The technical naval architect plans are the creation of Joe Fole. In 1989 she was formally launched to accolade in San Diego Ca and following sea trials and final completion was afterwards passed on to the owner. Knight & Carver completed their new build motor yacht in the United States. The main hull was constructed with composite. But Montgomery County prosecutors disputed that, saying Maurice Byrd Jr., 41, had a clear intent to harm Steven Strassburg on June 8 after Strassburg, who is white, called him a racial slur. “The victim’s words were absolutely offensive and horrible,” Assistant District Attorney Samantha Cauffman said at Byrd’s preliminary hearing. “But that doesn’t give anyone the reason or justification to kill someone.” Relatives of the two men said Thursday that they had a history of altercations, and that the police had been called to intervene before. Byrd’s attorney, James Lyons, implored District Judge Todd Stephens to dismiss the first-degree murder charge his client faces. “His actions were justified. He was under attack,” Lyons said, adding that his client is a disabled Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. “He was not in a position to get into a physical altercation with someone like that who was totally out of control.” But Stephens was not swayed, and held the case over for a county judge. Investigators were called to Razor Reese’s Salon, Byrd’s business on North York Road, about 6 p.m. on the day of the shooting. Hatboro Police Sgt. Brett Paul testified Thursday that when he arrived, Strassburg, 37, was lying on his back with gunshot wounds to his cheek and back. A card from his family and jar of candy bars, an early present for his June 11 birthday, were found near his body. Strassburg was taken to Jefferson Abington Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead. Byrd was also at the scene and was cooperative with Paul, admitting to the shooting and showing him where he had left his 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun, according to testimony. In a 911 call played during Thursday’s hearing, Byrd is heard telling a dispatcher that Strassburg “verbally assaulted” him and called him a “dirty N—” during an argument outside his shop. He asked the dispatcher to send an officer to come intervene. Despite warnings from the dispatcher to stay away from Strassburg, Byrd walked back outside while on the call, according to evidence presented during the hearing. Strassburg can be heard saying “What are you gonna do? Are you gonna shoot me, N—?” In response, a series of gunshots are heard in quick succession, and Byrd tells the dispatcher he “just had to shoot him.” Surveillance video from a nearby nail salon captured portions of the shooting, showing Strassburg chasing Byrd, and then Byrd firing at him as he walks backward toward his salon. Cauffman, the prosecutor, said that another video, from a camera within Byrd’s shop, recorded him telling Strassburg to “come inside,” during the argument before the 911 call. He also said, to himself, that he was going to shoot Strassburg, according to the prosecutor. Those actions, Cauffman said, were an attempt to lure Strassburg into a conflict and clashed with his self-defense claim — Byrd could have stayed in his shop and waited for police to arrive, following the instructions from the 911 dispatcher, she said. “His actions show his intent in this interaction,” she said. “He had a gun and he wanted to use it.” Strassburg’s cousin, Lauren Wicker, said after Thursday’s hearing that he had told his family he was afraid of Byrd, and that Byrd had left threatening notes for him on his front door. The two men had argued in the past over a parking spot in the lot next to the salon, according to Wicker. Before the shooting, Strassburg told his loved ones that he wanted to move out of the apartment, Wicker said. She said he had called the police in the past, but that he felt nothing had been done to address his concerns. Hatboro police had responded to three verbal disputes between Byrd and Strassburg since December 2022, according to court documents, and had issued warnings to the men to avoid contact with each other. “From what I see, this is two stubborn men who wouldn’t back down and negotiate,” Wicker said. “For this to happen over a parking spot was ridiculous.” Byrd’s father, Maurice Byrd Sr., said that his son is a nonviolent person and a hardworking business owner. “We are sorry that someone has lost his life, and we are here to support Maurice,” he said. It was reported on Monday that the former Carolina Panthers general manager is being hired by the Washington Commanders to serve as a personnel executive. The Commanders’ are hiring former Panthers GM Scott Fitterer as a personnel executive, sources tell @TheAthletic . Part of the Seahawks FO from 2001-2020 before joining Carolina (2021-23), Fitterer joins the Commanders’ revamped FO under GM Adam Peters. https://t.co/xwO57wV7bi — Ben Standig (@BenStandig) July 15, 2024 Fitterer was the Panthers GM from 2021-2023 — a stretch where Carolina went just 14-37 and failed to make the playoffs — before being fired on Jan. 8. The firing could be a blessing in disguise, however, as Panthers owner David Tepper had a notorious reputation as one of the worst at his job in the NFL and all of professional sports. Soon after Tepper let go of head coach Frank Reich, it was reported that the owner's habit of firing lead men in the early part of their tenure with the franchise caused some candidates to remove themselves from the search process during the 2023 offseason. Tepper also fired assistant head coach/running backs coach Duce Staley and quarterbacks coach Josh McCown shortly after saying goodbye to Reich. Fitterer now gets a chance in a less prominent role to show that his lack of production in Carolina was, perhaps, impacted by his boss. Fitterer was part of the Seattle Seahawks front office from 2001-2020 before joining the Panthers, being a part of three Super Bowl runs, including a championship at the end of the 2013 season. The 50-year-old seems to be joining a significantly better situation than he was in Carolina as well. While Washington hasn't been to the postseason since January 2021 and hasn't won a playoff game in 18 years, it will enter 2024 with high hopes after drafting 2023 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick. The Commanders also bring back one-time Pro Bowler Terry McLaurin and 2022 16th overall pick Jahan Dotson to lead the wide receivers room, promising 25-year-old running back Brian Robinson Jr. and added former Los Angeles Chargers star Austin Ekeler to help lead the rushing attack. Washington brought in nine-time Pro Bowl linebacker Bobby Wagner and former Panthers star safety Jeremy Chinn to join the likes of Pro Bowl defensive tackles Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen on the other side of the ball. Off the field, Washington hired Adam Peters to be the next GM in January and added former Detroit Lions executive Lance Newmark as Peters' assistant. News Release US Department of Labor files complaint, seeks contempt order after owner of 8 Indianapolis home healthcare companies defies court, continues violationsINDIANAPOLIS – Despite a 2022 federal court judgment requiring him to pay his employees overtime, Tim Paul — owner of eight Indianapolis-area healthcare services companies — continues to use improper pay practices, the U.S. Department of Labor alleges in its request that a federal court hold the employer in contempt for ignoring the 2022 decision. In addition to the asking the court to hold Paul and his companies — TPS Caregiving LLC, doing business as Comfort Keepers Home Care and Heal at Home LLC — in contempt, the department alleges ongoing overtime violations in its complaint. Currently, the department’s Wage and Hour Division estimates more than 700 employees of Paul’s companies from April 2020 to date may have been shortchanged by these practices. It’s unclear how many employees have been denied their full wages. Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana in Indianapolis on July 10, 2024, the department’s complaint states the division found Tim Paul manipulated regular pay rates of employees who worked more than 40 hours in a workweek to pay them the equivalent of straight-time rates for all hours worked. The complaint alleges Paul’s efforts to avoid paying required overtime wages began the day after the previous investigative period ended. “The Department of Labor has asked the U.S. District Court to hold Tim Paul and his companies in contempt for violating the 2022 consent judgment he signed,” explained Regional Solicitor of Labor Christine Heri in Chicago. “When employers violate the FLSA’s pay requirements after resolving a case through a consent judgment, the department will seek to hold them accountable in court.” The division examined records at TPS Medical Holdings LLC of Indianapolis, which provides management and payroll services for the other companies and home healthcare agencies, TPS Caregiving LLC – operating as Comfort Keepers Home Care, Heal at Home LLC and TPS Medical Holdings LLC – in Indianapolis, and Healing Hands Home Health LLC and Healing Hands Personal Services Agency LLC in Anderson. Investigators also reviewed records at three now closed home health agencies Paul operated. These are Healing Hands Outpatient Therapy and Rehabilitation Center LLC, which operated in Anderson from April 12, 2020 through Dec. 31, 2021; Community Integration Support Services LLC, which operated from April 12, 2020 through June 1, 2021; and Tranquility Nursing and Rehab LLC, which operated from April 12, 2020 through Oct. 15, 2021, in Indianapolis. While the contempt petition only relates to Paul, TPS Caregiving LLC operating as Comfort Keepers Home Care, and Heal at Home LLC, the complaint alleges violations by them and all of the other companies the division examined. In addition to its request for a contempt finding, the department has asked the court to require Paul and his companies to hire, at their expense, a third-party accountant to calculate the exact back wages due to the extremely large volume of pay records involved. Investigators specifically found the employers failed to pay overtime when they did the following:
In 2021, the division investigated Comfort Keepers, Heal at Home and Tim Paul for violations from April 30, 2019, through April 11, 2020. The department’s Office of the Solicitor obtained a consent judgment in January 2022 that prohibited future violations. “The Department of Labor will always fight to protect workers’ rights and hold employers accountable for violating federal law,” explained Wage and Hour Division District Director Aaron Loomis in Indianapolis. “We are determined to recover the wages rightfully earned by the workers employed by Tim Paul and his companies.” Trial attorneys Haley Jenkins and Adam Lubow are litigating the case on behalf of the department’s Office of the Solicitor. In fiscal year 2023, the Wage and Hour Division recovered more than $31.7 million in back wages for workers in the healthcare industry nationwide and $ 192,929 for workers in Indiana . An eastern Pennsylvania brewery is closing this summer. “Friends, it is with a sad and heavy heart that we must make an announcement that has recently become all too common in the craft brewing industry: After over 8 1/2 years, Mad Princes Brewing will be ceasing operations,” it posted on Facebook. Owners Jim and Kurt Ludwig said the Doylestown, Bucks County brewery will likely close by the end of July or early August. “It depends on how long the beer holds out and other factors,” they said. They didn’t share a reason for the closing, but referenced the pandemic’s impact on business: “To paraphrase the great Stoic Philosopher, John ‘no IPAs’ Rambo - ‘Mad Princes got themselves killed in COVID, and they didn’t even know it...’” The owners said they will miss being a part of the Bucks County brewing community, participating in local beer festivals and events and being part of the Bucks County Ale Trail. “But most of all, you, our customers. Without you, we would not have been able to share this hectic and rewarding journey together,” they said. Mad Princes brews various beer styles including pale ales, stouts and Kolsch to lesser-known Eisbier and Berliner Weisse. As a goodbye, the brewery will release a final beer, the last sixtel of the 2022 “St. Lazarus Lemming” Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Barleywine. ![]() How a yacht buyer turned into a shipyard owner: in conversation with the new face of Silent-YachtsItalian electric yacht manufacturer Silent-Yachts is under new ownership after it was liquidated earlier in 2024. Katia Damborsky catches up with the new owner to see what the future has in store… In early 2023, a client arrived at Silent-Yachts in Fano, on Italy’s eastern coast, expecting to take delivery of his new 19.2-metre Silent 62. He had shuttered his life in the States and was preparing to start living on board his new boat – but to his surprise, the vessel wasn’t even close to completion. In the months following, it became clear that the yard was in trouble. The client, German-American lawyer and investor Michael Said, ended up stepping up to pull the yard from the brink of insolvency, purchasing it back from the liquidators who dissolved the business. With several of his business associates at the helm to assist in the management of the newly structured Silent-Yachts, we discover what's next for the yard... How did you end up saving Silent? When it became clear the yard was having trouble, I decided to bankroll the company for a while. When it was officially declared bankrupt, it was the most obvious solution for me to step up and take over. It was a smooth transition. I don’t know of any other insolvency case where liquidation was declared one day, and the next day all the employees and suppliers are paid. There were no bumps in the road. What’s your background? I was an immigration and criminal attorney working in Iowa. I was an immigrant myself and I went through the system, and I thought “Oh God, even with all of my degrees and languages and experience, I’m having all these problems”. How does somebody who doesn’t read or understand English get through this? Immigration is my specialty but I have always been attracted to law. I always wanted to be a lawyer, right from when I was a kid. However, it’s a 24/7 job and I don’t practice anymore. I suppose Silent is the next big project for you? I have big plans for Silent. How quickly they will realise, we’ll see. I think what we have here is too small and I would like be closer to the water. We'd like to expand my production, build up to 120 feet. There are also plans for a 160, but it’s just plans right now. To do all this we need a bigger facility. So you’re in it for the long run at Silent? I always laugh and shake my head when people say I’m going to just build my boat and then drop everything [at Silent]. These [critics] don’t know me, they’ve never spoken to me. I’m like, “you think I’ve spent all this money just to build my boat”? That would make it very expensive. Why do you think you’re in the best position to help Silent restart? Wherever I was in life, I was lucky to be surrounded by people who I could trust and people who knew what they were doing. That doesn't necessarily mean I know what I'm doing all the time. So often I see people, especially people with education and human intelligence, who are unable to admit they don’t know the answer or have the solution. It’s impossible to know everything. But I can always find the right person who will know. Why do you think Silent had all of these problems in the first place? I was a customer, so I can tell you it was not efficient and had some management issues. All of those people responsible are no longer with the business anymore. I don’t blame anyone who’s still here for [the shortcomings under previous management]. Can you tell me about your family background? My dad is from Algeria. He was one of the first foreigners after the war in Germany to get a degree in geophysics. While he was in Algeria he helped establish the Algerian Oil Company, which at the time was a huge company. Then he went on to be a director at OPEC [The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries]. What does your dad think about you going into green technology? He's 100 per cent behind me. My father was a believer in electric in the 80s, when he was head of an oil company. He always said that oil is a finite resource and we need to think about what's going to happen down the road and start the transition now, we can't wait until there's no more oil. As reserves get smaller, [oil] will be the price of wars, people would kill over the last drop of oil. But he believed that if we plan ahead, the transition can be a smooth one. What’s the big change you’d like to see in Silent-Yachts in five years’ time? I would like to see an advance, and I think we will see an advance, in batteries, because I would like to see an increase in the range. My dream would be to get rid of the generator. I have a company and it is involved in R&D in different areas, and these different areas will involve Silent projects in the future. I'm spending some money [in this area] because I want to come up with powertrain batteries for the next generation. What about on the product side? We're trying right now to use as many green materials as much as possible. You have to remember I inherited [Silent] four months ago. But in those four months, we have slowly started to increase our use of green material and recycled materials in the building of the boats. I want to see how much more can we replace and exchange [traditional] materials for more eco-conscious ones. What’s your biggest dream for Silent? You know, very few boats can go to places like the Galapagos, because the restrictions are tight and most boats pollute the water. [Silent yachts] don't pollute the water, except if we use the generator. But then the other big problem is the blackwater. All of these restricted areas, lakes even, where motor boats are not allowed because of the pollution. Why not use one of mine? But in order to do that, you have to be able to take care of the blackwater. How will you stay ahead of the market? We have a large portion of the market and I want to maintain that. The only way to do that is to put some money in R&D. What I’ve seen over and over again is that companies have great ideas, they get off the ground and then they forget to put money into R&D. They just coast along. They forget to invest in R&D and they don’t remember that’s how they ended up in the strong position in the first place.
