Veneers have become increasingly popular in the hip hop community within the past few years. The installation of these custom teeth covers help to conceal chips and stains. It is now a very standard cosmetic procedure, especially for entertainers. Rappers are now swapping their grills and diamond teeth for some fresh pearly whites. Recently, Cardi B lost one of her veneers after biting into a bagel, proudly showing off the gap in her teeth on social media. In a video post, she smiled for the camera, laughing off her missing tooth. Cardi B is hardly the first rapper to get veneers or lose a tooth but she is one of the latest hip hop artists to have work done on their smile. Today, we are looking at seven rappers with veneers who have been open about getting them. Take a look at the list below.

Back in 2020, Joe Budden got a set of veneers. When revealing his new smile, the rapper-turned-podcaster was met with comedic reactions from fans and his co-hosts. In an episode of The Joe Budden Podcast , he read off hilarious dental themed nicknames created for him by fans, including the episode’s title, “Chief Teeth.” In that same podcast, Budden attributed the sensitivity of his fresh set of veneers to bleaching, making him less talkative than normal. During the prior podcast episode, titled “Podparazzi,” Joe Budden dramatically laughed to flash his veneers as well as some botox. Since then, he has continued to show off his new and improved smile on The Joe Budden Podcast.

Joe Budden was not the only rapper to get veneers in 2020. Rick Ross debuted a new set of teeth after traveling to Colombia for dental work. According to a TMZ report, Ross visited Colombia to see Dr. Mario Montoya, who installed his veneers during a six hour-long procedure. TMZ also claimed that Ross’s new smile was free of charge, despite usually costing around $10,000. On what prompted his decisions to get veneers, the rapper said, “Billion-dollar smiles. I’ma keep it real, I’ve been smoking over 25 years so that was that smokers beige.” In true Rick Ross fashion, he added, “I told him I wanted my shit yayo white, ya dig.”

Last year, Lil Pump got some new teeth for himself. The Florida rapper’s porcelain veneers reportedly cost him $25,000, and will last him 30 years. He had the procedure done in his hometown of Miami, Florida, courtesy of 5 Star Smiles. Along with his veneers, Lil Pump also reportedly ordered a new set of grills as well. The rapper’s cosmetic transformation coincided with his weight loss journey , as he has been tracking his gym progress with photos that see him leaner than ever.

Back in 2016, Gucci Mane emerged from prison a new man, donning a new physique. Since then, he has continued to transform his appearance with a newfound passion for fitness. Along with his workout regimen , Gucci has also changed his smile with glaring white teeth. His bright smile followed his release from prison and has since become a part of his signature look. In 2020, Gucci Mane upgraded his veneers , still pearly white but with a singular diamond on each tooth beside his front two. “A quarter milly in GuWop grille,” he boasted in an Instagram reveal of his dental work.

Cam’ron had work done on his signature gapped teeth in 2022. The Dipset rapper flexed his brand new veneers in an Instagram video while smoking a blunt to Billy Joel. Fans instantly noticed Cam’s new set of teeth, reacting to them on social media. One fan jokingly wrote, “Now who Daddy's teeth Cam’ron done stole… they done Gucci Maned my boy." People also compared Cam’ron’s dental work to fellow Dipset member Juelz Santana ’s missing teeth. Fans can see Cam’ron and his veneers on his sports talk show with Mase, It Is What It Is .

Early in his career, Lil Yachty boasted his diamond-encrusted teeth, including his $35,000 rainbow grills. He later ditched his dental jewelry in favor of some new veneers. In 2021, Yachty hopped on Instagram Live to show off his bright white teeth. “It's the white teeth show, man. N***a's lookin' and feelin' excellent," he said. Impressed by his own look, he exclaimed, "Imma smile for the rest of the week. For the rest of the month!" Lil Yachty also revealed that he spent $80,000 on his custom veneers.

G Herbo is one of the latest rappers to get a brand new set of veneers . In December of last year, he paid a visit to Chicago-based dentist Da Smile Boss for his procedure. The dentist gave his Instagram followers advice in a post about his session with G Herbo. He wrote, “you didn’t damage your teeth in a day. Therefore you can’t fix your entire dental problem in a day!” Da Smile Boss continued, “Technology has changed, but the foundation is still depending on YOUR dental upkeep and you prioritizing your dental health.” While giving G Herbo a new and improved smile, he emphasized the importance of maintaining one’s dental health.

Move over, Hollywood bling, because rapper Lil Yachty has taken dental aesthetics to a whole new level. The star artist recently debuted his brand-new set of custom veneers, which come with an eye-watering price tag of $1,050,000. Dr. Thomas Connelly, a renowned Beverly Hills dentist with a client list that includes the likes of Post Malone, Shaq, and Odell Beckham, is the mastermind behind this dazzling dental work.

Key Takeaway

Lil Yachty has embraced an extravagant dental trend by investing in a pair of custom veneers worth a staggering

million. Dr. Thomas Connelly, a well-known dentist to the stars, created this highly-sought-after dental artwork.

These custom veneers are not your ordinary dental enhancement. They feature a jaw-dropping 16 carats of diamonds, complete with four expertly-cut stones. The dazzling combination of artistry and luxury make Lil Yachty’s smile truly one-of-a-kind.

While Lil Yachty’s year has already been filled with success, including a feature on Drake’s latest album and receiving high praise from Donald Glover for his collaboration with J. Cole, his million-dollar smile is stealing the show. Not only does it make a bold fashion statement, but it is also making waves in the dental world.

With the rise of celebrities showcasing their expensive dental upgrades, it’s no surprise that fans and dental enthusiasts alike are embracing this new trend. Lil Yachty’s custom veneers have captured the attention of the public and are likely to inspire dental transformations around the world.

However, maintaining such a pricey porcelain masterpiece will require meticulous care and attention. While flossing may be a mundane task for many, it takes on a whole new level of importance with $1 million veneers.

As Lil Yachty leads the way with his extravagant dental investment, it is clear that the boundaries of dental artistry and self-expression continue to be pushed. Whether or not this trend catches on with other artists and celebrities, it is undeniable that Lil Yachty’s million-dollar smile has captured the imagination and admiration of many.

Lil Yachty took to Instagram Tuesday evening to show off his recent dental purchase. While the rapper has been known to wear iced-out grills, he decided to follow in Plies' footsteps and ditch the grills for veneers.

"It's the white teeth show, man. N***** lookin' and feelin' excellent," Yachty said in an Instagram Live session, which featured an appearance from Druski. "Imma smile for the rest of the week. For the rest of the month!"

Yachty spent much of the live session staring at and admiring his dental work. While interacting with fans, he revealed that he paid $80,000 for the new veneers.

"How much? $80K," Yachty responded. "Eighty K on the smile. You know I'm gonna be smiling for a while...We ain't worried about no grills right now."

More recently, Lil Yachty asked former President Donald Trump to commute Kodak Black's sentence. Last night, it was revealed that Kodak Black was included in Trump's list of pardons along with Lil Wayne and others .

Lil Yachty Unveils $1 Million Diamond Grills

The "Strike (Holster)" artist showed off his new smile and called celebrity dentist Thomas Connelly "my brother for life."

Lil Yachty  has yet another reason to smile.

On Thursday night, the ATL rapper took to Instagram to unveil his wildly expensive work by Thomas Connelly, a.k.a. the "Father of Diamond Dentistry.”

A short video clip shows Connelly holding Yachty’s dental impression with diamond veneers placed on his upper molars. He confirmed that the four veneers (two on each side) were 16 carats and worth a whopping $1,050,000.

“Boat Boy freezing,” Connelly captioned another post, which credited the grills to the Los Angeles-based Angel City Jewelers.

Yachty reshared the snapshots on his Instagram Stories, also highlighting his other iced-out accessories.

“17 carats in left ear, 16 carats in the teeth, and the ring 22 carats,” he wrote . “Don’t pop it to me kiddo. @Conellydds my brother for life.”

lil yachty veneers

Yachty is, of course, no stranger to mouth jewelry. The Grammy-nominated rapper reportedly dropped $35,000 on rainbow grills back in 2017, but ultimately ditched the flashy look in favor of $80,000 pearly veneers.

“It’s the white teeth show, man. N***a’s lookin’ and feelin’ excellent,” he said during a 2021 Instagram Live broadcast. “I'mma smile for the rest of the week. For the rest of the month!”

Thomas Connelly has worked with some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment, including Cardi B, Offset, Post Malone, Chris Brown, and Odell Beckham Jr. He spoke about his process during a 2021 interview with Rolling Stone , shortly after he gave Posty a set of $1.6 million 40-carat fangs.

“It’s very difficult to cut holes in diamonds without destroying them,” he explained. “In order to make a diamond in the shape of a tooth—for example, if you get a six-carat canine tooth, you need a 12-carat raw cube. So there’s a lot of waste. That diamond, they could have got three or four other diamonds out of it, so we had to waste it in order to get it into shape…I’ve been talking to a few other people who were waiting to see how this turned out before they dropped their million. So we’ll see.”

Meet Thomas Connelly, The Dentist Who Did Lil Yachty’s $1 Million Diamond Teeth

Mail

Hip-Hop is forever growing and expanding since its inception. And while grills have always been a staple in rap culture, it seems there’s a new trend happening in 2023: placing permanent diamonds in your teeth.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Thomas Connelly, DDS (@connellydds)

Insert Lil Yachty, who recently got $1,050,000 worth of diamonds drilled permanently into his mouth. The genius behind the project is a man named Thomas Connelly, who has been deemed the “Father of Diamond Dentistry.” Connelly shared a clip to his own social media page of Yachty’s dental impression, confirming the two diamond teeth on his upper premolars amounted to 16 carats.

Connelly was the first person to start the trend of putting permanent diamonds in teeth, with his first client being rap superstar Post Malone. He takes pride in being the first person to start this trend, later working on superstars such as Offset, Odell Beckham Jr., Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Brown, Da Baby, and more.

lil yachty veneers

One look at Connelly, and it’s hard to believe he’s a dentist, given his physique and tattoos.

“I’m that guy that’s a complete mystery when you meet me, “ Connelly states with a laugh. “It’s funny, people always feel like they’re meeting somebody famous. People always ask ‘what do you do?!’ It’s almost always the same thing: UFC fighter.”

Which isn’t too far off. Connelly is a professional bodybuilder who competes and wins competitions. But he’s also a dentist, which sometimes blows people’s minds when they hear it.

The Source spoke with Thomas Connelly to discuss his background, being the first to do permanent diamond fangs on Post Malone, Lil Yachty reaching out, doing Offset’s teeth,

You’re a dentist and a bodybuilder. What came first?

The dentistry. I worked out when I was a kid, dabbled in working out and lifting weights. Really became a professional bodybuilder later in life after becoming a dentist.

Where are you from, and how’d you get your start?

I grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Went to dentist school in Detroit, then picked up my stuff and moved to the East Coast. New York, Boston, practiced there for a while. Moving to Los Angeles will be a decade later.

When you pick up the Father of Diamond Dentistry?

I did some work with Post Malone about five years ago. We permanently installed diamonds in his fangs. I’m the first person to really do that. Rolling Stone did an article and it really stuck. If you Google it, it’s everywhere.

You were the first ones to permanently put diamonds in teeth?

Yeah, consistently on a regular basis. Not just doing it, meaning doing it where it’s retained. It’s cleansable, it functions, and it’s a piece of Art. It’s not something we threw in the mouth and hoped it worked. We did a lot of research and development to curate a beautiful result.

Was it nerve-racking? Because it’s permanent.

We failed a lot in the laboratory setting. We wasted between a million and two million dollars worth of diamonds, testing. Initially we  were putting little diamond shapes, recessing them within the veneer. I was really the first person to do that. When you feel your veneer, it was smooth, but there’d be a diamond heart in it.  When we met Post Malone, I was with my diamond cutter, Isaac from Angel City Jewelers. I was in Madison Square Garden, and we showed them all kinds of cool stones. They do all these skull shapes. Post said let’s do the whole tooth in diamonds. Isaac’s like, “of course we can do it!”

How did you link with Post Malone?

Such a good question. [laughs] I was pretty heavy in the model world. I performed dentistry on a lot of beautiful women, a lot of NFL players and sports players at that point in my career. I wanted to push my services into different industries other than modeling and sports, so we began to focus on the music industry. I ran into Dre in London. “Hey Dre, this is what I do…” and he goes “Yeah, every dentist wants to do Post’s teeth. I’ll put you on the list.” They had signed a new artist named Tyla Yaweh. I said hey, you just signed Tyla. His teeth look terrible, I’ll do his teeth for free.

Dre said, “Alright, we’ll do that.” So that moved me to the front of the line. When I met Tyla, Tyla was a wreck. [laughs] We fully restored his mouth. I said bro when I’m done with you, you gotta introduce me to Post. Because he was the opening act for Post on tour. He said “I can do that,” and he did. It changed dentistry. As crazy as that sounds, up until that point, there wasn’t anybody doing really crazy stuff or anything outside the envelope. It spread like wildfire. We started on one level and now it’s even bigger stones. More stones, more expensive stones. It was one million, $2 million, $3 million. It’s a beast.

Veneers aren’t cheap. When you were offering that to Tyla, you were down for the investment?

$100 grand. I’ve been doing this 26 years, that’s all I do.

How did you link with Lil Yachty?

He hit me on Instagram. A lot of these guys hit me on IG, it’s so frequent. He said “Bro, I gotta have this.” I said sweet, let’s do it. Where are you at this week? He gave me his schedule. I said, I’ll hit you in Austin. Literally jumped on a plane the next day. Flew to Austin, he had a show. I went to his show, went to his hotel room. I measured his teeth, took some permanent impressions. Booked him 3 weeks later in LA, we did it. Started his tour, we finished.

That’s really how it’s done. I’m willing to travel and do whatever. Usually the first meeting is hey, we get the preliminary impressions. We talk the numbers, we have sample stones. That usually closes the deal. That makes it organized, because it’s real. Who pays the bills? I send them an invoice before we start. I need approval. This is all from experience. [laughs]

Talk about the process of putting the diamonds in Lil Yachty’s mouth. $1 million is insane!

It’s just under $1.1 million, $1.05 million . It’s based on the size of the karats, and color of the stones. He’s a tough case because we started with bigger stones and had to trim them down. He’s supposed to be 20 karats, I just couldn’t get it in there. So he’s 16 carats.

How long did it take?

When he comes in, the first procedure is a couple of hours. 3 or 4 weeks later, once it’s all ready, we install it. It takes me an hour.

Why do people want them permanently?

If you saw it, you’d know. It hits hard. He’s a smiley guy. He’s one of the most electric human beings I’ve ever met in my life. When he smiles, those stones just glisten. You look at it, literally: what is that? Do it again! The reason it’s become so popular is because it is absolutely stunning. It is not a gimmick. It’s legit, it looks good. It just fits. The thing that seems to be working: behind the eye teeth, we put two rounds –  two custom clusters on each side. That seems to hit. That hits real hard.

Talk about the bond you guys share, I saw he called you “my brother for life.”

We hit it off. He posted that. We were gonna do a funny skit, but didn’t have enough time. We had a good time. Texted here and there, “whatsupp.” “Hey, I’m going to be here. Stop by the show.” I do develop bonds with a lot of the guys. Like Gunna, I’m tight with Gunna. Post. Shaq.

What did you do for Shaq?

I did Shaq’s whole mouth of veneers, and did some grills for him. It’s cool. It’s really fun to be able to provide beautiful work, creative work. And really like the people you like. I’ve even considered limiting my practice to just men.

Oh wow. Why?

Because I enjoy what I do so much with all these athletes, singers. Once in a while, you get a glamorous, beautiful woman in there and it’s such a different gear. I’m very good at it, but you reach the point where you only want to do a certain type of work.  Women cosmetic dentistry is a different business.

Talk about doing Offset’s teeth also.

I have so much respect for Offset. Love Offset, this is Offset’s stuff right here. [points to shirt] That Offset and Travis Scott song “SAVE YOUR GRACE,” is so fire. You watch him, because Offset’s case was so complicated. I saw him while he’s recording his album. He gives you some snippets about the song. He posted his teeth, the final product. You feel like man, I was there.

How do you find time to work out and do dentistry?

I limit my patients to one a day. I’ll have somebody come in at 10am. Post came at noon yesterday, we went to 8pm. It’s me and him, we screw around. I worked out at 7am or 8am. Ate breakfast, ate lunch. We worked. I went home, had dinner with my kids. Put my kids to bed, so it’s a full day. I have an advantage over a regular dentist: “Oh, we have 50 patients today. 20 hygiene patients a week. A crown, this and that.” Me, I got one guy. And my fees reflect my experience; I’m very blessed.

Lil Yachty Debuts $1M Veneers After Feature On Drake’s New Album

Lil Yachty Debuts $1M Veneers After Feature On Drake’s New Album

Lil Yachty, the star rapper, is taking the meaning of “expensive taste” to a whole new level. He recently got a pair of custom veneers worth a staggering $1,050,000!

The rapper, whose real name is Miles McCollum, revealed his new chompers on Thursday. The artwork was done by none other than Thomas Connelly, D.D.S., a renowned dentist in Beverly Hills who has worked with numerous other celebrities, including Post Malone, Shaq, and Odell Beckham.

The custom veneers are a masterpiece, featuring 16 carats of diamonds with four custom-cut stones. Angel City Jewelers provided the stunning diamonds that adorn Lil Yachty’s teeth.

This isn’t the first time Lil Yachty has made headlines for his extravagant dental work. In 2018, he got a grill worth $250,000, which featured 300 diamonds.

Aside from his expensive dental work, Lil Yachty has had a remarkable year. He was featured on Drake’s new album and received high praise from Donald Glover for his collaboration with J. Cole on the track “Secret Recipe.”

Lil Yachty’s success in the music industry has allowed him to indulge in his luxury purchases, including his million-dollar veneers. However, maintaining such expensive dental work is no easy task. The rapper will need to take extra care of his teeth and invest in high-quality oral hygiene products.

The cost of maintaining $1 million veneers can be quite substantial. Regular dental check-ups, professional cleanings, and specialized oral care products are essential to keep the veneers in pristine condition.

Proper oral hygiene habits, including brushing and flossing meticulously, will be crucial to prevent any plaque or tartar buildup around the veneers. Flossing, in particular, is important for maintaining healthy gums and preventing gum disease, which can negatively impact the longevity of the veneers.

In addition to oral hygiene, Lil Yachty may also need to exercise caution when eating certain foods. Hard or sticky foods can potentially damage or dislodge the veneers, so it is advisable to avoid biting into hard candies, ice, or using the teeth as tools to open packages.

Regular dental visits are crucial for monitoring the health and condition of the veneers. The dentist will assess the integrity of the veneers, ensure proper fit, and address any concerns or issues that may arise. Additionally, professional cleanings will help keep the veneers free from stains and discoloration.

With his custom veneers, Lil Yachty is not only making a bold fashion statement but also investing in his overall oral health. While the price tag may be jaw-dropping, the rapper’s million-dollar smile reflects his success and dedication to his craft.

Lil Yachty’s extravagant dental work showcases the blending of art and dentistry, pushing the boundaries of self-expression and personal style. In an industry known for its penchant for opulence, Lil Yachty’s million-dollar veneers set a new standard for luxurious dental enhancements.

As the rapper continues to make waves in the music industry and expand his artistic endeavors, his million-dollar smile will undoubtedly become an iconic symbol of his success and unique sense of style. Lil Yachty’s custom veneers are a testament to his commitment to stand out and make a statement, both on and off the stage.

In conclusion, Lil Yachty’s $1,050,000 custom veneers truly redefine the concept of expensive taste. With 16 carats of diamonds and expert craftsmanship, his million-dollar smile is a work of art. The rapper’s dental journey highlights the intersection of music, fashion, and dental aesthetics, solidifying his status as a trendsetter in the industry. Maintaining such exquisite dental work will require proper oral hygiene and regular dental care to ensure the longevity and brilliance of the million-dollar veneers.

Lil Yachty

Nothing Can Faze Lil Yachty’s Confidence

Alex Gonzalez

Lil Yachty has come full circle. Before music, Yachty worked as a McDonald’s crew member, during which time, he crafted one of his artistic hallmarks — the signature vibrant red hair that made him stand out when he first stepped onto the scene.

Dropping tracks on Soundcloud in between shifts at Mickey D’s, Yachty maintained his momentum before deciding to move to New York to pursue music full-time. Nearly a decade later, Yachty delivered an energetic halftime performance at the 2024 McDonald’s All-American Games this past Tuesday (April 2). Additionally, he starred in a commercial for McDonald’s Canada , which featured him delivering a trippy rendition of the Menu Song.

Yachty’s most recent solo album Let’s Start Here showed us that his name is no longer synonymous with the Soundcloud era. Inspired by psychedelic sounds, Let’s Start Here proved to listeners that Yachty is serious about his artistry and is no flash-in-the-pan. And since its release over a year ago, Yachty has not taken his foot off the gas.

Last month, Yachty announced the launch of Concrete Recordz , as part of a partnership with Quality Control and HYBE. On the roster is his new rap collective, Concrete Boys, comprised of rappers Camo!, DC2TRILL, Draft Day, Karrahbooo, and Yachty himself.

Uproxx chatted with Yachty ahead of his halftime performance, as well as the release of Concrete Boys’ compilation album, It’s Us Vol., 1 , which is set to drop Friday (April 5). With 10 years in the game, Yachty isn’t letting up anytime soon — not before pushing more bounds with his own artistry, and cultivating a new generation of movers and shakers.

Hey Yachty, how are you?

I’m blessed, man. Happy that we are having nice sunny days. I had a milkshake. And I’m lactose [intolerant], but I took my lactose pills. I took two of them. And they’re working, so we’re good. It’s always a plus when you’re lactose, and you drink milk, and you’re good. That might be too much information, but you asked, and I’m truthful.

[Laughs] I’m not tripping. How are you feeling, leading up to your performance?

It’s always a good feeling to have a full-circle moment in life. I worked for McDonald’s, and it was the first job I ever had when I was 15 or 16 years old. My McDonald’s commercial also just came out for McDonald’s Canada.

I love your commercial. It’s really trippy! How did that collaboration come together?

Separate from this, actually, McDonald’s reached out. And they wanted to redo the classic song, and I thought that was awesome. And very few artists get the opportunity to do these types of things, so it was actually a no-brainer.

What are some of your fondest memories as a McDonald’s crew member?

My mom was a very business-savvy woman. I had long, black braids back then. When I was about to go in for my interview, my mom was like “Oh, you can’t have braids, you have to look professional if you want to get hired.” She took me to the barbershop, and she made me cut off my hair.

I went to the interview, got hired, and on my first day working, everyone had long hair. I remember coming home to my mom crying and being like “You made me cut my hair! I would’ve still gotten the job.”

She felt so bad, and she was like “Okay, well let’s do something different.”

And I was like “I don’t have hair,” and then she said “dye it red.”

That’s the origin of my red hair.

And you’ve never shared that before?

You honestly just unlocked that memory in my brain. I forgot all about that.

So you’ve got It’s Us Vol. 1 , dropping Friday. It’s the first album with the Concrete Boys crew. What was the process like assembling talent for this collective?

These are my friends. So it wasn’t like I was looking high and low for talent. These were friends that I’ve made along the way. The most important thing to me is my friendships — and trying to bring everyone up to a level of success so they can provide for their families is the goal. Plus, I’ve always just loved the idea of groups and crews.

How do you envision your label Concrete Rekordz growing, say five or 10 years from now?

Man, that’s more than enough time. You could say one year from now. But five or 10 years from now? That’s much more time than any artist needs to become successful. I want to make sure I say that. With today’s time, and internet [platforms], six months is all you need. But in five years, I plan to have four moguls, doing their own things, starting their own labels.

Your last album, Let’s Start Here was a sonic risk, as you experimented with psychedelic sounds. What kind of sounds are you exploring for your next project?

I can’t tell you, my guy. But what I will tell you is that I’m definitely not done taking risks. I can’t say what I’m doing next, but I can say that I’m not done taking risks. That wasn’t a one-and-done.

You also have an album with James Blake coming out soon. What can you tell us about that?

I’m really excited about it. It’s really amazing. When [artists] make collab projects, I think a lot of times, they don’t access the full extent of what could be. Me and James really connected and just created a brotherhood. We made a really special project that is far beyond both of us, and I’m super excited for it to come out.

Can you give us a hint as to when it’s going to drop?

It keeps getting pushed back, man. It was it was supposed to come out this month. But I don’t know if it will. But it’s done. Mixed and mastered.

So earlier this week, you said that some rappers are angry because they’re “ ugly as f*ck ,” and therefore, lack confidence. What would you say is the key to maintaining confidence?

[Laughs] Well, I was just talking sh*t. But, I don’t know, man. I don’t take things too serious. I enjoy the life that I was given and try to stay stress-free. I’m well aware of the blessings and the cards I was dealt, and I’m just grateful. I think I can I can only speak for myself when I say that it’s very easy to be happy.

It’s been about a decade since you moved from Atlanta to New York to pursue music. As an artist, and now, the owner of your own label, what would you say is the biggest thing you’ve learned in your career?

Staying true to yourself and not letting anyone’s negative comments bring you down. The negative side of the internet isn’t real. It’s not a real place. It’s all just trolls and make-believe. It’s not real, it doesn’t translate over into the real world.

Lil Yachty: The Full Profile

Home » Artist » Lil Yachty: The Full Profile

As someone who would describe himself as more of an artist than a rapper, Lil Yachty burst onto the scene in 2016 after one of his SoundCloud tracks went viral. Since then, his aptitude on social media has kept him afloat and kept the collaboration requests rolling in. But what type of a man is Lil Yachty really, and what does the future have in store for him?

Lil Yachty was born under the name Miles Parks McCollum in Mableton, Georgia. He grew up in Atlanta and was introduced to a life of media production through his father, Shannon McCollum, a well-known photographer. At an early age, he became accustomed to being in front of a camera and was introduced to music of many genres, inspiring him to be someone that didn’t hold to one version of what art could be. His musical influences ranged from the likes of Kanye West and Soulja Boy to Coldplay and Fall Out Boy to classics like the Beatles.

Growing up, Lil Yachty wasn’t afraid to stand out. He liked fashion, he liked bright colors, and he was bullied for it. But he always knew that his differences were what made him stand apart from others, distinct and memorable instead of fading into the background. He would use that to build his brand and his following.

Going Viral: A Burgeoning Career

Lil Yachty has been grouped with a new generation of rappers. These rappers gain huge fan bases from social media and achieve fame by going viral off Soundcloud and other media platforms. The longevity of their careers depends on if they can adapt to the new trends and keep their fans while remaining distinctly themselves.

The Beginning of Lil Yachty, the Artist

In 2015, Miles Parks McCollum decided to move to New York City after living in Atlanta and working at McDonald’s. He stayed with a friend and lived humbly, slowly building up his social media presence and networking skills. This slow pace led to him attending college at Alabama State University for what would only be a short two months, before he decided to move back and fully dedicate himself to cultivating a network of like-minded artists. Thus, Miles McCollum became Lil Yachty.

Going Viral

Lil Yachty got his start on Soundcloud, where his song “One Night” went viral after it was used in a comedy video. With these newfound thousands of eyes on him, he was able to capitalize on his months of hard work networking with fashion personalities and get a job modeling for Kanye West’s 2016 Yeezy show in Madison Square Garden.

Soon after his modeling exposure, he released his first mixtape Lil Boat , which peaked at 106th on the US Billboard 200. The rest of 2016 was filled with successful collaborations and featuring spots. Two features in particular, on “Broccoli” by DRAM and “iSpy” by Kyle, were extremely well received and were nominated for numerous awards, putting Lil Yachty firmly in the public eye.

Signing With a Label

Nearly a year after signing a joint record deal with Motown Records, Quality Control Music, and Capitol Records, Lil Yachty released his first full-length studio album, Teenage Emotions, in May of 2017. The album peaked at 5th on the US Billboard 200 and paved the way for two additional studio albums released in 2018, Lil Boat 2 and Nuthin’ 2 Prove respectively.

Throughout 2019 and 2020, Lil Yachty continued his streak of features and collaborations with other artists until he released his fourth studio album in May of 2020, Lil Boat 3 . The album peaked at 14th on the US Billboard 200, the lowest position of any of his albums. However, the lower ranking of his last album didn’t deter the rapper’s determination at all. In fact, it was seemingly bolstered by the fact that Drake , a man who Lil Yachty has long looked up to and idolized, featured on one of Lil Yachty’s Lil Boat 3 tracks, “Oprah’s Bank Account.”

Image and Musical Style

A unique figure in the crowd, Lil Yachty has long said he doesn’t want to be put in a mold, stuck in one genre or image. He wants to be considered an artist more than a rapper.

When Lil Yachty broke out on the scene, he was instantly recognizable for his brightly dyed red hair with beads, usually styled artfully in his face. However, 2020 saw the rapper ditch the red braids for his natural black color. Although some fans tried to analyze it as a sign of a turn to darker tones in his music, Lil Yachty has maintained that (much like Ariana Grande) his new hair is due to the strain that the red dye had on his hair, causing it to not grow correctly and to even fall out. So yes, the red dye is gone, but he still maintains his braids and beads.

Although Lil Yachty once was well known for his sparkling grill, nowadays, you’ll see him rocking a pair of very expensive veneers, as has been the trend for social media stars in 2020.

As someone who has deliberately kept a more mysterious and yet still open persona, Lil Yachty doesn’t have a specific style. Or, at least he won’t share it. He seems to be open to all types of fashion but isn’t one to follow specific trends. He does what he feels looks and feels right in the moment, whether it be matching his beads to his clothes or admiring crop tops on men.

For a man with such a unique combination of influences, styles, likes, and dislikes, defining him is actually very straightforward. He’s easygoing. This easygoing nature is what has appealed to his fans for so long. He’s humorous, fun, and distinctly lighthearted, a recipe for success on social media.

Musical Style

Early on in his career, Lil Yachty’s music was disregarded by established rappers who thought his generation of Soundcloud rappers wasn’t authentic or real to the genre. He was accused of being style over substance, with his rap style specifically being called “ mumble rap .”

These early criticisms didn’t seem to phase Lil Yachty much, as he had long wanted himself to be genre-defying with his music anyways. He rejected restrictions of what people consider to be real rap. As his fanbase is mainly young like him, he wants to remain relatable, wholesome even, wanting to rap more about teenage life than alcohol and drugs. In fact, in his early days, he claimed to not like the taste of alcohol or the effects of drugs, saying he didn’t need either in his life.

Lil Yachty has described his music as “happy bubblegum trap” and “boat music,” an interesting choice of description since three of his four albums are named Lil Boat 1 , Lil Boat 2 , and Lil Boat 3 .

He wants his music to be fun and genre defying. To that end, he raps about video games and samples music and themes from cartoons to include in his songs. Lighthearted and fun, Lil Yachty doesn’t want his music to be a copy of rappers before him; he wants to be distinctly unique. An artist more than a rapper, a recognizable brand above all else.

Accomplishments

With 14 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs, four full studio albums, and a fervent young fan base founded on social media, Lil Yachty is quickly blazing a path in the music industry. He continues to reap the rewards of his hard-won networking skills, collaborating with dozens of rappers and producers – some up and coming, while others are people he has admired for ages. In 2016, he even appeared in a Sprite commercial with Lebron James, expanding his network even further beyond artists in the music business.

Lil Yachty has appeared in three movies: Life-Size 2: A Christmas Eve , Long Shot , and How High 2 . He has also done voice work in one animated movie: Teen Titans Go! To the Movies .

Personal Life

Although he gained fame through social media, Lil Yachty’s personal life has been fairly quiet when compared to the blatant over-exposure of other artists and influencers.

Famous Friends and Feuds

At the beginning of his career, Lil Yachty was a part of a group called The Sailing Team, composed of other rappers and producers such as K$upreme, Burberry Perry, and his own sister Kodie Shane. However, since 2019 Lil Yachty has stated that The Sailing Team is no more, claiming that his effort in the group outweighed the rest of their contributions.

Lil Yachty gained his initial fame from social media. He owes much to it, and yet it has also landed him in controversy and feuds. Most controversy comes from his twitter account, and song lyrics, namely his song “E-ER,” which fans have felt sexualizes a female TikTok star inappropriately.

One of Lil Yachty’s most famous controversies was a three-day feud with Soulja Boy over a photo and leaked audio. It resulted in a public reconciliation over social media and a few extra thousand followers each for them.

Issues With the Law

In 2015, Lil Yachty was arrested in Florida for credit card fraud and stayed in jail until he paid a bail of $11,000. He cited the incident as something he never wanted to repeat. However, the dreaded year of 2020 brought more issues with the law in the form of speeding and crashing Ferraris.

He is also currently being sued for assault and battery following an altercation with a man during the 2019 Rolling Loud festival.

What’s Next?

Lil Yachty has promised his fans new music for 2021 and has so far released a music video called “ Royal Rumble ,” a collaboration with six other rappers all hailing from Michigan. He also has plans to tour starting in May, with a stop at the Rolling Loud Festival in Portugal in June.

Beyond music, he will have a role in the upcoming Mattel Films movie based on the game Uno. So far, it is said to be a heist movie based in Atlanta, following Atlanta’s underground hip hop culture.

Other than that, he stays a constant influence on social media, recently showing off his closet and impressive collection of shoes. As someone who was built on the backbone of social media, the race to stay relevant is ever important to an artist such as Lil Yachty. The music industry held more interest in him in the beginning of his career, as he had skyrocketed so fast and so young into the public eye. However, Lil Yachty still peaks interest and is bound to remain in the game for a while, if at least due to his business skills.

Lil Yachty, Who Worked at McDonald's As a Teen, Stars in a New Ad for the Golden Arches

Lil Yachty has gone from working at McDonald's as a teenager in Atlanta to starring in commercials for the iconic Golden Arches brand.

Lil Boat adds to his list of lucrative partnerships while teaming up with McDonald's Canada on Tuesday (April 2) for the launch of their Remix Menu.

As part of the celebration, Yachty starred in a colorful Mickey D's commercial that finds him rhyming about his favorite menu items for a remix of the fast food chain's 1988 "Menu Song," which was based on the 1974 song "Life Is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)," a top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit for Reunion.

With a heavily Auto-Tuned flow, the 26-year-old runs through some of his go-to's, like a Big Mac, McDouble, McNuggets, fries, apple pies, McGriddles and a hot fudge sundae to complete his epic order.

"Going from working at a McDonald's in Atlanta to collaborating on the ‘Remix Menu Song' with McDonald's Canada is a wild full circle moment that brought back memories and is such a reminder that anything in life can happen," Boat said in a statement about the partnership.

From now until April 29, participating McDonald's locations across Canada will have the new Remix Menu available to customers. Some of the items include wild combinations such as the Chicken Cheeseburger, Surf ‘N Turf Burger, Sweet Chilli Junior Chicken and the tasty Apple Pie McFlurry.

"We hope these new takes on the McDonald's Menu Song, brought to life by Lil Yachty and Mike Clay, will evoke the excitement Canadians felt for McDonald's the first time they heard the song, and look forward to introducing it to a new generation of fans," said McDonald's chief marketing officer Alyssa Buetikofer.
