Accommodation

• This vessel has a delightful layout with a full beam VIP or second Owner’s stateroom on deck, a study which can double as an additional stateroom with full head aft of the VIP /Owner’s on-deck stateroom, an updated galley layout, a light bright and airy main salon and open aft deck and very safe protected water access. She has a full width Owner’s suite with his and her bathrooms as well as three additional guest staterooms all below, a full beam sky lounge and a well laid out sun deck.
• She was purposely built to be the largest yacht able to fit into the undercover storage sheds at the Fort Lauderdale Boat House and to enter shallow waters of Ocean Reef Club in the Florida Keys.

LOWER DECK:

• There are four guest staterooms on the lower deck. Forward in the guest accommodations area to port is a twin berth stateroom with en suite head with bath tub and shower.
• Opposite to starboard is a queen berth stateroom with en suite head with bathtub and shower.
• Aft to starboard is a proper sized full service laundry room.
• Opposite the laundry to port is a four berth bunk cabin, each berth is a twin and can be converted back to just twin berths. Offers en suite head with stall shower.
• Aft and full beam is the Owner’s stateroom with a large walk-in closet with his and her heads. TV drops down from the ceiling at the foot of the bed. Portside has a chest of drawers and starboard has a lounge chair and ottoman. Portside head has a bathtub, there’s a center line shower which passes through to the starboard head. Starboard head has a bidet, each head has wash basins and toilets.
• Crew quarters further forward is accessed through the galley. Features two upper and lower crew staterooms forward, each with upper and lower berths and en suite bathrooms with stall showers. Further aft to starboard is a double berth engineer’s cabin with en suite bathroom with stall shower. The crew mess is opposite to port with basic galley. Captain’s cabin is located aft of the bridge with full ensuite head.
• The engine room is further aft with large lazarette all the way aft with very safe internal staircase access up to the aft deck and centerline access out to the swim platform.
• The lazarette has a dive center with bottle storage and additional laundry service for deck towels.
• The full width VIP or on deck owner’s suite is forward with vanity and easy chair outboard to port and vanity areas to starboard. The bathroom is aft with separate stall shower and separate bathtub.
• Moving further aft is the study /children’s playroom, or children’s cabin with sleeper couch and access to the head/ day head with shower. This can also be used as a cabin. There is a direct access point from the galley if this space is to be used for additional crew or guides.
• The very large galley is a full function workspace with extra large stewardess station/pantry area. From the galley there is access to the portside deck, crew quarters forward, guest dining room and the on deck study. Large on deck windows.
• The inside dining room is open to the main salon, separated by a low buffet cabinet. This area has very large windows and open feel.
• The main aft deck is open with a circular dining table, staircase access to the bridge deck above, there is access to a passarelle starboard side of the stern and staircase access to the lazarette and swim platform on the portside.

BRIDGE DECK:

• There is a Portuguese bridge forward of the wheelhouse with wing stations on both port and starboard side. The wheelhouse has port and starboard doors out and a settee along the center aft bulkhead. The Captain’s cabin is aft of the wheelhouse to port with double berth, desk and en suite bathroom.
• A day head is located aft of the wheelhouse on the starboard side of the guest foyer. Further aft is the full beam skylounge which is a fantastic size, it offers a bar with stools to starboard, game table aft, and lounge area with couches and a desk opposite to port. Large windows complement the light woods.
• The aft bridge deck has seating ahead of the tender and toy storage area which also has the tender launching davit and stairs up to the sundeck and down to the main deck.
• The sun deck is a lovely spot with Jacuzzi tub on the centerline forward surrounded by sun pads either side, and chaise lounges under the arch. There’s a bar and BBQ area on the portside and u-shaped seating and dining aft.

Dog Cataract Surgery Cost in 2024: Typical Expense and 5 Ways to Save

B oth  dogs  and people can suffer from  vision problems , such as cataracts, especially as we age. Fortunately, your dog’s cataracts can be treated successfully with surgery. Cataracts are a clouding of the lens of the eye, causing a person or dog’s vision to seem blurry. It can make the world appear as if you are seeing things through the surface of a foggy window. For people, cataracts can affect vision and make it hard to do things like reading or driving. According to the  Mayo Clinic , as the cataracts grow, the clouding gets worse. Cataracts are usually slow to change but can worsen over time and may lead to eventual blindness.

What Are Typical Prices of Dog Cataract Surgery in 2024?

According to the financial website  MarketWatch ,  dog cataract surgery in 2024 can run between $2,700 to $4,000.  The total cost will depend on many factors, such as the severity of the cataracts, whether your dog needs surgery in one or both eyes, and medication prices. Prices also vary based on your local veterinary’s charges. Areas with a higher cost of living will have higher vet bills from the surgery.

In addition to the cataract removal, the following are some treatments  your vet  may require along with the surgery:

• Eye  ultrasound
• General anesthetic
• Artificial intraocular lens implantation

How Does Cataract Surgery Work in Dogs?

Cataract removal surgery is called phacoemulsification. The vet makes small incisions in the cornea and then uses a process that destroys the lens, allowing the vet to remove the entire lens with a vacuum. Next, an artificial lens is inserted and the vet closes the cornea with tiny sutures. Most of the time, these will be dissolvable stitches that absorb into the eye in a few weeks and do not need to be removed. 

According to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine , it’s better to perform surgery during the early stages of cataracts because as the cataracts advance, other complications can occur. However, your vet can discuss the benefits and risks for your particular dog’s situation. For example, cataract surgery may not be recommended in senior dogs when general anesthesia can be risky.

5 Ways to Save on Your Dog’s Cataract Surgery

Once you and your vet have decided cataract surgery is the best option for your dog, be sure you are given a written estimate of the total costs. As we mentioned above, cataract surgery can be expensive, up to $4,000. The price depends on a variety of factors including the severity of the cataracts and your area’s cost of living. However, there are some ways you may be able to save money on your dog’s surgery.

1. Pet Insurance

You may want to consider investing in pet insurance to help lessen the cost of surgery. However, if your dog has already been diagnosed with cataracts this may not be a viable option. Unfortunately, it will be hard (or impossible )to find a pet insurance company that covers pre-existing conditions.

2. Get a Second Opinion

Although you will need to pay for the consultation, another vet may lower prices or offer another treatment plan for your dog that isn’t as costly, while still giving your dog the best care.

3. Apply for a Grant or Financial Fund

Depending on your financial circumstances, you may be able to find a healthcare fund to help you pay for your dog’s treatment.

• RedRover publishes lists of resources for urgent care grants and other financial assistance programs . Banfield Foundation also publishes a list of resources of nonprofit organizations that help pet owners .
• You may also be able to find specific breed financial help (RedRover has a resource list for specific breeds .)
• The Humane Society has a list of resources to help owners struggling to pay vet bills as well.
• Veterinary colleges may offer financial assistance programs or grants.

4. Your Vet for Help

Don’t hesitate to ask your veterinarian for help. They may offer payment plans, financial assistance, or know of resources to help you cover your dog’s surgery bills. Your vet’s office may offer a line of credit through a provider, such as CareCredit . You may be able to find low-interest financing options that will be much less expensive than paying the high-interest rate on a credit card. Sometimes you can find deals with no interest or very low interest if you pay the bill off by a certain amount of time.

5. Prevention

Although you can’t prevent cataracts in dogs when they are hereditary or happen from old age, some causes of cataracts can be prevented. Cataracts can begin in dogs that have developed diabetes from a poor diet high in carbohydrates. Feeding your dog a good diet and giving him plenty of exercise will go a long way to keeping your pet healthy. It’s also good to get your dog’s eyes regularly checked out by your vet. An early diagnosis of cataracts can let you begin treatment right away which can help lower costs in the long term.

Two new vessels — a luxury yacht and a tall ship — hope to get noticed along St. Petersburg's waterfront

ST. PETERSBURG — Sweeping vistas of waterways edged with miles of public parkland and bustling sidewalks helped entice the owner of a charter yacht company to set course for St. Petersburg.

"St. Pete has grown so much and is so vibrant compared to 25 years ago," said Capt. Steven Siegel, who steers the 128-foot luxury yacht Sir Winston and is a graduate of Lakewood High School.

That's why he convinced his boss to make port in St. Petersburg.

"We see an opportunity to both serve the area and have a nice big yacht here," Siegel said.

So far, the benefits haven't been quite what had been hoped for. Neither the Sir Winston nor the tall ship Lynx is as visible along the city's waterfront as the vessels' owners would like.

Tucked away at the city's downtown port, the Sir Winston sits largely out of sight to the clientele the company seeks for its excursions into Tampa Bay, $100-a-head weddings and corporate events.

Last week, the four-deck, 128-foot yacht ferried dozens of the nation's mayors on a breakfast sightseeing cruise. That's just one of several events the vessel has hosted since arriving in April, but Siegel wants more.

He wants better visibility for his yacht and for him that requires a berth on prime downtown waterfront, near the site of the new Pier, the Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort, restaurants and museums.

Like the Sir Winston , the Lynx also seeks more exposure and would like to move from the Harborage Marina. The tall ship from Nantucket is a replica of an 1812 Baltimore Clipper schooner that took part in the War of 1812. Built in 2001, it's now a floating museum that offers educational programs and hosts events.

The Lynx and its supporters are asking for $65,000 in city funds so it can dock in the North Yacht Basin next to the recently launched Cross Bay Ferry. The city money, which would be used for permits, a gangway, sidewalks and fencing, would be matched by local businesses. A floating dock from Harborage Marina will be refurbished by Marinetek and a power pedestal from E&P Industries will provide power to the tall ship.

St. Petersburg City Council member Ed Montanari took the request for funds to his colleagues last week. If approved, it could also mean good news for the Sir Winston . Siegel hopes to get to share the tall ship's floating dock. For now, the yacht sails into the North Yacht Basin to pick up passengers.

A recent trial run that had it dock beside the St. Petersburg Museum of History displeased a descendant of W. L. Straub, who bought the Tampa Bay Times back when it was called the St. Petersburg Times in 1901 and pushed to preserve the city's waterfront for public use. Now North and South Straub Park are named for him.

"I was shocked to learn that the Sir Winston dinner cruise ship (a for-profit dinner cruise ship) had a 'test' dock this past week right in front of our museum …," Lucas DeVicente wrote in a letter to Mayor Rick Kriesman and the City Council.

"As you can see in the attached photos, it is essentially a wall that blocks our magnificent views of the waterfront and downtown. My great-great grandfather Straub fought to protect the waterfront and its views accessible to all, and to have a dedicated port for ships like this. It would be much better off at the Port of St. Petersburg," wrote DeVicente, who also is vice president of the museum's executive committee.

Siegel said the Sir Winston is just looking for a good port to call home.

"We were over there at the request of the city to stop at different locations to see where would be a viable location …where the vessel would fit," Siegel said. "We want nothing but to be a good partner with the city."

Besides a lack of visibility at the city's port, Siegel also said it's difficult for passengers to get on and off at that point. On Monday, Siegel had to help a Times reporter to step down into the 370-passenger yacht and climb up to disembark.

It's unclear how the Lynx , the Cross Bay Ferry — a pilot project connecting downtown St. Petersburg to downtown Tampa — and the Sir Winston will fit into the city's new Pier District plans.

"We are very excited with the interest and the activities that these vessels bring to downtown St. Pete," said Alan DeLisle, the city's development administrator.

"We have not figured it out yet. We are exploring all the options with how this will work with all the vessels. At the same time, the decision about locating the vessels will require Council approval and Army Corps of Engineers approval."

Meanwhile, the city is asking for input from residents about what they want at the municipal marina, which encompasses the North, Central and South yacht basins. A draft of a master plan is expected to be finished in early in 2017. The multimillion-dollar renovation will begin in the Central Basin — its facilities were built in 1963 and are the oldest — and will allow the marina to accommodate larger, more modern boats, said marina and port manager Walter Miller.

The goal is to begin construction in the summer of 2019, he said. The Pier District is expected to be complete by late 2018. Whether the Central Yacht Basin will be a viable place for vessels like the Lynx and the Sir Winston is not yet known. But the Sir Winston, which relocated from Fort Lauderdale, definitely wants a permanent home.

"We are exploring a lot of different ideas," DeLisle said. "We had to get the ferry in place and we did. We're working on the Lynx now."
