The Project Manager is responsible for ensuring design, transportation and any other yacht projects are delivered successfully and timely. It is important that individuals work closely with Finance and Compliance Managers before signing-off any projects. It is crucial that the project is compliant, within budget and able to be delivered successfully. They are good problem solvers to resolve and think off their feet. This is crucial to resolve issues during delivery without compromising the overall project or causing delays. It is important to have a good understanding and relationship with the Client to ensure their vision comes to life.

4 things you need to know about yacht project management

Why a project manager is essential.

Building a superyacht is by no means a simple process, with construction, legal and insurance implications all to weigh up. For this reason, employing an experienced and impartial project manager is essential. To find out more about what this role involves, Boat International spoke to Peter Wilson of MCM in Newport, who are the operational managers of  Sybaris  (pictured above) and are currently managing the construction of a 58 metre Vitruvius -designed Feadship , which is due for launch in early 2019.

“When a client commissions a large yacht project , he would be ill-advised not to engage the services of a knowledgeable and staunch advocate; someone entirely familiar with what is customary within the superyacht building sector but also fiercely independent with no commercial relationships with builders or vendors,” Wilson argues.

“The underlying responsibility of the project manager is to give guidance and protect the client’s best interests in terms of yard and equipment selection, cost versus value, design, materials and construction decisions. These are all choices that will affect his and his family’s use and enjoyment on board.

“His responsibility is to furnish the owner with undistorted advice without conflict of interest, which gives the owner the confidence to make educated decisions. Adhering to these standards will result in much higher degree of likelihood in achieving an on-time, on-budget vessel that meets (and hopefully exceeds) his expectations.”

The role is always evolving

“Project management is a constantly evolving field as various facets of the projects develop,” Wilson explains. “New rules need to be adhered to, such as Tier III compliance for engine emissions (pictured above) and new flag state regulations . These have a direct bearing on the design and construction of the yacht — and there are inevitably attendant operational and cost impacts, which need to be understood and considered. The ability to manage the integration of these mandatory elements — and explain to the client the cause and effect — is one way in which the role is ever-changing.

“Furthermore, as there is an ebb and flow of contracts in the shipyards’ order books , the vessel’s price and the project duration is also a moving target. Insider knowledge of the industry and knowing the health of the candidate shipyards, relative labour rates and materials costs represents important information that one must be familiar with and be able to convey intelligently to the client.”

Refits bring a different set of challenges

The main difference between refit and new-build yacht projects is the potential for surprises cropping up, Wilson adds.

“Even though the vessel may have been well maintained and thoroughly surveyed and inspected, there are frequently things that are impossible to know, prior to cutting some area open. Therefore, there is a need for quick decisions and a high degree of flexibility. Ideally, the project manager needs to be physically close at hand throughout the entire superyacht refit process as one will often need to go on board and discuss various options, consider schedule and cost impact, and how best to serve the owner.”

What you should look out for in a good project manager

When asked for the three key qualities needed in a project manager, Wilson is quick to answer: “Experience, experience, experience”.

“An owner should look for someone who has a long track record in managing projects similar, or more complex, to that which is being contemplated,” he continues. “He should speak with the project manager’s previous clients to get a first-hand opinion of their performance and the success of the project.

“A good project manager also needs to be honest, tenacious and reliable. Ideally a person with hands-on boat-building skills as in many cases, the discussion may happen on the shop floor with the welders and fabricators themselves. Being able to communicate on that level of detail can be invaluable. Additionally, they should be someone with solid commercial and business acumen, with a history of having been to sea in yachts of all types in all conditions; someone who knows what happens on the darkest of nights in big waves, with wind strong enough to blow the oysters off the rocks, because things don’t always go as advertised in the brochure…”

• A 70m Private Dual-Season M/Y is looking for a Deckhand to join them ASAP
• This is an incredible opportunity for someone looking to log some extensive sea time in an expedition-style, off-grid cruising programme.
• The vessel has a genuine off-the-beaten-track itinerary with plans to travel throughout Central America, Europe, Asia and the Pacific. With this in mind, you must have no reservations about vaccinations.
• The ideal candidate will have 1-2 years of experience on a 50m+, only candidates with 1 years proven longevity on their CV will be considered.
• Having your YMO in hand would also be hugely appealing, however you must be competent driving large tenders. Any other skills or qualifications would also be beneficial.
• Due to the vessel's itinerary, you must have a B1B2 visa in hand, unfortunately, this is non-negotiable.

Chief Engineer – 45m+ – Rotational following build!

We're working with a 45m+ new build explorer yacht, due to launch in August this year. They're looking for an experience Chief Engineer to take the yacht through the rest of build, delivery and then sail operationally with the yacht. 

• Y3 ticket or equivalent is a minimum requirement.
• Private AND Charter – the yacht will be dual season, initially cruising Med and Caribbean for the first year, followed by worldwide cruising. 
• This position is full time until after delivery, going rotational following the first 6-7 months. The rotation will be 2:2. 
• Closer to delivery and once operational, you will have assistance from a dual position 2nd engineer / deckhand. 
• Being an explorer operation, there is a lot of water sports involved. If you enjoy water sports / have a skill or qualification in any this is seen as hugely beneficial. 
• Salary is circa €8,000 – €9,500 depending on experience and what you can bring to the table. Discretionary bonus.

Chief Officer – 80m New Build

• Experienced Chief officer required for a Prestigious 80m+ New build due to launch June 2024!

• This is an incredible opportunity to join an exciting newly launched yacht with a World cruising itinerary planned whilst working alongside a fantastic team and established yacht owner

• This position will be to initially join for 1 week in June to meet the team, complete some training and get to grips with the newly launched yacht. You will be then join again in August to rotate out with your rotational partner

• CM3000 required as a minimum and ideally someone working towards, close to or holding Master 3000 qualification. You will need to have completed 2+ years as Chief officer on 60m plus yachts to be considered.

• They are looking for a driven officer with a good eye for detail and able to integrate into the crew seamlessly. They want someone who can keep morale high, lead by example and able to oversaw all the deck operations whilst being a weapon in the bridge

• The yacht will run a busy and varied program with extensive watersports, fishing and diving operations. Interests in these areas would be advantageous but not essential as they already have an abundance of skills within the deck team!

• The yacht will cruise the Med initially for the first season with long terms plans to cruise further afield • This is going to be an exciting, fast paced program initially and they need someone who can think of their feet and outside of the box whilst keeping spirits high

You will be resp onsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and operation of the company's fleet of yachts. This individual will work closely with the vessel team, yacht owners, captains, and crew to ensure that all yachts are in good working order and meet the necessary safety and regulatory standards.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement maintenance and repair schedules for the vessels in the fleet. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all. Collect all necessary equipment lists, manuals and populate vessel PMS as needed.
• Oversee maintenance and repair work, including coordinating with contractors and suppliers as needed
• Ensure that vessels are in compliance with all relevant safety and regulatory standards and implement as needed into department procedures & documentation.

• This is a seasonal position only and will run from now until October, there is potential for it to be full time and the candidate that is just leaving has been there on a permanent basis
• Lovely respectful owner 
• The yacht will be based out of the South of France for the season and will be used as a day boat primarily with some weekend trips 
• There are 3 crew onboard and you will be responsible for cooking for the crew and guests as well as helping out on the interior. This is a real team effort though and everyone mucks in to help out where required! 
• In terms of the cooking side of things. Usually the yacht will head out for the day and guests will depart for lunch somewhere, they will come back on board for the afternoon and then eat a light dinner on board. They prefer classic British food/Mediterranean style cooking. Home cooked style! They are fairly casual in terms of the food so no Michelin stars required! 
• You will have your own cabin however, if you prefer to live ashore that is also fine

• Provide direction and regular updates to the project team, ensuring the team is informed of all project changes, decisions and metrics that may affect the success of the project. Collaborate with senior executives, department representatives and subject matter experts to positively advance project objectives. • Develop and oversee the processes associated with process and outcomes measurement, data tracking and data reporting. • Coordinates and conducts project meetings.   Prepares background material for each meeting.   Follows up on decisions and work assignments resulting from meeting discussions.
• Integral to change management process during project implementation, managing change requests, identifying barriers and mitigating those barriers to promote project success.
• Ensures adherence to regulatory standards and reviews project deliverables.
• Provide operational support to key stakeholders and leaders within the Office of Clinical Affairs.

Required Qualifications*

• A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field plus at least 4 years of applicable, increasingly responsible professional experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience leading change management initiatives.
• Ability to manage cross-functional unit projects and/or teams, which includes project planning, task management, status reporting, etc.
• Proven ability in data interpretation, problem analyses, methodology development, technical execution, and development of strategic recommendations to leadership.
• Strong and effective communicator in both written and verbal forms, including demonstrated ability to present to audiences at all levels of the organization.
• Experience developing a highly interactive and collaborative team environment.

Desired Qualifications*

Job Description

The Office of Research and Policy Innovation (ORPI) brings together four units that provide critical policy-related information through scientific research and evaluation methods to agency leadership. ORPI also supports a broad network of homeless services providers, as the official NYC government partner for federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grants. Housed within ORPI, Federal Homeless Policy and Reporting (FHPR) directs the NYC Continuum of Care (CoC). The CoC is the NYC planning body that develops long-term strategic plans and manages year-round planning efforts to address housing and service needs of persons experiencing homelessness in NYC. FHPR also serves as the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) lead. The HMIS team conducts data-analytic work and produces all federally mandated HMIS reports for NYC. The HMIS team manages the $2 million HMIS grant and oversees multiple vendor contracts necessary to meet grant outcomes. HMIS staff are the agency lead content experts on HMIS and HUD technical requirements. The HMIS team is additionally responsible for managing the annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE) survey of unsheltered individuals, which is required by HUD as part of the Point-In-Time Count. This role will include coordinating with not-for-profit service providers, CoC community stakeholders, homelessness researchers, other city agency staff, and persons with lived experience of homelessness with the goal of successfully implementing HOPE. The CRS II will additionally work on CoC-funded and other homeless housing projects to improve data quality and program performance in HMIS and support reporting to HUD. The position entails considerable latitude for independent judgment and initiative and requires strong analytic skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, managing multiple projects and deadlines. ORPI is recruiting for a City Research Scientist (CRS II) to function as HOPE Project Manager/Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) Analyst, who will serve under supervision of the HMIS Director. As the project manager for HOPE, the CRS II will be responsible for managing all HOPE logistics, including organizing efforts to recruit, train, and direct the hundreds of staff and more than 1,000 volunteers involved in the annual survey effort. HOPE-related Duties and Responsibilities: - Develop and maintain workplans, meeting agendas, and project materials. Track project deliverables and deadlines and work to resolve bottlenecks or other workflow challenges. - Manage communications and coordinate with key stakeholders in DSS, DSS contracted providers, and partner City agencies. - Coordinate and monitor recruitment of volunteers, HOPE district captains, and supporting staff. - Lead efforts to assign survey areas to teams and quality check sample area requirements and survey data, including resolving data issues collected during HOPE. - Organize and lead trainings for city employees, vendors, and members of the public. Partner with agency training department to create training materials including written documents, videos, FAQs, and job aids. - Lead partnerships with CUNY, DoE, NYPD, DHS contracted outreach providers, Parks, MTA, and others as needed. - Lead development and management of HOPE app and dashboard, recruitment website, and email and meetings software systems. - Organize logistics and material support for HOPE training sites across NYC and coordinate citywide operations on the night of HOPE. HMIS-related Duties and Responsibilities: - Gather feedback from community partners on homeless housing projects to inform performance evaluation development and implementation. - Produce and maintain quarterly performance review reports to highlight CoC-funded projects that may require technical assistance or other supports. - Support the CoC’s Performance and Quality Improvement Committee with data analysis and reporting. - Conduct analysis on historical project performance across CoC projects. - Develop and regularly update Data Performance Plan with policies and procedures for the annual evaluation and quarterly reports. - Create and disseminate communications to community stakeholders, including content for CoC website and newsletters related HUD guidance around HMIS data standards, project performance, and workgroup meetings and summaries. - Attend NYC CoC committee and workgroup meetings; communicate HMIS updates/changes to members. - Clean, format, analyze data for federal reporting (HIC-PIT, NOFO).
