Sailing stars in the making shine clear and bright
The Jebel Ali Sailing Club (JASC) provided a glimpse of the future when they hosted the annual Commodore's Cup Sailing Championships at their Mina Seyahi venue last weekend.
The Jebel Ali Sailing Club (JASC) provided a glimpse of the future when they hosted the annual Commodore's Cup Sailing Championships at their Mina Seyahi venue last weekend. It was heartwarming to see a large fleet of children, some of them stars in the making, take to waters and compete in the Topper and Optimist Classes. It did not matter who won, but the passion which the youngsters brought to the event rubbed off on to even the most jaded sailor and made for a thoroughly enjoyable day's sailing. If their performances are anything to go by, the UAE are likely to see many National and World Champions coming their way in the future. There is a large fleet of children now partaking in sailing training at both JASC and DIMC and competing regularly at club level. Sid Ahmed of DIMC feels that concentrating on the youth is very important. It is at this level that an interest and love for the sport is developed. Colin Slowey, Chief Instructor at JASC, says that the club is placing emphasis on Schools and Cadet training and they have a full schedule of water sport instruction taking place at JASC on a daily basis. The Commodore's Cup is an annual event hosted by the Club's Commodore. This year's event assumed added significance with Glyn Kilsby, who has served as head of the Committee for two years, completing his term of office this month. Under his guidance, the club has grown appreciably. From a membership of 320 families it now boasts a roster of 380 families. Approximately 54 sailing craft of various classes started racing at 11 am in heavy winds which saw many boats capsizing and some returning to the harbour. The wind swung around in the afternoon and died down to a gentle breeze as the day progressed. A total of 18 catamarans took part. It was the first time that Dubai has seen the Topcats racing in a club event and the results were not disappointing, for although the Nacra of Dave Holligan/Mark Wright managed to take first place, while the second and third places went to Simon White/Eve Brinsley (Topcat) and Grayden and Kim Thompson (Topcat) respectively. In the cruiser class, Andy Shelley led for an easy win followed by David Worral and Xavier Faugeras. All three of these competitors raced J22 cruisers. The Laser standard and radial classes, always very competitive, produced racing of a very high standard with the winner being Craig Miller, followed by Simon Keel and third place going to Werner Taylor. The two-man dinghy class was won by Daniel Kilsby/Nick Ashenden in a Laser 2 with the team of Colin and Pauline Bodie coming in a close second. Third place went to the Lombards on a Laser Topaz. Racing last Friday in the Topper and Optimist classes took place in the Dubai Marina, which provides an ideal area for children to race in. After consistent sailing in the Topper class by both Ben Kilsby and Ben Butler, Kilsby took first place by just two points. Third place deservedly went to Alexa Soar after months of determination and dedication to sailing. Omar Shahine walked away with top honours in the Optimist fleet after three first places. Mohammed Hareb came second after improving his position in each of the four races. Two good second positions allowed Ahmed Shahine to achieve third place.

SAILING CLUB TO FLOAT TO DH8 MILLION LOCATION
The total revamping of the jumeirah-marina beach front will not affect the landmark jebel ali sailing club as the uae authorities have decided to transplant it to a new posh location within one of the many man made islands coming up in the palms., by v.m. satish (contributor).

Nakheel, the leading property developer which is implementing multibillion construction projects in the area, have offered to pay for the new clubhouse and facilities of the Sailing Club, said a club official. The new club project is estimated to cost Dh8 million. The club relocation is part of the land development in the area. There has been wild speculation about the future of JASC, a landmark icon in the Jumeirah region for almost two and half decades due to the rapid real estate development in the area. Even though real estate prices have escalated and a number of multibillion properties are being developed in the adjacent are, the UAE authorities have been kind enough to preserve this historically important club, which has played an important role in promoting marine sports and sailing in the UAE. "It is a fabulous location. The land work is finished and we expect to move to the new premises by next year. The club premise is a free donation from the UAE government and Nakheel is giving the clubhouse. Work is already in progress to create the peninsula where the club will be relocated," said Sharon Allison of the Club. "It's a fantastic site for a sailing club. From the new clubhouse we will be able to watch our sailors racing, which will be amazing. Nakheel have been truly supportive by first giving us a magnificent site from which to operate and offering to fund the building. It is truly a great result to a lot of hard work and worry," said a club representative. The government gave free land to the club because of its commitment for sailing to the children of Dubai. "The new club is a marvellous development for the club. Dubai is developing fast and we have lot of new people wanting to learn sailing. For years we have been alone in the area. When I joined, it was a very small club. Now there major developments around and Jumeirah is going to be a major venue for marine and water sports in the Middle East," says Sharon. The Palm Island, Dubailand, Lagoon Island and other major water front property developments will transform the face of Jumeirah, giving ample scope for sailing club members to utilise the new water sports infrastructure coming up in the area. "Now there are more sailing facilities and it is easier for people to reach us. A lot more people will be living locally. The Palm Island and Lagoon Island will give the club members ideal conditions for sailing and make it much more interesting. The new elite lifestyle of people who will be living in the Palm and Lagoon demands sailing. In the last month alone, more than 50 new members have joined the club. New business people who come to Dubai are interested in sailing. Since the government has recognised the club by giving it free premises in the Palm, many people who were doubtful about its future are coming back to the club. Now everybody wants to be part of the sailing club. JASC, founded in 1977 by a small group of sailing enthusiasts, is located in Mina Seyaha at the entrance of Dubai Marina on land granted by His Highness Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. Even though the area was an isolated place initially, rapid real estate development has been taking place in the surrounding area. "Many people were skeptical about our future because many major hotel projects are coming up in the Jumeirah area. The club has been functioning from the current premises since 1996," said the spokeswoman. Dubai is a warm city and it is a nice experience to sail. "Our main objective is to teach people to sail. Twelve leading schools and colleges in Dubai send their students for sailing. "From its small beginning the club has grown to become one of the most active sailing clubs in the Gulf with a full racing programme every Friday. The club offers RYA certified sailing, wind surfing, kayak and powerboat courses and provides ideal support for sailors from beginner through to World Championship level. The club's after school programme offers two hours sessions in sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, powerboat, cat sailing and water skiing. "We have strong links with Dubai International Marine Club, and the UAE Marine Federation, the government body for water sports in Dubai and have provided support to help with organization of numerous international sailing events. Jebel Ali Sailing Club plays a vital role with DIMC in promoting Dubai and the UAE as a location for international marine sports.
