Sail Newport celebrates 40 years of the Newport Regatta this weekend

NEWPORT – In 1983, the U.S. lost the America's Cup, ending the longest-running winning streak in sports history. The loss of the trophy in Newport presented a gloomy forecast of Newport without sailing and the massive event held in Newport for decades. However, a group of proactive community sailors quickly gathered to start Sail Newport, a nonprofit organization, to recruit sailing events to Newport and foster the sport of sailing

Filling the vacancy of sailing events and boosting the economic vitality of Rhode Island became Sail Newport's mission.  The nonprofit organization worked immediately to fill the sailing calendar with local events.  Less than one sailing season later, in 1984, Sail Newport created the first regatta to fill that void.  The "Newport Regatta" was launched as a one-class event with only Shields racing.  That auspicious start was a promising forebearer for rebuilding Newport as the "Sailing Capitol of the world."

This weekend marks the 40th anniversary of the Newport Regatta at Sail Newport, featuring 10 one-design racing classes. The event has grown so successful over the years that sailors from an average of 17 U.S. states and several countries compete.

“Sailors are captivated by sailing in Newport. What sets the Newport Regatta apart in the sailing world is not only racing on the legendary waters of Narragansett Bay, but also the diverse range of boats that participate. From the nimble Melges 15 sailing dinghies to the Classic S Boats to the majestic 12-Metres, the regatta offers a spectacle of speed, skill, and a captivating variety of both classic and modern sailboats," says Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport.

This weekend's classes include 12-Metre, 505, Ensign, F-18, S Class, IC-37, Melges 15, Snipe, Thistle, and VX One. Several classes have sanctioned the Newport Regatta as championships, including the 505 New England Championship, the Ensign Regional Championship, and the Thistle Atlantic Coast Championship.

"The Sail Newport Regatta is a foundation of the summer season in Newport. We always have great racing," says Newport Sailor John Hele, an avid sailor on several classes of boats and IC 37 sailor in the weekend’s Newport Regatta.

The local waters will be a grand spectacle of sailboats as sailors race in four areas on Saturday and Sunday. The race boats will leave from Sail Newport in Fort Adams State Park or from their moorings or slips to racing circles, including offshore of Brenton Point, between Rose and Goat islands, North of the Newport Bridge in the Potters Cove Area, and near Gould Island.

"The Newport Regatta brings the one-design world together, joining classics like the Snipe and Thistle with newer manufacturer classes. Happy 40th anniversary, and thanks to Sail Newport for coordinating the thousands of logistics and moving parts that go into such a great event," says Carol Cronin, of Jamestown, who will compete this weekend in her Snipe Spidey.

The Newport Regatta is a true community-wide effort, with local clubs offering support. Skilled race management volunteers and power boats from these clubs form the backbone of the race committees, demonstrating the collective dedication to making the regatta a success.

The Newport Regatta requires almost 100 volunteers for race management and shoreside activities. Area organizations onboard to assist with operating the Newport Regatta include the Newport Yacht Club, the New York Yacht Club, and the International Yacht & Athletic Club.

Local ties in the line-up of storied boat classes sailing this weekend include the S Class designed by American Naval Architect Nat Herreshoff of Bristol  The boats have stood the test of time as one of the oldest American one-design classes still racing today with an active fleet in Newport.

Also, five of the vaunted 12-Metre Class are racing this weekend and all have a rich local history in the America's Cup.  Courageous , was skippered to victory in 1974 by Ted Hood and in 1977 by Ted Turner.   Intrepid,  also on the roster this weekend, won the America's Cup in Newport in 1967 and 1970.   American Eagle, Nefertiti  and  Columbia  (1958 America’s Cup Winner) round out the entries in the 12-Metre Class.

"The 12 Metres racing this weekend are a nod to history in the Regatta, but they are every bit as competitive and fast as they were in their America's Cup days.  Their participation links the history of sailing in Newport with ou modern sailing community,” Read adds.

In a race for all ages, Commodores Club presents its 88th annual Flight of Newport

Young sailors give it their all to navigate in a Laser class competition during Flight of Newport.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Eighty-three sailboats lined up as close as they could get to the starting line in Newport Harbor Sunday afternoon for the race spectacle known as the Flight of Newport. Soon after, the roughly 90-minute race got underway.

“The Flight of Newport is a great annual community event intertwined with Newport Beach’s rich history and an excellent opportunity to experience race excitement of a regatta where it’s for all experience levels,” said race chairman Lawrence Jones. “It carries with it many fond memories for those that have participated in past regattas.”

The Tera Fleet of the smallest sailboat races competes in Flight of Newport Sunday, July 14.

The Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce presents the race, with the help of the Balboa Yacht Club and several sponsors. Longtime residents may remember that the event, which was introduced in 1936, was first known as the Flight of the Snowbirds and went through several name changes until 2020, when it was renamed Flight of Newport and welcomed ILCA (formerly known as Lasers), Harbor 20 and Terra RS boats.

“We are pleased to continue the tradition for sailors of all ages, ranging from young aspiring skippers to legends of the bay,” said Jones, who has a background in youth programs and a passion for helping young people excel. “What I like to see is that there are representatives in all age groups in this race, and everyone who participated wins during this special event on the water.”

Newport Sea Base Skipper Shaybree Lynette, Taylor Gordon, Shannon Shay, and Nathan Rouget, sail on an H20.

Among the participants Sunday were two first-time registrants who are both sailing instructors that teach at different facilities next door to one another.

Brad Gilreath began teaching sailing in 2022 on small boats at Orange Coast College School of Sailing & Seamanship. “I came into sailing late in life,” said the 50-year-old Gilreath, who hails from Atlanta but moved to Costa Mesa in 2016.

“I started during the pandemic in 2020, which led to an opportunity to be on the America’s Cup team of America Magic, a sailing team representing the New York Yacht Club in the 37th America’s Cup,” he said.

Orange Coast College sailing instructor Brad Gilreath competes in Flight of Newport Sunday on his Laser sailboat.

“All of the good stuff I learned at OCC I was able to apply to the America’s Cup experience, which helped me be a better teacher at OCC,” Gilreath said.

Before the race, Gilreath said he was looking forward to participating as a small boat instructor. “And with the breadth of the age groups in sailboat racing, it’s still going to be fun even if you finish last.”

Shaybree Lynette, 19, is a full-time instructor at Newport Beach Sea Base, where she teaches sailing and coaching to students between the ages of 5 and 17. “There’s a lot of different boats at Sea Base and you teach in all of them,” Lynette said. “With the younger kids I teach on the dinghy sailing boats, like Tera, with a smaller sail.

She said she began her sailing career about nine years ago when she was Sea Base student and became an instructor five years later. Since she was home schooled, she explained, she was able to finish her training and had enough time available to work several hours a week teaching.

Harbor 20 sailboats set off from the starting line Sunday during the Flight of Newport race.

“This is my first time racing with the Harbor 20 boat,” said Lynette. “My crew are all my friends and fellow sailors that I met at Sea Base over eight years ago and we are still friends.”

Winning Entries: The first place winners in each category Sunday were Lin Zhou, Tera Fleet; Erik Hauser, ILCA-Laser; Alex Curtiss (helm) and Campbell Moore (crew), Harbor 20.

Being located in Newport, NYC is in a unique position of having access to some of the best sailing resources in the world to support our mission of providing quality nautical and sailing instruction for the youth of Newport and the surrounding area.

Once again our Marine Adventure Camp will be offered over four(4)  2-week full day sessions  a with a combination of activities unique to meet our mission.

  • Introduction to basic sailing skills in dinghies (Optis, 420s, and Open BICs, and two NEW Zest) and big boats (a J-22, and NYC Member Yachts) to learn concepts like steering, sail positions, and wind awareness.
  • Exposure to beginner marine navigation skills – charts, weather, docking, anchoring
  • A focus on Marine Education – conservation, local geography, and sustainability
  • For Intermediate and Advanced Sailors, including returning MAC Campers, we will be breaking the groups into different levels throughout the camp to differentiate learning and continue to grow their skills

How the american magic team is reimagining america’s cup tech.

Tom Slingsby stays warm and dry with HELLY HANSEN FoilX gear

When it comes to global sporting events that combine history, intrigue, athleticism, talent, technology, legendary personalities, and powerful financiers, few can compete with the America’s Cup . Actually, there’s nothing like the America’s Cup for the simple reason that no other team on earth can boast of a winning streak quite like the New York Yacht Club had when they went undefeated in America’s Cup matches from 1851 until 1983 .

New York Yacht Club exterior, built by Warren & Wetmore, 1899-1901 in Beaux-Arts style, at 37 W. ... [+] 44th Street, midtown, New York, NY

But then again, there’s nothing quite like the New York Yacht Club that maintains two legendary “clubhouses”—one in the heart of New York City on 44th Street, known for its Model Room and extensive nautical library, and Harbour Court in Newport, Rhode Island that annually hosts some of North America’s most prestigious sailing events, including its Annual Regatta, Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex, the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup and the Queen’s Cup.

However, as a sailor and native New Englander who was 15-years old in 1983, I have vivid and heart-breaking memories of Denis Connor and the NYYC losing the Cup to the Australians . But don’t worry! My inner child has recovered (somewhat) since The New York Yacht Club American Magic team is working to finally bring the Cup back to NYC and Newport where it belongs...(lol).

American Magic's AC75 sailing of Barcelona 2024

Every Big Name Urging Biden To Drop Out: Second Senator Goes Public

Rnc day 4: trump describes assassination attempt in gop nomination speech (live updates), the 14 best sheets that make your bed feel extra dreamy.

“We intend to compete in AC37 and are hungry and highly motivated to be the most innovative team on and off the water,” explained Hap Fauth, Principal for American Magic when they announced the team would compete in AC37 that begins in August. “We are proud of how our team rebounded during AC36, but we have unfinished business and are committed to investing in technology, design, innovation, and talent so we are best positioned to bring the America’s Cup home!”

And after getting a glimpse all the cutting-edge-custom-made technology the team has developed to make their hydrofoiling race boat (hull, foils, keels, sails, computer software, pedal-powered hydraulic pumps etc.) faster than the competition, I can say they sure have invested in what Fauth said at the beginning... “the technology, design, innovation, and talent” they need to seriously compete for the Cup. However, I can’t really talk about any of it simply because the America’s Cup is more than just another boat race. It’s also a design and technology arms race that leads teams to be highly secretive as well.

But as I learned in my discussion with team Skipper and President of Sailing Operations Terry Hutchinson , not all the technology that’s being developed for the team is as secret as the shape of the hull, foils, and sails even though the tech contributes to performance. And since four of the eight-man crew of an AC75 is comprised of elite endurance athletes that are responsible for creating the hydraulic power required to trim sails and each lifting keel, this is especially true when it comes to the crew clothing and safety devices.

HELLY HANSEN gear worn by American Magic in AC37

That’s where New York Yacht Club American Magic’s partnership with Helly Hansen comes in. Helly Hansen is a global technical apparel brand that shares American Magic’s commitment to innovation, cutting-edge technology. And the partnership works because America Magic’s top athletes, coaches, designers, R&D, engineers, and support teams have worked closely with Helly Hansen to design and manufacture a wide range of gear that will help the team perform on the water and off.

"Partnering with a brand committed to producing technically excellent garments was essential for the team," said Hutchinson. "The Helly Hansen gear worn during the last America's Cup was constantly put to the test and delivered as a high-performing technical product. At American Magic, we need resilient apparel that can perform consistently at the highest level and in the most challenging conditions on and off the water. We're excited to continue to train and race in Helly Hansen apparel as we focus on our high-performance sailing program and target the 37th America's Cup."

Helly Hansen provides technical gear to the American Magic Americas Cup team

After training at the team's base in the Port of Pensacola, FL, Helly Hansen designers and American Magic crew members exchanged feedback that have led to an entirely new collection of gear. As a result of that feedback, the jackets, pants and vests Helly Hansen developed for the team are more breathable and more stretchy along with being more waterproof too.

Helly Hansen Foil X jacket

Two items were popular with the whole team. The Foil X jacket that combines waterproof breathability with 4-way stretchability. And the HP Racing Quick-Dry T-Shirt that delivers superior quick-dryabilty while also providing 40 SPF sun protection.

The only question now is: Will my 15-year-old self finally be able to celebrate the Cup being back in NYC where it belongs? We’ll just have to tune into 37th America's Cup that’s scheduled to take place in Barcelona from late August through late October to find out.
