1976 Rival 32 Melos is a 1976 Rival 32, a boat well known for her seakeeping ability. Her current owner (author of "Safety Preparations for Cruising") singlehanded her across the Atlantic in 1987, leaving the UK and sailing to Spain, Portugal, the Canaries, and on to the Caribbean to explore for a few years. She is built of hand laid solid fiberglass in both hull and deck. Melos has full skeg protection for the rudder and a split underbody giving her both directional stability and maneuverability. History of Rival

Rival Yachts, a highly esteemed brand in the boat manufacturing industry, began its storied journey in the early 1960s in England. The company was an ambitious endeavour initiated by three experienced seamen - Peter Brett, Dick Stratton and Mike Slack. Brett was the mastermind behind the design of their innovative crafts, and his passion for combining performance with comfort resulted in the Rival 31, the first boat launched in 1967. Boasting extraordinary qualities for an ocean cruiser, the Rival 31 received widespread recognition and admiration, effectively setting the tone for the company's future creations. Persisting with their focus on sturdy, sea-kindly cruising yachts, Rival later introduced the 32, 34, 36 and the 41, with the Rival 38 marking a significant change in their design approach. Their boats' overall craftsmanship and durability even led to several Rival yachts successfully participating in circumnavigations and transatlantic races. The company's primary manufacturing hub was based out of Southampton but later operations were moved to Burnham-on-Crouch for a period in the late 1970s.Over time, the management of Rival Yachts has changed hands a few times. The brand is currently managed by Bowman Yachts as part of its portfolio. Bowman Yachts, also known for its reputable marine craft, is now based in Emsworth, Hampshire. The continued production of Rival Yachts, especially the larger Bowman models, is a testament to the lasting value and legacy of the Rival brand. Despite the challenges met by the marine industry in recent years, Rival's unwavering commitment to its founding principles of durability and seaworthiness has cemented its place in yachting history.

1972 Rival 32 for sale in Kent This Rival 32 is in need of a full restoration as can be seen from the photos. The Rival 32 is a classic sailing yacht that is still recognised today as a benchmark in yacht design. Capable of extended cruising in comfort and easily sailed single handed. It is practical and has spacious accommodation below decks offering berths up to 6 adults. All sails, spars and cushions have been stored in a garage and not currently onboard. 

Accommodation

The  Rival 32  yacht can sleep 5/6 persons with ease. Along with the port settee the saloon table can be used to create a double berth if required. There are two singles in the fore cabin, a further single in the saloon and a sizeable pilot berth at the chart table.

The saloon is entered via the companionway. The engine housing acts as steps and takes you into a saloon with 6ft of headroom. To starboard is the navigation area with forward facing chart table, chart storage and chart reading light and navigation aids.

To port is the galley with cold manual pumped water, stainless steel sink, oven and ice box. The ice box can easily be converted to a fridge if desired. Moving forward through a half bulkhead is the saloon seating/dining area covered in brown drylon upholstery with plentiful locker and cupboard storage, saloon table and settees/berth port and starboard. Forward of the saloon bulkhead and to port is the heads compartment with privacy door. Sea toilet and wash basin.  Opposite is a hanging locker and in the bow are two further single berths.

We are pleased to offer for sale this Rival 32 which has been in the same ownership for over 31 years. Built c.1976, this is a much-loved yacht which has benefited from many upgrades over the years including a new Yanmar 3GM30 engine (2001), new standing rigging wires (2013-14) and all interior woodwork has been replaced with teak!

Some history from the vendor:

The engine was new in 2001 and at the same time it had a new shaft and propeller fitted. The engine has been professionally serviced every year and it had a major service in 2022. The running hours as estimated by the vendor are 750. The cutlass bearing was replaced in 2022 and the stern glad was replaced in 2020.

The hull was stripped back, and epoxy coated in 1998 (5 coats) (no trace of osmosis) and again in 2014 (2 coats), except the keel. Also done in 2014, the rudder was removed, bearing checked and all was okay. The hull and keel are made from one single moulding, therefore there are no keel bolts. The mast is sleeved at the base – which was welded and re-anodised in 2004. The spreaders fitting was re-bushed in 2004 also.

All seacocks were replaced in 1998 with Blakes and they have been stripped and greased annually since. The heads outlet and cockpit drain were replaced again in 2019. The engine water inlet was removed from the hull, cleaned, and replaced in 2021. The heads pump was serviced in 2019 and all hoses were replaced. It also had a new diaphragm fitted. The freshwater pump was fitted in 2009 and the filter is replaced every year (last replaced in June 2022).

The Rival 32 is a classic sailing yacht designed by Peter Brett. Introduced in the 1970s, Rivals travel far and wide and are known for their seaworthiness and cruising capabilities.

She features a moderate displacement hull, a comfortable interior layout with sleeping for 5. Rivals are renowned for their reliable sail plan for both offshore and coastal sailing.

This particular model is from 1975 and has stood the test of time well. She has a really nice interior and layout with a bright saloon and sociable seating plan.

When you step on board it is obvious that she is solidly built and a serious boat. She’s a real classic and a lot of boat for the money.

Construction

The Rival 32 was designed by Peter Brett in around 1971, all the 200 hulls produced being moulded by Marine Construction (Woolston) Ltd., many being fitted out by Southern Boatbuilding. The design was a longer counter sterned development of the 1967 designed Rival 31, and later evolved into the better-known Rival 34 - although actually more Rival 32s than 34s were built. Known as a solid traditional cruiser, with longish fin keel and skeg hung rudder. Many Rivals have made long ocean passages.

Accommodation

The saloon has the trademark Rival "keyhole" bulkhead leading through from the galley and chart table to the saloon. The very traditional layout has the chart table to starboard, with a quarter berth aft of it, the end of the berth forming the chart table seat. The saloon table drops to form a double berth to port, with a single convertible settee/pipe cot to starboard. Forward is the heads compartment, with hanging locker opposite, and then the forecabin, with vee-berth convertible to a double.
