2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 Cabriolet Review: Come Sail Away

With the amount of change in the automotive industry, it’s worth considering the last of certain types of cars.

Lamborghini and Ferrari are about to build their last purely-petrol-powered V12s. There’s just one V6-powered, front-drive family sedan left: the Camry . Want a naturally-aspirated V8 four-door sedan? Your choices are either the Lexus IS 500, the Chrysler 300, or the Dodge Charger. Slim pickings.

Consider the convertible. Now refine that brain-based search to exclude two-seaters (Miata, Boxster), pony cars (Mustang, Camaro), or cars where no actual adult can fit in the second row (911, LC). Chop it down further by disqualifying cars with sporting intentions.

What you’re left with is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 Cabriolet. This mid-sizer has no direct competitors, and almost certainly sells in tiny numbers. It’s also a consummate cruiser for you and three friends, and despite some inherent flaws, should be celebrated for just that.

What’s new?

The entire E-Class family saw a round of updates for 2021, from sedan, to coupe, to wagon , and this here convertible. In typical Merc fashion, the exterior changes are subtle: tweaked headlight shapes, a switch from a “grin” to a “frown” grille shape, and a smattering of new color options. Overall this is still a smooth shape, elegant and simple in a way that’s remarkably rare in today’s over-styled scene. The folks in Stuttgart aren’t reinventing the wheel here.

They did ditch the old turbocharged V6, though. Now there’s the delightful inline-six, the same one AutoGuide praised in the E450 All-Terrain wagon earlier this year. Horsepower and torque are up, to 362 and 369, respectively, which is all fine and dandy. There’s also a mild-hybrid system at play, which tosses its own 21 hp and 184 lb-ft into the pot for short bursts.

Inside, not much has changed, with a new steering wheel being the main attraction—or annoyance (more on that later). The cloth lid can disappear in a little less than 20 seconds, and it can be operated at speeds up to 30 mph (50 km/h). There is the small matter of the gorgeous interior spec this tester comes with, though.

This, dear friends, is Macchiato Beige and Yacht Blue, but we can just shorten it down to The Perfect Spec. With the matching dark blue fabric top, this particular Silver Arrow oozes class. I’m sure it’d look right at home cruising along a winding road in the south of France. But it’s mid-autumn in Canada, which means a week that encompasses both shorts-friendly weather and the hint of snow.

Top-up, the Merc is a well-insulated cocoon, protecting occupants from the outside world. More of the commotion does make it inside compared to a tin-top—particularly around the C-pillars—but it’s a far cry from what you’d call noisy. Visibility is naturally worse too, though the rear window is larger than most.

I’m not going to let plummeting mercury get in the way of a good cruise, though. As much as possible, the E450 operates al fresco , with its various methods of heating employed depending on the situation. The heated steering wheel is only fine, but the seats toast up nicely. Airscarf is delightfully OTT, in-headrest vents keeping napes warm. Turbulence is kept at bay with the combination of a powered rear deflector, and a deployable spoiler at the top of the windshield. Up to highway speeds, conversations are possible without yelling. Your hair may fare worse.

The interior is standard modern Merc: if it ain’t broke and all that. A quartet of of aero-inspired vents dominate the center of the dashboard, with primary climate controls just below. Every switch has a pleasant, consistent action, and fit and finish is superb. The front seats are supremely comfortable, built for comfort over speed. Rear-seat passengers are well taken care of too, though it still is a tight fit. I installed two family members back there, and I think the hour drive was about as much as I’d want to submit any adults to with the top up.

Mercedes’ MBUX remains one of the best infotainment systems on the market, all because the brand believes in the importance of options. Sure, driver or passenger can poke and swipe at the big 12.3-inch screen for everything they need. There’s also the rotary dial-slash-mouse contraption on the center console.

As the driver, my preferred input method is the little touchpad on the upper right spoke of the steering wheel. This used to be a flush, contrasting material, and it was better for it. The new setup is harder to be accurate with, requiring multiple “bites” to get where you want to go. The left pad, used for the other 12.3-inch screen ahead of the driver, is the same story.

Similarly, the touch-sensitive controls for the volume and adaptive cruise control feel a step too far. Continuously tapping seems the best option.

The rest of the MBUX experience is still great. The menus are clear and easy to navigate. Response times are near-instant. The graphics are crisp. It’s just the one input method that feels like a step back.

This tester comes with the up-level driver assist package ($1,700 / $2,700 CAD). While it still stings that much of this optional tech is standard on mainstream models, there’s no arguing with how well it all works. For instance, the adaptive cruise control is very smooth when altering its speed, and flicking the indicator has it changing lanes flawlessly. It also uses navigation info to automatically adjust speeds for upcoming corners.

Prod the engine start button and the creamy inline-six awakes up ahead. You know because the digital dials tell you as much; otherwise, there’s little sonic or vibratory hints. Even just a bit of throttle reveals a wave of torque, as the six cylinders work in concert with the EQ Boost system, essentially eliminating turbo lag. Feed in more throttle and the combustion engine drops the shy routine, with a clean, crisp exhaust note. Truth be told, it’s not necessary to rev the E450 high, both because it feels distinctly out of character and because it puts in its best work in the mid-range. Still, a 5.2-second dash to 62 mph (100 km/h) ain’t nothing to sneer at.

Mercedes’ nine-speed auto is the right match for the engine, with smooth, quick shifts on its own. It responds well enough to the wheel-mounted pedals, but just like hunting the redline, using them feels so gauche. Same goes for the driving modes: this is a heavy car, with the 4MATIC AWD gubbins underneath and the assorted structural reinforcements necessary for droptop duty. So while the engine and transmission perk up in Sport mode, it never feels like the E has its heart set on sniffing out apexes. The brake pedal is firm and positive, as well.

The suspension contributes to this wafting feel. The E Cab is soft, allowing it to glide over rough roads even on the upsized 20-inch wheels. Rougher tarmac can cause some pogoing from back to front, but the structure always feels stiff. Larger bumps do elicit angry noises from the wheel arches and upset the in-cabin equilibrium. Perhaps the optional air suspension would smooth things further still.

Steering effort and feedback are both light, regardless of drive mode. It’s not that the E isn’t interested in having fun; it’s just more interested in making sure you’re not stressed. About a single thing.

You won’t be fussing over fuel usage, that’s for sure. Even with 362 hp and a curb weight to rival a small condo, the E450 Cabriolet is rated at 25 mpg combined (9.3 L/100 km). I saw it top 30 mpg (7.8 L/100 km) on the highway.

What’s the competition?

Allow me to make it easy: nothing. Not directly, anyway.

Okay, you could look at the slightly smaller BMW M440i Cabriolet. It’s the tourer of that family, but it’s still distinctly sharper in ride and handling than the cruise-friendly Merc. Want even more of an edge? BMW will sell you an M4 droptop, complete with AWD. There’s the Audi S5 too, but same story: smaller, more affordable, more overtly sporty.

Ah yes, affordability. I hope you’re not looking for any here. The E450 Cabriolet starts from $75,500, including destination ($88,900 CAD, before freight). Even this lightly-optioned example adds another $10,000 to the bottom line, bringing it up to $85,470 (around $102,000 CAD). There’s just not much at this price point that offers the same mix of space, grace, and pace. Even the BMW 8 Series convertible starts a further 10 grand richer.

Mercedes offers a sportier droptop E53, but I’d argue that’s a contradictory model. Want a sporty Merc? Get the coupe, or a 63 model.

Verdict: 2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 Cabriolet Review

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 Cabriolet surprised me. It’s a fixer: the Cab smoothes over any problems or stress points that may arise, letting the driver soak up the scenery.

It remains a niche offering, and not a cheap one, either. What the E450 Cab offers is a very particular set of skills, ones no other car on the market offers in this exact mix. If your tastes align, there’s nothing else that will do.

The E53 is the AMG version of Merc’s mid-sizer. It uses the same basic 3.0-liter engine, but with more power. The chassis is also tuned for more athletic handling..

2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ Revealed, Offers up to 603 HP

The AMG sedan will come in plug-in-hybrid form, with substantial electric range. It's expected in the U.S. in late 2024.

• In the 2025 Mercedes-AMG E53, a 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder and electric motor produce 576 horsepower.
• A sizable 21.2-kWh battery targets 62 miles of EV range, but that's under the generous European WLTP.

We have grown used to the idea of cars getting more powerful over successive generations, but electrification has dramatically increased this trend. The last Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan in the U.S. boasted an entirely respectable 429 horsepower from its turbocharged six-cylinder engine. The new 2025 version will use a plug-in-hybrid powertrain to give a significantly enhanced 576 horsepower—or 603 hp when using the optional Race Start mode. Those figures mean the new E53 makes more power than the previous-generation Mercedes-AMG E63 S . This is the sort of inflation we can all get behind.

The new E53 Hybrid uses the same engine as the GLE53 Hybrid we told you about last October, but it gains a more powerful electric motor. The E53's 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight-six makes a peak of 443 horsepower and works in conjunction with an electric motor that sits between it and the nine-speed transmission within the gearbox housing. It's capable of delivering up to 161 horsepower and 352 pound-feet by itself, with a short-term power overboost in the Race Start mode that comes as part of the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package. The combined torque peak is quoted at 553 pound-feet. AMG claims a 3.8-second zero-to-62-mph time for the E53 Hybrid sedan in Race Start, and two-tenths slower without it. We managed to reach 60 mph in four seconds flat in the previous E53 Coupe and can safely predict the new car will improve on its official figures.

Electrical power comes from a 21.2-kWh 400-volt battery pack located under the rear floor, which is large enough to deliver meaningful electrical range. In Europe, AMG says it is targeting a 62-mile (or 100-km) WLTP rating, which will unlock EV tax benefits for owners in various countries. EPA numbers will certainly be less than that, but the E53 Hybrid should still be able to deliver more than 40 miles of EV range, and it can drive at up to 87 mph under electrical power. Top speed is quoted in Europe as 155 mph for the regular car, 174 mph with the Dynamic Plus pack.

The E53 Hybrid will also be easier to recharge than most plug-ins tend to be, with the option of 60-kW DC fast-charging that will allow the battery's state of charge to be taken from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 20 minutes. Even without specifying the DC charger, the onboard AC charger works at up to a respectable 11 kW. The hybrid system has brought two new driving modes, Electric, which runs the car as an EV until the battery depletes, and Battery Hold, which will maintain charge level for later deployment. When driving electrically, the E53 Hybrid has a haptic throttle pedal that will stiffen to indicate the point at which maximum performance is being delivered; pushing beyond that will start the engine and switch to hybrid operation.

While the E53 Hybrid does get to look more muscular than the standard E-class, plenty of visual headroom is still being left for the E63 that we confidently expect to follow. The E53 gets a new radiator grille featuring AMG's familiar vertical strakes and with an illuminated surround, a deeper front bumper, and widened front fenders (0.4 inch broader on each side). Unfortunately, the fenders also get what looked to be vents set into the trailing edge, but which turned out to be blanks on closer inspection. The mesh for the smaller pseudo-vents on the rear bumper is also contoured rather than real. At the rear are quad tailpipes, a new spoiler on the trunklid, and an E53 badge finished in red indicating that the engine is hybridized.

Interior changes are subtle; beyond discreet AMG branding at the base of the steering wheel and new graphics for the instrument panel, the E53 feels little changed from any other highly equipped E-class . European buyers will be able to choose between the Superscreen, which adds a passenger's-side monitor to the UX system, or a standard configuration with an open-pore gray ash timber panel featuring the innovation of backlighting. However, the U.S. spec hasn't been finalized, and it is possible the Superscreen will be standard here.

The AMG still uses a steering column gear selector wand rather than reverting to a separate shifter on the center console as AMG models did until recently. The gearchange paddles behind the steering wheel now have a double function. In the punchier dynamic modes they will indeed offer a driver the change to select ratios, but when running electrically they will vary the levels of regenerative braking. AMG says the most aggressive of these will function as a one-pedal mode.

Hardware improvements for the E53 include double-valve active dampers able to separately adjust rebound and compression. Rear-wheel steering will also be standard, and the body shell gets additional reinforcement to improve stiffness. These changes include a crossbrace between the front strut towers and additional bracing for the rear axle mounts. Four-pot brake calipers gripping 14.5-inch-diameter vented front discs will be standard, with that optional Dynamic Plus upgrading those to six-pot calipers and bigger 15.3-inch rotors.

Deliveries to the U.S. won't begin until the third quarter of 2024, and we don't have pricing yet. AMG says that in Europe the new E53 Hybrid is only modestly more expensive than the old version, so we can hope that holds true when it gets to us as well. For reference, the previous E53 sedan was $82,450 in 2022.

Bold and muscular yet flowing, the AMG Line enhances the E-Class Cabriolet with aggressively contoured AMG lower bodywork. Enhancing both aesthetics and aerodynamics, the deep front apron features large intakes and a silver chrome lower accent (gloss black with the Night Package). Flared side sills bridge the wheel arches and visually hug the road, while the rear valance outlines the tailpipes and central diffuser insert with a chrome or gloss black accent.

Radiating from the iconic Star in the reshaped grille is a series of intricate hexagonal "pins," each one individually shaped by the car's designer to optimize both aesthetics and airflow. Each pin is tipped in chrome for a look that's positively captivating. The single central crossbar is finished in chrome and set into a gloss black surround.

Interior enhancements with the AMG Line include sporty brushed metal pedals and color-keyed AMG floor mats underfoot. Further details include a more advanced flat-bottom sport steering wheel and black fabric headliner.

Larger perforated side grips and a racing-inspired flat-bottom design bring out the enthusiast in any driver. Warmth & Comfort Package

An added enhancement to the available heated front seats, this rapid-warming feature quickly replaces the chill of a cold day or evening with nearly instant heating of the seat. The feature automatically switches to the normal heating settings as soon as the desired temperature is reached.

Providing the same soothing benefits as heated seats to your arms and elbows, via the same controls, electric heating warms the front door armrests and the front center armrest.

Heating elements beneath the Nappa leather trim of the steering wheel rapidly take the chill out of your hands on a cold morning. After a few minutes, the heating level is automatically reduced to maintain lasting comfort.

Air Balance Package

The Air Balance system teams activated charcoal filtration with an ionizer that uses an electrical charge to create the same fresh-air sensation you experience after a summer storm. Airborne impurities and odors are virtually eliminated from the cabin to provide air quality that's more enjoyable and healthier, especially for those with asthma or allergies.

Part of the Air Balance system, a fragrance atomizer offers an extra dimension of cabin ambience. Featuring an elegant, LED-backlit vial in the glovebox and its own ductwork, any of several distinctive yet subtle aromas is gently atomized into the cabin at periodic intervals, yet the scent won't linger on cabin surfaces or clothing. The vial is easily replaced when you'd like to change scents.

Driver Assistance Package

A Mercedes-Benz innovation, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® cruise control uses radar-based technology to adapt your set speed in response to the flow of traffic ahead. If traffic slows down, it can reduce your speed automatically until your path clears. If the vehicle ahead slows to a stop, it can brake to a full halt. When traffic moves, you can resume with just a tap of the accelerator or cruise control resume button, or it can resume automatically if the stop is under three seconds.

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is not a substitute for active driving involvement. It does not adapt cruising speed in response to stationary objects, nor does it predict the curvature and lane layout of the road ahead or the movement of vehicles ahead. It is the driver's responsibility at all times to be attentive to posted speed limits, traffic and road conditions, and to provide the steering, braking and other driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle. Drivers are cautioned not to wait for the system's alerts before braking, as that may not afford sufficient time and distance to brake safely. Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake maintenance, and tire and road conditions. See Operator's Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings. \r\n

Active Steering Assist can be engaged whenever you're using DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control. Using cameras and other sensors to detect lane markings, guardrails and other vehicles, Active Steering Assist can help the driver keep the vehicle centered in its lane while cruising, even in gentle curves. When lane markings aren't visible, it can even follow the vehicle ahead.

Active Steering Assist requires driver to hold steering wheel and be ready to steer vehicle at any time. It may not recognize lane markings, road features, and/or other vehicles in some lighting, weather and road conditions. It is the driver's responsibility at all times to be attentive to traffic and road conditions, and to provide the steering, braking and other driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle.

This breakthrough system can instantly activate if you initiate an evasive maneuver while the vehicle's sensors detect an impending risk of collision with a pedestrian in your path. The system can provide a calculated steering force to assist you in executing the move, then can help ease the straightening of the vehicle in the adjacent lane after the maneuver.

System cannot overcome the laws of physics, nor is it a substitute for being attentive to driving, traffic and conditions. The system cannot recognize or predict every movement of vehicles and pedestrians in your path. Please always wear your seat belt. Driver's deliberate steering inputs are required to initiate the system's action, and can override its intervention at any time. See Operator's Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

At most driving speeds, radar technology can help sense when a vehicle enters the blind-spot area on either side of you, and alert you by illuminating an icon in the appropriate side mirror. If you activate a turn signal while a vehicle is detected, it can sound a warning tone and flash the mirror icon. And if you begin to change lanes, advanced active technology can help guide the car back by selectively braking individual wheels.

Active Blind Spot Assist may not be sufficient to avoid all accidents involving vehicles in your blind spot and cannot predict the movement of other vehicles. It should not be used as a substitute for driver awareness and checking of surrounding traffic conditions. See Operator's Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

With technology to monitor ordinary road markings above a certain driving speed, Active Lane Keeping Assist can help detect unintended drifting off-course, and alert you by vibrating the steering wheel. If you continue to drift, it can selectively brake individual wheels to help guide the car back into its lane. Enhancements help it to detect and alert you to overtaking vehicles, vehicles you would need to overtake if you change lanes, and even oncoming traffic in the adjacent lane.

Driving while drowsy or distracted is dangerous and must be avoided. Active Lane Keeping Assist cannot be relied on to avoid an accident or serious injury. It may not be sufficient to detect a fatigued, distracted or inattentive driver, and cannot override the laws of physics. When cruising with DISTRONIC® engaged, this innovation can allow the driver to execute a lane change simply by activating a turn signal for a sufficient number of seconds. The system is designed to sense when you're traveling on a multilane highway, and whether the area across the dashed lane marking is clear for a lane-change, then precisely steer into the adjacent lane.

Active Lane Change Assist is not a substitute for active driving involvement. It estimates but does not predict the curvature and lane layout of the road ahead or the movement of vehicles ahead. It is the driver's responsibility at all times to be attentive to traffic and road conditions, and to provide the driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle. System may not detect some objects, obstacles or vehicles in the area into which the vehicle would move. See Operator's Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings. \n 

At certain in-town driving speeds, radar and advanced cameras can scan the area ahead of the vehicle to help detect a potential collision with vehicles approaching or crossing from either side of an intersection ahead, or with a pedestrian in the car's path. When the driver responds to the system's alert by braking, it can precisely apply brake force to help prevent such an accident or help reduce its severity. If it senses a pedestrian in your path, the system can automatically apply the brakes.

System may not be sufficient to avoid an accident. It cannot always recognize or predict the presence or every movement of vehicles and pedestrians in your path. It is the driver's responsibility at all times to be attentive to traffic and road conditions, and to provide the steering, braking and other driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle. While Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® provides an extraordinary degree of driving ease when cruising, the driver must still remain able to intervene at any time. For this reason, if innovative capacitive touch technology detects the driver's hands off the steering wheel for a prolonged period, it can provide both visual and audible alerts. If the driver does not respond, Active Emergency Stop Assist can reduce the vehicle speed in stages, all the way to a stop, unless the driver resumes control of the vehicle.

It is the driver's responsibility at all times to be attentive to traffic and road conditions, and to provide the steering, braking and other driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle. Active Emergency Stop Assist may stop the vehicle in travel lanes and activate the hazard flashers if the driver does not respond to its alerts. Active Speed Limit Assist can detect posted speed-limit signs and automatically adapt your cruising speed accordingly. As you first engage DISTRONIC on a drive, the system can also set your cruising speed to match the posted speed with just a single tap of the cruise-control set button.

Active Speed Limit Assist is not a substitute for driver awareness to posted speed limits, recent or temporary changes to roadways, and other conditions. Driver is responsible for safely operating vehicle in accordance with local traffic laws and driving conditions.

An enhancement to the groundbreaking PRE-SAFE® system can help protect the occupants in a rear-end collision. A radar sensor in the rear bumper can help detect an impending impact, and engage the reversible seat-belt tensioners of PRE-SAFE to better prepare the front-seat occupants and their restraint systems. It can also firmly apply and hold the brakes if the vehicle is stationary, to help reduce peak loads on all occupants as well as the risk of a secondary collision.

System cannot prevent a collision, and does not alert the driver of an impending collision or system activation. It does not intervene if vehicle is backing up, and does not apply the brakes if the vehicle is moving or if Active Parking Assist is operating. \n

MB Navigation and the advanced driver assistance suite can collaborate to make using DISTRONIC cruise control even easier. Using the map database, the system can automatically slow down in anticipation of curves, traffic circles, even tollbooths and highway interchanges, then resume up to the posted speed limit afterwards. The system can also slow down automatically when you signal for a highway exit, to help prepare you for stopping the car as needed.

Driver is responsible for safely slowing and/or stopping vehicle at intersections, and for giving right-of-way to other drivers. System is not a substitute for driver awareness to posted speed limits, recent or temporary changes to roadways, and other conditions. Maps do not cover all areas or all routes within an area, may require periodic updating, and may not reflect recent or temporary changes to roadways. Driver is responsible for safely operating vehicle in accordance with local traffic laws and driving conditions.

When using Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® cruise control in stop-and-go traffic, the vehicle can normally resume automatically when traffic moves if the pause is less than three seconds. This innovative enhancement can help sense some traffic conditions that require longer pauses, and extend this interval to up to one minute, to make driving in traffic easier and less stressful. If the pause is longer, the driver need only tap the resume button or accelerator pedal to proceed.
