Boat of the Week: This Wellness-Focused 164-foot Superyacht Has an Indoor Plunge Pool With Its Own Waterfall
Aegir, named after the viking god of the sea, has a one-of-a-kind flybridge and beach club. this concept translates into an innovative cruising lifestyle., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Sometimes all it takes is a set of fresh eyes. Designer Chris Lane penned a superyacht concept as the final project for his college degree several years ago. The 164-footer, which Lane called Aegir, is both fresh and buildable.

“I wanted to create a disruptive charter concept that wasn’t just based on cruising the Mediterranean but leans into wellness—as if the boat is a floating retreat,” Lane told Robb Report .
By drawing on the Danish hygge philosophy, which roughly translates to creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, Lane carved out relaxing nooks across the yacht where guests can be together. On the main forward deck is a large fire pit surrounded by a curved sofa facing out to sea. A second fire pit runs the length of the outdoors dining table at the rear of the deck, providing a theatrical talking point during evening meals—or a good-old fashioned Viking marshmallow roast.
The boxy glass superstructure provides views on all sides of the yacht, taking inspiration from Dutch architect Paul de Ruiter’s minimalist land-based projects. The use of mirrored glass helps the yacht blend into its surroundings. An open-plan observation lounge sits on the upper level, with a sundeck bar atop.
A living wall runs the entire length of the yacht’s “central core,” from the sundeck to the lower deck. “My intention was to give each area a beach vibe, so guests feel connected, even when seated in completely different ends of the structure,” says Lane. “The living wall is a visual link that ties all the levels together and connects the guests with nature, even when indoors.”
Arguably, the coolest feature is the nook in the bow of the yacht, just forward of the full-beam master suite. There are no windows other than a large skylight, forcing guests to look up into the night sky. “It struck me as a space that’s often wasted but would make the most incredible place to watch the aurora borealis,” says Lane.
In keeping with the boat’s Scandinavian theme, the beach club has a sauna, steam room and fully equipped gym. A marble-fronted plunge pool on the aft deck is backed by a cascading waterfall that spans both levels. “The sound of flowing water is to help guests relax and unwind,” says Lane. There is also a 13-foot-long pool, complete with a mirrored ceiling, sectioned off from the adjacent gym by a sliding glass door.
The designer deviated from the usual approach with the beach club: The area is located inside the vessel behind the swim platform, which remains as its own private space connected to the cockpit by flowing stairs.
The beach club, however, is accessed via an interior floating staircase. Any inconvenience that has caused was mitigated with drop-down side terraces that not only add to the hygge lifestyle to the design, but also elements of privacy. “Not many yachts this size dedicate so much interior space to the beach club, but I felt it was an important element of the wellness theme to make it feel tranquil,” says Lane.
The beach club’s larger footprint is also made possible by the yacht’s compact diesel-electric propulsion system and generators, located farther forward than typical engine configurations.
Like the Wider, Aegir’s propulsion system also includes an azimuth pod-drive system, a lithium polymer battery bank and bow thrusters, with power coming from four Rolls Royce Marine Gen Set engines. Lane also designed storage for sailing dinghies and sea kayaks, rather than a garage for jet skis or other gas-guzzling toys.
Of course, if you really want to combine sustainability and blend into the environment, Lane recommends a polar plunge in the chilly Norwegian waters.

'Lowest Possible Footprint': Meet 80m Superyacht Aegir 2.0
By Jenna Mehdi
Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) has officially unveiled its latest superyacht concept. Designed to enhance the platform of its predecessor Aegir, 80m Aegir 2.0 is a wind-powered trimaran which claims to have ‘the lowest possible environmental footprint’ of any yacht ever built.
Combining world-class design with advanced technology, TDoS opted for a trimaran hull to prevent heeling and provide a stable platform with increased deck space. With a wide beam of 18.5m, this allows for much more room for design maneuver than with traditional sailing yachts.
TDoS Partner and Yacht Director Daniel Nerhagen said of Aegir 2.0 that the project was conceived to offer ‘unparalleled luxury with the lowest possible environmental footprint’ . This was no understatement.
Speaking with Superyachts.com about the design inspiration behind Aegir 2.0, Daniel Nerhagen said: ' We have been sailing for a couple of thousand years, but we only used fossil fuels the past hundred years. It was now time to go back in history and revisit proven concepts but with the improved technology of today.'
With an infinity pool in the aft and Jacuzzi in the fore, Aegir 2.0’s pool deck becomes a platform for entertainment and socialising. In keeping with the latest trends, the yacht offers a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, panoramic glass walls and an open-air viewing platform with bar on the sky deck. She is also equipped with a gym and spa, two tender garages and accommodation for 12 guests and 16 crew.
Aegir 2.0 has been designed to push the boundaries of space and volume optimisation. Her distinctive exterior is characterised by a black ‘wing’ connecting the generous open deck space with the trimaran pontoons. Her Swedish roots shine through in Scandinavian-style clean lines allowing for a streamlined and eye-catching profile.
The megayacht has been designed to accommodate a DynaRig, the iconic rig system first designed in the 60s and brought to some of the world’s greenest sailing yachts by Dykstra Naval Architects. Combining cutting-edge hydronics with a hybrid wind-electric propulsion system that recharges the batteries under sail, Aegir 2.0 promises a virtually infinite range with zero fuel consumption.
Her interior design matches form with function; a continuation of the yacht’s Scandi-chic minimalist style. Subtle colour tones have been paired with light, organic materials to give a feel of interior elegance, enhanced by light and spacious rooms. Aegir 2.0's signature style 'focuses on simple lines with attention to the small details and true workmanship' to create a true at-home feel onboard.
Aegir 2.0 is the ideal home-at-sea for the modern yacht Owner looking to push the boundaries in green innovation, without compromising on luxury or expert design.
"Aegir 2.0 is designed to offer unparalleled luxury with the lowest possible environmental footprint. TDoS Partner and yacht director Daniel Nerhagen. " Daneil Nerhagen, TDoS Partner and Yacht Director

Aegir 2.0: the yacht with the lowest environmental footprint
The Aegir 2.0 is an upgrade of the Aegir that launched in 2019. This luxurious sailing yacht uses green technology, making it the cleanest superyacht in the world.
This glamourous trimaran has a hull that prevents heeling , contains a stable platform and has a much more spacious deck space in comparison to traditional sailing yachts. It combines hybrid wind-electric propulsion with hydronics so it recharges its batteries when the yacht is moving. Besides its environmentally friendly aspect, guests will be able to enjoy its infinity pool and Jacuzzi in the fore and a grand panoramic glass wall that surrounds the lounge and dining area , offering unobstructed sea view.
“Aegir 2.0 is designed to offer unparalleled luxury with the lowest possible environmental footprint ,” Daniel Nerhagen, TDoS Partner and yacht director, said during an interview.
The environmental footprint measures how fast we consume resources or generate waste in comparison with how fast nature absorbs our waste. Having a low environmental footprint means having a low carbon footprint or being sustainable with the environment. Sailing yachts are already quite environmentally friendly as they use windpower to move. However, superyachts use electric power for their pools, rooms and other amenities, meaning they not always are very sustainable. As many industries rush to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is exciting to see this healthy trend reaching motor yachts and in general the world of sailing.
The yacht has been built with a beautiful style that provides a unique outdoor experience. The interior combines functionality and attention to detail keeping in mind Scandinavian minimalism. With spacious rooms and generous light openings , the Aegir 2.0 delights guests that enjoy living at the sea as well.

TDoS Unveil Ultra Eco-Friendly Yacht: Aegir 2.0
Thanks to a hybrid propulsion system and cutting edge hydronics, Aegir 2.0 is hailed as the cleanest superyacht in existence.
By Kim Ayling
Renowned ship design company Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) recently unveiled its newest project, Aegir 2.0, an ultra-luxurious 265.2-ft sailing yacht with impressive environmental credentials ingrained into her design.
Thanks to her reliance on a combination of hybrid wind-electric propulsion and cutting-edge hydronics, Aegir 2.0 is being hailed as the cleanest superyacht in existence. However, Aegir 2.0 ’s green credentials in no way compromise her performance, with the hybrid propulsion system recharging the batteries while the ship is under sail, resulting in a virtually unlimited range without any fuel consumption.
“ Aegir 2.0 is designed to offer unparalleled luxury with the lowest possible environmental footprint,” says TDoS partner and yacht director Daniel Nerhagen.

The latest reveal from TDoS is an updated version of its earlier vessel, Aegir, which was first released in 2019. A trimaran hull was chosen for the redesign to prevent heeling and accommodate a more spacious deck than is standard on a sailing yacht. Aegir 2.0 ’s generous 61-ft deck space allows for an infinity pool at her stern and a jacuzzi at her fore, with a pool deck offering a primary recreation area for guests.
A seamless indoor-outdoor experience is captured throughout the ship, with the floor-to-ceiling windows encasing the main dining lounge area offering uninterrupted views across the ocean. This attention to detail continues to the upper sky deck area, featuring an open-air viewing platform and bar area. Aegir 2.0 also features fitness facilities, a spa area and ultra-spacious and stylish accommodations for up to 12 guests.

Organic materials and natural light compliment Aegir 2.0’s subtle interior color palette / ©TDoS
In true Scandinavian style, Aegir 2.0 ’s design marries minimalism with complete functionality. Organic materials and natural light compliment her subtle interior color palette and enhance the ship’s elegance, while her exterior is characterized by the striking black wing connecting the deck to the outer pontoons and the sleek, clean lines of her hull.
As featured on the classic sailing yachts of the 1960s, TDoS designed Aegir 2.0 to include an iconic DynaRig. Estimated to be twice as efficient as a standard rig – even on larger yachts such as Aegir 2.0 – the DynaRig is a welcome addition to this super-eco vessel.

About Aegir Expeditions
Each crew member will gain offshore passage making skills and experience by being actively involved in every aspect of operating and maintaining a modern ocean-cruising boat including mastering seamanship, navigation, heavy weather tactics, steering and standing watches, sail trim and reefing, anchoring, provisioning, meal preparation, and ongoing maintenance of the vessel.
While the underlying concept is to build your skills and self-confidence, it is also about the cruising lifestyle and blending the sailing with the richer experience of making landfalls and exploring different locations. While we teach offshore sailing skills, we also make passages, voyages.
Aegir and Ran
Together they dwell in a magnificent hall beneath the ocean and can be seen as the animating powers of the ocean and its varying qualities. Together they have nine daughters, who are usually interpreted as being spirits of the waves.
While the relationship between the gods and the giants is ambivalent at best, Ægir and Ran enjoy an overwhelmingly friendly relationship with the gods. Often portrayed as a gracious host, he invites the Norse gods to a great feast each year in his hall, Brime, where the beer and the food are magically transported to the guests and the drinking-horns fill themselves.
According to Odin, Ægir brews the best ale. He has the world’s biggest brewing kettle, a mile deep, which Tor stole from the giant Hyme and gave to him. In Ægir’s hall, the gods were never allowed to fight, and anyone making trouble was banished for all eternity.
Expedition def: a journey or voyage undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose, especially that of exploring a distant place.
