TESTIMONIALS

What our crew say.

TYS Recruitment are fantastic, I had the pleasure of working with Ciara and she is without a doubt the friendliest, most attentive agent I’ve worked with she put time into finding me my perfect position and was consistent with her messages so I never felt out of the loop, she is just an all round lovely person to speak with. Ciara still continues to follow up with me even after she found me my perfect position, keeping it professional but with a personal touch. I cannot recommend TYS and Ciara enough so thank you

Taryn has been exceptional in every step of the process from the initial reach out to the phone interview and to my placement in my current position. She was extremely informative about the position and the boat and continued to check in with me throughout the final interview and even as I am still on board. She really did find the perfect “home” for me with the boat, crew, Captian and owners. You have an amazing lady working for you and I can’t thank her enough for making this such an awesome experience!

I got in contact with Eloise at TYS Recruitment regarding a temp job. The communication with Eloise was outstanding. She quickly picked up my contact and she gave me a good overview of what the job implied. She made sure that both parties were happy with each other. I would highly recommend her as she has a very friendly and positive approach. She doesn’t hold you on the line and she cuts to the chase, which is very appreciated in this industry.

What Our Clients Say

The Yacht Stew Recruitment is the best recruitment agency I have worked with, I can highly recommend them. I recently needed to recruit a stewardess for a third interior in my team and was looking for a very specific person to fit our boat. Gemma and her team made this process so easy and left no stone unturned. They immediately knew what I was looking for and they really narrowed it down to great quality candidates. They checked in with me continuously following up on the stewardess they have placed for us.

My experience with TYS Recruitment has been absolutely amazing. The amount of CV’s that came through, the way everything was laid out was highly efficient. Eloise constantly stayed on top of everything and even helped the green stews to understand their joining contract and SEA. Just amazing! TYS Recruitment most definitely stands out as my preferred agent.

I asked TYS Recruitment to assist me in the hiring of a new stew. The team didn’t waste anytime diving in and asking me what kind of Stew I’m looking for and about the program of the vessel. The detail and time spent ensuring the candidates put forward were a complete match was evident. I gained a wonderful new Stew who fitted in very well. They were professional at all times and ensured I was comfortable and happy throughout the whole process. I will not hesitate to use The Yacht Stew again in the future!

Careers in the superyacht industry

A superyacht is defined as any leisure yacht over 24 metres (79 feet) in length. There are many hundreds of superyachts sailing the seas and oceans today – motor or sail, and they employ thousands of crew members from around the world.

Owning or chartering a multi-million-pound superyacht is an exclusive hobby, but behind the glamorous, façade, there is a whole team of skilled workers keeping everything ship-shape. The number of superyachts being built is increasing each year, and there is now a shortage of skilled workers to crew them. Working on a superyacht is certainly not a holiday, but the rewards can be generous and it’s a great way to see the world in style.

Read on to find out all you need to know about what careers are available, the training and certification you will need and more.

Training and qualifications

We outline likely requirements in the job descriptions below, or follow the link here to learn about key areas of superyacht training and certification that you can consider.

The Captain of any yacht (large or small) has one primary duty, which is the safe manning and operation of the yacht. This includes taking full responsibility for the crew, the tenders  and toys, and the guests. Every crew member falls under the ultimate command of the Captain.

Captain on superyacht bridge

Chief Engineer

The Chief Engineer is in charge of the engineering department and is responsible for its safe and efficient operation. He or she reports directly to the Captain. As well as managing the Engineers, Electricians and ETOs (Electronic Technical Officers), the Chief Engineer has overall responsibility for the engineering department.

First & Second Officer

All superyachts generally have a First Officer on board, but larger yachts would employ a Second Officer as well. The roles are quite similar, but specific duties are likely to vary from one yacht to another.

Superyacht first officer at outside bridge

Chief Steward/Stewardess

A Chief Steward or Stewardess is most likely an experienced crew member who has progressed to this higher-ranking role. They are in charge of the interior of the yacht and manages and recruits the interior staff (such as Stewards and Housekeepers). They report directly to the Captain.

Chief Stewardess on a superyacht

On a superyacht, regardless of the size, the food is one thing that a charter guest or an owner will always remember. The Chef plays an incredibly important role and is one of the key figures on board.

Engineer/Assistant Engineer

The main function of the Engineer is to maintain the mechanical and electrical operations of the yacht.  This position will entail very large, complicated jobs, and it can, at the same time, incorporate something as small as fixing a remote control for guests, or fixing a toilet.

Superyacht engineer

Technical Officer/Electrician

Electronic Technical Officers (ETOs) and/or Electricians are generally employed on larger superyachts where the Engineering department comprises around four or five crew. In some instances one person may fulfil both roles, or there may be different individuals for each. If there is no ETO or Electrician on board, their responsibilities would fall to the Engineer. ETOs and Electricians usually report to the Chief Engineer.

Steward / Stewardess

The most important aspect of the Steward/ess role is his/her attention to detail.  This type of position requires the ability to think ahead, provide a service before the guest makes the request and to anticipate events before they happen. Most importantly, you must exhibit the ability to discreetly serve guests in a luxury 6-star manner.

Superyacht stewardess

Second Chef/Sous Chef

On larger yachts, you will often find a Second Cook/Sous Chef who works along side a Chef.  This person will normally bear all responsibilities in cooking for the crew, side work for meal preparation, and assisting the Chef in any variety of ways.  A new-to-industry individual who aspires to be a professional yacht chef will greatly benefit from holding an assistant position.

The Bosun, sometimes known as the Leading Hand or Senior Deckhand, is likely to be an experienced Deckhand who is able to take on extra responsibilities. The Bosun is responsible for maintaining the exterior of the yacht immaculately and is in charge of the Deckhands.

Superyacht bosun

A deckhand is the entry level for almost all professional crew jobs on superyachts. The deckhand position will encompass many responsibilities, but most importantly, he/she will maintain the exterior of the yacht and keep it in pristine condition at all times. You could be the only deckhand on board, but on larger superyachts there may be as many as five or more deckhands working.

The unspoken rules about how to behave on a superyacht

  • The superyachting world is very small, with only 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea.
  • That insularity has bred a specific etiquette, which is often hard for outsiders to know about.
  • These are the de facto rules of the most expensive billionaire toys, superyachts .

Insider Today

For the owners of superyachts , privacy is often the most valuable thing money can buy. It's one reason centimillionaires and billionaires pay eight or nine figures for a palace at sea, far from the prying eyes of land dwellers.

Even the most gossipy crew members should stay tight-lipped about the name of a former owner or charter guest, and many brokers shy away from answering benign questions.

That means that, aside from basic safety guidelines, most of the rules of superyachting are unwritten. The very few who need to know them — there are only about 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea, according to SuperYacht Times — already know them.

But if you do happen to be a lucky guest at a party on a billionaire's $500 million ship or find yourself included in a $1 million-a-week vacation, there are a few things you need to know.

After four days of touring superyachts that sell for as much as $75 million and chatting with the people who buy, sell, and work on them at the Palm Beach International Boat Show , Business Insider gleaned a few key edicts. Given the discreet nature of the industry, almost all the people we spoke with requested anonymity to protect their working relationships, but here's what they had to say.

Take off your shoes

While it's a basic rule for anyone in boating, it may come as a surprise to an outsider that no matter how rich you are or how expensive your heels are, in the vast majority of cases, you can't wear shoes on board.

It's partly for safety — you don't want anyone slipping on a wet deck — but partly to keep the yacht clean. So expect to see barefoot billionaires, and if you forgot to get a pedicure, bring a set of special boat shoes.

Don't make any assumptions about money — but know the signs

In the superyacht world, it's safe to assume almost everyone you meet is very, very rich, and many brokers and builders say you can't judge a book by its cover when it comes to prospective clients.

"It has nothing to do with how they're dressed," one broker told BI. "It's the biggest mistake you can make because a complete slobby-looking guy or couple could be a multibillionaire."

There are, however, a few clues. Watches are one; new footwear is another.

"Rich people always have new shoes," a superyacht expert said. But because of the shoe rule mentioned above, this tip probably applies only when they're on land.

Book your massage early

Wellness areas, including spa rooms with a massage bed or two and a professional-grade facial machine, are becoming must-haves on superyachts . Most have a customized spa menu and a crew member who doubles as a trained masseuse or beautician — and they're usually in high demand.

One captain said he'd implemented a booking system to ensure people weren't fighting for the same spots. A broker said sometimes masseuses would be so busy they wouldn't leave the small spa cabin for hours on end.

Related stories

So if you want to make the most of your relaxing time on board, reserve your pampering slot as soon as you get your welcome cocktail.

Pirates are more real than you'd think, and many superyachts have hidden safe rooms

While you might dress up as a fake pirate for an onboard theme party, there are very real ones — and other dangers — on the high seas.

In certain areas, including parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, pirates are a cause of concern . In the Red Sea, owners are concerned about the Houthis .

Superyachts can come equipped with sonic weaponry, lockdown systems, and anti-drone protection. Builders are even designing safe rooms — which are apparently just as plush as the rest of the ship.

The longer the boat, the closer to $1 billion

While you can't judge a buyer based on appearances, you can judge them on the length of their boat.

One rule of thumb: If someone has a brand-new 50-meter vessel, chances are they have $1 billion to their name. If it's over 100 meters, expect the owner to have at least $2 billion. And for a boat bigger than that — like Jeff Bezos' 127-meter megayacht Koru — it takes many, many billions.

Money can't buy you everything

The world's biggest, most expensive yachts are custom-built by shipyards that produce only a handful of boats a year.

But no matter how many tens of millions of dollars clients are spending, there are things to which builders will refuse to say yes.

"In the end, the boat has our name," an executive from one of the world's biggest shipyards told BI.

They recalled a client who requested a yellow hull to match his Lamborghini . The shipyard declined, steering the client in another direction.

"If I don't like it, I don't build it. I finalize two or three contracts a year," another builder said. "If somebody can say your vessel is ugly, my reputation is bad."

Yacht crews are trained to make the impossible possible. A guest requests fresh caviar flown into the middle of the Caribbean? No problem. Fresh flowers every day while at sea? It'll cost you, but it can be done.

But they can't time travel, and captains and crew members say the thing that causes the most friction is when a client or owner wants to go from point A to point B — right now.

"The hardest request is when they want the boat in a place — yesterday," one captain said.

The best person to know? A friend with a superyacht

Superyachts are expensive to build and expensive to maintain . According to the industry standard, owning a superyacht will cost 10% of its new-build price annually. For a $100 million yacht, that's at least $10 million yearly going to crew, regular maintenance, insurance, fuel, and dockage.

Chartering, too, is costly . Beyond the list price, which can be hundreds of thousands a week, guests must pay for provisions, which are pegged at 35% of the charter fee, and are expected to tip between 10% and 20%.

So the most important unspoken rule of superyachting is actually that the only thing better than owning a superyacht is knowing someone else who does — and invites you along, of course.

“I recommend you try and track down Splinter Fangman,” says Martin Redmayne, chair of the Superyacht Group, which researches and publishes on the industry. “He’s made for TV.”

If you need to park your superyacht in the south of France, he’s one of a handful who are the brokers for berths large enough for billionaires.

Despite his Wild West name, Fangman is clean cut and gently tanned. He’s a broker for international yacht dealer Edmiston, the agent for new leaseholds for superyacht berths in Port Vauban in Antibes, between Cannes and Nice.

The port has one area known as the Quai des Milliardaires — the Billionaires’ Quay, officially called Quai Camille Rayon — recently redeveloped by the International Yacht Club d’Antibes. All the leases came up for renewal in the past two years.

That included A18, one of the “iconic” slips in the Mediterranean, according to Fangman. It can take a yacht of 160 metres and it was announced it had been sold last month.

Fangman won’t reveal the asking price. Smaller berths on the same stretch are A13, suitable for a 110m yacht, which is currently on the market for €13mn for a 10-year lease. A5, a mere 85m, is available for €8.4mn on the same terms.

There are only so many people with yachts that size.

One of them is Jeff Bezos, whose schooner the Koru, with three masts and sails, hit the water last year. At 127m, more than one and a half Airbus A380s, it is a prime example of the difficulties superyacht owners are facing. When he tried to moor in Fort Lauderdale in Florida, no berth was big enough, so the Koru had to take shelter in an industrial area of Port Everglades, with multicoloured shipping containers and steel gantries as its neighbours.

Yachting season is on its way, and the Koru has made its way across the Atlantic into the Mediterranean and, after passing by Gibraltar, at the time of writing it has stopped in a shipyard near Marseille. His is not the only big boat now on the move.

You are seeing a snapshot of an interactive graphic. This is most likely due to being offline or JavaScript being disabled in your browser.

superyachts jobs

“Typically, now, you see a lot of marinas are still a little bit empty because a lot of the boats are in the shipyards,” says Fangman. “In about two weeks’ time, you’ll see all the marinas in the south of France and different cruising areas start filling up, with the boats kind of positioning themselves, waiting for charters, waiting for owner trips.”

The race for the largest yacht is well documented but the place to put that yacht is beginning to get more complicated. While ports such as Cannes and Ibiza rent spots for festivals and events, there is the question of where you station your boat longer term.

Most boats of all sizes only spend 10 per cent of their time cruising, says Martin Redmayne. The rest of the time is spent docked. “So therefore people have this thought process: we need a place called home.” That’s not just for the owners but also for long-term crew members — a place to buy houses and send their children to school.

The increase in numbers of the mid-sized superyachts, which are usually 40m-80m, means there’s increased competition to get a permanent spot. The “home berth” ports include Barcelona’s Port Vell, which has a good shipyard nearby, but is half a day’s sail from the cruising grounds of the Balearics. Porto Montenegro in the Bay of Kotor is also considered a prime leisure port. For the south of France, Vauban is one of the few that can accommodate the biggest boats.

“No more than 15 per cent of the berths will be on long lease,” says Redmayne. “But taken as a percentage of the bigger berths, above 50m, it may be 40 per cent.”

Leaseholders can rent out their spots to other boats to recoup some of their costs. At Port Vauban, around 80 per cent of subletting income is returned to the owner, according to Fangman.

A nine-year leasehold for a 100m yacht in Porto Montenegro is currently available for €7.72mn. But as with property, location is everything and Port Vauban remains the most sought after on the coast.

A18 is currently empty, according to open data maps that track ship positioning, at the time of going to press. Sitting alongside it in the Quai in other prime slots are the 78m-Montkaj, the 65m-Zazou and the Sibelle, a 67m yacht with five “staterooms” — more normally called bedrooms — and a wellness area. It is on sale for €27.5mn.

The Dilbar, the largest yacht in the world by volume, used to occupy the A18 slot, says Fangman. Gulbakhor Ismailova, the sister of Uzbek-Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, was placed under sanctions on the grounds that she was the legal owner of some of Usamov’s assets, including the Dilbar. It has left the port.

The problem facing marinas is how to accommodate the larger boats. It is due to the growing number of yachts above 40m, which are trying to dock in marinas that were built for much smaller boats.

“Owners are starting to understand that the berth supply is quite stagnant,” says Fangman. “It is extremely complicated to start a new marina, especially in the south of France [due to zoning issues and a lack of sheltered harbours]. With more and more boats on the water . . . the supply imbalances are getting out of proportion.”

Redmayne concurs. “Because we’re building so many boats here and we’re not able to reconfigure marinas quick enough. And to build a brand new marina takes 10 to 15 years of planning and local authority approvals so we’re heading for a bit of a logjam.”

Pressure is also building for mid-sized superyachts, “40m to 60m, of which there are about 1,000, and 60m-80m yachts, of which there are 500,” says Redmayne.

“These are relatively small numbers in the grand scheme of the number of ultra-wealthy, but you can see how the market has grown since 2000,” he says, referring to data from his research team.

It isn’t just a safe harbour. Boat owners are also looking for facilities. While major repairs happen in shipyards, a marina needs to be able to provide some technical services.

But it also needs to provide a good place to hang out. Antibes’ port was getting “a little bit tired and old”, says Redmayne. “If you look at the south of France now, a lot of the marinas are close to the end of their concession, so this is the start of a whole wave of upgrades.” Concessions are granted to private companies to run the marinas for up to 50 years. They, in turn, sell on the leases.

The International Yacht Club d’Antibes, under its new 20-year concession, has given its section of a marina a €135mn upgrade, including a new reception area for helipad users, social and fitness areas for crew and a new club house built by the award-winning architect Philippe Prost. His other commissions include the Ring of Memory, a centennial first world war memorial in Ablain-Saint-Nazaire that takes the form of a 75m-wide ribbon of concrete.

No Fort Lauderdale berth was big enough for Bezos’s boat, so it took shelter in an industrial area of Port Everglades, with shipping containers as its neighbours

Also added to the IYCA area of Port Vauban is privacy. It now has high-grade maritime security installed. “There are gates, you have to be registered to get in, which is quite attractive to large yacht owners,” says Fangman, who cites the issues around Kaos, a 110m superyacht moored in Ibiza that was vandalised with paint by eco-activists last summer.

For smaller boat owners, long-term leaseholds are less likely due to price. But for larger ones, buying a leasehold over renting seems relatively small beer.

“It’s a luxury, but it makes sense,” says Fangman, “if you have a boat for a few hundred million, to spend a bit extra and maybe even have multiple [berths]. There may be five favourite places where someone goes. It makes sense to buy in those main places where you have trouble getting a spot.”

Mylor Yacht Harbour has a modern and spacious marina which is protected from the prevailing South Westerly winds and offers a sheltered haven for yachts persons and those wishing to enjoy spending time on the water - with everything a boat owner could need in one place.

Originally the most westerly Naval Dockyard and victualling station in England, then home of HMS Ganges and the Packet ships and centre for the French Resistance during the Second World War, Mylor, now home to the last fleet of Oyster fishing boats under sail, is a haven for water-lovers of all types, whether you enjoy crabbing with the children off the pontoon, cruising local waters or racing further offshore.

Boasting some of the finest sheltered waters in the UK, the Carrick Roads offers a great base for sailing , boat charter and other water sports such as kayaking, paddle boarding, windsurfing and much more. There are many yacht racing events, both local and national, that take place throughout the season in the area.

The entire area is protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, from the mouth which has St Anthony Lighthouse (aka Fraggle Rock) to one side and Pendennis Castle to the other, deep into the tree lined creeks to Truro. It is home to many wading birds, seals and otters, not to mention all the basking sharks and dolphins that come into the Roads to feed.

Mylor Yacht Harbour is a centre of excellence for the care and restoration of yachts and motor boats, providing a full complement of services afloat and ashore. We offer a range of services, backed up by comprehensive shore-side facilities for the boat owner, from one of the most beautiful locations on the South Coast. Mylor Yacht Harbour – so much more than a marina

For many, we’re Cornwall’s finest full-service boatyard, where our skilled and experienced Marine Team helpfully handle any problem.

For more, we’re a first class pontoon berth or safe mooring; a welcoming yacht haven and village afloat, anchored by the country’s finest sailing waters (our opinion, maybe – but we won’t be swayed).

For others, we’re a luxury seaside retreat, with blissful water views from contemporary self-catering cottages crafted from historic cottages.

And for local coastal walkers, we’re a great café and restaurant with a very nice harbour attached.

Mylor has many identities. For all – visitors, clients, neighbours and friends alike – it is much more than a marina. It is a destination.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Roberto Cavalli, flamboyant Italian fashion designer, dies aged 83

Designer launched own label in 1970 with leather then denim innovations, while his exotic and flashy style found celebrity fans in the 90s

  • Roberto Cavalli: a life in pictures

Roberto Cavalli, the Italian fashion designer known for his glamorous designs, colourful prints and scores of celebrity fans, has died in Florence at the age of 83.

His rich aesthetic, which featured flamboyant prints inspired by the worlds of exotic flora and fauna, high hemlines and even lower waistlines, was unapologetically sexy. His lifestyle was equally lavish, with his main residence a 13-hectare (32-acre) Tuscan estate featureing a vineyard, tanning machine, racehorses, Ferraris and a menagerie of animals including parrots, iguanas, a Persian cat, a monkey and tiger.

His estate also included a personal helicopter and a superyacht called Freedom. Its design was inspired by the movie Batman.

Cavalli launched his eponymous label in 1970 and made a name for himself when he patented a new way of printing on leather. He showcased his revolutionary technique for the first time in his debut collection in Paris, which featured a pink leather evening gown. Cavalli immediately earned commissions from French houses including Hermès and Pierre Cardin.

He later turned his skills to denim. His autumn/winter ’94 collection showed the first ever pair of sand-blasted jeans and the following year he worked with Lycra to invent stretch jeans. The form-fitting jeans were an instant success, leading him to launch a dedicated line, Cavalli Jeans, later renamed Just Cavalli.

British singer Victoria Beckham with Italian Cavalli in 2005.

He was adored by celebrities. In his early years, Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren frequented his store, Limbo, in Saint-Tropez. However, it was during the hedonistic 90s that his flashy and flamboyant aesthetic really exploded. Thanks to David and Victoria Beckham, Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez, a new aspiring and affluent demographic discovered the brand.

Cavalli began to expand his fashion empire comprising branded underwear, eyewear, footwear, watches and perfume. Homeware, pet attire, vodka, wines, restaurants and members’ clubs followed.

Despite its popularity, in 2014 the business began to post annual losses. A year later the family sold a 90% stake to the Italian private equity firm Clessidra, reportedly valuing the business at €390m. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2019 and later that year it was bought by the Dubai-based Vision Investment Company.

In October 2020, the Sicilian designer Fausto Puglisi was appointed creative director. In a statement from the brand announcing Cavalli’s death, Puglisi wrote: “Dear Roberto, you may not be physically here with us any more, but I know I will feel your spirit with me always.

Cavalli takes a bow after a Milan fashion week show in 2014.

“It is the greatest honour of my career to work under your legacy and to create for the brand you founded with such vision and style. Rest in peace you will be missed, and you are loved by so many that your name will continue on, a beacon of inspiration for others, and especially for me.”

Giorgio Armani paid tribute to his fellow Italian fashion designer and described him as a “true artist”.

In a post shared by the Armani account on X, he said: “I cannot imagine a vision of fashion more distant from mine than that of Roberto Cavalli, yet I have always had enormous respect for him: Roberto was a true artist, wild and wonderful in his use of prints, capable of transforming fantasy into seductive clothes.

“I have learnt with great sadness of his passing: his Tuscan verve will be greatly missed.”

Victoria Beckham shared a tribute on her Instagram stories, posting a photo of herself holding hands with Cavalli while he had his hand raised and made the peace sign. “So sorry to hear the sad news of Roberto’s passing. He’ll forever be an icon.”

The Brazilian model Adriana Lima posted a photograph of herself and Cavalli on X and wrote: “Unapologetic in style & spirit. We lost a legend today. Rest in Peace.”

American singer and actor Jennifer Hudson wrote on the platform: “Roberto Cavalli was always one of my favorite designers. A true artist in every sense of the word!

“He made the world a more beautiful place and will be dearly missed. May he rest in peace!”.

Cavalli was born in 1940 in a small village in Tuscany. His grandfather, Giuseppe Rossi, was a celebrated artist and member of the Macchiaioli movement. Cavalli later moved with his mother, a seamstress, and siblings to Florence after the murder of his father by German soldiers. It was while studying at the Academy of Art in Florence in 1957 that he began experimenting with textiles.

He married his first wife, Silvanella Giannoni, in 1964 and had two children. They divorced in 1974 and in 1980 he married Eva Duringer, a former Miss Universe contestant he met while judging the pageant in 1977. The couple had three children and Eva became his business partner. The couple worked together until they sold the business. They divorced in 2010.

In 2023 he announced the birth of his sixth child, a son, with his partner, the Swedish model and actor Sandra Nilsson.
