Here are events, where to see fireworks in Savannah, Chatham County for the Fourth of July

4th of july riverboat cruise savannah

Celebrating our independence this weekend is going to feel extra significant as we come out of a pandemic that canceled most Fourth of July events a year ago.

With so much happening in Savannah this weekend, it might be worth getting out and experiencing a few local events instead of just grilling hotdogs in your backyard.

Here are just some of the exciting and family-friendly events taking place around town.

Plant Riverside District hosts Savannah Stars and Stripes July 4th Weekend

If you are looking for one stop this weekend to get all of your July 4th celebrating in, you can’t do better than Plant Riverside where they will be offering food, music, and fun from Friday until Monday, July 5.

Plant Riverside will have music performances everyday including Lyn Avenue on Friday from 7-10 p.m., The Talisman on Saturday from 7-10 p.m., and Dueling Pianos on Sunday at 2 p.m., followed by the Fabulous Equinox Orchestra from 6-9:30 p.m.

Another highlight is “A Red, White & Blue Spectacular” circus show featuring gravity-defying performances by Savannah Cirque on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8:30 p.m. in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.

Each evening will end with a colorful “America The Beautiful” fountain show designed by William Austin Smith, and featuring music by the Savannah Children’s Choir and the Wilde School of Music.

Children will love free mini-golf from 1-5 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Montgomery Park, featuring a Savannah themed 9-hole course.

Plant Riverside will also offer a great view of Savannah’s Waterfront Annual Independence Day Fireworks Show (which is sponsored by Plant Riverside) and the Freedom Floats Boat Parade.

More: Plant Riverside District celebrates a galaxy far, far away with May the Fourth Be With You party

“We’re very excited to bring a new tradition to Savannah,” said Tyler Gray, Director of Entertainment at Plant Riverside. “I think one of the best parts about what we’re doing is creating new traditions in Savannah’s entertainment district, and something that everybody and their family can get excited about. It will be a great weekend for Savannah to celebrate right after this pandemic.”

For more information visit  plantriversidedistrict.com .

Freedom Floats Boat Parade

The Freedom Boat Club is celebrating Independence Day by decking out their boats in their finest red, white, and blue for an All-American Boat Parade. A panel of judges will vote on the Best Decoration and Ship Spirit, while prizes will also be offered for the People’s Choice.

Vote for your favorite boat at  osmosvote.com/SavannahHarbor/FreedomFloats21 . Each vote earns the captain $1 for their favorite charity, with the most votes earning an additional $250 to donate.

Boaters use promo code WATERFRONT to get 50% off registration fees.

The parade takes place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday in front of Plant Riverside and Savannah’s Waterfront.

For more information, visit  savannahswaterfront.com/event/freedom-floats-boat-parade-presented-by-freedom-boat-club/ .

Independence Day Fireworks Show

The Fourth of July is just not the same without fireworks, so this year is particularly exciting considering that the annual fireworks display on the Savannah River was canceled last year.

The Independence Day Fireworks Show is free and open to the public. The city is offering flat rate $5 parking in parking garages to encourage visitors to come downtown.

From the Archives: Fireworks celebrations in Savannah

Bring your most comfortable chair or blanket and take in the dazzling display on July 4 at 9:15 p.m at Plant Riverside and Savannah Waterfront.

For more information, visit  savannahswaterfront.com/event/independence-day-fireworks-show/ .

Fireworks on Independence Day

If you and your family are looking to make July 4th a beach day, Tybee Island will be having a spectacular fireworks display at the pier between 9:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Traffic on and off of Tybee Island is notoriously busy on this day, so be sure to get there early and plan to stay late. Although the show is staged from the pier, the fireworks will be visible all across the eastern side of the island, so it doesn’t matter where you plant your blanket and cooler.

The event is free and open to the public, and the pier is located on Strand Avenue. For more information, visit  facebook.com/discovertybee .

Fourth of July Watermelon Crawl 2021

A healthy way to kick off an all-weekend celebration is with a little exercise. Fleet Feet and Savannah Striders are hosting the annual Fourth of July Watermelon Crawl at Lake Mayer. There is no registration fee and no prizes — just a fun and casual run down through Isle of Hope and back. There is a 6-mile course and an 8-mile course to choose from.

After the run, participants are invited to partake in a juicy watermelon feast. Bibs are not included.

The group run is free and open to the public. All you have to do is show up in your most comfortable running/walking shoes. Make sure to bring your own water.

The Watermelon Crawl begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday, July 3 at Lake Mayer. For more information, view the events page online .

Independence Day Block Party at Tanger Outlets in Pooler

Let freedom and style savings ring! Tanger Outlets Savannah is saluting the nation with an Independence Day Block Party on Saturday from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.

Area shoppers and families are invited to get in on the star-spangled fun with an array of family-friendly offerings, including a fabulous sidewalk sale, special patriotic characters, and family-friendly games.

The outlet will also be hosting a holiday sale that runs through Monday. The block party is free and open to the public. Find more information at  tangeroutlet.com/savannah .

Independence Day Celebration at Fort McAllister State Historic Park

If you enjoy your Independence Day with a little history, you can celebrate the Fourth of July at Fort McAllister State Park. Fort McAllister is an earthworks fort that survived multiple attacks from Union ironclads during the Civil War. Children and history buffs will enjoy features like cannons, bomb-proof barracks, and palisades.

See what life at the fort was like in 1864 with living history demonstrations, musket firings, and old-fashioned games on Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday will also offer fishing in the Ogeechee River starting at 7 a.m. (pre-registration is required)and watermelon slices at the barracks at 12 p.m.

Entry to the park is $9 per person. Fort McAllister Park is located at 3894 Fort McAllister Road, Richmond Hill. For more information visit  gastateparks.org/FortMcAllister or call the park office at 912-727-2339.

Patriotic Concert Benefiting Homeless and At-Risk Veterans

America’s independence was won through war, so this July 4th it is worth acknowledging those that continued to fight for our freedom.

Wesley Monumental is putting on a concert of works by Scott Joplin, John Phillip Sousa, and others to support homeless and at-risk veterans. A love offering will be taken to assist CSAH Tiny Houses for Homeless Vets at the Cove at Dundee and Team Savannah 4 Veterans who give at-risk veterans hands-on assistance.

The music will be performed by the Coastal Winds Woodwind Quintet (featuring Ellie Goforth, Kristi Kiene, Sarah Spradley, Darrell Goforth and Raymond Patricio) and Monica Dekle on the Pipe Organ. Wesley Monumental is known for its beautiful concerts, so this promises to be a wonderful and uplifting performance.

The concert is at 5 p.m. July 4, and free and open to the public. Wesley Monumental UMC is located at 429 Abercorn Street.

For more information, visit  facebook.com/wesleymonumentalmusic/ .

4th of July Dinner Cruise

Savannah River Boat Cruises is offering a 2-hour cruise on the Savannah River followed by a perfect dockside vantage point to view the Savannah Waterfront fireworks display.

The cruise includes a Fourth of July inspired dinner buffet, live entertainment, and drink specials. With climate controlled lower decks and an open-air top deck, the Savannah Riverboat Cruise is one of the most luxurious ways to enjoy Fourth of July festivities.

July 4th Fireworks Cruise

One word terrible! Let's start with the line, surely to goodness you have had that many people in line before! There was absolutely no organization! Especially with the river front being so crowded for a holiday celebration you would have thought it would be planned out better. Then as we were boarding my husband asked a crew member which side of the boat was best for fireworks viewing and was told, "oh you can see them from both sides." So, we boarded the ship which was way to crowded, by the way. It is a fireworks cruise people, no one wants to sit inside, everyone wants to be outside to see them. Then we finally set sail about 9:15 we moved a little ways down the riverfront and the captain came over speaker and assured us that he would be moving the boat from side to side so each side could see the fireworks. Yeah that didn't happen! Oh the boat moved, but only for the one side to see the fireworks. We spent $70 for absolutely NOTHING! You couldn't even move to a place to see them because it was so crowded. This whole cruise was a total disappointment and a rip off. I would not recommend anyone take it! It was one of our worst July 4th experiences! I will not even get into the DJs and there pointless rambling!

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review about your experience on board our 4th of July Fireworks cruise. We are displeased to hear that your time on board was anything less than enjoyable. Please know that we take all comments very seriously and they are documented and addressed by management with efforts to continuously improve our guests’ experiences. The 4th of July is one of Savannah’s busiest holidays and we do try our best to provide all of our guests with an exclusive view of the fireworks. We sincerely apologize if you were unable to see fireworks from the side in which you were on and will be reevaluating the riverboat’s placement along the river during the following years’ fireworks show.

We went on the 4 pm cruise (no dinner). Not the most exciting cruise you will every take, but if you're interested in learning more about 4th largest port in the US, you might enjoy it.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review about your experience on board our Sightseeing Cruise. The Savannah River and her port are rich in maritime history and we do understand it may not be of interest to all. We do try our best to include historical facts and tales about the River Front and famous monuments such as the Waving Girl. We welcome suggestions from all of our guests on what they would like to see and hear and those suggestions can be sent to [email protected]. Thank you again for your time and review!

Went on the 4th of July cruise. We were expecting more. Overall staff seemed friendly. However it was crowded on finding a place to see the fireworks was at times uncomfortable. Inside the boat was clean. DJ I would say was more annoying than entertaining. We will try again when it is not a holiday.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review about your experience on board our 4th of July Fireworks cruise and for the compliment on our friendly staff and the cleanliness of the riverboat. We certainly apologize for any discomfort you may have felt during the cruise. The 4th of July is one of Savannah’s busiest holidays and we do try our best to provide an exclusive view of the fireworks show to an adequate amount of guests. We appreciate your understanding that it was indeed a holiday celebration and look forward to having you back on board for a regularly scheduled cruise. Thank you again for your time in leaving a review.

I love to travel and I love being in, on or near the water. I have taken numerous river and harbor cruises in Asia, Europe, San Fran, Seattle, Boston, you name it. Now, since I love being on the water and in the sun, I enjoyed myself. However, the tour itself was pretty lame. The boat went upriver and the view and commentary was mostly on the industrial side of Savannah. Not too exciting. I really wanted to go downriver, see nature and hear about Savannah's history. This didn't happen. My advice...if you like just chillin on a boat in a river, you may like it. If you like cruises that offer beauty and interesting information, totally avoid.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your experience on board our Sightseeing cruise. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed yourself while cruising around the Savannah River. During our Sightseeing cruise, guests learn about the history of Savannah, her port, modern day and past, and tales of “the waving girl”. With Savannah being the 4th largest shipping port in the United States, guests will learn about her industrial side and sometimes will have the chance to cruise along side one of the massive container ships traveling from all over the world. Please know your comment will not go unheard and will be brought to managements attention for future route consideration. Thank you again for your time!

We were disappointed by the riverboat cruise yesterday, and that's saying something, since we didn't have that high of expectations to begin with. The boat itself is nice enough--standard for this type of dinner cruise. My husband and I have been on dinner cruises before and thought it would be fun to take our daughters on one while we were in Savannah, but I wish we'd chosen a better first trip for them. The food was standard issue buffet food, maybe a little sub par--the options were fairly limited, not overly hot, and under seasoned. There was a green salad, some fresh fruit, and a few other side salads--I actually thought the broccoli salad was tasty. For meats, there was pork loin, beef tip, some kind of fish and a very dry chicken in some kind of artichoke sauce. The meats were all rather dry, although the beef had okay flavor, and our daughters thought the fish was quite good, surprisingly enough. The side dishes were a very tough/overcooked pasta dish, some under salted baby new potatoes and a cheesy squash casserole that we all liked. Dessert was a choice of store bought desserts-- chocolate cake (not bad), key lime pie (also not bad, but not very tart), pecan pie (okay), and a cheesecake that we didn't try. My husband took one sip of his coffee and sat it back down very quickly, leaving it alone for the rest of the evening. The worst part of the cruise for me was the view, or rather lack of it--Savannah is a working port, so nothing to see but a very industrial setting My husband felt the music might have been worse than the scenery, but I guess that's debatable!). All-in-all, it wasn't a good value for the money and I really can't recommend it.

Thank you for your time leaving a review about your experience on board our Dinner Entertainment Cruise. We appreciate all reviews and management takes them very serious! We are displeased to hear that your enjoyment of the dinner buffet was anything less than satisfying. We do try our best to offer a large variety of choices on our buffet in order to provide something for everyone, including those with special dietary needs. We welcome any suggestions from our guests as to what they would like to see more of or would like to be added. Those suggestions can me mailed to us at 9 East River Street, Savannah, GA 31401 or emailed to [email protected]. Thank you again for your time.

It was nice to be on the water and the staff is friendly (just like everyone in Savannah), but it just didn't seem to be worth the money. I know they have to buy fuel and pay staff, but it was too short. Maybe throw in a complimentary drink or something if you are unable to lengthen the tour.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your experience on board Savannah Riverboat Cruises. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed cruising on the Savannah River and that our staff was friendly. We appreciate your suggestions and take all comments very serious with none unnoticed. Thank you again for your time and review.

4th of July Guide to Savannah – Things to do on the 4th in Savannah

Holiday , Pocket Guide , Summer , Things to Do

Things to do in Savannah on the 4th of July 4

Written by Abstract Samm

This time last year, you could barely recognize River Street from the lack of tourists wandering around with Wet Willie’s Cups in tow. Never in our time here in Savannah’s Historic District did any of us consider the idea that downtown could be a ghost city (more so than what we’re used to in one of America’s most haunted cities) at 3pm on a Saturday. Right at the height of quarantine restrictions, a local or two could still be spotted riding their bikes or playing Pokemon, but Savannah truly was a “ghost town” during those months. Even St. Patrick’s Day, one of the largest celebrations in the country, fell victim to the quarantine, something that we never saw coming. But, like everyone, we did our best to stay inside, only yell at our neighbors from across the street, and stayed masked up in the moments that we had to get out and explore due to sheer cabin fever.

Now here we are, over a year later and guess what? The City of Savannah has actually approved the 4 th  of July celebrations for this year and we cannot be more excited! For some of us, locals and visitors, the fireworks held on the riverfront are a part of the planned traditions that we look forward to all year long. This year, we are not just looking forward to the fireworks, but being able to celebrate together, as a city, safely, of course. Keep on reading to see what we have got going on in Savannah for the 4 th  of July this year, along with Savannah Sip N’ Cycle #PartyBike tours, Pedicab tours and just general hype debauchery. Keep on reading to find out where to watch the fireworks this year and what other events are happening that weekend. If you know anything about holidays in Savannah, you know that we go hard any chance we get, just come around for St. Patrick’s Day if you think anything otherwise.

Things to do on the 4th of July in Savannah

Savannah Stars & Stripes @ Savannah Plant Riverside District

5.0 ★ First off, there’s SO much more than fireworks happening this year. Do you like mini golf? Well Plant Riverside (the new side of River Street) will be offering FREE mini golf all weekend from 1-5 pm.

Plant Riverside is going out of their way this year to make the holiday weekend enjoyable. From 3-5 pm, line up along the river for a Freedom Boat Parade. We love a good boat parade here, remind us to mention the Christmas lights boat parade when we get closer to December.

The four-day event at Plant Riverside District will offer free live music and performances by Savannah Cirque, mini golf, a boat parade, and food and drink options for all ages. Plant Riverside District is also a sponsor of the Savannah’s Waterfront Independence Day Fireworks Show, which will light up the sky directly across from Plant Riverside District on Sunday, July 4 at 9:15 p.m.

Free live music performances from various musicians will be happening throughout the weekend and once you have tired yourself out from all of the excitement, just look around for the signs. Thirteen different restaurants in the area will be offering deals on food and drinks, not counting the many bars that will surely be hosting some sort of coupon style drinking options.

Along with all of the festivities happening that weekend, be on the lookout for Savannah Cirque and the awesome performances they will be hosting. The best part of all that is going on? Yes, it can get EVEN BETTER. Savannah is offering 5$ flat rate parking throughout all of the parking garages. If you’ve ever gotten a parking ticket downtown, you will celebrate even more than the tourists. Side note to consider if you’re coming out to watch any of the shows happening. Blankets and chairs are encouraged for those who would like to keep their spots saved but try not to bring coolers out. With all of the deals happening for food and drink in the area, you’ll have no trouble finding beer or whatever it is you might prefer.

Already known for the recent construction being finished, the Riverside Plant District is not just a place to visit for the epic July 4 th  weekend, but is worth a trip anytime. Renditions of classic pieces, various art studios and even giant dinosaur fossils can be found without much searching. Even if the Independence Day celebration is not quite what you are on the search for while you are in Savannah, the Riverside Plant District is definitely worth a visit during any time of the year. Outside of the general downtown area, many areas right outside of the city will also be open for this weekend. From Fort McCallister to Tybee Island, everyone in this general location has been looking forward to city sanctioned events happening.

Watch the Fireworks from the Savannah Riverboat

4.4 ★ As we all know, the fireworks are displayed on the River and the most crowded location will be along River Street. But did you know that you can book a cruise on the Savannah riverboat that will allow you to see the fireworks from on the river? Nothing is more special than watching the glorious fireworks from the river! This breathtaking experience is truly a must at least once in your life! I recommend booking sooner than later because the coveted fireworks time slot sells out fast!

Book a Party Bike Tour

Drink & Ride! Did you know that the #PartyBike will be running during the 4th? Go ahead and book your tour now, spots fill up fast with the tickets starting at just 25$ per seat!

Rooftop View at Homewood Suites by Hilton Savannah

4.5 ★ If you’re staying for the weekend, you might even want to look into booking a room at Homewood Suites by Hilton Savannah/Historic Riverfront. There is a rooftop view that is a prime location for view of the river, whether there are fireworks to be enjoyed or not. A truly majestic viewpoint of the entire celebration from the rooftop perspective will make the evening a long enduring memory and potentially a new tradition!

Electric Moon Skytop Lounge

4.3 ★ When you are searching for the rooftop location straight out of your dreams, but are not quite dedicated to an entire hotel stay on the river, the Electric Moon Skytop Lounge is not just a fancy name (with equally fancy drinks to match) but also a killer view of the River, and a prime fireworks watch spot.

River Street 4th of July Celebration

Savannah River Street

5.0 ★ In general, any spot on River Street is THE spot to watch fireworks. With a show this large, and how excited we have all been to get back out there to enjoy some time together, you are not going to miss out on the antics if you are anywhere near the river when 9:15 hits. If you are dedicated to the perfect Instagram post or TikTok video, you will want to be on River Street as early as possible that day. Crowds are bound to start taking over the area quite early so a spot on the river will be worth it’s space in gold. No matter where you end up on the river, you will be able to enjoy the show.

No matter what your plans are for this weekend and any other, do not forget to take some time here on the Savannah Sip N’ Cycle blog to see what we are covering that week. From local plays to Instagram worthy photo ops and back to drinking games, there is a little bit of everything here on the blog. If it is worthy of being written about, we are on it or have already covered it. Can’t wait to see you during your visit to Savannah’s Historic District. If you are planning a trip here, or never want to leave, we’ve got you covered here at Savannah Sip N’ Cycle. If you would like to find out more about us here on the #PartyBike just click the FAQ tab or follow us on Instagram and Facebook where we love to post videos and pictures of our antics, and hopefully yours too!

Ghosts & Gravestones

Don’t be fooled by the quaint neighborhoods and cobblestone streets of Savannah. This southern city is home to eerie occurrences and infamous ghosts. Let the Hostess City of the South share its darker side with you aboard a Ghosts & Gravestones tour during the 4th of July. Your Ghost Hosts will lead you through the city’s most haunted sites, including the Andrew Low House and the Perkin’s & Son’s Ship Chandlery. Along the way, learn the menacing stories that have plagued River Street for hundreds of years. This is one history lesson unlike the others.

Restaurants and Places to Eat Open July 4th

Congress Street Up Speakeasy

This 4th of July, slip into our Speakeasy to enjoy authentic craft cocktails. Zagat rated Congress Street Up Speakeasy “One Of The Hottest Bars In Savannah.”

MRS. WILKES BOARDING HOUSE

For a true taste of Savannah, stop in at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House this 4th of July. Set in an old brick building that dates back to 1870, this is one of Savannah’s legendary spots. Mrs. Wilkes passed away in 2003 and although she had not taken in any boarders in around 40 years, her hometown cooking and hospitality continue on. The famous dining room is so popular that although the sign is not visible from the road, hungry tourists and locals alike begin lining up before the restaurant even opens every morning. Serving up family-style meals at large tables, Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House delights guests with traditional down home fried chicken, gumbo, creamed corn, Savannah red rice, biscuits and more. Come hungry and ready to dine alongside of folks you may not know; because at Mrs. Wilkes, everyone is family and is seated together at large 10-top tables.

Here are some local tips on the best places to celebrate

River Street

One of the most popular destinations in Savannah is River Street. On July 4th, celebrate Independence Day with live entertainment, games, contests and food. The fireworks show will commence at 9pm and it promises to be one of the best in Savannah. This is Trolley Stop #10.

Fort McAllister Historic Park

For a patriotic 4th of July celebration, grab the kids and head to Fort McAllister State Historic Park. This place is listed on the United States Register of Historic Places and is not only a scenic park and campgrounds, but also an authentic Civil War site. There’s a museum that features Civil War artifacts, the fort itself, cannons, bombproof barracks, the last earthwork fortification of the confederacy and more. On the 4th, pack food and drinks and plan to spend the day. The kids (and the grownups) will get a real kick out of cannon and musket firing demonstrations, sack races, egg tosses, tug-of-wars, watermelon cutting and seed spitting contests, wheelbarrow races and even Civil War style baseball.

Several of the islands, including Hilton Head and Tybee, have their own 4th of July celebrations. However, many of them can be difficult to access because of traffic. If you are staying in the Savannah Metro area, it is best to celebrate downtown and skip the holiday traffic to the islands.

Dreadful July 4th Cruise

This was advertised as a fireworks cruise and boarding was supposed to start at 8:30. We arrived at 8:10 to find the boats nearly loaded and all the seats taken. They were very crowded and there was only seating for about half the people. We wound up sitting on top of a life preserver box and counted ourselves lucky. There was a strong petroleum smell that made us feel ill and people were smoking onboard in a very packed crowd. Sure they were out on deck, but it was too close quarters for smoking. There was a DJ spinning 80's tunes and drunks on the dance floor. However, they must have arrived drunk because at $7.50 for a glass of $3.99 a bottle Chardonnay, I doubt they were drinking too heavily on the boat. We finally left the dock and motored under the bridge. Just when we got as far away from the fireworks as possible, the show began. The boat was pointed with one end facing the fireworks so no one on the side or back could see. We all had to cram onto the front of the boat. Once the fireworks were over I expected to return to the dock but no we drove back and forth on the river breathing diesel fumes and watching drunk me pole dance. Every part of this cruise was a disappointment. Sadly, I also booked a murder cruise with this company for Thursday. I hope it is better.

Thank you for your comments on the 4th of July Fireworks Cruise. We certainly value all feedback & all suggestions are taken seriously. We hope you enjoy your Thursday Murder Afloat cruise with us! If you have any concerns, we ask that you please see a boat manager or ask to see the Captain as this allows us to immediately address any issues. Thanks again for your patronage and feedback.

My mom & I attended the gullah geechee dinner cruise. It was very entertaining & the peach cobbler was incredible...people attending were rude & wandered around while the performance occurred but that just indicated that (1) they didn't want to hear civil war stories from "the slaves" perspective and clearly didn't know that was the story behind the gullah geechee history and (2) they were poorly raised...I commend the actors for their professionalism. I recommend this cruise to black church groups, black family reunion, schools teaching the youth ALL perspectives of the civil war and caucasians with an open mind to historical perspectives...if all you want is a meal on a riverboat, choose another cruise.

Thank you for your review! We are glad that you chose to cruise with us and share your experience with others. ...(the peach cobbler is one of our favorites also!) Warm Regards, River Street Riverboat Company

For a rather expensive brunch cruise, the food was mediocre, and the boat's alarm went off about 8 times during our hour and a half jaunt.. Overall wouldn't suggest the brunch trip. Have a good meal somewhere else in savannah and go on the sightseeing cruise if you like.

The riverboat cruise was a one-hour tour of the port of Savannah. Lots of info on the industrial port & cargo ships, some info on River Street history but could have been much better. If they had gone the other direction we could have seen Fort Jackson, which may have added some interest. Drinks & snacks available during this short trip. It was relaxing with my husband but was definately missing something...

The Gullah Geechee Riverboat Cruise is an okay experience. I didn't hate it, and I didn't love it. Most of the food was good--smothered pork chops, fried chicken, cabbage, salad, desserts, etc. The only disappointment with the food was the shrimp in the "shrimp and grits." The shrimp just tasted like the frozen, bagged shrimp poured into some gravy, but the grits were good. Some other items advertised on the menu never materialized. As far as the entertainment, I guess I was expecting to learn something more authentic about Gullah, Geechee culture. Instead, it was like a trip down memory lane of old negro spirituals with some modern day praise dancers thrown in, which I really did not care for. I never quite understood the drummer's story either.

We took the 2 hour dinner tour for our 20th Wedding Anniversary. I upgraded to the Anniversary Package and window seats so in total I paid about $165. We had a great time. Our waitress was great. The food was only so-so but I kind of expected that (buffets are rarely top food). The scenery isn't all green riverbanks but you get to see the real port (we saw several large barges leaving port). We thought it was neat to see it all. Whether you will enjoy this or not completely depends on what you want from the trip. Oddly enough (from reading other reviews) the Riverboat cruise was the favorite party of my stay in Savannah!

Deb- Thanks so much for your very kind review - Glad you enjoyed your cruise! Congratulations on your 20th Anniversary!! Let us know when you return for your anniversary and we'll give you a complimentary upgrade. See you next year.
