Worst experience ever

We bought a boat with them in spain. We have pictures of the boat when We bought it. But after the transport to our harbour in the netherlands We were shocked . The lock on the door was forced and broken they tied it up with a rope. One of the engines won 't Come down the interior and wood on the floor was damaged and there were leaves and mudd on the floor. There were problems with the batteries . And when the boat has arrived on the truck everything was filmed by a camera on the harbour . When i confronted ancasta they only said that the chauffeur has also seen the damage ....so they admit that there was something wrong but i never heard from them and now the coast from more than 30 000 euro's are all for us I think for selling your boat they are reliabel but do not buy a boat there .

I have just sold a yacht through…

I have just sold a yacht through Ancasta Dartmouth.30/11/2023 Before deciding to market the yacht, they advised on the process, paperwork required, tax implications ref Vat, potential values of the boat. Based on this we decided to sell the boat at the end of the season. They produced a comprehensive sales brochure which was circulated within the group. We recieved an offer two weeks later and completed four weeks after that. All this was overseen by Nick Bishop of their Dartmouth Office, a definite 5 star service--impressive!!

Insulted! Poor service

We've just been to Southampton Boat Show today, looking around and spotted the Ancasta Lagoon 46 & 51. Me & my family joined the queue which started building up behind us. After 20 minutes waiting, a female staff (long, blond, curly hair) told all of us that the viewing is for LEASE OR PURCHASE CUSTOMERS ONLY at the time (12noon) & told us to come back by 4 or 5pm when it's nearly closing time. We felt insulted & absolutely unhappy. We were serious and interested customers but with the service like that, they're lost few sales there. Would be better if they brief the staff properly. Boat show charges entry tickets which should allow ALL spectators to see & view every single boat and should be first come, first serve! SHOULDN'T BE...LOOKING SMART, WALLET FAT, first serve!

Poor service - I only want to buy a boat you're advertising!

Been trying to arrange a viewing on a boat in Poole for 3 weeks!!! Not sure what the gig is but literally no one from Ancasta is available to show me the boat! Today I was advised that I can view this Sunday afternoon (11/09) or not until after the Southampton Boat show, that's another two weeks. How hard are you actually working to earn your commission Ancasta? I cannot imagine the owners will be very impressed with your lack of effort!

Excellent Ancasta Lymington Experience….

Recently sold my motor yacht using the team at Lymington Ancasta Brokerage. I’ve had an excellent experience from start to finish. Given the distance I live from Lymington, the team (James, Charles & Tracey), took great care to help with the presentation of the boat for photography and viewings. Ancasta facilitated a smooth selling process with great communication throughout and helped co-ordinate with Ropewalk (Volvo dealer) a few repairs which the survey highlighted needed doing. Delighted with service and would highly recommend the team at Lymington.

Over and Above....

I have recently completed the sale of my catamaran through Ancasta at Port Hamble and would like to say how pleased I have been with the Professionalism and service that Both Tim and Charles have shown in brokering the deal. The deal started and completed during the Coronavirus Lockdown and has been difficult due to the purchaser living in France. Ancasta went well beyond the norm to keep it all going with live video views and getting a survey done and even managed to find a French delivery crew to get the boat over to France from the Uk to complete the sale.

Three stars is generous

Would have given them one star but helped when we had a problem with a dodgy engineer trying to milk us with work that didn't need doing and work paid for but not done. As for Ancaster (Lymington), as soon as we put our boat up for sale and signed the documents they said "you'll never sell it for that. Misspelt name of boat. Used stock photograph instead of the real boat, told us we should include out boat in the Southampton boat show, we agreed and that should contact us when the entry was due. They contacted us to say all the berths were sold out and we could dislay the boat on stilts, a 20 minute drive away from the show. Desciption of boat they wrote was not inviting. Kept telling us the engines hours were too high. They were, we knew this, but that's all they concentrated on the entire time it was for sale. Took six months to sell, to the first person that took it for a trial. Owner has bad attitude. Also tried to overcharge us on commission. 8% insteat of 7%. Prove it they said. We sent proof and they reduced the invoice.

Decent to deal with, remember they work for the vendor

Was looking to buy a yacht, and Ancasta Lymington had one that on sight fit the bill--right length, style and budget. I've owned yachts but am no expert, so took someone more experienced with me for one of my viewings. Given they must get a fair few 'keel-kickers,' and I was lowish end of the market, it wasn't red carpet service, but Ancasta was fine arranging viewings etc. Had a good few question marks after viewings, and made an offer subject to survey and engineer's inspection. This was accepted and I paid a 10% deposit, which they said they needed prior to survey. Not sure I see why exactly, but OK. The survey confirmed my doubts and added a few more, so I decided to pull out. Ancasta, reasonably, asked why, so I sent a brief outline email. According to the letter of the contract, I think they could've demanded to see the surveyor's report with my rejection, but didn't. They then returned my deposit very promptly, and asked politely if I could cut and paste the relevant sections of the survey to assist the vendor, who was aware of some of the problems. NB, the yacht wasn't a basket case, but did need fairly extensive and labour-intensive work, which was beyond my capabilities and budget. I decided to send them the full survey report as a courtesy. So I was able to get out of the deal and continue my search with minimal delay, only incurring the cost of the survey, which was money well spent. I would use Ancasta again.

Stay away from this company.

Stay away from this company. Boat purchases are for pleasure and enjoyment, and if you want to experience this do not purchase from Ancasta. Very pleasant on day and nice guys, but should be really when boat value is 2 million. I paid £10,000 to hold price on show day. The sales guys got dates wrong from when I said I’d be ready for 1st deposit payment, to be told ‘don’t worry we are very flexible company and like to become friends with our clients’ . 8 weeks before 1st deposit was due I started receiving, text messages, phone calls, voicemails, emails, I’m surprised a carrier pigeon didn’t turn up with a message… nearly 20 different communications between the date it started and date actual deposit was due. They had made mine and my families amazing purchase feel like a debt looming over us, that it wasn’t a treat or a pleasure purchase, but a debt I had built up and was being chased for before it was due. After speaking to other friends who also had experience buying boats, other brokers I know… one being the guy who sent me to Ancasta, I made the difficult decision to cancel order and now look elsewhere for a boat. When emailing my cancellation and reasons, I again got emails, phone calls and voicemails I have saved, trying to save the deal and apologising. They even made calls to my broker who recommended them to offer a Williams tender as apology. I told them it wasn’t about money, it was the principal that mine and my families experience buying this boat had been ruined on this occasion and that I was taking the business elsewhere. So I asked for the £10,000 back as loss of sale was a result of poor service and bad experience. This then resulted in a less pleasant email reminding me I had signed a contract and that they will seek legal action. I had responded that I’m happy to go legal as I have a lot of proof in text messages and saved voicemails apologising, this accepting blame for poor experience. Still I don’t have my £10,000 which makes me feel they needed the sale and money more than correcting the mistake. This matter is unresolved still and will continue….

Leaving the European convention on human rights won’t stop the boats – but it will create other problems for the UK

Faced with legal and practical challenges to getting planes off the ground to Rwanda, Rishi Sunak has threatened to leave the European convention on human rights (ECHR) . The prime minister argues the convention, which is part of UK law through the Human Rights Act, is preventing him from “stopping the boats” and curbing illegal migration into the UK.

Sunak has vowed not to let a “foreign” court (the European Court of Human Rights) block the policy to send irregular migrants to Rwanda. The court intervened in June 2022 to stop a flight to from taking off.

But withdrawing from the ECHR would not, legally or in practice, give the government the power to “stop the boats”. It would, however, create a number of other headaches for the UK and its international reputation.

The key legal problem hindering the Rwanda plan is a December 2023 ruling from the the UK Supreme Court, which found that the policy was unlawful and that Rwanda was not a “safe” country for asylum seekers. This was because of the risk that people removed to Rwanda could be at risk of “refoulement” – being sent on to countries where they would face irreparable harm.

The ECHR protects against the risk of refoulement, but does not prevent the lawful deportation of a person who has claimed asylum, nor does it stop a country sending them to a safe third country. What this means is that if Rwanda is a safe country, on the evidence, then the policy of sending asylum seekers to Rwanda to be processed and settled would not necessarily violate the ECHR.

Parliament is currently debating legislation designating Rwanda as a “safe” country for asylum seekers, regardless of evidence to the contrary. If the bill becomes law, which could happen as early as this week , it will almost certainly be challenged before the European Court of Human Rights. (The court is responsible for enforcing the convention). Further orders to stop flights will be issued if there is still a risk of refoulement.

But, as the Supreme Court pointed out, non-refoulement is protected in many other international conventions and treaties that the UK has signed up to. This includes the UN refugee convention , and the UN international covenant on civil and political rights . It’s also protected in domestic UK law. Leaving the ECHR, therefore, would not free the UK of the obligation not to send people to a place of harm.

Beyond the legal obligations, there’s also an issue of policy. As a deterrent to illegal migration, the Rwanda policy is unproven at best. The Home Office couldn’t find evidence that domestic policies influence people’s decision of where to seek asylum.

Research indicates that people are more likely to choose based on social networks, shared languages and diaspora communities. Due to organised crime and human trafficking, many also do not choose their destination at all.

Flights to Rwanda would also not solve the current backlog of over 130,000 people awaiting an asylum decision. More people arrived via small boat to the UK in January 2024 than the estimated 1,000 people Rwanda could process over the course of the initial five years planned for the policy.

Other consequences

Sunak is not the first Conservative leader to call for a break with the convention. David Cameron called for UK withdrawal in 2012 over the court’s decision that a blanket ban on prisoners voting violated their rights. Theresa May made a similar call in 2016 over blocks to the deportation of radical cleric Abu Qatada to Jordan to face trial for terrorism offences.

But leaving the ECHR would have other consequences for people in the UK, and for the UK internationally.

Withdrawing would leave the UK without a codified and legally binding human rights document. Human rights protections in the UK have been driven by the ECHR since it was “brought home” in the Human Rights Act in 1998. For example, following judgments concerning the convention’s right to privacy, homosexuality was decriminalised in Northern Ireland, phone-hacking was made illegal, and employers can no longer read employees’ emails without consent.

The Human Rights Act gives effect to ECHR rights in UK law. It creates a legal obligation for all public bodies (including police, hospitals, care homes and local councils) to abide by ECHR rights. The law also requires the courts to interpret law in so far as they can in compliance with the convention.

Leaving the ECHR would make the Human Rights Act meaningless, like a car without an engine. In practice, to leave the ECHR the government would have to repeal the HRA (and other legislation for the devolved administrations).

Side view of Rishi Sunak walking off a stage holding a red folder, there is a screen beside him listing the government's five priorities, with 'stop the boats' highlighted

It would also have international consequences. The Good Friday agreement that largely ended the Troubles in Northern Ireland requires the ECHR to be part of the law there. There is no way for the UK to leave the ECHR without violating the agreement, causing issues for the peace settlement in Northern Ireland, as well as the UK’s relationship with Ireland, the US and the EU.

Relations with the EU would also be strained. The UK-EU trade and cooperation agreement , which governs the post-Brexit relationship, commits explicitly to the ECHR when it comes to human rights protection, particularly regarding security and judicial cooperation. The EU stated that if the UK withdraws, it would terminate this part of the agreement, effectively stopping, for example, extradition of criminal suspects to face trial in the UK.

Beyond this, the UK currently has one of the strongest records of compliance with the ECHR before the European Court of Human Rights. Withdrawal would set a precedent for other countries with far worse records, and weaken the UK’s reputation for holding itself and others to account.

Nearly 750 small boat arrivals recorded at weekend ahead of Rwanda bill votes

Rishi Sunak braced for fresh round of wrangling over plan that is due to cost taxpayers £1.8m per deportee

The number of people travelling by small boat to seek asylum in the UK hit a new daily high for 2024 at the weekend, figures show, as Rishi Sunak braces for a fresh round of parliamentary wrangling over the Rwanda deportation bill.

Unions and charities are preparing to mount legal challenges if the bill, which is meant to “stop the boats”, passes into law this week.

Official Home Office data shows 534 people were detected making the Channel crossing by small boat on Sunday, after 214 travelled on Saturday. It means about 6,000 people have made the journey so far this year, with more than 75,000 arrivals recorded two years on from the Rwanda deal being signed.

The deal will cost UK taxpayers about £1.8m for each asylum seeker, according to Whitehall’s official auditor, although no one has so far been deported.

The safety of Rwanda (asylum and immigration) bill will be back in the Commons on Monday as the government seeks to overturn changes made in the Lords. It is expected to be sent back to the Lords on Tuesday and could then be returned to the Commons again.

Ministers will seek to strip out changes made by peers who want extra legal safeguards, including a provision to ensure “due regard” for domestic and international law.

Victoria Atkins, the health secretary, suggested on Sunday the Home Office would be “ready to go” in implementing the plan once the bill entered the statute books.

The legislation seeks to revive the government’s plan to send some asylum seekers on one-way flights to Kigali. The scheme has faced a series of setbacks since it was announced two years ago by the then prime minister, Boris Johnson. It declares the east African country safe after the policy was grounded by the supreme court ruling it unlawful .

Government insiders remain confident the bill will pass by the end of this week after another round of parliamentary ping pong between the Commons and Lords.

Labour has indicated it will not block the bill, with local elections looming and the government hoping for a confrontation over the scheme. However, a group of Labour and crossbench peers are expected to send the bill back to the Commons again.

The Labour peer Shami Chakrabarti told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme her amendment “restores the jurisdiction of domestic courts who are defenestrated by this bill” and detailed other amendments including exemptions for victims of modern slavery and human trafficking and for people who “put themselves in harm’s way overseas serving the British crown”.

after newsletter promotion

The charity Care4Calais, which helped block flights to Rwanda last year, said it had recruited volunteers to identify people who were due to be removed to the east-central African country. It intends to offer legal support to asylum seekers to try to keep them in the UK.

Meanwhile, the Times reported on Monday that Britain had also approached countries including Costa Rica, Armenia, Ivory Coast and Botswana in an effort to replicate the scheme. Sources said the claims were accurate but referred to talks that took place last year.

Sunak gave the Home Office and Foreign Office a deadline of last autumn to secure two additional deals, according to the paper.

A government spokesperson said Britain was “continuing to work with a range of international partners to tackle global illegal migration challenges”. They said: “Our focus right now is passing the safety of Rwanda bill, which builds on the Illegal Migration Act, and putting plans in place to get flights off the ground as soon as possible.”
