Elena captures the grace of bygone eras, providing total exhilaration and utter relaxation in equal measure. Her sumptuous interior is fit for the Admiral of the Fleet. Polished hardwood paneling hides sailing tomes, bottles of claret and flagons of navy rum. Her endless wooden deck is the place to plan new adventures - or to acknowledge admiring glances from other yachts.

Launched in 2014, luxury motor yacht ELENA (Project Margarita, hull 16847) is an elegant classic contemporary 47-metre steel displacement vessel, built by the leading Dutch shipyard, Heesen Yachts. Superyacht ELENA boasts both naval architecture as well as sophisticated exterior design by Omega Architects. The hull of the vessel is a paragon of efficiency, with a bulbous bow and sleek lines, resulting in a yacht that requires the least amount of power to reach a particular speed.

The lovely schooner ELENA was built in 2009, using the original designs penned by Nathaniel Herreshoff in 1910. Her original sister-ship held the record for the transatlantic race in 1928 – this is a sprightly yacht, a true super-sailer. Wide uncluttered decks offer endless opportunities for lazing in the sun or dining beneath the stairs. Below decks, she has been lovingly recreated with rich mahogany panelling and deep red leathers: the full-beam main saloon is a relaxing spot for sitting and chatting or enjoying fine dining. Any signs of modern life have been artfully concealed beneath her authentic fittings – but she does benefit from modern communications and air-conditioning. The four guest cabins are half-panelled in mahogany – the rest is painted white, making them feel bright and airy. This is a true classic yacht, a regular on the regatta circuit and a dream for sailing enthusiasts who long to experience the golden age of sail. ELENA can provide a real get away from it all charter: enjoy the peace of skimming along under wind power alone, finish that book you’ve been meaning to read, spend hours simply gazing at the ocean or billowing sails. The elegant ELENA was lovingly and meticulously built in 2009 to the original designs of the racing schooner of the same name that participated in record-breaking style in the 1928 King’s Cup Trans-Atlantic Race from New York to Santander.  

Using the original 1910 drawings by designer Nathaniel G Herreshoff , Factoria Naval de Marin has resurrected this new 55m ultra-luxurious ELENA; featuring modern comforts such as an iPod docking station, Wi-Fi and televisions, whilst maintaining the classical ornate interiors reminiscent of a period country home.  

She has an expansive deck, perfect for relaxing or entertaining.   ELENA was fitted with a new boom, sail plan and bowsprit in 2012, based on the original 1911 sail plan.   She has an expansive deck, perfect for relaxing or entertaining.

Interior Design & Engineering

The ELENA sailing yacht is an exact replica of the 1910 schooner. Built to the same Herreshof design, she was launched in 2009 and boasts the same race-winning DNA as her namesake.

Her exterior features an elegantly tapered steel hull, towering pine spars, spruce masts, and over 1,0000 square meters of Spectra sails.

Step inside the ELENA yacht and her Steve McLaren-designed interior will transport you back to the 1910s. Despite her classic styling, which features plenty of polished hardwood panelling and vintage-looking furnishings, she’s got all the modern comforts you’d expect from a luxury superyacht, including onboard WiFi.

Your ELENA yacht charter can accommodate eight guests in four cabins. The master suite comes with a desk and comfy seating area, while the rest of the accommodation comprises one double and two twins. The Captain’s cabin can also be used for an additional two guests if needed.

Yacht Facilities & Entertainment

Following in the footsteps of her predecessor, the ELENA yacht has already won regattas on both sides of the Atlantic. If you want to put her through her paces at a regatta, you can join the racing team and compete.

When you’re not racing, you might find yourself on her expansive open deck. A dining table can be set up to offer a space for alfresco dining at any time of day, and you’ll find plenty of sun pads if you want to stretch out and top up your tan.

Toys and Crew

A crew of eight will help you enjoy every moment of your ELENA yacht charter.

The toy collection on board will keep you entertained for hours. You could take one of the kayaks out for a morning paddle or get the blood pumping with a spot of kite surfing or waterskiing. If you want to head out fishing or enjoy a snorkelling excursion, you can grab your gear and set off on one of the two tenders available.

She was completed by the well-known ship builder Perama, Greece in 1992. A succesful refit was delivered in 2008/2016. The spacious yacht layout features 6 cozy cabins and comfortably accommodates a group of 13 guests.

CAPTAIN: DIMITRIS HANTAKIAS AGE:33 Dimitris graduated from the Merchant Marine School of Preveza in 2019. He spent his initial years working on oil tankers. He is a holder of numerous certificates such as shipboard safety certificate , First aid and Fire Fighting, Speed Boat operators License. He joined M/Y Elena’s team in early 2024. One of his many qualities is his calm nature and willingness to learn new things. Dimitris is a fluent English speaker and his hobbies are water sports , football and travelling among others. MECHANIC: GIORGOS PAPADOPOULOS AGE: 42 Giorgos has been the mechanic on board M/Y Elena for the last 11 years. He has a very wide knowledge of all technical issues and keeps the yacht very well maintained. Giorgos is also the one who will drive the tender when the clients want to waterski or ride on the tubes. Giorgos has a sweet character and a good sense of humour but is always thorough with his work. In his free time he likes going sailing and looking after his olives and vines. YACHT OPERATION MANAGER : APOSTOLIS PAPADOPOULOS AGE: 69 Captain “Tolis” as he is known, graduated from the Greek Marine Academy and also from the Nautical College of Southampton England. In his early carrier he worked on Greek flagged tanker ships all over the world. In 1992 he took the post of Captain of M/Y Elena and has been part of the team since then. He now holds the place of Yacht Operations Manager and he makes sure that everything runs smoothly on-board ensuring guests satisfaction. His vast knowledge and experience of the Greek waters enables him to suggest the best places for the passengers to visit, picking out small coves and nice swim areas for them. He is the “organizer” of MY Elena and makes sure that everything goes to plan. He speaks English and has a very warm and friendly character. He likes to spend his free time in his village with his two dogs tending to his olives and reading history books . COOK: KYRIAKOS KAROUSIS AGE: 62 Kyriakos has graduated from the Athenian Cook school and has acquired a vast experience as a cook during his career. Before joining M/Y Elena he worked as a chef in 5 star hotels in Athens, later on he joined the yachting industry adding many years of cooking on yachts. Whereas during the winter months he works as a private cook in villas. Kyriakos joined M/Y Elena in 2019 and has been the cook on board this yacht since. He specializes in Greek cuisine and keeps his guests extremely happy with offering them all kinds of Greek specialties. HOSTESS: FOTINI SALAMOURA AGE:34 Fotini studied economics , however she always enjoyed working in the tourism industry and this is the path she followed. Fotini previously worked in the hotel industry where she was in charge of clients service, tablescapping and waitressing. She joined M/Y Elena's crew in early 2024. Fotini has a very welcoming manner and is always there to cater to her guests. She has a warm smile and a vibrant personality. She speaks English and in her free time she enjoys travelling , reading and trekking. DECKHAND: JIMMY SEVITS AGE: 44 Jimmy has worked as a deckhand on M/Y Elena since 2020 . He is the top guy to “pull on the ropes” and keep the yacht ready for the clients. Jimmy is always there to greet the guests with a warm smile and assist wherever is needed.

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). Crew is one of the largest expenses on a superyacht and critical to the owner’s enjoyment of their vessel. As the largest crew agency in the world, we know crew. Our cost calculator contains customized crew lists for yachts ranging from 80ft to 600ft with salary information based on our reference verified salary data.

Our users also have the ability to completely tailor the crew list to the specific needs, schedule and requirements of their vessel. Each yacht is unique and may have specific owner requests in addition to the yacht’s safe manning requirements.

Management of the supplemental crew costs and strategic budgeting can help avoid significant overspend on categories such as food and uniform. This tool contains default values based on our industry expertise and recommended budget for an efficiently and safely run superyacht.

Our yacht operating cost calculator is now on it’s third major revision. We start with actual yacht expense data from our yacht management accountants and then generate formulas to extrapolate out the budget for a wide range of yachts. We have been providing accounting services to large yachts for the past 18 years.

Our operating cost calculator is tuned for yachts from 80 to 600 feet. We find operating variables create the largest variances for yachts smaller than 100 feet and larger than 250 feet. We have tested the numbers the most in the range from 100 to 250 feet.

Our budget calculator factors in the fuel burn for a range of engine sizes typically seen installed on yachts by length. By dragging the green “fuel dockage” slider to the right you will increase the projected fuel burn rate and therefore the budget cost for fuel. Our default position would be for a typical displacement fuel burn. Position the slider in the 60-80% range for fuel projections for planning hulls.

Our default values produce a budget number that we believe is generous to run a yacht to a high standard. Perfect is a very expensive word to use in the yachting industry where standards are already high. Moving the crew and maintenance sliders to 80% will provide an “industry best” quality of crew and give them the maintenance budget to operate to a very high standard. If you need to go over the 80% area then you may have unusually labor intensive equipment on the yacht.

Yes, our yacht operating cost calculator can output a budget suitable for this situation. Adjust the owner use to 2 (minimum value), owner slider to 0, crew slider to 10%, Administration to 10%, Fuel and Dockage to 0, Maintenance to 10% and then Capital Repairs to 0. This will remove all of the large charges associated with owner use and vessel movement but leave the essential base maintenance and insurance in place.

Lift on and float in yacht transport is a popular way to transport yachts across large ocean passage. The yachts that this service certainly applies to are ones that may not have the motoring range or structural integrity for blue ocean cruising. The cost of transporting a yacht twice per year is put into our budget once the “Fuel Dockage” slider hits 75%. If your yacht has the range we recommend self-sufficient ocean passages whenever possible. Whilst the transport companies sell their services based upon reportedly well oiled operated schedules the reality is that your yacht may stay waiting for pickup for a week or more with no compensation due. When factoring in all secondary factors of self-sufficient passages (increased fuel, maintenance, potential storm damage, crew time off, extra delivery crew) compared with transporting your yacht (insurance, potential loading / unloading damage, loss of schedule control, no work whilst underway, crew flights, crew accommodation) we believe that there is a 100% premium associated with float in transport and a 75% premium with lift on transport compared with self-powered.

Abandoned yachts crash in value. We recommend that even if you are trying to sell your yacht that you use the yacht for a minimum of two weeks per year so that systems are tested and working every six months. There is nothing worse for a yacht than not being used. If you truly are not going to use the yacht then you should sell it immediately for the first genuine offer as every dollar you put into maintenance will not be recovered at the time of the sale.

We did not build this version with sailing yachts in mind. Early in our development of this version we decided to exclude sailing yachts as a few of the major cost drivers scale very differently for sailing yachts compared with motor yachts. For example: To calculate paint costs we reviewed the surface area of over 100 large yachts and created a formula for painted surface area to length. Sailing yachts just don’t scale in a consistent way. Similarly crew numbers don’t scale in the same manner that they do for motor yachts. If there is sufficient demand we may build a sailing selector switch into a future version of this tool.

We hate to hear when yacht owners were told by their broker to factor in 10% of the purchase price to operate the yacht. This over used saying is sadly right occasionally (particularly for newer yachts in the $20-30M range)… but just because a broken watch tells the right time twice a day you shouldn’t rely upon it to tell the time. As yachts get older their capital value decreases but their maintenance costs increase. There is no way that a fixed 10% of purchase cost rule can be true… if your broker told you this rule then you need a new yacht broker… we know some good ones. 😊

SCOTUS Justice Elena Kagan calls for ethics enforcement mechanism

A day after President Biden used an Oval Office address to promise Supreme Court reform, liberal Justice Elena Kagan urged ethics reforms, with a concrete enforcement mechanism.

At the Ninth Circuit Court’s annual judicial conference in Sacramento, California, the Justice answered a question on the difficulties of enforcing an ethics code, especially in deciding who to task with such a responsibility.

“I feel as though we, however hard it is, that we could and should try to figure out some mechanism for doing this,” Kagan said, per Bloomberg Law.

Kagan, who once mused whether accepting a care package of bagels would violate ethics laws, said Chief Justice John Roberts ought to consider creating “some sort of committee of highly respected judges with a great deal of experience and a reputation for fairness” to combat the court’s growing image of corruption.

The Supreme Court has faced eroding public confidence following not only a slate of deeply divisive and unprecedented decisions, but also allegations of political extremism and bias, personal conflict, and financial misconduct against Justices.

Justice Clarence Thomas’ lavish yacht trips, generously over-market home sale, and other connections to billionaire benefactors drew attention towards court reforms, a mission that even picked up the support of President Biden.

Kagan, who joined the court in 2010, is one of three liberal justices who spent the year penning blistering dissents as her colleagues torched regulatory power, stripped away rights for unhoused people, and granted presidents near-absolute immunity.

In a separate panel, Kagan also criticized the practice of writing multiple concurring opinions in a case, including Justice Thomas’s concurrence in a Presidential Immunity case creating a novel legal theory against the use of special prosecutors, a rationale used by Judge Aileen Cannon to dismiss a case against Donald Trump.

“It prevents us, I think, from giving the kind of guidance that lower courts have a right to expect, that the public has a right to expect,” Kagan reportedly said.

Kagan also drew attention to the seven separate decisions in United States v. Rahimi, a case from this term which held 8-1 that bans on firearm ownership for domestic abusers were legal.

Phone prices are going up but you’re paying less

For the past few years, the big three mobile carriers in the United States — AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon — have been trying to grab customers by dangling generous promotions on new phones if you pay for a higher-cost unlimited-data plan.

If you’re among the majority of Americans who buy new phones on a monthly plan from the big three companies, you’re typically paying up to hundreds of dollars less than the sticker price for a new iPhone , according to BayStreet Research.

This chart shows that big three wireless customers are now paying an average of one-third off the sticker price for a top-tier iPhone, after counting the trade-in value of an older device, discounts and other goodies.

You’re generally paying less than the list price for other higher-end phone models, too, though promotions are typically heaviest for iPhones.

Are the phone company device discounts worth it? It depends.

Adeeva Fritz with the phone plan comparison site Navi gave the example of two different unlimited data plans from AT&T.

The AT&T Unlimited Starter SL plan costs $65.99 a month for one phone line if you set automatic payments and skip a paper bill. Fritz said that’s the lowest-cost AT&T service plan that qualifies for as much as $1,000 off a new iPhone 15 model if you have a relatively recent smartphone to trade in. You get a monthly credit on your bill over three years for the value of the discount.

Another AT&T unlimited data plan, Value Plus VL , won’t get you a free iPhone but it costs $50.99 for one phone line. Over the same three years, your phone service is $1,836, or $540 less than the more expensive AT&T plan

If you want a new iPhone, have a relatively recent phone to trade in and don’t mind being committed to your phone company for three years, the higher-priced plan might be worth it.

If you tend to hold onto your smartphones for more than three years, don’t have a high-value phone to trade in and don’t want to be tethered to your phone company, you might be better off with a cheaper cellphone plan that has smaller or no device discounts.

Focus on the phone plan

Fritz’s example helps show two things: First, phone service is probably the largest cost of owning a smartphone. Even a top-tier $1,200 iPhone may be far less than the thousands of dollars you’re paying for phone service over a few years.

And two, it’s mind-numbing to figure out the phone plan that will make you happiest and save money. The number of people in your household, your data use and your phone preferences can dramatically alter your math.

That’s where Navi can help. Telecom analyst Craig Moffett of MoffettNathanson Research recommended the comparison site.

Enter details of your current phone plan , and Navi will walk you through the pros, cons and costs of alternatives, including other options from your current provider. If you want a new phone, Navi will assess the price you might pay at multiple phone companies.

You may have to do more research on your own, including for smaller phone providers like Consumer Cellular . It and many other smaller mobile providers, including the cable and internet providers Xfinity and Spectrum, use the same mobile networks as the big three. Your mobile internet speeds might slow down if networks are congested, though.

The hassle of mobile plan sleuthing could pay off. A survey of Consumer Reports members found that the majority of them who changed phone service in the prior year saved money — some more than $40 a month — and generally got better service.
