed to a lunatic asylum.

Would you dare to explore the tiny rooms of The Old Post Office…. do so if you dare!

Ye Hole in Ye Wall

Ye Hole in Ye wall Liverpool haunted

4 Hackins Hey, Liverpool L2 2AW

Claiming to be Liverpool’s oldest pub, Ye Hole in Ye Wall is said to be home to many lost spirits. One of which, is an old punter who is said to wreak havoc for locals trying to enjoy a drink.

But if you don’t see any ghosts, there’s still another scary story to Ye Hole: believe it or not it was also the last pub in Liverpool to allow women to drink there, waiting until 1977 to let the girls through the doors! Terrifying!

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms

phillarmonic liverpool

36 Hope St, Liverpool L1 9BX

The infamous Philharmonic Dining Rooms is renowned for being one of the most beautifully ornate places to drink in Liverpool.

Back in the 1800’s it was a Gentleman’s Club reserved solely for the ‘elite’, which explains the wood paneling, couches straight out of Hugh Hefner’s wet dreams and the famously lavish men’s toilets.

But Philharmonic Dining Rooms have also gained bit of a reputation as a paranormal hotspot, with many sightings of the ghost of a clown making a nuisance of itself at the bar! There’s also repots of Banshee-like wails coming from the cellars and an old man in a cloth cap who sits in a corner and mutters away to himself, before disappearing upon closer inspection.

Peter Kavagnah’s

Peter Kavagnah’s Liverpool

2-6 Egerton St, Liverpool L8 7LY

Peter Kavanagh’s is one of Liverpool’s quirkiest pubs, showcasing spooky caricatures carved into benches and all sorts of strange and unusual paraphernalia adorning the walls.

Back in 1844, it’s said that the regulars of Peter Kavanagh’s held a séance in which a spirit called Marmaduke came through, and has continued to wander the hallways to this day.

Whether you believe the stories is up to you, but with super-cheap drinks and loads of things to look at, it’s definitely worth visiting this quirky little Liverpool pub for a drink.

The Slaughter House

The Slaughter House Liverpool

13-15 Fenwick St, Liverpool L2 7LS

This eerie pub-turned-comedy club dates dates back to the 17th century, and almost all of the landlords have a spooky tale to tell about the Fenwick Street Boozer.

Paula Harrington, owner of Laughterhouse Comedy, told the ECHO : “There have been times were our hair’s been moving because something has been touching it. We’ve also heard laughing and whistling when no one has been there.”

In fact, the pub is considered to be SO haunted that back in 2017, TV show ‘Most Haunted’ paid a visit and host Yvette Fielding allegedly saw a spectre called Albert who was “looking after horses” when he was pushed down The Slaughter House stairs to his death.

Haunted Hotels in Liverpool

Finally, if you’re planning a spooky weekend away, let’s look at the scariest places to stay in Liverpool…

The Adelphi Hotel

The Adelphi Hotel

Back in 2015, Liverpool’s famous Adelphi was named the most haunted hotel in the whole of the UK – with hand prints, noises in the nights and actual ghosts all spotted by guests.

Ghostly author, Tom Slemen, identified a number of ghostly apparitions that are said to still wander the halls of this old hotel, including:

  • Raymond Brown, a 15-year-old pageboy who is said to have died after he became trapped in the baggage room lift of the Adelphi Hotel in August 1961. His ghost, still wearing his cap and uniform, has reportedly picked up the luggage of guests and carried it off to various rooms and corridors before vanishing.
  • An unknown whistler often spotted in the lift of the hotel is said to breathe down the neck of guests and sometimes taps them on the shoulder.
  • “George”, a man in a tuxedo with a prominent moustache, is reported to call out to members of the public for help from a certain window on the Brownlow Hill side of the hotel. It’s said that he took his own life at the Adelphi sometime in the 1930s.
  • An unidentified female pickpocket ghost is reported to have been seen rifling through guests clothes and belongings in the early hours. She always disappears into thin air when she is challenged.

Are you brave enough to make a BOOking…?

March 17, 2022

Liverpool: birthplace of The Beatles, Capital of Culture 2012 and one of the most aesthetic cities in the UK – but did you know it’s also home to some of the creepiest, most historic venues in the UK?

So, whether you’re after a ghostly pub crawl, or just fancy being a full-time creep, we’ve taken a look and here are some of the most haunted places in Liverpool to visit!

Haunted pubs in Liverpool

The post office pub, liverpool.

the post office pub Liverpool haunted pub

Whilst The Postie might be a haunt for after-work drinks these days, legend has it that in 1902, The Post Office pub Liverpool was being run by a man called Thomas Henshaw and his wife Annie. When they took over the pub, they allegedly found a tiny room upstairs which was locked up and the keyhole was plugged with putty.

The old men who drank in The Postie warned the couple that the room shouldn’t ever be opened as it contained a terrifying spirit.

But, ignoring the rumour, one of Thomas’ old friends who was staying at the pub one night, unblocked the keyhole and looked in… only to see something which horrified him so deeply he never spoke sense again and was committed to a lunatic asylum.

Peter Kavagnah’s, Liverpool

Peter kavanagh's haunted pub in Liverpool

With spooky caricatures carved into benches, and all sorts of strange and unusual paraphernalia adorning the walls, it’s hardly surprising that the historic Peter Kavagnah’s is considered one of the most creepy pubs in Liverpool.

The story goes that a séance held in 1844 called a spirit called Marmaduke, (which sounds like a refugee from The Magic Roundabout) which still wanders through the walls to this day. Can’t say I’ve seen anything myself, but with doubles for dirt cheap it’s definitely worth visiting this quirky little Liverpool pub for a drink.

Ye Hole in Ye Wall, Liverpool

ye hole in ye wall haunted pub in Liverpool

Along with approximately 73 other places in Liverpool, Ye Hole claims to be the oldest pub in town. But, while they all fight it out for the crown, let’s talk about ghosts. Apparently, Ye hole in Ye wall is haunted by an old man that is said to wreak havoc for punters trying to have a drink.

Believe it or not though, that’s not even the scariest thing about Ye Hole. It was also the last pub in Liverpool to allow women to drink there, waiting until 1977!!

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms, Liverpool

the philharmonic dining rooms Liverpool haunted place

The last haunted Liverpool pub on the list, but definitely not one to ignore, is the infamous Phil; renowned for being one of the most ornate places to drink in Liverpool. Back in the 1800’s it was a very upper class Gentleman’s Club, which explains the wood paneling, couches straight out of a porno and the famously lavish men’s toilets.

Other haunted places in Liverpool

If you want some Liverpool ghosts without the spirits, (excuse the pun) here are some other haunted places in Liverpool that are worth a visit if you’re into freaking yourself out:

St. James’ Cemetery, Liverpool

st james cemetery liverpool haunted cemetery

Under the Anglican Cathedral, (well worth a visit in its own right) you’ll find St. James’ Cemetery which opened in 1829 and contains over 57000 bodies.

Literally everywhere you walk within the grounds is a grave, (nice) which has obviously led to a lot of ghostly rumours. The most common sighting is of William Huskisson, who is often seen leaving his grand mausoleum, wearing a top hat and walking with a limp.

The Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool

the Adelphi hotel Liverpool haunted hotel

This hotel has stood on this site since 1826, so it’s hardly surprising that the building has its own share of resident spooks.

Guests who have stayed have often reported seeing the ghost of ‘George’ standing next to their bed on the fifth floor, (no info on whether he introduces himself by name but let’s neatly gloss over that.) who was believed to have been a guest who fell, jumped, or was pushed out of a window at the hotel in the 1920’s.

Some of the other big players who are said to haunt the Aldephi include a bell boy who was killed when he was caught between floors in the old lift, and a young woman with long black hair and weird ‘staring eyes’.

Penny Lane, Liverpool

penny lane liverpool

Penny Lane is named after a Liverpool slave ship owner, which is obviously hugely problematic because it’s also been preserved in time by the famous song by The Beatles from 1967. But that’s the least of the famous street’s worries tbh, thanks to the Penny Lane poltergeist who spooks tourists while they get their Instagram shots .

A little girl is said to be the resident spook causing the chaos, and she has sometimes been seen combing her long blonde hair in the top window of number 44.

Newsham Park Hospital, Liverpool (probably the scariest of the haunted places in Liverpool)

newsham park hospital Liverpool haunted hospital

Newsham park is arguably the creepiest place to visit in the whole of Liverpool as the building itself was first an orphanage back in Victorian era, then it was a medical hospital and a mental asylum before closing in 1997.

Reports of haunted activity date way back to when a nurse working with patients in the hospital complained of ‘strange’ sightings and was later found dead on one of the wards. Since then, thousands of people have shared their spooky experiences at Newsham Park, including my own little mum who worked next door to the site in the 90’s at a care home.

One night shift, she walked downstairs to find a little girl rooting through the record box – as real as you and me – and she gasped and said ‘oh love what are you doing here let’s get you home’ and she vanished in front of her eyes.

Another former employee when Newsham Park was a hospital said;

“I remember going down into the basement to get a blanket one night. As I walked in I saw a man, in a white coat with no head walk past and straight through the wall. I flew out of the room, it was terrifying.

“Another time I was at reception and there used to be a stone staircase opposite. I looked up and saw woman in Victorian dress. She was there for a second and then disappeared.

“I found out that she was the old matron from when it used to be an orphanage.”

Speke Hall, Liverpool

Speke hall liverpool haunted

Built over 400 years ago in the Victorian era by the devoutly Catholic Norris family, Speke Hall is now a tourist trap for families looking to desperately insert a bit of culture into their kid’s weekend. But you might get more than you bargained for, because there’s apparently a whole entourage of Liverpool ghosts roaming the halls including a white lady, a Victorian gardener, a ghostly priest, and a werewolf-like beast.

There have also been loads of reports of footsteps in the upper corridors and the sound of kids crying, and if you’re thinking of paying Speke Hall a visit I should warn you about the nauseousness that a lot of punters claim to feel when they walk in.

Croxteth Hall, Liverpool

croxteth hall Liverpool

Croxteth hall hit headlines back in 2009 when CCTV footage showed an alleged ghost appearing from the bushes, moving along a path before disappearing. The building has been around since 1575 though, so who exactly the ghost was meant to be is still up for dispute.

Pickwick Street, Liverpool

pickwick street Liverpool

Last one the haunted places in Liverpool list isn’t really somewhere to actively visit, but if you’re driving through Toxteth you could spot something spooky in the windows of number 63 Pickwick Street, which is apparently home to a poltergeist from the 1800’s, who (allegedly) lifted a woman out of her bed as recently as the 80’s.

The 6 Most Haunted Places in Liverpool

Liverpool is home to Walker Art Gallery, the Liverpool Metropolitan Museum, and the Cavern Club. The Cavern Club, of course, is the first venue in which The Beatles played regular gigs.

As well as these iconic places, Liverpool is home to some pretty terrifying ghost stories and haunted locations. In this article, we will give the ghosts of Liverpool the attention they deserve!

Read on for the six most haunted places in Liverpool.

1. St. James Cemetery

St James Cemetery Liverpool

I’m fairly certain it’s a scientific fact that all cemeteries are haunted. Some might dispute that, but it’s pretty hard for anybody who has ever visited St. James’ Cemetery to deny that the place has been the scene of some pretty unexplainable, and quite often terrifying,  events.

There are an estimated 58,000 bodies buried in St. James’ Cemetery, and over a dozen noted spirits, although many paranormal experts believe the amount to be much higher. Among the various ghosts who dwell within St. James’ Cemetery is the spirit of a former member of parliament, William Huskisson.

On the 15 th of September 1830, Huskisson earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first person to be run over by George Stephenson’s locomotive engine Rocket . Huskisson’s mangled corpse was entombed at St. James’ Cemetery and sightings of his ghost began shortly after.

William Huskisson’s spirit has been seen hobbling throughout the graveyard and loitering outside his grand mausoleum, still showing the scars of the tragedy which ended his life.

2. Newsham Park Hospital

Newsham Park Liverpool

Newsham Park Hospital is today nothing more than one of many abandoned Victorian buildings throughout Liverpool, but it has a long and deeply disturbing history. Construction of the building was completed in 1874 and it was initially used as an orphanage before becoming a hospital. It spent its final years as a mental asylum before closing its doors in 1997.

Sightings of ghosts and unexplainable events at Newsham Park Hospital are many and varied and can be traced back to the building’s time as a medical facility. A nurse at the hospital became one of the first people to complain of paranormal activity, claiming she had witnessed a number of strange events which could not be explained by anything in the known world. She was later found dead in a ward and eerie occurrences at the location increased tenfold.

Patients at the hospital also complained of an otherworldly presence, and many reported seeing children standing in their rooms and playing in the halls. Many of these patients have since become a part of the paranormal activity themselves.

3. Speke Hall

Speke Hall Liverpool

The 16 th Century Speke Hall is one of the most unique buildings in Liverpool and was originally home to one Edward Norris, who was the patriarch of a deeply religious Catholic family.

The Tudor building is absolutely massive and ensured plenty of room for the Norris family. The size of the home remains a significant advantage to this day, as it is said to be haunted by many spirits.

Edward Norris, while extremely religious, had more than his fair share of problems with alcohol and gambling, and began racking up crippling debts shortly after the birth of his son. Mary, his wife, was so concerned by her husband’s inability to control himself that she threw her son from the window of the home’s Tapestry Room, where he landed in the waters of the lake below and drowned. Mary then flung herself from the window and met the same end of her son. Despite her attempts to leave Speke Hall forever, Mary’s ghost has been witnessed by visitors as she glides through the Tapestry Room, perhaps reliving the last moments of her pitiful life.

Because the Norris family was so heavily involved with the Roman Catholic Church, priests were a frequent sight at the house. The ghost of a Catholic priest is still said to dwell within the walls of Speke Hall and appears as an almost solid being. Visitors to the home have also encountered the apparition of a Victorian gardener, still going about his work in the afterlife.

Many of the spirits at Speke Hall don’t seem to be disturbed by the presence of the living, but at least one spirit is not shy about making its contempt for visitors known. Many visitors have reported experiencing an uneasy feeling in the Blue Room, where the shadowy figure of a man has been seen by more than a few. The spirit has made a name for itself as an unpleasant, menacing spirit, and has been heard telling guests to “get out”.

4. 44 Penny Lane

Penny Lane Liverpool

Penny Lane was immortalised in the Beatles song of the same name, and the street has since become a site of pilgrimage for fans of The Fab Four, although that can be said for the entirety of Liverpool.

As delightful as Paul McCartney made Penny Lane sound in the song, the street has a dark history and number 44 Penny Lane is the site of one of the most disturbing hauntings not just in Liverpool, but in the entire United Kingdom.

The site is said to be home to at least two spirits, one of which is clearly malevolent. Those familiar with the ghost stories of Penny Lane will tell you that Number 44 became home to a particularly aggressive poltergeist during the Victorian period, and the ghost does not seem to have left the premises.

A printing shop was set up at the address during the 1970s, and the daily influx of new people did little to soothe the spirit’s anger. The premises were investigated during this period after neighbours complained of an unrelenting racket which began every night after the owners of the shop had gone home. Investigators failed to find a logical explanation for the activity, which only strengthened the rumours that the site was home to a violent spirit.

Passersby have also claimed to have seen the spirit of a little girl with long blonde hair standing in the window of 44 Penny Lane, playing with her hair as she stares at the people on the street. Her identity is not known, which is probably one of many reasons why she wasn’t among the colourful characters The Beatles sang about.

5. Adelphi Hotel

Adelphi Hotel Liverpool

The Adelphi Hotel is one of the most central hotels in Liverpool and is in close proximity to some of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, meaning the hotel has not experienced a shortage of guests.

Rooms are also much in demand among paranormal buffs, as the building has long been rumoured to be haunted.

The site on which the Adelphi Hotel is built has a long history, and first became the location of a hotel in 1826.

The original hotel proved popular with travellers for much the same reasons it is popular today and was demolished half a century after opening in order to make way for a larger hotel, which was eventually purchased by Midland Railway and replaced with the hotel which stands on the site today.

Though it is today a frequent source of ire for health inspectors and food critics, the Adelphi Hotel was, in its early years, considered to be one of the most glamorous hotels in the city, and welcomed major stars such as Frank Sinatra, Laurel and Hardy, and Bob Dylan.

It is safe to assume none of these guests knew about the ghosts which are said to be on a prolonged stay at the hotel.

One of the most frequently spotted spirits at the hotel is that of Raymond Brown, a pageboy who died after becoming trapped in the baggage room lift at the age of fifteen.

Although the accident occurred in 1961, Richard is still seen wandering throughout the hotel, clad in his uniform and offering a helping hand to guests struggling with their bags. Some who have encountered the pageboy swear he carried their bags all the way to their room before vanishing.

Guests of the Adelphi Hotel also have the opportunity to become acquainted with George, a man who took his own life at the hotel in the 1930s.

George, who appears in a tuxedo with a toothbrush moustache, is also known to Liverpool residents as he has a habit of shouting from a window to the people on the street below.

6. Croxteth Hall

Croxteth Hall Liverpool

The magnificent 230-room Croxteth Hall in the West Derby suburb of Liverpool is considered one of, if not the most haunted location in Liverpool.

This palatial grade II listed former country estate dates back to the 16th century when it was the home to the Molyneaux family, the Earls of Sefton.

It remained in the hands of the family until 1972, when the last Earl died, after which it was passed on to Liverpool Council.

Croxteth hall had been known to generations of locals as being incredibly haunted, but it was footage that appeared on the news in 2009 that its haunted reputation extended nationally.

In the CCTV footage, the figure of what appears to be the shape of a man appears from the bushes, slowly moving along a path leading up to the house before disappearing.

Many people believe this is the ghost of Hugh William Osbert Molyneaux, the 7th Earl of Sefton, who sadly died in 1972.

Legend has it that Merseyside is home to some pretty gruesome ghosts hiding around some of the regions most spooky buildings.

From the haunting of Newsham Park Hospital, which is used regularly for ghost hunts and spooky events, to one of the city's most popular theatres, there are plenty of ghosts stories.

But what are the creepy tales that go alongside the creepy buildings?

We have rounded up 11 of the most haunted destinations in Liverpool, are you brave enough to visit?

The Adelphi Hotel

haunted nights liverpool

Before the hotel opened, another hotel stood on the site in 1826.

This hotel was then replaced by another 50 years later. Then in 1911, the process of replacing started and the hotel first opened its doors as Britannia Adelphi in 1914.

Rumour has it, a hotel with that much history has picked up plenty of ghosts along the way.

Many guests have reported seeing the ghost of 'George' standing next to their bed on the fifth floor.

He is believed to have been a guest who fell, jumped or pushed out of a window at the hotel in the 1920's.

Other ghosts at the hotel include a bell boy who was tragically killed when he was caught between floors in the old lift and a young lady with long black hair and weird 'staring eyes'.

It may be famous because of its links to the Beatles but apparently there are more than just tourists lingering around.

The street is named after a Liverpool slave ship owner but most people will associate the street name with the song by The Beatles from 1967.

And those who don't associate the street name with the Beatles, associate it with the 'Penny Lane Poltergeist'.

Apparently, number 44 has been home to the very durable poltergeist that first became active in Victorian times.

A young girl combing her long blonde hair also appears at the window of the house, but her identity remains a mystery.

Newsham Park Hospital

The building was once an orphanage dating back to the Victorian era, then it was a medical hospital and a mental asylum before closing in 1997.

Reports go way back to when a female nurse complained of 'strange' sightings whilst working with patients at the hospital. She was later found dead on one of the wards.

Patients at the hospital also constantly mentioned 'children' and spoke of people who weren't there.

Recent visitors have reported sightings of ghosts and hearing disembodied voices at the cavernous building. Broken beds, anti-suicide grilles and wheelchairs are all still sat in decaying rooms and corridors.

Speaking to the ECHO, one former worker said he still has nightmares and is traumatised by the ‘pure evil’ in the building.

He said: "I remember going down into the basement one night to get a blanket to keep myself warm. As I walked in I saw a man, in a white coat with no head walk past and straight through the wall. I flew out of the room, it was terrifying.

"Another time I was at reception and there used to be a stone staircase opposite. I looked up and saw woman in Victorian dress. She was there for a second and then disappeared.

"I found out that she was the old matron from when it used to be an orphanage."

However, those who have made the trip, get more than what they bargained for.

People report seeing a ghost walking around the mill.

He is said to be a former miller who was murdered in the early 19th century.

As if that wasn't strange enough, Bidston Hill is also classed as a hot spot for UFO sightings.

Dozens have reported 'dark disc-shaped' objects hovering above nearby houses.

Pickwick Street

The house up for rent, number 63, has had paranormal activity reported, which experts claim goes back to 1880

One house in this Toxteth street is reportedly haunted by a poltergeist that has ‘lifted a woman out of her bed’ .

63 Pickwick Street has seen ‘significant paranormal activity’ reported by previous inhabitants - with one expert saying it is haunted by a poltergeist from the 1800s.

The Empire Theatre

The theatre dates way back to 1866 but was demolished, re-built and and re-opened in 1925.

Many believe it was the former resident, Hugh William Osbert Molyneux, the 7th Earl.

The Queensway Tunnel

haunted nights liverpool

Spooky things go on in the Queensway Tunnel and we're not just talking about the filming of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 was filmed in the tunnel.

It was constructed between 1925 and 1934.

A ghost of a woman has been seen by many motorists, and it's said to be the ghost of a woman who died after falling from a motorbike decades ago.

An old fashioned 1960's police car has also been seen driving in the tunnel.

Knowsley Hall

haunted nights liverpool

The hall was once the ancestral home of the Stanley family, the Earls of Derby.

It has since been restored and converted for functions.

The hall is surrounded by 2,500 acres of parkland, which contains Knowsley Safari Park . It's known the building has been on the site since the 12th century.

In 2009 a paranormal group apparently captured a blurred picture of a ghost which had appeared to them as an orb.

Two members of the group died a week later and the ghost now takes on the name 'banshee'.

Several roads near the estate are also said to be haunted by ghostly vintage cars with no drivers, including a limousine.

Ye Hole In Ye Wall, a haunted Liverpool pub

The Philharmonic

36 Hope Street, Liverpool L1 9BX

One of Liverpool’s most well-known bars is The Philharmonic, also referred to as The Phil.

Paul McCartney and James Corden performed there on The Late Late Show in recent years.

It has lovely rooms with wood panelling, stained glass windows, and dramatic plasterwork. It was constructed in the early 1900s for the Robert Cains brewery.

The Philharmonic’s Dining Rooms are rumoured to be a hotspot for ghosts.

Many customers at the Liverpool pub claim to have seen an apparition of a clown wandering around.

The Slaughter House

13-15 Fenwick Street, Liverpool L2 7LS

The Slaughter House, haunted Liverpool pub

The Slaughter House got its name because it used to be near a slaughterhouse. People who worked there would come to the pub for a drink.

Built in the 1600s, the building on Fenwick Street has been a pub since the early 1800s.

The Slaughter House is said to be haunted because a young child was killed in the basement, and people who have been there say they have seen a shadowy figure staring at them.

In 2017, the TV show “TV’s Most Haunted” went to the pub and found that this dark figure was a man named Albert. According to host Yvette Fielding, Albert “looked after horses” and may have been pushed down The Slaughter House stairs.

Ye Old Hole In Ye Wall

4 Hackins Hey, Liverpool L2 2AW

Ye Hole in Ye Wall, on Hackins Hey, has been there since 1726 and is Liverpool’s oldest pub.

Built on an old Quaker cemetery, the Ye Old Hole In Ye Wall has long been surrounded with supernatural activity.

People who work and go to the bar say they have seen some strange things, like a scary figure in a long wax jacket hanging out in the bar.

There’s also been a sighting of a ghostly Spanish sailor, from thethe 18th century, who was stabbed in the pub for not taking the King’s shilling.

Old Post Office

17 Old Post Office Place, Liverpool L1 3DH

Old Post Office has been known for a long time as a place where strange things happen. One of the rooms upstairs at The Old Post Office is said to still be haunted by a “nameless terror” that can drive a person insane.

In 1902, a man from Staffordshire named Thomas Henshaw and his wife Annie ran this small inner city Liverpool pub. When the Henshaws took over the boozer, they found a small room on the second floor that was locked and the keyhole was blocked with putty.

It was said that the room should never be opened because it held a scary spirit. But an old friend of Mrs. Henshaw’s, who was staying at the pub one night, unlocked the door and peered in. No one know what he saw, but it is said to have “turned his mind” and left him foaming at the mouth.

Peter Kavanagh’s

2-6 Egerton St, Liverpool L8 7LY

Peter Kavanagh's

Peter Kavanagh’s is one of Liverpool’s oldest and most popular pubs. It is located in the Georgian Quarter.

Around 1844, a séance was held in the building, and a ghost named Marmaduke is said to have broken the circle and run away. It is thought that this spectre still haunts Peter Kavanagh’s.

People have said, “Marmaduke came out of hiding and did some sort of ventriloquist act, using drinkers and staff as mouthpieces for his shocking language and strange songs.”

The Cambridge Pub

51-53 Mulberry Street, Liverpool L7 7EE

Locals believe that two scary ghosts dwell in the Cambridge Pub on Mulberry Street, Liverpool.

In the 1970s, one of the ghosts was thought to be the ghost of a woman who didn’t like men and would scratch their cheeks at the pub.

No one seems to knows who she was during her lifetime, but a medium said the vicious phantom is the ghost of a woman whose lover left her at the pub in the 1930s and never came back.

The other ghost is called the “Subterranean Scotsman.” He is said to be a ghost in a kilt who walks through a tunnel near the pub while playing the bagpipes. If you hear him, it means bad news is coming.

Britannia Adelphi Hotel

Ranelagh Street, Liverpool L3 5UL

Britannia Adelphi Hotel

The Britannia Adelphi Hotel and Spa in Livepool’s city centre is said to be one of the most haunted places in England.

Raymond Brown, a pageboy, died in an accident in 1961 when he got stuck in the lift. His ghost is still seen around the building.

George, who killed himself in 1931, is also seen by ghosts.

People who stayed at the Grade II hotel said they saw ghosts in naval uniforms.

Staff said they saw a person hanging out of a window in the Crosby Room, only to find that the room was empty and the window was locked.

Some guests say they felt like they were being watched, and there are rumours that a ghostly figure can be seen on the third floor.
