In its broadest sense, the term “cruiser” or “cruising motor yacht” refers to pleasure vessels that are intended and have the capabilities to travel reasonably long distances while providing all of the amenities of comfortable day-to-day living to their passengers and crew. Our specialty is helping customers in the purchase or selling process of cruising boats and yachts of all types, sizes, and price ranges. Beyond that, cruising motor yachts come in many different sizes and forms, from smaller yachts that were typical of brands like Sea Ray. Meridian, Carver, and Chris-Craft to mid-size motor yachts like Tiara, Hatteras, and Ocean Alexander, and up through the megayachts and superyachts such as Burger, Benetti, and Heesen. 

All cruising motor yachts share a common emphasis on providing a level of living comfort while underway and in port. Megayachts and superyachts are motor yachts, just larger and more luxurious than the norm. At one time, a 75-foot yacht was a “really big” yacht. Then, in the 1980s, motor yachts in the 100- to 200-foot range, dubbed “megayachts”, became more common. And in the latter part of the 20th century, we began to see more and more yachts 200 feet and longer — until today we see yachts being built that are 400 feet LOA and larger. These latter vessels have come to be known as “superyachts”.

The important fact to understand, when considering what type and what size yacht to buy, is that cruising motor yachts are like houses when it comes to day-to-day living — some people can live comfortably in very modest surroundings, while others require significantly more space and radically more elaborate accommodations. And what you get in those respects is, all other things being equal, only as much as you can afford to pay.

What differences do you find between a “cruising yacht” and an “expedition yacht”?

Cruising means different things to different people. Consequently, so does the term “cruising yacht”. However, as mentioned above, in its broadest sense, a cruising yacht is a pleasure vessel that incorporates a significant level of interior accommodations, as well as enough capacity for fuel and freshwater to make some longer trips possible without seeking refills of either. An “expedition yacht” is, on the other hand, a vessel that is (also) suited for long open-water passages and extended trips to remote, less-developed areas of the world, where support services are scant. Consequently, a sharp demarcation does not exist between “cruising” and “expedition” yachts, but rather they exist on a continuum which has short hops and brief periods of liveaboard at the one end and long, open-water passages and extended times away from the support of industrialized society at the other.

Why not just buy an expedition yacht and have the toughest, longest-range vessel available?

In a word, cost. You must pay for long range and the ability to travel to remote areas of the world where you’re pretty much on your own for extended periods of time. Either that or trade off other features that would otherwise enhance your enjoyment of your yacht is she were better suited to cruising alongshore or island hopping — if that’s what you’re going to use her for.

There’s a lot of talk in yachting circles about finding “the perfect yacht” but the fact is no yacht is perfect for all reasons and all people. The key is to look for a yacht that’s perfect for you and what you plan to do with her. And assuming your budget is finite, the way to do that is to pay for what you need to satisfy your needs and requirements and not end up paying for features you will never make use of. Which is one reason to employ the help of a professional broker or yacht sales advisor.

I see some yachts advertised for sale as “sportfishing yachts” or “convertible sportfishermen”. I don’t want to fish, but could one of these be used for cruising?

The short answer is yes, albeit with some qualification. Indeed, some yachtsmen who rarely if ever fish, in fact, prefer to cruise aboard the kind of yacht nominally classified as a sportfishing vessel. 

Convertible sportfishing yachts generally have a deck layout in which a much larger proportion of space is given over to an aft cockpit than in the average motor yacht. They are also, in general, fitted with a more elaborate flybridge deck, sometimes enclosed and climate-controlled, but more often open to the weather. All of which combines to create a vessel that is well suited to the semi-tropics where those aboard tend to spend more time on deck, both when operating the vessel and when lounging, relaxing, and cooking.

As well, sportfishing yachts will usually have one or even two fewer staterooms or sleeping cabins than a motor yacht of the same overall size. And they may incorporate more casual inside cooking and dining layouts, for example, a country-style kitchen (galley) that is open to the saloon area. Against that, sportfishing yachts often have larger engines and fuel tanks for better range and higher top speeds than motor yachts of roughly equivalent size. 

But the bottom line is that, if you tend toward an active, outdoor lifestyle and intend to spend significant periods in more temperate climes, even the sub-tropics, then you might find a “convertible” sportfishing yacht more suited to your tastes and requirements for cruising than a more conventional “sedan” style motor yacht. 

How many staterooms should a cruising motor yacht have?

The obvious answer is as many as you need. Which, by the way, is not the same as the number you may think you want.

Again, unless your budget is effectively unlimited, every stateroom you have detracts from the floor space and volume of the common areas of a yacht, both interior and exterior.

I’ve seen a few sizable cruising motor yachts that had only a single stateroom. And in such cases, guest sleeping accommodations were provided in the form of a convertible sofa or two in the yacht’s common area. 

The theory behind that kind of layout is that sleeping accommodations for two or even four guests is an occasional need and not one for which the yachts owner(s) want to give up serious spaciousness in the yachts other living spaces for the sake providing a guest stateroom or two that will only be used, perhaps, 10% of less of the total time the yacht is in service.

An outstanding 1967 73’Custom-Built Long-Distance, Ocean Crossing, Flush Deck Cruiser, well known as a “little ship”, is now on the market!

Pioneer was built in 1966-67 in Chula Vista, CA as a customized offshore yacht to meet the highest industrial and military standards of that time. The design was developed by GEORGE MOORE, a naval architect from SanDiego who spent time with the world class Kettenburg Company. The significant results from George’s design was an advanced build that focused on luxurious comfort, seaworthiness, stream lined beauty and a large hull designed extremely strong  meeting operating economy while gliding through the water. She is a one-of-a-kind and built to order. Some say unusually overbuilt for the early days of long distant cruising boats and too expensive to be built in todays competitive market. It begins with a fiberglass hull that is 6″ thick, 70’ WL (73’ LOA), 20 1/2’ beam, 6 1/2’ draft, full displacement that comes in at 91 net tons/130 gross tons. Her interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 6 people in 3 staterooms including a full-beam master suite on the lower deck aft. Her elegant choices of wood throughout the vessel, create a warm cozy living space. The mechanics of the design were chosen to perfectly match the heavy-duty hull with redundancies everywhere.

Over her very active history Pioneer has completed many ocean passages, including dozens of long distance non-stop coastal passages (e.g. non-stop from Southern California to Hawaii, Mexico and now cruising the coastal waters of British Columbia up to Alaska

Pioneer has had 4 owners and was based in Southern California and Hawaii during her first 33 years. For the last 19 years Pioneer has been based in the PNW with annual trips north to and as far as Alaska.

Pioneer had a full time captain for 27+ years working for the 1st and 3rd owners The current owners have operated the vessel without crew since purchasing the boat, often spending weeks at anchor in extreme comfort while living onboard before going in for supplies.

Some notable events regarding Pioneer, while in Hawaii, she has been in a few movies with Harrison Ford and also Robert Wagner. A gorgeous well built yacht is now waiting for the next adventure.

This is a very spacious open room that contains the main engines and generators, work bench, drill press, electric grinder, acetylene torch, air compressor, an extensive selection of tools and test equipment, spare parts for many of the ships mechanical and electrical systems, copper plumbing for the 12 diesel fuel tanks, fuel circulating and transfer pumps, hot water heater, water maker, 2   battery banks, 2 inverters and a battery charger, 100 gal. bulk oil storage tank and more . Ample work space with 6′ 6″+ head room and great walk around access on 7 sides of the 2 main engines and 2 generators

• Twin Disk MG 509  Marine Gearbox– 2.95 to 1, Hydraulic
• 2″ Drive Shafts, Monel Steel – thru stuffing box to 5-blade props

• Dual fuel circulating and polishing pump system with 2 750 Luberfiner primary filters for trapping contaminates and water and recirculating fuel back into the fuel storage tank to maintain a clean source of diesel.
• Secondary Dahl #200 fuel filter/water separators after the Day Tank,plus built-in engine fuel pump filters.
• 2 x fuel transfer pumps with flow meter,.
• All fuel passes through a polishing/filtering system prior entering the Day Tank
• Built-in hand oil sump pump for each engine making for easy oil changes.
• Oil changed and analyzed regularly.

• Well ventilated Engine room via high 2 speed fans bringing in fresh clean air from the flybridge ,  away from salty sea spray.

Note: The choice of Cummins motors for the generators was because the 4 motors share a lot of common parts including starter motor, fuel solenoid, raw water pump, full flow and by-pass filters and so on. The common parts reduce the need to store different parts for different make engines which is often the case on pleasure yachts that are built for long distance travel to remote places where parts have to be air shipped in at great expense and loss of time.

Interior Layout

Pioneer’s thoughtful layout is an ideal comfortable cruising design. She has 6′ 6″+ head room throughout. On the lower deck the owner’s family aft suites are inspired by the idea of providing comfort and privacy, with a gorgeous spacious master suite aft; crew quarters  were   located forward accessed by a separate set of stairs from the salon. The salon and galley are midship on the main deck and above the engine room with the wheelhouse forward with large windows throughout the main deck cabins. Exotic woods  were used everywhere bringing in rich grains and warm tones  using first growth Burmese teak on the main deck, American Black Walnut in the master stateroom, Oak and Mahogany in the other 2 staterooms with carved solid wood closet doors of exceptional quality and design in all 3 staterooms. Beautiful hardware on all doors. . The exterior deck is open and safe, allowing anyone to enjoy the beautiful location you happen to be while at anchor or underway!

Cabins 1 x King Master, 2 x Twin Doubles

• Excellent cabin layouts – The master stateroom is full beam aft with a walk around King bed, 2 large lockers (6’ wide lighted hanging closets port and starboard, storage below the bed and end tables)

• Forward Guest stateroom: 3rd stateroom is located forward of the engine room. It includes 2 raised single beds, built-in bureaus, a hanging locker and large storage cabinets under each bed, which is all finished in rich mahogany. This stateroom was originally designed for crew with ladder access from the stateroom to the main deck forward of the wheelhouse. This allowed for the owner’s privacy in the main cabin.
• Private guest head adjacent to the forward stateroom recently upgraded to match master en suite.
• Included in this section of the vessel is a walk-in deep freeze/pantry/beverage storage room (325 cu. Ft.),
• Further aft is a huge stand up engine room and workshop with 3 watertight access doors
• A large storage room is to port, just  aft of the engine room. This space is currently used for spare parts, plumbing systems,  electrical panels, carpet cleaner, vacuum cleaner and other items

The side and salon doors are used for adjusting fresh air flow and a comfortable temperature while underway

Exterior Layout

• As you enter up the steps from the swim platform you come to a large covered open space which is used for outdoor relaxing, dining and entertainment. A removable dinning table can be set up when required.
• Aft to either side is built-in bench seating. Complete canvas/screen sides can be attached to help block winds.
• A washer and dryer are located inside a built-in cabinet on the starboard side below a large window/pass through opening to the galley. The aft deck space easily accommodates 8 people for a meal and has had up to 18 on special occasions.
• Very spacious wide side decks for easy movement back and forth, front to back, on both sides of the main cabin.
• From the aft deck there are full width steps to the flybridge deck and the swim platform (no awkward ladders to negotiate).
• The forward deck has spacious room in front of the wheelhouse to put a table or seating for relaxing, refreshments or dining;  plus a large storage locker in front of the wheelhouse for fenders, dock lines, water hoses and other items. In this storage locker there is an access hatch and ladder leading to the forward guest stateroom on the lower deck. All deck surfaces and steps are painted width non-skid

Fly bridge Deck

• Access to the flybridge is achieved via a wide molded stairway leading upwards from the Main deck aft deck, or up a classic wooden staircase located in the wheelhouse
• The flybridge/sun deck has a limited helm station forward with 3 Captain seats center  and 2 front facing bench seats with storage below on port and starboard and additional storage under the dashboard forward of the seating.
• Large engine room fan intake units used for salt free air to cool the engine room, are located here behind the front facing seats with storage underneath.
• The dry stack funnel centered adds to the lines of this beautiful ship and there is more seating on both sides with more storage underneath.
• An insulated block ice box is located on the starboard side and a vented storage cabinet is on the port side.
• Further aft there is a huge open space for storage and relaxing, with a mounted storage box center, 16 person life raft on port and a 2,000 lb. 360 degree electric davit mounted on the starboard side, as well as spare anchors.
• The flybridge deck is a prime space for making an enclosed sky lounge on the forward half reconfigured for a wonderful living/entertainment area. In recent years Pioneer carried 2 16’ 2 person kayaks, a 11’ rigid bottom inflatable and outboard with a 15 HP outboard motor, a 14” Whitehall rowing/sailing boat, and a touring bicycle. (Please note these items are not included in the sale of the vessel)

Hull and Deck Construction

The hull construction is of the highest quality fire retardant F/G resin reinforced with multiple layers of woven roving making a 1 ½” laminate on the inside and 1 ½” on the outside; and a 3” foam core center made up of 4” X 3” horizontal foam strips wrapped with F/G woven roving and resin making the boat hull solid, and able to stay afloat in the event of a severe break in the hull due to an impact accident. At the keel the F/G hull is reinforced up to 6” on the radius’. Internally the boat hull is further protected with built in 12 x F/G fuel tanks (3,925 US gals) surrounding the sides and bottom of the hulls interior, effectively creating a double hull below the water line.

Come aboard this Pilothouse trawler at aft cockpit via swim platform and transom door. Note how flybridge deck fully covers cockpit area with teak and holly deck with hatch access to steering and storage. Walk through centerline aft door into salon. Observe 6' 5" headroom throughout interior. Notice long cushioned settee to port and mounted table with folding leaves, and comfortable upholstered swivel chairs to starboard. Note parquet sole with hatch access to engine room. Appreciate the amount of light in salon from large windows. A true long range cruising yacht

The Oyster 745 is well-provisioned for long haul bluewater cruising. The smallest boat in the Oyster fleet with dedicated crew quarters, you can enjoy time at the helm, or let the crew take over while you relax and enjoy the view with family and friends.

Choose from a variety of options to accommodate up to four crew, the standard layout offers a double bunk crew cabin forward, linear galley with a further double ensuite cabin which can be used for crew or guests. This yacht also has the option for a full width galley, offering two double bunk crew cabins in the bow, with two heads.

There are plenty of opportunities to add a personal touch to almost every aspect of the interior, from your choices of wood and fabric, to entertainment, connectivity and navigation equipment.

Engineering features are easily accessible, with a large engine room under the saloon sole with room for two generators. Services and systems are clearly labelled and easily accessed. Intelligent design makes use of every available space for storage and the optional extended transom opens up a larger, full width lazarette for all your bluewater cruising and water sports gear.

True liveaboard luxury

As you would expect on an offshore sailboat, the Oyster 745 is luxurious and well-appointed, for weekend cruising or setting sail around the world. Below decks, the large hull volume offers versatile choices to customise the layout. The generous aft ensuite owner’s cabin is luxurious and light, with signature triple Seascape windows connecting you to spectacular views. A further three ensuite guest cabins let you make the most of the space. The forward-opening saloon windows and Seascapes flood the saloon with light, making it a delightful space in which to entertain or relax. Her saloon table can seat eight or more comfortably, or you can dine in the cockpit with up to 12 guests on the fold-out table with its integrated refrigerator. Mood lighting and air-conditioning come as standard, along with forced-air ventilation to keep the yacht dry and comfortable in any climate.

THE LUXURY OF SPACE

This expansive 75 foot sailboat is designed for sailing and relaxing in style. The protected guest cockpit is incredibly comfortable, with 20% more space than our smaller models. With up to ten berths in five double cabins, all with ensuite bathrooms, the 745 offers ample space and privacy. From the generous and luxurious owners’ cabin aft to the crew quarters forward, there is room for everyone.

The forward twin bunk cabin with ensuite gives your crew room to relax and recharge, with a separate access hatch so they can operate the boat without disturbing you and your guests.

Hidden beneath the saloon sole, the fully sound insulated engine room contains an Onan MDKDV e-QD 230V AC generator to run all your amenities. Fitted with a sound shield it run silently when in use and has a remote start/stop.

Like all our new models, the 745’s hulls and deck mouldings are certified by Lloyd’s Register for build quality, strength and integrity. They also meet the stringent EU RCDII standards.

Every aspect of her design and equipment has been refined to create a beautiful and practical yacht. Featuring signature Seascape windows, it also boasts retractable hydraulic bow and stern thrusters as standard, air conditioning and a water maker.

Oyster’s craftspeople spend hundreds of hours creating the contemporary solid wood interiors with a stunning choice of unexpected woods including walnut, ash and cherry.

The fold down hydraulic transom bathing platform is perfect to pull up to in your tender or to dive in for a refreshing dip. Push-button controlled, it has teak plank decking, swim ladders and a pair of removable dinghy bumper bars.

The extended transom option opens up a full width lazarette for extra storage, ideal for all your water sports kit. It also provides extra entertaining space on the aft deck.

Step on and off your 745 in style with a retractable hydraulic passerelle, with remote control or operated from the cockpit or your smartphone. Extending 1.9m from inside the transom, it is finished in stylish teak decking with stainless-steel details.

For Sale: Horizon Power Catamarans 52

The Horizon Power Catamarans 52 delivers a bluewater cruiser that’s capable of long-range voyages with home-size volume. Sunbird , a 2022 build, is currently listed for sale through Horizon Powercat Co for $2.145 million. The 52-footer ticks all the boxes with its three-stateroom, two-head layout that sleeps six, multiple exterior entertainment spaces and a well-appointed galley.

Sunbird has a reported 21-knot top hop thanks to twin 550 hp Cummins QSB 6.7 diesels. At 18 knots, this power cat should have a 400-nautical-mile range. Dial it back to 8 knots, and range increases about 1,000 nautical miles. Maximum range is 1,780 nautical miles at just under 5 knots. The Horizon PC52 has a 4-foot-6-inch minimum draft, enabling it to cruise safely over shallow waters.

When it’s time to turn in for the evening, the three staterooms are belowdecks. The starboard hull houses the master stateroom with an en suite head aft and a queen berth forward. The port hull has the VIP stateroom forward with a queen berth. The second head is positioned between the VIP stateroom and the third guest stateroom, which has twin berths that convert to a queen berth with an insert.

Guest can enjoy shaded dining with a view in the cockpit at the high-gloss teak table and transom bench seat. Pull up a few chairs and there’s space for six.

Alfresco dining spaces are also found on the flybridge where guests can enjoy cocktails and conversation at an L-shaped dinette to port or relax on the lounge pad forward and to starboard.

Sunbird has an aft-galley aft layout, which makes serving guests in the cockpit and the salon easy. And for chefs who strive to please everyone, the salon is large enough to accommodate several chefs simultaneously, and is equipped with a Miele cooktop, Miele speed oven and full-sized refrigerator. The galley’s countertop bar also has three stools and is sure to be a gathering spot after hours.

We recently reported on the construction process for the Horizon PC52, “This open-water capable powercat has one-piece hull lamination and longitudinal stringers for added backbone, and the hull is built with the trademarked SCRIMP process for improved strength without added weight. It also has a high-density, foam-cored construction for the bottom and topsides, solid fiberglass laminate for the stem and keel, and high-density foam-cored stringers for the power cat’s Cummins diesels. For strength with reduced top weight, Horizon Power Catamarans uses foam-cored reinforcement in the deck and superstructure.”

The 10 Most-Exciting Yacht Debuts at the Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show. 

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.  

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north. 

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests. 

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million. 

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.
