Northern 25

Northern 25 is a 25 ′ 3 ″ / 7.7 m monohull sailboat designed by Philip Rhodes and built by Northern Yachts Ltd. starting in 1970.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Northern 25

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Northern 25 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.22 - 1.32 meter (4.00 - 4.30 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Northern 25 is 1.90, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.9 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Northern 25 is about 97 kg/cm, alternatively 548 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 97 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 548 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 16m 2 (172 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

About the northern 25  .

The Northern 25 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fibreglass, with wood trim and anodized spars. It has a masthead sloop rig, a spooned raked stem, a reverse transom, a skeg-mounted rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed fin keel. It displaces 5,100 lb (2,313 kg) and carries 2,300 lb (1,043 kg) of ballast. The boat has a draft of 4.00 ft (1.22 m) with the standard keel fitted. Originally designed for an outboard motor, early trials indicated that the lazarette would flood when under way, due to the engine location. Only two boats were delivered without inboard engines and production models were generally fitted with Vire 7.5 hp (6 kW) inboard gasoline engine. The design originally incorporated boom roller reefing, but many were later modified to eliminate this feature, due to sail wear. The design has a PHRF racing average handicap of 222 with a high of 216 and low of 234. It has a hull speed of 5.88 kn (10.89 km/h).

or . I believe both are good but looking for opinions on one vs the other (sail-ability, comfort, etc). Tanzer community seems much bigger and more active which is a plus. Northern has a very comfortable arrangement and room. Also which one of these would be most capable for solo sail? Thanks in advance

of it and more information on the boat's etc. There were around 250 made in different configurations. Mine has a 110 with a MD5A . Others had inboards or just setups. Last I had to change the - a previous owner didn't drain the out of the lower unit in the Fall. had managed to get into the which froze over the and cracked the housing. Luckily I managed to find another identical drive unit.

Working on the and saildrive required long hours in the lockers, of the counter etc. Access is very difficult hence I am considering the pros and cons of making a in the floor.

I often sail solo and so have added a . It is a pleasure to sail even in strong winds.

Northern 25' info?

Thanks to jimq26 in the Grampian Forum I was able to figure out what model of boat this is. Does anyone have any information or links to where I can educate myself on the Northern 25, as I am close to owning one...after a succesful survey of course. Not sure if it is a MK II, or MK III.

Northern 25 The Northern 25 is a Philip Rhodes design that was originally built as the O'Day Outlaw. When O'Day closed its Canadian plant a boat builder in Ajax, Ontario acquired the moulds. He slightly modified the vessel - for the better -and called it the Northern 25. About 250 of these craft were built by Northern Yacht Builders throughout the 70's and into the early 80's. The same firm also produced the Northern Quarter Ton, the S&S designed Northern 29, as well as the Northern 37. All were heavily built, solid glass hulls. Decks were cored. The Northern 25 appeared in three itirations. In the Mark 1 the cap shrouds and single lower shrouds attach to the same chain plate. This model also features a "pop top". The Mark 2 is the classic model. The cabin top is fixed to give more or less standing headroom at the foot of the companionway steps. Single cap shrouds and fore and aft lowers are led to individual chain plates. Design displacement of both the 1 & 2 is the same - 4,800# The Mark 3 has slightly higher freeboard and so there is 6'2" headroom throughout the cabin. Displacement is approximately 5,200#. All three could be had with either a settee layout or in a dinette configuration. Storage room is more than adequate. The boats are good in heavy weather, but are also surprisingly fast in light air. Their best turn of speed is when they are sailed slightly off the wind. Don't get into a pointing match with a more modern boat. That being said, they do claw to weather. The builder is still alive and he takes delight in going out to do surveys for prospective buyers - provided they are within an hour's drive or so of Frenchman's Bay where he operates a marina.

Thanks! Thanks for all that info, that is very helpful. The image here, just to confirm this is a Northern 25 MKII??

Eight souls rescued from wayward boat on Beaufort-area sea island. Are tides to blame?

Two vessels have run aground on Fripp and Hunting Islands in northern Beaufort County in July. One required a complicated Coast Guard rescue of 7 people and a dog — including two local rescue crew members. In the second case, a grounded sailboat remains on Hunting Island State Park.

The beached boats prompted a reminder from authorities for boaters to be mindful of coastal South Carolina’s huge tidal shifts, which can quickly turn smooth sailing into a shipwreck.

Lt. Cmdr. Carl Luxhoj, with Coast Guard Air Station Savannah, warned boaters of the unique conditions off the coast. “Due to the impressive range of tides in the Lowcountry region, we recommend all mariners check tides and currents before going out on the water.”

With one of the highest tidal ranges on the East Coast, and an average height of 8.5 feet between high and low tide, Beaufort County’s big tidal flow has been compared to a toilet with a powerful flush. But while that tidal power keeps area waters healthy and clean, it can also overwhelm uninitiated boaters .

Rescue effort needed

A rescue crew with Coast Guard Air Station Savannah responded to a vessel that ran aground on Fripp Island, just to the south of Hunting Island, on Sunday. Arriving in a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, the crew hoisted five people and a dog from the 23-foot boat — in addition to two members from the Beaufort County Marine Rescue.

The local rescue unit had launched an airboat crew to assist the stranded boat, but the rescue boat’s engine quit upon their arrival.

The rescue turned out to be complex because it required so many trips, said Luxhoj. “Our crew did a great job of managing aircraft weight and power margin to conduct the hoists.”

This Fripp Island rescue had a happy ending, with crew members with the Beaufort County Marine Rescue recovering its airboat and the boat that ran aground. Those rescued were taken to Beaufort Executive Airport. No injuries were reported.

Boneyard beach claims another vessel

In the second case, a sailboat was reported July 12 on the south end of a popular stretch known as Little Hunting Island Boneyard Beach, at Hunting Island State Park, according to the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. The sailboat was still on its shores as of Thursday, surprising visitors and prompting some complaints about its intrusion on the beloved beach marked with gnarly dead trees done in by erosion at the barrier island 15 miles east of Beaufort.

“Now ... There’s something you don’t see everyday,” Joe Zieran said on Facebook. “Shipwrecked sailboat on boneyard beach, Hunting Island, SC. “I hope it can be recovered and returned to it’s rightful owners.”

Zieran encountered the beached sailboat while hiking on Boneyard Beach last Thursday and was quick to take photographs that he shared on social media. He estimates the vessel to be to 20 to 25 feet long.

Jessica LeNeve Lindler also saw the boat Saturday when several young adults appeared playing around on it and jumping into the ocean.

Sam Queen, a SCPRT spokesperson, said the boat went off course and washed ashore and got stuck. No injuries were reported. “We’ve been in communication with the owner and SC Department of Natural Resources to get it removed, which we hope happens soon,” Queen said.

Why Northern Long-eared bats delayed the multi-million dollar expansion of a Henrico County park

northern 25 sailboat data

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — It’s a mixture of mangled tree stumps and branches, underbrush and assorted other plant life right now.

But by next fall, an undeveloped 73-acre site at Glover Park in Glen Allen will be home to two full-size turf baseball fields, a 1.75-acre turf dog park, a 5k trail, two playgrounds, two new turf multipurpose fields, a restroom complex, shade shelters and a lot more parking, among other amenities. Work on the long-awaited second phase of the park – involving acreage located behind the park’s four existing multipurpose fields and two sand volleyball courts – is now underway, following a series of delays that spanned nearly three years. Amid Talk of Border Chaos, Crossings Have Sharply Declined

Former President Donald J. Trump and the Texas governor are calling for a “secure border.” But actions by Mexico and President Biden have led to a period of relative calm.

People walk along a stretch of fence topped with concertina wire with a much larger wall in the background.

By Miriam Jordan and J. David Goodman

Miriam Jordan covers immigration and J. David Goodman has reported on border operations in Texas since 2021.

The soaring number of unlawful entries at the southern border was always going be a central part of the 2024 presidential campaign.

On the campaign trail, former President Donald J. Trump has been showcasing a chart showing a rising mountain of migrant encounters at the border under President Biden. At the Republican National Convention, Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas got big cheers for his vow to continue busing migrants to liberal cities.

But amid the heightened rhetoric, the reality on the ground has recently changed.

There were 83,000 apprehensions of migrants last month, according to official data, down significantly from 117,000 in May. The June numbers represented the lowest monthly total since January 2021, and a significant drop from the record 250,000 recorded in December last year.

The decline has continued into July. The daily average of encounters at the border in the past week was under 1,900 as of Monday , according to a senior U.S. Customs and Border Protection official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal statistics.

At that pace, there could be about 60,000 crossings in July, similar to numbers seen at the end of the Trump administration. Here’s the latest on what’s happening at the border.

President Biden’s new policies reduced crossings. Mexico helped too.

Most migrants surrender to the U.S. Border Patrol after crossing unlawfully into the country and are then apprehended by agents. More than 2.4 million people were encountered by border authorities in fiscal 2023, a record.

Earlier this year, a bipartisan deal to tighten the border collapsed in the Senate after Mr. Trump prevailed upon Republican lawmakers to withdraw their support. That bill would have restricted asylum and set limits on the number of migrants admitted into the country.

Around that time, Mexico began intercepting migrants en route to the border, and unlawful entries began to drop in March.

They declined further after Mr. Biden, in the absence of action by Congress, issued an executive order in June that closed the border to migrants once the number of apprehensions reaches a certain number. The order empowered officials to swiftly deport those who cannot prove at the border that their lives would be endangered if they were returned to their countries.

The president invoked the same section of the Immigration and Nationality Act that Mr. Trump used to justify restrictions on asylum when he was in office.

Deportations have increased significantly to Latin America, and removal flights have also started to China. But many migrants come from countries that do not have diplomatic ties with the United States or that refuse to take back their nationals . They cannot be immediately flown out of the country, an obstacle that a Trump administration would also face.

Because the Biden administration has had to rely on his executive authority to implement immigration policies, another president can revoke them. Mr. Trump has pledged to do so.

Mr. Trump has also vowed to stop the “invasion” and to carry out mass deportations.

Texas crossings declined. Those in Arizona and California rose.

The southern border extends nearly 2,000 miles between the United States and Mexico, with 1,254 miles in one state: Texas.

For two years, Mr. Abbott has tested the limits of his power over immigration, deploying National Guard troops to the border, lining parts of the Rio Grande with concertina wire and passing laws that challenge the central role of the federal government in immigration enforcement. Other Republican-led states, like Oklahoma, Georgia and Iowa, have passed similar laws. Like the Texas law, most have already been blocked by the courts.

The slowdown in border crossings has been particularly evident in Texas. Many former hot spots, like Eagle Pass, have grown relatively quiet, as migrants increasingly cross further west, in Arizona and California.

In June, more people crossed into the Tucson area alone than into what had previously been the top crossing areas around El Paso and Eagle Pass, Texas, combined.

Mr. Abbott has claimed credit for the shift , though federal officials have attributed it mainly to actions in Mexico.

Texas has continued to bus migrants from the border to Democratic-run cities, but far fewer of the buses are running now. Almost all leave from El Paso, which borders New Mexico.

Hamed Aleaziz contributed reporting.

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).

The Northern 25 is a 25.25ft masthead sloop designed by Philip Rhodes and built in fiberglass by Northern Yachts Ltd. (CAN) since 1970. The Northern 25 is a heavy sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is very stable / stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser.

  6. Review of Northern 25

The Northern 25 is equipped with a finn keel. The finn keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.22 - 1.32 meter (4.00 - 4.30 ft) dependent on the load.
