The Migaloo M5 Submersible Superyacht under water

As impressive as all that may read, we’re only scratching the surface. Migaloo is billing the M5 as the world’s first luxury submersible superyacht. The Graz-based firm promises it will go all out to deliver the sort of amenities its ultra-ultra-rich clientele expect. It intends to work with customers to design the interior of their dreams, but they can expect an opulent dining room with room for 36 guests and panoramic glass walls, a curated wine cellar, and a technologically advanced cinema. There will also be two swimming pools, a jacuzzi and—because this is a superyacht we’re talking about—a helipad.

When the M5 is surfaced, there is also a healthy stable of water toys for the owner and their guests to enjoy. These include five Sea-Doo Jet-Skis, Seabobs, Zapata Racing flyboards and hoverboards, and everything else you need for paddleboarding, kitesurfing, and kayaking. There are also two custom Midget-Submarines, two submersibles, and several ROVs and UUVs. There’s little risk of getting bored onboard the M5.

Migaloo: The $2 Billion Superyacht Submarine

2 billion dollar yacht submarine

Migaloo , an Austrian enterprise, has introduced a pioneering concept in hybrid diesel/electric submarine yachts, under the banner of Migaloo Private Submersible Yachts.

In January 2024, Migaloo revealed its latest innovation, the Migaloo M5, a 165.8-meter submersible superyacht.

Engineered for both tropical and arctic environments, the Migaloo M5 boasts the capability to submerge to a depth of 250 meters for approximately four weeks.

Christian Gumpold, CEO of Migaloo, expressed his belief in the burgeoning category of submersible superyachts, stating, “In addition to motor yachts and sailboats, I believe submersible superyachts will become an additional category of private vessels for owners to choose from.”

That’s Baller: The World’s Priciest $3 Billion Luxury Super Submarine Unveiled

The Migaloo M5 is a luxury super submarine designed in Austria , offering a blend of super yacht luxury and submarine stealth.

It promises unprecedented security and secluded exploration with four-week underwater voyages.

As per Air Mail , the Migaloo M5 is an impressive 541 feet long submersible, accommodating 20 passengers and 40 crew members, capable of diving to 250 and meters.

It offers various entertainment options like jet skiing, kite surfing, paddle boarding, exploring with mini-submarines, and even helicopter rides.

Enhancing its appeal, the Migaloo M5 includes two pools, a jacuzzi, and a cafe. Culinary delights await in the 36-seat dining room with glass walls offering stunning sea views. For an additional cost, optional extras include a wine cellar or cinema.

The Migaloo M5’s construction is expected to cost about AUD $3 billion, not including the extra optional choices.

According to reports, CEO Christian Gumpold has struggled to sell the Migaloo M5 due to safety concerns, especially following the Titan submersible tragedy in June last year.

Acknowledging this challenge, Gumpold stated that the company is aiming for “visionary billionaires with or without existing superyacht experience who have extraordinary demands for exclusivity, safety, adventure.”

He further added that Migaloo is “in negotiations with a number of interested parties from all over the world who are motivated to own the world’s first superyacht-submarine hybrid.”

“As it is a completely new development, such a project will require corresponding monetary resources, take a lot of time for design, construction and building and demand many decisions,” said Gumpold.

“However, the owner also receives the corresponding prestige and unimagined new possibilities when calling this product his own. Our target group must be aware of this and have the corresponding innovative mindset.”

According to Gumpold, Migaloo is confident in the security of the Migaloo M5, citing a double-hull design and multiple rescue systems, including mini-submarines, for maximum protection.

Migaloo is the famous albino humpback that is occasionally spotted passing through Byron Bay, but Migaloo is also a design and superyacht company that boasts of offering  “private submersible superyachts, innovative superyachts & floating islands [that] are the world’s most exclusive products.”

2 billion dollar yacht submarine

Migaloo, founded by Austrian Christian Gumpold, claims to be the future of luxury yachting and, perhaps more to the point, of being able to offer the world’s multi-millionaires and billionaires that ever-elusive sense of privacy they must feel their superyachts can no longer deliver. In reality, Migaloo offers concepts, ideas, renders and, as of recently, NFTs. Vaporware, you might call it.

Be that as it may, one thing you can’t fault Migaloo for is the ability to dream big. Really big. As big as the Migaloo M7 private submersible superyacht introduced a few years ago, which remains the world’s largest (submersible) superyacht design and the most expensive privately-owned asset. Both honors are still on paper, so here’s to hoping you’re in the mood for an outrageous (rich person’s) dream.

2 billion dollar yacht submarine

Just so we’re clear, not a single submersible superyacht from the M-Series from Migaloo exists beyond the digital realm. The closest you can come to owning any of the various-size superyachts that are also submarines is if you buy an NFT (non-fungible token) of it. You’d still not be able to go anywhere with it, it goes without saying.

The M7 is the biggest and fanciest in the series, a 283-meter (930-foot) monster of a vessel that’s meant to offer the best of everything. It’s can travel at a speed of 32 knots (36.8 mph / 60 kph) when on the surface, or a brisk 21 knots (24 mph / 39 kph) underwater. It can go as deep as 457 meters (1,500 feet), and has a design inspired by modern Zumwalt-class destroyers, but infused with the classic styling of modern superyachts.

Designed for the billionaire for whom a multi-million megayacht is too basic and for whom the desire for privacy trumps even financial common sense, the M7 offers accommodation for 12 guests across eight VIP suites, and a crew of 25 in separate quarters. The owner’s suite sits on a private deck and offers a total of 2,100 square meters (22,604 square feet) of living area, appointed luxuriously.

2 billion dollar yacht submarine

Amenities on board include spa and wellness area, fully-equipped gym, cinema, dining rooms, bars, lounges and underwater viewing rooms, as well as a helicopter hangar, jacuzzis and pool, and an entire hoard of water and underwater toys packed inside six dry hangars. This is very much a cliché, but as far as amenities go, if you can think it, it’s on board the M7. Moreover, the owner gets the final say in terms of design, features and the final layout, so that the resulting vessel will be truly a one-off.

“Owners are looking for privacy, security and protection for themselves, their guests and their valuables, or for the fulfillment of unique experiences up to scientific desires as well as for the greatest possible exclusivity and limitation,”  Gumpold says. It should come in an exclusive package.

When sailing above the water surface, the M7 acts very much like a megayacht, opening up to offer alfresco entertainment areas and quick access to water. The vessel shutters for underwater mode, with the hull built to U.S. Navy SUBSAFE safety standards. Speaking of safety, Gumpold told  Bloomberg  back in 2017 that every safety feature imaginable would be included. This apparently includes 12 surface-to-air missiles and 12 MU90 antitorpedo – we live in very dangerous times. Propulsion would be hybrid diesel-electric.

An Austrian company is developing a huge, submersible luxury superyacht that can stay under water for four weeks — but it’ll set you back $3 billion.

The Migaloo M5, developed by Migaloo, will be a 541-foot-long submersible that can hold 20 passengers and 40 crew members and dive to a depth of 250 metres, per Air Mail .

It comes with two six-person mini submarines for more underwater adventures, as well as a helipad and room for jet skis.

The 36-seat dining room has glass walls to watch the sea life drift by and optional extras like a swimming pool, wine cellar or cinema can be added.

The Migaloo M5 will cost $3 billion to build. Picture: Migaloo.

But the luxury vessel will cost interested buyers about A$3 billion to build, and that’s without the extras.

Migaloo CEO and founder Christian Gumpold said the company’s target market was “visionary billionaires with or without existing superyacht experience who have extraordinary demands for exclusivity, safety, adventure”.

Mr Gumpold has been touting the idea of luxury submersibles as the “future of yachting” for the past decade, but so far hasn’t had any takers.

This time, though, he said Migaloo was “in negotiations with a number of interested parties from all over the world who are motivated to own the world’s first superyacht-submarine hybrid.”

The dining room has glass walls to watch the ocean. Picture: Migaloo.

“As it is a completely new development, such a project will require corresponding monetary resources, take a lot of time for design, construction and building and demand many decisions,” he told The Times .

“However, the owner also receives the corresponding prestige and unimagined new possibilities when calling this product his own. Our target group must be aware of this and have the corresponding innovative mindset.”

It’s being called a world first. Picture: Migaloo.

Migaloo M5’s safety features will likely be under scrutiny after the Titan sub imploded at 3500 metres below sea level with billionaires on board last year.

Migaloo is confident its vessel is safe, promising maximum protection with a double-hull construction and a range of rescue systems including the mini submarines.

The Migaloo M5 is just the latest in the company’s long list of wild offerings.

Migaloo also says it can build the Kokomo Ailand, a 117-metre “floating habitat” (like a man-made island) complete with palm trees, waterfalls and a shark feeding station.

Luxurylaunches -

This $2 billion personal submarine is so huge that it can dwarf a megayacht. The vessel is almost three times longer than a football field, it has lavish VIP suites, a helipad and even an open deck swimming pool.

2 billion dollar yacht submarine

Superyachts that cost millions guarantee you three things- status symbol, privacy, and luxuries. These are aspects very dear to billionaires and oligarchs around the world. Privacy especially is paramount, with most not listing their names as the owner of their prized possession. They don’t shy away from going a step ahead and deploying sonic weapons that emit pain rays, zap drones mid-air, and even rely on lie-detector tests. Some are equipped with pirate-proof passageways, a radar-based anti-missile system, bulletproof windows, etc. Roman Abramovich’s $590 million megayacht Eclipse boasts an onboard anti-missile defense system, a futuristic laser shield, an escape pod, a submarine , and three helicopters. If this sounds like a lot, the easier way out is to ditch the entire idea and take all the fanciness and frills under the sea.

Why stay afloat in a multi-million chunk of burnished driftwood and still be left with nuisances when you can opt for Migaloo submarines and remain submerged both at anchor and when cruising between destinations? A concept for now, Austria-based Migaloo submarines will design, engineer, and build private yachts that will dive to 1,500 feet and cruise underwater at 20 knots. The most exorbitant and exciting of the submersible superyachts is the 928-foot-long M7. M7 will be fitted with eight VIP suites, alfresco dining, and a swimming pool on the deck. What billionaires will be left with is an impressive multi-story, yacht that includes every amenity found on a floating megayacht like a helipad, stately suites, and unmatched privacy unless the owners have a problem with fish.

This is the world's first submersible superyacht worth $2bn and it can remain underwater for weeks

The news all James Bond fans have been waiting to hear.

You can now explore the depths of the ocean in luxury – you just need a couple of billion dollars to do so.

Migaloo claims to be revolutionizing the world of superyachts with their very own, world’s first submersible superyacht.

READ MORE! BMW ‘The Icon’ is the world’s first all-glass flying yacht

The boat company’s gigantic 928-foot (282-meter) vessel has a helipad for its on-board helicopter, as well as a swimming pool, movie theater, wine cellar, library and much more.

For comparison, the Star Wars-inspired superyacht seems tiny at ‘just’ 442 feet.

It also dwarfs the British Royal Navy’s leading submarine, HMS Astute, at 318 feet.

This is the world's first submersible superyacht worth $2bn and it can remain underwater for weeks

Although the submersible superyacht isn’t allowed to carry weapons, it’s capable of almost everything else its naval counterpart can do.

According to Migaloo, its submarine – which can cruise at a speed of 40 knots (74 km/h) when submerged – is faster than the Royal Navy’s pride and joy, which travels at a mere 30 knots (55 km/h).

What’s more, the company claims its super sub can also dive to 1,500 feet (457 meters) and is capable of staying there for several weeks at a time.

HMS Astute can only reach a depth of 984 feet (299 meters).

This is the world's first submersible superyacht worth $2bn and it can remain underwater for weeks

The submersible superyacht also has room on-board for several jet-skis, two 52-feet (15-meter) long, six person mini-submarines; and multiple under-water viewing rooms.

Of course, it features a luxury interior, including a 36-seat dining room with glass walls for guests to take in the views as they eat.

It also boasts an impressive 6,889-square-foot private living quarters for the owner, as well as 3,280-square-feet of reception areas and 1,312-square-feet of guest accommodation.

This is the world's first submersible superyacht worth $2bn and it can remain underwater for weeks

Christian Gumpold, founder and CEO of Migaloo, revealed the submersible superyacht could cost upwards of $2 billion.

“We think a private submarine will be the most exclusive and most expensive thing a person can own,” he told The Sun Online .

“We are the only company worldwide which offer superyacht-sized private submarines.”

Gumpold said that superyacht owners are increasingly “getting younger” and “they wanted even more extra ordinary and individual designs”.

“They are willing to have something really new and unique, which has never been designed or constructed before – a ‘normal’ surface yacht is not that interesting for them – a private submarine is,” he said.

Now where’s my checkbook??

Meta Seeks Dismissal of FTC’s Antitrust Lawsuit Over Instagram, WhatsApp Deals, Claiming It ‘Faces Fierce Competition From a Range of Platforms’

Meta headquarters

Meta filed a motion Friday requesting the dismissal of the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust lawsuit against the social media company — arguing the agency still hasn’t provided any basis for its litigation, which could potentially force Meta to divest Instagram and WhatsApp.

The FTC’s suit seeks potential remedies including requiring Meta to divest or restructure its businesses, “including, but not limited to, Instagram and/or WhatsApp,” in a way that would “restore the competition that would exist” in the absence of the alleged anticompetitive conduct.

In a statement announcing Meta’s motion to dismiss, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, chief legal officer Jennifer Newstead said, “The evidence shows exactly what we said it would: Meta faces fierce competition from a range of platforms — from TikTok and X to YouTube and Snapchat. Further, Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp, which regulators reviewed and cleared more than a decade ago, have benefited consumers. Through billions of dollars and millions of hours of investment, we’ve made the apps better, more reliable and more secure.”

Facebook in 2012 paid $1 billion to acquire Instagram, and in 2014 it inked a $19 billion deal for mobile messaging app WhatsApp. (The company changed its corporate name to Meta Platforms Inc. in October 2021.)

“The FTC reviewed both acquisitions years ago and allowed them to close,” Newstead said in the statement. “The decision to revisit done deals is tantamount to announcing that no sale will ever be final. This lawsuit not only sows doubt and uncertainty about the U.S. government’s merger review process and whether acquiring businesses can actually rely on the outcomes of the regulatory review process, but it will also make companies think twice about investing in innovation, since they may be punished if that innovation leads to success.”

Newstead’s statement continued, “Put simply, antitrust laws are supposed to promote competition and protect consumers, not punish companies for innovating to give people greater value and choice. We will continue to vigorously defend our company and the ability of people and businesses to choose the great products we offer.”

The case is one of several legal actions the U.S. government has pursued against Big Tech companies. Most recently, last month the Justice Department filed an antitrust suit against Apple , alleging the tech company has perpetuated a monopoly with the iPhone. The  FTC sued Amazon  on antitrust grounds last fall, and the DOJ last year filed an antitrust  lawsuit against Google alleging the internet company has a “monopolistic grip” on the digital advertising market.

Why artificial submarine curtains won't save West Antarctica's retreating glaciers

by Alanna Alevropoulos-Borrill and Nick Golledge, The Conversation

Why artificial submarine curtains won’t save West Antarctica’s retreating glaciers

Some researchers have recently proposed the construction of artificial structures— submarine curtains or walls —to stop the warming ocean from getting to the most rapidly melting glaciers in West Antarctica.

If effective, these interventions could save trillions of dollars in avoided coastal impacts.

But such a large-scale operation in one of the most inaccessible places on Earth is estimated to cost US$50 billion–100 billion to build and another US$1 billion a year to maintain . It could also have negative impacts on the rest of the ice sheet and marine life in the Southern Ocean.

Our new study , published in Communications Earth & Environment , weighs up whether these kinds of experiments are worthwhile.

We explore the conditions required to stop runaway glacial retreat in the Amundsen Sea Embayment, the sector of West Antarctica currently losing most ice. We find that blocking warm water from the embayment may not be enough to prevent ongoing sea-level rise from the region.

Investigating the fate of West Antarctica

The future of the Antarctic ice sheet is the greatest uncertainty in projections of global sea-level rise over the coming century. During the past 25 years, the ice sheet has already contributed 7.6mm to global sea-level rise and the rate of mass loss is accelerating.

Much of this increase is due to a warm ocean current that floods into deep basins close to parts of West Antarctica. It melts the parts of the ice sheet that flow into the ocean.

This warm water drives some of the highest rates of ice-shelf melting seen on the continent and is causing the ice to thin and retreat rapidly. Recent research suggests this retreat is now unavoidable.

Satellite observations have shown extensive thinning and retreat of glaciers in this region. Some scientists are concerned that this sector has already passed a threshold for irreversible retreat .

Why artificial submarine curtains won’t save West Antarctica’s retreating glaciers

The Amundsen Sea Embayment has been identified as the most vulnerable sector of the ice sheet because the glaciers there are resting on bedrock that lies up to two kilometers below sea level. Worse still, that bedrock slopes inland, toward the middle of the continent. This means that as the ice in this region retreats, it exposes increasingly thicker ice to the ocean, causing further melting, thinning and retreat.

We have known for a long time that glaciers resting on bedrock that deepens inland could undergo runaway retreat, ultimately leading to a near total collapse of the entire West Antarctic ice sheet . Collapse of the main outlet glaciers in this area would lead to more than a meter of sea-level rise. The loss of the West Antarctic ice sheet as a whole would raise global sea level by more than three meters—enough to affect major cities around the world catastrophically and displace hundreds of millions of people .

Lowering future sea-level rise

Using a state-of-the-art computer model to simulate the behavior of the ice, we investigated how the glaciers of the Amundsen Sea Embayment would respond to future scenarios in which we were able to block warm water from reaching the ice sheet, stabilizing or even reducing current rates of ice loss.

We explored nearly 200 different future scenarios of melting. In these experiments, we first allowed the floating ice shelves in the region to thin and retreat as they are doing now. Then, we abruptly reduced the amount of melting to see whether or not the ice could recover.

In this ensemble of experiments we explored not just different levels of cooling, but also different initial periods of melting. Together, these simulations tell us whether regrowth of the region would be possible and, if so, how quickly we would need to start reducing melt rates to allow that regrowth to happen.

Our experiments show that lowering the temperature of the ocean by blocking warm water from the embayment would, as expected, reduce the maximum amount of ice lost from the region. This in turn would reduce the contribution to sea-level rise.

However, reducing glacier melt rates only slows down the process. It doesn't stop the sea level from rising or allow the ice sheet to regrow in a way that replaces what has already been lost.

What we found was that entirely offsetting or reversing the sea-level contribution would need much more than ocean cooling. It would also require nearly two centuries of increased snowfall to build up the mass of ice that has been lost.

These findings present a gloomy image for the future of West Antarctica.

Our results suggest that even if these bold geoengineering proposals work, there will still be ongoing ice loss and global sea-level rise for decades, even centuries, to come. The rate at which this proceeds, however, will most likely depend on the emissions reductions we put in place right now.
