Race #4 Was a Battle!!

Sunday, Sep 27 – Race 4

Six boats ventured out on Sunday, Sep 27 with winds at 15 knots gusting to 25. A gorgeous fall day.  Perfect conditions for a race!

Aragorn (Skipper John Becker and crew Francis Clark), Beethoven (Skipper Cory Petrie and crew Scott Smith & Jeff Ridal) and Sealestial (Skipper Paul Rodrigue and crew Manon Rodrigue, Kate Miller & Ann Marie Blinkhorn), R&R (Skipper Robert Zwanenburg and crew Charles Deschamps) were joined by Jenna’s Journey (Skipper Mike Guay) and Pog Moith (Skipper Ellery Lafave).

The race committee was Nick Cox, Sylvie Lebel & Judy Pike.

The winds were strong for the entire race. As usual the first marker was tricky to get around with Aragorn touching it.  The marker needed to be rounded on the return as well and this time Sealestial touched it.  Both needed to go around again.

Beethoven was across the start line first but somehow lost steam along the way.  Sealestial was first through the red and green markers and around Sheek Island.  Aragorn and R&R were not far behind.  As we entered the bay it was clear that the fight to the finish line was between these two.  A picture perfect finish (sorry…no picture) and R&R was across the line first!

You can see the official race results on the SYC website under document archives – races.  As the Fleet Captain notes – Results so far set up a very interesting race on October 4 th .

Note from the Race Committee – Much better start with 3 crossing line within 10 seconds. Races are more challenging in a decent wind. In my opinion most were over canvassed, too much heeling and some sloppy tacks as it was difficult to pull in the genoa. A 90 minute race with 5 of the 6 all physically finishing within 5 minutes of each other.

The 5th race is next Sunday, Oct 4.  More boats and crew are always welcome!  Please see Paul before 930am.  Skippers meeting is at 930am and the race starts at 1030am.

Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the  Ocean 71

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 28.0 suggests that, in the right hands, the Ocean 71 will have enough performance to leave most other sailboats of similar waterline length well astern.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 27.3 means that a sailboat like the Ocean 71 (which doesn't have its ballast concentrated in a bulb at the foot of a deep keel), is likely to benefit from being reefed early to keep her sailing upright in a moderate breeze.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 161, tells us the Ocean 71 is clearly a light displacement sailboat. If she's loaded with too much heavy cruising gear her performance will suffer to a degree.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 41.4 suggests that crew comfort of an Ocean 71 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a heavy bluewater cruising boat. Pitching and rolling will be well damped - your cup of coffee on the salon table stands a reasonable chance of staying there in most conditions.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.7 tells us that an Ocean 71 would be a safer choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

Ocean 71 Sailboat: A Bluewater Cruiser with Style and Speed

If you are looking for a sailing boat that can take you to any corner of the world with comfort and performance, you might want to consider the Ocean 71 sailboat. This yacht is a classic design by the renowned Dutch naval architect E. G. Van de Stadt, who also created the legendary Ocean 60 and Ocean 80 models.

The Ocean 71 was built by Southern Ocean Shipyard in England from 1970 to 1982, and only 16 units were produced. Here are some of the features that make this boat a great choice for recreational sailors who want to explore the oceans.

Overview The Ocean 71 is a ketch-rigged monohull with a length of 21.6 meters (70 feet 11 inches) and a beam of 5.4 meters (17 feet 9 inches). It has a displacement of 40 tons and a draft of 2.7 meters (8 feet 10 inches). It can carry up to 2,000 liters (528 gallons) of water and 1,500 liters (396 gallons) of fuel. It has a spacious cockpit with twin wheels and a large aft deck with a dinghy davit. The hull is made of fiberglass with a balsa core, and the deck is teak-laid.

Accommodation The Ocean 71 has a generous interior layout that can accommodate up to 10 guests in five cabins, plus two crew members in a separate cabin forward. The owner's cabin is located aft, with a double berth, a sofa, a desk, a wardrobe and an ensuite head with shower. There are two guest cabins on each side of the saloon, each with twin berths and a shared head with shower. The saloon has a U-shaped settee and a large dining table on the port side, and a navigation station and a bar on the starboard side. The galley is located forward of the saloon, on the port side, and is equipped with a four-burner stove, an oven, a fridge, a freezer and ample storage space. The crew cabin has two single berths and an ensuite head with shower.

Hull and Deck The Ocean 71 has a sleek and elegant hull shape that gives it excellent sailing performance and stability. It has a moderate freeboard and a low profile that reduces windage and drag. The deck is wide and uncluttered, with plenty of room for sunbathing, relaxing or working on sails. The cockpit is well-protected by a sprayhood and a bimini, and has comfortable seating for the helmsman and the guests. The cockpit also has an integrated table for al fresco dining or drinks. The aft deck has a large locker for storing sails, ropes or other equipment, as well as a hydraulic davit for launching or retrieving the dinghy.

Mast and Rigging The Ocean 71 has a split rig that consists of two masts: a main mast that is keel-stepped and carries the mainsail and the mizzen staysail, and a mizzen mast that is deck-stepped and carries the mizzen sail and the spinnaker. The rig is designed to be easy to handle by a small crew or even single-handedly, as most of the lines are led back to the cockpit through clutches and winches. The spars are made of aluminum alloy, except for some models that have carbon fiber masts for extra lightness and stiffness. The standing rigging is made of stainless steel wire with swaged terminals, while the running rigging is made of synthetic rope or spectra. The sails are made of dacron or laminated cloth, depending on the model and the owner's preference. Some models have in-mast or in-boom reefing systems for convenience and safety.

Keel and Rudder The Ocean 71 has a fin keel with a lead bulb that provides good stability and maneuverability. The keel is bolted to the hull with stainless steel bolts that are accessible from inside the boat for inspection or maintenance. The rudder is a balanced spade rudder that is attached to the skeg by two pintles and gudgeons. The rudder is controlled by two stainless steel wheels in the cockpit through cables or rods that run through tubes under the deck.

The Ocean 71 sailboat is an impressive yacht that combines style, speed and comfort in one package. It is ideal for long-distance cruising or chartering, as it offers ample space, amenities and performance for its guests and crew.

Russia’s Navalny defends himself in new trial that could keep him locked up for decades

Jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny appeared before a Russian court on Monday to defend himself against new charges of extremism that could extend his prison term by decades.

The hearing took place at the IK-6 penal colony in Melekhovo, about 145 miles east of Moscow, where Navalny is already serving sentences totaling 11.5 years .

His supporters accuse Moscow of trying to break him to silence his criticism of President Vladimir Putin , something the Kremlin denies.

Journalists were not admitted to the courtroom but were able to watch a video link from a room nearby, with barely intelligible audio.

Alexei Navalny

Navalny, looking thin with cropped hair and dressed in a black prison uniform, could be seen seated at a desk, leafing through papers and conferring with one of his lawyers.

He then stood and spoke for three minutes, contesting the authority of the Moscow city court judge to try him in a penal colony far from the capital.

“Taking into account the current circumstances, and criminal law, you should withdraw,” he said.

He also demanded that his parents be allowed inside the hearing, saying they had come to Melekhovo believing it would be an open session.

Soon afterward, the court adjourned for a break.

Asked for comment on the case, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “We are not following this trial.”

An entry in the court record last month showed the new charges relate to six different articles of the criminal code, including inciting and financing extremist activity and creating an extremist organization.

Russia has outlawed Navalny’s campaign organization as part of a crackdown on dissent that started well before the conflict in Ukraine and has intensified in the nearly 16 months since it started. Last week one of his regional campaign leaders was jailed for 7.5 years.

Jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny went on trial on June 19 on "extremism" charges that could see his prison time extended for decades, as the Kremlin moves to silence dissenting voices.

In a tweet posted on his account by his supporters last month, Navalny responded with typical irony to the new charges.

“Well, Alexei, you’re in some real trouble now ... The Prosecutor General’s Office has officially provided me with 3,828 pages describing all the crimes I’ve committed while already imprisoned.”

He said he had not been allowed to read the material to find out what exactly he was accused of because he was once again in solitary confinement and allowed only a mug and one book.

Navalny, 47, earned admiration from the disparate opposition for voluntarily returning to Russia in 2021 from Germany, where he had been treated for what Western laboratory tests showed was an attempt to poison him with a Soviet-era nerve agent .

The Kremlin denied trying to kill him and said there was no evidence he had been poisoned with such a toxin.

It was not immediately clear which specific actions or incidents the new charges referred to.

One relates to “rehabilitation of Nazism” — a possible reference to Navalny’s declarations of support for Ukraine, whose government Russia accuses of embodying Nazi ideology. Ukraine and its Western allies dismiss that charge as baseless.

In April, investigators formally linked Navalny supporters to the murder of Vladlen Tatarsky , a popular military blogger and supporter of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine who was killed by a bomb in St Petersburg.

Russia’s National Anti-terrorism Committee (NAC) said Ukrainian intelligence had organized the bombing with help from Navalny’s supporters.

This appeared to be a reference to the fact that a suspect arrested over the killing once registered to take part in an anti-Kremlin voting scheme promoted by Navalny’s movement.

Navalny allies denied any connection to the killing. Ukraine attributed it to "domestic terrorism."

Jailed Russian Opposition Leader Navalny Receives New Sentence of 19 Years

Aleksei A. Navalny, who is already in prison, was sentenced for supporting “extremism,” amid intensified suppression of dissent in Russia.

A Russian court on Friday handed Aleksei A. Navalny, the jailed opposition campaigner, a new, 19-year sentence on charges of supporting “extremism” and ordered him imprisoned under the harshest conditions. The sentence demonstrated the widening scope of repression under President Vladimir V. Putin and threatened to further isolate his most cutting domestic critic.

Mr. Navalny was already serving a 9-year sentence east of Moscow on fraud charges when Russian authorities added additional cases against him, in what his supporters have characterized as a savage campaign to banish him from Russia’s public sphere and erode his health in confinement.

In the case that ended Friday, Mr. Navalny, 47, was sentenced for creating an extremist organization and other crimes, and was ordered imprisoned in one of Russia’s “special regime” colonies, known for their harsh treatment of inmates. His supporters have warned that confinement in that environment for such a long sentence represents a significant threat to his life.

The new 19-year sentence can be served concurrently to Mr. Navalny’s existing sentences, according to his spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh. Mr. Navalny has said that he soon could receive yet another sentence, of 10 years, on a separate terrorism charge that Russian authorities have brought against him during his imprisonment.

“The number doesn’t matter,” Mr. Navalny said in a statement after the sentence was handed down. “I understand very well that, like many political prisoners, I am serving a life sentence. Where life is measured by the duration of my life or the life span of this regime.”

In his statement, Mr. Navalny urged his followers not to give up, warning that Russian authorities were taking these draconian actions to frighten them and deprive them of the will to resist. The liberal Russian opposition has been fractured, sent into exile and challenged by infighting as a result of Mr. Putin’s increased repression.

“You are being forced to surrender your Russia without a fight to a band of traitors, thieves and scoundrels who have seized power,” Mr. Navalny said. “Putin should not achieve his goals. Don’t lose the will to resist.”

Earlier this summer, Mr. Navalny had remarked in a social media post about the absurdity of the mercenary boss Yevgeny V. Prigozhin going free after he led an aborted mutiny against the Russian defense leadership, even as Mr. Navalny himself faced the prospect of a severe sentence for “extremism.”

The sentence was met with condemnation in Washington and other Western capitals, now home to many supporters of Mr. Navalny, many of whom began leaving Russia even before Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“The United States strongly condemns Russia’s conviction of opposition leader Aleksey Navalny on politically motivated charges,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement. “The Kremlin cannot silence the truth. Navalny should be released.”

Mr. Navalny initially rose to prominence in Russia as a blogger carrying out investigations that exposed the country’s corrupt elite.

In the aftermath of parliamentary elections in 2011, he rocketed to global fame, leading a vast street protest movement against what he called the “crooks and thieves” in charge of Russia, emerging as a charismatic speaker and a clear threat to Mr. Putin’s rule.

For a period of time, he and his supporters were allowed to operate in Russia.

Though Russian television channels wouldn’t put him on air and Mr. Putin refused to mention him by name, Mr. Navalny amassed thousands of young followers, particularly in Moscow and St. Petersburg. He mounted a bid for Moscow mayor in 2013, earning nearly a third of the vote in Russia’s biggest city despite being barred from state media and hampered in other ways.

But when he tried to run for president in 2018, he was formally barred from becoming a candidate. He was poisoned in 2020 during a visit to Siberia, a signal that he and his supporters would be prevented from operating in Russia as a campaign of repression dramatically intensified.

Mr. Navalny nearly died after being poisoned with a military-grade nerve agent , an episode that he and Western officials have described as an assassination attempt by the Kremlin. The Russian government has denied involvement.

While receiving medical treatment in Germany , he told the German publication Der Spiegel that he “would not give Putin the gift of not retuning to Russia,” saying he had no desire to be an opposition figure in exile. He returned the following year to Russia, where waiting security forces detained him.

His group, the Anti-Corruption Foundation, was subsequently outlawed — declared an “extremist” outfit — and the Russian authorities began to crack down even more severely on its activities.

Two of Mr. Navalny’s associates were sentenced in mid-July to prison terms of seven and a half years and two and a half years for participating in the organization. At least 15 activists who worked with Mr. Navalny face similar charges, according to Ms. Yarmysh.

Many members of the group have gone into exile, where they have continued its work, publishing investigations into high-ranking Russian officials, including Defense Minister Sergei K. Shoigu and Mr. Prigozhin , the founder of the Wagner mercenary group.

Friday’s hearing represented the latest Kafka-esque episode in the Russian opposition campaigner’s persecution.

Mr. Navalny, thin and dressed in a prison uniform, filed into a makeshift courtroom set up on the grounds of the penal colony, where the trial had been held in closed-door hearings.

He was surrounded by his lawyers and his co-defendant, Daniel Kholodny, a technician who once helped run Mr. Navalny’s YouTube channel and who received an eight-year sentence in a standard prison.

Journalists who arrived at the proceedings were not allowed into the makeshift courtroom and instead were ushered into a separate room to hear a live translation of the judge’s decision.

But the sound was of such poor quality that most of the journalists left without having been able to hear the sentence, and even Mr. Navalny’s team outside the courtroom struggled to understand what was happening.

His parents tried to attend the proceedings but were denied entry, according to Mr. Navalny’s organization, which said that his parents have not seen their son for more than a year.

Acquittals are extremely rare in Russian courts, especially against opposition figures. Mr. Navalny and his supporters had predicted a harsh sentence, especially given that the Kremlin has banned criticism of its war in Ukraine, stepped up its jailing of opposition voices and shuttered independent news media outlets.

Before the war, a two-decade sentence for what is essentially dissent would have been unusually harsh. But the ruling was the latest in a string of extreme judgments, which have grown more common since Mr. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

In April, Vladimir Kara-Murza, a dissident with Russian and British citizenship and a contributor to The Washington Post, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for treason, spreading “fake” information and participating in an “undesirable organization.” Mr. Kara-Murza lost an appeal of the ruling this week.

The funeral of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny , who died earlier this month in a remote Arctic penal colony, will take place Friday in Moscow after several locations declined to host the service, his spokesperson said.

His funeral will be held at a church in Moscow’s southeast Maryino district on Friday afternoon, Kira Yarmysh said Wednesday. The burial is to be at a nearby cemetery.

Navalny died in mid-February in one of Russia’s harshest penal facilities. Russian authorities haven’t announced the cause of his death at age 47, but many Western leaders have already blamed it on Russian President Vladimir Putin .

His widow, Yulia Navalnaya , accused Putin and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin of trying to block a public funeral. “We don’t want any special treatment — just to give people the opportunity to say farewell to Alexei in a normal way,” she wrote on X, previously Twitter.

AP AUDIO: The funeral of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny will be on Friday, spokesperson says.

AP correspondent Karen Chammas reports on plans to memorialize Navalny.

Yarmysh described the difficulties his team encountered in trying to find a site for a funeral, saying that most venues claimed they were fully booked, with some “refusing when we mention the surname ‘Navalny,” and one disclosing that “funeral agencies were forbidden to work with us.”

Ivan Zhdanov, the director of Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, said the funeral was initially planned for Thursday –- the day of Putin’s annual state-of-the-nation address – but no venue would agree to hold it then.

“The real reason is clear. The Kremlin understands that nobody will need Putin and his message on the day we say farewell to Alexei,” Zhdanov wrote on his messaging app channel.

In an interview with the independent Russian news site Meduza on Wednesday, Zhdanov said authorities were pressuring Navalny’s relatives to “have a quiet family funeral” and move the burial to the Khovanskoye cemetery on Moscow’s southwestern outskirts.

“They are again blackmailing relatives and saying: either hold a quiet family funeral, or nothing will really work out for you,” Zhdanov said.

He said Navalny’s lawyer, Vasily Dubkov, who helped Navalny’s mother retrieve her son’s body, was briefly detained on Tuesday “as some kind of suspicious person” when he went to visit the morgue, where Zhdanov said there currently is a strong police presence.

Zhadov declined to comment on the circumstances of Navalny’s death, but repeated claims by close Navalny associate Maria Pevchikh that there had been negotiations for a possible prisoner exchange involving Navalny before his death.

The exchange “was at the final stage” and would have taken place “with the mediation of the United Arab Emirates and Roman Abramovich,” Zhdanov said.

Claims about negotiations for a prisoner exchange, which were repeated on social media by other Navalny aides, could not be independently confirmed.

Shortly after the announcement of the funeral plans, Navalny’s widow addressed European lawmakers in Strasbourg.

Speaking at the European Parliament, she confirmed that her husband would be buried on Friday and expressed fears that the police might interfere.

“I’m not sure yet whether it will be peaceful or whether police will arrest those who have come to say goodbye to my husband,” Navalnaya said.

Appearing tearful at some points amid applause from lawmakers but largely resolute, Navalnaya said her husband’s death “showed everyone that Putin is capable of anything, and that you cannot negotiate with him.”

She appealed to the European Parliament to be “innovative” in its approach to the Russian president and those close to him.

“You cannot hurt Putin with another resolution or another set of sanctions,” she said, urging lawmakers instead to “apply the methods of fighting organized crime, not political competition.”

She asked the parliament to investigate “financial machinations” and “mafia associates” in their countries and “discreet lawyers and financiers who are helping Putin and his friends to hide money.”

Navalnaya and Navalny were married for more than 20 years, and she was at his side as he helped lead the biggest protests in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

In introducing Navalnaya, the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, paid tribute to Navalny.

“For many in Russia and outside, he represented hope. Hope in better days. Hope in a free Russia. Hope in the future,” she said.
