The Figaro BENETEAU 3 is the first production foiling one-design monohull ever to be designed. A distillation of technology and innovation, it results from a collaboration between group BENETEAU’s best experts and the Van Peteghem Lauriot-Prévost (VPLP) office, the architects of the two last boats to win the Vendée Globe. Riding the bull: Meet the Figaro 3

Like almost everybody I love racing boats. There is this certain feeling of looking at a thoroughbred racer, purely designed to run as fast as it can, no comforts whatsoever, with skipper and crew just links between sheets, ropes and carbon. This fascination is equally vivid for the big high-end racing machines like the foiling IMOCAs or the super-trimarans , the Class 40 -circus and the Classse-Mini . New boats like the Dehler 30 OD fascinate me as well as the new “smaller” boats for more professional skippers. Speaking of which we must inevitably arrive at the Figaro 3 by Beneteau.

This boat has thrilled a lot of racing skippers as well as ordinary “spare time”-sailors like me: I know that because I saw the crowds admiring the prototype of the Figaro 3 when first shown in Paris . Last week I was fortunate to catch Luc Joessel of Beneteau and despite the crazy workschedules and stresses imposed by the Corona-crisis, he agreed to do an interview on the Figaro 3 – so here we go …

NO FRILLS SAILING.com | Lars Reisberg: “Luc, it´s a pleasure having you here – at least virtually due to Covid 19 – thanks for taking your precious time for this interview! At first, please tell me about your position and responsibility within Beneteau, some dates on your background and maybe some info on your past engagements.”

Luc Joessel: “Hi Lars, pleasure is on my side. I have been with Beneteau for two years now. I am part of the Marketing-team where we are developing the new products for the brand, myself as a product manager focusing on the sailing range. Regarding my past, I have worked for more than 20 years now in the marine industry. First in the United Kingdom with Spinlock. Then with North Sails in France,  mostly in Marketing & Communication and in Sales.”

NFS.com: “I wanted to talk with you on the Figaro 3 which is now out there for 2 years sailing the seas. Did you have an active role in the Figaro 3-development? What is your current job when it comes to the Figaro 3 in particular?”

Luc Joessel: “No, unfortunately not. The Figaro 3 had been developed before I joined Beneteau. The fleet was starting to being built in our dedicated Cheviré factory when I arrived. My role regarding this particular boat is to be the link between Beneteau, the Figaro class and the sailors. So back in  the years 2018, 2019 I worked with the production team to organize factory tours and afterwards the deliveries. Together with my colleagues from the sales team we organize sea trials and try to push the sales of the boat. Last not least, I helped the communication team to launch the boat at the Paris boat show. Finally, last year 2019 was the first full racing season so it was a pretty strenuous and busy season too.”

NFS.com: “How is the boat performing so far? For example in terms of sales success – how many units have been built and, or sold?”

Luc Joessel: “So far the whole venture is quite successful I would say. We have built 90 boats in total and to date around 70 units have been sold in Europe, some went to America and Asia too.”

NFS.com: “How is the class accepting the new boat and what´s the feedback from both pro and amateur sailors on the F3?”

Luc Joessel: “The Figaro 3 is the first foil-assisted offshore one-design boat in the world. No one before Beneteau ever built a boat like this. And I would say that Figaro-skippers are the best singlehanded sailors on the planet. So, the first racing season has been pretty intense. Everyone – and that includes Beneteau – has a few interesting challenges but we had a fantastic first year on the water with a fleet of nearly 50 boats racing the main event of the year, which is La Solitaire du Figaro . Reviewing the comment, I shall say that the initial feedback from them is good, this is a demanding boat for sure and the learning curve is steep.”

NFS.com: “What are the strongest points on the Figaro 3, as well in comparison to the Figaro 2 ?”

Luc Joessel: “The Figaro 3 is a modern offshore boat. Every Figaro has to be a state-of-the-art boat when we launch it. It is the briefing by the class: Keep it for 10 years to protect the skipper´s investments, as most of them own their boats, and make the class attractive. So, for example Figaro 1 was the first offshore one-design boat with water ballast-tanks. Figaro 2 introduced a full-carbon rig as standard, twin rudders and was ISO certified as Category A. Now, Figaro 3 has all of this, except that foils are replacing water ballast-tanks. As you know, almost all of the composite is infused, the sailplan is more modern with the rig moved aft, square top mainsail, A-sails on a fixed carbon bowsprit and so on. And of course it´s an ISO Cat A boat too. So in my opinion this is the perfect offshore boat for the decade to come!”

NFS.com: “How would you describe the sailing characteristics of the Figaro 3? What is it like to sail this boat?”

Luc Joessel: “You should try it as well – that boat is pure fun! Fast, very responsive, a lot of work. When you start sailing Figaro 3, you obviously focus on the foils which are the “new thing” but in fact you really quickly forget them as they are very easy to operate. They work like daggerboards below 10 knots and add their magic turbo effect above 10 or 11 knots of boat speed. Figaro 3 actually follows the new trend in offshore racing: Just like the latest IMOCAs with their giant foils the limit in performance today is probably not the boat but the skipper. There is so much power that if you want to perform for the whole duration of the race you need to take care of yourself … otherwise you will be quickly burnt. The first ever race of the class with the new boat was double-handed, the Sardinha Cup by Beneteau. The guys pushed hard, breeze was on and when they stopped after the first leg the main question essentially was: “How are we going to do it when we sail singlehanded?!?” But they learned and sailed an awesome season afterwards.”

NFS.com: “Did any specific details of the Figaro 3 or learnings from her development influence the development of later boats, maybe also Oceanis -boats or the new First Yacht -range?”

Luc Joessel: “Although they bring a lot of stability and therefore comfort, it is hard to imagine foils on a cruising boat today: This technology takes up lots of space inside and it´s still quite expensive. However, we worked with top quality suppliers for Figaro 3, like Multiplast and use most of them for the First Yacht 53 too. Namely that´s North Sails, although every Figaro skipper is free to choose his brand of sails, Lorima/Sparcraft spars, Harken deck gear, Lemer cast iron/lead keel and so on. So in a way, yes of course, Figaro 3 had an impact on the other product ranges we offer.”

NFS.com: “What was the most impressive or surprising thing for you personally about the Figaro 3 when you sailed her?”

Luc Joessel: “Helming the Figaro 3 is a treat and any sailor can sail safely with full main and the big kite. These 160 square metres in total and up to 20 knots are very impressive. I remember sailing the boat with the press and Beneteau dealers in Newport in those kind of conditions: Everyone felt safe and we´ve had a lot of fun. Reaching high speeds with this boat – between 15 and 20 knots – is relatively easy too. Going further up to 25 knots is another story but most of the pros already reached speeds well in excess of 20 knots.”

NFS.com: “Apart from the French Figaro-class, who is buying the F3 as private owners – what are these people like?”

Luc Joessel: “Oh, we have a quite an interesting mix of profiles. Owners either coming from bigger fully-crewed boats who are sick of chasing crews and want “to do everything on the boat”, seasoned shorthanded amateur skippers … it´s a wide range. But what they all have in common is that they are passionate and experienced sailors for sure.”

NFS.com: “What is the future of the Figaro 3 like – especially the plans to have this boat instated as the new Olympic offshore boat?”

Luc Joessel: “Well as I said before, we sold mostly in Europe and a few in America and Asia. So we are looking at expanding our customer base where we see potential. For example, except in Sweden we do not have any boat in Northern Europe and we only have one in the Mediterranean – there´s a lot to do for us. And we are looking for opportunities in Australia and New Zealand too. I would say that shorthanded offshore racing is growing everywhere in the world for sure so we should be able to convince a few more owners. Interest usually starts once we have a boat in the country. As far as the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 are concerned, it is great news to have this new mixed doublehanded offshore discipline there. And of course it would be great to have a French boat! It is still early days though, we know that Figaro 3 could do the job and as many other manufacturers we are talking to World Sailing … well, I guess time will tell.”

Many thanks, Luc, for this exciting insight to Beneteau´s racing division and the Figaro 3-performance. I personally would love to catch a ride on one of these. Maybe, when the C19-craze is over and we can travel more freely, we can have a short dash out next time in in the yard.

Beneteau Figaro 3 on test

There has been much speculation about the Figaro 3, which is by far the most radical production offshore racer yet devised. Rupert Holmes travelled to Catalonia to put the prototype through its paces.

The Beneteau Figaro 3 has a lot riding on it. For a start it’s the world’s first production foiling offshore monohull and, unlike most other innovative designs today, it’s also one that we can be sure of seeing in large numbers.

Over the past 15 years its predecessor, the Figaro 2, has proved extraordinarily successful in maintaining a position at the top of the professional solo and double-handed racing scene. In doing so it has launched the careers of dozens of well known sailors, particularly in France, where many skippers are household names.

The new boat therefore has a lot to live up to, both in terms of performance and reliability – many Figaro 2s have clocked up more than 75,000 miles of hard offshore racing without significant problems. While it’s tempting to keep going back to that boat to make comparisons, the reality is the latest incarnation is a very different beast and the old boat was certainly not as ground breaking at the time of its launch.

It’s rare to find a boat that’s designed to such a demanding brief as the Figaro 3. It would have been easy to take a more conservative path, but that’s not the nature of Figaro sailors. The result is simply spectacular – a cutting edge design that well clearly set the benchmark against which other boats are judged for a long time.

There’s also potential for appeal outside the confines of the Solitaire de Figaro circuit and Beneteau certainly expects to sell boats to a wider client base than was the case with the Figaro 2. The boat has not been designed for IRC optimisation, so those looking at handicap racing may be disappointed, but it would be a very exciting prospect if enough boats fall into private hands for one-design racing outside of the Solitaire.

Why Beneteau’s new foil-assisted Figaro 3 is big news for sailing

In the new Figaro 3, Groupe Beneteau is producing the first series-built production monohull with foils. It is a strong message that is sure to have a knock-on effect, both for racing and yacht production.

For those in any doubt as to whether foiling will make it into mainstream sailing, news that Beneteau is to produce a radical new one-design Figaro 3 fleet with foils should put this question to rest.

Beneteau unveiled renderings of the Figaro 3, the first production-built monohull with foils at the Paris Boatshow in December. Leading French design firm VPLP has drawn a contemporary looking race boat, but it is the parts sticking out of the sides like spiders’ legs that are causing a real stir.

These novel looking foils are designed to replace the traditional weighty ballast tanks used on past Figaro models. Described as ‘asymmetric tip foils’ they work by creating side force to supplement the skinny keel and reduce leeway while causing minimal drag. An important factor is also that they are able to retract within the boat’s maximum beam.

In short foils can herald a step-change – a Figaro 3 with foils working is expected to be up to 15 per cent faster than its predecessor.

Bar the carbon mast, bowsprit and foils, the Figaro 3 is still built in conventional foam sandwich fibreglass and polyester. But it stands to be considerably faster than its predecessor

The Figaro has been a reasonably conventional and durable one-design class that has served as the training and proving platform for aspiring solo offshore racing sailors, many of whom have then moved up to the IMOCA 60 fleet. The Figaro 3 will replace its predecessor when the Solitaire, the championship of the solo Figaro circuit, marks its 50 th anniversary in 2019. Do not presume however that Beneteau might solely be doing such a project for the typically 40-strong Solitaire fleet. The new Figaro 3 is a Category A ocean-rated boat and we can envisage worldwide appeal, particularly in the burgeoning shorthanded offshore racing scene.

“We think we can go more international with this boat,” said,” said Bénéteau’s sailboat marketing director Guinguido Girotti, who coordinated the project for Beneteau and heads its new racing division. Think distance races and short-handed offshore racing worldwide and the potential for this Figaro looks exciting.

“I think there is also potential for this boat to attract buyers outside the Figaro fleet,” our shorthanded sailing expert Pip Hare agreed. “For crewed offshore racing it could be a lot of fun. And yes I would absolutely love to sail one solo!”

Looking at where Beneteau’s first foil project could lead, Girotti replies, “We are fully industrialising a system… I think we have a technological advantage over anyone else. It [foils] could become mainstream for First or SunFast models from here on – with a fast implementation. This is not a prototype.”

Clever thinking behind the Figaro 3 design

Obviously to be able to generate enough lift for a sailing yacht to foil, the boat has to be kept very light. The target displacement of the Figaro 3 is 2,900kg – 200 kilos less than the Figaro 2. The Figaro 3 is slightly smaller than the Figaro 2, yet a look at the polars shows she will potentially be between five to 10 per cent faster on most sail points and only slower in full downwind mode.

The foils are not designed to lift the boat out of the water, but to eliminate the need for water ballast tanks by creating side force to help the keel. “More righting moment for less weight means that in general you have a much more powerful boat,” Girotti told me.

It is reliability that comes first for this class however. Crucial to the design is that the foils retract to within the max beam of the boat and that they do so well above the waterline to maintain structural and watertight integrity in the case of impact.

It’s one thing to use foils to improve righting moment and performance when sailing at full speed in plenty of water. But I wonder how practical foils will be for a tight-knit class that predominantly races in variable winds, strong tides and rocky shores of Normandy, Brittany and the south coast of the UK.

The potential for these foils to strike another boat or an unidentified floating object is a concern. The brief for the Figaro 3 therefore, which will be adopted by the Figaro class from 2019, was to be as reliable as her predecessor. VPLP designer Vincent Lauriot-Prévost affirms that if a foil were to break in a collision, it wouldn’t damage the boat’s structure.

The Figaro 3 has a modern, high performance hullshape and sail plan that includes fixed bowsprit for flying furling asymmetric sails. Our February 2017 issue, which comes out in early January, has a full feature about the design of the boat, how the foils work and reaction from some notable shorthanded sailors.

The first prototype will be trialled in summer 2017. A first batch of 50 Figaro 3s will then be produced for the end of 2018. Any Figaro class member can buy a boat and hull numbers will be drawn in lots to keep the one design element strict.

Beneteau is currently finalising the pricing of the boat with the class.

What does a Figaro 3 with foils mean for this popular class? Here is the reaction from some expert shorthanded sailors. “To have a chance to be competitive it is best to come in at this time as everyone is new and learning so there is no advantage,” says Dee Caffari, “whereas now the old timers are so advanced at sailing the Figaro 2 that it really is a tough call to race the circuit. I think this may open the class up again with some fresh and new faces, maybe even mine!”

Pip Hare addressed it another way. “At the moment it is possible for someone with less skill and a lower budget to get into the fleet, learn with others and still take part in the events. Until the second hand boats come through initially the class will become incredibly elite which will be an exciting thing – I wonder whether the differential between the front and the back of the fleet will grow.

“Judging by the reports from the Vendee it is hard work to keep these boats on the pace all of the time – this type of sailing is becoming more and more physically demanding it really is hard core.”

Conrad Humphreys, who has raced in both Class 40s and IMOCA 60s, wonders how much budget may affect the new class. “The question will be if the racing remains as close/tight as its been and of course the budget required to purchase/run a campaign,” “You might well see the bigger teams purchasing two boats and chartering one, which happened with the Figaro 2. Last time around the purchase price was very competitive and those that could buy two boats did very well on the charter income (10+years €30,000/year).

“Assuming strict one design, I think they will be close and the top guys will learn quickly how to use the foil. This is an important transition, as after this Vendee Globe, they’ll be no going back. If anything foils are going to improve further.”

For Figaro and MOD70 sailor Henry Bomby the design change is an exciting one. “The only weakness of the Figaro class for me was that the boat didn’t help you develop skills that you could transfer onto other boats. It’s really exciting to see the class updated with square top mains, foils and asymmetrical downwind and reaching sails. I can’t wait to get out on one!”

The Figaro BENETEAU 3 is the first production foiling one-design monohull ever to be designed. A distillation of technology and innovation, it results from a collaboration between group BENETEAU’s best experts and the Van Peteghem Lauriot-Prévost (VPLP) office, the architects of the two last boats to win the Vendée Globe. The prototype has been tested and the production of the boat has been launched.  It will enter the ISO/World Sailing design category A.

Description

The Beneteau shipyard has been producing the Figaro 3 sailing yacht since 2017. The vessel has international CE (A) certification and can be operated on the high seas. The hull is made of fiberglass, its length is 10.89 meters, width - 3.48 meters, and draft - 2.5 meters. The model is equipped with eight passenger seats.

The yacht was designed by the Beneteau shipyard design bureau and Van Peteghem Lauriot-Prevost. The vessel was designed specifically for sailing racing - it is equipped with movable hydrofoils that reduce drift, as well as increase its speed and maneuverability.

On the cockpit of the vessel there are two sofas for several people, in which spacious lockers for personal belongings are mounted. In its center, control cables are provided, and along the sides - passages to the bow platform and fastenings for the safety of passengers. The floor of the model is provided with anti-slip notches and compartments for water skis. The stern is equipped with a compact water access platform with detachable ladder, metal handrail and tow bar.

Inside the cabin of Beneteau Figaro 3 there is an electronic control panel, several compact chairs and lockers. The mast height of the vessel is 15.22 meters, and the sail area is 180 m². The yacht is equipped with a 75 hp stationary engine, her fuel tank holds 400 liters, and the fresh water tank - 694 liters.

Mais qu'a-t-il bien pu se passer sur le tournage du film It Ends With Us  ?

L'OBSESSION DE CHLOE – En coulisses, les tensions entre le réalisateur Justin Baldoni et l'actrice Blake Lively auraient atteint des sommets. Mais qu'a-t-il pu se produire sur le plateau de ce long-métrage à succès ?

Il faut bien l'admettre : on s'est d'abord prise au jeu. Début août,  Blake Lively  est en effet apparue vêtue d'une robe Versace, portée par  Britney Spears  en 2002, durant l'avant-première new-yorkaise de son film Jamais plus ( It Ends With Us , en anglais), adapté du best-seller de Colleen Hoover. Cet hommage nous a tout bonnement ravie, à l'aube d’une tournée promotionnelle que l'on imaginait pleine de fantaisie. En témoignent les clichés de cette soirée, sur lesquels Blake Lively rit aux éclats en prenant la pose avec son époux  Ryan Reynolds  et leur ami Hugh Jackman.

Certes, les deux acteurs ne figurent pas dans le long-métrage signé Justin Baldoni. Mais les héros de Deadpool & Wolverine ont largement participé à sa promotion. Dans une vidéo publiée sur Instagram, le mardi 6 août, Ryan Reynolds fait ainsi une hilarante crise de jalousie à Brandon Sklenar, le partenaire de tournage de Blake Lively. Et l'on savoure, naïvement, cet esprit de franche camaraderie. D’autant que le long-métrage, sorti le 9 août aux États-Unis, a rencontré un franc succès, engrangeant 50 millions de dollars (45 millions d'euros) au box-office, le week-end de sa sortie.

Deux camps s’affrontent

Depuis, on a pour le moins déchanté. Voilà déjà plusieurs jours que les médias américains évoquent des tensions présumées, qui seraient survenues durant le tournage. Elles auraient opposé Justin Baldoni, réalisateur et interprète de Ryle Kincaid, à l'actrice Blake Lively. Sur les réseaux sociaux, deux camps s’affrontent. D’un côté, ceux qui penchent en faveur de l'héroïne de Gossip Girl , convaincus que le cinéaste a quelque chose à cacher. De l’autre, ceux qui fustigent la comédienne, insinuant qu'elle aurait un tempérament difficile. Et l'on n'a, décidément, pas idée de l'histoire abyssale dans laquelle on vient de chuter.

Dans It Ends With Us , Blake Lively incarne Lily Bloom, une fleuriste éprise du chirurgien Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni). Tous deux entretiennent une relation intense - jusqu’au jour où commence à poindre la violence. La situation est d'autant plus difficile que la jeune femme a jadis vu les coups de son père s’abattre sur sa mère. Un sujet des plus sensible. Sur Twitter, certains internautes s’étonnent donc que Blake Lively n’aborde pas le thème des violences conjugales durant ses interviews, l'accusant de présenter le film comme une simple comédie romantique. Et soulignent que Justin Baldoni a, pour sa part, évoqué publiquement cette problématique. 

«J’ai eu envie de démissionner»

On tombe alors sur un florilège d'extraits, les internautes s’appuyant sur ces séquences pour qualifier la comédienne d'«impolie». Son couple avec Ryan Reynolds est, quant à lui, dépeint comme «hors sol» ou «inaccessible». Dans une vidéo partagée sur  Youtube  par Kjersti Flaa, datée de 2016 et intitulée «L'interview de Blake Lively qui m'a donné envie de démissionner», on voit également l'actrice se fendre de remarques sarcastiques à l’égard de la journaliste norvégienne (une autre interview «difficile à regarder» de l’actrice a depuis  refait surface ).

Deux jours plus tôt, le  Hollywood Reporter  évoquait déjà une supposée «fracture» entre Justin Baldoni et Blake Lively. Tous deux se seraient disputés en coulisses, s’affrontant concernant deux versions potentielles du film. Il n’en fallait pas plus pour que les internautes accusent Blake Lively, coproductrice du long-métrage, d’ingérence. Cette dernière a d’ailleurs confié dans une interview que son époux Ryan Reynolds avait (en partie) écrit la scène du toit, cruciale dans It Ends With Us . 

Don’t Worry Darling

D'autres, affirment que ces innombrables commentaires et vidéos seraient le fruit d'une campagne de dénigrement savamment orchestrée à l'encontre de Blake Lively. Et ce, dans l'optique de masquer une vérité bien plus obscure. L'absence de Justin Baldoni sur les photos du casting, immortalisé le soir de l'avant-première new-yorkaise, a ainsi intrigué les internautes. Le réalisateur se trouvait pourtant, lui aussi, sur le red carpet de l'événement.

Sans compter qu'il n'a assuré aucune promotion aux côtés des membres de cette distribution. Certains commentaires ont également relevé le fait que le cinéaste suivait Blake Lively et Colleen Hoover sur Instagram – mais qu’aucun des acteurs du film ne le suit en retour. Interrogées sur le tournage avec Justin Baldoni, l’interprète de Lily Bloom et sa partenaire de tournage Jenny Slate ont par ailleurs botté en touche durant leurs interviews respectives.

Plus intrigant encore, Liz Frank, qui coanime un podcast avec le cinéaste, n'a pas utilisé ce médium pour faire la promotion du long-métrage. Elle a pourtant publié une vidéo de l’avant-première, dans laquelle on n’entrevoit que Blake Lively et Colleen Hoover, s'adressant au public new-yorkais. On n'avait pas vu un tel scandale depuis la promotion de Don't Worry Darling (on se demande encore, à ce jour, si Harry Styles a bel et bien craché sur Chris Pine lors du Festival de Venise). 

Une vérité «bien plus sombre»

Et l’on n’est pas au bout de nos surprises. On apprend que, face à cette polémique, Justin Baldoni a engagé Melissa Nathan, communicante spécialisée en gestion de crise, autrefois au service… de Johnny Depp (période procès contre Amber Heard). On finit par se demander si les rumeurs ne seraient pas un brin en dessous de la vérité. Une théorie confirmée par la TikTokeuse Jenna Redfield, elle-même prisonnière de cet engrenage.

Cette dernière a publié de multiples vidéos concernant l'affaire. Mais dans l'un de ses derniers posts, la jeune femme paraît saisir l'ampleur de l'histoire. On l'y voit expliquer, la voix étranglée, combien tout cela est plus «complexe» qu'il n’y paraît. Elle déclare avoir reçu un message long et détaillé, découvrant par ce biais une vérité «profonde et sombre». La jeune femme n'en dira pas plus, pour ne pas s'exposer à des poursuites judiciaires. Elle révèle avoir confié les messages à un média, afin qu'il mène l'enquête, mais se montre convaincue que ces informations sortiront dans la presse. 

Une atmosphère «inconfortable»

On a soudain l'impression d'avoir ouvert la boîte de Pandore. En quête de détails, on tombe, effarée, sur une vidéo dévoilée par TMZ, dans laquelle le Justin Baldoni et Blake Lively semblent avoir un échange tendu à l'extérieur d'un café. Depuis, un membre de l'équipe a assuré au magazine que le duo était simplement en train de discuter. Mais voilà : selon des sources anonymes, le réalisateur aurait véritablement créé une atmosphère «inconfortable» sur le plateau.

D'après certains témoins, qui se sont confiés à TMZ , Blake Lively se serait notamment sentie «mal à l'aise» durant une scène de baiser avec ce dernier, qui l'aurait fait «traîner» plus longtemps que nécessaire. Elle se serait également sentie gênée lorsque l'acteur, souffrant de problèmes de dos, aurait demandé à son entraîneur combien pesait sa partenaire. Ils s'apprêtaient alors à tourner une scène où il la soulevait dans les airs. Une question qui n'aurait pas été du goût de la principale intéressée, tout juste mère d'un quatrième enfant.

Dans le  Daily Mail , certains membres de l'équipe reprochent en outre au cinéaste de ne pas avoir tenu compte de la perspective du personnage de Blake Lively durant les scènes de violences. Il se serait ainsi focalisé sur le «point de vue masculin abusif» de son propre rôle, Ryle Kincaid. À tel point que Justin Baldoni serait presque «devenu» son personnage. En plateau, certaines femmes auraient estimé qu'il était «à la limite d’avoir un comportement abusif envers elles». L’ambiance se serait dégradée à mesure que Blake Lively ou Colleen Hoover auraient cherché à réécrire certaines scènes. 

Des «frictions»

Et Justin Baldoni dans tout ça ? Il semble, pour sa part, survoler l’affaire. S’il s’est effacé lors de l'avant-première, c’était selon lui pour mettre en lumière les femmes qui ont travaillé sur le film. Dans ses interviews, le cinéaste ne tarit pas non plus d'éloges sur Blake Lively, saluant sa «force créative» et assurant qu'elle est prête à passer derrière la caméra pour réaliser la suite du long-métrage. Quant aux rumeurs de conflit, il s'empresse de les balayer d'un revers de la main dans un entretien accordé à  Elle UK . «Il y a toujours des frictions quand on fait un film comme celui-ci, estime-t-il. Mais en définitive, ce sont ces frictions qui, je crois, créent l'art et le beau.» De quoi entretenir le flou autour de cette affaire, dont on se fait la promesse de scruter les moindres rebondissements .

Washington D.C., Aug. 14, 2024 —

The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced that it obtained a preliminary injunction, asset freeze, and other emergency relief against Atlanta-based Drive Planning LLC and its founder and CEO, Russell Todd Burkhalter, to halt a $300 million real estate Ponzi scheme impacting more than 2,000 investors. Additionally, a receiver was appointed over Drive Planning. The SEC alleges the defendants misappropriated millions of dollars of investor funds to fund Burkhalter’s lavish lifestyle and to make Ponzi-like payments.

“Drive Planning and Burkhalter gained the trust of everyday people and encouraged them to invest in this scheme by promising exorbitant returns, but as our complaint alleges, the defendants’ business was nothing more than a classic Ponzi scheme, using new investor money to pay returns to existing investors, with Burkhalter stealing millions to fund a lavish lifestyle,” said Nekia Hackworth Jones, Director of the SEC’s Atlanta Regional Office. “Investors should be vigilant when they encounter aggressive sellers who make over-the-top sales pitches and promise high rates of guaranteed returns.”

The SEC’s complaint alleges that, from 2020 through at least June 2024, Drive Planning and Burkhalter raised more than $300 million for purported real estate investments, telling investors their money would be used to fund land development projects. The defendants promised 10% interest every 3 months and encouraged investors to tap their savings, retirement accounts, and even open lines of credit to invest. In reality, the defendants did not have a business capable of generating the promised returns, and they instead used investor funds to make Ponzi-like payments, according to the complaint. The complaint further alleges that Burkhalter stole investor funds to fund his luxurious lifestyle, including to buy a $3.1 million yacht and spending $4.6 million on chartering private jets and luxury car services and $2 million on a luxury condo. 

The SEC’s complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, charges Drive Planning and Burkhalter with violating the antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws. In addition to the emergency relief granted by the Court, which the defendants did not oppose, the SEC seeks permanent injunctions, disgorgement of ill-gotten gains with prejudgment interest, and civil penalties against the defendants, and an officer-and-director bar against Burkhalter. The complaint also names Jacqueline Burkhalter, Burkhalter’s spouse, and several related entities as relief defendants and seeks disgorgement of ill-gotten gains from them.  

The SEC’s ongoing investigation is being conducted by Austin Stephenson and Cody Turley, under the supervision of Peter Diskin and Justin Jeffries, of the SEC’s Atlanta Regional Office. The SEC’s litigation will be led by Pat Huddleston and H.B. Roback, under the supervision of M. Graham Loomis.

Ukrainian team blew up Nord Stream pipeline, claims report

The Nord Stream gas pipeline was blown up by a small Ukrainian sabotage team in an operation that was initially approved by Volodymyr Zelenskiy and then called off, but which went ahead anyway, according to claims in a report in the Wall Street Journal.

A spokesperson for the Ukrainian president has denied the claims.

The pipeline, consisting of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, carried natural gas from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea. It was damaged by explosions in September 2022, seven months after Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, putting it out of action and worsening an energy crisis in Europe.

Initially, many assumed Russia was to blame. Later, others suggested the CIA could have been involved. Last year, the New York Times reported that US officials had seen intelligence suggesting a “pro-Ukrainian group” was behind the explosions, while last month, Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán, called the explosions “an act of terrorism carried out at the obvious direction of the Americans”.

According to the WSJ, the sabotage operation involved a small sailing boat and a team of six people, a combination of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians with relevant expertise. The operation used private funding but was directed by a serving army general, who reported to Ukraine’s then commander in chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi. Zelenskiy approved the plan, but later backtracked after the CIA found out about it and asked Kyiv to call it off, according to the WSJ’s sources.

Nonetheless, Zaluzhnyi pressed ahead with the mission, the report claims.

Zaluzhnyi, now Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK, told the WSJ he knew nothing about the operation and called the allegations a “mere provocation”.

Ukraine has always denied involvement in the explosion and on Thursday a spokesperson for Zelenskiy again accused Russia of carrying out the sabotage. “Such an act can only be carried out with extensive technical and financial resources … and who possessed all this at the time of the bombing? Only Russia,” Mykhailo Podolyak told Reuters.

Other Ukrainian agencies also denied governmental involvement. A senior official from the SBU, Ukraine’s security service, told the WSJ that Zelenskiy “did not approve the implementation of any such actions on the territory of third countries and did not issue relevant orders”.

However, German police and prosecutors are reportedly pressing on with an investigation that is now homing in on senior Ukrainian military officials and could prove embarrassing for Berlin, given that it involves an ally launching an act of sabotage against key infrastructure.

On Wednesday it emerged that German authorities had issued a European arrest warrant for a man identified as “Volodymyr Z”, a diving instructor who lived in Poland and is alleged to have dived down to the seabed to place the devices on the pipeline.

Polish prosecutors confirmed they had received a European arrest warrant for a man suspected of involvement in the Nord Stream attack. “Ultimately, Volodymyr Z was not detained, as he left the territory of Poland at the beginning of July this year, crossing the Polish-Ukrainian border,” prosecutors said in a statement.

Roderich Kiesewetter, a member of the opposition CDU who serves on the foreign affairs committee of the German parliament, urged caution about the allegations raised in the WSJ report. He told German radio there were “intensive interests” in “letting all the clues lead back to Ukraine”, warning that this could be “part of the disinformation”.

He said there continued to be an “extensive amount of murkiness” surrounding the case, and that it could not be ruled out that this was a “false flag” operation – an attempt to push the blame on to Ukraine. He added that the pipelines had only been destroyed “once it was … clear that gas would never flow through them again”.
