Holterman launches first 23.6m X-treme 78 Sport yacht

Dutch boatbuilder Holterman has launched the first unit in its 23.6 metre X-treme 78 Sport series at its Meppel facility in The Netherlands.

The model is the latest in the yard’s X-treme range and follows in the footsteps of its larger sibling, the 32.65 metre X-105 , the first hull of which was launched earlier this year and christened Lady Fleur . 

Described as “innovative and sporty”, the X-treme 78 Sport features a “study” exterior designed by Bernd Weel Design in collaboration with Holterman Shipyard. Key exterior details include an aluminium hull and large windows.

The “stylish and luxurious interior” interior meanwhile is designed by Kitty van der Kamp Design. Accommodation is for eight guests including the owner’s suite and three additional ensuite guest cabins.

The aft deck features a large seating area, which leads through to the saloon and kitchen via sliding doors. Stairs lead down to the lower level, with the wheelhouse sitting on a raised floor above the aft deck.

Power comes from twin Volvo-Penta D13 IPS-1350 engines for a top speed of 28 knots.

Forged from lightweight aluminum, Miramar features a deep-V, double-chine planing hull and twin Volvo-Penta IPS engines that together allow her to reach more than 30 knots at full tilt. For comparison’s sake, Lady Fleur ’s top speed is 15 knots. Miramar is also highly maneuverable and exceptionally quiet in operation, according to the yard.

The yacht’s wide, 20-foot beam gave Kitty van der Kamp Design plenty of interior space to play with. The decor combines rich wood elements handcrafted by Holterman carpenters with modern furnishings, elegant light fixtures and expansive windows. The living quarters feel dark and moody yet still light and airy.

The open-plan layout centers around the main deck as it’s home to a giant salon, a dining room and a galley. A staircase will lead you down to the owner’s suite, three guest doubles and a separate day head, while sliding doors will take you to the aft deck seating area. Elsewhere outdoors, the foredeck is fitted with a comfy U-shaped sofa and a large sunbed, the bow sports another alfresco lounging spot and the hydraulic swim platform is equipped with a tender.

“Based on a proven platform, all kinds of wishes are up for discussion, from the exterior design to the interior and the choice of engines,” Timmerman said in a statement . “A hybrid option is on the table too, and we love to innovate with clients by involving them in every step of the process.”

Sounds like clients can push X-treme yachts to, well, the extreme.

With over 50 years of experience in building seaworthy steel and aluminum yachts up to 120 feet in length, the Dutch shipyard Holterman today creates boats unique in its segment. The shipyard’s model range is not very diverse, but all models currently available will easily provide you with everything that you would like to get from a motor yacht.

We will not even mention the excellent quality of the boats, because they are built in the Netherlands, so there is nothing to complain about, everything is perfect. But there is also great news for reliability lovers: Holterman builds the hulls of his yachts from either aluminum or steel.

Holterman Commander

If you, like us, appreciate the traditional beauty and elegance of classic boats, then you have come to the right place. The design of these boats was completely developed by the Trimm team.

These beautiful 16m steel yachts are true Dutch cruisers for inland water travel enthusiasts. At the same time, their high seaworthiness will easily allow you to make a coastal cruise in any weather.

Holterman X-treme

Today’s flagship is the 32.65m X-Treme 105 Lady Fleur, a pocket explorer style aluminum yacht designed by Bernd Weel and Diana Yacht Design. In fact, there are no analogues to these boats today.

These boats are amazing not only for their performance, but also for being true exploration yachts with extended range and increased reliability, which is facilitated by the duplication of all major systems. The aluminum body and high fault tolerance make them ideal for high latitudes.

The main idea of ​​the designers was to collect a wide range of functions in a relatively small yacht. One of the most notable exterior features of the yacht is the aft deck which, thanks to the tender’s wet launch system, can carry a 10m RIB. The same launch system can be transformed into a 5m depth-adjustable pool.

And yes, these yachts are beautiful. The Scandinavian-type cabin with reverse slope of the glazing is especially attractive. Other design elements in the trawler style are also striking. The superb interior was designed by Trimm studio.

Holterman pays great attention to the impact on the environment, so the teak was replaced with a high-tech counterpart. The amount of exhaust is reduced as much as possible due to the design of the hull and the fact that range is preferable to speed.

Two 750 hp engines capable of reaching a maximum speed of 15 knots, however, to achieve a cruising speed of 9 knots, only 15% of the installed power is required. This provides a range of 2,400 nautical miles, more than many trawlers. The lithium battery pack will also allow the yacht to spend the night without shore power or a generator.

Holterman 60 Governor

An elegant cruising boat similar to the Commander series, but 18.38 meters long.

Holterman Classic Hybrid

Like the Governor, it only comes in one size: 21.6 meters. This classic steel hulled gentleman’s yacht is a design gem from Trimm. Exclusive luxurious design is not everything. The boat is fully electric, but is equipped with a backup generator that can turn on in case of complete discharge of the batteries.

Holterman Shipyard has added a flybridge model to the award-winning Xtreme series, with details of the in-build project released for the first time

Holterman Shipyard has announced the addition of an entertainer’s delight to its award-winning Xtreme series. Details have been released for the first time on the in-build Xtreme 78 Flybridge, which adds a focus on warm-weather cruising to the successful range, and is due for delivery in early 2024. It’s an evolution of Holterman Shipyard’s Xtreme series as the best of its Xtreme 78 Sport model has been used as the basis for the Xtreme 78 Flybridge, in-build at the shipyard’s Meppel facilities.

The sleek Xtreme 78 Sport was designed for cruising Dutch canals and northern waters, with a sophisticated low profile, sporty design and voluminous hull. Designer Bernd Weel has taken that generous hull and striking profile and added a flybridge, with a focus on outdoor living for long hot summers al fresco. It’s a continuation of Xtreme yachts’ ultra-successful entry into the market which began in just 2022. The Xtreme yachts series launched with the Xtreme 105 Lady Fleur which scooped up awards for her ground-breaking technical features. Today’s release of the Xtreme 78 Flybridge marks the fifth order in the series in the year since Lady Fleur’s launch.

Holterman Shipyard’s sales and operational manager, Julian van Santen attributes this extraordinary achievement to the series’ signature of delivering the experience and luxury amenities previously only found on much larger yachts while remaining compact and agile in movement and ability to berth and anchor with little limitation.

“Building on the success of the Xtreme 105, this philosophy has been seamlessly carried over to our subsequent models, including the Xtreme 54, 60, 78 Sport, and now the Xtreme 78 Flybridge. Each of these smaller models has been meticulously designed and built to ensure they satisfy all the needs and desires of a superyacht experience in a more manageable size.”

Designed for the sun

At 23.9 metres LOA, this yacht will slip under French Riviera anchoring restrictions and her inviting flybridge is a match for that. It’s built for warm weather living with a helm station, wet bar, al fresco dining and multiple sunpad areas. “The area has been designed for lounging, and has a lot of features to enjoy time gathered with family and friends; including sunbathing, having dinner or drinks alongside the bar, and controlling the yacht from the fully-equipped and well-designed helm station,” says her designer, Bernd Weel. “One of the features I really love are the chaises longues

flanking the helm station. These are perfect for lounging when your partner is controlling the yacht during a cruise and give a very social connection. The captain doesn’t have to be alone, and still enjoys a free and unobstructed view forward,” says Weel.

Adding to the overarching sense of openness, the Xtreme 78 Flybridge boasts an electrically-operated sliding roof on the flybridge, elevating the onboard experience, and allowing guests to enjoy the bar under the warm rays of the sun.

The Xtreme 78 Flybridge has retained the sporty character and dynamic look of the Xtreme 78 Sport, with a layout, spacious flybridge and Mediterranean-orientated design and functionality which moves the focus to outdoor living.

An owner, shipyard, designer collaboration

The Xtreme series’ rapid success is attributable in part to its ability to meet owner expectations. Lady Fleur won awards for the build and design team’s feat of combining the owner’s wishes for a yacht of 33 metres, which also encompassed an aft drive-in tender bay rising flush to the deck to form an 11 metre pool.

The Xtreme 78 Flybridge continues in this vein. As the build progressed, it emerged the owner enjoys a place to take in peaceful contemplation of the ocean. With this in mind, the team set about adding an individualised spot to suit the moments the owner likes to appreciate on the water.

“We added seating on the stern; a solid bench on the hatch directly located at the swim platform where the owner enjoys sitting, and being very close to the water. Another feature they really liked is the bar on the fly deck. It is covered by a hardtop with a sliding canvas roof and is the perfect place to enjoy a drink with friends,” says Weel.

Technical pedigree

At 23.9 metres, and with a beam of 6.18 metres, the Xtreme 78 Flybridge has the series’ signature immense interior volume with a full beam master amidships, two twin VIPs and guest cabin forward. With the first yacht in the Xtreme series changing what we expect from superyachts in this size range, the 78 Flybridge is continuing with that technical pedigree.

The Xtreme 78 Flybridge is equipped with an array of advanced technical features including an hydraulically-operated aluminium platform at the stern, capable of lifting a tender of up to 1000kg, watermaker, Humphree All Speed stabilising system, retractable capstans on the foredeck, a telescopic anchor system at the bow, Volvo-Penta dynamic positioning, and Garmin Surround View for comprehensive situational awareness, all bringing large yacht safety to this go-anywhere sized vessel.

“To ensure safety, the yacht is equipped with a thermal FLIR camera in the engine room to monitor systems, while an expanded FLIR thermal imaging camera on the mast adds additional safety for man overboard procedures or identifying hazards during a night watch. Additional amenities include a 22.5 Kw generator, an electric shore power reel, air conditioning, and floor heating throughout the vessel, ensuring comfort in all climates,”  says Van Santen. “The Xtreme 78 Flybridge truly embodies a blend of cutting-edge technology, luxury, and innovation, providing an exceptional yachting experience for those who appreciate the finest details.”

The sleek hull lines contain an exceptionally well-spaced yacht. Engine rooms are well-organised and accessible, and the generous flybridge comfortably accommodates up to 12 people for relaxation. Underwater lighting around the vessel adds to the captivating ambiance from on-deck spaces for guests, and powerful engines propel the vessel to exhilarating speeds of 26+ knots.

Design signature

With the Xtreme 78 Sport delivered in 2022, progress on the Xtreme 78 Flybridge continues apace with the design footprint already in place and proven.

“In collaboration with Bernd Weel, we developed the Xtreme 78 Sport with the foresight to easily transform it into a flybridge variant if desired by future buyers,” says Van Santen. “The X78Fly shares the same structure up to the top of the glazing in the superstructure, and only the construction above the glazing is modified to accommodate the flybridge.”

There’s one additional design feature Weel is particularly excited to see come to life onboard the Xtreme 78 Flybridge. Adding to the presence of the yacht, a pair of wings fold from the fly deck, arching out over the walk-around main deck to port and starboard and emphasising the yacht’s beam.

“We added these because of the taller flybridge superstructure. It was needed to regain some balance and to give a stronger appearance. They are mounted in a hanging way from the superstructure, therefore ‘floating’ on the bulwark,” says Weel.

Like other of the Xtreme series’ features, it’s not one yacht observers are likely to have seen before, while in the interior each yacht is moulded to owner preference. The Xtreme yachts team challenges itself to achieve an exceptional artisanal interior while incorporating modern technologies.

“We are determined to accelerate our production process without compromising the traditional craftsmanship that defines our interiors. This approach allows us to maintain the authentic and artisanal feel of our interiors while increasing efficiency and precision during manufacturing. The Xtreme series has a number of signatures which are behind its rapid growth in popularity. These include voluminous hulls, which allow space for maximum system redundancy, with innovative equipment and technology, interiors designed for comfort and enhancing the areas most used by owners.

the Dutch shipyard Shipyard Holterman start to build ships half a century ago. The shipyard was laid by John. Holtermann (J. Holterman) and De Vries (De Vries) 1967 Wanneperveen .

During the economic crisis in the Netherlands the early 80-ies, when a bankrupt shipbuilding company of the country, Holterman is not only closed, but on the contrary, began to develop. For all time of its existence, the shipyard has built more than 500 vessels.

"We have never given a lot of publicity — say, Holterman not without pride. — We spent the money on boats that were built".

In 1991 the management of the company passed into the hands of Robbert Holtermans , son of the founder Holterman. Since then, the company has embarked on the construction of luxury yachts to order. In 2012 the yacht Holterman 60 Governor won the award "European boat of the year".

Shipyard Holterman involved in major projects in cooperation with other companies. For example, together with the Dutch Premium Yachts the shipyard has built 18 tour boats for a big client in China .

Manufacturing

Although initially, Halterman started production in Wanneperveen, for many decades the court Holterman built on their own sites in Meppel , Netherlands. The shipyard sharpened by a full cycle of operations.

Holterman Shipyard builds >displacement yacht >expedition yachts and trawlers, as well as >a motor yacht with a steel hull. Modern models have a length of from 15 to 20 meters, the design of which can vary under customer's requests.

Holterman Shipyard offers yachts not to order, and ready to, according to the company, the buyer is not waiting 1.5 years. The selected yacht can be modified on customer request and with additional equipment.

X-Treme 105 // Lady Fleur // Holterman Shipyard

The x-treme x-105 by holterman shipyard, christened lady fleur, features the new stabilizer system waveless by cmc marine - moreover, the argo and directa 120 systems..

The fresh and masculine exterior comes from Bernd Weel Design, while Diana Yacht Design did the calculations, and Trimm Design drew the interior design. Alongside the eye-catching exterior design, another great feature is the tender launching system aft that welcomes an 11m RIB on a 32m yacht. Moreover, there is an integrated 5m pool. Another place for water toys, jet skis, and a 3.45m boat is amidships. The tender launching system is also a pool.

With its twin Volvo D16MH engines (551 kW each), the X-105 can reach a top speed of 15 knots and has a range of 2,400 nautical miles at its cruising speed of 10 knots.

“The owners have lots of experience with fast boats and wanted to switch to an extremely comfortable and relaxed yacht that would be ideal for three generations of their family,” Holterman explains. “Their philosophy revolved around three key issues: enhanced safety (hence the high bulwarks), hassle-free enjoyment of time spent onboard (hence the emphasis on redundancy throughout) and a radical design that would make the most of the spaces they actually use. The latter demand and its implications for the aft section of the boat led us on a journey that has basically ripped up the rule book for boats this size.”

Monohull or Catamaran?

“The fore and amidships section of Lady Fleur is a conventional monohull yacht with accommodations, lounge, and crew cabins, ending aft with a full-beam garage for the two jet-skis and other toys that are launched by side hatches. The aft section is built in a catamaran style with two mini-hulls welded to the aft bulkhead for the engines plus two other technical compartments, one containing two watermakers and air conditioning units, the other housing almost all the electrical equipment.

The two engine rooms are separated by a construction that lowers down and can be submerged 2.5 meters to create a draught of one meter below water. This allows the tender to be easily wet-launched or retrieved, with complete comfort for those alighting or disembarking. Within that platform we have created a movable floor which picks up seawater to create a five-metre long pool that ranges from 30 to 150 cm in depth. This is a totally custom-developed system by a team of experts from across the design and engineering spectrum.”

The X-105 has four electric fin stabilizers by Waveless that belongs to CMC Marine. The company engineered this system for yachts from 12 to 40 meters. Furthermore, they also deliver the electric steering system Directa 120 and the control system ARGO.

Four guest cabins are placed on the lower deck, together with the crew area. The owner suite is on the main deck.

Dutch shipyard Holterman is adding a new 60-footer (20m) to its Xtreme range of flexible, multipurpose motoryachts. Building work is already well under way on the first Xtreme60, which will sit comfortably between the existing Xtreme-54 and Xtreme-78 models, with their muscular lines, trawler windows and sleek profile.

Holterman Shipyard, a Dutch company with over four decades of experience in yacht building , is preparing to launch its latest model in early 2024: the Xtreme60. The new addition to the Xtreme range is a flexible and multipurpose motoryacht, measuring 20 meters in length, and boasts a design that is a continuation of the muscular lines, trawler windows, and sleek profile of the existing Xtreme-54 and Xtreme-78 models.

Bernd Weel designed the Xtreme60 with complex shapes and numerous hull openings, bringing in natural light throughout the yacht’s interiors. The hull construction is complete, and the focus is now on the superstructure. Once the two sections are joined, the boat will move to Holterman’s state-of-the-art shipyard in Meppel for fit-out.

The Xtreme60 offers plenty of exterior space, with a long aft deck designed for lounging in both shade and sun, and enough room for entertaining. Wide side decks tucked behind deep, safe bulwarks run forward to a stylish foredeck lounge, featuring a drinks table, two banks of seating in matt white Sunbrella fabric, and a large forward-facing sunpad. The yacht also boasts a flexible beach club, which includes a deep, padded seat when the transom is closed, and a hydraulically operated panel that opens to reveal a deep lazarette for storing water toys, diving gear, bikes, or other equipment.

The yacht’s interiors are entirely given over to luxurious accommodation designed by Kitty van der Kamp, with a high-end galley, cosy indoor dining, and comfortable sofas. The lower deck is configured as a huge full-beam master cabin with a desk and a vanity table, while a TV lounge lies further forward, lit with large hull windows and a skylight overhead. A well-appointed guest double is in the bow, with access to a second bathroom that doubles as a day head. The yacht uses natural shades and materials to create a sophisticated, contemporary feel.

The Xtreme60 will be powered by two efficient Volvo Penta D6-300hp engines, capable of achieving an 8-knot cruising speed or 11 knots full throttle, combined with 5,000 litres of fuel tankage, providing an adventurous range of around 1,100 nautical miles. The yacht also features an advanced DMS stabilisation system that ensures comfort at sea and anchor.

Holterman Shipyard has been building custom yachts since 1979 and has garnered a reputation for delivering high-quality, innovative, and seaworthy yachts. Each yacht built by the shipyard is unique, and the company takes the time to understand the needs and desires of each client. The new Xtreme60 is a continuation of this tradition, and the shipyard is excited to welcome it to its range of custom-built yachts.

Moscow's High Rise Bohemia: The International Business District With No Business

The Moscow International Business Center (Also known as Moskva-City ) was meant to be Russia ’s ticket into the Western world. First conceived in 1992, the district at the edge of Moscow’s city center is intended to contain up to 300,000 inhabitants, employees and visitors at any given moment and, when completed, will house over 4 million square meters of prime retail, hotel and office space to create what the Russian government desired most from this project: an enormous financial district that could dwarf London’s Canary Wharf and challenge Manhattan . Twenty three years later though, Moscow-based real estate company Blackwood estimates that as much as 45% of this new space is entirely vacant and rents have plummeted far below the average for the rest of Moscow. The only press Moskva-City is attracting is for tenants like the High Level Hostel , a hostel catering to backpackers and other asset-poor tourists on the 43rd floor of the Imperia Tower , with prices starting at $25.50 for a bed in a six-person room. This is not the glittering world of western high finance that was envisioned back in the post-Soviet 90s; but what has it become instead?

As one might expect from a project of this sheer ambition, Moskva-City has a troubled past. The economic crash in 2008 hit Russia hard enough to evict the previous Mayor of Moscow , Yuri Luzhkov, who had been a cheerleader for the district, and replace him with the considerably more austere Sergei Sobyanin, who famously declared that the whole idea was an “urban planning mistake.” But as recently as 2013, the Wall Street Journal was triumphantly claiming that Moskva-City had risen from the dead, citing 80% occupancy rates and glowing quotes from industry insiders claiming that Moskva-City was the "place to be." Driven by record highs in oil prices, Moscow looked poised to become the next Dubai .

Instead, Moscow is now in the grip of an economic winter prompted by western sanctions and drops in the price of oil. The large financial groupings that Moskva-City was meant to shelter have been warned off by their inability to issue credit to international markets, for example - but Moskva-City isn’t just an Empire State Building left empty by the Great Depression.

A fundamental problem that is holding Moskva back compared to the rest of Moscow is the simple fact that currently, getting to Moskva-City is nigh-on impossible at peak hours. Moscow has long been plagued with transport problems, ever since the government failed to match the dramatic expansion of the city with a dramatic expansion of the transport system after the Second World War. Despite being only 2.5 miles from the Kremlin , Moskva-City is only just inside the ring road that bounds the city center and which acts as the only real transport link to it (and as a result, is clogged by construction vehicles.) A railway and metro hub has been finished, but so far only runs a one-stop shuttle service to the closest Metro station that is actually integrated with the rest of Moscow Metro. The isolation of the outer districts is a large, negative part of the Moscow psyche, and it’s not surprising that this is driving away the globetrotting financial elite this project was meant to attract.

The project is managed by architectural practice No.6, which is a constituent part of the large Moscow based practice Mosproject-2 , which is itself a public corporation headed up by Mikhail Vasilyevich Posokhin, who is apparently the “People’s Architect of Russia.” Despite all this state involvement, the project has still managed to become bogged down in bureaucratic infighting - each lot is managed and developed individually, which has led to developers competing for occupants by slashing rates.

Much has been written about the way modern financial districts and towers that inhabit them can be unwelcoming, forbidding or even hostile by design, but the skyscrapers of Moskva-City seem even less friendly than usual. The site - a former stone quarry, chosen out of necessity as the only place in the city center where a new district could be plausibly constructed - is isolated both physically and visually, leaving the cluster a stark anomaly on the city skyline. Even the names seem more imposing than optimistic now: Imperia, City of Capitals , Steel Peak.

The Mercury City Tower , so far the tallest completed building on the site, is officially “a strong reference to Russian constructivism, [which] gives the tower a strong vertical thrust similar to the one found in New York's Chrysler building .” It would be easy to criticize the Mercury City Tower for picking ‘inspirations’ that are so totally opposed to each other - The Chrysler building the defining emblem of American pre-crash confidence and Constructivism created with the express purpose (especially architecturally) of extending the Bolshevik revolution into a social revolution - but the way they smash those two inspirations together is almost beautifully ironic.

Even though the High Level Hostel is less an asset to a financial district than it is a PR problem, it’s been a huge success since opening in September, already ranked 27th out of 766 hostels in Moscow by TripAdvisor. According to the management agency for Moskva-City , 58% of the new occupant signings this year have been non-financial, including a number of small to medium size businesses. Other areas of office space have been occupied by a restaurant and a culinary school, while another space has been redeveloped into a 6,000 seat theater.

While Moskva-City is failing to be a financial district that could take on the world, it’s inadvertently becoming a humanized space catering to the very groups that the Russian economic miracle left behind. Taking advantage of rents lower than the rest of Moscow , the world class facilities and the sheer desperation of the developers, the humanization of Moskva-City could well create the world’s first high-rise bohemia.

Of course, these are not spaces designed for a community, or even for people: these are spaces designed for money, and there’s little scope for changing something that seems so baked into the design of Moskva-City . The High Level Hostel is trading off of the irony of being a hostel in a banking tower, but it’s perfectly possible that at some point people will no longer find this joke funny (especially in a building that seems hostile to the very idea of humor). The isolation of Moskva, even though it allowed this community to spring up in the first place, is just as detrimental to a humanized district as it is to a financial one: even bohemians need to move around the city, or the district risks becoming a black-spot instead of a hot-spot.

Moskva-City’s isolation won’t last forever. The end of construction will open the roads up to traffic, and plans to properly integrate the spur lines of the Metro in this area into the wider system are well under way. The integration of the district will inevitably push up rents, and the Russian economy will eventually boom once again. When that happens, Moskva-City is prime territory to be reconquered by the giants of international finance, and it seems unlikely that the municipal or national governments would want to step in to protect this accidental district. For now, though, the towers capture perfectly this moment of Russia ’s schizophrenic understanding of its place in the world.
