These days, tattoos are so commonplace in the U.S. military that every branch has its own policy as part of its uniform regulations, but a few years ago that wasn’t the case. The U.S. Navy , however, has a long tradition of sailor tattoos.

Here’s the meaning behind a few of the classic sailor tattoos:

1. fully-rigged ships.

ship sailor tattoos

A tattoo of a fully-rigged ship from the age of sail means the sailor had been around Cape Horn, the rough, stormy waters around the southern tip of South America. A fully-rigged ship is one with three or more masts, square sails fully deployed.

2. Nautical Star

The star is a symbol of a sailor always to be able to find his way home. The nautical star is a five-pointed star in dark and light shades counterchanged to resemble a compass rose.

3. Shellback Turtle

5. Swallows

Sailors earn a new swallow tattoo for every 5,000 nautical miles traveled, which is about 5,754 regular miles, roughly the distance between New York City and Tel Aviv. The circumference of the earth is 21,639 nautical miles, just about 4.16 sparrows.

anchor sailor tattoos meaning

A single anchor means the sailor crossed the Atlantic or has been a member of the merchant marine, a fleet of civilian ships that carries military cargo. In wartime, this fleet is mobilized to carry war materiel, including troops and supplies.

During World War II, the Merchant Marine took a beating with high casualties, entering the European war long before the United States itself. Since the U.S. was delivering war supplies to Britain through Lend-Lease, Nazi u-boats targeted U.S. shipping bound for the UK. The Merchant Marine casualty rate was 3.9 percent, whereas the Marine Corps’, the next highest, was only 2.94 percent.

7. Rope on the Wrist

rope on the wrist

A knot of rope on a sailors wrist identifies him as a deckhand, someone who maintains the hull, decks, superstructure, mooring, and cargo handling. Deckhands are still common in ocean-going vessels, though they’re far less likely to be maintaining wooden ships.

8. Hula Girl

Hula girls signify the sailor has been to Hawaii.

9. Crossed Anchors

Sailors wearing the crossed anchors on the webbing between their thumb and index finger are identifying themselves as boatswain’s mates, the guys who maintain the deck and take care of smaller boat operations and damage control parties.

10. HOLD and FAST

These words are a charm spelled out on the four front-facing fingers on each hand. Sailors hope it brings them good luck while gripping the rigging. Holding fast means the sailor isn’t going to let the line go, no matter what. Sailors were a superstitious bunch and life on a sailing ship was tough (to say the least). Anything that gave them the edge in saving their own lives was worth doing.

11. Pig and Rooster

When a sailor crossed the International Date Line, he earns the right to wear the Golden Dragon tattoo. The International Date Line is the imaginary line of longitude that separates two calendar dates. When someone sails from East to West, they set their clock back one hour for every 15 degrees of longitude they pass. When they pass the date line, they’ve gained a full 24 hours.

17. Harpoon

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: What is the Significance?

Sailboat tattoos can hold various meanings depending on the individual and their personal experiences or beliefs. Here are a few possible interpretations:

Adventure and Exploration

Sailboats have been a symbol of adventure and exploration for centuries, representing the spirit of discovery and the thrill of charting new waters. Sailors have long relied on the wind to power their vessels, bravely setting out into uncharted territories with little more than a sense of direction and a desire to explore.

A sailboat tattoo is often seen as a way to capture this spirit of adventure and exploration. It can be a powerful symbol of the desire to push past one’s boundaries, take risks, and embrace the unknown. Whether it’s the idea of sailing off into the sunset or simply the freedom to explore new possibilities, a sailboat tattoo can serve as a reminder to stay curious and keep pushing forward.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

For many people, a sailboat tattoo represents a love of travel and the desire to see the world. It can be a way to honor a favorite sailing trip, commemorate a special destination, or simply express a passion for wanderlust. By choosing to wear a sailboat tattoo, an individual can communicate their adventurous spirit and willingness to explore new horizons.

But beyond just being a symbol of adventure, a sailboat tattoo can also represent personal growth and change. Just as a sailor must learn to navigate changing winds and tides, a person with a sailboat tattoo might see themselves as someone who is adaptable and open to new experiences. The tattoo can be a representation of their willingness to embrace challenges, take calculated risks, and chart their own course in life.

Freedom and Independence

A sailboat tattoo is a popular design that holds significant meaning for many individuals. The image of a sailboat gliding through the water with the wind as its guide can evoke a sense of freedom, adventure, and independence. This tattoo design often represents a desire to break free from limitations and live life on one’s own terms.

The sailboat itself is a symbol of exploration, discovery, and navigation. It represents a journey into the unknown, an adventure that requires courage and determination. The wind that propels the boat forward represents the power of nature and the forces that drive us forward in life. In this way, the sailboat tattoo can also be interpreted as a reminder to stay true to oneself, to trust in one’s own abilities, and to embrace the challenges and opportunities that come our way.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

For some, the sailboat tattoo may also hold a deeper spiritual meaning. The act of sailing can be a meditative experience, as one becomes attuned to the rhythm of the waves and the movement of the boat. The sailboat can represent a journey towards self-discovery and enlightenment, a quest for inner peace and harmony.

Overall, the sailboat tattoo is a powerful symbol of freedom and independence, representing the desire to chart one’s own course in life. Whether as a reminder to stay true to oneself, a symbol of spiritual growth, or simply a celebration of adventure and exploration, this tattoo design holds a special place in the hearts of many.

Journey and Progress

A sailboat is a watercraft that is powered by the wind, and it has been used for thousands of years to transport goods and people across seas and oceans. The design of a sailboat tattoo can vary greatly, but it typically includes an image of a sailboat with its sails billowing in the wind.

The sailboat tattoo has a symbolic meaning that represents the idea of progress and moving forward in life. Just like a sailboat relies on the wind to move forward, we too rely on certain forces in our lives to propel us forward. These forces could be personal goals, achievements, relationships, or even challenges that we have overcome.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

Choosing to get a sailboat tattoo might be a way to celebrate personal growth and achievements, as well as the obstacles that were overcome along the way. It’s an enduring reminder of one’s inner strength, resilience, and perseverance in overcoming challenges.

Additionally, a sailboat tattoo may also represent the desire for adventure and exploration. Sailing on the open sea can be exhilarating, and a sailboat tattoo can serve as a reminder to embrace new experiences and seek out opportunities for growth and personal development.

Overall, the sailboat tattoo is a powerful symbol that embodies the idea of progress, growth, resilience, and adventure. It’s a meaningful way to commemorate personal milestones and accomplishments while embracing the constant journey of self-improvement and exploration.

Nautical Lifestyle

Sailboat tattoos are a popular design choice among those who have a strong affinity for the sea, sailing, and the nautical lifestyle. These tattoos can represent a deep connection to the ocean and all that it encompasses, from the freedom of sailing on the open water to the sense of adventure and exploration that comes with being out at sea.

For sailors, a sailboat tattoo can symbolize their passion for the craft and the many hours spent navigating the waters. It can also serve as a reminder of the challenges and rewards that come with life at sea, including the camaraderie shared among crew members and the sense of accomplishment that comes with successfully completing a long voyage.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

Similarly, for sea enthusiasts who may not necessarily be sailors themselves, a sailboat tattoo can signify their love for the ocean and the many adventures it offers. From surfing and swimming to diving and fishing, there are countless ways to enjoy the sea, and a sailboat tattoo can be a way to celebrate this connection.

Finally, for those who simply have a deep love for the ocean, a sailboat tattoo can serve as a symbol of their admiration for this vast and beautiful body of water. It can be a way to express a deep appreciation for the natural world and all that it has to offer, from the majesty of the waves to the mysteries of the deep.

Peace and Tranquility

A sailboat tattoo can hold a variety of meanings, but one interpretation that may resonate with individuals seeking a symbol of resilience and steadiness in the face of adversity is that of staying calm and composed during life’s storms.

Sailboats are often associated with freedom, adventure, and exploration. They are vessels that rely on the wind to propel them forward, requiring skillful navigation and adaptability to changing conditions. These qualities can serve as a powerful metaphor for navigating life’s challenges.

When the seas get rough and the winds pick up, a sailboat’s ability to stay upright and continue moving forward depends on the captain’s ability to remain steady and focused. In the same way, a person facing difficult circumstances can draw strength from the image of a sailboat, reminding themselves to stay calm and composed amidst the chaos.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

The sailboat tattoo can also represent a sense of self-reliance and independence. Sailors must rely on their own skills and resourcefulness to navigate the open waters, and this can translate to a person’s ability to overcome obstacles and chart their own course in life.

Overall, a sailboat tattoo can be a powerful symbol of resilience and inner strength. It serves as a reminder to stay grounded and steady in the face of life’s storms, relying on one’s own abilities and determination to keep moving forward.

Memorial or Tribute

A sailboat tattoo is a powerful symbol that can hold deep meaning for those who have a connection to sailing or the sea. For many people, it represents freedom, adventure, and the thrill of being out on the water. It can also be a reminder of loved ones who shared this passion and may no longer be with us.

If someone has lost a loved one who had a connection to sailing or the sea, getting a sailboat tattoo can be a way to keep their memory alive and honor their legacy. It is a beautiful tribute that serves as a constant reminder of the person’s love for the ocean and their adventurous spirit.

The sailboat tattoo can be customized in many different ways to make it more personal and meaningful. The design can incorporate specific colors that were important to the loved one or include their name or initials somewhere in the tattoo. The image of the sailboat can also be combined with other symbols, such as an anchor or a compass, to further enhance its significance.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

Aside from being a memorial or tribute to a loved one, a sailboat tattoo can also represent the wearer’s own connection to sailing or the sea. It can signify their love for the ocean and the freedom that comes with being out on the water. It can also serve as a reminder to take risks, embrace adventure, and live life to the fullest.

Overall, a sailboat tattoo is a powerful symbol that holds great meaning for those who have a connection to sailing or the sea. Whether it serves as a tribute to a loved one or as a reminder of one’s own passion for the ocean, it is a beautiful and timeless design that will always hold a special place in the wearer’s heart.

Metaphor for Life’s Journey

A sailboat tattoo is a popular design that symbolizes the journey of life. The voyage of a sailboat parallels the path we take in our lives, as we navigate through various challenges, face changing winds and ultimately reach our desired destinations. This tattoo can be interpreted as a metaphorical representation of life’s journey and the experiences that we encounter along the way.

The sailboat represents the vessel that carries us through life, guiding us on our journey towards our goals and aspirations. It reminds us that the journey may not always be smooth sailing, but with perseverance, we can overcome any obstacle that comes our way. The wind, which is an integral part of sailing, represents the forces that influence our lives, whether it be external or internal. These forces can steer us in new directions, create unexpected challenges and sometimes even propel us towards our destination.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

The sailboat tattoo also signifies the importance of being adaptable and flexible in life. Just as a sailor adjusts the sails to catch the wind, we too must adjust and adapt to the changes that come our way. We must be prepared to change course when necessary, embrace new opportunities and learn from our mistakes along the way.

It’s important to note that tattoo meanings can be highly individual and can vary based on personal experiences and beliefs. If you’re considering getting a sailboat tattoo, take time to reflect on what the image means to you and how it aligns with your life story and aspirations.

50 Ship Tattoo Ideas: Nautical Designs that Navigate the Skin

Dylan

Ship tattoos are timeless designs that have been popular for decades. They symbolize a sense of adventure, exploration, and the excitement of discovering new horizons.

Whether you’re a sailor or simply love the sea, a ship tattoo is a great way to showcase your passion for the ocean.

In this guide, we’ll explore some ship tattoo ideas that can help you navigate the sea of tattoo designs and find the perfect one for you.

History of Ship Tattoos

In the 1700s and 1800s, sailors often got tattoos of ships to commemorate their journeys at sea. These tattoos were also a way for sailors to show their expertise and experience in sailing.

A sailor with a ship tattoo was someone who had been around the world and had likely seen things that few others at home had.

During the 19th century, ship tattoos became more popular and began to feature more intricate designs.

Sailors would often get tattoos of specific ships, such as the ship they served on or the ship that brought them home after a long journey.

Some sailors even got tattoos of famous ships from history, such as the HMS Victory or the USS Constitution.

In the early 20th century, ship tattoos continued to be popular among sailors. However, the designs began to evolve to include more abstract and artistic depictions of ships. The Sailor Jerry tattoo style was popularized at this time.

Sailors began to incorporate other nautical elements into their tattoos, such as anchors, mermaids, and compasses.

Today, ship tattoos are still popular among sailors and non-sailors alike. The designs have become even more elaborate and intricate, incorporating elements of realism and fantasy.

Some people get ship tattoos to honor their own sailing experiences, while others get them simply because they appreciate the beauty and symbolism of ships.

Regardless of the reason, ship tattoos remain a beloved and enduring symbol of the seafaring life.

The Biblical Meaning of Ships

Ships are mentioned throughout the Bible, and they can have different meanings depending on the context. Here are some of the mentions and what they can mean. Although like much in the Bible, it’s open to interpretation.

  • A means of transportation: In the Bible, ships were often used to transport people and goods across the sea. For example, in Acts 27, the Apostle Paul and his companions were shipwrecked on the island of Malta while sailing from Caesarea to Rome.
  • A symbol of prosperity: In the Old Testament, ships were often associated with trade and commerce, which were sources of wealth and prosperity. For example, in 1 Kings 10:22, it is said that King Solomon had a fleet of ships that brought him gold, silver, ivory, and apes from distant lands.
  • A symbol of salvation: In the New Testament, ships can symbolize salvation or deliverance. For example, in Matthew 14:22-33, Jesus walked on water and calmed the storm that was threatening the boat that his disciples were in. This demonstrated his power over nature and his ability to save those who put their trust in him.
  • A symbol of faith: In the Bible, ships can also symbolize faith or trust in God. For example, in Hebrews 11:7, Noah built an ark in faith, trusting that God would save him and his family from the flood.
  • A symbol of the church: In some interpretations, ships can symbolize the church, which is seen as a vessel that carries people to salvation. This idea is reflected in hymns like “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me,” which compares Jesus to a pilot who guides the ship of the church through the storms of life.

Nautical Tattoos: Symbolism and Meanings

What is the meaning of anchor and mermaid tattoos

Nautical tattoos speak their own language, and if you understand the symbolism and meanings behind them you can discern tons of information about a sailor without needing to speak a word. There are plenty of things in this information age that come and go, but the meanings behind nautical tattoos are as steadfast as the sailors who proudly wear them. Let's take a look at some of the most common nautical tattoos and the stories behind them from head to toe.

Speaking of head to toe, you'll want to make sure that your vessel is clean from bow to stern with our boat wash soap concentrate! That squeaky clean look won't be complete without a once over with our marine metal polish . The days of dirty ships and grizzled sailors is a thing of the past, we are only bringing the good parts of sailing into the future... Like all of the awesome symbolic tattoos!

Nautical Tattoos: Symbolism and Meaning tattoo gun grayscale

Swallow(s):

For every 5000 nautical miles traveled a dedicated sailor might choose to decorate his body with another swallow. Why this bird in particular? Well, swallows are migratory birds that will travel 6000 miles from the UK to the Sahara in order to avoid the UK's inclement winters. If only sailors had a choice in the matter. Unlike those lucky birds, we must brave whatever comes.

Full Rigged Ship:

One of the only nautical tattoos on our list that I'd actually not be qualified to wear is a ship with full rigging . This tattoo symbolizes that a sailor has made their way around Cape Horn. The southernmost tip of South America features some rough waters, but fewer and fewer people qualify for this nautical tattoo thanks to the building of the Panama Canal.

Nautical Star:

A nautical star is a sailing tattoo that represents the north star. You can find this one anywhere on the body but the forearms or collarbone seem to be the most popular choices from what I've seen. With a nautical star adorning their body, a sailor will never need to worry about being lost. If they do end up lost, this star is sure to guide them back home.

Nautical Tattoos: Symbolism and Meaning artistic arm

Shellback Turtle:

If you see a sailor with a turtle tattoo it means that they've been initiated into Neptune's court. How does one get initiated into Neptune's court? By crossing the equator, of course! This is another one that can be seen almost anywhere though I've seen quite a few shellbacks on shoulders, calves, and the old reliable forearm.

Crossed Cannons:

Everyone that I served with had the distinction of being qualified for the crossed cannons. Not really a huge surprise, considering that we were all serving in the Navy. Yes indeed, this nautical tattoo represents naval military service. Whenever I see someone with a pair of crossed cannons I know for sure that we have at least one topic that we can discuss at great length.

A single anchor might symbolize that the person you're looking at is a merchant marine. Alternatively, it could mean that a sailor has crossed the Atlantic. Usually it means both at the same time. Those merchant marines tend to get around! It might also mean neither... I've met my fair share of sailors that simply got an anchor tattoo because they enjoyed boating. Nothing wrong with that. The meaning is becoming a bit diluted however so if there is any doubt? Just ask!

The one and only place you can find hula girls is Hawaii, so I suppose it makes good sense that a sailor would want to leave the island with a souvenir inked into their skin. I really like this tattoo if it's placed in just the right spot on your forearm you can make that little hula girl dance. Might not seem like much but after 6 months at sea? You'll be glad to have it! Haha.

Nautical Tattoos: Symbolism and Meaning in progress tat

If you see a braided rope tattooed around a sailor's wrist indicates that a sailor works as a deckhand, or at least served some time working as a deckhand. If I spent as much time around rope as the average deckhand, a tattoo of rope is the last thing I'd want but you can't fight tradition!

Crossed Anchors:

A pair of crossed anchors on the webbing between the thumb and forefinger signifies that sailor as a boswain's mate . The duties of a boswain's mate are extremely varied, but they do all require some degree of teamwork which is illustrated by the two anchors coming together.

"HOLD FAST":

Tattoos across the knuckles are pretty cool, but they aren't for everyone. I've heard people call them 'everlasting job stoppers' and that isn't far from the truth, but if you're willing to put in some hard physical labor then getting hired is a given. HOLD FAST is a nautical tattoo for your knuckles that supposedly increases your grip on lines and rigging. I might've gotten this one myself, but instead I went for "PROU DOFU".

Pig and/or Rooster:

You might see a sailor with a pig or rooster tattooed on their feet. Once upon a time these were common nautical tattoos for sailors who didn't know how to swim. These days finding a sailor who doesn't know how to swim is akin to searching out a needle in a haystack, but these foot tattoos are still thought to stop people from drowning.

We've got more nautical superstitions to discuss if you're interested!

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Tim Prophit on Fast Tango avoids starting line crash for a win in Chicago to Mackinac race

Portrait of Phoebe Wall Howard

Tim Prophit, of St. Clair Shores, didn't crash the boat at the starting line as he feared he would.

So, that was good.

"We brought the mayhem," he told the Detroit Free Press late Monday. "We dodged a couple bullets."

The skipper of Fast Tango — and past commodore of Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit — did more than simply dodge bullets. He won his class and placed second overall in his division in the Chicago to Mackinac race. When he talked to the Detroit Free Press, many of the boats in his class were still stranded on the water more than eight hours later because the wind died.

Winning an 11th first-in-class title in the epic sailboat race is astonishing by every objective measure, especially just one week after winning a first-in-class and first overall in the 99th annual Bayview Mackinac race from Port Huron to the island in high winds.

This week, not only did Fast Tango nearly crash into the race committee boat at the start, as well as a competitor's boat, but it headed into the final leg at the back of the pack, said Prophit. The sailor is known for his sleeve tattoos, use of profanity and finding sustenance in cigarettes and coffee.

But it's his racing skill and ability to navigate the wind that stun the sailing community.

"We had to get north as fast as possible and work our way east to get the breeze off the Michigan shore. We won that way in 1992," Prophit said. "The guys who went more west, which was our original plan, absolutely destroyed us. They had more breeze. They were all ahead of us except two boats. But we predicted the air on the lake would die and air close to the Michigan shore would not die. That's when we started striking back. We were in 10th or 11th place and we just went to work."

Racing on Lake Huron and Lake Michigan

This is his 11th first-in-class victory from Chicago to Mackinac in 28 attempts.

Last week, his 11th first-in-class win in the Bayview Mackinac race was accomplished after 41 tries.

The crew of Fast Tango met for a team dinner after the race at the Pink Pony on Mackinac Island and Prophit couldn't finish his hamburger.

"I was so excited I couldn't eat," Prophit said. "This is pretty huge."

Fast Tango, a North American 40, raced 51:24:56 hours. Das Boot 3.0, an Italia 9.98 sailboat owned by Jay Muller, of Ludington, placed second. Dark Horse, a Hobie 33 owned by Dan McGraw, of Atlanta, and Matt Krogstad, of Mill Valley, Calif., placed third.

Fast Tango "gave their all," Prophit said. "I'm (profanity) exhausted."

Liquid Lounge II was the one to beat

Molly Radtke, of Grosse Pointe Farms, who also raced and won on Fast Tango a week earlier, credited Prophit's "intensity and leadership" and boat and crew preparation. She said Prophit takes apart the boat by hand, cleaning and fixing and examining pieces, prior to the races.

Jim Caesar, of Chicago and on the J/109 sailboat Liquid Lounge II, won the overall category (and the Chicago to Mackinac trophy) racing against some 100 other boats by finishing in 49:59:14 hours. On corrected time, which rates boats based on design as well as sails, Fast Tango trailed Liquid Lounge II in the bigger division by only 13:36 minutes, according to the race website .

The margin is palatable, Prophit said. One year he lost by four seconds and considered therapy.

This year was rough, but better.

"I had an insane start," he said. In addition to thinking he was going to hit those boats, "I thought we were over (the starting line) early. But someone on race committee gave us thumbs up," Prophit said. "We pulled it off. The tactician on the boat says, 'Tim, start here.' I put the boat where I'm told. We don't win every start but we win a lot. Good starts are a great contributor to good finishes. If we had gotten buried at the start, we may have had a different outcome."

More: At 15, Merritt Sellers returns to Mackinac races and inspires young first-time sailors

Peter Wenzler, of Grosse Pointe, said after the team dinner: "We never stopped. We never quit. We had a game plan, and even after it looked like it wasn't such a great plan, we kept working it. The guys say, 'Never quit. We can win this.' Everyone thinks we have a chance to win it all. ... The big thing for us was our strategy Saturday night. It just appeared we were not doing well. By Sunday morning, we were in 11th of, I think, 12 boats in our class. We were kind of beating ourselves up."

Trailing under shooting stars

The weather and the forecasts were out of synch, especially involving wind.

"While the conditions were physically mild, the varying wind patterns required a lot of teamwork in order to keep the boat moving effectively," said Dave Simon, of Grosse Pointe Woods. "The race was visually gorgeous, beginning with the Chicago skyline, moving to the stunning sand dunes of the Michigan west coast and a good number of shooting stars each night."

With these victories, sailors are watching for Prophit to win the highly prestigious Barthel Trophy. The award goes to the boat with the best overall scores in the Port Huron to Mackinac race, the Chicago to Mackinac race and the Trans Superior race that begins near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and ends in Duluth, Minnesota, on Aug. 5. It is one of the greatest honors for sailors who race the Great Lakes.

Bayview Yacht Club Commodore Paul Hulsey, who placed third in class on the J/130 Pendragon in the Chicago to Mackinac race, told the Free Press during and interview as he drove home to Grosse Pointe late Monday: "I don't think there's any way Tim won't win it. There aren't enough entries in the Trans Superior to overtake him."

Reading the clouds

The Chicago to Mackinac race had 240 entrants in all divisions, according to the Chicago Yacht Club.

Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit saw its first female commodore in 100 years make the podium, too.

Lynn Kotwicki, of Royal Oak, raced on the J/120 Hot Ticket, owned by Michael Kirkman, of Novi, and won first in class after 49:04:23 hours on the water.

"When the wind shut(s) off, we engage even more, you focus more," Kotwicki said. "For a lot of people, light air is boring. That's when we work harder. It's about looking outside the boat, and anything you see — what's the competition doing, what's the weather doing, looking at the cloud patterns and understanding what could be next and be ready for it. Then adjusting the sails, choosing the right sails, positioning the boat for when you think where the wind is going to come from."

She added, "You can tell that by watching the cloud patterns. There's different looking clouds and understanding what those clouds mean and having the boat set up to be ready to react to what's coming."

The J/120 sailboats raced well in the class won by Hot Ticket. Proof, owned by Michael Fozo, of Grosse Pointe Farms, placed second. And FUNTECH, owned by Charles Hess, of Birmingham, took third.

U.S. Naval Academy team improves

Avenger, the J/105 boat raced by U.S. Naval Academy sailors, placed fifth in class in the Chicago to Mackinac race after 52:43:17 hours on the water. They placed eighth in the Port Huron to Mackinac race this year after driving up from Annapolis .

Skipper Pat Fisher, of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, told the Free Press on Tuesday: "The conditions were, in a lot of ways, similar to the Bayview Mack(inac), with a wide variety of wind speeds and conditions on the lake. When we crossed (Lake Michigan), it was blowing probably 18 knots. Then, a few hours later, the wind started to die a little bit. And it was kind of a drift fest. I really hope that Navy decides to come back in the near future. It was a really good experience."

The U.S. Navy said it viewed the competition as a nice opportunity to connect with sailor s and potential recruits.

Bears' Velus Jones 'can’t wait to remind people' of what he can do on offense

The 6-foot, 200-pounder figures to get plenty of chances this preseason, considering the bears are likely to limit allen’s and moore’s snaps..

Two years after Velus Jones became the first offensive player drafted by Bears general manager Ryan Poles, he’s ready to contribute more on that side of the ball.

“It’s in me,” he said Thursday. “It’s not on me, it’s in me.”

In two seasons, the former third-round selection has caught just 11 passes for 127 yards and has run 17 times for 154 yards. The player the Bears first envisioned as being a weapon on offense — “There’s something about him,” Poles said on draft night in 2022 — has been mostly a gadget player.

BEARS-072424-32.jpg

Making an impact on offense has only gotten tougher for Jones. After starting his career playing alongside journeyman receivers, he’s now behind Keenan Allen, an eight-time Pro Bowl player; DJ Moore, who is coming off his best season; and No. 9 overall pick Rome Odunze. Tyler Scott, a fourth-round pick in 2023, had almost five times as many targets last year as Jones did.

Jones, who once shared a USC receivers room with future NFL stars Michael Pittman, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Drake London, isn’t worried.

“My film speaks,” said Jones, who is already 27. “If you watch my college highlights (and) the positive things I did with the Bears with the ball in my hands … I feel like I’m still that same player. When I get the ball in my hands, I’m special, especially. I feel like there’s not many DBs that can tackle someone of my size and speed.”

The 6-foot, 200-pounder figures to get plenty of chances this preseason, considering the Bears are likely to limit Allen and Moore’s snaps.

“I can’t just wait for this preseason to get the ball in my hands to run past some guys, run through some guys, and let my natural abilities take over, like they always do,” he said. “I feel like it can be easy to forget what a player can do when you don’t see it … I can’t wait to remind people.”

Jones dealt with injuries and ball security issues in each of his first two training camps.

“That’s the past,” he said. “The thing about film is you can watch film from the past, but they can’t judge about now and how I progressed and how hard I’ve been working.

“It doesn’t matter what anybody has to say about you. They’re not the one putting in the extra work … it’s all about you vs. you.”

His fumbling of a punt in a preseason game last year prompted the Bears to add Trent Taylor on cutdown day. Veteran DeAndre Carter has the inside track to return punts this year.

Jones, though, remains one of the elite kick returners in the NFL.

In the past two seasons, only one player with at least 25 kickoff returns has averaged more yards than Jones: the Packers’ Keisean Nixon, who was named an all-pro in both 2022 and 2023. Nixon averages 27.6 yards per kickoff return, while Jones averages 27.4.

The Bears believe the NFL’s new kickoff return will only make Jones more dangerous.

“I just think with a player with his size — 6 foot, 200-plus pounds — that can run a 4.31(-second 40-yard dash, they don’t make guys like that every day,” special teams coordinator Richard Hightower said.

Awarding the ball at the 30-yard line on a touchback that reaches the end zone should incentivize teams to kick to Jones, who grew tired of watching the ball sail into the end zone last year.

“You feel useless, just sitting back there and watching touchbacks,” Jones said.

The new blocking setup — in which 10 members of the kick coverage team will line up at the opposing 40, five yards from blockers — will look different. Jones is ready for it.

“It’s definitely good news,” he said.” It increases my value, what I bring.

“I’ve been special at this for a while now. It’s a huge reason why I’m here in the first place.”

The world’s best 330 men’s and women’s sailors will compete at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 , from 28 July to 8 August.

Sixty-five nations have qualified to compete across 10 different events, all of which will take place in the waters of Marseille Marina in South France.

It is important to note that the field of athletes will be evenly split by gender, featuring 165 men and 165 women. Kite will also be part of sailing at the Olympic Games for the first time ever.

Great Britain had a strong showing at Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 , winning five medals in total, including three golds in the women’s 470, men’s 49er and men’s Finn. Australia won two gold medals as well in Tokyo, taking home titles in both the men’s 470 and Laser.

Tokyo was a microcosm of Olympic history as Great Britain has far and away the most sailing gold medals of any nation with 31 (64 total medals) since the sport’s inception at the Olympic Games in 1900. The USA is second with 19 gold medals and 61 medals in total.

The 2024 Republican National Convention commences Monday in Milwaukee just days after presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt . Trump is still expected the address the delegates on Thursday, the last day of the convention.

"President Trump looks forward to joining you all in Milwaukee as we proceed with our convention to nominate him to serve as the 47th President of the United States," the RNC and the Trump campaign said in a joint statement issued Saturday. "As our party's nominee, President Trump will continue to share his vision to Make America Great Again."

On Saturday, the former president was injured after being shot in the right ear in an assassination attempt as a 20-year-old gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, opened fire on a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A spectator, Corey Comperatore, was killed and two others were wounded. The gunman was killed by Secret Service agents moments after shots rang out.

The historic moment of shocking political violence has put the country on edge and has morphed the convention from a routine political ritual into a landmark event.

Here's a list of all those who will be speaking at the 2024 Republican National Convention, according to the organizers.

Nikki Haley added to speaker list

Former South Carolina governor - and Trump rival - Nikki Haley is now expected to speak at the convention. Haley, the runner-up to Trump in this year's Republican primaries, was originally not planning to speak to the convention, or even to attend it.

Details on Haley's presence at the convention are limited for now, but a person familiar with convention planning, told USA TODAY Sunday that Haley is now on the speaker list.

During the Republican primaries, Haley angered Trump by staying the race longer than he wanted. Haley, who served as Trump's ambassador to the United Nations, also criticized Trump frequently and was taunted by Trump in response.

Two videos posted on social media that were verified by The New York Times appeared to show the person suspected of shooting at former President Donald J. Trump lying motionless on the roof of a small building roughly 400 feet north of the stage Mr. Trump was speaking from.

The location of the body matches the likely firing position. An audio analysis of the gunfire determined it came from approximately the same distance as the body’s location, and the visible injury to the right ear of Mr. Trump, who was facing northwest, was also consistent with gunfire from that direction.

A spokesman for the Secret Service, Anthony Guglielmi, said the suspected gunman “fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside the rally venue.” The suspect had been killed, the Secret Service said.

The audio analysis of the gunshots conducted by The Times and Robert C. Maher, a gunfire acoustics expert at Montana State University in Bozeman, indicates that two bursts of shots were fired. Both the first round of three and the second of five shots were fired approximately 330 to 390 feet from the C-SPAN microphone Mr. Trump was speaking into. That location was consistent with the location of the suspect’s body. There was no significant difference between the sound of the eight shots, which suggests that they likely came from the same firearm, Mr. Maher said.

A witness told the BBC that he saw an armed man “in muted colors, tan-typed clothing” climbing up the roof of a building of the same compound captured in the videos. The witness, who gave his name as Greg, said he attempted to alert the police to the man’s presence, minutes before the shots were fired.
