The 10 biggest superyachts currently listed for sale

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Want to know how much boat you can buy for your buck? BOAT takes a look at the biggest yachts currently for sale, starting with the iconic 114.5-metre superyacht Pelorus ...

Pelorus | 114.5m

Year: 2003 Builder: Lürssen

Pelorus was commissioned by a Saudi businessman who enjoyed one long, glorious cruise aboard his new superyacht before tycoon Roman Abramovich made him an offer too good to refuse. Easily the largest yacht to be built by Lürssen at the time, her Tim Heywood exterior features a top deck "lido" with two swimming pools, two helicopter pads and a vast, sea-level platform revealed by opening the transom. Interiors were carried out by Terence Disdale , who opted to use natural materials wherever possible to maintain a "casual" atmosphere – in the hopes it would offset the yacht’s imposing frame.

Pelorus is asking €185,000,000 with Burgess .

Moonlight II | 91.4m

Year: 2005 Builder: Neorion

The brainchild of the late Andreas Liveras, Moonchild II was originally commissioned as the 85.3-metre Alysia alongside sistership Annaliesse (now Queen Miri ). Her transformative 2015 refit added the extra 6.1 metres alongside a brand new beach club made complete with a well-stocked bar, sunbathing areas and shell doors that reveal far-flung ocean views. Other highlights include a touch-and-go helipad and a full-beam spa with massage room, beauty salon, steam shower and gym.

Moonlight II is asking €68,000,000 with Fraser .

Phoenix II | 90.1m

Year: 2010 Builder: Lürssen

Phoenix II  takes a page (or two) from The Great Gatsby with her cherry velvet flooring and gilded details. The owner commissioned Winch Design to create her intricate "Art Deco meets the New York skyline" design concept, including a 5.7-metre phoenix figurehead modelled after the Chrysler building's mounted eagles. Roaring highlights include a sommelier room, three swimming pools, a plush cinema room and a custom Steinway for some musical accompaniment at mealtimes.

Phoenix II is asking €124,950,000 with   Cecil Wright and Burgess .

Lady Lara | 91m

Year: 2015 Builder: Lürssen

Debuting on the brokerage market in September 2023, Lady Lara has eluded the public eye for eight years – with BOAT International only recently stepping on board . She was designed inside and out by Reymond Langton and features two standout swimming pools . The first transforms into a dance floor with surround-sound while the second is fitted with a swim-up bar, large day bed and sunlounger. Lady Lara 's recently-completed winter works were valued at a staggering €15,000,000.

Lady Lara is asking €230,000,000 with Y.CO and Merle Wood & Associates .

Year: 2009 Builder: Abeking & Rasmussen

Another Reymond Langton entry, B2 remains the second-largest launch by the German shipyard (beaten out by the 118.2-metre Livao ). Her recent four-million-euro refit saw the hull extended by seven metres – allowing room for a spacious beach club, with a glass-bottom infinity pool acting as its rippling, refracted ceiling. The beach club is also outfitted with lounge chairs, a drinks bar and flatscreen television.

B2 is asking €79,000,000 with Moravia Yachting .

Chakra | 86m

Year: 1963 Builder: Van Der Werf

Delivered first as a commercial vessel, Chakra was converted into a full-fledged superyacht in 1998 by Devonport Yachts . The change saw her five decks rearranged with a dedicated yoga area, spa pool, beauty parlor, massage room and gym. This unconventional yacht also boasts a globe-trotting range (in exces of 10,000 nautical miles) and a spacious tender garage housing Yamaha Wave Runners, two RIBs and a 12-metre Sessa dayboat.

Chakra is listed for sale with Merle Wood & Associates, with POA.

O'Ptasia | 84.7m

Year: 2018 Builder: Golden Yachts

Superseded by 95-metre sistership O'Pari in 2020, Golden Yachts' former flagship is still one of the largest yachts on the market today. Her most attention-pulling feature is the beach club spa, fitted with a steam room, dry Finnish sauna, Hammam and massage room. Continuing the theme of wellness, a touch-and-go helipad on the foredeck can double as a yoga studio (with a view like no other) while her waterfall Jacuzzi is also a rejuvenating spot.

O'Ptasia is asking €89,999,000.00 with Burgess.

Elements | 80m

Year: 2019 Builder: Yachtley

The newest delivery on the list, Elements is Alpha Marine -made and "one of the world’s few purpose-built SOLAS yachts" according to her broker. Worthy of note is the master cabin, complete with its own oval lobby that doubles as a walk-in closet and a private deck with helipad, swimming pool, Jacuzzi and small private dining table. Her opulent Cristiano Gatto interiors see unconventional features (think Grecian-style pillars and etched-mirrored glass) incorporated alongside gold, silver and mother of pearl inlays.

Elements is asking €112,000,000 with Camper & Nicholsons .

Amaryllis | 78.4m

Year: 2011 Builder: Abeking & Rasmussen

Inspired by the Belle Époque, Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, it's no wonder Amaryllis'   interiors (owed to Reymond Langton) always dazzle those who step aboard. Leisure highlights include a piano lounge, cinema suite and five-metre pool with colourful underwater lighting for night-time swims. Her waterside set-up also impresses, with a beach club that features a fully-equipped (and perfectly paired) gym and spa.

Amaryllis is asking €89,000,000 with Moravia Yachting.

Yersin | 76.6m

Year: 2015 Builder: Piriou

Designed by Pierre-Jacques Kubis in the same scientific spirit as her namesake , Yersin is equipped with a barge, seaplane and enough provisions to keep 18 people fed for 50 days. But this military-style explorer is built not just for getting to extraordinary places, but also for making the most of them once there. Guests have free reign over a 30-square-metre spa, cinema and a pool deck complete with a teppanyaki galley, sushi bar and a large swimming pool. Other highlights include a library and an elevator accessing all decks.

Yersin is asking €59,000,000 with Fraser.

How To Buy a Luxury Yacht: An Expert Guide

Posted December 3, 2021 in Brokerage & New Build by Ashleigh King

Owning a luxury superyacht is a dream of many. And that dream becomes a reality with the help of a luxury yacht brokerage and an experienced broker. David Seal , of the famed Yachts for Sale YouTube channel, sat down with Northrop & Johnson CCO Cromwell Littlejohn to answer the most common questions about purchasing a yacht and to map out a complete buyer’s guide for potential yacht owners.

Size, style and builder

When shopping for a yacht, one of the bests parts is the seemingly countless options of sizes, styles, and builders. The possibilities are endless, from classic motor yachts to ultra-modern superyachts, stunning sailing yachts to global explorers and beyond. If you’re contemplating a yacht purchase, keep in mind the following questions:

  • How will you use the boat? (get VERY realistic here)
  • Are you looking for a new or pre-owned yacht?
  • Custom built, semi-custom or production?
  • Are you looking for a high-speed performance boat or one with extended cruising capabilities?
  • What size range would you like to stay in?
  • What price range would you like to stay in?
  • Do you have intentions to put your yacht on the charter market?

Once you have an idea of what you’re looking for, the next step is working with a dedicated broker to make your dreams come true.

Your broker is your new best friend

At N&J, our team of well-rounded brokers has the skills and the passion for finding you your perfect yacht.

“The process of buying a brokerage yacht is pretty straightforward, the devil is in the details,” states Seal.

“Having that information and guidance from an experienced, knowledgeable broker is key,” Littlejohn assures.

Your broker will compile a list of yachts on the market – and perhaps include options not publicly known to be available that best meet your search criteria, such as styling, number of staterooms, amenities and budget.

Let’s negotiate

Once you and your broker have selected the perfect yacht, the next step is negotiation, presenting offers, sea trials and surveys. Your Northrop & Johnson broker will walk you through all the necessary steps and prepare you for what to expect during this process.

Seal asks, “Do you recommend people try a cheeky offer first, a very low-ball offer?”

“I think we’re always trying to get the boat at the best price we can for our clients. What we don’t want to do is come in so low that we insult somebody and then find that they no longer wish to negotiate with us…we’ll do all the necessary market research and find data that provides us with a well-rounded understanding of the boat’s true value on the market. This way, we can get in and out of it properly, and from there we’ll advise and see where we end up” replies Littlejohn.

“Let’s say the offer is accepted; where do we go from there?” says Seal.

Littlejohn says, “If we back up a bit, we can get to how we present that offer. To present the offer, we need to put it in writing on the best contract to use, then there are some dates we have to concern ourselves with; these also need to be added to the contract. These include acceptance/rejection dates, closing dates, etc… We put the number down [with] any additional terms we may be considering such as sea trials and surveys and such, and then from there we put the agreement together; we need to be prepared to back that up with a 10% deposit based on the selling price that we’re offering.”

What happens next?

Your N&J broker will assist in scheduling a buyer’s sea trial and condition survey. This is to essentially “test drive” the yacht and have the opportunity to identify any deficiencies or discrepancies, whether that be mechanically or aesthetically.

Littlejohn states, “There may be further negotiations post-survey based on the findings. This may allow us to get the owner or the seller to fix items or give us a monetary credit for those items that we can fix once we own the boat.”

“That’s a really important point for [those] who have not bought a yacht before or are thinking of buying a yacht,” states Seal. “…this is not like buying a used car where you take it off the lot, and it’s your problem after that- you do your sea trial and survey and let’s say for example that I’ve offered $4,00,000 on a yacht, and you take it out to sea and the stabilizers don’t work-it’s not a take it or leave it situation is it?”

Littlejohn replies, “…we may go back to that seller and ask them to fix that and repair it, and in most cases, we’ll make those repairs subject to our surveyor’s review of the repairs and confirmation that they were done in a proper and “yacht-like” fashion, or we may come back and say we think it’s going to cost us this much and we’d like to re-negotiate the agreement to that extent.”

Once a final agreement has been made post sea trial and survey, the necessary documents will be exchanged. There are a few other factors to consider before the payment is made and the sale is completed.

“We’re now getting to acceptance day. The buyer will have to register the yacht. How easy is that, and, as a brokerage company, how involved does N&J get with that side of things?” asks Seal.

“Most of the brokers, especially those at N&J, are familiar with the requirements, the benefits and the downfalls of the different flag states. Each flag state has its own set of rules, which sometimes go as far as licensing requirements for crew, how many crew you have to be (safe manning requirements). As such there are several choices when it comes to flag states. Knowledgeable brokers have upfront conversations with their buyers about all of these aspects of yacht registration,” answers Littlejohn.

Some new yacht buyers may feel they can navigate the waters of yacht purchase on their own, but factors like where to register a new yacht really showcase the importance of having an experienced broker in your corner who can guide you in the right direction for your needs. Once all the technicalities are sorted out, the payment is submitted and the deal closed. But much like taking home an infant from the hospital, there is no “handbook” on yacht ownership. This is another reason working with an experienced broker is advantageous. Your broker will advise you on all things concerning yacht ownership. From documentation and insurance to crew and charter marketing, your broker will guide you on how to best manage your new vessel.

A common question answered

One of the most common questions regarding yacht purchase: “What’s it all about when you see an advert on a yacht, and it says “Not for sale or charter to U.S. residents while in U.S. waters?” asks Seal.

“That’s a law that goes back hundreds of years in U.S. history, and it disallows the ability to offer boats for sales or charter to U.S. residents if the boat is foreign-built or foreign-flagged and has not been imported into the United States. There are a few different ways to navigate this restriction. One is to have the seller move the yacht to a free trade zone (FTZ). This is a new option that only came about within the last three or so years. Another way for US buyers to purchase foreign-built or foreign-flagged yachts is to purchase them at a boat show under a boat-show bond or to close the deal on the yacht offshore in international waters or a country close to the US. In many cases, before free trade zones, buyers and sellers would cruise the yacht from the US to The Bahamas for the buyer to inspect and purchase the yacht legally.” answers Littlejohn.

“We’re actually in a free trade zone here (in Fort Lauderdale at the Northrop & Johnson office); what’s the benefit of that to Northrop & Johnson?” asks Seal.

“It gives us the ability to sit boats right outside of our office and offer them for sale to U.S. residents while in the free trade zone. It makes the whole process much easier for both the seller and the potential buyer as he or she can come to the N&J office and inspect or purchase the yacht with ease,” states Littlejohn.

Northrop & Johnson’s industry-leading knowledgeable yacht brokers have decades of experience in both yacht sales and purchase. They have access to the world’s most advanced yachting tech tools and databases, ensuring they have their fingers on the pulse of the industry. Jefferies CEO sold $65 million in stock to buy a yacht from a client

  • Jefferies CEO Rich Handler sold $65 million in company stock to buy a luxury yacht.
  • He's said to be buying a Westport 164 from his friend Tilman Fertitta, a Jefferies client.
  • Handler said on Wednesday that he wasn't planning any more stock sales.

Insider Today

Jefferies CEO Rich Handler sold $65 million of his stock in the company to buy himself a gift — a luxury yacht.

Handler sold 1.5 million shares , or 7% of his holdings, to purchase a "personal boat and to pay tax obligations," the investment bank said in a Wednesday statement.

"My sale of shares today was a gift to myself and my family, and I do not intend to sell any further shares," Handler said in the statement. "I remain extremely bullish on Jefferies."

Related stories

A source told the Financial Times the boat was a Westport 164 yacht and was being purchased from Handler's longtime friend Tilman Fertitta, a Jefferies client.

Fertitta is the billionaire CEO of the hospitality company Landry's and owns the Houston Rockets, an NBA team. The two men jointly own Landcadia Holdings, a blank-check company.

Jefferies said in the statement that Handler, who's been with the bank since 1990, had received about 70% of his pay in the form of company shares. The bank said he'd previously sold shares only for tax purposes and charity.

Jefferies didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Investors often view executives' stock sales as signaling a lack of company confidence, so any sales are carefully messaged.

In October, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said he would sell 1 million of his 8.6 million shares, his first sale since becoming CEO in 2006. The filing announcing the planned sale said that Dimon chose to sell the stocks "for financial diversification and tax-planning purposes" and that he "continues to believe the company's prospects are very strong."

Dimon sold the first of the sets of shares in February for $150 million and sold the remainder earlier this month, pocketing $183 million in total proceeds.

'Access to hidden-gem ports': Why this luxury yacht is the best option for beach lovers

“This is your yacht, to do with as you please,” Captain Rob O’Leary told guests of the Emerald Sakara , the second luxury superyacht from Emerald Cruises. “We have an international crew from 21 different nations, and we are all here for you.”

I was on the maiden voyage of the 360-foot Sakara, a December 2023 sailing with the added glamor of a Champagne christening in San Juan, Puerto Rico, led by the ship’s godmother, Kelly Craighead. She is president of Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade organization.

“Sakara” is a Sanskrit word meaning “thoughts become things” – a fitting name, given the thought that went into the ship’s chic design. And our itinerary for the week couldn’t be more yacht-like – an island-hopping experience in the West Indies, stopping in out-of-the-way ports that larger cruise ships can’t manage. And while some smaller boats can feel rocky, the Sakara’s stabilizers keep the ship on an even keel.

Are luxury cruise ships worth the money? We did the math for Silversea's Silver Nova.

With just 100 guests and 76 crew, the Sakara is part of the larger trend in cruising: smaller ships that cater to vacationers who want the style and feel of a yacht, and the intimate service that accompanies that, with the amenities of a larger ship. Craighead said small-ship cruises offer “luxury at a great value, access to hidden-gem ports and unique features like marinas for water activities directly off the ship. These small ships can even be chartered for your own amazing, private yacht experience.”

After departing from San Juan, the Sakara reached the Puerto Rican island of Culebra in a few hours, just 20 miles off the coast. We hopped in a taxi van at the port to reach the pristine waters of Flamenco Beach, which consistently makes the world’s top 10 lists. It was a fall-asleep-on-the-sand kind of day, under brightly colored umbrellas, with multiple trips to the canteen for french fries.

“I hope you enjoyed Culebra today because it’s quite hard to get in, through a very narrow channel,” O’Leary said at a supper-hour briefing.

The next day, we stopped at the nearby island of Vieques, which is filled with wild horses – about 2,000 of them – most of which are fully accustomed to the photo op. We docked at Esperanza Bay and wandered the waterfront. Jeeps or ATVs were available to rent for those who wanted to beach-hop, but we settled into the sand at Sun Bay. And when we sailed into Cruz Bay on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. John the next day, there were yachts and catamarans everywhere – and the Sakara fit right in.

The crew outdid itself the next day at White Bay Beach on Jost Van Dyke, the smallest of the British Virgin Islands. A barbecue feast awaited us, along with beach loungers, steel drum entertainment, and all the paddles and water toys from the ship. Later, we wandered down the beach to find a young yacht crowd, groups of friends who have rented their boats, all knee-deep in their mojitos.

“I get a real kick out of driving the Emerald Sakara into St. Barths, muscling in and anchoring next to all the other superyachts,” O’Leary said. “It looks good in the pictures.” A stop there brought a snorkeling excursion, a bit of high-end shopping and a few rosé-soaked hours on Plage de Saline.

Back on board, the creature comforts of the Sakara included plenty of outdoor space to connect with the ocean, a small infinity pool, a full-service spa and a large, elegant dining room and terrace. It’s all part of the cushy yacht lifestyle.

The ship will spend the summer and fall cruising the Mediterranean Sea – heading for the French and Italian rivieras, Croatia and Greece – with eight-day itineraries from $5,100. The Emerald Sakara will be back in the Caribbean next December, with eight-day cruises starting at $4,100.

The Ultimate Guide on How to Buy a Used Boat

B uying a boat is a path toward fun in the sun and outdoor adventure with friends and family. Over 140 million people worldwide enjoy spending time on the water on all types of boats, and you can join their ranks by shopping for your favorite boat styles near you. The first step toward enjoying the benefits of boating starts with learning how to buy a used boat.

Used boats provide the same freedom and fun at a much lower price. You’ll enjoy a lower barrier to entry to get out on the water and meet up with friends on those sunny summer afternoons.

The good news is that you’ve found the perfect guide to take you through buying a used boat. Continue reading to start shopping for vessels you love today!

Set a Budget

Setting a budget is essential when shopping for used boats near you. Boats are expensive assets, and it’s easy to get carried away by more expensive options providing impressive amenities and luxuries.

Your budget should cover boat insurance, the cost of maintenance and repairs, and the delivery fee. These charges add up and can quickly take your favorite types of boats outside your budget. Create a firm price and stick with it when shopping for different types of boats.

Determine Your Needs

Different types of boats provide various benefits and experiences when out on the water. It’s critical to determine which type of boater you are. If you crave speed, a sailboat is going to be a disappointment.

Consider fishing boats to hit deeper water and try your luck for rare and delicious fish in the ocean. A sailboat is perfect for a leisurely experience with friends and family on the water. It’s also worthwhile to consider the bodies of water you’ll use your boat on.

Check the Canvas

The canvas on the boat is one of the first things to check when exploring your options. Most boats come equipped with a canvas package to provide shade and comfort for occupants. Don’t trust the previous owner or dealer when they claim the canvas is in “like new” condition.

Unfurl the canvas and check its condition to determine if it needs repairs or replacement. Check the snaps and look through the clear vinyl windows on the boat to ensure they’re in top-notch condition. It’s best to ensure you get fair value for your hard-earned money when buying a boat.

Look for Red Flags

There are several red flags when checking out your favorite boats for sale in your area. These red flags include signs of past damage and future problems that will cost you more money in maintenance. Ignoring these signs could result in significant expenses and a frustrating ownership experience for yourself and your family.

The first place to check when inspecting a boat you want to purchase is the bellows. The bellows look like an accordion, and they’re designed to protect the boat’s control cables and other sensitive parts. Damage to the bellows is a bad sign that you’ll need to spend more money to fix the boat before making it seaworthy.

It’s also wise to check the boat’s hull for cracks and other signs of damage. A cracked hull could result in significant water damage and worse if left unrepaired. A crack is a sign that the boat has been in a crash and a sign you should get uninsured boater coverage .

The engine and steering are other components to look closely at before buying a boat. Have the boat’s owner start the engine and let it run to listen for signs of damage or wear and tear on the moving parts. Smoke is another indicator that the engine needs service or repairs.

Check the steering wheel to ensure it’s responsive to the rudder. Driving a boat with unresponsive steering is dangerous for you, your passengers, and other boaters.

Get a Marine Survey

A marine survey is similar to having a mechanic inspect a vehicle you’re interested in buying. It’s an excellent way to enjoy peace of mind when learning how to buy a used boat. The mechanic will give you a clear breakdown of what the boat has been through and any maintenance issues to expect while owning the boat.

The surveyor will likely charge based on the size of the boat styles you’re considering. It’s a good rule of thumb to pay between $20 and $25 per foot for the boat you’re having inspected. The inspection includes an out-of-water check, survey report, and sea trial test.

It’s an additional cost that could save you thousands of dollars when learning how to buy a used boat. Eliminate risk and find the best vessel to provide the benefits of boating to your family.

Negotiate a Deal

Negotiating is a challenging aspect of buying a boat, but getting the best deal is essential. Use your knowledge of the boat’s condition and any necessary repairs to work toward a lower price. You can proceed confidently when you know the price of similar boat styles and conditions.

Knowing the market equips you with everything you’ll need for a straightforward negotiation process. Don’t lose hope if you find a boat you love that needs some TLC. Use that knowledge to get a lower price and the boat your heart desires.

Protect Your Investment

When learning how to buy a used boat, the last step is to protect your investment with boat insurance coverage. Insurance will help you repair your boat if you’re involved in an accident. It’s also wise to consider the warranty coverage on your new asset to save money on repairs and maintenance.

Now You Know How to Buy a Used Boat

Learning how to buy a used boat is an intensive process, but there are several steps to take for peace of mind when finding the perfect vessel for your family. Determine your ideal boating experience, and shop for the types of boats that fit that description.

Pay for a marine survey for peace of mind, and check troublesome areas for red flags before buying. Use your market knowledge to negotiate a fair price when buying a boat.

Making a significant purchase can be stressful without the best guidance. Check out our Finance blog content to help your money go further today!
