Luxury yachts with helipads

A luxury yacht with a helipad offers complete flexibility. The convenience of owning a yacht with a fully certified helipad can not only increase your time on board but also provides a way to explore uncharted territory and enjoy a yachting experience at its finest.

When you own or charter a yacht with a helipad, you can fly to your boat, saving considerable time and the potential stress that comes with taking multiple forms of transport. It also makes it easy to reach on-land destinations, from remote terrain to the world’s most elegant cities.

Helipads are generally positioned on the bow of a luxury boat or the aft deck, with careful planning to ensure health and safety regulations are met and that they don’t take up valuable guest space.

From touch-and-go helipads to full-scale helicopter hangars and commercially compliant helipads, here’s what you need to know about buying or chartering a superyacht with a helipad.

Yacht Sales FAQ

What are the benefits of a superyacht with a helipad.

Having a helipad on board a superyacht is a highly desirable feature, especially with charter guests seeking an elevated experience at sea. There are several benefits, including convenience, easy access, privacy, and enhanced peace of mind in the event of an emergency.

Fast & private transportation

The primary benefit of a helipad on a yacht is that it allows for fast and private transportation of guests to and from the boat, avoiding lengthy tender rides and allowing guests to explore their surroundings further.

Ideal for extreme sports

A helipad can also be used for extreme sports, such as helicopter water skiing and heli-skiing, ensuring an incredible experience on the water.

Peace of mind

Having a fully certified helipad also provides enhanced peace of mind. Should there be, for example, a medical emergency, you have complete peace of mind that a swift transfer to a land-based medical centre can be quickly arranged.

Maximise a yacht's potential

A mega yacht with a fully certified helipad is highly desirable and will typically attract a higher resale value. Additionally, yachts with helipads are particularly sought-after charter yachts, enabling owners to maximise their boat’s income potential. Finally, a yacht's helipad can also be repurposed, and the large deck space cleared for a variety of activities, such as a dance floor at night and a recreational space during the day.

How big does a yacht have to be to have a helipad?

Generally speaking, a yacht must be at least 40-metres to accommodate a helipad on the bow. Boats under 40-metres generally do not have space to have a helipad on the bow, but clever design means that it may be possible to accommodate a touch-and-go helipad on the stern.

What is a touch-and-go helipad?

A touch-and-go helipad is a type of landing pad for helicopters that allows for quick take-offs and landings without stowing the aircraft on the yacht. It is becoming increasingly common on luxury superyachts and can be a significant bonus for yacht charterers, providing a quick and convenient way to access the vessel. Having a touch-and-go helipad on a yacht can also increase a boat's resale value and charter potential.

Can a yacht have more than one helipad?

Yes, it is possible to have more than one helipad on a yacht, depending on its size and layout. Multiple helicopter decks are often found on the world's largest mega yachts and expedition vessels, allowing for multiple helicopters to be stored at the same time. Having two helipads or more can be especially useful for vessels that accommodate a large number of guests or crew members who may need to travel to different locations at the same time.

What other amenities will a yacht with a helicopter deck have?

As helicopter decks are typically found on larger vessels, you'll also benefit from an enhanced selection of amenities. The world's finest superyachts typically boast voluminous beach clubs, swimming pools, spa facilities, cinema rooms, fully equipped gyms, VIP suites, and spacious salons and deck areas. They also typically boast a garage filled with tenders and a fantastic selection of water toys, including jet skis, water skis, inflatables, diving equipment, kayaks, submarines, and more.

SEA BULL 65 m heli hangar

' title=

SEA BULL 65m -4

Sea bull 65m -5, sea bull 65m -6, sea bull 65m -1, sea bull 65m -2, sea bull 65m -3, ga 65m sea bull, heli, the sea bull 65m is designed to host a helicopter in its own helicopter hangar.

Introduction

This new project design is coming from a general other direction as normally projects are getting designed.

Our designers collected all innovate ideas and features owners ask for on yachts in the past on a certain length category and started with the most difficult task to integrate a helicopter hangar into a +60m yacht by not losing the general operation, quality and lifestyle on a yacht.

According to the motto “simplify to the max”, NEDSHIP is offering a solution for owners with a very flexible option list, so the owner can chose exactly the configuration he likes for his personal lifestyle and environment.

Not every owner needs a helicopter hangar or a sub-marine , they like more the spacious salons or additional room features.

Once we do not need a helicopter hangar, the owner suite, the salon on the main deck, the pool area as well as the garage will benefit on this additional space. And even with helicopter hangar it is more than spacious, compare to other yachts this size and style.

The wish list we worked on and which we integrated into the design is amazing:

The NEDSHIP “SEA BULL” 65m offers at high sea in open Ocean conditions a much saver stability than the most advanced multi hulls on the market.

Based also on Carbon Kevlar structures , designed for the highest possible impact resistance at the best possible lifestyle and environment friendly.

To customize your own yacht based on the general design of the new “SEA BULL” model will give the customized dream yacht each owner would like to have.

And dreams are only on step forward. Talk with us as we love to customize the yacht for to create your swimming luxury island for freedom, silence, social meetings and business.

General design:

  • Sportive but not that extreme appearance, to stay still timeless for the future.
  • 65m LOA with a beam of max 12,4 m

SEAXPLORER SERIES

Whether you choose the 105m, 77m, or 60m version, or a full custom, SeaXplorer is the most capable and efficient luxury expedition yacht ever built.

EYOS EXPERTISE

yacht with helicopter hangar

To help create the ideal globally-capable expedition yacht, EYOS Expeditions took over 150 design criteria to DAMEN shipyard. Working with DAMEN’s design team, EYOS advised on details from the hull form and bridge layout to the tender davits and Zodiac boarding arrangements.

SeaXplorer was the first yacht built to meet the new Polar Code Standards, which came into force in 2017. While her entire hull is ice-strengthened, in the most challenging ice conditions, SeaXplorer can go astern using a specially shaped icebreaking stern to break through boundaries that stop other yachts.

This 575-Foot Superyacht Has Its Own Helicopter Hangar

The hydrogen-powered megayacht features eight decks and a cascading waterfall pool.

yacht with helicopter hangar

If you’re going to name a yacht after a god, it’d better be big. This 575-foot Acionna megayacht, named for a Gallo-Roman water goddess, fits the bill, as it’s even larger than Oceanco’s Aeolus , which derives its title from the Greek god of wind .

The fantastical vessel comes from UK-based designer Andy Waugh, whose Noveau and Epiphany concepts was previously featured on Maxim.com. According to his website , he has completed eight superyacht projects as a lead designer, and two more are currently under construction.

yacht with helicopter hangar

Along with its sheer size, the scale of which is shown in stunningly illustrated renders, the first thing that captures the eye is terraced superstructure. Acionna features eight decks altogether, including a double-height main saloon with panoramic curved glass overlooking the main aft deck pool.

That area leads down to a swimming platform, which Waugh describes as a central “island” of communal areas surrounded by the pool and accessed via a tunnel aft and a bridge. As with Noveau , Acionna ‘s pool flows down across multiple levels, creating a perpetual waterfall that’s both practical and beautiful. Also aboard is a full-size squash court, helicopter hangar and a 66-foot indoor pool.

yacht with helicopter hangar

Despite its massive stature, Acionna is would ideally be a zero-impact vessel. The only problem is that the technology required for its hydrogen-based propulsion system hasn’t been implemented at this scale.

“She is planned to be powered with hydrogen using a similar system currently being trialed in cruise ships and ferries” Waugh’s website reads. “If the power used to manufacture the hydrogen is purchased from renewable energy sources the yacht could be said to be ‘zero impact.’”

yacht with helicopter hangar

“Until vessels like this one are built there will be no way to increase demand for hydrogen thereby breaking the chicken and egg stalemate of supply and demand.”

Steve Kozloff, designer of the 705-foot-long G-Quest , expressed a similar sentiment in presenting the $1 billion concept, envisioning that it would be powered by the “green fuels of the future”—be it hydrogen, methanol or biodiesel.

“The Acionna concept,” Waugh concludes, ” is for those who see themselves as trend setters and game changers, those who appreciate the zenith of luxury but also want to have a positive impact.”

Belonging to the successful Yacht Support range built by DAMEN in partnership with the prestigious Dutch superyacht manufacturer AMELS , the new SEA AXE 6911 yacht support vessel has been recently sold. The robust and highly innovative 69-metre luxury yacht support vessel SEA AXE 6911 represents the first vessel in the Yacht Support range to boast the ultimate technical area for serious superyacht helicopter operations – a fully enclosed hangar beneath the LY3 / MCA fully certified helideck.

The new superyacht support vessel SEA AXE 6911 is currently in build at Damen Shipyards Gorinchem in the Netherlands and due to be delivered in June 2016. The breath-taking SEA AXE 6911 represents the fifth purpose-built Yacht Support vessel to be delivered since DAMEN and AMELS introduced the ground-breaking new concept to the superyacht market in 2009.

Superyacht Support Vessel SEA AXE 6911

Product Director, Mark Vermeulen, from the dedicated Yacht Support team at DAMEN, says the new SEA AXE 6911 superyacht support vessel is an evolution of the 67m SEA AXE 6711 , including the previously delivered GARÇON yacht support vessel  to the 87m Lurssen mega yacht ACE , as well as input from the client.

Mega Yacht Support Vessel SEA AXE 6911

“In fact, the owner’s team came to us with a lot of client-specific customisations for what was then our 67-metre platform,” Mark Vermeulen explains. “They put a lot of thought into how the owner would like to operate the Yacht Support vessel in combination with the mother yacht. This has created new possibilities within the design, resulting in an extremely high-end yachting experience. Now we’ve put a lot of that client feedback into the updated design – the SEA AXE 6911.”

In addition to the helicopter hangar, the extended 69-metre platform also hosts a dedicated helicopter workshop below deck, a well-equipped dive centre, plus 250 square metres of deck space for tenders and toys, as well as 110 square metres of below deck storage. At approximately 1,200 gross tonnes, the 69m mega yacht support vessel SEA AXE 6911 is also large enough to sleep 22 crew and staff, while cruising at 20 knots.

Based on DAMEN’s high-speed SEA AXE patrol and offshore supply vessels, the Yacht Support range is destined for demanding superyacht owners who take these purpose-built vessels all over the world carrying more toys, tenders, personnel, provisions, specialist gear and helicopters. Particularly for destinations with less developed infrastructure, these highly innovative vessels represent new possibilities for luxury yachting experiences and has undoubtedly generated considerable interest.

SEA AXE 6911 yacht support vessel - Helicopter Hangar

SEA AXE 6911 yacht support vessel – Helicopter Hangar

The impressive 85 meters long and 17 meters wide SEA AXE 8517 yacht support vessel has also been developed as a concept design, based on a DAMEN commercial offshore supply vessel platform. At 3,500 gross tonnes, this amazingly large size DAMEN Yacht Support vessel boasts a huge 550 square metre deck and can accommodate all tenders, toys, staff, relief crew, provisions, waste and provide security to the mothership. For 100-metre plus mega yachts it is typical that an Owner travels with a staff of more than 50 persons; naturally they do not have to be on the mothership permanently, hence the Yacht Support vessel is the perfect solution.

Superyacht Helipads on Charter: What You Need to Know

A helipad is the ultimate luxury convenience for anyone in a hurry to start their dream yacht charter vacation, yet although it seems these days every self-respecting superyacht boasts a helipad - or two - few are actually commercially certified for helicopter landings. So, the question remains: is a non-certified helipad just a waste of space on a yacht charter?

To clear things up, we have compiled our guide on everything you need to know about superyacht helipads, as well as some of the best charter yachts already equipped with fully-certified helicopter platforms for those wishing to kick off their luxury yacht charter in style.

Helicopter lands onboard MY Suri

In this article:

A commercially-certified helipad is a must

Can you use a non-certified helipad on a yacht charter, private helipads, ‘touch and go’ helipad, charter guest benefits, 6 stand-out superyachts with a fully-certified helipad, 1. la datcha, 2. cloudbreak, 3. madsummer, 5. flying fox, interested in booking a luxury yacht charter.

For this classification, a superyacht helipad must be constructed and operated in line with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s (MCA) Large Commercial Yacht Code (LY3) Annex 6, which is basically the technical standards for helicopter landing areas, or helipads.

Helipad onboard MY Ragnar

This code sets out the basic rules governing the design, construction and operation of a helipad, which includes important factors such as a yacht’s load bearing capacity, obstacle clearance, consideration of airflow, safe access points, lighting, permanent deck markings and relevant crew training on helicopter operations.

The responsibility for the survey and certification process for a helipad intended for commercial use is shared between the yacht’s registered flag state, the classification society and an aviation inspection body, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization ( ICAO ).

All in all, it doesn’t leave much wiggle room for winging it.

In a nutshell, no.

Helicopters are not permitted to touch down on a non-certified helipad onboard a yacht that is being used commercially, i.e. for charter, unless for a medical emergency such as the evacuation of sick or injured passengers.

yacht with helicopter hangar

A helipad or helideck is considered a commercial operation if used to either;

  • Receive commercial charter helicopters, or
  • Transport charter guests

Therefore, even a yacht being used privately by its owner cannot receive a commercial charter helicopter if the helideck is not certified.

The ICAO have also weighed in on this point, stipulating that “all commercial air transport helicopters should land on certified helipads which must be built according to certain standards”.

Private helipads onboard a yacht adhere to less stringent rules and therefore do not have to meet the commercial standards for certification.

We find many owners are keen to incorporate a helideck, so long as it doesn't compromise the overall aesthetic of the yacht

Aft helipad with sun loungers onboard MY Luna B

That's not to say that non-certified helipads aren’t safe, as for the most part they will have been designed with the regulations in mind. However, more often a yacht’s visual appeal is advocated over the practicalities of helipad design. Chris Wood, a helidecks operations manager with Safeguard Helidecks Certification agrees: “We find many owner's are keen to incorporate a helideck, so long as it doesn't compromise the overall aethestic of the yacht."

This snazzy term has become synonymous with luxury superyachts, although it technically has no meaning. For clarity's sake, unless specified ‘touch and go’ helipads are not certified and therefore cannot be used for commercial operations i.e. yacht charters, with the exception of medical emergencies.

MY O'Ptasia

This can cause some confusion, especially as these types of helipads are often highlighted as a stand-out feature when marketing a yacht for charter.

A certified helipad onboard a yacht is a major bonus for yacht charterers wishing to expedite their travel time and arrive in style. Other advantages include;

  • Quick and easy access to and from the yacht
  • Avoids wasting time in heavy traffic
  • Avoids lengthy tender rides to yachts out on anchor
  • Provides an opportunity for guests to explore their surroundings further
  • Ideal jumping off point for extreme sports such as heli skiing
  • Useful for corporate charter events
  • Safe and comfortable transportation option

We are seeing huge demand from yacht owners wanting to get their private helipads commercially certified for yacht charters

As for non-commercial helipads, it can also be used for medical emergencies.

In conclusion, a fully operational helideck is an increasingly desirable feature onboard a charter yacht, which has led to a growing demand for helipad certification. Chris Woods at Safeguard Helidecks Certification confirms this is one of their biggest growth areas: "We are seeing huge demand from yacht owners wanting to get their private helipads commercially certified for yacht charters".

So, although there are currently only a handful of charter yachts offering certified helipads right now, the future looks bright.

We have hand-picked a selection of top-rated superyachts equipped with a commerical landing platform for the ultimate luxury yacht charter.

Yacht With Helicopter For Sale : A Practical Indulgence

Yacht with Helicopter pad for sale Mi Sueno

There’s no more striking sight in the superyacht world than a helicopter perched on deck anchored in a beautiful setting, and it’s always a thrill to descend on your yacht from the skies, watching the blades churn up the turquoise sea below.

A yacht with a helicopter gives the yacht owner or charterer ultimate freedom to explore, whether you want to go summer skiing via helicopter from your yacht in Alaska, take scenic flights across volcanoes and jungle in the Caribbean, or simply have the convenience of being able to fly to a nearby city for work or pleasure at a moment’s notice.

When you’re holidaying on board a yacht with helicopter, you can begin your charter in superb style by landing on the yacht’s helipad, where the crew will be waiting to greet you. The next morning you might take a breathtaking helicopter ride to a distant island for a glamorous dining and spa experience, or indulge yourself with a helicopter shopping trip along the French Riviera from Monaco to Saint Tropez.

Effortless Cruising, Always in Reach

A yacht with a helicopter means that everything is in easy reach. If business calls from the Hamptons or you fancy a night out in New York, you just step onto your helicopter and fly away, rather than having to organise tender transfers ashore to a nearby airport, or spending the time relocating the yacht to the closest marina.

Yacht with Helicopter pad for sale

A luxury yacht vacation is already considered the most opulent and relaxing way to travel, but by including a helicopter you can vastly increase the area you can travel in a week, and the experiences of the cruising destination. If you’re in Antigua, for instance, but are really craving lunch back at that French restaurant in St Barths you ate at last week, you simply request the helicopter.

The Logistics of a Yacht with Helicopter

Some yachts with helicopters have touch and go helipads located on either the sundeck, boat deck or the foredeck, while larger superyachts and support vessels have designated helicopter hangars to permanently store the helicopter, as well as reserve fuel tanks. Yacht helicopters are crewed by a professional pilot, who may be part of the yacht’s permanent crew, or only come on board when required.

Yacht with Helicopter pad for sale

Yachts with helicopters are particularly popular for remote or long range cruising, as well as with businesspeople who need to remain within reach of major centers and airports for urgent trips.

A yacht with a helicopter not only adds an extra dynamic of adventure and opulence to your charter, but is also extremely practical, allowing you to explore more of the cruising ground while still remaining in easy reach of land. Worth Avenue Yachts has a wide range of yachts with helicopter for sale and charter.

Superyacht helicopter deck design solutions

One of the hot topics in yacht design is the continual updating of something that’s been a feature on superyachts for decades: helipads.

I first encountered one in 1985 with the 36.8 metre motor yacht Buckpasser built at Hitachi-Zosen for an American sportsman. She was one of the earliest yachts to boast a fully functional helicopter landing area . Ogden Phipps used the helicopter in conjunction with his hunting and fishing exploits around the globe, often towing his Merritt sportfishing boat as well.

Even today, Buckpasser remains one of the smallest yachts to incorporate a helideck. The reason is simple: helidecks take a lot of planning, space and money. The sacrifices are often not worth it for a smaller yacht where the trade-offs are proportionally greater. As a yacht grows in size, the costs and compromises become more manageable as part of the overall project.

The approach

There are two approaches to helicopter landing aboard yachts. The first, the ‘touch-and-go’ or emergency landing pad, is a spot for the helicopter to land, never shutting down, and take off as soon as its passengers or cargo have embarked or disembarked. There are no set standards for such operations, with the details governing them worked out on a case-by-case basis between the designers, builders and relevant regulators from civil aviation, classification society, flag state and insurer. Note that this is only for non-commercial operation.

The touch-and-go has no real reference, asserts David Nelson, principal aviation consultant at Helidecks Training Solutions, a yacht helipad design consultancy and MCA-accredited training service. ‘However, the owner of a “private helipad” would be foolish not to have equivalence with the standards. Most classification societies have their own minimum firefighting and rescue equipment to satisfy ISM requirements.’

None of this indicates that every non-certified helipad is unsafe. Many comply with the spirit and requirements of the commercial regulations but miss certain dimensions by centimetres. Such is the case with Feadship Lady Christine , built for a certified helicopter pilot.

The second approach, called fully certified or commercially certified, is a lot more comprehensive. For superyachts flying the Red Ensign or its equivalent, particularly those in charter or that intend to charter, the primary regulations governing their design, construction and operation are found in the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s Large Commercial Yacht Code (LY3) Annex 6.

Acceptable compromise

Between ‘touch-and-go’ and ‘fully compliant’ lies a grey area of compromises for private-use situations that some designers and builders are reluctant to discuss.

‘International aviation regulations mandate that all helicopters engaged in commercial air transport operate to a certified helipad or in this case helideck, which must have been constructed to defined standards and characteristics,’ Nelson says. ‘A private yacht and helicopter owner need not build his helideck to the same standards, nor gain certification, if the use is solely non-commercial. This does have a limitation, however. The owner would not be able to use a charter helicopter service to arrive at his private helideck.’

Even if a Red Ensign yacht complies fully with Annex 6 and is approved by the flag state, its crew, helicopter and pilot are subject to the requirements of the port state as well. Even Annex 6 states, ‘The landing area will be limited to receiving helicopters in the conditions agreed by the Aviation Inspection Body.’ This refers to weather conditions, but it is more broadly applicable. To navigate such a labyrinth of requirements is daunting. Many owners and captains delegate this task to specialised private agencies that assure all is in order before arrival.

Wanted: space

‘The length free of obstacles is 1.25 times the length between the tail rotor and the main rotor shaft. Say that distance is 13 metres, then you need 16 metres length free of obstacles. This is a large area, especially on yachts less than 70 metres,’ notes Ronno Schouten, chief designer for De Voogt Naval Architects.

Some builders have developed clever methods for dealing with clearances and ground-plane (airflow) effects. Folding rails are employed in many cases, as is removable safety netting and flush-mounted lighting. In other cases, the structure itself converts during helicopter operations. For instance, the hardtop on the 50 metre Westport Vango hinges up 90 degrees to create additional clearance, and block the airflow interaction between the helicopter’s rotor and the yacht’s mast and satcom domes.

Location, location, location

‘Siting of the helideck is much more likely to be driven by the aesthetics of the yacht design rather than the potential hazards of turbulence and motion,’ says Nelson. A helideck on the top deck is more subject to roll than one on the main deck, for example.

‘The owner’s choice between landing on the foredeck or aft has large implications on the design,’ says Schouten. ‘A pad on the foredeck has less impact on design and enables landing when the aft decks are in use by the guests. However, landing in this location is in general not possible when the boat is moving.’

‘The turbulence generated by the superstructure is greater and more troublesome where there are angular corners and large blocky faces,’ says Nelson. ‘There are ways of designing features that minimise airflow disruption – just look at any modern car. If we are involved with a yacht at the design stage, we always encourage such ideas and the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to avoid problems with turbulence.’

The next thing on the horizon for air tenders will probably be tilt-rotor aircraft and one UK design firm has already begun a yacht design that would land an AW609 aircraft. ‘For something like a tilt rotor, which may be susceptible to turbulence, CFD analysis is a must,’ Nelson says. This is still in the future, however, as certification for the civilian AW609 has moved back to 2017. Of course, for an owner who desires an aircraft that can cruise at 300mph for 852 miles, carry nine passengers and land on his deck, three years is minimal design time.

Weighty considerations

All helipads, both certified and touch-and-go are designed for a crash load that is 2.5 times the helicopter’s maximum weight. Normally, decks are designed only for sea and human loading, and occasionally for point loads from tender stowage, but when helicopter operations are added, they must be strengthened, with added structure sometimes required from the helideck down to the keel. This adds weight, which increases overall displacement, adversely affecting speed and fuel consumption continually. Except on the largest yachts, helidecks are usually at or near the top of the yacht. This added weight, at such a distance above the keel, also will have a significant negative effect on the yacht’s stability, so added beam and fin stabilisation may be necessary to compensate.

‘It is extremely important designers and ship builders get aviation advice as early as possible to avoid difficulties or costly alterations later. The main objective is to establish at the outset what the owner wants to use his helicopter for, as that drives the design and equipment,’ says Nelson. ‘For example, does the owner want to do ocean transits with his helicopter, which may mean a hangar is required? Does he need to fly at night, which requires a lighting plan? How much flying is intended and does the helicopter require onboard fuel or maintenance capability?’

Builders and designers report that most yachts above 60 metres build in minimal touch-and-go capability, for emergency evacuation if not regular use. Nelson’s database includes 66 yachts over 60 metres with helidecks, including nine that are fully certified. Yet another option for some owners is touch-and-go capability aboard the yacht itself along with MCA Annex 6-compliant landing and stowage aboard a shadow vessel.

Choices in helideck configuration, it seems, are limited by the size of the yacht and the scope of the designer’s imagination in meeting regulatory requirements.
