I heard three words at the 2013 Annapolis boat show that stopped me in my tracks: “the Chinese market.” Since the early 1970s we’ve seen plenty of sailboats built in China for U.S. or European markets — with famously inconsistent results — but never before this year had I encountered a boatyard targeting Chinese sailors.

A conversation with Dutch yacht designer Maarten Voogd enlightened me on that score. For more than two decades Simonis-Voogd Design has been turning out winning IMS maxis and production models for such companies as Dehler and The Moorings. Several years ago Voogd teamed up with the builders at Shanghai Far East Boats Co. Ltd. to develop one-design keelboats. In 2010, the Fareast 26 class was recognized in the China Cup International Regatta and the China City Club Regatta. Today 100 of these boats are sailing in China.

Before starting the Fareast 26 project, Shanghai Far East had become a leading builder of Optimist dinghies and rigid inflatable boats with a capacity of 5,000 boats per year. Voogd, having previously witnessed the same uneven quality from Chinese builders that we’ve seen, remarked on two things about the work from this builder. First, its craftsmanship with resin-infused composite construction is top-notch. Second, where its own expertise isn’t to that level, it brings in the help and suppliers it needs from outside. Voogd travels about once a month from Holland to Shanghai to coordinate design and construction.

The Fareast 26 we sailed proved the point. “I’m completely impressed with the Fareast fiberglass work,” said BOTY judge Ed Sherman. Rigs from Seldén and deck gear from Harken are nothing short of the industry standard for quality.

In its dimensions, the Fareast 26 is roughly comparable to a J/80. Her bow is more plumb, giving a waterline nearly a foot and a half longer on the similar 26-foot overall length. The slightly higher displacement of 3,648 pounds works out to a displacement-to-length ratio of 126, compared to 122 on the J/80. The sail-area-to-displacement ratio of both boats comes in at 27.

The Fareast cockpit is extremely spacious. As Voogd told us, Chinese sailors tend not to own boats individually but rather to share ownership through sailing clubs. Accordingly, this cockpit accommodates eight people.

As with many of the other sea trails in October, we sailed the Fareast in very light air. In a whisper that scarcely ruffled the Severn River surface, we gurgled along happily at 3.6 knots. As testament to the boat’s sailing ability even in those conditions, we never put the outboard on its bracket.

A lifting bulb keel makes the Fareast eminently trailerable, even ramp-launchable, while still providing more than 1,300 pounds of ballast 5½ feet below the water. The $50,000 sailaway price makes this fun boat a remarkable value.

1997 Grand Banks East Bay 38 HAWK is hull #48 of the Eastbay 38 Series from Grand Banks.  The 38 was the first of the Eastbay models introduced by Grand Banks in 1993.  One of the best running hulls ever designed by Ray Hunt she was an overnight success and spawned an entire series of Eastbays from the venerable builder of the finest Trawler Yachts in the world at that time.  Her soft ride at any speed is now legendary and the benchmark for speed purposed Downeast style yachts.  Eastbay was then, and in many respects still is, the yardstick for the breed because in the Eastbay 38, Grand Banks was able to combine elegant looks, speed, cruising comfort and exemplary interior woodwork, all in a hull designed by an industry legend.  In its Singapore and Malaysia factories, Grand Banks turned out about 140 Eastbay 38s from ’93 through 2005 when she was replaced by the EB 39, a slightly longer, 1 inch wider hull which carried less fuel.  The consensus among the Downeast yachting crowd is the 39 never lived up to her older sister’s performance and comfort standards as far as ride and efficiency. Sky's international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn explains how Iran may retaliate after Israel hit the country's embassy in Syria last week.

Tensions in the Middle East have been growing since the deadly Damascus attack, which killed a top Iranian military general.

An update from the Gaza health ministry this morning. 

At least 33,634 Palestinians have been killed and 76,214 injured in Israel's military offensive in Gaza since 7 October, the Gaza health ministry said in a statement on Friday. 

In the past 24 hours, 89 Palestinians were killed and 120 were injured, the ministry added. 

The ministry's figures do not differentiate between civilians and fighters, but it says the majority of those killed were women and children.

The White House has appeared to row back on comments made by the head of a significant US aid agency on famine in Gaza. 

Samantha Power, the administrator of the US Agency for International Development, said it was "credible" to assess that famine had already started there. 

But White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted repeatedly on Thursday that famine conditions in parts of Gaza were only "imminent".

"That is why we're doing everything we can to uptick, obviously, the humanitarian aid" arriving into Gaza, Ms Jean-Pierre said, noting that the number of trucks carrying aid into Gaza has increased dramatically in recent days.

"We know how dire the situation is in Gaza, so we are certainly deeply concerned about these reports," Jean-Pierre said.

"We have been working around the clock to get more of that aid into Gaza."

She added that the US would "continue to push Israel to increase the flow" of aid.

Under US pressure, Israel has promised to ramp up aid to Gaza dramatically, saying last week it would open another cargo crossing and surge more trucks than ever before into the besieged Palestinian territory.

But days later, there are few signs of those promises materialising and international officials say starvation is widespread in hard-hit northern Gaza.

Israel says it has dramatically increased the number of aid trucks entering the territory, but UN workers report only a slight uptick.

A likely retaliatory attack on Israel will be calculated with the aim of avoiding major escalation, Iranian sources have told Reuters news agency.

They say this was communicated to the US and that Iran will not act hastily.

Iran has been threatening a response for the suspected Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which killed a top Iranian commander. 

Iran's message to Washington was conveyed by Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian during a visit on Sunday to the Gulf Arab state of Oman, which has often acted as an intermediary between Tehran and Washington, the sources said.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment on any messages from Iran, although they said the US has told Iran it was not involved in the strike on the consulate. 

A source familiar with US intelligence was not aware of the message conveyed via Oman but said Iran has "been very clear" that its response to the attack in Damascus would be "controlled" and "non-escalatory". 

They added Iran planned "to use regional proxies to launch a number of attacks on Israel". 

Iran has been considering its response for close to two weeks now as it appears it does not want a wider war in the Middle East. 

The country's foreign ministry has urged citizens to avoid travel to the Middle East as fears of escalation rise. 

In particular, it told people to keep away from Israel, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories. 

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also joined the UK in calling for Iran to show restraint ahead of a likely retaliation against Israel. 

"Right now it's very important for everyone to maintain restraint so as not to lead to a complete destabilisation of the situation in the region, which doesn't exactly shine with stability and predictability," Mr Peskov said.

Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant and his US counterpart Lloyd Austin have discussed Washington's "ironclad" commitment to Israel's security as it faces a threat from Iran.

We reported last night that Mr Gallant told the defence secretary in a phone call that an Iranian attack on Israel would "require an appropriate Israeli response".

The Pentagon said in an update that Mr Austin echoed Joe Biden's "unequivocal message" to Benjamin Netanyahu and "assured minister Gallant that Israel could count on full US support to defend Israel against Iranian attacks, which Tehran has publicly threatened".

It added that US general for the Middle East Michael "Erik" Kurilla had moved forward a visit to Israel in order for him to meet with the country's military top brass and discuss "current security threats."

The risks of the Gaza war expanding into a much bigger regional conflict had seemed to have subsided. Not any longer.

Comments from Iranian and American leaders in the last 24 hours may be entirely predictable but they raise the prospects of escalation.

Iran knows it's been directly attacked in the airstrike on its embassy in Damascus and unless it retaliates it is weakened.

And in this region that is dangerous.

So on Wednesday, celebrating the end of Ramadan, Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei issued a stern warning that Israel must be punished and will be.

The US president knows the attack presumed by most to have been the work of its ally Israel violated international law which declares embassies 'inviolable'.

And Joe Biden's relations with the man who almost certainly ordered it, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are rock bottom.

But the US president also knows any sign of weakness on his part is dangerous, too.

It would only embolden Iran to do its worst and that in turn would provoke Israel to do the same - potentially setting the entire region alight.

So Mr Biden has declared his ironclad support for Israel and raised the prospect of America becoming directly involved if war were to break out between its ally and Iran.

It is exactly the same calculus that led the US president to send two naval carrier groups to the waters off Israel in the wake of the 7 October attacks by Hamas to warn Iran - 'don't get involved'.

That move was successful. This time Mr Biden may need to do more. Iran has shown remarkable restraint holding back in this war despite frequent attacks by Israel on its assets and allies in Syria and Lebanon.

It has done so by claiming those attacks were not direct strikes on Iran itself.

The logic is clear. The ayatollahs are weak at home after the biggest uprising against its rule since its revolution and a regional war would be devastating.

But a direct attack on an embassy can't be overlooked. The Iranians have made that clear.

They believe they have to retaliate. But by the same logic, they may try to calibrate their response to avert a regional conflagration.

The region watches and waits.

The balance of stability in the Middle East hangs on Tehran's decision.

The US is expecting an Iranian attack against Israel - but not one significant enough to pull Washington into the war, according to a US official.

The White House has warned Iran not to use any such attack as a means to escalate further in the region.

Iranian sources said Tehran has assured Washington it will not act hastily in its response to an apparent Israeli strike on its consulate building in Syria last week - and will avoid major escalation.

Israel has not commented on the claim it was involved in the strike which killed two senior military commanders, but the US military believes the country was responsible.

Joe Biden said earlier this week that the US's support for Israel was "ironclad" on Iran.

Last night, the UK's Foreign Secretary David Cameron said he was "deeply concerned" about a possible Iranian "miscalculation" after Tehran vowed to retaliate to an apparent Israeli attack on its embassy in Syria. 

His comments came after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Iranian threats of a missile strike on Israel were "unacceptable". 

Tensions in the Middle East have been growing since the deadly Damascus attack last week, which killed a top Iranian military general.
