Life Aboard The Stella Maris Yacht Galapagos
As you and your guests arrive to begin your private charter cruise, you will be swept away by the ship’s contemporary interior design. The striking mix of metallics and wood tones continues through all six ensuite cabins, but the stand-out is the master suite on the bridge deck, which features a king-size bed, and desk.
The sun worshippers in your group will always be found sprawled on the chaise lounges or in the jacuzzi on the highest sundeck. When it is time for a cocktail, head to the upper deck, which is home to a wet bar, BBQ, and alfresco dining area. Below, the main deck features a shaded social space, which is the perfect spot to enjoy the views while escaping the equatorial sun. Back indoors, you will find a plush living room and formal ding room.
Excursions For Your Stella Maris Galapagos Cruise
You may have read about the Galapagos Islands in a guidebook or online, but nothing compares to experiencing this ecological paradise firsthand. During your time on the Stella Maris, wildlife encounters abound, thanks to your expert naturalist guide. At every stop, your certified guide will show you the best places to see endemic species, such as blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and marine iguanas.
The ship sails along two different eight-day routes. Opt for a cruise through the eastern islands and enjoy a stop at Lobos Island to snorkel with sea lions. Later, a stop on Floreana Island provides an opportunity to observe flamingos. Select a cruise through the western islands to stop at Espumilla Beach on Santiago Island, a nesting site for sea turtles. Then, check out the Galapagos penguins and flightless cormorants that call Tagus Cove on Isabela Island home.
The ship is equipped with kayaks, snorkeling gear, wet suits, and stand-up paddleboards, so you will have a wide variety of ways to get close to the local marine life. Fishing and scuba excursions may also be arranged upon request. And, you can share photos of all your adventures with the onboard WIFI.
Excellent Service To Complete Your Luxury Experience
The Stella Maris’ ten-person crew provides an impressive crew-to-staff-ratio that surpasses that of many other ships in the area. From the captain to the stewardesses, everyone aboard the ship is dedicated to providing seamless service and ensuring that your holiday is magical.
Of course, your favorite crew members will likely be the chef and sous chef. With experience in traditional French cuisine and time spent working in Michelin-starred restaurants, the chef aboard the Stella Maris creates dishes of the finest quality and taste.
For family vacations, getaways with friends, and corporate retreats, the Stella Maris combines first-class service with chic accommodations and once-in-a-lifetime excursions in the Galapagos Islands.

8 Day - Explore the Enchanted Islands
Embarkation
AM : Arrival to San Cristobal, transfer to the yacht.
PM : Lobos Island - a small flat island, located 10 kilometers northeast of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, on the coast of Isla San Cristobal. Isla Lobos name is given because it is home to several sea lions that frolic on the beach. It is also the ideal place to observe nesting frigates and blue-footed boobies. It has a protected channel where you can do snorkeling with sea lions.
Punta Pitt, Witch Hill & Kicker Rock
AM : Punta Pitt is located at the eastern end of Isla San Cristobal. Is a group of eroded volcanoes, sparsely populated by the endemic vegetation of the islands.
PM : This beautiful beach of white coral is located on the north coast of the San Cristobal Island where you can swim, snorkel and observe the sea lions. In the vicinity of the beach you can also see a variety of seabirds like blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, herons, frigate birds and shore birds.
We also visit Kicker Rock also known as the Sleeping Lion because of its resemblance. It is located of the coast of San Cristobal, and you can find the remains of a lava flows eroded by the tides, as well as two vertical rocks rising 500 feet from the ocean that form a small channel that is navigable by small boats. This Galapagos Island's natural monument has become a favorite sight for cruises due to the many Tropicbirds, Frigates and Boobies that fill the surrounding air. Beneath the sea, the crystal clear waters offer a brilliant show of colorful tropical fish and invertebrates.
Gardner Bay & Suarez Point
AM : Gardner Bay is located on the north-eastern coast of Hood, Gardner Bay provides an excellent beach for relaxing, swimming and the opportunity to observe sea lions. Here we can also observe sharks and other sea life in the crystal clear ocean waters.
PM : Punta Suarez. This rocky land sustains one of the most impressive and varied colonies of sea birds in the Galapagos. Along its southern shore, high cliffs rise up from the sea affording the visitor spectacular views of soaring birds, and of the blow whole where water spouts up to 50-75 feet into the air according to the intensity of the surf.
Cormorant Point & Post Office Bay
AM : Punta Cormorant offers probably the best Flamingo lagoon in the Galapagos; it is also one of the largest in the islands. It is situated between two volnoes that give the area a special atmosphere. There are various species of shorebirds to be seen besides flamingos; the most frequent are common stilts, white-checked pintail ducks and other migratory birds. This is a unique zone due to the high percentage of endemic plant species. It is also very interesting to see the two distinct beaches: “The Green Beach” (due to its high percentage of olivine crystals in the sand) and the “Flour Sand Beach” which is made up of coral.
PM : Historically, Post Office Bay is a site with a wooden barrel that was placed in the 18th century by the crew of a whaling ship. It has been used since this time by mariners and tourists as a post office. The idea is to carry letters or postcards to their destination by hand. Apart from being the Post Office Barrel, this site was the landing area for some of the first colonist.
North Seymour Island & Pinnacle Rock
AM : After breakfast in the morning on this island you can see blue-footed boobies, colonies of frigates, fork-tailed gulls, terns, sea lions, lava lizards and land iguanas. Palo Santo trees can also be observed.
PM : After lunch visit to the Pinnacle Rock beach for swimming and snorkeling. In the afternoon dry landing to reach the viewpoint of Bartolome. On this island, you can see interesting formations of lava and cinder cones. After a 30 to 40 minute hike, a wooden staircase leads to the top of the island where there are beautiful views of the nearby beaches. This island is one of the most visited and photographed because of Pinnacle Rock.
El Barranco & Darwin's Bay
AM : Prince Phillip's Steps is the breeding ground for the tree-loving Red-footed Booby and the ground-nesting Masked Booby. This is also home to four species of Darwin Finches: the Large Ground Finch, Sharp-beaked Ground Finch, Large Cactus Finch and Warbler Finch. Natural history enthusiasts will recall that Charles Darwin's observation of varied adaptations of finches’ beaks helped inspire his theories on natural selection. Genovesa is also home to the indigenous Galapagos Mockingbird and the Galapagos Dove. If time permits, you can snorkel at El Barranco on the west side of Darwin Bay.
PM : Genovesa is the only northern island of the Archipelago open to visitors. This 14 sq km. island is the tip of a submerged shield volcano that rises 76 meters above the sea level. Its central crater is filled with salt water. Ocean erosion created the Darwin Bay on the southern slope. Genovesa lacks on reptiles, except for the Marine Iguanas. It is a paradise for sea birds, including large colonies of the Red-footed Boobies and Great Frigate birds. Swimming, snorkeling and dingy rides are available.
South Plazas Island & Santa Fe Island
AM : One of a pair of small uplifted islands a short distance from the east coast of Santa Cruz, South Plaza has unique Sesuvium plants and Opuntia cactuses scattered across the landscape which provide some of the most interesting wildlife observations available in Galapagos. Land iguanas are easily seen from the trail under the shade of cactuses waiting for a prickly pear to fall. Swallow-tailed gulls, along with various other sea birds, use the rising air to glide effortlessly over the escarpment and the protected rocky seashore is prime habitat for a large colony of noisy sea lions.
PM : Snorkeling along the rocky coast of the island you can see a variety of fish and sea turtles. On land you can see colonies of sea lions, land iguanas, frigate birds, Galapagos doves and lava lizards. The island flora is unique as you can see a forest of giant cacti and Palo Santo trees.
Disembarkation
AM : We will travel by bus up into the gently sloping and forested highlands. The scenery changes continuously as we ascend through all seven vegetation zones found in the Galápagos. We will visit a private reserve where giant tortoises lounge around a quiet pond grazing on vegetation "El Chato". After plenty of time to explore the reserve we will drive to a pair of large sinkholes called “The Twins” (Los Gemelos) where we will explore some ancient lava tubes. These tunnels are the largest lava tubes found in Galápagos and as we walk through them our feet will trace the path of the once-molten rock that flowed millions of years ago. This may also be an opportunity to observe Darwin finches, yellow warblers, bright red vermillion flycatchers and Giant Tortoises that gave the name to these islands. Then transfer to the airport.
AM : Arrive to Galapagos and transfer to the yacht.
PM : We will start our cruise with a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station. The Charles Darwin Research Station is based at Santa Cruz. Visitors are encouraged to donate to this organization, which carries out investigations and advises the Ecuadorian government and travel agencies on minimizing the impact of tourism on the islands. It contains a national-park information center and a museum. The station is also a tortoise breeding and rearing center, where tortoises of different subspecies are prepared to be reintroduced back to their natural habitat.
Chinese Hat & Rabida
AM : Chinese Hat - a small islet located nears the south-east of Santiago. It's shaped like a Chinese hat when seen from afar. It is an island consisting of a cone type "Splash" (lava ejected as droplets and falling close to where it came out, which forms a cone angle) that forms the top, and lava tubes that run down to the coast. In the west you can see lava formations, which are an indicator that the flows were formed under the sea and have been raised towards the exterior, reason why coral heads on lava can be seen. This visit provides an excellent opportunity for the interpretation of geologic features such as lava tubes and lava flows.
PM : Rabida, also known by the name of Jervis in honor of a British Admiral John Jervis, Earl of St. Vincent. Rabida is located 5 km south of Santiago Island and is commonly regarded as the geographical center of the Galapagos Islands. It has an area of 4.9 km ² and a maximum altitude of 367 meters. It has a high iron content, which causes that this place has a distinctive reddish color. Its main attraction is the salt lagoon with flamingoes, pelicans and boobies place where they build their nests.
Espumilla Beach, Bucanero Cove & Egas Point
AM : Espumilla Beach is located in northern coast of Santiago Island in James Bay. During the last presence the El Niño phenomenon, one of the two lagoons in this site, underwent a process of sedimentation, thus causing the disappearance of a colony of flamingos. The main attractions are the Palo Santo forest and the marvelous. The beach is also an important site for nesting marine turtles.
PM : The Black Beach is located at the west side of the Island and is the main attraction. The volcanic tuff deposits have created the formation of this special black sand beach. This site is called Puerto Egas, because there was an attempted, to start the exploitation of salt, which failed because the price of salt in the continent was very cheap and did not justify its exploitation in Galapagos. The project was abandoned and they left their infrastructure
Espinoza Point & Tagus Cove
AM : Fernandina is the third largest island in the archipelago and has a single visitor site: Punta Espinoza located at the northeastern tip of the island. Just across Tagus Cove, is a visitor’s site where some of the unique species of Galapagos can be seen. Marine iguanas conglomerate in larger groups than in any other island. They bask around in the sand, swim near the shore and sometimes block the way at the landing dock. Among the unique species found here, is the Flightless Cormorant. A bird that do to the lack of predators had to adjust their way of survival and perfect their skills of finding food in the ocean. Their wings, tails and feet progressively adapted for swimming. To see these birds, is to witness evolution happening right in front of you can get within 2m of the cormorants and penguins.
PM : Tagus Cove, a tour along the cliffs in a zodiac will give the visitors a good chance to see the Galapagos penguin, the flightless cormorant and other sea birds. From the landing dock it is about a 30 minute hike along the trail up to the top of the cliff from where you can view Darwin Lake, an uplifted ultra-saline lake saltier than the sea. You can also see several volcanoes from this location. Look carefully at the graffiti on the surrounding cliffs of the cove, it has been written by pirates, whalers and buccaneers in past centuries.
Elizabeth Bay & Moreno Point
AM : Elizabeth Bay is located on the west shore of Isabela, at the Perry Isthmus, Elizabeth Bay is a marine visitor site (no landings are permitted). As you visit Elizabeth bay small boat Galapagos Hawks soar overhear and schools of Pompanos and Dorados can be seen swimming underneath you.
PM : Punta Moreno is located on the north coast of Isabela Island. The route of the trail is approximately 2100 meters. The main attraction in Punta Moreno is the coastal lagoons in the middle of black lava flow where there are several species of birds. It has a view of 3 volcanoes, the most actives in the Galapagos; Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul.
Tintoreras, Wetlands, Wall of Tears & Tortoise Breading Center
AM : This day will lead you to the largest island of the archipelago, Isabela Island. With a surface of 4588 sq.km the island encompasses more than half the land area of the entire Galápagos. Here you will have a short boat trip through the harbor bay of Isabela. Pass sea lions and pelicans; take a relaxing sunbath on the fishing boat. Eventually, we will reach the small island of “Tintoreras”. Here you will take an easy walk through the bizarre landscape of lava with its huge colonies of sea lizards. Also a colony of sea lions is local here and often you can observe white tip sharks, resting in the flat water near the shore. You will walk with your guide to the historic Wall of Tears.
PM : We head up to the highlands from Puerto Villamil to Sierra Negra slope, and later we will do some hiking on uneven terrain until we arrive to the Sierra Negra volcano rim. Sierra Negra is the second widest crater in the world. From this viewpoint, you have fantastic sights to the 6 x 5 -mile-wide crater, the rest of the volcanoes and Perry Isthmus, a 12 Km wide lava field. From here we can hike to Chico Volcano to watch the striking lava formations, examples of the geological occurrences that have created the Galapagos Islands. We also visit the tortoise birth center of Isabella.
El Chato, Highlands & Tortuga Bay
AM : Our first stop is at Los Gemelos (the twins), which are a pair of craters approximately 30m deep, it is a Volcanic action underneath the ground made the magna chambers empty causing the above ground to cave in, creating several craters, of which Los Gemelos are the largest. However, our main time in the Santa Cruz highlands will be spent at the Tortoise Reserve EL CHATO, where a number of the endemic Santa Cruz subspecies of Giant Tortoise, “Geochelone elephantopus porteri”, wander freely. The highlands are also home to Scalesia, Miconia, and Pampa vegetation zones. Birds in this area include several species of finch, the vermillion flycatcher, Galápagos rail, Galapagos Dove, and paint-billed cake. We also may have the opportunity to visit the spectacular lava tubes on the island.
PM : Tortuga Bay (Wet Landing): The interesting walk to the Turtle Bay beach, perhaps the most beautiful beaches in the Galapagos, that includes swimming and snorkeling, observing colonies of marine iguanas, pelicans, Darwin's finches, sharks, sharks, sea turtles, the incredible forest Giant Cactus, and the nesting of marine iguanas.
AM : We visit the Interpretation Center at San Cristobal. This site has educational information about the evolution of the Galapagos Islands and animal life in the islands. Then transfer to the airport of San Cristobal.

Stella Maris: On board VSY's 72m flagship superyacht
Viareggio Superyachts (VSY) pushed the envelope for its third custom build and turned out a truly revolutionary yacht. As she changes ownership for the first time since her launch, we remember her build...
Stella Maris is striking in appearance, but her beauty is much more than skin deep. In fact, the yacht is so cerebral that many of her technical achievements are lost to the almost overwhelming physicality of her spaces. At 72.1 metres and 2,114 gross tonnes, Stella Maris is the largest custom superyacht to date from the young Italian yard Viareggio Superyachts (VSY) and was launched in 2013. The yard had a very particular vision for a yacht that could be used for all seasons, could incorporate a fully certified helideck and would establish volume, privacy and lifestyle ‘beyond luxury’.
Drawn by Espen Øino , the lines of Stella Maris are radical to some degree, barely hinting at the split deck arrangement of her interior, but instantly proclaiming the supremacy of glass. The idea, says Øino, was to ‘hit the perfect balance between form and function, innovation and technology, comfort and aesthetics’. Her bold, masculine hull colour, DuPont Metallic Grey, balances the height of the topsides with the off-white superstructure. In cooperation with Laurent Giles Naval Architects, Øino has exploited that 2,114 gross tonne hull to its limits, allowing for vast areas, pushing the yard further than it has dared go before.
One expects to see evolution aboard the third yacht delivered by a yard – she follows Candyscape II and RoMa – but with Stella Maris the change is more revolutionary than evolutionary. It started, as Øino says, with a blank sheet of paper and a design brief for numerous floor-to-ceiling windows, 2.7 metre interior headroom and a commercial helideck . The trick would be to make it look right. Øino’s plan, enthusiastically supported by VSY, was to make the helipad a feature rather than to try to disguise it. The tip-off that it exists is that the yacht’s decks don’t inset as they go up – in fact, the helipad itself actually extends outboard of her profile.
The scale of the undertaking is impressive indeed: at the time of her launch Stella Maris was only the fourth yacht to achieve certification by the Helideck Certification Agency (HCA). At 72 metres, she is also one of the smallest superyachts to have obtained it, without making any compromises – especially in terms of security. Guests can fly in and out, day or night, whether with side landings or those practiced by the Royal Navy. Moreover, the helideck and adjacent sun deck can host a dinner for 100 people.
Stella Maris ’s most arresting features, at least in profile, are the two huge glass-walled aft saloons on her main and upper decks, sitting right below the helipad. The design, engineering and classification for this feature took nearly two years, yet it is so seamless that when a guest steps aboard, he or she is unlikely to wonder how it is possible for such a light and airy unbroken structure to be under a fire zone and a 2.9-tonne helicopter. Knowing that there would be so much glass in the boat from day one, VSY set up a multi-disciplinary approach to structure, vibration and acoustics – smart, as the main saloon and its starboard side greenhouse also sit atop the engine room. The glass walls are sandwich construction for UV and acoustic protection. Staggered decks – six forward and five aft of amidships – actually allow the loads to be distributed quite handily without the need for obtrusive support columns.
VSY had a specific noise target in mind: silence, which was quantified as 46 decibels at 15.5 knots in sea state 2. Because glass can amplify the resonance of the engines, VSY contracted Joe Smullin of Soundown, a US-based acoustic expert. Working with glass specialists, the yard engineered each glass panel specifically for its location.
The main deck amidships is where architectural integrity meets industrial, and where there is so much light and height it stops you in your tracks. Stella Maris is anchored around a vertical core, which is where all the circulation happens for guests or crew, who also have a superb network of access corridors. This central circulation zone links the spaces fore and aft, port and starboard and vertically around a glass lift wrapped by a wide and gentle staircase. It isn’t a lift in the technical sense with a car that goes up and down; rather a platform slides up and down in a glass tube. The doors are not on the lift, but alternate on the tube at each floor landing due to the staggered decks that would be impossible to manage with a car.
The staggered decks accomplish a couple of things. On one hand, they keep guests from having to huff and puff up a full flight of stairs without a landing, and they also accommodate the fact that while the saloons aft have that magnificent 2.7-metre height, the cabin areas forward are 2.3 metres. Øino’s particular genius was in masking this on the profile.
The two aft saloons are opposites of each other in concept. On the lower of the decks, the sensation is of being inside and looking out through the full-length windows to the arrival deck. At the swipe of a touchscreen, the aft seating and bar area can be opened to the outdoors, as glass panels melt away and hidden panels deploy to surround and divide the interior dining area. On the deck above, the theory is reversed with the dining table aft and open to the elements, until glass panels are locked into place to create a winter garden, which opens to a seating area farther forward.
‘The design of Stella Maris is all about extending the seasons,’ says VSY. ‘You don’t even have to move [the boat] to the tropics for winter because the windows keep it from feeling dark and all the indoor/outdoor spaces can be heated or air-conditioned.’
With the biggest luxury the sense of spaciousness, interior designer Michela Reverberi took care not to clutter it with too many things. Even the dining tables are glass to keep them from obscuring the view. One easily overlooked stylistic detail is the saloon lighting, which floods the room with slivers of surprisingly warm-toned, edge-lit LED light, set into the intersection of mullions and overhead beams like glowing L-brackets. ‘In the daytime you have such strong side light coming through the windows, so I wanted a bit of continuity by shooting the light out into the room sideways rather than just having all down-lighting,’ says Reverberi.
The forward part of Stella Maris' main deck is given over to the guest suites: four doubles and two twins. Almost identical in layout, their differences lie mainly in the choice of furnishings and fabrics, meaning that particularly on charter, guests won’t be arguing about who gets which cabin.
The next deck up houses the bridge forward, fitted out with equipment worthy of commercial ships cleverly integrated into a smart leather dashboard, with each of the screens housed in stainless steel casings. Kongsberg K-Bridge was chosen for the electronic charting system, radars and autopilot and a Rolls-Royce system for the variable pitch propellers. From a further three dedicated screens aft of the smart Foglizzo leather bridge chairs the first engineer can monitor the components that make up the workings of the yacht. The command centre ship’s office and captain’s cabin are separated from the aft lounge by a full-beam gym with sliding doors to allow a breeze to sweep through.
Above the bridge is the owner’s deck. From the guest lobby a silently operated panel door reveals a small lobby with an office/day room to starboard. Ahead is a central dressing room with floor-to-ceiling wardrobes and a huge Ottoman flanked by two stylish Brazilian blue marble bathrooms port and starboard. Forward are the modest-sized sleeping quarters where light streams in from a semicircle of floor-to-ceiling windows. Doors on either side lead to a private deck, and because of the large angled overhead eyebrows on each deck, the owners can enjoy complete privacy as well as an unblemished view of the horizon from the bed.
The tender garage of Stella Maris on the lower deck is one of those evolutionary steps for the shipyard. ‘This tender bay is completely watertight and self contained,’ says VSY. ‘Below the teak floor is a sump tank, totally separate from the rest of the hull, the bilges and the beach club aft.’ (The tender bay is four steps lower than the level of the beach club aft or the engine room forward.) If water washes into the garage, it is picked up by four centrifugal pumps capable of removing eight tonnes of water in three minutes. The entire tender bay is finished to a high standard and the tenders rest on removable chocks. With the shell doors open and railings in place, it makes a unique party spot, particularly so as a specially designed air-conditioning system with emphasis on dehumidifying the air keeps it from being clammy or musty and quickly dries the tenders and any wet teak decking.
The subtext of Stella Maris is future proofing. The vessel platform has been designed and engineered to comply with the Passenger Yacht Code for 13 to 36 passengers, should a future owner want to convert the gym into a pair of VIP cabins to create nine suites. There is sufficient crew accommodation and safety equipment compliance already. And the helipad can be upgraded to carry a nine-passenger bird.
Another element of future proofing is the yacht’s Centric system for monitoring and communication. VSY calls it the yacht’s neurological system. The entire operation runs on a fibre optic backbone, which easily can be tapped into, to add or change equipment or monitors. As it stands, the Centric system checks or monitors 2,400 ‘points’ on Stella Maris which might be a door seal, the temperature of a cabin, the position of a valve or angle of the blades of the variable Rolls-Royce propellers. All data is available and can be called up in milliseconds in a hierarchy to answer questions or deliver commands.
‘It is efficient and seamless,’ says the yard. ‘Say, for example, that the guests have gone ashore and the captain wants to reduce demand on the air-conditioners and thus the generators. With one touch on the monitor, he calls up all the guest areas, taps the menu for temperature and with one tap raises the temperature setting throughout all the areas to 24 degrees. Did someone leave lights on in their cabin? Tap and they are out – no need to have crew check each cabin. Same thing when the guests call the tender to pick them up. One touch and all the cabins are returned to the previous temperature and ambient light is returned to all guest spaces.’
The system on Stella Maris is also like an electronic butler. Guests access a menu of services and information from anywhere aboard. ‘It’s about exceeding expectations,’ the yard continues. ‘You wake up and think, “What are we doing today?” Tap the screen and it says the boat is en route to Cap Ferrat. We anchor at 1000. The tenders and jet skis will be in the water and available at 1020. The pool will be filled, heated and ready at 1040. Massage openings today are…. Would you like breakfast delivered to your cabin? You tap and down comes a menu of suggestions, and it asks what time you’d like it to appear. Your response is routed to the beeper of the right member of the crew.’
The advances don’t stop there. ‘Green’ isn’t just a buzzword to the shipyard – during the course of the yacht’s construction, VSY director Cristiana Longarini assembled an impressive group of scientists, environmentalists and maritime industry professionals for a workshop on yachting sustainability and bringing sustainability into shipyards. In fact, the VSY directives on environmental compliance and the certification standards it adheres to (such as ISO 14001) are remarkable. The yard was also the first European builder to sign the Wood Forever Pact with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, guaranteeing it will use only timber obtained in an ethical and environmentally sustainable way.
‘For VSY, sustainability is not a luxury but a responsibility – and represents a long-term commitment originally made when the shipyard opened and which will see it as an increasingly frontline leader in this field,’ says Mrs Longarini. ‘For us, sustainability means discovering new routes and – as history teaches – courage and passion alone redesign the maps necessary for new ways forward.
VSY has been active in this sense from the outset, equipping its yachts with various solutions aimed at reducing negative impact on the environment. Among these is the Green Anchoring System – dynamic positioning (DPS) – that can be used where traditional anchoring would damage the seabed and is therefore forbidden. DPS, along with advanced biological sewage treatment and double soot scrubbers on all exhausts, was what allowed Stella Maris to remain in the Cinque Terre National Park for the duration of her photo shoot, while Vienna Eleuteri, a scientist for environmental quality and sustainability, simultaneously conducted research.
Working with Kongsberg, renowned for DPS for the offshore oil and gas industry, VSY developed an integrated system to control the thrust of Voith and Schottel auxiliary thrusters to keep the yacht on station with an extremely tight tolerance of 30 centimetres. Critics of dynamic positioning say it can use a lot of fuel, and it’s true that in certain wind and sea conditions, precision comes with a price. But the captain can also tell the DPS it only has a certain amount of power to work with – for example, one generator – and the system will organise itself within that power limit to create a larger drift area.
Such a full volume yacht surprisingly has its quiet spaces – the best a hidden area on the top deck. Here, forward of the drama of two pools and the helideck is a semi-sheltered oasis, with huge lounges embraced by the stylised mast base. It is the perfect retreat at the top of the world – an apt metaphor for a yacht named Stella Maris .

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital
There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.
How to find the right boat?
There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.
Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.
This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.
Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such option offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).
If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.
Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.
How to buy tickets?
Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.
“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!” wrote (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.
Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.
Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.
Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.
Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as this offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.
This website (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other website sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.
Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.
“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.
There are two main boarding piers in the city center: Hotel Ukraine and Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.
Where to sit onboard?
Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.
The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.
Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.
There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika
Ratings and reviews, location and contact.
Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!
Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.
everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical
Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing
Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More
Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More
This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.
I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More
Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.
Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!
Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.
Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More
Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!
I've been here several times during two business trip in Moscow. The overall quality for both service and food is absolutely top-notch, plus the location is very unique.
Hello! Thank you for your feedback! We are looking forward to visiting again!
Located on a boat at Krasnopresenskaya River Bank this 5 Star Restaurant transforms into a party location due to multiple groups hosting events. Impressive wine selection, Asian and European kitchen...
Thx a lot! We are waiting for you!
It is a nice place to gather specially at the lounge The service and staff very good I like the river view The food is almost like all restaurants in Russia they serve different cuisine. Staring Russian appetizer till Asian dishes Presentation and taste amazing... I consider it overpriced little bit More
Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.
Had a large group dinner here. Food was above average and service quite good. The real attraction is the view of Moscow from the river on a nice night. Great place for a larger group dinner. More
