On all skippered charters the clinet has to take care of the yacht's provisioning or hire a hostess to supply the boat. The unspent part of the charter APA is later returned to the guests or spent on marina fees and fuel during your week.

Basic assignments of a hostess

• keeping all areas on yacht clean and tidy
• handling the provisioning throughout the trip (shopping for supplies, stocking boat lockers before and during your trip)

That depends on the level of the tasks, requests and how many guests are there to cater. Her basic fee is 130€ per day and can go up to 180€ . This fee does not include gratuity nor the meals for the crew; They can join you for meals or allow 30€ pocket money per crew member per day.

Where does a hostess sleep?

The front bow cabins on catamarans are usually occupied with the crew, that is why we recommend to charter sailing yacht with 2 separate crew cabins. Most of the sailing catamarans in Croatia have such a layout. Sometimes, the crew can also sleep in the salon, but it is not something we advise, since everyone needs time to rest, so they can give you their best during the day.

It is also customary to take care of the crew's meals on your sailing trip. Feel free to invite your crew to join you at the dinner, they will be more than happy. If you wish to dine in privacy, they can east separately.

A Tip: When you hire a hostess you already have 2 meals included. That gives you extra time to explore the islands where you can dine in a local restaurant your crew will be happy to recommend. Here you can taste Dalmatian delicacies in fisherma's tavern called "konoba" - a must try!

Alternatively, we also hear – “ We would like the skipper to be actively involved in our holiday”. The easy answer is – both are possible. If you want to spend your time in the company of your friends and family, the skipper will respect your wishes and stay out of your way. However, if you want more interaction and conversation, he'll be up for it. Communicate openly with your skipper throughout the week, and we trust you will find a perfect rhythm with your skipper.

Where does the skipper sleep on a boat?

Skippers must have their own accommodation on the boat. If you plan to charter a yacht with a skipper (and/or hostess), it is best to charter a yacht which already has separate crew cabins. 

If crew accommodation is not planned in the layout, then it is customary to leave one cabin for the skipper/hostess. Sometimes skippers sleep in the saloon but this is not something we advise as the crew needs time to rest so they can give you their best.

How much does a skipper cost?

Typically, crew fees depend on the level of their experience and the size of the yacht. However, to help you budget , the cost of a skipper in Croatia is usually between 150 – 250 EUR per day.

This fee does not include meals for the crew; your crew can either join you for meals or you can allow 30 EUR per crew member, per day. Also, note that this fee does not include gratuity.

Should we tip our skipper in Croatia?

We recommend you keep tipping in mind while you're planning your holiday budget. Although tipping is not mandatory in Croatia, a tip of 10%-20% of the charter price is customary , especially if you're satisfied with the skipper's service.

Yacht Delphinus is a beautiful, privately owned 50 foot blue water sailing yacht designed by the highly regarded and successful designer of racing and cruising yachts, Bruce Farr.

The majority of yachts  this size  offered for charter are configured with up to 5 cabins to accommodate 10 persons on board.  Some are even advertised to accommodate as many as 12 persons with two being required to sleep in the saloon!

Stress free and flexibility

The itinerary for your cruise onboard Yacht Delphinus is flexible to suit how you like to spend your time on holiday and to maximise your enjoyment. It can be tailored to the number of actual sailing miles you wish to log each day, time spent sightseeing, swimming in the warm crystal clear water, learning the ropes, brushing up on RYA navigation theory, honing your boat handling skills and mooring techniques or just lazy days afloat reading a book on deck whilst soaking up the sun with a cold drink in hand as we hop between the stunning Islands and Dalmatian coastline. As always however, weather conditions can sometimes dictate the day. Here is a sample itinerary for guests arriving early or mid morning.

Meet and greet at the airport. A short drive to Cavtat for a leg stretch around this picturesque harbour followed by a curtesy drive up to the top of Mount Srd to take in the spectacular view of Dubrovnik 'Old Town' and lunch, or just a drink (not included in the charter fee), in the cliff top 'Panorama Restaurant'. (www.nautikarestaurants.com/panorama-restaurant-bar/) Or perhaps you would prefer to head straight back to Delphinus just a 30 minute drive from the airport to relax onboard after an early start to your day. Either way, complimentary welcome drinks and snacks will be available whilst you familiarise yourself with Yacht Delphinus and we run through the 'obligatory' safety briefing. For guests keen to 'Get Going ASAP', we can slip lines and sail off to a nearby Island to anchor offshore or pick up one of the taverna mooring buoys for the evening. Those wishing to catch their breath may prefer to just chill out onboard Delphinus on her private mooring whilst enjoying complimentary drinks for the afternoon. Take a wander down to one of the local restaurants for supper or head into Dubrovnik Old Town for a 'must do' site seeing visit of this stunning UNESCO World Heritage site.

Lokrum and Sipan

A short sail round to Dubrovnik Old Town to get your sea legs and take in the view of this breath taking fortification from seaward. Anchor for lunch off the nearby island of Lokrum. Swim or tender ashore to explore this charming little Island. Afternoon sail to the Island of Sipan. Anchor and take the tender ashore for supper or perhaps enjoy the Skippers' BBQ onboard.

Ston and Mljet

Sail to the little town of Ston on the Peljesac peninsular, famous for its salt pans and oyster farms, sight see the town and 'walk the wall' for those feeling energetic. The view from the top is worth the effort! Afternoon sail over to the island of Mljet to overnight in one of the many picturesque harbours.

Sail up along the coast of Mljet to Polace or Pomena on its most Western tip. From there, take a taxi or hire electric bicycles to visit the beautiful national park and enjoy a lakeside picnic lunch. Perhaps the Skippers BBQ on board at anchor in the evening or moor up outside one of the local Tavernas for supper.

Sail over to the Island of Korcula to experience the beautiful old walled town of Korcula itself, often referred to as 'Little Dubrovnik, and firmly believed by Croatians to be the birth place of Marco Polo.

Sail back to the Island of Mljet and down its coastline to overnight in the beautiful harbour of Sobra or Okuklje as we make our way back to Dubrovnik.

On our sail back to Dubrovnik, anchor for lunch in one of the numerous secluded bays on route and enjoy one last swim in the clear water before tying Delphinus back up on her home mooring. Late afternoon / early evening 'must do' site seeing visit of Dubrovnik Old Town if not already done so on day of arrival.

  Hi Rob That was a holiday to remember - good weather, good sailing, great places to see, excellent food both on board and ashore. We all enjoyed it - the swimming, sailing and paddle boarding and the variety. Delphinus is a beautiful and very comfortable boat, generously sized for 4 passengers and one skipper, deceptively fast in a light wind, and very capable of battling against the wind with the motor, if needed. Most of all we benefitted from your deep knowledge of the area - the attractive little bay, an ideal stop for a swim and lunch; thank goodness for an electric anchor winch! And your guidance to the best local restaurant. We did not just enjoy the magnificent scenery at sea level, but explored several historic sites and cities which meant walking up and down steep paths and ancient steps getting a taste of the lives of the population over the centuries. Almost all navigators sailing on yacht charter in Croatia have certainly come across the idea to hire a yacht with a skipper. Most of us probably had similar initial navigation experiences.

On bareboat yacht charter we made up a crew including someone with more or less sailing experience and we set out to the sea. Perhaps we had some theoretical knowledge, but we lacked practical skill.

On most of our first sailings we had to cope with torn sails, our limbs full of bruises, entangled ropes and similar problems. Even later on, the crews sailing a week or two per year, face some difficulties in the first days, taking into account that over the years they hire different vessels which they do not have the opportunity to get used to.

Skippered yacht charters and sailing holidays in Croatia

Boat charter with a professional skipper is definitely an advantage for an inexperienced crew. As a rule, most nautical beginners predominantly have theoretical knowledge gained in the courses for obtaining a sailing licence. A week or two of navigation under skipper's instructions will help to get some good knowledge of the navigation technique and optimum exploitation for your next sailboat rental, catamaran charter or motor yacht charter experience. You can also yacht charter Croatia with crew for this purpose.

In subsequent years, such a crew will be able to sail alone without undue worries. Even more skilled skippers and crews may undergo a few days long training course of regatta sailing under the guidance of a skipper in order learn how to exploit the capabilities of vessels as well as possible.

Croatia yacht charter with skipper for a safer experience

Safety while sailing the Croatian coast should certainly be a priority. Every navigator must follow the weather forecast while experienced skippers can assess the threat of an approaching storm or other major changes of weather according to the situation in the air.

Due to the weather conditions, the Adriatic Sea can be very insidious and is considered to be a dangerous sea. As part of the Mediterranean Sea, it is full of bays and creeks, surrounded by bulks of land. That's why storms can develop faster and more unpredictably than in the oceans. Summers, however, offer longer periods of nice weather but when the weather changes, the storms are so much more severe.

In view of good sailing tour in Croatia we also need to know the wind conditions in the Adriatic.

In summer, most winds are weak, except the good sailing winds in the area of outer islands. In particular the maestral can become fairly strong in the open. It is a sign of good weather and if it does not blow it may predict the worsening of the weather.

The sirocco is less common in summer and it usually decreases to no more than 7 Beauforts.

The bora wind is very dangerous because it often strikes like a bolt from the blue, with no signs, in good weather and at high air pressure. Skilled skippers know very well that even on the lee side of the islands, the higher ones, the situation is extremely dangerous because the winds rise and become even stronger, unlike the lower islands. Therefore, a seasoned skipper takes care of firm anchoring and/or an adequate mooring. Sailing in the bora wind on the lee side of the islands and of the coast is also rather demanding despite lower waves because the gusts of the wind may tear the sails.

It is useful to know all such things. Nowadays, in the Internet Age, it is fortunately very easy to follow detailed weather forecasts for navigators, such as published at meteo.hr or at windfinder.com . These forecasts are fairly reliable for at least 24 hours, but also for up to 3 days.

Depending on the weather forecast and with the help of a skipper on a yacht you will find an ideal sailing route for amusing yacht tour as well as peaceful bays for swimming and overnight stays.

Usually, the holiday crew is made up of friends or family members. Often only one person is more or less experienced and capable to operate the vessel. However, it is essential for safe operation of a vessel that there are at least two experienced persons on board. It's been a busy few months since the world of travel opened back up and we're delighted to see so many of our customers finally taking their trips they planned over two years ago.  Back in June, two families from Canada sailed in tandem in Croatia with the two Bruno skippers and we're told they had a blast!! 

A fact you may not know, but when two boats are joined together on anchor it's called rafting. It's the perfect way to party when you have two boats together!! You’ll spend five days on board a yacht – often in a role of a skipper – and visit stunning places of the Adriatic. With the RYA Day Skipper certificate, you can charter a yacht worldwide.

We promise to expertly guide you through your first – and hardest – skippering steps on the RYA Day Skipper course. So you get the skills and confidence to take a yacht on your own after it. Indeed, what can be better than taking your friends and family on a nice cruise? And enjoy your sailing holiday safely, with you in charge.

This course is a perfect fit for sailors who want to move forward from being active crew members and learn how to manage the yacht and the crew. You would need Competent Crew sailing skills and theoretical knowledge of the Day Skipper Theory to be able to join and follow the course. You also need to be willing and open to learning and enjoying your first skippering steps because you’ll often be in a role of a skipper during the course.

Our experienced and patient RYA instructors – who firmly believe that anybody can learn how to skipper – will help you achieve your goal of becoming one. They have thousands of miles under their belt and helped hundreds of Day Skipper candidates achieve their goals.

You’ll spend five days living on board a brand new, perfectly clean, heated, spacious and fast sailing yacht fully equipped for comfortable cruising. We’ll also anchor in stunning bays perfect for swimming in crystal clear azure – hazards free – Adriatic sea. During the RYA Day Skipper course, we’ll visit picturesque islands and cosy Dalmatian villages with great local food and culture.

With the RYA Day Skipper certificate, you can charter a yacht worldwide. You’ll also need an  RYA VHF – SRC Marine Radio certificate to charter a yacht in Croatia and elsewhere.

We sometimes combine students on a Competent Crew and a Day Skipper course. With that, you’ll be able to train how to manage the inexperienced crew!

Although we’re trying to show you the most of our sailing area during the course, safety is crucial in the RYA courses. The exact route of the course will depend primarily on the instructor’s judgement of the weather conditions and the crew’s ability

DEHLER 38 SQ - Blue Eye

Speed meets quality and comfort.

Dehler 38 SQ is the newest model from a famous German shipyard Dehler , traditionally known for their quality built yachts. A "true performance cruiser", says the renowned Sail magazine . That means the boat is fast but has everything needed for comfortable cruising. Another review says Dehler did a great job with this model while "keeping the boat as simple to use and fun".

We needed only one short sail with our Blue Eye to confirm that all these reviews were accurate. And we're sure you'll quickly realise why she's a perfect yacht for learning sailing. She has performance Quantum sails and a sleek, sharp, sporty line, so she sails well even on light wind.

Two very responsive carbon wheels enhance the manoeuvrability and provide a good feel of the boat's movement, even more so because they control only one deep rudder. The stern is spacious and broad, so there's enough room for a swimming platform with an integrated ladder.

The cockpit is spacious, with a fixed foldable table that enables the crew to enjoy their meals and drinks on the deck under the shade of a large bimini top. It also provides enough room for active sailing, and three winches on each side - a rarity in the class - prove the yacht is made to perform. Teak wood covers the cockpit deck, and the rest has a non-skid finish.

BLUE EYE is our training yacht registered for the RYA courses , so you can be sure she has everything needed for safe sailing. Also, a radar and an active radar reflector – which makes the yacht more visible to big ships - enhance her safety. She has the latest B&G chart plotter and instruments.

She has 38 feet, around 11,4 meters. The interior has three roomy double cabins, a cosy saloon, a foldable dining table, a chart table, and a fully equipped kitchen with a sink, stove and a large fridge. There's also a bathroom with a toilet and a shower, and all wastewater goes to a holding tank. Large windows in the saloon and cabins allow natural light below the deck. The shipyard used only fine woods - teak, mahogany and oak - for the furniture, which matched perfectly with the bright upholstery.

Additionally, BLUE EYE has a hot air heating system installed to keep the crew comfortably warm after sailing in spring and autumn. She also has substantial autonomy with a freshwater tank of 295 litres, a fuel tank of 160 litres, and service batteries of 160 Ah, so she stays comfortable even on a more extended cruise.
